Much like Francesco Redi, 17th century Italian poet who called Vino Nobile "the king of all wines," I have a great fondness for the Prugnolo gentile-based wines from this DOCG classified zone 50 miles southeast of Florence. Family patriarch Alibrando Dei spent the first decade establishing the vineyards, adding additional parcels, and restoring the property's 1930s villa. In 1985, Alibrando and the family began estate bottling their wines and by 1991 his granddaughter, Caterina joined the family business. Her passion for the great wines of Vino Nobile and the decision to enlist the services of Italy's most important oenologist, Paolo Caciorgna (Altesino, Nicodemi) has resulted in wines which, in the words of Galloni, "scream with personality and character." You will adore Dei's Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, reference point for zone and style; elegant and pure, compelling and generous.

Fragrant blue flower, crushed aromatic herb and wild berry aromas form the nose on this smooth, full-bodied red. A blend of 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo Nero, it's savory and loaded with finesse, delivering juicy black cherry, ripe blackberry, truffle and cocoa before a star anise finish. Supple tannins and bright acidity provide seamless support and balance. Drink 2021–2031.

Elegance, purity, the expression of the grape is beautiful. I haven't tasted a VNM this pure is a decade. No, not big, not oaked, not to be missed.
