Chardonnay from Carneros, California
B-21 Top Recommendation

Frank Family Vineyards has earned a loyal following for their consistently outstanding wines priced well below their fellow Napa competitors, and these Napa Valley selections are no exception, a spectrum of ready-to-enjoy wines from outstanding California vintages, ranging from their opulent Carneros Chardonnay to a top-scoring Napa Cab described as "superb" by Antonio Galloni of Vinous, all delivering exceptional value.

Working from 380 acres of estate vineyards in Carneros, Rutherford, and Capell Valley, long-time winemaker and GM Todd Graff employs the same barrel aging across the entire Napa line-up, utilizing a mix of one-third new French oak barrels with one-third once-used barrels and one-third twice-used barrels. Sourced from cooler climate vineyards in Carneros, the luscious 2023 Frank Family Vineyard Chardonnay balances rich, fragrant fruit and a creamy texture from lees stirring with bright acidity, while the aromatic 2022 Frank Family Pinot Noir reveals fresh, juicy fruit hinting of earthy spice with vibrant acidity on a satiny finish. The 2021 Frank Family Vineyard Zinfandel offers ripe, dark bramble fruit layered with pepper and spice from estate vineyards in Capell Valley and Rutherford, while the smooth and satisfying, 2022 Frank Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon contains well-integrated tannins that promise a decade of longevity.

2021 Vajra Barolo Albe (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"Stylistically, the Vajra Barolos embody all the virtues of modern classicism. The wines are elegant, silky, polished and an absolute delight to drink." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

You know the name, and perhaps you already know that the 2021 vintage in Barolo is one for the books, so let's jump right into this set of stunning new releases from "one of the leading estates in Piedmont."

As any astute Barolo collector knows, a great vintage is marked not only by the heights that the top wines reach, but by the overall quality of the entry-level offerings, and Vajra's flagship Albe bottling knocks it out of the park in 2021. Wine Advocate's Monica Larner tagged it with 95 points and called it "an enormously versatile expression of Nebbiolo, with an affordable price, that offers more value for your money than most Barolos out there," with several other critics chiming in with their own glowing praise for a serious sub-$40 contender.

Movnig to the single crus, Vajra's enviable stable is a star-studded affiair in this benchmark campaign, led by a pair of 98-point collectible treasures in the Ravera and Bricco della Viole, the latter "a wine of stature and breeding" showcasing "little details [that] emerge with terrific sharpness in an epic vintage such as 2021." Of course, we shouldn't overlook the 96-point Coste di Rose. "Loaded with finesse" per Kerin O'Keefe, "[it's] already tempting, [but] the best is yet to come."

It's safe to say this is one of the must-have ranges in 2021 Barolo, so collectors should make room in the cellar and cast a wide net on these guaranteed long-haul trophies.

95WA 94JD 94JS 94KO 93D

Do you have a favorite pair of jeans or a favorite dress that you keep in your closet for all occasions? That's the equivalent of this wine. The G.D. Vajra 2021 Barolo Albe is an enormously versatile expression of Nebbiolo, with an affordable price, that offers more value for your money than most Barolos out there. The bouquet focuses on dark berry, pressed flower and crushed stone. It offers good sharpness over broad lines. The mouthfeel is medium-plus in texture and it closes with silky, accessible tannins. Fruit comes from three cru sites: Coste di Vergne, Fossati and La Volta.

95 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jan 2025)

The 2021 Barolo Albe continues to be one of the best values the region has to offer and punches far above its weight class in this vintage. The nose is ripe with fresh, layered notes of pure red cherries, fresh flowers, anise, and refined spices. The palate is fantastic and pure, with a long finish. This is one of the best vintages of this wine I have tasted to date, revealing great definition of structure and a refreshing feel that makes this a fantastic go-to option to check in on again and again as it ages. I would snap these up and get a case or two if you can. Drink over the coming 15-20 years.

94 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2025)

Violets with dried flowers and hints of blueberries and menthol. This has a juicy profile of fruit that complements a big tannin structure that concludes with a firm, tightly wound finish and just a touch of shy fruit. Approachable now, but best in 2026.

94 points, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

The 2021 Albe is a fantastic Barolo, starting with its alluring fragrance of red berries, dark spices, dog rose and a balsamic whiff of camphor. The palate shows youthful tension tempered by succulent raspberries, orange peel, star anise and crushed mint framed in taut, fine-grained tannins. Made with Nebbiolo organically grown in high-altitude vineyards, it has bright acidity that keeps it energized.

94 points, Kerin O'Keefe (Jan 2025)

This multi-MGA Barolo is assembled from the estate’s younger vines, though the average age is a respectably mature 30 years. Winemaker Giuseppe Vaira calls it a ‘blend with immediate drinkability’. Indeed, it is irresistible now with its becoming and animated scents of pepper-inflected strawberry, dried violet and crushed allspice. The palate is silky and refined, with crunchy red fruit clarity. Layered tannins support it without overtaking – very seamlessly knit. It promises to divulge even more with just a bit more time in the bottle.

"...one of the better values in all of California wine." - Matthew Luczy, Wine Advocate

The long-awaited new release of this all-time B-21 best seller is here. Stolpman's La Cuadrilla has been a bona fide value champion for us for several vintages running, and it's basically cornered our market on sub-$20 California reds.

A blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Sangiovese, this spectacular, "lights out" favorite has always brought its A-game big time, and that all continues apace in 2023. "Bright, punchy and full of character, the 2023 delivers superb quality and striking purity of fruit," notes Antonio Galloni. Made every year by the estate's vineyard workers, who then split the proceeds from sales, this is a true wine of community and collective effort and reward.

There's not much else to say – if you're already fan, then make some room and stock up like you always do. The 2023 La Cuadrilla is ready to rock with stunning character and unbeatable value, just like it always has.

92WA 92V 91WE 91JS

A blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Sangiovese whose proceeds are divided among Stolpman's vineyard workers, the 2023 La Cuadrilla is one of the better values in all California wine. It opens with a beautifully floral, energetic nose supplemented with focused, leathery accents. The palate is plush and succulent, concluding with a quenching, juicy and simply delicious finish framed by fine-grained tannins.

92 points, Matthew Luczy, Wine Advocate (Oct 2024)

The 2023 La Cuadrilla is a fabulous entry-level offering. Bright, punchy and full of character, the 2023 delivers superb quality and striking purity of fruit. It’s also a fabulous value. This blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Sangiovese is lights-out.

92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Aug 2024)

This vineyard crew-led blend is always a charmer. The blend of 50% Syrah, 20% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre and 15% Sangiovese offers dark cherry, berry and cigar box aromas on the nose. The palate lands with ripe fruit and toasty flavors, floating atop young, sticky tannins and a zippy acidity.

91 points, Matt Kettmann, Wine Enthusiast (Dec 2024)

Henri Giraud's artfully crafted Champagnes are mainstays at B-21, with a thrilling line-up anchored by the overwhelming fan-favorite Esprit Brut Nature. We've always considered it an overperforming value, and now we've secured special pricing, under $50 for a limited time.

