I hadn’t used B21 previously. They had a particular gin we don’t have locally. They did a great job communicating about my order, packed the bottles securely, and allowed a drop‑ship so I didn’t have to worry about being home to sign for it. Overall, a great experience!

2021 Fontanabianca Barbaresco Bordini (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

From one of our most proven performers in Barbaresco, we have a spectacular opportunity on a single-vineyard stunner with a raft of critical accolades, from an epic vintage, and at a flat-out must-see price. Fontanabianca's Matteo Pola farms his family's outstanding vine holdings as they have for generations, and the results are some of the finest under-the-radar gems you'll find in Barbaresco, from their entry-level bottling to the insider-favorite, single-vineyard expressions like the 2021 Bordini.

"The Fontanabianca 2021 Barbaresco Bordini, in the bottle with the black label, represents a step up in terms of focus and power..." - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

From a prized parcel very near to the Tanaro River, the Bordini offers a fantastic juxtaposition of body, depth, finesse, and elegance. The site's warm location and microclimate provides exceptional phenolic ripeness in the fruit, but the clay-limestone soils with their veins of sand endow the wine with effortless precision and grace, so Barbaresco collectors get the best of both worlds in one impeccable expression. A "stunning ,,, utterly delicious" offering with glowing accolades from several critics, led by Kerin O'Keefe's 96 points and 95 points from Wine Advocate's Monica Larner, the 2021 Fontanabianca Bordini is a no-brainer, razor-sharp buy for Piedmont collectors looking to maximize their collectible bang for the buck.

96KO 95WA 94JD 94JS

Showing intensity and elegance, the stunning 2021 Fontanabianca Bordini opens with heady aromas of ripe red berry, mocha, violet and a balsamic whiff of camphor. It’s utterly delicious, with flavors of raspberry compote, red cherry, star anise and cake spice that dance across the palate alongside taut, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity keeps it beautifully balanced and vibrant while a saline note lingers on the finish.

96 points, Kerin O'Keefe (Apr 2024)

The Fontanabianca 2021 Barbaresco Bordini, in the bottle with the black label, represents a step up in terms of focus and power over the village bottling. This wine is extremely direct and linear with red and purple fruits, crushed stone and herbs. Nebbiolo grapes come from 60-year-old vineyards. This is another historic family parcel near the Tanaro River on clay limestone soils with prominent veins of sand. This location means slightly warmer temperatures and more humidity in certain vintages. Otherwise, the quality of the soils contributes to the finesse and elegance of this wine. Production is 10,000 bottles.

95 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jan 2025)

The 2021 Barbaresco Bordini displays a medium ruby color with a touch more pigment and is spiced with aromas of red cherries, a delicate touch of licorice, roses, and crushed stones. It takes on a nice amount of tension on the palate, with medium body, ripe tannins, and balanced acidity. While it’s going to benefit from year or two in bottle, it’s appealing now and is going to drink at its best over the next 10-12 years.

94 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2024)

Fresh and floral in aroma, this medium-bodied wine offers charming rose petal, orange rind and rooibos tea aromas followed by tangy raspberries, citrus and red cherry tones with good depth and length on the finish. Best from 2027.

2019 Forman Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"Ric Forman's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is shaping up to be epic. A wine of unreal precision and energy, the 2019 dazzles with its magnificent purity and class." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Ric Forman's status as a cult Napa pioneer is well-established, with a critical track record to match the best of them. His 11-acre Howell Mountain property is the source of his expertly crafted, classically styled Cabernets, which he has been turning out since 1983. Perfectly justified in resting on his laurels, Ric instead keeps knocking out the hits, as we clearly see in the stellar, 97-point 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Three distinct parcels make up Forman's vineyard, and each one lends its own particular touch to the finished wine, while Forman's own traditionalist winemaking methods ensure a consistency of style and excellence that few in Napa can match. The wine's "remarkable textural intensity" is a hallmark Forman calling card, and it portends a long life in the cellar, as is the case with almost every vintage he's ever made. We just sourced a must-see parcel at unbeatable pricing, not only on the regular 750ml format, but also on large-format 1.5L magnums and 3L jeroboams. It's a can't-miss opportunity for serious Napa collectors to load up on a genuine classic from a generational winemaking talent.

97V 96JD

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich, heady wine. Even though it was just bottled, the 2019 possesses remarkable textural intensity. A whole range of floral and savory notes open as this statuesque Cabernet shows off its personality. This is an especially rich, bombastic Cabernet from Ric Forman. That is especially evident when tasted next to the 2018.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2022)

Similarly hued, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley offers a classic, old school Napa Cabernet nose of darker currants, green tobacco, spring flowers, camphor, and new leather. As with the 2018, it plays in a more medium to full-bodied, elegant style, has ripe yet certainly present tannins, and a great finish. The 2019 is more accessible and open than the 2018 and should continue drinking brilliantly for another two decades if stored correctly.

2014 Leoville Las Cases (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Saint-Julien, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

"Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the greatest and most consistent estates of Bordeaux..."

- William Kelley, Wine Advocate

Here's a rare opportunity to secure a trove of all-time great library vintages from the legendary Château Léoville Las-Cases, long considered 'first among the Super-Seconds' of Bordeaux with a reputation for First Growth quality. Now offered at best-in-market pricing, these monumental classics will evolve for decades to come, some already aged 40 years in pristine cellar conditions, all garnering 95-point ratings or higher, including multiple 100-point trophies.

Bordering First Growth Latour on the northern end of St-Julien overlooking the Gironde and managed by the Delon family since the late 19th century, the 98 hectares of Las Cases vineyards are planted in a single block encompassing a mosaic of terroirs, surrounded by walls known as the Grand Clos. In other words, it's the ideal terroir for producing immortal claret. Leading with the timeless classicism of the 1990, this vertical comprises the very pinnacle of Las Cases in the modern era. The most coveted vintages of the 21st century, including perfect renditions from 2010, 2016, and 2018, highlight the undeniable greatness of the estate's contemporary track record.

These are all outstanding choices that stand tall next to their First Growth neighbor at a fraction of the price, offering the perfect opportunity to take any world-class collection to the next level. Echoing a sports analogy, the Léoville-Las Cases bench is deep, and with only homerun hitters in the rotation, any and all of them are guaranteed to knock it out of the park.

98JS 96WA

I love the nose of blackberries, blueberries, flowers and citrus. Hints of stones and wet earth. Full body and ultra-fine tannins that are so long and seamless. Incredible length. A wine that you want to drink now.

98 points, James Suckling (Feb 2017)

The 2014 Leoville-Las Cases is a blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with Cabernet Franc and Merlot, cropped at 33 hectoliters per hectare and matured in 85% new oak. There is 6.8% vin de presse this year. Picked between 30 September and 13 October over 12 days. It has a delectable bouquet with very precise, mineral-rich black fruit infused with oyster shell, which appears to be a leitmotif of Jean-Huber Delon's 2014s! The palate is medium-bodied with wondrous purity and tension, the acidity beautifully poised and imparting the palpable sense of energy from start to finish. Where it really excels is on the finish: exquisite structure, very complex with enormous persistence that lingers for more than a minute. Surely the wine of the appellation, ditto one of the best Left Bank 2014s.

2021 Long Shadows Feather Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Columbia, Washington State
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

One of the most consistently excellent and intriguing projects in Washington wine, Long Shadows is basically an assembly of all-star winemakers applying their world-class skills to some of the best fruit in the state, and it's no wonder that the 2021 Feather Cabernet Sauvignon is the most impressive wine in the stable, as it comes from the hand of none other than Napa Valley icon Randy Dunn. "This rich, spicy, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon has terrific purity, a deep, layered mid-palate, and a broad, layered, expansive mouthfeel that keeps you coming back to the glass," notes Jeb Dunnuck. This cult-caliber expression captures all the hallmark features that put the finest Washington Cabs in a class all their own.

With the help of one of the world's best consulting winemakers in Philippe Melka, Gilles Nicault has developed the Pirouette into a standout, Old World-inspired Bordeaux blend that's simultaneously pure Washington at heart, "a medium to full-bodied, nicely balanced, dense 2020 offering ripe tannins and outstanding length." The 2020 Pirouette is a true showcase of Nicault's blending skills, with top-flight Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot playing starring roles, supported by dashes of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec sourced from some of the appellation's most acclaimed sites, including Dionysus and Weinbau. The result is a wine that's "velvety smooth yet lifted in feel," displaying all the various varietal features in due course, along with classic Red Mountain structure and texture that tell you exactly where the wine comes from.

