Known for his larger-than-life personality and flamboyant velvet jacket attire, Burgundy-born Jean-Charles Boisset is a true believer that great wines are made in the vineyard, his first priority after purchasing Raymond Vineyards in 2009 to upgrade the existing 90-acre property and implement organic and biodynamic viticulture. Established in Napa Valley over 50 years by long-time Beringer winemaker Roy Raymond, Raymond Vineyards now spans over 300 acres in Rutherford and St. Helena, the vineyards and winemaking managed under the direction of 100 pt. consulting winemaker Phillipe Melka since 2009. In addition to gaining organic and biodynamic certification for the vineyards and building one of Napa's largest solar panel projects to generate electricity for the winery, Boisset hired former Far Niente winemaker Stephanie Putnam to work alongside Melka to refine the blends, consistently garnering 90 plus point ratings throughout her tenure. Grown in cooler vineyards in south Napa and Carneros, the elegant 92 pt. 2021 Raymond Chardonnay Reserve Selection comes from “a classic vintage in the making” according to James Suckling, barrel fermented in 18% new French oak without malolactic fermentation and sur lie aged for 10 months before being bottled and yielding aromatic fresh fruit hinting of toasty spice with vibrant acidity.