"Medium-bodied, round and sappy, it's slightly creamy, with an elegant, fresh mid-palate that segues into an ethereal, long finish..." - Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate

Add to our must-see pricing some new, impressive reviews, and you have a can't-miss Champagne proposition that any devoted bubbles fan would be wise to jump at. An already glowing 95-point review from James Suckling earlier in the summer is complemented by Wine Advocate's Yohan Castaing, who recently tagged the Esprit with his own solid 93-point review on his way to declaring "the Champagnes from this house to be among the finest, most elegant and most precise that I tasted on my last trip." This latest release is another notch of success in the estate's transition to a much more elegant, refined style in recent years, and it shows the kind of tremendous upward trajectory that makes today's opportunity to stock up at a steal all the more compelling.

95JS 93WA

The creamy texture is so enticing on the palate, because it intentionally has slightly less bubbles, with light strawberry and brioche and a hint of tangerine. Medium body with a pretty core of fruit and a fine, velvety finish. Base wine all fermented in barrel. 30% reserve wine and the base is 2020. 80% pinot noir and 20% chardonnay. Drink now.

95 points, James Suckling (Aug 2024)

Based on the 2020 vintage, the NV Brut Esprit Nature displays an iodine-inflected and elegant bouquet of menthol, anise, licorice, white peach and spices intertwined with notes of clementine. Medium-bodied, round and sappy, it's slightly creamy, with an elegant, fresh mid-palate that segues into an ethereal, long finish. Bottled in 2021, it was disgorged in November 2023 with a dosage of five grams per liter. This is a blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay.

2023 Coudoulet de Beaucastel (750ml)
Grenache from Côtes du Rhône, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"... yet another outstanding red Beaucastel with the potential to match or even outperform the delicious 2022." - Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous

One of the most anticipated Rhône releases in any vintage is Beaucastel's reference-point Châteauneuf-du-Pape, and the 97-point 2023 delivers everything we expect from this iconic estate. The warm, dry growing season provided optimal conditions for all the estate's varietals to excel and the finished wine is classic Beaucastel in all respects. Jeb Dunnuck notes, "It has the purity, medium to full-bodied richness, and ripe, yet still fresh and lively style of the vintage and brings plenty of mid-palate depth, sweet tannins, and a great finish." The year saw a higher-than-usual Mourvedre content in the blend, so you can count on this rendition to cruise in the cellar, but the freshness and vibrancy of the Grenache components (with help of the highly aromatic Terret Nori, Vaccarese, and Muscardin) make it a true charmer right out of the gate. James Suckling's Rhône critic Stuart Pigott declares it "full-bodied but with a lightness of touch. Then the power and stony intensity pour over you in a giant wave. The freshness is extraordinary for this hot and dry vintage." In other words, one of France's leading wine estates hit another home run, and collectors can add this superb rendition to their cellars for a razor-sharp price.

While you wait for the Châteauneuf to come around, you can also stock up on the 2023 Coudoulet de Beaucastel. Reflecting its well-earned reputation as "the Baby Beaucastel," the 2023 Coudoulet de Beaucastel is a solidly built, age-worthy Côtes-du-Rhône that takes the category a step up in terms of quality, character, and pedigree – the Coudoulet vines lie just on the "wrong side" of the road from Beaucastel's official Châteauneuf parcels, so the moniker isn't just a trope. Soils, micro-climates, and vine heritage are all similar, so the Coudoulet wine always offers glimpses of its world-class terroir. This JS93 "solid, focused, juicy and poised wine" is picture-perfect introduction to the vintage at Beaucastel.

Finally, as icing on the cake, serious collectors shouldn't miss a chance to add a monumental vintage of the legendary Hommage à Jacques Perrin to their cellars at unbeatable pricing. The 2022 Hommage is a triple 98-point masterpiece and collectible cornerstone that sets the bar for the appellation and the vintage. "Combining mind-boggling intensity with impressive verticality, the full-bodied 2022 is one of the wines of the vintage," notes Nicolas Greinacher of Vinous. Yohan Castaing's own 98-point Wine Advocate review likewise calls it "a spectacular and immense wine ... [and] a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts." With the amply seductive style of the vintage, it's also likely to give off serious fireworks right now if you're the impatient type. Either way, this is a no-brainer opportunity for anyone who's serious about the world's greatest collectible wines.

At every stage of the hierarchy and every price tier, Beaucastel proves its mettle time and time again, and these latest releases are unequivocal gems for any fan of Southern Rhône's best wines.

93JS 92WA 92JD

A solid, focused, juicy and poised wine, showing red berries, sweet spices and dried-flower aromas. Medium-bodied with finely grained tannins. Lovely crushed-strawberry character to the silky texture. Bright and fruit-forward, this has a seductive, succulent finish and a lift of peppercorns. Drink or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (Apr 2025)

The 2023 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel reveals aromas of dark berries, flowers, spices and garrigue, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, round and charming palate framed by velvety tannins. It concludes with a long, fruity and gourmand finish. This is a great vintage for Coudoulet—a blend of 30% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache Noir, 30% Syrah and 10% Cinsault.

92 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Oct 2025)

Bottled three months ago and showing beautifully, the 2023 Côtes Du Rhône Coudoulet De Beaucastel is based on 30% each of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre with 10% Cinsault and brought up all in foudre. It offers darker berries, pepper, sappy flowers, and some obvious stony, earth-like minerality in a medium-bodied, nicely concentrated, layered style. It's balanced with terrific purity, ripe tannins, and outstanding length, offering incredible pleasure today, yet it will keep for 10-12 years. Drink 2025-2036.

2021 Marques de Murrieta Reserva (750ml)
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"It's very Rioja, with clout, elegance and freshness and the elegant tannins that are the signature of 2021 ... Bravo!" - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Declared "one of Rioja's most iconic labels" by Decanter's Clive Pursehouse, Marques de Murrieta is a bastion of classically styled Rioja. These top-scoring flagship Reserva, the signature Gran Reserva, and the highly coveted Castillo Ygay are all emblematic of the estate's reputation for benchmark Rioja expressions with top-tier cellar potential.

A standard bearer for value every vintage, the double 96-point 2021 Rioja Reserva seems to have hit a new benchmark for this flagship cuvée in "one one of the finest vintages in recent times," as Luis Gutiérrez describes the 2021 campaign in Rioja. "Even more outstanding than the 2020" (which garnered big press in its own right), this rendition is the epitome of an overachiever. For under $30, you can enjoy a world-class Rioja tonight or you can stack the cellar. "Elegant yet perfectly structured ... It offers immediate appeal but will age gracefully for many years to come," declares Decanter. Simply put, wine lovers of all stripes will be hard pressed to find better bang for their buck.

96JD 96D 95WA 94V 94JS

Even more outstanding than the 2020, the incredibly priced 2021 Reserva is young in boisterous blue fruit, with a generous, full-bodied palate of richness and upfront power. The tannins add length and breadth to the wine, which is tasting great and could go another 10-15 years.

96 points, Virginie Boone, Jeb Dunnuck (Jan 2026)

Elegant yet perfectly structured, this is the most floral of the Murrieta Reservas I’ve tasted in recent years. With 8% Graciano and 4% Mazuelo, the nose is perfumed with pretty rose petal and delicate red berry fruit, as well as wild herbal aromas. Blueberry fruit typical of Tempranillo directs the palate, rounded out with a little fleshy Garnacha, and framed by subtle American oak. It offers immediate appeal but will age gracefully for many years to come.