Finally, we have the 2020 Pedestal Columbia Valley Merlot that has been setting the bar for the category since its inception. Sourced from two premier sites on the Wahluke Slope, this top-flight expression boasts all the quintessential hallmarks that make Washington such a hotbed for collectible Merlot bottlings that rival the best from Napa and Bordeaux. Dunnuck declares, I loved the 2020 Merlot Pedestal, which makes the most of the vintage ... it's concentrated, has ripe, chalky tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish." In other words, you have everything you're looking for in a "luscious and round" 94-point rendition that will shine for years in the cellar.

All Cabernet Sauvignon and a blend put together by Randy Dunn, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Feather is inky purple-hued and offers a brilliant nose of cassis, new leather, graphite, and truffly earth. This rich, spicy, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon has terrific purity, a deep, layered mid-palate, and a broad, layered, expansive mouthfeel that keeps you coming back to the glass. 2021 Giuseppe Cortese Barbaresco Rabaja (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"The 2021 Barbaresco Rabajà is complex, dynamic and youthfully austere—in other words, it's classic Rabajà." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Barbaresco's excellent 2021 vintage is coming into the spotlight, and the region's prized crus are playing starring roles. Rabaja is arguably the most famous cru, a meeting point of the two main ridges that form the town of Barbaresco and a conjunction of soil types that combine with the vineyard's southwest exposure to give ultra-classic, age-worthy Barbarescos with deep personalities.

Among the finest exponents of the vineyard is Giuseppe Cortese, and the 2021 Rabaja from this insider's favorite estate knocks it out of the park with effusive accolades from all around. Kerin O'Keefe's 96-point review is accompanied by a pair of 95-point reviews from Wine Spectator and Antonio Galloni, who finds it "medium in body and complex, with myriad shades of expression ... a drop-dead gorgeous beauty." You might be tempted to pull the cork today, but make no mistake - the 2021 is a nascent stunner that's holding plenty of cards in reserve, so savvy collectors will stock the cellar and give this benchmark expression time to reach its full potential.

95WS 96KO 95V 94JD 94JS

Balsamic aromas and flavors of eucalyptus and tomato leaf are matched to a core of ripe cherry, plum and earth. Though lean and austere now, this compact red offers a core of fruit and, in the end, nice equilibrium and impressive length. Best from 2029 through 2047. 1,420 cases made, 300 cases imported.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Aug 2025)

Forest floor, new leather, dark spice and sun-warmed hay mingle with botanical herb on the impressive 2021 Rabajà from Giuseppe Cortese. It's full-bodied and savory, with flavors of juicy Morello cherry, raspberry, star anise and white pepper that before an almost salty mineral finish. A backbone of firm, refined tannins provides support while fresh acidity keeps it balanced and energized.

96 points, Kerin O'Keefe (Apr 2024)

The 2021 Barbaresco Rabajà is complex, dynamic and youthfully austere—in other words, it's classic Rabajà. Dark-toned fruit, menthol, licorice, spice, gravel, incense, tobacco and dried herbs fill out the layers. Medium in body and complex, with myriad shades of expression, the 2021 is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. Readers can also expect a Riserva edition.

95 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Oct 2024)

A deeper ruby/red color, the 2021 Barbaresco Rabaja has all the components of the entry wine amplified further, with notes of medicinal herbs, turned soil, sappy herbs, dried cherries, and orange peel. Medium-bodied, it offers good length, balance, and persistence on the palate. It’s angular but has ripe tannins, good freshness, and a persistent, savory finish with notes of dark rocky earth. This is a very well-done effort from Giuseppe Cortese.

94 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2024)

A charming, fruits-and-flowers aroma and the rather broad and velvety palate make this one enjoyable already. Rose petals, orange zest, red cherries and a hint of tart cherry provide plenty of pleasure, while relatively soft tannins keep it smooth. Best through to 2030.

2020 Domaine Giraud Galimardes Rouge (750ml)
Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Domaine Giraud is a relative newcomer in the Southern Rhone, crafting its first wine in 1974 from 4 hectares of rented vines and producing its first estate cuvee in 1998 under second generation siblings Marie and Francois Giraud. Spanning over 17 hectares spread over 64 separate parcels across the appellation, Giraud's estate owned vineyards are planted with vines averaging 60-80 years of age in a diverse mix of pebble, sand, clay, and limestone soils, each parcel farmed organically with minimal treatments and managed manually from harvesting to sorting.

Sourced primarily from old-vine Grenache including parcels in Les Gallimardes and La Crau, the elegant 2020 Domaine Giraud Chateauneuf-du-Pape Tradition Rouge is a blend of 80% Grenache and 5% Mourvedre aged for 18 months in cement vats and 15% Syrah matured in used Bordeaux barriques and bottled without filtering or fining, crafted in a vineyard-driven style with "relatively simple, unadorned winemaking" according to Wine Advocate's Joe Czerwinski with fine-grained tannins that frame the intense, luscious fruit and predict a long and satisfying evolution in the cellar.

A small-production cuvee that wasn't produced at all in 2021 due to frost damage, the enticing 95-point 2020 Domaine Giraud Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Gallimardes Rouge comes from a terroir-expressive vintage "producing athletic, elegant wines of intensity and panache" according to Decanter's Matt Walls, an under-the-radar gem priced far below the region's higher profile estates and expertly crafted to reward savvy collectors with over a decade of pleasurable drinking ahead.

95WS 94JD 94V 94JS 93WA

Offers inviting red currant and cassis flavors up front, layered with licorice root, fruitcake spices and charred mesquite. Though big-boned, this shows grace and polish, balance and finely cut texture. Reveals iron shavings and crushed herbes de Provence, which add a refreshing savory edge through a finish that goes on and on. Beautiful. Grenache and Syrah. Drink now through 2038. 70 cases imported.

95 points, Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator (Dec 2022)

Coming all from a single parcel in the southern part of the appellation, the 2020 Châteauneuf du Pape Les Gallimardes is 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah. Its slightly deeper purple hue is followed by full-bodied aromas and flavors of darker, almost blue fruits, ground pepper, loamy soil, truffle, and Provençal garrigue. With a forward, charming, sexy profile, it has sweet tannins and the balance and depth to evolve for 10-15 years.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2022)

The 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Galimardes aged for 18 months in a combination of new oak barriques and concrete vats. It offers up intense aromas of rose petals, very ripe red fruits, exotic spices and a dash of white pepper. Compared to the Tradition, the 2020 Les Galimardes has a higher proportion of Grenache, a little bit less Syrah and no Mourvèdre at all. The result is a massively concentrated, full-bodied red with a firm tannic structure balanced by lively acidity. What both wines have in common is their hedonistic appeal and age-worthiness.

94 points, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous (Jun 2023)

A great classic with loads of damson plums, dark berries, mocha and sweet spices. Full-bodied with finely grained tannins and a rich core of berries on the palate. Creamy and well put together. Fresh acidity with a dark cherry-like character emphasizes the flavorful and vibrant finish. 90% grenache and 10% syrah. Drink or hold.

94 points, James Suckling (May 2023)

The fruit-dominated 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Gallimardes almost explodes with ripe cherries and raspberries. A blend of 90% old-vine Grenache (planted 1903) with 10% Syrah, it's full-bodied, juicy and supple, then turns softly dusty on the finish. This delivers plenty of pleasure and satisfaction, although it exhibits neither the depth nor complexity of the stupendous 2019.

2022 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"...a dark horse of a Sassicaia that isn't giving much away today but will greatly reward those who can cellar it." - Decanter

The original Super Tuscan needs no introduction, and the newly arrived 2022 slots right in with the iconic estate's previous landmark releases, boasting a bevy of 98- and 97-point reviews that put it among the top performers of the vintage. The notoriously hot growing season got the better of many estates in Italy, but it's no surprise that the elite team at Tenuta San Guido managed the conditions with utmost skill and produced another magisterial, stunning wine of exceptional class. Perhaps the most notable aspect of the 2022 Sassicaia is its universally acclaimed, long-term potential. Every critic of note calls this a Sassicaia for the cellar, and you'd be missing out on a stupendous addition to your collection of Sassicaia greats if you overlooked this remarkable, showstopping 2022.

98JS 98KO 97WA 97JD 97D 96JA

Plenty of red currant, cedar, iron and terra cotta aromas follow through to a medium to full body with graphite, sandalwood, red currants and fresh Mediterranean herbs such as thyme and rosemary. The tannins are chewy but polished in texture. This is a Sassicaia that needs three or four years of bottle age to come together and soften. A structured wine for the cellar. Try after 2029.

