2022 Schoffit Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru (750ml)
Riesling from Alsace, France

"The wines are compelling in a rather quiet way, understated but so convincing." - Anne Krebiehl, Vinous

"They are of a consistently high quality and, in my opinion, still far too rarely on the radar of importers, retailers and sommeliers." - Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate

Today is a special re-load/new release

Domaine Schoffit's vineyard stable is loaded with prime sites, but the unquestioned jewel in the crown is the Clos St-Théobald in the Rangen de Thann Grand Cru, inarguably the finest vineyard in Alsace. At 6.5 hectares, the Clos is now a monopole since Bernard Schoffit completed his ambitious reclamation project to unite the entire site under his domaine. The super-steep slopes and volcanic soitls produce one of the world's most distinctive Rieslings, and the 97-point 2022 ranks among the greatest vintages ever made of this wine. Not to be overlooked, the 2022 Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos St-Theobald Grand Cru is another singular standout, this from granitic soils that shine in the wine's stunning combination of density and mineral energy. Finally, the newly released, 94-point 2023 Harth Gewürztraminer showcases Schoffit's great sites around Colmar with fantastic varietal precision, resulting in "a beautifully textured and structured Gewurztraminer with delicate acidity and serious structure."

It bears repeating – these wines belong on the short list of Alsace's finest names along side the Weinbachs, Trimbachs, and Zind-Humbrechts, so if you're a serious Alsace fan or collector of the world's best Rieslings, make room in the cellar. You'll be so glad you did.

94WA 94V 94WE 93WS

The 2022 Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg comes from a very warm and dry vintage but somehow turns out pretty classic, with deep, saline and pure rock aromas intertwined with lemon and green apple aromas. Round and rich on the palate, this is a full-bodied, dense and textural Riesling from granite soils. It is powerful and quite massive at this stage, even a little sweetish (3.3 grams of residual sugar), but on the finish, it's saline and pure and provided with fine tannins. The 2022 is obviously in a valley of its development at the moment and quite edgy; it's not going anywhere and should thus be kept for at least 5 or 6 years. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in Colmar, November 2024.

94+ points, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate (Feb 2025)

The 2022 Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru is grown on pure granite at the top of the Sommerberg, in a little amphitheater in the lieu-dit Sommerberg itself. The wine is surprisingly pale. A gorgeous conifer note is subtle on the nose but easily reaches the sinuses. It is so delicious. The palate is gorgeously strait-laced, absolutely stony, naked, unbuffered, hair-raising and exciting. This is so stony and precise, crystalline, in fact. Acidity is milder than usual, but the stoniness and the arrow-like nature are exactly what I expect. (Bone-Dry)

94 points, Anne Krebiehl, Vinous (Apr 2024)

This dry, crunchy Riesling displays spiced flavors of grapefruit sorbet, white cherry, honeysuckle and tangerine. There's a lot of energy coming from the vivacious acidity, but this is so seamless you don't even notice the intensity at first. It's delicious and harmonious, with a lingering, mineral-tinged finish.

94 points, Aleks Zecevic, Wine Enthusiast (Nov 2024)

A zesty, spicy style, with candied ginger and warm spice details infusing the core of juicy, honeyed apple. A round, generous version, with a broad, creamy feel, yet this still offers good tension. Finishes dry, with a candied almond note. Flinty mineral and lime zest accents stretch out on the well-meshed end. Delicious. Drink now through 2030. 70 cases made, 20 cases imported.

The 2023 Gewurztraminer Lieu-Dit Harth opens with a clear, fresh, spicy and typically aromatic nose with aromas of lychee, rose petal and candied lemon zest intermingled with a spicy/flinty, even peppery and gingery terroir note. Based on low-yielding 50- to 75-year-old vines (massal selections), this is a full-bodied, dense, intense, elegant, finely tannic and spicy Gewürztraminer from the plain of Colmar. This is a beautifully textured and structured Gewurztraminer with delicate acidity and serious structure. The finish is stimulatingly salty, bitter and finely tannic. The eight grams of residual sugar taste anything but sweet and underline the perfect ripeness at harvest time. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in Colmar, November 2024.

94 points, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate (Feb 2025)

The 2023 Gewurztraminer Lieu-Dit Harth Cuvée Caroline is from an old massal selection. It has just a slight note of honeysuckle spice on the nose. The palate plunges into beautiful, juicy, smooth white peach flesh with a touch of nectarine and svelte body. Mandarin peel and lemon freshness define the palate, swallowing the 8 g/L of residual sweetness with much verve. Schoffit says it might be the driest Gewurztraminer they ever made. (Dry)

Holmes Cay Heritage Blend Rum (750ml)
From Barbados
B-21 Top Recommendation

Eric Kaye's Holmes Cay rum range is a bona fide treasure trove for hardcore tiki heads and collectors, as he sources some of the most compelling single cask expressions on the market, with access to seemingly all of the rum world's finest distilleries and stocks.

So, it's no wonder that the Holmes Cay core range features some of the sharpest quality-to-price buys in the category, particularly the 96-point Heritage Blend. It's a marvelous ode to the stylistic variety of Caribbean rum. Part molasses distillate from Venezuela and Foursquare in Barbados, and part rhum agricole (cane juice) from Martinique, the Heritage blend offers clear characteristics of each style in utterly charming fashion. "Complex aromas" and a "mouthwatering palate" culminate in a "notably long" finish that led Wine Enthusiast's Kara Newman to tag it as Best Buy along with her glowing score. At a price that allows you to stock the bar in multiples, it'll be a fabulous addtion to your cocktail game or a surefire winner anytime you need a go-to fix for your rum craving without breaking the bank.

Complex aromas include almond and vanilla, plus a seaside saline breeze. The mouthwatering palate shows coconut and espresso bitterness and finishes notably long—a ribbon of almond, coconut and vanilla fading off into the distance. Best Buy.

96 points, Kara Newman, Wine Enthusiast (Jul 2023)

Golden yellow color. Aromas and flavors of vanilla cream, dried pineapple blossoms, baked orange and clove, and tropical flowers and bananas with a silky, bone-dry light-to-medium body and a long finish with accents of pineapple blossom and toasted coconut, vanilla, elderflower, and baking spice, baked red apple and pepper, and banana and jackfruit candies. Light and elegant yet exploding with fruity and floral aromas and flavors; a nice, casual sipper, or feature in simple cocktails that highlight the base spirit.

2024 Jean-Marc Burgaud Morgon La Roche (750ml)
Gamay from Morgon, Beaujolais, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"In my mind, and according to my palate for that matter, Jean-Marc Burgaud is the don of Morgon. His wines achieve the highest levels and have an unerring propensity to repay cellaring." - Neal Martin, Vinous

Earlier this year we solidified a domaine-direct relationship with a true Beaujolais icon, and now the "first fruits" of this new relationship have just landed in stock. Dubbed "a winemaker at the peak of his powers" by William Kelley, Jean-Marc Burgaud is unquestionably among the elite in Beaujolais, and his wines are roundly coveted by fans and collectors, yet they remain some of the sharpest QPR buys in all of France.

Over the years, Jean-Marc has undergone quite the transformation in his winemaking technique, resulting in the benchmark expressions we know and love today. He's an ardent proponent of Morgon's exceptional individual terroirs, and his classic, semi-carbonic winemaking aims to express each parcel to its fullest. The highlight of the range, Burgaud's Cote du Py James is his perennial magnum opus, sourced from a parcel at the very top of the appellation's most iconic lieu-dit. "The 2022 Morgon Côte du Py James, succulent and complex, is one of the best showings for the vintage for this famous lieu-dit," notes Wine Advocate. Not as well-known but every bit as compelling is the 2022 Côte du Py Javernieres, a JS95 insider's favorite that isn't often seen in the U.S. market. We're also thrilled to present a trio of Burgaud's newly released 2024s, each one a superb expression of its Morgon terroir and a benchmark example of one the region's greatest winemaking talents.

We'll say it again – we couldn't be more thrilled with this new partnership because our direct access to Jean-Marc's cellars brings the benchmark gems to us at jaw-dropping pricing that you won't see anywhere else.

The 2024 Morgon La Roche (formerly Corcelette) has a perfumed rose petal-tinged bouquet with wonderful transparency. The palate is very balanced—again, quite linear in style. It does not have the depth of the 2022 or 2023 on the finish but it is clean and poised. Let's see what it offers in 12 months' time.

2018 Chateau Margaux (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaux, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Whether its what James Suckling describes as the "wonderful combination of refinement and power" in Chateau Margaux or the complexity and depth of Chateau Mouton Rothschild that Jeb Dunnuck declares "quintessential Pauillac," these top scoring vintages from two iconic First Growth estates are guaranteed not to disappoint, a terrific opportunity to fill in the cellar with 100 pt. gems or treat yourself to the one of a kind pleasures that only First Growth Bordeaux can deliver in every vintage at best on the market pricing.