96 points, Beth Willard, Decanter (Feb 2025)

Their flagship wine comes from one of the finest vintages in recent times. The 2021 Marqués de Murrieta was previously called the Reserva and still qualifies as such, but it's not included in the name now. It was produced with 86% Tempranillo, 8% Graciano, 4% Mazuelo and 2% Garnacha Tinta from their 300 hectares of vines in their Ygay estate on limestone and clay soils with alluvial influence. The grapes were picked between the 27th of September and the 15th of October, and each plot and variety was vinified separately in stainless steel, matured in American oak barrels for 26 months, then blended and kept in concrete for a few months until bottling, which was a longer élevage this year. It's very spicy, peppery, with a combination of berry fruit and some incipient tertiary aromas, hints of forest floor and truffle. It's very Rioja, with clout, elegance and freshness and the elegant tannins that are the signature of 2021. It comes in at 14.3% alcohol with a pH of 3.6, denoting ripeness and balance. It's delicious, fresh and available. Bravo! This will be released in May 2025. 900,000 bottles produced. It was bottled from May to July 2024.

95 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Feb 2025)

The 2021 Marqués de Murrieta blends 86% Tempranillo, 4% Mazuelo, 8% Graciano and 2% Garnacha. This aged for 26 months in barrels. The complex nose offers cherry, traces of camphor and cassis, dried flowers and blood orange. In the mouth, it's juicy, supple and layered, with flexible tannins and a rich, sustained finish. The 2021 is a refined, expressive red enhanced by an elegant vintage.

94 points, Joaquín Hidalgo, Vinous (May 2025)

This shows vibrant cherries, spiced plums, blue fruit and superb balance with well-hidden oak. Firm and really harmonious, it has a bit more prominence of fruit and fine-grained tannins than the 2020. Drink from 2026.

2021 Mazzei Concerto di Fonterutoli (750ml)
Merlot from Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"…plush and resonant to the core." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Crafted as a forerunner to the Super Tuscan movement and one of the region's top rated international blends, the elegantly balanced, triple 96-point 2021 Mazzei Concerto is a seamless combination of fresh, vibrant Sangiovese fruit and the layered opulence of rich Cabernet Sauvignon, produced from the legendary Mazzei family's hillside Tuscany.

Initially crafted as an "outright experiment" in 1981 and now celebrating its 40th anniversary, the cuvée was christened "Concerto" to pay homage to its harmonious expression of the estate's two most important varietals. The Sangiovese comes from a parcel in the estate's mid-slope terroir called Scassi, and the Cabernet Sauvignon is sourced from the small Brotine parcel with a unique microclimate created by the surrounding oak forest. Winemaker Gionata Puglignani aged the Sangiovese in French oak tonneaux and the Cabernet Sauvignon in smaller French oak barriques for 18 months with four additional months in concrete tanks before bottling, yielding lush, juicy fruit in an enticing, seamless blend described by Decanter as "a really delicious, mouthwatering compelling glass of wine" that's built to evolve over the next few decades.

Described as "intense and vivid … a delicious bottle that is easy to recommend" by Anson, the 2021 Concerto is available at market-best pricing, so fans and collectors of bold Italian blends can stock up and reach for it again and again.

96WA 96JA 96D 95JS 94V 94WI

The Mazzei 2021 Concerto di Fonterutoli shows a lifted bouquet with floral aromas of lavender, iris and delicate earthy tones at the back. There is plenty of primary fruit over well-integrated oak and soft tannins. Rainfall was happily abundant in this vintage, and the harvest was extremely rewarding, resulting in very healthy grapes. Analytical results underline fruit concentration, high polyphenolic values and a good sugar to acidity ratio.

96 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Nov 2024)

A delicious, measured and carefully structured wine, builds slowly through the palate, has typicity of Tuscan Sangiovese in its generosity, held in where it needs to be, and bursting with juicy red fruits, dark spices, turmeric, clove, tobacco, tar. Savoury and yet generous, with mouthwatering juiciness on the finish. Located in Castellina in Chianti, winemaker Gionata Puglignani, owned by the Mazzei family. Ageing in small French oak barrels for the Cabernet Sauvignon, larger sized for the Sangiovese, 70% new, plus three months in concrete tanks before release. Second tasting after a recent vertical, absolutely confirms its success.

96 points, Jane Anson (Aug 2023)

Sweet, baked red fruits with rose and pink floral aromas on the nose alongside touches of clove, toast and cinnamon. Smooth and soft in the mouth, rich yet elegant with a supple core of strawberry, cherry and raspberries lifted by high acidity and such excellent tannins. Fully flavoured with a mineral, iron, salty tang that lingers on the tongue from the mid palate onwards with tobacco and dried spices providing nice contrast to the ripe, herbal-edged fruit. A really delicious, mouthwatering compelling glass of wine. Succulent and oh so lifted and juicy. Wondrous with a lingering sense of Italian sunshine and dried scrubland. Ageing 18 months in French oak barrels; large tonneaux for Sangiovese (80% of the blend) and smaller barriques for the Cabernet Sauvignon (20%) plus three months in concrete tanks.

96 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Aug 2023)

This is spicy and vibrant with a mix of red and dark berries with dried citrus peel, chili pepper and spicy herbs. Hints of bark, too. Full with layers of polished tannins and chalky, powdery texture. Juicy acidity coming through. Shows depth and concentration. Racy and long. Better from 2026.

95 points, James Suckling (Sep 2023)

The 2021 Concerto di Fonterutoli, Mazzei's Sangiovese/Cabernet Sauvignon blend, is plush and resonant to the core. Punchy, red-toned fruit, blood orange, cedar and spice all come together effortlessly, with plush, silky tannins that wrap it all together. Today the Sangiovese is super-expressive.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Aug 2023)

The 2021 Concerto Fonterutoli, 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It flies out with fragrant notes of cherry cordial, redcurrants, and roses, plus touches of garrigue, dried Provence herbs, and tobacco leaf. The full-bodied palate is taut with muscular red berry and savory flavors, supported by firm, chewy tannins and bright acidity, finishing with impressive length and energy.

2023 Saint Damien Les Souteyrades (750ml)
Grenache from Gigondas, Rhône, France

"Continuing to deliver exceptional value for money, the red wines from Domaine Saint-Damien deserve a place on everyone’s Gigondas watchlist." - Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous

"These are brilliant, layered, textured Gigondas that represent insane values." - Jeb Dunnuck

The above comments pretty much sum up everything you need to know about the all-time best-seling Gigondas stunners from Domaine Saint-Damien. Year after year, they hit the mark with a track record that's easily among the most consistent in the Southern Rhône, and the newly arrived 2023s keep the trend going with monster 98-point scores from Dunnuck, as well as our customary razor-sharp pricing.