98 points, James Suckling (Feb 2025)

Opening with aromas of menthol, dark spice, blue flower and dark-skinned berry, the 2022 Sassicaia is impressive and defied my expectations. Hailing from what was a notoriously hot, dry year, the estate’s location, including its hillside vineyards, vicinity to the woods plus much-needed rain in August preserved freshness and aromas as did harvesting somewhat earlier than usual, shorter skin maceration and slightly less time in oak. Showing elegant restraint, it’s balanced and tense, delivering flavors of ripe blackberry, wild cherry, licorice and mint. It’s still quite tight and youthfully austere, with a backbone of firm, refined tannins and fresh acidity. Give it time to fully unwind.

98 points, Kerin O'Keefe (Feb 2025)

The Tenuta San Guido 2022 Bolgheri Sassicaia reveals a beautiful fruit profile with fresh blackberry, tart cherry and Mediterranean tones of blue rosemary blooms and lavender sachet. I tasted this wine several times over the course of a few months, and it has already shown a happy evolution coming into slow focus like the faint colors that emerge from a Polaroid photograph. Indeed, the bouquet appeared more closed just a short while ago. The wine's strongest suit is its elegantly streamlined mouthfeel and its contained 13.5% alcohol content. These qualities add to the silky cleanness of the mouthfeel and the accessible freshness of this vintage. I am confident that this bottle will improve with time. It requires patience.

97+ points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Feb 2025)

The 2022 Sassicaia is a deeper, youthful magenta/red color with a slightly deeper aromatic profile of rosemary, gravelly earth, sage, mossy earth, and fresh black cherries. The palate has slightly broader shoulders but remains elegant. It has more plushness on the mid-palate, while its acidity shines through with the finish. It will need several years to shed its baby fat and show its full potential. Drink 2028-2058.

97+ points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2025)

The wine is tightly coiled and concentrated. It feels almost cinched at the waist, with a fascinating tension between the weight of raspberry, blackberry and strawberry coulis fruit and the wine's verticality, as if it's trying to burst out. Lovely mid-palate sapidity is allied to fresh acidity and fine but dense tannins, making for a dark horse of a Sassicaia that isn't giving much away today but will greatly reward those who can cellar it for 12 years and more. ‘What is sure is that 2022 will need a lot of time, but will also have a long life,’ said Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta. A hot vintage, 2022 caused the team to work in the newly completed refrigerated warehouses in San Guido, even moving the sorting table inside. Shorter macerations and 23 rather than the more typical 24 or 25 months of ageing in wood helped to maximise the freshness.

97 points, James Button, Decanter (Feb 2025)

The tannins are gentle and integrated even now, while still in barrel, and its provides a striking contrast wtih many 2022s from this corner of Tuscany, where concentration is the byword. Sassicaia is able to retain acidity even in the hottest summers, and the balsamic and butterscotch notes are beautifully balanced by rosebuds, lavender, red cherries, rosemary, fennel, charred sandalwood and tomato leaf. The frame is in place, and the density offset by a soft textural caress. Sample taken from three barrels, final wine to be shipped in a few months, after a dry vintage helped by a few rains here just before harvest. 40% new oak for ageing, Carlo Paoli director.

"The wines from Bosquet des Papes span the full spectrum ... Regardless of the style, the quality is brilliant, and these are beautiful wines." - Jeb Dunnuck

Bosquet des Papes' stellar 2022s prove once again that this rising-star estate is a favorite among Châteauneuf insiders and aficionados, who will be thrilled at this set of stunners from winemaker Nicolas Boiron. The trio of A La Gloire de Mon Grand Père, Chante le Merle, and Les 7 des Pignan each demonstrate Boiron's broad, multi-faceted style. The JD98 Grand Père is "up with the crème de la crème of the vintage ... a stunning success" that strides a fine line between the past and the present, while the Chante le Merle is made in the staunchly traditional method, resulting in a straight-down-the-line "age-worthy, classic, incredibly satisfying Châteauneuf-du-Pape" per Jeb Dunnuck.

The perfect juxtaposition to Chante le Merle's classicism is Les 7 des Pignan. The 2022 marks only the second vintage of this 100%-Grenache, micro-production cuvée fashoned from seven miniscule parcels in the Pignan lieu-dit. Seeing 98-point potential, Wine Advocate's Joe Czerwinski marvels at the "incredible complexity and elegance in this full-bodied wine that's concentrated and tannic yet supple, finishing long and velvety. Wow." Vinous puts an exclamation point on its unabashedly modern character, declaring it "bursting with energy and quite expressive ... with remarkable concentration and an expansive finish."

The 2022 Bosquet des Papes line-up is emblematic of the many shades of contemporary Châteauneuf-du-Pape, all expertly crafted by one of its most dynamic estates and winemakers.

A seductive, smoky red, with real depth to its savory character. The dried strawberry leather and crunchy cherry fruit profile remains fresh and vibrant, studded with sanguine notes of smoked meat and dusty earth layered atop smoldering iron. The tannins are sculpted to a fine grain, bringing elegance to the texture. Delicious now, this has years ahead for those with the patience to cellar. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2026 through 2040.

95 points, Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator (Mar 2025)

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes is another brilliant wine from this estate. Classic Provençal garrigue, pepper, leather, and assorted darker cherry and blackberry fruit all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, with a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. It certainly offers pleasure today, but it’s going to evolve gracefully over the coming 10-15 years. This old-vine cuvée is 86% Grenache and 7% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre coming from the Barbe d'Asne, Les Brusquières, Mont-Redon, and Pignan (nord) lieux-dits. It was not destemmed and was brought up in a mix of foudre, demi-muids, and concrete tanks.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2024)

Checking in at 15.5% alcohol, the delicious 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 86% old-vine Grenache, 7% Syrah and 7% Mourvèdre. It enters the stage with prominent crushed violets, strawberry compote, licorice and black cherry. Meaty components add more nuance. Full-bodied and flamboyant, the 2022 comes across as modern and polished. Enveloped in ripe tannins, it culminates in a bold finale.

94 points, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous (Jun 2024)

A textural, velvety and vibrant red made of 80% grenache, 10% syrah and 10% mourvedre. Aromas of dark cherries, blackberries, dried thyme, smoke and a touch of licorice. 2020 Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva (750ml)
Sangiovese from Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

"Luca De Ferrari and the team at Boscarelli make some of the most beautiful wines in the appellation." - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Of course, Montalcino is ground zero in Italy for Sangiovese, but savvy Italian insiders know that some of the varietal's best bangs for the buck can be found in Montepulciano. Situated southwest of Chianti, Montepulciano's slightly warmer climate means there's no shortage of ripeness in its wines, but the sandy, well-draining soils also imbue them with striking minerality that's more intense than in the wines of Chianti or even Montalcino. This trio from Boscarelli highlights one of the region's most accomplished estates firing on all cylinders.

The 94-point 2021 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano "is a total pleasure to the senses" according to Vinous, offering the elevated terroir expression that one typically finds in the finest examples from further north. The estate's benchmark pedigree, however, is on full display in the two Riserva bottlings below. The 2020 Riserva is a "sleek yet solidly built red," demonstrating the age-worthy quality of a great Vino Nobile according toWine Spectator's 95-point review. Also notching 95 points fromWine Spectator, the 2018 Riserva Sotto Casa is a stellar expression of the estate's most prized plot planted to high density in alluvial, red clay soils. A blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, it's a captivating example of what makes Montepulciano such a dynamic region,

If you're familiar with names like Avignonesi or DEI, you'll want to add Boscarelli to your list, as they're right on par with the benchmark names of Montepulciano, and if you're seeking top-flight Sangiovese expressions from outside the box, these are your next go-to discoveries.

Mint and eucalyptus shade the cherry and strawberry fruit in this sleek yet solidly built red, with a mineral note underlying it all. Balanced, this needs time for all the elements to integrate fully, yet there's still very positive energy driving the long finish. Best from 2027 through 2045. 850 cases made.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Oct 2024)

The nose is crisp and faintly medicinal, yet inviting, with aromas of blackberry tea, black cherries, pencil shavings and eucalyptus. On the palate, more blackberries are balanced by emergent undertones of herbs and earth, while that fresh medicinal nature lingers through a dark chocolate finish. Dense, firm tannins hold a solid foundation.

94 points, Danielle Callegari, Wine Enthusiast (Sep 2024)

This shows good depth and ripeness in its dark-cherry and black-raspberry fruit, those flavors accented by notes of lavender, thyme and singed orange peel. The iron-tinged tannins lend a coolness to the flavors, which remain balanced and fresh through the finish.

93 points, Stephanie Johnson, Wine & Spirits (Mar 2024)

A lightly chewy Vino Nobile with berry, bark and dried mushroom character. Full-bodied with some fresh acidity underneath the tannin backbone. It’s a little rough at the end, but should soften nicely in a year or two.

