The vintage 2016 has set the bar high in the Southern Rhone, not unlike 2010. It was however the 2009 vintage that provided me an introduction to Domaine La Colliere. In those days the importer was my buddy Eric Solomon who first brought the property to America. Eric's pal Philipe Cambie the wine consultant. The 2009 was off the charts and I'm hopeful you may still have a few bottles tucked away in your cellar.

If you like polished wines this may not be for you. Thinking of La Fontaine, words that come to mind are savage, animal, garrigue. This is not for the fined and filtered set. This is real-deal Rhone – pocket-knife and fork authentic – Rasteau – as it was meant to be, and has been for centuries. Located just north of Gigondas and east of Cairanne, the endearing Rhone surround Rasteau.

The flagship cuvée is the 2016 Rasteau La Fontaine, which is 85% old vine Grenache with 10% Mourvèdre and 5% Syrah, destemmed and brought up in tank. Deep ruby/purple-colored with a smoking nose of blackcurrants, toasted spices, cured meats, and graphite, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a rounded, sexy texture, great acidity, and a huge finish. It's a classic, grand, balanced Rasteau.