A seductive Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend, Chateau Margaux' 82-hectare vineyard boasts some vines over 80 years of age, producing exceptional quality fruit which undergoes rigorous selection with typically only a third or less of production making the cut for the Grand Vin and typically aged for 18 to 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels made at their onsite cooperage. A top scoring selection ranging from the stunning 100 pt. 2009 Margaux just entering its window of drinkability to the alluring 100 pt. 2020 Margaux declared "a Margaux for the ages" by Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson, every vintage shares the Grand Vin's signature refinement and meticulous balance, offering floral aromatics and lush dark fruit with dense silky tannins that promise decades of enjoyment and all "elegant and utterly compelling" in the words of the Wine Advocate's William Kelley. A sumptuous and rich Cabernet Sauvignon blend known for its unique artwork labels that change with each vintage, Chateau Mouton Rothschild shares Margaux's "insane ability to age" according to Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson, its 83 hectare vineyard at Pauillac's highest elevation planted to 81% Cabernet Sauvignon averaging 50 years of age with some vines over 130 years with only 50% of the harvest making the final cut for the Grand Vin and always aged in 100% new French oak typically for 19 to 22 months. Described as a "multi-dimensional First Growth with a very persistent finish" by Vinous critic Neal Martin, the dazzling 100 pt. 2009 Chateau Mouton Rothschild is ready to enjoy after over a decade of pristine cellaring while the stunning 100 pt. 2010 Mouton is "a battleship of a wine" according to the Wine Spectator's James Molesworth and not far behind, every vintage revealing the estate's signature seductive texture, velvety tannins and incredible depth and ranging to the "ethereal" 100 pt 2020 Mouton Rothschild that James Suckling declares "hard to not drink now," highlighting its approachability while acknowledging the potential for decades of evolution.

Representing the upper echelon in the Bordeaux hierarchy, some of these remarkable First Growths boast over a decade of cellaring and others require patient cellaring before pulling the cork, but all are guaranteed to "blow you away any time" over the next several decades in the words of Jeb Dunnuck, delivered in perfect provenance at exceptional value pricing.

100WA 100JD 100JS 100WI 98V 98WS 98WE 98D

The 2018 Château Margaux is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, representing 36% of the crop this year. The wine has a pH of 3.8 and 14% alcohol. Deep purple-black in color, it slowly unfurls to reveal tantalizing scents of crème de cassis, wild blueberries and Black Forest cake with hints of redcurrant jelly, rose oil, dark chocolate and cedar chest plus a touch of star anise. The medium to full-bodied palate bursts with opulent black fruit, fragrant earth and floral layers, supported by a rock-solid structure of exquisitely ripe, finely grained tannins and seamless backbone of freshness, finishing with fantastic length. This is classic Margaux at its most seductive, although it is, rather amazingly, approachable and absolutely delicious right now. But, to enjoy its full glory, you will want to cellar it for at least 6-8 years and then watch it metamorphize over the next 40+ years.

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Adovcate (Mar 2021)

Based on 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% each of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2018 Château Margaux is a magical, incredibly sexy expression of this Château that sports a dense purple color as well as a thrilling bouquet of blueberries, cassis, acacia flowers, scorched earth, sandalwood, and violets. Incredibly concentrated and full-bodied on the palate, it nevertheless has an almost Burgundian sense of finesse and elegance, with an ethereal texture, silky yet massive amounts of tannins, notable freshness, and brilliant length. The alcohol hit a whopping 14%, which is high by this estate's standards, but everything is flawlessly integrated, the balance is perfect, and I certainly can't find anything that could be better. This 2018 is going to be relatively drinkable at an early age (do your best to hide bottles for 7-8 years) yet last for 75+.

100 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

So much ash, tobacco and earth to the bright blackberry and currant aromas. Flowers too. Fresh. Full-bodied with seamless tannins that spread across your palate and caress every square centimeter. It’s shows loads of ripe-berry, cherry, currant and chocolate character, as well as walnut and light cedar. Then the finish goes on for minutes. Extremely refined and elegant, despite the structure. 90% cabernet sauvignon, 4% cabernet franc, 4% merlot and 2% petit verdot. A joy to taste, but drink after 2025.

100 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Chateau Margaux is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, with the first wine representing 37% of the harvest. Deep purple-black colored, it needs considerable coaxing to release scents of plum preserves, blueberry compote, and ripe blackcurrants, leading to nuances of violets, cedar chest, pencil shavings, wood smoke, and wet slate with a waft of black truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is simply electric, with a firework display of mineral earth and black fruits and super-fine, firm, tannins, plus incredible tension, finishing with epic length and depth. "I'm surprised by the body," commented winemaker Philippe Bascaules as we tasted together. "During primeurs, the 2019 was full of charm. Now it is more concentrated, more powerful." Indeed.

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Apr 2022)

The 2018 Margaux is an infant. Today, the tannins are unusually searing, but then again, the 2018 is a wine in which all the elements are dialed up to the maximum. Time in the glass releases the fruit, revealing a luxurious, opulent Château Margaux built for the cellar. Cedar, tobacco, dried flowers and mint develop with a bit of coaxing. Rich, deep and utterly beguiling, the 2018 is a dramatic wine that will thrill readers lucky enough to own it.

98+ points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

This struts along with supreme confidence, as a cashmere-textured structure effortlessly carries a prodigious set of warmed cassis, plum reduction and blackberry compote flavors, pulling in alder, bergamot, black and red tea and iron notes. Still manages to come across as restrained in the end. A beautiful wine. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2028 through 2040. 10,833 cases made.

98 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2021)

While this wine reflects the richness and density of the vintage, it also shows all the elegance of which a great Margaux is capable. The wine is powerful and beautifully structured, both ripe and restrained. It will age magnificently. Start to think about drinking from 2028.

98 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2021)

This is extremely powerful, with high tannin levels that are beautifully velvety and a real presence that is going to need a good 15 years before it softens. There are layers and layers of subtlety here, charcoal, earth, fresh acidity - a ton of serious character that needs time to inch towards opening. Grips on like a limpet - this needs a good half an hour in the glass to even begin to open, but as it does so you see clearly the finesse and precision of the fruit construction. Exceptionally good. 3.64pH, 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend, 36% of the harvest in the first wine. Bottled mid-September.

2022 Mazzei Siepi (750ml)
Sangiovese from Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

An exceptional Super Tuscan combining the power and roundness of Merlot with Sangiovese's structure and acidity, Mazzei's Siepi is a perennial collectible all-star that has seen a fanatical following grow up around the previous several vintages.

Just eight miles from Siena in the historic village of Fonterutoli, 24 generations of the Mazzei family have been owners of the Fonterutoli Castle in Chianti Classico since 1435, boasting a rich legacy of crafting exceptional wines as one of the oldest winemaking families in Italy and the world. Known for being the first winery to plant Merlot in the region over three decades ago, Mazzei's combination of forward vision and steadfast traditionalism have garnered a consistent track record of excellence that few of their contemporaries can match, with the flagship Siepi as the cornerstone.

The four vintages on offer today all showcase the recent trajectory of this magnificent Super Tuscan best-seller, starting with the "classy, elegant and super-polished" 2020 in magnum format. It's no surprise that the epic 2021 vintage produced "certainly one of the best editions of Siepi we've seen so far" per Wine Advocate's Monica Larner, while the double 97-point 2022 is an equally prodigious follow-up to its monumental predecessors in 2019 and 2021, as well as a worthy effort for the wine's 30th anniversary bottling. Finally, the 2023 has already racked up a pair of 97 points scores, with more surely to come. "Classy stuff," it's a lovely representation of the balance of the vintage and my indeed provide more immediate accessibility while you wait for the long-haul vintages to come to maturity.

Whether you're building a Siepi vertical or just building a collection of Tuscany's greatest modern wines, the four vintages on offer today will add some serious depth and gravitas to any cellar.

97JS 97JA 96WA 96V 95D

The aromas of dark berries, violets and perfume are enchanting. The palate is medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that are polished and so elegant and they run the length of the wine. They are rather endless. Very classy and balanced. A merlot and sangiovese blend. Give this a year or two, but it’s already a joy to drink. Drink or hold.

97 points, James Suckling (Sep 2024)

Deep ruby in colour, this is concentrated compared to many in Tuscany, love the super savoury feel, tongue-scraping architecture, with so much freshly cut herb edging and heavy liqourice root and gunsmoke alongside raspberry and cassis fruit. Brilliant, up there with the very best of the Bordeaux-Tuscan wines, where the grapes and the region truly each play their part in creating the personality of the wine. The vineyards for Siepi are in Castellina in Chianti, harvest September 5 to 17, 70% new oak for ageing, large oak casks for the Sangiovese, then three months in concrete tanks before release. Tasted with the September Releases and again at the estate.

97 points, Jane Anson (Aug 2024)

The Mazzei 2022 Siepi marks this wine's 30th anniversary. I have a special connection to this wine, as I was present when some of the final blending options (with fruit from various parcels within the greater Siepi vineyard) were being decided. My personal preference was for the interpretation that showed the brightest fruit and the most energy. Those qualities are transferred over to this bottle, and I do agree that this celebratory vintage offers an excellent opportunity to tweak the winemaking of this historic blend of Sangiovese and Merlot. This warm vintage offers plenty of primary fruit with bold cherry as the protagonist. Softer tones of blue flower and grilled rosemary appear at the back. However, the oak spice and cinnamon need time to integrate. The results put the 2022 vintage on par with classic years such as 2021 and 2019.

