Located in the commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga, the southernmost appellation of Chianti Classico, Castello di Bossi's microclimate differs greatly from the northern sectors of Chianti Classico. Further north in the Classico zone, the Arno River tempers the climate, reducing temperatures, making for cooler growing cycles. Castelnuovo Berardenga is warmer, producing riper wines with structure and bold flavor profiles. The subsoils in these southern reaches of Castelnuovo Berardenga play a big part in this richness, too. The compact, rolled-stone, alberese soils of the south challenge the vines, especially in Castello di Bossi's Berardo Vineyard, where calcareous clay also plays a role. This southern facing vineyard sits at 1,200 feet in elevation, producing 1.5 tons of fruit per acre – lower than many of the famous cult Cabs and Classified Bordeaux on the market. |