2020 Abadia Retuerta Seleccion Especial Sardon de Duero (750ml)
Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, Castilla y Leon, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation

"A bold New World-style wine in the Spanish context." - Joaquin Hidalgo, Vinous

Stunning, awe-inspiring, eye-popping in every sense – just plain nuts ... Abadia de Retuerta is beautiful. Restoration began on the buildings as well as the Abbey in the 1990s. The current owners are heirs to this place and they did it right. A majestic spa, a Michelin starred restaurant, a Relais & Chateaux luxury hotel, guided tours via helicopter.... Quoting Maître de Maison, Andrés Araya, "Every architectural detail has been immaculately preserved. The monks' cells are now guestrooms, the chapter house is the lounge bar, and the refectory is now a sumptuous restaurant."

As for the vineyards, they are planted to the north-facing slopes, on the south side of the River Duero. As with their famous neighbors – Vega Sicilia – these hillside vineyards on the south side of the river gradually ascend, topping out at 2,500 feet from their base near the river of 2,100 feet elevation. Working with world-renowned winemaker Pascal Delbeck (Chateau Petrus), the team here isolated the best parcels (pagos – 54 in all), planting 510 acres to a combination of soils ranging from clay and gravel near the river to limestone mixed with boulders and stones on the upper reaches of the hillside. Mostly Tempranillo, along with varying percentages of Cabernet and Syrah gives us Retuerta's fascinating, classically unique flavor profile. Planted in the 1990s (with Petrus' winemaker as their guide), the only major difference between the vineyards here and Vega Sicilia is vine age... the bang for the buck is unbelievable!

The cooler 2020 vintage did nothing to diminish the Seleccion Especial's bold personality, but instead only endowed it with an extra level of detail and precision, something we can all appreciate. With another round of strong accolades from the usual suspects, the 2020 is a worthy follow-up to the smash-hit 2019, and once again we still have the best price in the country.

94JD 93WA 93V 93JS

The 2020 Seleccion Especial is the producer’s most popular wine made from a majority of their plots and blends 68% Tempranillo, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Syrah, and some Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Graciano. The first year that last variety was included, the Graciano adds acidity to balance the other varieties that lose acidity quickly in heat events, like Tempranillo. It spent 13 months in 80% French oak, 20% American oak, one-third new, one-third second use, one-third third use. The acidity is indeed balanced and helpful in lifting the red berry fruit inherent in the medium-bodied wine, which shows subtle herbal, earthiness from the Cabernet Sauvignon. Complex, fine tannins give way to a finishing touch of leather and cigar box. Age 15-20 years.

94 points, Virginie Boone, Jeb Dunnuck (Jul 2025)

2020 was a cooler year with more rain, following the path of years like 2016 and 2018. The 2020 Selección Especial, produced with 70% Tempranillo, 14% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Syrah, 4% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot, is harmonious and moderately ripe at 14% alcohol, with nice balancing freshness. It matured for 12 months in French and American oak (35%) barrels, one-third of them new. They harvested it before it rained, and the wine has more herbal aromas and feels a little more Bordelais, balsamic, even minty. The oak is neatly integrated and folded into the fruit. 474,626 bottles produced. There are multiple lots of this wine.

93 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Jan 2023)

The 2020 Selección Especial from Abadía Retuerta is a blend of 69% Tempranillo, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Syrah, 4% Merlot, 2% Graciano and 1% Petit Verdot. It was aged for 12 months in French and American oak of varying ages. Dark garnet in color, it offers aromas of cherry, black cherry and mature red fruit over fine oak, cedar and a hint of vanilla. Subtle forest floor appears on the finish. The palate is intense and creamy, with plush texture, juicy flow and gentle grip. A bold New World-style wine in the Spanish context.

2021 Peter Jakob Kuhn Doosberg Riesling Trocken Grosses Gewachs (750ml)
Riesling from Rheingau, Germany
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"Weingut Peter Jakob Kühn has produced a stellar range of 2021ers that will be cellar treasures a handful of years down the road."

- John Gilman,View From the Cellar

For whatever reason, the estate of Peter Jakob Kuhn flies under the radar of even many tried and true German wine fanatics, but this pair of 2021s on offer today should go a long way towards rectifying that situation. As classic and traditional as they come in terms of style, the wines are nonetheless made according to owner Peter Bernhard Kuhn's forward-looking vision and innovative approach to farming.

The 2021 vintage was a clear study in the classic German Riesling profiles, the cooler conditions lending themselves to old-school, pure, filigreed wines that buck the trend of recent warmer vintages like 2020 and 2022, instead defined by their bright precision, electric vibrancy, and most importantly, long-term cellar potential. The Kuhn estate releases a year later than the majority of their contemporaries, so these 2021s are just now showing up where many 2022s (and even 2023s) are already on the market. Carrying big scores from some prominent voices in German wine, Kuhn's 2021s belong on the shortlist of smart collectible buys for any serious enthusiast.

Leading off, the 2021 Doosberg Grosses Gewächs boasts a towering 97-point score from Vinous. "Utterly concentrated, intense, almost searing with luminosity and brightness," it's a spectacular rendition of a treasured Rheingau site and the crown-jewel in the Kuhn range. For those seeking a razor-sharp cellar buy that punches well above its price tier, the 2021 Hallgärtener Hendelberg Erste Lage is just the ticket. "A premier cru bottling that clearly approaches the quality of Grosses Gewächs because of its old vines," according John Gilman, the 2021 is resounding triumph, "superb, impressive, profound, absolutely focused and delicious, yet so resonant and rich" as described by Vinous. The only drawback (if you can call it that) is their highly limited presence in the US market, so the smart move is to lock in and add this pair of surefire cellar contenders to your collection while you can.

97V

The 2021 Riesling Oestricher Doosberg is grown on deep loess loam on white quartzite. The vines are between 40 to 45 years old. The nose gives a flicker of reduction but also sports hints of crushed herb. The palate falls into step, presenting pure, lithe, bright lemon with herbal edges. This is utterly concentrated, intense, almost searing with luminosity and brightness, yet buffered. This is profound, earthy, almost chalky, with a beautifully fine-boned structure that just pushes this lemony brightness forward, like a beam of light, relentless but illuminating. (Bone-dry)

The Single Malts of Scotland Linkwood 10yr 2012 Reserve Casks Single Malt Scotch (750ml)
From Elgin, Speyside, Scotland

"...just a fascinating, multi-layered single malt that does everything it's supposed to do, in its own singular fashion." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

The Speyside faithful go head over heels for Linkwood, but finding a top-quality example on the market is always a stroke of luck. Just 2% of the distillery's production is bottled on its own, with the vast majority of the production playing a crucial part in Diageo's flagship blends like Johnnie Walker. Moreover, most of what you'll find on the independent bottler scene is some sort of sherry-finished version that may or may not reflect the true Linkwood character, which is why we were thrilled to come across this four-cask, limited edition from Single Malts of Scotland, done in light-toast, new hogsheads. As B-21 spirits buyer Andrew Kitz describes it, "this is quintessential Speyside and classic Linkwood in its pure form, with no bells or whistles," just a superb example of the unpeated Speyside malt that makes this distillery so widely admired (and what makes its stocks so jealously guarded by Diageo). With the characteristic combination of richness and elegance that defines Linkwood for true Scotch aficionados, this 10-Year-Old beauty will deliver everything you're looking for and then some.

93AK

Linkwood’s role as a crucial lynchpin in the Diageo blending machine means we don’t see much of it on the market – just 2% of production gets bottled on its own – but this elusive, fan-favorite Speyside distillery shines in this four-cask run from Single Malts of Scotland. A spry, young 10 Year Old done in all new hogsheads, this is quintessential Speyside and classic Linkwood in its purest form, with no bells or whistles. Such a precisely crafted example, the gorgeous medium-light gold color leads to a very bright, fresh nose with citrus zest and invigorating salt spray as the beautifully pure, clean malt takes center stage. Apple and pear emerge with some sweet cereal undertones, rounded out by luscious hints of honeydew melon. The palate shows the rich side of the malt, especially after a few drops of water. It maintains its elegance in the light salinity and lemon curd flavors, but soon offers up a raft of deep, well-rounded barrel notes like cinnamon pie crust cookies (the ones my mom still makes to this day) and light toffee, before coming back around to candied ginger and herbal tea on the finish. After about 45 minutes, the empty glass was all chocolate fudge brownie aromas. Wild, but nothing is out of place or overwhelming – it’s just a fascinating, multi-layered single malt that does everything it’s supposed to do, in its own singular fashion.