96 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jul 2024)

The 2022 Siepi is a supremely elegant, polished wine. Even so, it has shut down significantly since I tasted it just prior to bottling, likely a reflection of the decision to use a selection of more vibrant Sangioveses for the blend in this vintage. Dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, menthol and licorice build nicely with a bit of coaxing. Over the last few years, the Mazzei family has gradually given their wines a touch more focus and energy, qualities that come through loud and clear here.

96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2025)

Siepi, a 50/50 blend of Merlot and Sangiovese, is one of the rare wines which has increased the percentage of new oak, and today it sits at almost 100%. 2022 was a hot and dry year and it seems to have emphasised the Merlot power more than the Sangiovese finesse: wild forest berries, sous bois and spicy plum lead the way, with a saline touch. Grippy and spicy, round and ripe, it's a bit angular at the moment, with a drying finish, but once that oak has settled down it should show us what it's made of.

2024 Jean-Marc Burgaud Morgon Chollet (750ml)
Gamay from Morgon, Beaujolais, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

The 2024 Morgon Grands Cras has a bright bouquet, a little more fruité than the Les Charmes. The palate is medium-bodied and understated in style, with refined tannins and a cohesive, slightly tertiary finish. Promising.

2021 Dominio del Bendito Las Sabias (750ml)
Tempranillo from Toro, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation

"Terrin is a producer who nurtures the vine, seeking a concentrated and powerful style of the gravelly terroir." - Joaquin Hidalgo, Vinous

Spain's Toro region is one of the country's most dynamic, though it has long existed in the shadows of the more renowned Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. But winemakers like Dominio del Bendito's Antony Terrin are making serious waves by harnessing the potential of the extremely stony soils, old vines, and trademark powerful Toro style, resulting in serious wines of substance and depth that are built for the cellar.

The 2021s are heavy hitters with serious press from Wine Advocate's Luis Gutiérrez, led by the 95-point, aptly named Titan del Bendito. Made from old, ungrafted plots, some dating to the 19th century, it "showcases the ripe and powerful style of the zone and the winery coupled with good freshness from a very complete and balanced year." Terrin intends this wine to be an ode to the great sophistication and age-worthiness of traditional Toro wines. Stylistically different, the 94-point Las Sabias is "full-bodied but balanced, with ripe fruit and tannins and integrated oak." From 45- to 80-year-old bush vines of Tinto del Toro, the Las Sabias is crafted to showcase a certain poise and freshness that Terrin believes is possible even in this warm-climate region.

Of course, there will always be ample space for Rioja and Ribero in the cellars of Spanish wine collectors, but with entries like these from Dominio del Bendito, the Toro region should be on everyone's radar.

2021 was a very good vintage for Dominio del Bendito, and the 2021 Las Sabias shows the freshness of the year with the ripe, concentrated, powerful house style. You don't really feel the 16.5% alcohol in this wine, and it comes through as full-bodied but balanced, with ripe fruit and tannins and integrated oak after spending 16 months in French oak barrels. It is finer-boned than other years. 16,190 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.

2022 Giovanni Rosso Etna Rosso (750ml)
Nerello Mascalese from Etna, Sicily, Italy

"The writing is on the wall ... Mount Etna has established itself as one of the most essential viticultural areas in the world." - Eric Guido, Vinous

What was once an afterthought (or even out of thought) of the Italian wine scene, Sicily, and Mount Etna in particular, are now seeing a sky-rocketing level of attention from critics and consumers alike. Homegrown names like Terre Nere (a long-time B-21 favorite) and Pietradolce, as well as cult darlings like Arianna Occhipinti, have put the region on the map, and now we're seeing exceptionally talented winemakers from the mainland set up shop and put their talents to work on the singular varietals and vineyards that dot this volcanic landscape.

Giovanni Rosso is the source of perennially acclaimed Barolos from the estate's plots in famed sites such as Cerretto and Vignarionda, and now under fourth-generation winemaker Davide Rosso, the estate has acquired parcels and expanded into Mount Etna with exceptional results. This pair of gems exemplifies both Rosso's pure winemaking philosophy and pure volcanic terroir. The 2022 Rosso has notched 95 points from James Suckling for its "perfumed and graceful" style, while the 94-point 2024 Bianco is "fragrant, [with] a ton of personality ... A delicious, moreish wine," according to Jane Anson.

There's no shortage of new discoveries and sleeper stars waiting for you in Sicily, but this pair from Giovanni Rosso should be near the top of your list if you want to get a crystal clear introduction to this amazing, rising-star category.

95JS 93WA 93JA

Perfumed and graceful, showing an intense floral bouquet of violets, roses and jasmine as well as blood oranges and strawberries with whiffs of marzipan and stony minerality. The attack is smooth with a lot of fruit sweetness, full body, vibrant flavors and elegant tannins. Crunchy in the end, this has a long, juicy finish with citrus notes.

95 points, Aldo Fiordelli, James Suckling (Jun 2025)

The Giovanni Rosso 2022 Etna Rosso Contrade Nuove has a little more textural heft with dark fruit aromas due to the warm summer growing conditions on the volcano. This vintage was hot but cooled down by rain at the right times. Vintner Davide Rosso says that Nerello Mascalese tends to go into reduction and can produce green tannins. His solution is to allow more oxygen in winemaking with the use, for example, of amphorae, which tend to be more porous. Conical oak vats and stainless steel are also used. This pretty wine offers bright fruit, cherry and crushed roses.

93 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Apr 2025)

Always look forward to tasting this wine, with its jewel ruby colour, and fresh fragrant aromatics, crunchy cranberry and red cherry fruit, soft tobacco, a touch of campfire smoke, integrated tannins, traces of bitter orange rind on the finish. Juicy and easy to drink, fine tannins that are ready to go.

2019 Rauzan-Segla (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Described by Jeb Dunnuck as an estate "firing on all cylinders," there's no doubt that Super Second Chateau Rauzan-Segla ranks at the top of the Margaux appellation, these high scoring Left Bank blends from outstanding recent vintages offering First Growth depth and cellar worthy complexity at a fraction of the price.

Located a short walk from the village of Margaux, Chateau Rauzan-Segla has been owned by the Wertheimer family of the fashion house Chanel since 1984, the estate undergoing a "no expense spared" restoration and revitalization that has fueled its steady rise in quality over the past two decades. Crafted by former Krug and Cheval des Andes winemaker Nicolas Audebert, the Grand Vin was sourced from the estate's 70 hectares of organically farmed vineyards throughout the appellation with some parcels close to First Growth Chateau Margaux and aged in mostly new French oak for 18 months.

Living up to the Chateau's rising star reputation as "an estate that can do no wrong" according to Jeb Dunnuck, these lush Chateau Rauzan-Segla blends boast refined, polished tannins that promise longevity, this offer a perfect opportunity for Bordeaux fans to stock the cellar with top scoring values rivalling its First Growth peers at a best on the market price.

Composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35.5% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, and 0.5% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Rauzan-Segla is deep garnet-purple colored. It is a little closed and broody to begin, soon fanning out to offer up notes of kirsch, black cherry preserves, and warm cassis, plus touches of smoked meats, wild blueberries, violets, and cedar chest, along with a hint of charcoal. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is very tightly wound with loads of earthy accents among the densely laden fruit and fine-grained tannins, finishing long and savory.

98 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Apr 2022)

The Grand Vin 2019 Château Rauzan-Ségla is beautiful, and it seems this estate can do no wrong since 2015. A more elegant, ethereal, complex Margaux, it has a perfumed and complex style in its red, blue, and black fruits as well as notes of white flowers, chalky minerality, and exotic spices. Haute couture at its finest and seamless, medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced, and just stunning any way you look at it, it already offers pleasure today yet will easily have 30 years of prime drinking.

97 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Rauzan-Ségla is a wine that I did not taste en primeur. Picked from September 12 to October 9 and matured in 60% new oak, it has a gorgeous, seductive bouquet of pure blackberry, bilberry, crushed iris petals and just a hint of licorice. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and good cohesion and depth. The oak is seamlessly integrated on the finish, which lingers like a temptress. Two samples tasted, the second demonstrating a little more salinity on the aftertaste. This will be irresistible.

97 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Rauzan-Ségla has turned out brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with fragrant aromas of cassis, blackberries, violets, rose petals and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and concentrated, it's deep and layered, with beautifully refined tannins, lively acids and a long, perfumed finish. This is a sensual, elegant Rauzan-Ségla from Nicolas Audebert and his team.

96 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

Subtle and complex aromas of sweet berries, rose stems and lavender with some sandalwood. Medium-to full-bodied with beautiful depth of fruit, creamy tannins and lots of chocolate and berry character. Yet, it’s tight at the end, showing beautiful depth and length. So structured. Try after 2027.

Bodegas Muga's status as an all-time Rioja reference-point is reaffirmed with this sterling trio of releases at razor-sharp pricing, highlighted by the newly arrived 2021 Torre Muga.

