Champagne Charlie is a friend of mine. Legendary character, I imagine I may have even enjoyed the company of the man himself. Born in 1822, Charlie was the son of Charles-Henri Heidsieck, who was himself the nephew of Florens-Louis Heidsieck, co-founder of Piper Heidsieck. The tales of heroics run throughout Charlie's family. His father went down in history for his antics in 1811, storming into Moscow ahead of Napoleon on his galloping white stallion, cases of Champagne at the ready to celebrate. It didn't matter the victor to Charles-Henri, he was there to celebrate and sell some wine! Charlie had that same salesmanship in his gut. He popularized real Champagne in America for the first time after forming his eponymous firm in 1851. After his first visit to New York, he hired an agent to handle the business of importing his firm's Champagnes. Five years later, thousands of cases successfully sold, Charlie returned. New York lit up; banquets, balls and parties galore celebrating the man they affectionately named "Champagne Charlie."

The success of 2008 in Champagne is no longer a secret with the release of both the 2008 Cristal (97+WA) and 2008 Dom Perignon (96+WA). Just now being released, 2008 Charles Heidsieck was disgorged just last year and is now setting sail. A great Charlie. Lovers of the Brut Reserve, and many of you are, should not miss this release!

Disgorged in February 2019 with eight grams per liter dosage, the 2008 Brut Millésimé unfurls in the glass with beautiful aromas of citrus oil, crisp green apple, linden, fresh walnuts and warm bread. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, taut and incisive, with a deep and layered core that integrates its racy spine of acidity, excellent concentration and a long, delicately nutty finish. Impeccably balanced, this is Heidsieck's finest vintage bottling since the 1980s.

Well-cut and refreshing, this is lacy in texture and finely knit, with rich hints of toasted brioche and candied orange peel accenting the black cherry, salted almond and chalk notes that linger on the finish. Disgorged 2019. Drink now through 2026. 3,000 cases made, 100 cases imported.