2021 Vajra Barolo Ravera (750ml)

"Stylistically, the Vajra Barolos embody all the virtues of modern classicism. The wines are elegant, silky, polished and an absolute delight to drink." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

You know the name, and perhaps you already know that the 2021 vintage in Barolo is one for the books, so let's jump right into this set of stunning new releases from "one of the leading estates in Piedmont."

As any astute Barolo collector knows, a great vintage is marked not only by the heights that the top wines reach, but by the overall quality of the entry-level offerings, and Vajra's flagship Albe bottling knocks it out of the park in 2021. Wine Advocate's Monica Larner tagged it with 95 points and called it "an enormously versatile expression of Nebbiolo, with an affordable price, that offers more value for your money than most Barolos out there," with several other critics chiming in with their own glowing praise for a serious sub-$40 contender.

Movnig to the single crus, Vajra's enviable stable is a star-studded affiair in this benchmark campaign, led by a pair of 98-point collectible treasures in the Ravera and Bricco della Viole, the latter "a wine of stature and breeding" showcasing "little details [that] emerge with terrific sharpness in an epic vintage such as 2021." Of course, we shouldn't overlook the 96-point Coste di Rose. "Loaded with finesse" per Kerin O'Keefe, "[it's] already tempting, [but] the best is yet to come."

It's safe to say this is one of the must-have ranges in 2021 Barolo, so collectors should make room in the cellar and cast a wide net on these guaranteed long-haul trophies.

98JD 97WA 96WS

The 2021 Barolo Ravera comes from an amphitheater-shaped vineyard that captures the sunlight, which the producers believe is what gives this cuvée its depth and richness. In the glass, the nose of the 2021 Barolo Ravera is remarkably concentrated, revealing notes of black raspberry and grenadine, fresh leather, and pressed flowers, with a long and sustained feel. The generous sweetness of fruit and its more noble, ripe tannins come through on the mid-palate, but it has a lot of finesse on the finish. The sapidity and purity of the fruit meets the tannins and acidity where they are fabulously. The estate keeps improving these wines, and this one is exceptional. Harvested over three days, it saw 55 days of submerged cap maceration, followed by 26 months of cask aging. In 2021, they lost about 15% of this vineyard production due to spring frost.

98 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2025)

From one of the most sought-after crus sites today, the G.D. Vajra 2021 Barolo Ravera opens to a vibrant ruby color. The wine takes its time opening, especially when tasted young, but that delay bodes well for its future bottle evolution. This wine is built like a wall, with each brick representing its own distinct character. There is dark fruit, pressed flower, herb, ebony and a very elegant mineral side. The bouquet is direct and vertical, with lifted intensity over a medium-plus palate. The tannins are elegantly managed, and this wine has the latitude for long cellar aging. It ferments in stainless steel and ages in large oak casks.

97+ points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jan 2025)

This red is complex and solidly built, featuring black cherry, blackberry and black currant aromas and flavors. Iron, earth and underbrush accents chime in on the firm finish. Remains fresh and vibrant. Best from 2029 through 2050. From Italy.

2022 Lingua Franca Estate Eola-Amity Hills Chardonnay (750ml)

"The team [at Lingua Franca] led by winemaker Thomas Savre is producing a portfolio of wines that show the power and complexity possible to obtain in Oregon." - Eric Guido, Vinous

Renowned for crafting top-scoring Burgundy for his family's Côte-de-Beaune estate, master winemaker Dominique Lafon worked as a consultant to Oregon's Evening Land Vineyards before collaborating with master sommelier and Evening Land general manager Larry Stone to co-found Lingua Franca in Willamette Valley's Eola-Amity Hills in 2015. Lafon's expertise at crafting exceptional Burgundy was credited with driving Evening Land's rising reputation early on. Purchasing the 140-acre Janzen Farm, a prime parcel situated next to Evening Land's Seven Springs site and adjacent to Domaine Serene's Jerusalem Hill Vineyard, Stone and Lafon then worked with renowned Willamette viticulturist Mimi Casteel to determine the precise mix of clones to plant based on the site's varied soils, utilizing organic and biodynamic viticulture throughout the estate's 66-acre vineyard and hiring Evening Land's former assistant winemaker and Lafon protege Thomas Savre to craft its vineyard-driven wines. Boasting experience at legendary Burgundy estates including Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Domaine Dujac, and Maison Nicolas Potel, Savre employs a transparent, minimal-intervention approach in the cellar, resulting in wines that now boast an impressive track record of world-class quality and glowing acclaim from the critical press. The 2022 vintage continues this upward trajectory in spades, showing why Lingua Franca remains one of Oregon's most exciting producers.

"I love its overall balance, it has notable purity..." - Jeb Dunnuck

Flora Springs' Trilogy is an original Napa Valley icon in the style of Bordeaux blends, having helped set the trends for the category for well over three decades now. Trilogy is undoubtedly one of the most consistent flagship wines from Napa Valley, with legions of fans that have made it one of the most recognized names in the appellation. The spectacular 2021 Napa vintage lends a stupendous character to this already exceptional blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, and 5% Malbec. "Gorgeous, perfumed" aromatics accompany a palate that's "concentrated and focused, a study of cohesion in the glass" as described by Decanter, all pointing, again, to the remarkable consistency that is a hallmark of the estate. We just secured a limited supply at a remarkable price, so fans of this Napa benchmark can load up at one of the sharpest prices in the country.

94JD 93WA 93D 92JS

The flagship 2021 Trilogy from this estate checks in as 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, and the rest Malbec, all raised in mostly (all?) new oak. This medium to full-bodied, ripe, concentrated, satisfying effort has lots of blueberry and darker raspberry-like fruit, some chocolaty oak and dusty minerality, ripe tannins, and a great finish. I love its overall balance, it has notable purity, and I see no reason it shouldn't evolve for 15-20 years.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2024)

A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Malbec, Flora Springs's 2021 Trilogy offers up an intriguing bouquet of ripe cherries, fine sandalwood and a hint of mint too. While not a huge blockbuster wine, it's medium to full-bodied, nicely proportioned and silky in feel, with a lingering finish.

93 points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (Jan 2024)

Gorgeous perfumed blue and black fruits, including bramble and blackberries, frame the nose. An herbal mint and eucalyptus note on the nose indicates quality. The fruit characteristics on the palate are concentrated and focused, a study of cohesion in the glass. Velvety smooth tannins and an air of restraint make this a meditative red blend to savour unhurriedly.

93 points, Brianne Cohen, Decanter (Dec 2024)

Ripe blackberries, cassis, black olives, cedar and vanilla on the nose. Hints of pencil shavings, too. Full and polished with fine and compact tannins and a lingering finish. Bright and vivid. Better after 2025.

2022 Domaine Alary Cairanne la Jean de Verde Blanc (750ml)
Clairette from Côtes du Rhône, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Savvy bargain hunters are by now well aware of the stellar quality for price to be found in the relatively new Cairanne appellation. Since its promotion to full cru status, the region has captured the attention of Southern Rhône insiders, and it's Domaine Alary leading the way.

Father and son Denis and Jean-Etienne Alary are renowned for their track record of consistent excellence, and the flagship Estevenas Rouge defines the domaine's style and reputation in the market. The 94-96 point 2022 rendition "features stunning aromas ... Full-bodied, creamy and lush on the palate, it finishes long and silky" according to Wine Advocate's Joe Czerwinski, the Syrah-dominant blend benefitting from some of the oldest Syrah vines in the Southern Rhône. The 2022 La Brunote is a prime example of the Alarys' wide-ranging repertoire and skill set. The 92-94WA, Mourvèdre-based blend excels in the warm vintage, especially at our market-best price. "Full-bodied and richly concentrated, it's almost creamy in texture, with a lingering finish. Yum," declares Czerwinski.

To get a true feel for the elite position Alary occupies in Cairanne, don't miss the Jean de Verde bottlings. The WA94 Jean de Verde Blanc is "silky in texture, with a long, elegant finish—a stunning white from Southern Rhône," while the 2022 Jean de Verde Rouge continues this cuvée's track record as a benchmark Cairanne collectible. Garnering a whopping 95-97 points as a potential best-ever effort from Denis and Jean-Etienne, it's "amazingly complex on the nose ... [with] wonderful harmony. It's full-bodied and rich, concentrated and velvety, with a long, zesty finish."

In short, you'll be hard pressed to find a better bang for your buck in the southern Rhone. Alary is back at B-21 in a big way, with 2022s that set the pace for the appellation and offer world-class value.