"...one of the finest vintages for Torre Muga, along with 2016 and 2010." - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

The 2021 Rioja vintage is already garnering rave reviews in the press, and the JD98 Torre Muga reflects that praise, "a gorgeous wine from a gorgeous vintage that’s worth the price." Concentrated and robust yet also polished and refined, the 2021 expresses the character of its old-vine plots in Villalba de Rioja, Brinas, and Labastida. A host of impressive reviews from James Suckling, Vinous, and Wine Advocate further confirm the 2021 Torre Muga as a special achievement, worthy of the wine's loft reputation among collectors.

The Selección Especial Reserva is always a crowd and collectible favorite in the range and always priced well for a broad audience yet offering the kind of cellar-worthy appeal that serious collectors are looking for. The 2020 rendtion ramps up the collectible appeal thanks to a particular feature of the vintage itself – no Prado Enea was made in 2020, so all the fruit and juice that would normally comprise that flagship icon has instead gone into the Selección Especial. So, it's no surprise that the 2020 picks up right where the 2019 leaves off, led by Jeb Dunnuck's 95-point review that highlights its "medium to full-bodied richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, and silky tannins," which makes it "already hard to resist."

Finally, the 2021 Reserva Rioja continues to be one of the sharpest values in Spanish wine, "a textbook example of [Muga's] style in a very good year, with power, concentration and clout, elegance and freshness" perGutiérrez' 94-point review in Wine Advocate. It's a perfect candidate to stack by the case, since it will not only cruise for several years in the cellar, but it will quench your thirst for Muga excellence anytime over the next decade while the you wait for the big boys to reach their prime drinking windows. For fans of Spanish wine and of Rioja in particular, this is a spectacular opportunity to load up on proven performers that will put many smiles on your face for countless years to come, at market-best pricing.

The 2019 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is their more traditional Rioja, a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, mostly from Rioja Alta (Sajazarra, Cellorigo and Fonzaleche) at 550 to 700 meters in altitude, but the Garnacha is from different plots in the zone of Tudelilla at a high altitude. They didn't produce Prado Enea in 2017 or 2018, so this is the follow-up of the superb 2016. The bunches were harvested into 200-kilogram boxes, destemmed, put through optical sorting and fermented in small oak casks with indigenous yeasts. The élevage in barrel was extended to 36 months. The nose is phenomenal, keeping the essence of Muga with a touch of Garnacha perfume; it's still young and undeveloped for its age, not yet tertiary. The wine is full-bodied but fine-boned and has 14.7% alcohol, a pH of 3.46 and 5.81 grams per liter acidity. Still young, the wine has power and elegance and very good aging potential. 119,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2023. The next vintages will be 2021 and 2022, and after that perhaps 2025, but certainly no 2023 or 2024 wine.

The 2023 Riesling Lieu-Dit Harth Vieilles Vignes, known as Tradition in certain export markets, comes from the plain in Colmar from a site with almost no clay but sand, pebbles and gravel. Yields have to be kept low due to the dryness of Colmar and the well-draining soils. The 2023 vintage is based on yields below 20 hectoliters per hectare due to frost, whereas the goal is always 50 hectoliters per hectare. Ripe and aromatic on the spicy and fruity nose, this is a medium to full-bodied, round, fruity and refreshing Riesling with elegant acidity and a savory as well as saline, still young and tight finish that delivers citrus flavors and fine tannins. 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in Colmar, November 2024.

Featured in a range of formats and vintages cellared in perfect conditions, Sauternes fans and those looking to explore them won't need an excuse or special occasion to enjoy this thrilling, top scoring selection from Chateau Suduiraut, boasting fresh, opulent honeyed fruit perfectly balanced by savory acidity, offering a not to be missed opportunity for both collectors and newbies to stock up on at bargain pricing and enjoy over the next decades.

Set among exquisite gardens designed by the creator of the Sun King's grounds at the Palace of Versailles, the majestic two-story turret-flanked Chateau Suduiraut is one of Bordeaux's most beautiful estates, located just to the north of Chateau d'Yquem with 92 hectares of sloping organically farmed vineyards planted with mostly Semillon vines averaging 30 years of age. After harvesting the botrytized grapes over multiple passes with strict selection employed in the vineyard, longtime technical director Pierre Montegut vinified the Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes in French oak, blending mostly Semillon with small amounts of Sauvignon Blanc, then aged it on the lees in 50% new French oak barrels for 18-24 months, yielding its signature perfumed aromas with rich and decadent spiced fruit, balanced with energetic acidity and epic length. Describing it as "a mood altering wine," the 95 pt. 2004 Suduiraut boasts "a range of honeyed flavors that never seems to stop" according to Wine and Spirits, while the Wine Advocate's Robert Parker Jr. declares the 95 pt. 2006 Suduiraut "unctuously textured, with superb, full-bodied richness, good underlying acidity, and a stunning finish." Boasting "a beautiful razor-sharp line of acidity that effortlessly slices through all that pure botrytised fruit," Neal Martin of Vinous calls the 98 pt. 2009 Suduiraut a "benchmark Suduiraut" and declares the 96 pt. 2010 Chateau Suduiraut "simply magnificent" and "a candidate for best Sauternes of the vintage." Vinous critic Antonio Galloni declares the "fabulous" 97 pt. 2016 Suduiraut "such a gorgeous wine," delivering a remarkable combination of flavor and intensity yet remaining "gracious and classy," while the Wine Enthusiast's Roger Voss calls it "a great wine with a long-term future."

Whether selecting a few favorites or mixing a case, these magical vintages of Chateau Suduiraut are crafted to reveal their layered complexity over the next decades, their rich palate deftly balanced by an energizing lift of acidity, guaranteeing a pleasurable evolution for years to come. Christian Seely, AXA's charismatic managing director behind Chateau Suduiraut, describes tasting these elegantly crafted Sauternes well: "It is above all a supremely pleasurable wine, and one that needs no excuse, context or pairing: You can just open it for the sheer pleasure of the thing." Never more true at these exceptional bargain prices.

The 2016 Suduiraut is fabulous. Crème brûlée, passion fruit, tangerine peel and exotic floral notes all race out of the glass. I marvel at how Suduiraut can deliver so much flavor intensity and yet remain so gracious and classy. The 140 grams of residual sugar are very well integrated. This is such a gorgeous wine.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Suduiraut has 145 g/l of residual sugar. Pale lemon-gold in color, it flies out of the glass with vivacious, youthful scents of lemon tart, lime cordial, and orange blossom, plus suggestions of nutmeg, marzipan, and creme brulee. The rich, seductive, full-bodied palate really packs a powerful wallop of fruit, supported by a seamless line of freshness and a decadently oily texture, finishing long and perfumed.

97 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Dec 2022)

The pale lemon-gold colored 2016 Suduiraut features vibrant lime blossom, candied peel, white peaches, guava and exotic spice notes on the nose with nuances of marzipan and crème brûlée. Rich, layered and powerful in the mouth, it has a gorgeous creamy texture, lovely vibrancy and a long, spicy finish.

95+ points, Wine Advocate (Mar 2019)

As to the Sauternes, the 2016 Château Suduiraut boasts a medium gold color and a fresh, clean, beautifully perfumed bouquet of orange blossom, honeyed pineapple, and flowers, with notable botrytis, which can be lacking in a number of Sauternes in 2016. With moderate acidity, a fleshy, full-bodied texture, and loads of fruits, it’s geared more toward drinking over the coming 10-15 years than any over-the-top cellaring.

A very concentrated Sauternes with a cornucopia of dried papaya, pineapple and mango, plus candied orange and tropical flowers that bowl you over. 5 Sentidos Pechuga de Mole Poblano Mezcal Batch #PMPDEL 08-25 (750ml)
From Oaxaca, Mexico

"Delfino is absolutely nailing the style, and it's no wonder this expression has developed such an avid legion of fans." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

If you're a mezcal fan or collector and you haven't jumped on board with 5 Sentidos yet, you're missing out on some of the most compelling, artfully crafted offerings in the category. The brainchild of American Jason Cox, the project began as a collection of house mezcals selected for his upstart Oaxaca restaurant El Destilado. This transplant with an insatiable thirst for artisan agave spirits spent countless hours and miles traversing Oaxaca and its surrounding environs, scouting out the best artisan mezcal producers no one had yet heard of. We're talking true family operations that run on sweat and calloused hands and that produce stunningly complex, singular expressions you won't find anywhere else.

Today, the 5 Sentidos range offers a dizzying array of options and styles, but an undisputed fan-favorite is the Pechuga de Mole Poblano from Defino Tobón Mejia, a show-stopping representation of the style. Defino ferments the agave cupreata (aka Papalote) with a freshly slaughtered chicken from his back yard, dousing it in homemade mole poblano in the process. "A veritable bomb of savory, meaty goodness," the Pechuga de Mole is a wild ride of complexity and intrigue.

If you're already familiar with 5 Sentidos, you'll no doubt recall that this item has been out of stock for while, and it's hard to say when more will be available after this parcel is gone, so you'll definitely want to add this gem to your shelf while you can, and if you haven't discovered them yet, this is the perfect introduction to the top-tier craftsmanship that goes into all of Jason Cox's selections.