The 2023 Les Souteyrades (80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre) is from 50- to 80-year-old vines on quarternary soils in the lower terraced section of Gigondas, which accounts for the wine's heady, exotic character. "It's another absolutely riveting Gigondas from this estate that readers should snatch up!" declares Dunnuck. Although not as widely known as Les Souteyrades, the La Louisiane bottling is no less impressive with its inclusion of small amounts of Cinsault and Syrah giving the wine a decidely darker "ultra-classic Gigondas style." From 50- to 85-year-old vines on poor alluvial soils speckled with red clay, the 2023 La Louisiane is "a brilliant effort that will stand toe to toe with anything in the vintage."

Best of all, these collectible-caliber showstoppers come in at remarkable sub-$40 pricing that makes it easy to stock up for the long-haul, as the track record of previous vintages suggests that these have a long life ahead of them in the cellar.

98JD

Based on 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvèdre and aged 12 months in foudres, the 2023 Gigondas Les Souteyrades is possibly the most exotic of the lineup from Saint-Damien. Kirsch liqueur, blackberries, exotic flowers, and sappy, garrigue-like nuances all define the bouquet, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a pure, layered, seamless mouthfeel, an incredible mix of richness and elegance, and a gorgeous finish. It's another absolutely riveting Gigondas from this estate that readers should snatch up! Drink 2026-2037.

"...there's a compact feel to this firm red but also a sense of balance and integration." - Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator

As dominant as Rioja is in the Spanish collectible space, its penchant for delivering outstanding everyday values is also unmatched. The latest entry proving the point is Ramirez de la Piscina's charming 92-point 2020 Selección Reserva, a rock-solid performer for the cellar or the table at an easy case-buy price. The estate's style is purely reflective of the terroir in Ábalos and San Vicente de la Sonsierra, yielding wines of chalky finesse, refined tannins, and old-school complexity. For the Reserva, however, they take a decidedly New World approach in the oak regimen and fruit profile. James Suckling sums it up as "A dense and full-bodied Rioja ... Chewy and firm, with wood-soaked tannins, yet it doesn't overpower the rich dark berry and plum fruit." If you're a fan of Rioja, this is a razor-sharp buy to add to the cellar for future enjoyment, but it can also occupy a starring role in your regular rotation thanks to our must-see, sub-$20 price.

92WS 91V

Up front there's a compact feel to this firm red but also a sense of balance and integration. Opens in the glass, revealing a fragrant overtone of dried flowers, eucalyptus, star anise and mocha, with flavors of plumped cherry and baked plum that linger on the finish. Best from 2026 through 2035. 1,000 cases made, 300 cases imported.

92 points, Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator (Mar 2025)

The 2020 Reserva Selección is Tempranillo sourced from San Vicente de la Sonsierra and Ábalos, Rioja Alta. Aged for 16 months in new oak barrels (50/50 American and French), this purple wine presents caramel and lactic notes, along with enveloping vanilla, cedar and coconut tones atop a black-fruited core. Dry, creamy and juicy on the palate, the fine-grained, fairly chalky mouthfeel lingers with an oaky flavor. This is a New World expression of Rioja red.

"Sweetly spiced and creamy yet with a vibrant core..." - James Suckling

Few producers in California display such consistent quality up and down their range as Paso Robles' Daou Vineyards. Their top-end collectibles routinely pull in massive scores, but at the same time, their entry-level offerings are some of the best in the game, as we see in today's sub-$20, 94-point gem of a Chardonnay. Sourced exclusively from old-vine parcels in Edna Valley, the 2023 Reserve is a pure example of the best features of California Chardonnay, marrying ripeness with balance, which results in a profile with serious appeal to a wide audience. Sure, there are plenty of sub-$20 Chardonnay options out there, but only a select few can match the pedigree and style of this must-try beauty from a true Paso Robles icon.

2020 Larrivet Haut Brion Rouge (750ml)
Merlot from Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

"Confirming my expectations, the 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is one of the best wines ever produced at this estate." - Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate

As part of the general trend of overperforming Pessac estates in the past decade, Larrivet Haut-Brion's stock is steadily rising among the critical press and Bordeaux enthusiasts alike. Thanks to the guiding hand of famed enologist Michel Rolland, the style of the estate's wines has taken on an unprecedented level of class and polish culminating in the spectacular 2022 vintage. Following the overall character of the vintage, this triple 95-point, sub-$50 standout is "a dramatic, deeply resonant wine" with loads of structural stuffing to go the distance in the cellar.

To further emphasize the estate's marvelous recent trajectory, we also have four back-vintage gems on offer that showcase how well Larrivet performs year in and year out. The 2016 is now in its prime drinking window where it will remain for years, while the 95-point 2019 shows "a rich, broad, mouth-filling, spicy, complex and full-bodied style that has loads to love" per Jeb Dunnuck. Keen-eyed collectors also won't sleep on the AG95 rendition from the "off-vintage" of 2017. "Bold, rich and intense, the 2017 exudes tremendous depth and intensity ... Readers should expect a wine of real energy and explosive power," declares Galloni.

All in all, we love featuring Pessac, because the appellation is rife with stupendous collectible values, and while collectors often focus on building verticals of Bordeaux's most hallowed names, this line-up proves that you can get tremendous mileage out of doing the same with under-the-radar gems like Larrivet.

95JD 94V 94WE 94WI 93WA 93WS 93JA 93D

The 2020 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion is a gorgeous, incredibly satisfying Pessac, and it's certainly up with the finest vintages I've tasted from this estate. It has lots of red, blue, and black fruits as well as ample spice, leafy tobacco, truffle, and smoked earth, and it develops a beautiful sense of complexity and nuance with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it shows the vibrant, elegant style of the vintage, has ripe tannins, perfect overall balance, and a great finish. If you love a great Graves, buy a case of this beauty and enjoy over the next two decades. This estate continues to fly too far under the radar for most consumers.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

The 2020 Larrivet Haut-Brion is a powerful, dark wine marked by strong Cabernets that lend tons of aromatic presence and sheer density. This virile, explosive Pessac-Léognan packs quite the punch. Blackberry, gravel, licorice and grilled herbs are some of the notes that build in this deep, expansive wine. Superb.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2023)

This estate, at the top of its game, has produced a structured wine with great berry fruits and a good future. A series of impressive tannins are fully integrated into the wine's freshness. Drink from 2026.

94 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Apr 2023)

The 2020 Larrivet Haut-Brion Rouge is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot, and 13% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a little shaking to wake up scents of fresh red and black currants followed by hints of clove oil, dried roses, and unsmoked cigars. The medium-bodied palate is elegantly styled and light on its feet, with a refreshing backbone and ripe, fine-grained tannins, finishing long and fragrant.

94 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Mar 2023)

The 2020 Larrivet Haut-Brion bursts with aromas of red berries, vine smoke, orange rind and petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, lively and complete palate built around powdery tannins and vibrant fruit flavors. The team employed some whole bunch for their old vine Cabernet Franc this year, and the results are excellent. This is an impressively vibrant, harmonious wine from this address.

93 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2023)

Quite ripe, with a mix of loganberry, mulberry and plum compote flavors that move through slowly, framed with alder, savory and red tea accents. Everything melds steadily through the finish, picking up red tea and bay leaf hints along the way. A strong effort for the vintage. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2025 through 2035. 7,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.