Alary bottled two demi-muids (one second-use and one third-use) of the 2022 Cairanne Blanc la Jean de Verde, a special cuvée of 90% Clairette and 10% Grenache Blanc from blue clay soil. Scents of peach and pineapple dominate the nose, although this wine is more subtle and refined than the l'Estevenas bottling. Medium to full-bodied, it's silky in texture, with a long, elegant finish—a stunning white from Southern Rhône.

2023 Rippon Rippon Riesling Mature Vines (750ml)
Riesling from Central Otago, New Zealand

"Harmony is a word that oozes out of the 2023 Mature Vine Riesling ... This is elegant and poised. There's no need to wait—it's already delightful." - Rebecca Gibb, Vinous

Central Otago's Rippon is unequivocally a "grand cru" New Zealand estate by any measure, their Pinot Noirs representing the very top echelon of the country's offerings in that category. However, that same incredible pedigree, from vineyards to winemaking, also goes into their estate Mature Vine Riesling. If you're wondering what New Zealand can do with Riesling, this one is here to tell you, it can punch with the heavyweights.

The estate's schist soils provide a fantastic terroir basis for this wine, as Riesling truly does thrive in this type – indeed some of the best examples in the world come from schist/quartzite soils, and the 2023 Mature Vine shows why. Loads of complexity inform both the nose and the palate, while the textural intensity is everything that great Riesling should be. As Rebecca Gibb of Vinous puts it, "the 2023 [is] varietally classic, but balance and structure elevate it."

We've seen some truly compelling Rieslings come from Australia over the years, but now you can add New Zealand, and Central Otago specifically, to the list of unlikely but excellent sources of stunning expressions that will thrill even the most seasoned connoisseurs of this noble varietal.

95JS 93WA 93V

Mineral and fruit-driven aromas of candied lime zest, gunsmoke, orange blossoms and slate. The medium-bodied palate has a laserlike acidity and generous texture from 10 g/L of residual sweetness, giving notes of lemon tart, grapefruit pith, mandarin peel and red-apple skin. A slight phenolic edge from one day on the skins lingers on the long-lasting finish. Drink or hold.

95 points, James Suckling (Nov 2024)

The 2023 Rippon Mature Vine Riesling leads with dandelion and beeswax, white flowers and saffron, lanolin and brine. In the mouth, the wine is sleek, but the tail opens out to expose a wake of chalky phenolics. These provide grip and chew, and they are most welcome; it's a textural wine. The wine typically carries between eight and 12 grams of residual sugar per liter, and it carries it well—this year, it has 10.8 grams. 12% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

93 points, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate (Jun 2025)

Harmony is a word that oozes out of the 2023 Mature Vine Riesling. A juicy squeeze of residual sugar acts as the perfect counterpoint to the glacial pure Alpine acidity: this makes the drinker feel totally welcome while finishing with a definitive flourish of a conductor's baton on the final note. Lemon mousse, ripe green apple and white floral notes make the 2023 varietally classic, but balance and structure elevate it. This is elegant and poised. There's no need to wait—it's already delightful.

2021 Peter Jakob Kuhn Hallgarten Hendelberg Riesling Trocken (750ml)

94V 93JG 92WA

The 2021 Riesling Hallgartener Hendelberg Erste Lage, from slate and schist soils, comes with a flinty creaminess that speaks as much of reduction as it speaks of yeast. Slowly, hints of lemon appear. The palate is vivid, incredibly buffered, beautifully resonant, alive and bright with lemon. Citrus sprays but bounces from yeast, from extract. The 2021 is superb, impressive, profound, absolutely focused and delicious, yet so resonant and rich. Like sounding a gong whose sound rings, and rings and rings. It is very elegant, with beautiful green apples on the finish. (Bone-dry)

94 points, Anne Krebiehl, Vinous (Dec 2023)

As I noted in the past, Peter-Bernhard Kühn’s vines in the Hendelberg section of the Hallgarten are more than fifty years of age, so this is a premier cru bottling that clearly approaches the quality of Grosses Gewächs because of its old vines. The 2021 Hendelberg comes in at an even twelve percent octane and delivers a beautiful bouquet of apple, tart orange, a complex base of soil, citrus zest, elder flowers and just a hint of menthol in the upper register. On the palate the wine is vibrant, full-bodied, focused and complex, with a lovely core of fruit, excellent soil undertow, fine balance and a long, classy finish. Like many of the 2021ers from the estate, this is a tad tight out of the blocks and will drink with more generosity with a bit of bottle age. It is an excellent wine!

93 points, John Gilman, View From the Cellar

The 2021 Hallgartener Hendelberg Riesling trocken 1G opens with a fascinatingly pure and elegant, intense and herbal bouquet with notes of sage, African mint and crushed stones (phyllite slate). Pure, lush and savory in the palate, this is a vibrantly fresh, citric and well-concentrated dry Riesling with fine tannins and a structured, still firm and astringent finish. It needs time and aeration. 12% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in September 2023.

2021 Vajra Bricco delle Viole (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

98JD 97WA 97WS 97JS 96V

The 2021 Barolo Bricco Delle Viole is more refined and complete at this tasting, with more depth than the Coste delle Rose, exhibiting notes of raspberry liqueur, pressed flowers, sweet herbs, and fresh earth. A very pure and well-balanced vintage for this wine, it really shines with exceptional detail, offering even tannins and a balanced, seamless structure throughout. It feels as though this wine will offer the broadest window for enjoyment, thanks to its purity and length, which are quite profound. Drink over the coming decades. In the cellar, it underwent 51 days of submerged cap maceration, followed by 24 months of cask aging before being bottled.

98 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2025)

The organic G.D. Vajra 2021 Barolo Bricco delle Viole first shows a fragile side, but it eventually rolls onto much greater momentum and focus as it opens in the glass. This is always one of my favorite wines from this excellent producer, and I love it especially thanks to its fine nuances of redcurrant, pressed flower and something a little savory like peat moss. There is a hint of ashy stone or brimstone. All of these little details emerge with terrific sharpness in an epic vintage such as 2021. Fruit comes from a seven-hectare plot at 400 to 480 meters in elevation on Sant'Agata marl soils with marine fossils.

97 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jan 2025)

This red is rich and succulent, displaying cherry, raspberry, earth, leather and eucalyptus flavors. A mineral note emerges as this builds to the long, red fruit– and rose hip–stained finish. Best from 2028 through 2046. From Italy.

97 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Aug 2025)

Dark cherries, orange rind, dried flowers and cinnamon on the nose. The palate is incisive and medium- to full-bodied with tender fruit, refined and polished tannins and a long, persistent, flavorful finish. Elegant and almost ethereal in essence. Really well crafted and detailed. Better in 2026.

97 points, Jacobo Garcia-Andrade Llamas, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

The 2021 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is a wine of stature and breeding. Vertical in shape, the Bricco delle Viole has so much to offer. Dark-toned fruit, leather, incense, gravel and licorice add an attractive savory edge. The 2021 is an especially somber, potent Bricco delle Viole. I would not dream of touching a bottle anytime soon.

2021 Albino Rocca Vigneto Ronchi (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"I was deeply impressed with the 2021 Barbarescos at Albino Rocca. The wines are aromatic, vibrant and bristling with site character ... More than anything else, these wines are defined by superb purity." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

For four generations, the Rocca family has been producing stupendous Barbarescos from several of the region's most prized holdings. The late Angelo Rocca had propelled the estate to prominence over the past few decades, and his untimely death left a huge void in the Barbaresco landscape, but his three daughters have admirably carried on his visionary winemaking and track record, which is on full display in this duo of 2021s.

The fun starts with the appellation Barbaresco that notched 94 points from Wine Advocate's Monica Larner, who dubbed it "a big surprise ... fresh and bright, showing enormous focus and purity," but the real showstopper is a single-cru masterpiece that checks every box. Ronchi is the family's most historic and important cru, with some vines approaching 75 years old. The southeast exposure and marl limestone soils, resulting in a "vivid, sculpted Barbareso [that] is hugely promising," according to Galloni.

These are unequivocally wines of superior class and sophistication that Piedmont enthusiasts will want to own in quantity, but they're also quite limited. This parcel is all we're going to get at pre-tariff pricing, so the time to load up is now.

96KO 95V 94WA 94WS 93JS

Another beauty from Albino Rocca, the full-bodied 2021 Ronchi offers enticing scents of new leather, wild herb, dark spice, camphor and dog rose. It’s succulent and delicious, delivering strawberry compote, cherry, mocha and truffle that dance across the palate. Velvety tannins and fresh acidity keep it balanced while a salty mineral note lingers on the close. A fantastic wine. Drink 2026–2033.