95AK

The hottest sub-category of agave distillate is undoubtedly Pechuga, and this one from Delfino Tobon Meija is a stunner. Made from Agave cupreata, known as Papalote around Puebla and northern Oaxaca, this pechuga is distilled with a freshly slaughtered chicken from Delfino’s back yard doused in mole poblano suspended in the boiling pot. As you’d expect, this Pechuga is a veritable bomb of savory, meaty goodness right out of the gate. The nose is all roasted sweet peppers and poblanos at first (of course), with the tell-tale red mole complexity, coffee bean, and roasted meat character offering the hardcore Pechuga fan everything they’re looking for. But it’s not all barbecue pit. Time and air bring out everything from luxurious dark toffee to melon, eventually showing unexpected subtleties like sweet grass, chamomile and petrol. The palate is pretty hot at first, so definitely give it patience, after which the initially viscous texture settles out to something more balanced, still mouth-coating but also, dare I say, elegant. Classic Papalote in its rich yet textured feel. The flavor profile starts off super intense and stays that way, so buckle up. Sweet and pickled peppers at first, with bitter cacao nibs, spicy rather than sweet agave, and more of that red mole in the form of canela stick, dried anchos, and even touches of tropical fruit. The finish is a lengthy amalgam of petrol, fine minerality, and smoky game on a tightrope dance of weight and energy. Delfino is absolutely nailing the style, and it’s no wonder this expression has developed such an avid legion of fans.

"Their specialty is working with the Godello grape, which may well be Spain’s finest indigenous white grape ... Avancia is certainly the top producer of this intriguing and delicious dry white." - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

Godello is the emblematic white grape of Spain, and the Valdeorras D.O. is emblematic of Godello. Jorge Ordoñez' Bodegas Avancia has been a standard bearer for Godello for years, and their Old Vine bottling is a consistent benchmark vintage after vintage. Sourced from head-trained, dry-farmed vines approaching 40 years of age on slate and quartz soils, resulting in a wine of serious depth and age-worthy concentration. The 2024 carries on this cuvée's sterling track record with a 94-point review from Vinous for its "pure, direct expression" of Godello. "Intense, with good freshness and weight," it's built to be a lasting rendition that will set the bar for Spanish whites in its price tier.

94V 93JS

The 2024 Godello from Valdeorras spent six months on lees in French oak puncheons and demi-muids. It begins with acacia, linden blossom and pear, showing pure, direct expression. Intense, with good freshness and weight, this has a lightly malic edge that extends the finish. Recently bottled, the 2024 will benefit from further integration.

94 points, Joaquín Hidalgo, Vinous (Sep 2025)

Minerally and stony on the nose, with crushed rocks and underripe stone fruit. The palate is ample yet sharp, showing precision and fine balance between texture and acidity. Austere but expressive. Drink now.

2016 Larrivet Haut Brion Rouge (750ml)
Merlot from Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France

"Confirming my expectations, the 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is one of the best wines ever produced at this estate." - Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate

As part of the general trend of overperforming Pessac estates in the past decade, Larrivet Haut-Brion's stock is steadily rising among the critical press and Bordeaux enthusiasts alike. Thanks to the guiding hand of famed enologist Michel Rolland, the style of the estate's wines has taken on an unprecedented level of class and polish culminating in the spectacular 2022 vintage. Following the overall character of the vintage, this triple 95-point, sub-$50 standout is "a dramatic, deeply resonant wine" with loads of structural stuffing to go the distance in the cellar.

To further emphasize the estate's marvelous recent trajectory, we also have four back-vintage gems on offer that showcase how well Larrivet performs year in and year out. The 2016 is now in its prime drinking window where it will remain for years, while the 95-point 2019 shows "a rich, broad, mouth-filling, spicy, complex and full-bodied style that has loads to love" per Jeb Dunnuck. Keen-eyed collectors also won't sleep on the AG95 rendition from the "off-vintage" of 2017. "Bold, rich and intense, the 2017 exudes tremendous depth and intensity ... Readers should expect a wine of real energy and explosive power," declares Galloni.

All in all, we love featuring Pessac, because the appellation is rife with stupendous collectible values, and while collectors often focus on building verticals of Bordeaux's most hallowed names, this line-up proves that you can get tremendous mileage out of doing the same with under-the-radar gems like Larrivet.

94JS 94D 93JD 92WA 92V

Very attractive, earthy aromas with an array of herbal and leafy notes, as well as a dark-berry thread and earthy complexity. The palate has great depth and drive with a bright array of juicy red and darker berries. Plush, ripe tannins. Try from 2022.

94 points, James Suckling (Jan 2019)

What a brilliant vintage this is - just so complete. Honestly at this level, where prices don't change that dramatically between vintages, you should go for the 2016 if you have the option. It's on a different level in terms of depth and structure, and has opened up further from my tasting two years ago. You can drink it now, although will probably improve again over the next few years. Excellent Pessac-Léognan character, polish and balance but also plenty of black fruits and great chocolate; hard to argue with.

94 points, Jane Anson, Decanter (Apr 2020)

Also terrific, the 2016 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion is in the same league as the 2015 and offers a perfectly balanced, medium to full-bodied style as well as complex notes of red and black fruits, smoke tobacco, incense, and cedar. It picks up a Graves-induced cold fireplace note as it sits in the glass, and again, is a beautifully balanced, layered 2016 that has loads of character. Give bottles a few years and enjoy over the following 15+.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2019)

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Larrivet Haut-Brion reveals a beguiling, earthy/truffle-laced nose with notions of crushed rocks, tilled soil, fungi and mossy bark over a core of warm cassis and blackberry compote. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is elegantly crafted with soft, fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing with a quiet intensity of savory nuances.

92 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2019)

The 2016 Larrivet Haut-Brion is one of the sleepers of the vintage. Iron, cedar, blood orange, chalk and smoke give the 2016 an incredibly expressive upper register of aromatic depth to match its distinctly feral personality. What a gorgeous wine this is. The 2016 spent 16-18 months in barrel, 33% new. Tasted two times.

2017 Chateau Meyney (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Saint-Estephe, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

We've all seen the general rise in quality in Bordeaux over the past two decades, and now even the Cru Bourgeois (or Cru Classé) estates are gaining some serious recognition while still remaining top-tier QPR buys that you can stash away in the cellar. At the head of that pack is St-Éstephe's Château Meyney, always a savvy choice to overdeliver, and we've got a must-see mini-vertical on offer today,

Since 2013 under the consulting direction of Château Angélus' Hubert de Bouard, Meyney is on a real tear, with mounting critical accolades that are far outpacing the estate's cru bourgeois classification. Each of the vintages below is a gem, but the undisputed highlights are the benchmark 2020 and 2022. "The 2020 Meyney turned out beautifully. Fresh, vibrant and full of character, the 2020 impresses with its energy and delineation," notes Antonio Galloni. The warm, dry 2022 vintage produced a profound, long-haul thoroughbred that offers extreme bang for your collectible buck, with widespread acclaim for all corners of the professional press. "A serious overachiever" according to Galloni, "this appears to be the best Meyney produced for quite some time, and it's well worth seeking out," notes Wine Advocate's William Kelley.

In short, these acclaimed gems are some of the smartest bets for your cellar that you'll find, with tons of upside potential and case-buy pricing.

92JD 92V 92JS 92WI 91D 90WA 90WS

A terrific effort, the 2017 Meyney is a concentrated, nicely structured wine in the vintage that’s going to have a broad drink window. Lots of black cherry, chocolate, cedarwood, and leafy tobacco notes define the bouquet, followed by a medium-bodied red with a solid spine of acidity, supple tannins, and a great finish. It’s a classic, beautifully done Saint-Estèphe to enjoy over the coming 15 years or so.

92 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Jun 2020)

The 2017 Meyney is building upon its promising showing after bottling. It has a polished, well-defined bouquet of blackberry, cedar, mint and damp clay/potter's wheel, perhaps demonstrating even more precision than a few months ago. The palate displays very fine tannins and good grip on the clove-tinged finish. A judiciously spiced and impressively proportioned Saint-Estèphe; a decade ago, under the same growing growing conditions, Meyney would not have produced a wine nearly as good as this 2017. Tasted at a vertical at Château Meyney.

92 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Jul 2020)

Some quite assertive, ripe dark berries here. The bold, quite rich palate is firm yet fresh with cassis and black-fruit flavors. Lighter, elegant vintage. Drink or hold.

92 points, James Suckling (Dec 2019)

The 2017 Meyney is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. It jumps with ready-to-go notes of crushed black and red currants, mulberries and fragrant soil, plus wafts of dried sage and charcoal. Medium-bodied, the palate is bright and energetic with a great core of vibrant fruit and a soft textured finish.

92 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Dec 2022)

Meyney has had a strong couple of years, and even in this challenging vintage this is a wine that you want to look out for. Attractive baked plum aromatics on the nose, without the concentration of 2016 but with silky, well extracted cassis fruits and attractive spice on the finish. More closed down than it was En Primeur, this is going to need a few years from this point to open up.