93 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2023)

Thoroughly enjoyable Larrivet Haut-Brion, firm tannins, leather and liqourice, blackberry and cassis fruits, silky smooth texture, this is good qualilty and confident. Interesting ageing here, with 100% new oak for Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, and entirely amphora for Merlot, 28hl/h yield.

93 points, Jane Anson (Feb 2023)

Such a perfumed nose of roses and violet-edged blackcurrants and plums. Fragrant and alluring. Also bright and floral on the palate, really quite marked with nuance and detail. Lovely expression, it’s not super-ripe or in your face, more delicate yet still quite dark with lots of sticky liquorice and cinnamon edges. Cool, crushed stone element gives freshness and expanse. Really quite juicy, though also lean on the palate. Not hugely wide, more vertical in depth, with tons of freshness, mintiness and spice however, the acidity is there and the tannins are fine. Just remains quite focused and sleek with a cool blue fruit edge and lots of salty minerality that lingers on the finish. Well worked, needs more time.

2021 Vajra Barolo Bricco delle Viole (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy

98JD 97WA 97WS 97JS 96V

The 2021 Barolo Bricco Delle Viole is more refined and complete at this tasting, with more depth than the Coste delle Rose, exhibiting notes of raspberry liqueur, pressed flowers, sweet herbs, and fresh earth. A very pure and well-balanced vintage for this wine, it really shines with exceptional detail, offering even tannins and a balanced, seamless structure throughout. It feels as though this wine will offer the broadest window for enjoyment, thanks to its purity and length, which are quite profound. Drink over the coming decades. In the cellar, it underwent 51 days of submerged cap maceration, followed by 24 months of cask aging before being bottled.

98 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2025)

The organic G.D. Vajra 2021 Barolo Bricco delle Viole first shows a fragile side, but it eventually rolls onto much greater momentum and focus as it opens in the glass. This is always one of my favorite wines from this excellent producer, and I love it especially thanks to its fine nuances of redcurrant, pressed flower and something a little savory like peat moss. There is a hint of ashy stone or brimstone. All of these little details emerge with terrific sharpness in an epic vintage such as 2021. Fruit comes from a seven-hectare plot at 400 to 480 meters in elevation on Sant'Agata marl soils with marine fossils.

97 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jan 2025)

This red is rich and succulent, displaying cherry, raspberry, earth, leather and eucalyptus flavors. A mineral note emerges as this builds to the long, red fruit– and rose hip–stained finish. Best from 2028 through 2046. From Italy.

97 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Aug 2025)

Dark cherries, orange rind, dried flowers and cinnamon on the nose. The palate is incisive and medium- to full-bodied with tender fruit, refined and polished tannins and a long, persistent, flavorful finish. Elegant and almost ethereal in essence. Really well crafted and detailed. Better in 2026.

97 points, Jacobo Garcia-Andrade Llamas, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

The 2021 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is a wine of stature and breeding. Vertical in shape, the Bricco delle Viole has so much to offer. Dark-toned fruit, leather, incense, gravel and licorice add an attractive savory edge. The 2021 is an especially somber, potent Bricco delle Viole. I would not dream of touching a bottle anytime soon.

2023 Chateau Beaucastel Rouge (750ml)
Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France

97JS 96JD 96D

Dense licorice and forest berry aromas mask the deep tannin structure of this Chateauneuf-du-Pape masterpiece. Full-bodied but with a lightness of touch. Then the power and stony intensity pour over you in a giant wave. The freshness is extraordinary for this hot and dry vintage. Serious tannins in the very long, compact and refined finish. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2027.

97 points, Stuart Pigott, James Suckling (Apr 2025)

The estate lost some Grenache due to shatter, so the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape is based on 40% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, 10% Counoise, 10% Syrah, and the rest a mix of permitted varieties. It was all destemmed except for the Syrah and brought up in foudre. The higher Mourvèdre component gives it a more serious, focused style than most in the vintage, and it has darker blackberry fruits intermixed with roasted herbs, spring flowers, violets, and some meaty nuances on the nose. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, with a deep, pure, layered mouthfeel, it has ripe, velvety, yet building tannins and a great finish. Another beautiful vintage for this cuvée, it has the approachable style of the vintage yet brings more than enough density and concentration to evolve for 30 years. Drink 2025-2054.

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2025)

A tasting of the constituent parts this year, so this is a provisional score. The Terret Noir, Muscardin and Vaccarèse were fermented together; they provide the more fragrant top notes, bright and attractive if not deep. The Cinsault was perfumed and fresh, with fine tannins. The Counoise was more savoury, with more depth and tannin; tense and saline, and spicy thanks to 50% whole-bunch fermentation. The Grenache was soft and supple, fairly dark in colour, quite structured, with impressive freshness, tannins and acidity. The Syrah was deep, intense, black-fruited and peppery – quite potent in alcohol, with intense tannins. The Mourvèdre will be 30% of the blend, contributing mouthcoating, deep and succulent tannins, plenty of flesh and quite high alcohol. The overall impression is a deliciously rich and ripe Beaucastel, not as structured as the 2022, that is likely to score around 95-96 once blended and bottled.

The 2021 Barolo Ravera comes from an amphitheater-shaped vineyard that captures the sunlight, which the producers believe is what gives this cuvée its depth and richness. In the glass, the nose of the 2021 Barolo Ravera is remarkably concentrated, revealing notes of black raspberry and grenadine, fresh leather, and pressed flowers, with a long and sustained feel. The generous sweetness of fruit and its more noble, ripe tannins come through on the mid-palate, but it has a lot of finesse on the finish. The sapidity and purity of the fruit meets the tannins and acidity where they are fabulously. The estate keeps improving these wines, and this one is exceptional. Harvested over three days, it saw 55 days of submerged cap maceration, followed by 26 months of cask aging. In 2021, they lost about 15% of this vineyard production due to spring frost.

98 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2025)

From one of the most sought-after crus sites today, the G.D. Vajra 2021 Barolo Ravera opens to a vibrant ruby color. The wine takes its time opening, especially when tasted young, but that delay bodes well for its future bottle evolution. This wine is built like a wall, with each brick representing its own distinct character. There is dark fruit, pressed flower, herb, ebony and a very elegant mineral side. The bouquet is direct and vertical, with lifted intensity over a medium-plus palate. The tannins are elegantly managed, and this wine has the latitude for long cellar aging. It ferments in stainless steel and ages in large oak casks.

97+ points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jan 2025)

This red is complex and solidly built, featuring black cherry, blackberry and black currant aromas and flavors. Iron, earth and underbrush accents chime in on the firm finish. Remains fresh and vibrant. Best from 2029 through 2050. From Italy.

From Scotland
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Since its founding in 2000, Compass Box has taken the boutique Scotch whisky scene by storm, thanks to their innovative approach to their craft. "Different from a distillery, more than a blender" is how they style themselves, and that description succinctly captures what they do. Working with an incredible range of stocks from Scotland's most admired distilleries, the blending team at Compass Box sets out to create highly distinctive, specific profiles that capture the nearly endless array of possibilities within the Scotch category.