96 points, Kerin O'Keefe

The 2021 Barbaresco Ronchi comes across as a bit youthfully austere relative to some of the other wines in the range. Chalk, mint, white pepper, scorched earth and strong mineral notes infuse the Ronchi with tremendous power to match its sinewy, driving personality. This vivid, sculpted Barbaresco is hugely promising.

95 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Oct 2024)

The Albino Rocca 2021 Barbaresco Ronchi shows a dusty mineral quality that adds to the elegance of the bouquet. Beyond that, you get nicely ripened Nebbiolo fruit with wild cherry and redcurrant. It fleshes out over the palate with tart flavors and chalky tannins. Production is 9,000 bottles.

94 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jan 2025)

A supple, elegant and linear red, boasting strawberry, cherry, rose and menthol flavors, with balance and a long, slightly austere finish. This takes an hour and a half to open right now, so give it a few years in the bottle. Best from 2028 through 2045. 650 cases made, 300 cases imported.

94 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Dec 2024)

Red berries, orange peel, dried lavender and crushed stones on the nose. Medium-bodied, restrained and polished, with a dusty texture to its tannins. Dry and a little chalky at the end. Try from 2027.

2022 Domaine Collotte Marsannay Les Champsalomon (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Côtes de Nuits, Burgundy, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

They say a rising tide lifts all boats, and as we've seen the overall quality level in Burgundy reach new heights, we've seen its lesser-known and lesser-regarded appellations step out of the shadows with some truly compelling efforts that can still be had for more than reasonable prices. Marsannay is often exhibit A in that conversation.

"Collotte's 2022 Les Champsalomon is a beautifully crafted example of modern Marsannay that makes a convincing case that the appellation deserves more attention from Burgundy fans." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Burgundy Buyer

Philippe Collotte, and now his daughter Isabelle, have always done things the right way – low yields, manual viticulture, minimalist winemaking – it's all done to give the very best expressions of their excellent, old-vine parcels in Marsannay. Their 0.8-hectare plot in Les Champsalomon is quintessential Marsannay terroir, and the Collotte's always de-stem completely, that terroir is free to shine in the finished wine. The 2022 is a prime bang-for-the-buck contender. Indeed, View From the Cellar's John Gilman calls it "outstanding ... a stunning value!" B-21 Burgundy Buyer Andrew Kitz was also duly impressed by "a surprising level of craftsmanship that should have you rethinking what Marsannay is all about." Truly, the only thing about this wine that fits the Marsannay sterotype is the sub-$40 price. Everything else points to a top-class effort with excellent cellar potential and over-delivering collectible appeal.

92JG 92AK

The 2022 Marsannay “les Champsalomon” from Domaine Collotte is another outstanding wine made from vines in excess of fifty years of age. It sees a quarter new oak and like all of the family’s wines, is fermented with indigenous yeasts. The 2022 version comes in at 13.5 percent octane and delivers a beautifully complex and black fruity nose of cassis, black plums, smoked meats, a gorgeous base of soil tones, coffee bean, woodsmoke and a gentle framing of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, complex and fairly tightly-knit out of the blocks, with beautiful depth of fruit and soil signature, ripe, buried tannins, good acids and grip and a long, impeccably balanced and very classy finish. This is going to be a terrific bottle of Marsannay, but it is not quite as forward as a few of these other bottlings from the Collotte family and I would plan to tuck the les Champsalomon away in the cellar for five or six years, while drinking wines like the les Grasses Têtes and letting this superb bottle blossom properly. This is a stunning value!

92 points, John Gilman, View From The Cellar

Collotte’s 2022 Les Champsalomon is a beautifully crafted example of modern Marsannay that makes a convincing case that this appellation deserves more attention from Burgundy fans. Immediately bright and floral on the nose, it quickly reveals cool red fruits and clean, iron-rich minerality as its signature elements. After some time in the glass, white pepper emerges with hints of darker fruits and rhubarb, while the minerality grows more prominent among subtle, well-integrated wood notes. The palate is likewise built on wonderful precision and tension. More mineral than the nose, its medium weight and lithe texture support a ferrous terroir signature at the core that eventually gives way to subdued red fruits, which become rounder and fleshier with air. The very fine tannins, bright acidity, and excellent balance carry to a refreshing, stony, mineral finish. I honestly expected this wine to be more rustic, but it shows a surprising level of craftsmanship that should have you rethinking what Marsannay is all about.

97WE 96V 95JS

A classic in development, a wine that will last for decades. It is certainly powerful, but already the shape is finalized, with its plums and berries settling down with perfumes, acidity, just enough tannins and a warm, welcoming richness. A great argument for the superiority of 2001 over 2000.

97 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Dec 2007)

The 2001 Léoville Las Cases is simply stunning. I was fully prepared to decant it given that Las Cases is almost always a brute in its youth. And make no mistake about it, a twenty year-old Las Cases is still a youngster. Quite frankly, I am not at all prepared for the sheer intensity and richness that emanates from the glass. No decanting needed. The 2001 is simply magnificent upon opening. A rush of generous inky blackberry jam, spice, graphite and leather conveys superb textural intensity. Time in the glass helps the aromatics come alive. Shockingly rich and voluptuous, the 2001 is also wonderfully open today. Uncharacteristically so for Las Cases, in fact. But who’s complaining? Certainly not me. Even so, the 2001 is ultimately a mid-weight Las Cases, with plenty of opulent fruit, but not quite the tannic heft that is such a signature of this reference-point St. Julien. Readers lucky enough to own the 2001 are in for a real treat. This is an especially fine bottle, perhaps the finest I have come across. Aside from all the technical analyses and descriptors, what really matters most is that the 2001 is a wine that delivers immense drinking pleasure. I absolutely loved it.

96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Aug 2021)

A very typical Las Cases with a Pauillac note, even though it’s St.-Julien. Lead pencil, dried herb, currant and black olive. Medium-to full-bodied, firm and creamy with a long finish. It’s very persistent. Pretty austerity. Be sure to decant this a couple of hours in advance. Drink or hold.

The 2019 Léoville Las Cases is a brilliant young wine that will delight Bordeaux purists. Unwinding in the glass with scents of cassis, dark berries, cigar wrapper and pencil shavings, it's full-bodied, layered and tightly wound, with a deep core of fruit, lively acids and an abundance of rich, powdery tannins. Concentrated and serious, much like its immediate neighbor Château Latour, it is likely to emerge as one of the vintage's longest lived—and greatest—wines.

98 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

Remarkably sleek and pure, considering the generally burly and obvious tannic profile of the vintage. Delivers a pure and unadulterated beam of cassis and plum reduction flavors inlaid seamlessly with a glistening iron girder that seems to have no end point through the finish, where violet, anise and black tea notes shimmer. Reserved overall, with a beautiful austerity, this is an example of how great terroir always shines through—even in extreme years. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2030 through 2050.

98 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2022)

Currants and blackberries with crushed stones, bark and some conifer and pine cone. Perfumed. Discreet. Medium-to full-bodied with an integrated tannin structure that’s full of fine tannins that are weightless and seamless, building on the palate and coming out at the end. Needs five or six years to open. Texture of heavy silk. 79% cabernet sauvignon, 11% merlot and 10% cabernet franc. Try after 2027.

98 points, James Suckling (Mar 2022)

Composed of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Leoville Las Cases is deep garnet-purple colored. It needs a lot of swirling to unlock expressive notes of crushed blackcurrants, warm plums, and black cherry compote, with nuances of roses, cinnamon toast, tapenade, and cedar chest, plus a hint of iron ore. Full-bodied, firm and grainy, it is built like a brick house, so muscular and finely layered with wonderful energy and a very long, minerally finish.

98 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (May 2022)

More backward, deep, and layered, the Grand Vin 2019 Château Léoville Las Cases is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc that saw 90% new French oak. Just awesome aromatics of pure crème de cassis, graphite, tobacco leaf, burning embers, and gravelly earth all soar from the glass. This is followed by a quintessential Léoville Las Cases that's medium to full-bodied, pure, concentrated, and regal on the palate, with beautiful tannins. The purity of fruit is spot on, it's flawlessly balanced, and it’s going to age for decades. While it offers pleasure today, I'd wager it will take 10-15 years to hit maturity and will be a 50+ year wine.

97+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Léoville–Las Cases, bottled July 2021, retains the energetic, vivacious bouquet that I noticed last year from the barrel sample, offering intense blackberry, bilberry and still those faint shucked oyster shell scents in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with wonderful detail and precision, a mixture of black and blue fruit and enthralling clarity and length. Perhaps there is a little more creaminess in terms of texture toward the finish, a bit of "baby fat" that will be subsumed with time, so give this 8–10 years in bottle if you want to taste it in full flight. [Returning after 15 or 20 minutes, I discerned more pepperiness on the finish, and perhaps also less creaminess and more structure.] 14.02% alcohol.