91 points, Jane Anson, Decanter (Apr 2020)

Medium to deep garnet-purple, the 2017 Meyney opens a little broody, giving way to red cherries, black berries and stewed tea scents with a waft of dried herbs. Medium-bodied, the palate is chock-full of vibrant black fruits with ripe, grainy tannins and a refreshing kick to the finish.

90+ points, Wine Advocate (Mar 2020)

Fresh and direct, featuring a pure core of damson plum and cherry fruit, laced with light floral and red tea notes. Subtle chalky minerality gives the finish cut and length, while a pretty perfume lingers. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2021 through 2028. 15,416 cases made.

2021 Brezza Barolo Sarmassa (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy

"The 2021 Barolos (and the 2019 Riserva) find Brezza in fine shape. These firm, traditionally made Barolos will delight readers with classically leaning palates." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Our winery-direct relationship with Brezza once again pays huge dividends with the release of the highly anticipated 2021 single crus. By now, this modern benchmark vintage is on everyone's radar, and Brezza has undoubtedly captured the 2021 magic in their entire range, as our tasting last October confirmed. The smash hits of Sarmassa and Cannubi are towering efforts that weave together incredible terroir character and expert winemaking for collectible Barolos of the highest order.

Brezza's Cannubi holding is a 1.4-hectare parcel in the very heart of the cru, so it comes as no surprise that the 2021 "shows all the class and pedigree that has made this site famous" according to Kerin O'Keefe, whose own 97-point score is eclipsed by a 98 points from Wine Enthusiast, which describes it as "a profound testament to Nebbiolo's nobility ... completeness in a glass, a wine that carries both power and finesse with equal measure. The warm micro-climate of Sarmassa endows the wine with deep but balanced personality, with ideal phenolic ripeness being a typical hallmark of the vineyard. This 98-point stunner is "a wine that speaks of place with crystalline clarity," giving telltale signatures of the cru in every drop. Kerin O'Keefe likewise calls it "a gorgeous wine and great expression of this site," and there's no doubt that the magnificent 2021 vintage has turned out a truly special rendition of this long-time B-21 favorite. Finally, Brezza's prized south-facing plots in Sarmassa, Vigna Bricco, produced a marvelous Riserva in the acclaimed 2019 vintage that "brings together all the elements that make these wines so appealing, namely the elegance of Cannubi and then structure of the Sarmassa," according to Antonio Galloni. A concentrated, impressively built Riserva with stunning underlying tension, the 2019 is a hallmark cellar Barolo, made for a long evolution.

As thrilling as this trio is right now, you'll certainly want to stash bottles away and forget them for a while, because the rewards are sure to be as compelling as almost anything you'll find in these epic vintages, once the wines have time to reach their full potential.

98WE

From the legendary Sarmassa cru comes a profound expression that demands contemplation. The reserved initial profile unfolds like ancient tea leaves steeped in blood orange essence, revealing layers of complexity. Dried cherries seem awakened spiced and rehydrated while potpourri notes add ethereal lift. The palate moves with measured grace, each element in perfect alignment, revealing the true nobility of Nebbiolo. Here is power clothed in silk, depth without weight, a wine that speaks of place with crystalline clarity. A masterwork that reminds us why Barolo can move the soul. Drink Now until forever

2023 Domaine du Bel Air Bourgueil Les Vingt Lieux Dits (750ml)
Cabernet Franc from Touraine, Loire, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

"... [a] hidden-gem domaine that is also one of the benchmarks for the Bourgueil appellation." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Loire Buyer

We had been searching for the wines of Pierre and Rodolphe Gauthier at Domaine du Bel-Air, since tasting the full range early last year, and finally the opportunity materialized in late autumn. Now, we not only have access, but we have direct access. The latest addition to our Loire direct-import stable is a benchmark of red wine excellence, all the way from their stunning, old-vine, single-vineyard cuvees to the entry-level 2023 Les Vingt Lieux Dits, "a classic, old-school Loire Cab Franc in all the best ways," as B-21 Buyer Andrew Kitz describes it.

As you might assume, this Cabernet Franc is a blend of up to twenty of the domaine's micro-parcels in Bourgueil, with average vine ages of 40 years. Long, cold-soak maceration, natural yeast fermentation, and aging for 12 months in used barrels all contributes to the wine's classic expression of youthful Cabernet Franc. The cooler vintage resulted in a wine with restrained yet concentrated fruit, assertive mineral backbone, and varietally pure character all the way through. The 2023 vintage very much favored the Gauthier brothers' style, which is to say this is a structurally solid Cabernet Franc with real substance and cellar potential, all for an incredible $20 price.

As good as the Vingt Lieux-Dits is, it's the single-vineyard cuvées that cement the domaine's reference-point reputation, and the Grand Mont is the crown jewel in the stable. Vinous' Rebecca Gibb describes the 2021 single-vineyard wines as "long-lived, elegant classics" and the 94-point Grand Mont in particular as "savory and serious ... precise, balanced, and full of sinew." Much like 2023, the 2021 vintage was cool growing season that favored the domaine style, and the Grand Mont is an impeccable example of the very best qualities of classic, top-end Loire Cabernet Franc.

92AK

I had been searching for access to Pierre and Rodolphe Gauthier’s wines since I tasted them last year, and now not only do we have them, but we have them directly from the domaine’s cellars. The 2023 Les Vingt Lieux Dits is the perfect introduction to this hidden-gem domaine that is also one of the benchmarks for the Bourgueil appellation. It’s classic, old-school Loire Cab Franc in all the best ways. The nose leads with compact, tart red cranberries, rhubarb, and dried cherries. A dusty soil note gives a great foundation, but there’s also a lingering, darker edge to the bouquet with anise, pepper, and leafy underbrush. The palate shows the 2023 vintage in its firm but balanced tannic structure. It’s tightly wound and grippy at the moment, so decant or open it ahead of time if you’re trying it today. The same compact fruit profile from the nose is here in very primary form, and the mineral spine is well-defined and delineated. A hint of dried violet takes the edge off the minerality, but it retains a bracing, structured finish that needs time to soften up (which it will do). The Gauthiers’ top-tier winemaking and viticulture are on full display even in their entry-level gem.

Powered by dry botrytis, this is a wine with immense potential. It has weight, complexity and richness, all under the cloak of botrytis. To leaven the power, there is acidity, but this is certainly for aging.

Yum. Aromas of orange blossom, lemon curd, dried apricot and cooked pears fill the glass. It’s full-bodied and very sweet, yet tangy and lively from the vibrant acidity. Extremely long on the finish. Better in 2025, but already a joy to taste.

2023 Domaine Clos de la Chapelle Beaune Les Champs Pimont 1er Cru (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Beaune, Burgundy, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

Of all the new direct-import discoveries to join our portfolio last year, perhaps none reach the heights of quality that Domaine Clos de la Chapelle does. This remarkable domaine under the direction of Pierre Merguey and his American partner Mark O'Connell is still flying under the radar, but they're poised for a big breakout into the elite echelon.

The domaine's vineyard holdings are impressive to say the least, centered around their monopole Volnay Clos de la Chapelle 1er Cru. Top to bottom, the 2023s were incredibly impressive on both occasions we tasted them, at Wine Paris in February and again at the domaine in April. The critical press is equally impressed on a consistent basis, as the domaine has racked up solid accolades from Wine Spectator, Burghound, Inside Burgundy, and View From the Cellar.

The crown jewel is indeed the "utterly stunning" monopole Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Chapelle, a 96-point showstopper that's "all about finesse and its silky texture, with ... terrific dimension." The double 95-point Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds is itself a world-class expression of this hallowed site that can stand toe-to-toe with the likes of d'Angerville and Montille at a fraction of their prices. Gilman exclaims, "I have always loved this terroir since my very earliest days drinking Burgundy and it seems pretty clear to me that today, no one makes a better example of Taillepieds than the team at Clos de la Chapelle!" The JG94 Volany Santentots du Milieu is a bona fide gem in its own. "Remarkably sensual," the 2023 is "a simply great bottle of Santenots du Milieu in the making." The sleeper gem, however, is the Beaune Champs Pimot 1er Cru. The lesser-know lieu-dit turned out a fantastic 2023 with a "complex aromatic constellation" and a "a very good core of fruit, tangy acids, fine focus and balance and a long, suavely tannic finish."

It's safe to say we haven't been this excited to introduce a new producer in a long time, and our direct access to the domaine's cellars makes the entire line-up some of the sharpest collectible buys in our Burgundy inventory.

Showing oak spice notes, this red is smoky in style, with cherry, blackberry, mineral and green olive, plus hints of wild herbs and menthol. Displays excellent depth, harmony and structure, with a long, complex aftertaste that echoes the fruit, mineral and spice elements. Best from 2030 through 2047.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Apr 2026)

The 2023 Champs Pimont from Clos de la Chapelle was raised in fifteen percent new casks this year. Additionally, ten percent of the cuvée was raised in amphora. The wine has turned out beautifully, offering a complex aromatic constellation of red and black cherries, pigeon, coffee bean, a nice touch of whole clusters, a fine base of soil, cedar and a lovely smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied, complex and very transparent down to its soil, with a very good core of fruit, tangy acids, fine focus and balance and a long, suavely tannic finish. Lovely juice in the making.