In their core line-up, the Crimson Casks is a world-wide fan favorite, blended from impeccable stocks distilled at such esteemed facilities as Glen Moray, Benrinnes, and the "Distillery near the the town of Aberlour" (wink, wink) among others. With two-thirds of the blend comprised of oloroso sherry casks, along with some prime ex-bourbon and Spanish red wine casks thrown in for good measure, it's a luxurious, pleasure-packed dram that fulfills all the promise of its name. Big, boisterous, dark fruits, deep chocolate, resonant toffee, and all manner of sweet and spicy treats are on full display in a thrillingly complex profile that garnered 95 points from Wine Enthusiast to go along with 93 points and a Top 20 Whiskies of 2024 honor from Whisky Advocate. Now, with our best-in-market pricing, you can jump in on this singular Scotch stunner that delivers as much bang for the buck as anything out there.

Mesquite and peat smoke surround a core of succulent figs and dates drizzled with maple. Finishes long and lip-smacking with leather, espresso, cranberry, cocoa nibs and black pepper piquancy. This nut-brown Scotch is matured in oloroso sherry oak butts.

95 points, Kara Newman, Wine Enthusiast (Nov 2024)

One of the “core four” labels in Compass Box’s new lineup, along with Orchard House, Nectarosity, and The Peat Monster. Oloroso sherry casks play the starring role here, with two-thirds of the blend being oloroso-finished, creating deep color, sweetness, and a smooth texture. But it’s more subtle than just a sherry bomb, as there’s a lot going on: cinnamon spice and marzipan sweetness, creamy texture, layered flavors, and a long finish offering crème brûlée, baked red berries, brandy flambéed apricot, and more.

Cabernet Sauvignon from Stags Leap, California
B-21 Top Recommendation

Easily one of the most revered estates in all of California wine, Shafer is synonymous with Napa Valley, and particularly the striking (and strikingly expensive) Pritchard Hill terroir, Of course, the towering Hillside Select is an original California luxury blue chip, but we've always loved it's baby brother, the One Point Five, for its ability to translate the heart and soul of this remarkable estate for a fraction of the price of the Hillside.

"The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is stellar ... It’s a gorgeous bridge into the flagship Hillside Select." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

By first indications, the 2023 Napa vintage is shaping up to be one for the ages, so it's no surprise to see this Napa icon shining brightly once again. "Deep, pliant and resonant in the glass," the One Point Five nails the quintessential character of the 2023 growing season with real style and distinction, resulting in rock-solid press led by a 96-point review from Jeb Dunnuck, who calls it a "classic, serious wine" that even touches on a bit of Pauillac spirit for a sterling, benchmark display of Napa Cabernet brilliance.

96JD 94V 94JS

A bigger, darker Cabernet Sauvignon in the lineup, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five offers blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, gravelly earth, and cedar pencil notes that all shine beautifully. It's full-bodied and has a rich, layered, elegant mouthfeel, plenty of tannins, and a great finish. This classic, serious wine from this team deserves 4-5 years of bottle age and will have 25 years or more of longevity. Drink 2029-2049.

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2025)

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five is stellar. Deep, pliant and resonant in the glass, the One Point Five has so much to offer. Dark plum, blackberry, menthol and espresso all build effortlessly in the glass. It’s a gorgeous bridge into the flagship Hillside Select.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Nov 2025)

Generous and perfumed with aromas of blackberry confit, violets, licorice, cigar box and graphite. The palate is full-bodied with a densely packed mouthfeel and refined, polished tannins. A well-made and classy wine with plenty to offer. Drink or hold.

2023 Eric Forest Pouilly-Fuisse les Crays 1er Cru (750ml)
Chardonnay from Maconnais, Burgundy, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

His name doesn't appear much in the critical press these days, but Eric Forest quietly remains one of Pouilly-Fuissé most engaging and talented winemakers. Our Burgundy team recently paid a visit to his cellars, and they were thrilled to discover Eric and his wines in exceptional form. The range of 2023s got nods all around, but the Les Crays 1er Cru was the undisputed standout.

"One of the top three wines from our recent trip to Burgundy, and we’re thrilled to get it directly from the domaine’s cellars." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Burgundy Buyer

The Les Crays vineyard itself boasts every feature that makes a quintessential Pouilly-Fuissé Chardonnay - southerly exposure, very poor soils of broken limestone, moderate slope, and old vines (these planted between 1930 and 1966). At the foot of the famed Roche de Vergisson, Les Crays is terroir excellence in a nutshell, and Forest's 2023 "is a head-turning expression that shows why this vineyard is a bona fide 1er cru," according to Andrew. It's a complete wine in every sense that is already starting to synch its components into a harmonious whole that will only gain in complexity and personality over the coming several years.

Further underscoring the excellence of Forest's domaine holdings are his old-vine, single-vineyard gems from Terre Noire in St-Véran and Clos des Charmes in Mâcon-Pierreclos. The former comes from a small, 100-year-old parcel on dark clay over bleached white limestone, and it's "easily the most concentrated and intense wine in Forest’s line-up," tightly wound today but with utterly compelling cellar potential for the medium to long term. The latter, by contrast, is an "upfront, charming yet precisely crafted gem ... with real style and substance that does everything it’s supposed to."

Today's Burgundy market is a wild place, and when you find a top-notch, single-vineyard expressions like these under $60, you jump at them, plain and simple.

96AK

The standout wine in Forest’s compelling line-up, the 2023 Les Crays 1er Cru is a head-turning expression that shows why this vineyard is a bona fide 1er cru. The shallow, pure limestone scree of the south-facing slope of the Roche de Vergisson is tailor-made white Burgundy terroir, with vines planted between 1930 and 1966. Meyer lemon, kaffir lime, spicy basil, and lemon verbena combine with super-fine limestone minerality to make a very pretty nose with pitch-perfect intensity as well as precision. Very faint touches of tropical fruit in the background hint at Les Crays’ sheltered micro-climate, but the chalk keeps them in check beautifully along with barely perceptible oak. The palate is a textbook lesson in tension, as the site’s ripe fruit character provides a stunning contrast to laser-focused acidity and extract, putting forth well-defined flavors of lemon and lime zest, kumquat, heady gardenia blossom, and a firm, pure, chalky spine to back it all up. The very slightest barrel tones add a layer of richness and texture that fan out on the exceptionally balanced finish. One of the top three wines from our recent trip to Burgundy, and we’re thrilled to get it directly from the domaine’s cellars.

The name says it all in this upfront, charming yet precisely crafted gem from the immensely talented Eric Forest. His 1.5ha monopole Clos des Charmes boasts exceptional pedigree for a village-level site, with vines averaging 80 years old (some as old as 100), pure colored clay and marl over limestone bedrock, and ideal south-facing exposition. The 2023’s aromatic constellation is beautifully defined already with citrus blossom, jasmine, ripe grapefruit, Amalfi lemon, and deep tree fruits. The minerality isn’t as prominent or intense as Forest’s other wines, but that’s all to the good, so pure and vibrant are the fruits and flowers. The palate offers a similarly forward yet complex mélange of lemon curd, lemon zest, bright Granny Smith apple, almost liquefied white flowers, and an easy-going, chalky undertone that helps to form the wine’s gentle but firm structure. Rounded acids give just enough textural grip to carry the ripe flavors to a medium-long finish with a great combination of tropical intensity and earthy foundation. All in all, a spot-on single-vineyard white Burgundy with real style and substance that does everything it’s supposed to.

