Sonoma's standard-bearer Ferrari-Carano needs little introduction. These quintessential California classics have been all-time best sellers at B-21 for years, and it's always nice to see a standard bearer continue to hit the mark. These 2021s and 2022s showcase winemaking duo Rebecka Deike and Natalie West at their best, all notching solid press from James Suckling and offering outstanding value and consistent excellence. The "Ripe yet elegantly balanced and refreshing" 2023 Chardonnay is a top-shelf value performer at 91 points & under $15, a perfect option for your next go-to house white. A step (or two) is the 2023 Tre Terre is full bodied with lovely texture and tension, outpacing it's sub-$25 price. For the reds, the 2021 Siena hits on all cylinders for fans of this QPR best seller, while the 2021 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon catches 92 points from Suckling, who notes, "Medium-bodied with fine tannins and beautiful length. Bright and vivid. Plenty of cabernet character." If you're looking for surefire quality at an easy price, you almost have too many good options with these Sonoma classics.

2020 Bodegas Beronia Reserva (750ml)
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Renowned for producing "classical, reliable wines" according to Wine Advocate's Luis Gutierrez, Beronia is a household name in overachieving Rioja value. Vintage after vintage, the estate delivers some of the best bang for the buck in all of Spain, attracting legions of fans who have made these wines into best-selling benchmarks over the years.

The JS91 Crianza is once again one of the Rioja's sharpest case-buy contenders. "Quite juicy and well made," it's a quintessential young Rioja for fans of wines both easy on the palate and on the wallet. The 93-point 2020 Beronia Reserva is another well-crafted edition of this fan-favorite to add to its consistent track record of reliability. The profile is everything long-time fans know and love, immediately accessible, charming, "harmonious," as Wine Spectator describes it. Made from Beronia's oldest vines, the 2016 Beronia Gran Reserva also brings home the goods and then some. Aged over 28 months in French oak followed by three years in bottle prior to release to develop its trademark complexity and depth, the 2016 is a "lively red, with well-meshed, sculpted tannins" according to Wine Spectator.

It's a perfect trio to stock up on to deliver outstanding QPR and classic Rioja style, time and time again over the next several years.

95D 93WE

Beronia is based in Ollauri, Rioja Alta, and sources fruit from more than 900ha of vineyards, all within 10km of its winery on a range of soils including clay-limestone, ferrous clay and alluvial; vines are aged from 20 years to some on pre-phylloxera rootstock dating back more than 100 years. The 2020 Reserva is predominantly Tempranillo and was matured for 18 months in a mix of French and American oak barrels, followed by additional time in third-use French barrels, and then at least 18 months more in the bottle before release. Very pretty raspberry fruit defines this wine, which is very fresh with bright acidity and soft, ripe tannins. Oak is very well integrated and this is an elegant and fine reserva with a chalky lift.

95 points, Beth Willard, Decanter (Mar 2025)

Aromatics of cedar, bramble and dark berries and a waft of crushed vanilla bean make for a satisfying, and palate stimulating wine. Firm while fine grained tannins keep the wine approachable now with the potential to age.

2022 Schoffit Gewurztraminer Harth Cuvee Caroline (750ml)
Gewurztraminer from Alsace, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

"The wines are compelling in a rather quiet way, understated but so convincing." - Anne Krebiehl, Vinous

"They are of a consistently high quality and, in my opinion, still far too rarely on the radar of importers, retailers and sommeliers." - Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate

Alsace as a whole is often considered an under-the-radar region, so when we come upon a domaine that is known as "under the radar," it's safe to say it's probably far under the radar. The shame is, as Wine Advocate's Stephan Reinhardt notes above, that wines and domaines like these deserve far more attention. However, clued-in and savvy wine collectors can reap serious benefits in the form of world-class cellar contenders at prices that are a fraction of what you'd pay for comparable quality and pedigree from Burgundy, Champagne, or virtually anywhere else in France.

Domaine Schoffit's vineyard stable is loaded with prime sites, but the unquestioned jewel in the crown is the Clos St-Théobald in the Rangen de Thann Grand Cru, inarguably the finest vineyard in Alsace. At 6.5 hectares, the Clos is now a monopole since Bernard Schoffit completed his ambitious reclamation project to unite the entire site under his domaine. The super-steep slopes and volcanic soitls produce one of the world's most distinctive Rieslings, and the 97-point 2022 ranks among the greatest vintages ever made of this wine. Not to be overlooked, the 2022 Sommerberg Grand Cru Riesling is another singular standout, this from granitic soils that shine in the wine's stunning combination of aromatic purity and textural intensity. Finally, the 2022 Harth Gewürztraminer showcases Schoffit's great sites around Colmar with fantastic varietal precision, particularly "the glorious spice of Gewürztraminer" as Anne Krebiehl notes.