"Readers seeking Napa Cabernets from the 2021 vintage with serious cellaring potential should consider stocking up on Smith Madrone's offerings, as these '21s are true cellar-worthy gems." - Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter

Stu and Charlie Smith have been quietly making some of the most classic, old-school Napa Cabs on the market since 1972. Perched high up on their rural property atop Spring Mountain, the brothers have largely avoided the glitz & glamour rat race that is the modern Napa wine scene. Instead, they stick to the fundamentals, beginning with their 15-hectare, prized Cabernet Sauvignon block planted in 1971. Indeed, James Suckling calls Smith-Madrone "a staunch defender of the restrained, elegant style of Napa reds made in the 1970s."

The 2021 vintage was tailor-made for the classicists, an outstanding campaign of ideal conditions, and the wines have proven themselves to be modern benchmarks. The 2021 Smith-Madrone Estate Cabernet is a knockout with a pair of 97-point reviews leading an impressive critical line. "A Cabernet that exemplifies how the variety became so popular: classic, structural, aromatic, and finessed. "A Cabernet that exemplifies how the variety became so popular: classic, structural, aromatic, and finessed. An impossible find for the price." That about sums it up from Wine Enthusiast. In a category that is becoming prohibitively expensive for many wine lovers, the 2021 Smith-Madrone takes us back to Napa's golden years, not in terms of style, but in terms of value as well.

97WE 97D

A Cabernet that exemplifies how the variety became so popular: classic, structural, aromatic, and finessed. An impossible find for the price, enjoy now for palate cleansing structure, or continue to age for deeper pleasure.

97 points, Elaine Chukan Brown, Wine Enthusiast (May 2025)

From brothers Stu and Charlie Smith comes their 2021 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon from Spring Mountain, a precise blend of 81.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17.7% Cabernet Franc, and 0.4% Petit Verdot. Aged for 18 months in 65% new French oak, with only 1,652 cases produced, this wine showcases the meticulous dry farming of their 15.4-hectare vineyard at a 579-metre elevation, with vines dating back to 1971. The 2021 vintage is yet another testament to their mastery, offering a purity and elegance that define these Cabernets, with impeccable structure for long-term cellaring. In 2021, the tannins are firm, soaring, built like sky-scrapers, yet remarkably well-integrated. The nose offers a beautiful black cherry and red currant potpourri, mingling with pressed wildflowers, sage, capsicum, and tobacco leaf. Juicy plum fruit intertwines with a graphite minerality, and while there’s notable density to the fruit, a fine backbone of crunchy acidity imparts a stunning lightness and lift. Readers seeking Napa Cabernets from the 2021 vintage with serious cellaring potential should consider stocking up on Smith Madrone's offerings, as these '21s are true cellar-worthy gems.

"This 90-hecatre estate in Pessac-Léognan is undergoing a renaissance in the hands of winemaker Stephen Carrier and consultant Thomas Duclos ... In short, de Fieuzal is an estate to watch." - William Kelley, Wine Advocate

The above quote from William Kelley truly captures the sentiment around this hidden gem estate in Pessac-Léognan. In a Left Bank appellation known for pushing quality and value to new levels, Château de Fieuzal is hitting all the marks lately, as evidenced by today's line-up of recent releases.

The estate's red is a sub-$50 home-run hitter every year, and that kind of consistency is on display in the 2019, 2020, and 2022 vintages, the latter of which "shines for its balance and purity" per Jeb Dunnuck and was deserving of 96 points from Yohan Castaing ofWine Advocate. Not to be overlooked, the 2020 is also "a medium to full-bodied, seamless, layered wine " that has racked up impressive accolades from across the critical space for its "great mix of richness and elegance."

Finally, like any great Pessac estate, de Fieuzal's white wines are some of the best in Bordeaux, and the two vintages on offer today each boast an impressive critical line that tops off at 95 points. If you're a savvy Bordeaux enthusiast who's been looking for your next great discovery, you've found one in Château de Fieuzal.

94V 94JS 93WI 93D 92WS 92WE

The 2016 de Fieuzal has a detailed, focused bouquet, wonderfully focused and precise, featuring blackberry, cedar and black olive scents. There is a sense of classicism and class here. The medium-bodied palate offers supple tannins, perfectly pitched acidity and a harmonious, tertiary finish that lingers long in the mouth. This is an outstanding Pessac-Léognan that, before its identity was revealed, I speculated could be Domaine de Chevalier. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Aug 2020)

Very intense red-plum and dark-fleshed peach aromas, plus a hint of pomegranate, make this generous, well-structured Pessac-Léognan red very attractive. However, the full, moderately dry tannins need some time to resolve. Better from 2021, but with a long future ahead of it.

94 points, James Suckling (Jan 2019)

The 2016 de Fieuzal Rouge is deep garnet in color. It comes barreling out with bold scents of blackcurrant preserves, stewed plums, and boysenberries, plus suggestions of wild sage and tar. The medium-bodied palate is packed with taut, muscular fruit, supported by ripe, grainy tannins and compelling freshness, finishing long with a skip in its step.

93 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Dec 2022)

Deep rose-violet colour, showing how easily anthocyanins were extracted this year. This is a lovely rich, well extracted, intense wine of succulent black cherry and damson fruits coupled with cigar box scents. It has this stunning balance and 'essence of Bordeaux' spirit that Pessac delivers so well in its best vintages.

93 points, Jane Anson, Decanter (Apr 2017)

Youthfully vivid, with lots of red and black currant and raspberry confiture flavors driving through, inlaid with anise and sweet tobacco hints. Vibrant throughout, with a roasted apple wood note giving the finish a second kick. Best from 2022 through 2032. 4,833 cases made.

This oak-aged Morgon is still very young and needs some time in bottle to open up, but everything is there on the very well-structured medium- to full-bodied palate. Excellent energy at the long finish. Tons of savory, toasty and forest floor complexity right through the long, polished finish. From the foot of the Cote du Py site. Matured in 10-year-old barrels. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

2020 Chateau Margaux (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Gorgeous aromas of dark plums and violets. Orange peel, too. Some crushed stone. Bark. Stems. Iron shavings. Full-bodied, but very tight and compacted. The tannins are all here making it very structured, yet they are polished and melted together. Needs years to show all of its greatness. Incredible polish and structure. More structured than the 2019. Try after 2030 and beyond.

100 points, James Suckling (May 2023)

This has grip and poise, it edges forward with slate textured tannins, not givin too much away at first, but sit with it, because the future brilliance of this Margaux is there to be seen if you take your time. It displays a seriousness of intent that sets it apart in expression from vintages like the 2018, and has dense and powerful red and black fruits along with supple and plentiful tannins that have no intention of relinquishing their hold for decades to come. Gingerbread, liqourice root, grilled sandalwood, red peppers, mint leaf and peony flowers add waves of complexity as it widens and softens through the mid palate, along with raspberry puree and edges of patisserie cream. A Margaux for the ages. 100% new oak, 36hl/h yield after the dry summer.

100 points, Jane Anson (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Chateau Margaux is deep garnet-purple in color. After a couple of swirls, notions of blackcurrant pastilles, redcurrant jelly, and juicy black plums soar from the glass, leading to underlying suggestions of dark chocolate, candied violets, cast-iron pan, and forest floor. The medium-bodied palate is satiny smooth, vibrant, and energetic, featuring floral, mineral, and black fruit layers, finishing very long and shimmery. Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for 89% of the blend, completed by 8% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc.

99 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Mar 2023)

The 2020 Margaux Grand Vin is ravishing. At once refined and exuberant, Margaux beautifully captures the spirit of the vintage. Layers of dark fruit, spice, lavender, crushed flowers and leather open graciously, revealing a wine of uncommon depth and finesse. The 100% new oak is not at all perceptible. Enveloping on the palate, with striking resonance and exceptional balance, the 2020 is very clearly a great modern Margaux. It's a brilliant effort from Margaux and the team led by Managing Director Philippe Bascaules.

98 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2023)

This is a big wine, smoky and rich. With a higher proportion of Petit Verdot than in the past, it offers complexity and bold black fruits. The wine is structured while always ripe and generous. Drink this magnificent wine from 2028.

2023 Marchand-Grillot En Bollery Coteaux Bourguignon (750ml)
Gamay from Bourgogne, Burgundy, France

April's trip to Burgundy focused heavily on the Côte de Nuits, and we were fortunate to stumble upon a remarkable, family-run domaine in Gevrey that remains very much under the radar, despite an enviable stable and comprehensive range of bottlings. Marchand-Grillot's vine holdings include many of the best 1er Crus in Gevrey, but as with most of our favorite domaine's, their star really shines in the village level. After all, it's a real indication of commitment and expertise to make a top-notch expression at this tier, and along with superb the Morey-St-Denis, their 2023 Gevrey-Chambertin made perhaps the biggest impression on us. The domaine's several excellent village parcels comprise this bottling, many of which are bottled on their own as single-cru expressions as well, so this cuvée puts forth both marvelous fruit expression and superb terroir signature.

