With its stunning high slopes and deep valleys along the river’s edge earning it the title of ‘the Tuscany of the Gironde,’ savvy Bordeaux fans know Fronsac is undergoing a renaissance, an up-and-coming region neighboring St. Emilion where careful choices can yield exceptional value. “A tasty Fronsac” with “lovely depth and structure” according to Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, the sleek and elegantly styled 92 pt. 2019 Chateau Carlmagnus Fronsac Terra Luna boasts fresh spiced dark fruit with earthy harmonious tannins and well-defined structure, scoring 90 plus point ratings from a range of critics and offered at bargain pricing.

Combining his passion for winemaking and art, third generation Arnaud Roux-Oulie took over his family’s estate at the age of 20, his unique colorful paintings exhibited throughout the magnificent Chateau and featured on labels designed to commemorate special occasions.  Located west of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol north of the Dordogne River, Fronsac exhibits a “more consistent limestone terroir than neighboring St-Emilion” according to Bordeaux expert Jane Anson, with a mix of clay soils that favor Merlot. Spanning 20 hectares, the vines for the Carlmagnus average 35 years of age, planted in a region known as “the historical cradle of great Bordeaux” with wine-growing dating back to the ancient Romans. A blend of mostly Merlot with 10% Cabernet Franc contributing fresh spicy aromas and tannic structure, the opulent 2019 Carlmagnus Fronsac was aged in 50% new French oak for 18 months under the direction of renowned enologist Herbert Du Bouard of Chateau Angelus, yielding racy, energetic fruit layered with integrated oak and boasting a silky, elegant finish from a “particularly successful” Fronsac vintage according to Jane Anson.

Featuring a fanciful label honoring the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing that mirrors the estate’s skyward trajectory in quality, the powerful 92 pt. 2019 Carlmagnus is a “seamless Fronsac with lots to like” according to Jeb Dunnuck, “drinking nicely today… with upwards of a decade of prime drinking,” poised to overdeliver way above its price point for years to come.

The 2019 Carlmagnus has a perfumed nose of ample black fruit, spicebox and light cedar aromas; the oak here is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied and quite fleshy, with supple tannins and plush red cherries and wild strawberry mixed with desiccated orange peel toward the finish. This has matured nicely in barrel.

92 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Dark cherries, mulberries, licorice, olives and mushrooms on the nose. Medium-to full-bodied with fine tannins. Soft and fruity with a supple finish. Drink in 2022.

90 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)