It bears repeating – these wines belong on the short list of Alsace's finest names along side the Weinbachs, Trimbachs, and Zind-Humbrechts, so if you're a serious Alsace fan or collector of the world's best Rieslings, make room in the cellar. You'll be so glad you did.

92V

The 2022 Gewurztraminer Lieu-Dit Harth Cuvée Caroline is golden in the glass. The vines are from a massal selection with orange rather than dark skins. The nose is creamy with a gently spicy honeysuckle and a hint of iron oxide. The palate is beautifully smooth, with a creamy body that is mild, gentle and rounded. The finish displays the glorious spice of Gewurztraminer. Schoffit notes that he does not care about preserving acidity in this wine, as the vines deliver a natural balance. And yes, the wine is mild, but the tingling phenolics, combining grape and peach skin with citrus pith, make the mouth water with noble, floral, spicy bitterness. This is full-bodied with 12 g/L residual sweetness, finishing just about off-dry. (Off-Dry)

The 2022 Riesling Rangen Clos Saint Théobald Grand Cru is from a parcel in the midslope of the Rangen, picked from vines between 40 and 45 years old. The nose has immense clarity of the brightest citrus. The palate is totally taut, still raw almost, but displaying clarity, precision and wonderful concentration that tingles with all manner of citrus zest, spanning lemon, bergamot and aromatic tangerine. Exquisite density shows beautiful ripeness and serene smoothness, despite all the stone, wonderfully complete, without a touch of heat despite what Schoffit calls, rightly, a "violent, warm" terroir. The 2022 is a pure wine of stone and tingling, aromatic citrus zest. (Bone-Dry)

97 points, Anne Krebiehl, Vinous (Apr 2024)

The 2022 Riesling Grand Cru Rangen Clos Saint-Théobald is from 50+-years-old vines in the clos that includes the upper plots of Schoffit's regular Rangen. The nose is very pure yet very intense as well, offering the classic flintiness and iodine notes combined with fully ripe, bright, elegant and intense, spicy-scented fruit. Full-bodied, round and rich on the palate, this is a generous, powerful and textured yet always elegant and saline Riesling with some grams of residual sugar (4.1 grams per liter) yet the richness of old vines and their mineral, expression as well. This is a superb Rangen Riesling that Alexandre describes as "one of the best we ever did." The finish is in fact very long, intense and seriously structured and provided with persistent salinity. 13.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in Colmar, November 2024.

2020 Chateau De La Dauphine (750ml)
Merlot from Fronsac, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

A small plateau of shlallow limestone and clay soils, weather moderated by the nearby Gironde, centuries of history producing great Merlot-based wines ... surely you'd expect to pay a premium for anything from this exceptional Right Bank region. But think again. While prices in Pomerol and St-Emilion continue to climb (often to eye-watering numbers these days), the humble Fronsac appellation is still a veritable treasure trove of stupendous values that are hardly matched anywhere in Bordeaux.

Our line-up today offers a fantastic picture of what makes Fronsac such a rewarding region for Bordeaux lovers seeking the ultimate combination of quality and value. Led by a pair of highly acclaimed expressions from the benchmark La Vieille Cure estate, you won't find more impressive bang for your buck on the Right Bank. The historic Chateau de la Dauphine hit new heights with its "positively stellar" 2020, and long-time B-21 favorite Fontenil is "a winner and well worth a case purchase" according to Jeb Dunnuck. Finally, Canon Pecresse turned out "a pure, mineral-laced Right Bank ... very much in the classic, balanced, yet impressive style of the vintage."

The best part of the proposition is that you can indulge in any or all of them as much as you please. With pricing like this, you can stock the cellar with guaranteed value performers that will shine well into the next decade and beyond.

93JD 93V 93WE 93JS 93WI

The best I've tasted from this Château, the 2020 Château La Dauphine offers a terrific array of red and blue fruits as well as some classic Right Bank chalky minerality, medium to full-bodied richness, a pure, concentrated profile, and some background floral nuances. Drink this smoking good Fronsac over the coming decade.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

The 2020 La Dauphine is positively stellar. Soft and voluptuous, with fabulous depth, the 2020 offers up a heady mélange of blackberry jam, chocolate, licorice, spice, new leather and incense. This extroverted, inviting Fronsac is just gorgeous.

93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2023)

The 85% Merlot in this superrich wine is what has pushed up the alcohol. It does give a powerful, juicy character to the black-currant fruits. Against the wood and tannins, this wine has density and a full ripe character. Worth aging, this fine, dense wine will be ready from 2026. Organic.

93 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Dec 2022)

This offers lots of spices, chocolate and earthy notes to its dark-fruited character. Medium to full body. Ripe, velvety tannins and round texture. Shows depth and intensity with a compact structure and lingering finish. 85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc. From organically grown grapes. Try after 2024.