"Stephan Usseglio has propelled this certified organic and biodynamic estate, named for his father, to among the top ranks of the region." - Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate

The name Usseglio is no secret to lovers of top-flight Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but it's typically PIerre that comes to mind for many. However, that's all changing in recent years, as Domaine Raymond Usseglio is stepping into the limelight under the hand of the highly talented Stephan Usseglio. Having been in charge here since 1999 at the ripe age of 22, Stephan straddles that wonderful line between youthful vision, something he's held onto even as his career has entered a new stage of accomplishment and accolades, and respect for his family's traditions, including their exceptional vine holdings.

The 2022 reds from Usseglio offer a crystal clear picture of a domaine firing on all cylinders and moving up in the quality heirarchy to the very top echelons, highlighted by the JS95 Cuvée Girard, a "dark and powerful" rendition that "makes a bold statement." Taking Grenache purity to the next level is the 2022 Cuvée Imperiale. "With ultra-fine tannins, flawless overall balance, and a great finish," notes Jeb Dunnuck, "it's a gem in the vintage." Finally, fans and collectors should not overlook the absolutely pristine 2023 Pure Roussanne, a 97-point tour de force that is everything as advertised - pure Roussanne varietal character that shows this revered white Rhône varietal in all its glory.

This in-stock trio is further proof that the domaine should be on any serious Rhône enthusiasts short list, as these expressions are some of the most polished and artfully crafted offerings you'll find in the region.

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Cuvée Impériale is just about all Grenache yet includes a mix of other permitted varieties, all raised in concrete. Playing in the medium-bodied, perfumed, elegant style of the vintage, this beauty offers an incredible perfume of sweet raspberries, spring flowers, peppery garrigue, and violets. With ultra-fine tannins, flawless overall balance, and a great finish, it's a gem in the vintage that will evolve gracefully over the coming 10-15 years.

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2024)

This astonishing 2022 Chateauneuf has giant depth and concentration of black fruit aromas with notes of spices and dry earth, beneath which is a deep foundation of super-fine tannins. Very long, imposing finish with stacks of licorice and black olive character. Great aging potential. 92% grenache from vines planted in 1901 and 1902, with a small amount of white grape varieties inter-planted. Matured exclusively in concrete tanks. Bottled unfiltered. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

96 points, Stuart Pigott, James Suckling (Apr 2024)

With a reductive profile, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale, a blend of 95% Grenache Noir and the remaining portion from other authorized varieties in unknown proportions, exhales aromas of peony, iris, dark wild berries, flowers and mulberries. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, it is characterized by ripe tannins and a broad, saline finish accented by peony notes and bright acids. This cuvée is a beautiful, expertly crafted Chateauneuf-du-Pape totally destemmed and matured entirely in concrete tanks. This is a real gem.

94 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Sep 2024)

Raised in concrete, the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Impériale Vignes Centenaires is gorgeous. Wafting from the glass with prominent spice box, black cherry, black plum and raspberry alongside minty shadings, the 2022 packs terrific focus and inner energy. Balanced by refreshing acidity and tightly structured, it should see its 20th birthday in excellent shape.

A well-crafted, vivid and bright blend of 80% grenache, 10% syrah and 10% mourvedre. The nose shows aromas of red berries, dried herbs, dried thyme and charred bark. It's medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins. Lively and focused, with plenty of energy. Spicy finish. Try from 2025.

93 points, James Suckling (Jun 2024)

Coming in at eye level with the excellent 2020, the complex 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Tradition is game on. Licorice, raspberry compote, black cherry, garrigue and white pepper are all nicely delineated. Full-bodied and framed by ripe yet gently grippy tannins, the 2022 balances elevated flavor concentration with ample freshness. It aged for one year in a combination of foudres (60%), demi-muids (20%) and concrete tanks (20%).

92 points, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous (Jun 2024)

Beautiful sense of freshness on the nose, then massively concentrated, with deep liquorice flavour and a savoury finish. Naturally big and muscular, tannins are a touch dry and fibrous, but should round out with time. Quite a beast! Should be good value for those looking for serious Châteauneuf bang for buck. This producer’s other cuvées this year are unapproachably massive and tannic, and need to be assessed in bottle before any reasonable judgement can be made.

96WA 94V

As one might expect, this is a brilliant wine, but it remains shockingly young, even for the fast evolving 1990s. Its deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by a classic, nearly restrained set of aromatics that includes notions of sweet black cherries, black currants, lead pencil, and wet stones. In the mouth, it is full-bodied, and while technically low in acidity, there is a freshness, delineation, and classicism in this full-throttle, rich, concentrated, impeccable 1990. While still youthful, it is easy to appreciate despite its substantial tannins. It is not quite as backward as the 1990 Lafite Rothschild or 1990 Latour. Anticipated maturity: now-2035.

96 points, Robert M. Parker, Jr., Wine Advocate (Issue # 183 - Jun 2009)

Saturated ruby-red to the rim. Bound-up but intense nose of licorice, blackcurrant, and chocolate, with lovely oak treatment. Brooding and unevolved on the palate, but the great extract and depth of flavor are easy to appreciate. Brilliantly delineated, thanks to sound acidity. Proprietor Delon declassified more than 60% of his crop to make this sensational wine. Endless, firm aftertaste.

A dazzling selection from the exceptional northern Italian producer "who put Friuli on the map" according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, these top rated Schiopetto selections are crafted as unique and transparent expressions of their northern Italian terroir, providing an opportunity for anyone seeking to explore the exceptional range of white wines from the Collio region as well as two high scoring red cuvees at outstanding pricing.

Among the first to prove "Italy can make serious whites" according to Wine Enthusiast's Kerin O'Keefe, Schiopetto is one of the oldest wineries in northeastern Italy, now spanning 30 hectares of estate vineyards planted on the ancient sea beds of marly clay and limestone known locally as ponca. While all the Schiopetto wines offer aromatic fruit and distinct minerality, here are some unique highlights of each selection:

  • 2022 Schiopetto Collio Pinot Grigio (V93) – Called "remarkably pretty, wickedly fresh" by Eric Guido of Vinous with ripe spiced orchard fruit and citrusy undertones.
  • 2022 Schiopetto Collio Friulano (WE93) – Focused on "perfectly ripe stone fruits, wildflowers and crushed rocks" according to Wine Enthusiast's Jeff Porter with saline undertones and balanced acidity.
  • 2021 Schiopetto Collio Pinot Bianco (V94) – "Generous and sweetly alluring" with a "juicy, acidic core" of rich apple and pear according to critic Eric Guido of Vinous.
  • 2022 Schiopetto Collio Pinot Bianco (V94) – Called "silky and enveloping" by Vinous critic Eric Guido with a vibrant interplay of citrus and stone fruit and refreshing acidity.
  • 2022 Schiopetto Collio Sauvignon (JS93) – "Bright and vivid with citrusy freshness, mouthwatering acidity and chalky minerality" according to James Suckling.
  • 2021 Schiopetto Collio Malvasia (V92) – Creamy textured with "vividly ripe peach and nectarine propelled by juicy acidity" according to Eric Guido of Vinous.
  • 2021 Schiopetto Mario Schiopetto M Collio (WE97) – An exquisite, single-vineyard blend of 95% Friulano and 5% Riesling described as "super tasty with a core of ripe and fresh stone fruits" by the Wine Enthusiast's Jeff Porter with "fantastic balance between weight and acidity."
  • 2019 Schiopetto Rivarossa (WE94) – A blend of Cabernet and Merlot described by Wine Enthusiast's Jeff Porter as offering "luscious dark cherry and plum flavors" with "a velvety texture and a lasting, satisfying finish."
  • 2019 Schiopetto Podere dei Blumeri (V95) – A "beguiling blend" of Merlot and Refosco according to Eric Guido of Vinous with "soft textures and ripe red and blue fruits."

The tapenade, blackberry, chocolate and hazelnut notes are intense in the nose and palate. It’s tightly knit and well-focused, with round tannins that are compact at the same time. Flavorful and pointed. It needs two or three years to open. Try after 2024.

95 points, James Suckling (Sep 2022)

The 2019 Blumeri pulls the taster close to work for its beguiling blend of grilled sage, cedar shavings, dusty rose and wild blueberries. It’s sleek and youthfully slender with soft textures and ripe red and blue fruits underscored by saline minerals as brisk acidity maintains balance. This finishes long yet dark and inward, leaving a salty tinge and concentration of balsamic spices and dried fruits framed by fine-grained tannins. Bury your bottles deep in the cellar. The Blumeri is a blend of Merlot and Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso.