Isle of Raasay Hebridean Gin
From Scotland

"I can’t think of a single application where this eminently stunning expression won’t work." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

Handcrafted, artisanal gin is having its moment in the spotlight, and some of the finest iterations are coming out of Scotland. We've featured the excellent, boutique single malts from the eponymously named Isle of Raasay Distillery on the far-flung island of the Hebrides on a few occasions, and today we're introducing you to their equally superb craft gin.

Made from a double-distilled base of Raasay's signature malt and juniper harvested from the island's wild, rugged interior, it's steeped with ten different botanicals of the highest quality, including sweet orange peel, lemon peel, coriander, orris root, and angelica root, while the base spirit itself carries a lovely black currant undertone that sets the stage for the "simply captivating" palate and "graceful and stately" aromatic profile. With a wild combination of luxurious, viscous texture and ethereal balance, it shows its artisanal pedigree in spades, and will make a perfect base for any and all of your favorite gin cocktails, or for sipping with a few rocks and a twist on a hot day. Best of all, you can add it to your bar for the sharpest price in the country.

92AK

Given that Raasay’s single-malts are so compelling, I was not at all surprised to find their gorgeous, artisanal gin in the same league. There are some truly excellent craft gins coming out of Scotland at the moment, and you can put this one right up with the best. Double-distilled from local Raasay juniper and their signature malt base on a copper malt spirit still, the new make is then steeped with 10 different botanicals in a vapor infusion process to preserve ultimate freshness and vibrancy. The nose is as stately and graceful as one could wish – very clean and very pretty with super-bright notes of fresh pine tips, lemon peel, rhubarb, and Sencha tea. The palate is something else. The base malt is so weighty and viscous, yet somehow the flavor profile keeps it light and balanced as citrusy notes compete with savory spices like cumin and coriander, all against a backdrop of juniper berry and black current undertones. The long finish shows flashes of tarragon, lime pith, and tonic. The round, velvety texture is simply captivating. I can’t think of a single application where this eminently stunning expression won’t work, and I haven’t even mentioned yet how incredibly stylish the bottle itself is. Talk about an eye catcher on the back bar! Pure gin excellence from the single-malt rising stars of the Hebrides.

"Acknowledging that 2019 is already a heralded vintage, the salient question is whether it represents the summit of the 2018, 2019 and 2020 triumvirate. 'Yes' is the answer. I have always felt that is the case." - Neal Martin, Vinous

Of course, you may or may not agree with Martin in terms of 2019 place in the "trifecta," but it's undeniable that is a truly spectacular Bordeaux vintage that has more than lived up to its day-one hype since the wine's have hit the market, hit collector's cellars, and found their way into the glasses of impatient enthusiasts. Luscious ripe fruits are underlined by tannins to give a wine that is both structured and concentrated. Rich tannins, spice aromas and power are all enclosed in this wine that is ready to age. Drink from 2026.

95 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2022)

Moving to the red, the 2019 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion is a rich, broad, mouth-filling, spicy, complex and full-bodied style that has loads to love. Giving up lots of mulled red and black fruits as well as tobacco leaf, loamy soil, and chocolaty nuances, I love its balance, it has ripe tannins, and it will drink nicely for 25 to 20 years.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Larrivet Haut-Brion charges out of the gate with bold notes of blackcurrant cordial, redcurrant preserves, and baked plum, plus hint of sauteed herbs and tobacco leaf. Full-bodied, it is jam-packed with opulent fruit framed by velvety tannins and just enough freshness, finishing savory.

94 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (May 2022)

An appealing sweetness on the nose alongside touches of blackcurrant leaf. This is lovely, a dark and cool style focussed on liquorice and clove flavours backed by a core of blue fruits - blueberries, cherries and plums. You can feel some tension to this too, layers of fruit are elegantly presented but with energy and a deep mid palate. Tannins are fine and soft, gently supporting the fruit which is almost in the background at this point. A touch of austere dryness towards the finish while the spiced elements take over. Needs time to come together more but this has lots of delicious aspects. A soft stoniness lingers in the background giving a dry, wet stone texture and almost spicy, mineral edge overall. Good quality, I like this a lot.

94 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Jan 2022)

The 2019 Larrivet Haut-Brion is terrific. Dark, fleshy and resonant in the glass. Wild cherry, tobacco, incense, leather, smoke and game all take shape in this potent wine. Franc top notes lend quite a bit of aromatic presence, but then again, Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc make up most of the blend. Once again, Larrivet Haut-Brion is a classy, under the radar gem. Tasted two times.

93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Black fruit, cherry stones, tar, walnut husk and undergrowth on the nose. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, finely knit tannins. Layered and polished with a firm, mineral finish. Try after 2024.

Winemaker Lucas Pichler is a renowned perfectionist with such confidence in his own skills and style that he recently decided to withdraw from the Vinea Wachau, the region's official wine classification organization that sets the criteria for the familiar Steinfeder, Federspiel, and Smaragd designations, instead opting to allow his wines to distinguish themselves on pure terroir character rather than empirical measures like residual sugar, ripeness, and alcohol levels.

Easily the most concentrated and intense wine in Forest’s line-up, the 2023 Terre Noire is a fascinating expression that truly captures this singular terroir in Haut Davayé, a 1ha plot of 100-year-old vines on dark clay soils, hence the vineyard name. Dig a little deeper though (60cm to be exact) and you’ll find nothing but bleached white, fractured limestone, and what results is a big, bracing, mineral wine of pure site character. The soil signature is front and center on the nose, but it leaves room for a complex interplay of deep lemon, bruised green apple, and Bosc pear. The oak is somewhat more prominent here than on Forest’s other cuvées, but it works very well as a counter to the strident minerality. The site’s old vines show through in the immensely concentrated palate, where very primary citrus and tree fruits take a backseat to the soil tones at the moment. Sappy mid-palate grip and texture lead to a surprisingly long finish inflected with wet rocks and smoky undertones. My bet is that this is nowhere near its prime form, so it should only get better as time allows all its big but disparate components to mesh and synchronize, at which point it will really be something all its own.

94JD 94WE 93V 92WS 92JS 92D

Showing beautifully, the 2018 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion sports a dense purple hue as well as a ripe, concentrated, sweetly fruited style to go with classic Pessac notes of sweet tobacco, blackcurrants, damp earth, chocolate, and charcoal. It has a solid sense of purity and freshness, plenty of ripe, sunny fruit, and classy, seamless tannins, all pointing toward a long drink window. I think it's a step up over the 2016. Enjoy bottles over the coming 20-25 years.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

Black fruits and tannins combine well in this structured wine. There is a succulent character to the fruit, with acidity and a fresh aftertaste working together. Still young, the wine should be ready from 2026

94 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2021)

The 2018 Larrivet Haut-Brion has developed into a gorgeous wine. There is plenty of the tannin I saw in my barrel tastings, and yet all the elements are so well balanced today. Iron, cedar, dried herbs, licorice, dried flowers and mint add striking savory undertones to this deceptively mid weight Pessac-Léognan. Larrivet Haut-Brion is one of the most distinctive reds of the vintage.