"...this is a quintessential Gevrey that will stretch its legs for several years and blossom into a real showstopper for savvy and patient Burgundy aficionados." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Burgundy Buyer

Morey-St-Denis remains something of an afterthought in the wider world of Burgundy, but when you're presented with an expression like the 2023 from Marchand-Grillot, you'll take a long, serious look at what is arguably the Côte de Nuits' finest hotbed of quality and value. This 2023 does everything you'd expect from a well-crafted, exemplary village bottling.

"Eyebrows raised all around the table when we tasted it at the domaine, so we knew we were on to a real gem here. Classy and gorgeous – that about sums it up." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Burgundy Buyer

Finally, there my be few values in Burgundy sharper than the 2023 En Bollery Coteaux Bourguignons, from a parcel with grand cru pedigree (but for an old stone wall) and Bourgogne Rouge pricing. The En Bollery plot is separated from Grand Cru Clos Vougeot by nothing but the east wall of the Clos itself, yet the wine bears the humble Coteaux designation thanks to the presence of Gamay in the vineyard and the wine. No matter, as the 2023 shows "next-level concentration, precision, and purity" that makes it "essentially every bit as good as many village crus from the Côte de Nuits, at a mere fraction of the price," as Andrew puts it.

As cellar-worthy Burgundy of exceptional quality at a fair deal is becoming more and more difficult to find, we're thrilled to be able to bring you examples like these at domaine-direct pricing.

91AK

The value star of our April trip to Burgundy, this phenomenal single-vineyard overachiever is a true unicorn in every sense, starting with the vineyard pedigree. The En Bollery site sits just outside the Clos du Vougeot Grand Cru, so the only thing separating this terroir from the Grand Cru terroir next door is the east wall of the Clos itself, and that pedigree is completely clear in the wine’s character. The aromatic purity is something else, with a luxurious red fruit core – bright cherry and cranberry – and a graceful, floral violet charm at the edges. The minerality is subtle, but it’s not lacking. It’s just that the fruit is so perfumed and expressive. The palate also shows next-level concentration, precision, and purity, with bright fruit tones and clear mineral signature amplified by the wine’s balanced yet enveloping texture. It’s essentially every bit as good as many village crus from the Côte de Nuits, at a mere fraction of the price.

The 2019 Mouton Rothschild is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple colored, it races out of the glass with gregarious scents of creme de cassis, redcurrant jelly, black raspberries, and chocolate-covered cherries, giving way to a serious undercurrent of licorice, forest floor, candied violets, and cardamom with a touch of cast-iron pan. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is jam-packed with expressive red, black, and blue fruit layers, framed by fine-grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing with floral, exotic spices and a mineral firework display.

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Mouton Rothschild has come together beautifully since I tasted it from barrel. Today, it is unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage. Powerful and statuesque in its beauty, Mouton is remarkable in every way. Layers of dark-toned fruit confer seriousness and intensity that builds with time. All of the finesse I saw in barrel is still present. Since then, the 2019 has gained flesh and vibrancy. Magnificent!

99 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

This is incredibly complex, with all the cabernet descriptors, from mint and lead pencil to blackberry, blackcurrant and menthol. It changes all the time in the glass, just as in the nose. Yet, it remains cool and classy. Full-bodied with very fine, tight tannins that run the length of the wine, carrying on and on and on. Well-framed and compact wine. Never-ending procession of currant, berry and black cherry fruit, together with licorice, earth and just a hint of black truffle. 90% cabernet sauvignon, 9% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Give this until 2028 to show its true greatness.

99 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Mouton Rothschild is the most dramatic of the Médoc first growths, soaring from the glass with aromas of cassis, blackberries and violets mingled with rich aromas of cedar, cigar wrapper, licorice, loamy soil and spices. Full-bodied, layered and multidimensional, it's deep and powerful, with huge levels of concentration and an ineffably complete, seamless profile, concluding with a long, resonant finish. Plenty of ripe tannin is hidden by its ample core of fruit, and despite its youthful polish, this will require plenty of bottle age to realize all its potential. This blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot tastes in many respects like the 2016 Mouton's more sun-kissed cousin.

98+ points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Château Mouton Rothschild is based on 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, and it hit a relatively normal alcohol level of 13.5%, which is higher than the 2009 and shows the quality of the Cabernet Sauvignon in the vintage. It shows the new, modern style of Bordeaux in its purity, elegance, and finesse while still being an incredibly concentrated Pauillac, and where some vintages of Mouton can just about jump out of the glass, this is a more seamless, streamlined, elegant beauty that builds with time in the glass and is just about impossible to fault. Gorgeous crème de cassis, lead pencil shavings, forest floor, licorice, damp earth, and graphite, as well as some espresso nuances, emerge on the nose, and it's rich, medium to full-bodied, has ultra-fine tannins, and a great finish. This is pure haute couture in Bordeaux that unquestionably offers pleasure today (again, just about all modern Bordeaux from a great vintage offer pleasure in their youth) but will require a solid decade to hit maturity, and it should evolve for 20, 30, 40 years or more. This is not an unformed beast of wine that demands bottle age, and I suspect it will have a broad, forgiving drink window that consumers will love.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

Plows straight ahead, with a rather towering display of cassis as well as cherry and plum reduction notes that are pure, defined and deftly supported by a seamlessly embedded iron spine. Features light savory, floral and red tea notes that flash in the background, while the fruit glistens through the extremely lengthy finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2045.

2023 Chateau de Vaudieu Les Vieilles Roussanne Blanc (750ml)
Roussanne from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

"In addition to the brilliant reds, this estate fashions some of the greatest whites in the appellation." - Jeb Dunnuck

Château de Vaudieu is a long-time favorite among Châteauneuf-du-Pape insiders for their ultra-refined style and their impeccable terroir (neighbors to the cult icon Chateau Rayas, so it's no surprise), but their wines are typically very scarce in the U.S. market. So, when we came across a parcel of their dazzling 2022s, we jumped on it without hesitation.

Vaudieu's impeccable, sandy soils endow the estate's red wines with uncompromising elegance and finesse, while simultaneously imparting serious concentration to the flavor profiles and structures. "Unquestionably up with the top wines of the vintage" according to Dunnuck, the 2022 Val de Dieu, a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 20% Mourvèdre, shines in the early-harvest 2022 vintage, capturing all the vintage's bright, sunny character while remaining incredibly sleek and agile. The 96-point Amiral G and 97-Point L' Avenue are every bit the cult-caliber showstoppers that their reputations imply, the latter also "up with the crème de la crème of the vintage" per Dunnuck and the former a "structured and concentrated ...  great success" in the words of Advocate's Yohan Castaing.

Of course, as Dunnuck notes above, no serious Rhône fan should overlook the Vaudieu whites, benchmarks in every way, starting with the prodigious, 97-point, "Hermitage-like" Clos de Belvedere, a cuvée of 100% Grenache Blanc that's the absolute height of the varietal expression. In the same league of varietal masterpieces, the Vieilles Roussanne is "an enticing white, with simmering, spicy power and dimension" that shows its limestone terroir in perfect clarity along side its pure Roussanne character.

This is a standout range the exemplifies one of the appellation's great benchmark estates, offering collectors a bevy of cellar-worthy stunners that can stand toe-to-toe with the very best that Châteauneuf has to offer.

96JD 96D 94WS

The 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Vieilles Roussanne is from 100% Roussanne. Its medium gold hue is followed by gorgeous nose of honeyed peach, acacia flowers, toasted bread, and white almonds. I love its overall balance, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a pure, seamless, layered mouthfeel, terrific concentration, and outstanding length.

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2024)

More colour than most pure Roussannes, and plenty of intensity from the ripe fruit and generous oak ageing. Full and opulent with a rich pear flavour – very 'Châteauneuvois'. The acidity is quite surprising for the style, and there’s sandalwood, honey and spice into the long finish. A lovely example of a ripe, oaked Roussanne that finishes long and fresh. Grown on limestone soils, half aged in new barriques, half in used ones.

96 points, Matt Walls, Decanter (Jul 2024)

An enticing white, with simmering, spicy power and dimension. Crisp tangerine acidity powers through the opulent palate, rich with apricot, tropical fruit and buttered brioche. Offers the density and complexity to hold up to the oak, while salty mineral notes add savory depth. Chamomile, sun tea and toasted almond detail the long, delicious finish. Drink now through 2030. 450 cases made, 50 cases imported.

Never more true at these exceptional bargain prices.

The 2023 Suduiraut is a model of modern Sauternes. Orange peel, burnt sugar, crème-brûlée, tangerine peel, and wild flowers inform a Sauternes of total finesse and silkiness. Yields were a measly 12 hectoliters per hectare. The 150 grams of residual sugar are not especially evident. Everything about the 2023 is perfectly judged. It can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring or cellared for decades. The 2023 is a timeless wine that is among the most notable successes of the year.

With 150 grams per liter of residual sugar, the 2023 Suduiraut is exquisite, unfurling from the glass with aromas of pineapple, exotic fruits, spices, honey, ripe orchard fruits and a touch of menthol.
