The 2010 Pinot Noir Spanish Springs (from a site in Edna Valley) is a gorgeous wine laced with expressive plums, dark red cherries and spices, all supported by clean veins of minerality. This juicy, fruit-forward Pinot needs to be enjoyed over the next few years. Winemaker Sashi Moorman used 20% whole clusters here. This is a lovely showing. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2016.

If fairly tight and not at all forthcoming in the nose, this one unwinds a bit as its sits and shows a modest measure of clean and correct, cherry-like fruit. It is limited, however, by a slight narrowness throughout, and its finish is stiffened and pinched by very obvious acidity. It is built in a way that encourages age, yet we would be more comfortable in waiting if it conveyed a little more substance and depth.