93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

Sleek and fresh, with a pretty beam of red currant and damson plum fruit lined with savory and mineral notes. Subtle tar hint on the finish adds some sneaky length. Nicely done. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2029. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 11,665 cases made.

92 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2021)

Spiced cherry, blackcurrant, dried oyster, black olive and bark on the nose. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, creamy tannins. Chewy and flavorful with a savory, mineral finish. Better from 2023.

Dark spice and slivers of black chocolate make this a gourmet Pessac-Léognan but showing restraint at the same time. Successful, and a reflection of how much work is being done at this property to ensure balanced wines full of personality.

The 2022 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion checks in as 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, and 18% Merlot that spent 16 months in barrel. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a beautifully perfumed, medium to full-bodied, elegant 2022 that has red, blue, and some black fruits, a lifted, floral perfume of incense, smoky tobacco, and blood orange, fine, polished tannins, and a great finish. It's beautifully done, and while it's already accessible, it should age beautifully for two decades.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2025)

Such beautiful aromas of blackberries, flowers, nettles and crushed stones follow through to a medium body with firm yet open tannins and a long and crunchy finish. Needs three or four years to come together but very well-constructed. 61% cabernet sauvignon, 21% cabernet franc and 18% merlot. 5% whole-bunch fermentation. Drink after 2029.

95 points, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

The 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is dense, powerful and explosive. Black cherry, plum, new leather, licorice and mocha are amplified in this dramatic, deeply resonant wine. Gorgeous.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2025)

The assemblage here is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, at 61% of the total, with 21% Cabernet Franc and just 18% Merlot, the only cuvée in the appellation to relegate this variety into third place. This is surely relevant when it comes to the aromatics, which are an absolute delight, immediately reminding me of the 2016 vintage, with finely desiccated currant and blackberry wrapped up with Cabernet Franc tobacco and pencil shavings, perfumed oak, slate, sage, white flowers, sandalwood and crushed chalk. The palate is totally correct, deft and light-footed, with a coherent composition, beautifully cut with toast and matchstick notes, but ultimately this is a wine of dark and driven fruit with a wealth of softening components wrapped around the periphery, set in a medium-bodied substance. A really classy Pessac-Léognan, with a long grip of Cabernet tannins;one for the cellar. Tasted twice. The alcohol on the label is 14%.

94 points, Chris Kissack, Wine Independent (Jun 2025)

Highly aromatic and fragrant nose full of dark berry fruits, dried flowers and chocolate. Well sculpted on the palate, tannins give the frame and strength while the bright red, juicy berry fruit adds lift. There's still some tension to this - it drives in a straight line from start to finish with crushed stones, graphite and cola accenting the finish. Still feels a little shy but I love the styling and precision to the elements. A flash of heat and spice on the finish puts the vintage into the picture and suggests waiting a little longer to enjoy this but it's very nice.

94 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Jan 2025)

Confirming my expectations, the 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is one of the best wines ever produced at this estate. Revealing a complex, vibrant bouquet of cassis, lilac, iris, mulberries, spices and menthol complemented by barely noticeable oak, it's medium to full-bodied and layered with a seamless, pure texture and a fleshy core of fruit perfectly framed by velvety tannins and bright acids. The Cabernet Franc contributes a floral finish, while the Cabernet Sauvignon adds a balanced structure. It should age gracefully.

93 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Mar 2025)

An elegant wine with a blueberry and chocolate aroma and touches of toast. With its ripe tannins and succulent black fruits, the wine has a dense structure. Drink from 2028.

93 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Oct 2025)

Lovely aromatics here, dives straight in to a charming, fruit-filled glass, nothing too concentrated in colour or on the nose, still with plenty of personality. Edge of vanilla bean smoke on the nose, there is a sweetness here, raspberry puree, fragrant lemongrass, violet and cherry pit. Enjoyable, fresh acidities on the finish. Dominant Cabernet, with over 80% between Sauvignon and Franc, and a generous for the vintage 40hl/h yield. 15% whole cluster, aged in a mix of amphora, new barrels and one year old barrels. Tasted twice.

2022 Chateau Beaucastel Hommage a Jacques Perrin (750ml)
Mourvedre from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France

"... yet another outstanding red Beaucastel with the potential to match or even outperform the delicious 2022." - Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous

The 2022 Hommage à Jacques Perrin from Château de Beaucastel is a spectacular and immense wine, representing a great evolution of this cuvée toward increased finesse and precision over the years. It exhibits a complex, elegant bouquet of mulberries, lilac, smoke, spices, wild strawberries and dark cherries. Full-bodied, concentrated and dense, it delivers multidimensional depth at its core, controlled power and structured but velvety tannins with precise, seamless texture, culminating in a long, mineral, penetrating finish. This blend of 60% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache, 10% Syrah and 10% Counoise is a testament to its perfect adaptation to climate change. It is a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts.

98+ points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Sep 2024)

Lastly, the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Hommage A Jacques Perrin is another 2022 that has some resemblance to this estate’s 2009. It just screams Mourvèdre with its wild aromatics of bloody red and blue fruits, herbes de Provence, rare meat, and peppery, spicy nuances. These all carry to a full-bodied yet still balanced, elegant 2022 that stays focused and precise on the palate, with building tannins and a salty finish that makes you salivate. I know there's a tendency to hide these away and think that they're never ready to drink, but they offer incredible pleasure with just short-term cellaring, and this will be no exception.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2024)

A focused, dense, scented and well-structured Chateau de Beaucastel. The nose shows aromas of wild berries, dried thyme, Mediterranean herbs, warm earth and baking spices. It’s medium- to full-bodied with fine tannins. Solid structure at this stage, but all in control. Driven, textural and layered. There is a seductive stream of berries at the center and plenty of verve, with herbs and spices mingling harmoniously. Long finish. Best from 2027.

98 points, James Suckling (Sep 2024)

Notes of cooked blueberries and liquorice on the nose. This has great palate weight and density, it’s so savoury. The tannins are really searching, and the acidity is driving. A big tannic seat, and a lovely sense of vibrancy and freshness to the fruit. This has enormous presence, it's a big, powerful, dense vintage of Hommage that will age for a very long time. Around 60% of the blend comes from old-vine Mourvèdre from the Courrieux vineyard. Grapes are destemmed, fermented in tronconic wooden vats using natural yeasts after a brief cold maceration, with regular punching down.

98 points, Matt Walls, Decanter (Sep 2023)

The stunning 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin comes alive with precise notes of sandalwood, licorice, dried herbs, crushed violets, blackberry jam and wild strawberry. Peppery subtleties add further complexity. Combining mind-boggling intensity with impressive verticality, the full-bodied 2022 is one of the wines of the vintage. Closing with a refined finish that lingers for over two minutes, readers should ideally wait to approach this outstanding Hommage until at least 2032.

The 2017 Larrivet Haut-Brion is a seriously impressive wine. Bold, rich and intense, the 2017 exudes tremendous depth and intensity. Following its bottling, the 2017 is very tannic and closed, but the depth and persistence it showed from bottle are still very much in evidence. The 2017 clearly needs time in bottle to be at its best, but it is still quite good. Readers should expect a wine of real energy and explosive power. Tasted two times.
