Readers of these pages are keenly aware of my decades-long relationship with Bodegas Lopez de Heredia. My most recent trip to Haro, in the northwest of La Rioja was mesmerizing; unforgettable ancient buildings adjacent to a stunning display of modern architecture designed by Zaha Hadid; a pavilion standing as a philosophy of integration that must be witnessed to be believed. And in my inbox: an offer from my friends at this dynasty; an offer I immediately inked!

Since 1877, the Lopez de Heredia family has done one thing with fanatical zeal: produce authentic Rioja that lasts, mythically long-lived and released after decades, only when wine and winemaker determine the perfect moment. This dedication and zeal cannot be overstated; there are no other producers quite like them. Crianza selections released with years of age, Reserva bottlings held for a dozen years, Gran Reservas resting for what must seem like an eternity for their fans.

Following the appreciation of the 2007 vintage from María José López de Heredia, the red 2007 Viña Tondonia Reserva is showing great, revealing unusual finesse and elegance. The nose is a little reticent but nuanced and complex, a little shy rather than explosive. The palate is medium-bodied, and the tannins are very refined. This has to be one of the finest vintages of Viña Tondonia Reserva of recent years. 200,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2015.