93 points, James Suckling (May 2023)

The 2020 de la Dauphine is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes barreling out with energetic blackberry pie and stewed plums notes followed by hints of potpourri, incense, and mossy tree bark. The full-bodied palate delivers impactful black fruit preserves layers with soft, rounded tannins and plenty of brightness on the finish.

2019 Chateau Laroque (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

One of the most enjoyable aspects of being a Bordeaux fan or collector is returning again and again to a lauded vintage to see how the wines are evolving. Of course, it's all the more enjoyable as Bordeaux offers you countless opportunities to do so without breaking the bank.

Where the book-end vintages of the acclaimed "trifecta" of 2018, 2019, and 2020 are built on power and longevity, the middle vintage has always stood out for its approachability and refinement, which is clearly apparent in these best-selling, fan-favorite value performers on offer today. Leading off, we have "a really fabulous Cantemerle that surely represents outstanding value" per Neal Martin, who notes "You have no excuse not to have this in your cellar." The 93-point Chasse-Spleen is another hidden gem from Moulis-en-Médoc's most well-known estate, while "the purity and finesse are really something" on the 2019 Pedesclaux Pauillac, according to Jeb Dunnuck. With the pedigree of a multiple 100-point grand vin behind it, the 2019 La Dame de Montrose is once again one of the great second-wine buys of the vintage, "a serious Dame de Montrose, with clear ageing potential," according to Jane Anson.

Best of all, each of these wines is showing out right now and starting to offer prime drinking for any Bordeaux lover who can't resist pulling a cork. And at these prices, you don't have to think twice about it!

95WI 95JD 95JA 94WA 94V 94JS 93D

The 2019 Laroque, composed of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, is deep garnet-purple in color. It sports cedary overtones to start off, giving way to notes of stewed black plums, blueberry pie, and Chinese five spice with hints of crushed rocks and unsmoked cigars. The full-bodied palate has a formidable backbone of firm tannins, with a lively line and muscular fruit, finishing long. This one is built for the longhaul, so give it another 3-5 years in cellar and drink it over the following 15 to 20-years+.

95+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (May 2023)

I continue to just love this château, which is located in one of the cooler terroirs in the appellation, sitting on pure limestone soils. Director David Suire continues to fine-tune every aspect of the estate and is the driving force behind the incredible quality we're seeing today. The 2019 Château Laroque is as classy as they come, with an incredible level of refinement and elegance. Ripe black cherries, blueberries, violets, white truffle, and cedar pencil all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with incredible tannins, perfect balance, and a great finish. It doesn't quite have the density of, say, Canon or Clos Fourtet, yet it doesn't lose a beat with regard to purity, finesse, and elegance. It's a gorgeous Saint-Emilion that readers will love to have in the cellar. It offers pleasure today yet won't hit the early stages of maturity for another 5-7 years and will have 20-25 years of overall longevity, probably more.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

So well put together, you feel the deft strokes of the winemaking layered on top of the terroir, and it's an impressive whole that combines power and restraint. Cassis and blueberry fruits, liquorice and espresso, mouth-watering finish but everything unfolding oh so slowly. No rush here. Yields of 43hl/ha. 3.44pH. Owned by the family Beaumartin, with winemaking from David Suire. An upscore from En Primeur.

95 points, Jane Anson (Jan 2022)

A terrific effort from an estate that was long one of Saint-Émilion's sleeping giants, the 2019 Laroque unwinds in the glass with aromas of cherries, licorice, loamy soil, rose petals and sweet tobacco. Medium to full-bodied, ample and layered, it's deep and concentrated, with succulent aids, powdery tannins and a seamless, integrated profile. It's well worth seeking out.

94 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Laroque captures all of the potential it showed as a young barrel sample. Succulent and racy to the core, with striking depth, Laroque is voluptuous, creamy and wonderfully inviting right out of the gate. Succulent dark cherry fruit, mocha, spice, new leather, licorice and menthol build into the voluptuous finish. Laroque balances fruit intensity with energy. It is certainly impressive in 2019. Tasted two times.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Blackcurrant, cherry and violet aromas follow through to a medium to full body with very well-integrated tannins that give a soft and creamy impression. Long and satisfying already, but needs another three or four years to come together. Try after 2023.

94 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

Ripe cherries and strawberries on the nose. This is juicy and bright with summer berry flavours, soft but present tannins and juicy acidity. Lightly structured, a softly sweet style, for earlier drinking with a lovely vein of stoney minerality that cleans the tongue and leaves a cool feel to the mouth. Elegant, well framed.

2023 Bedrock Zinfandel Old Vine (750ml)
Zinfandel from California
B-21 Top Recommendation

"The 2023 is such a classy offering ...What an absolute delight." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Established in 2007 by the son of Ravenswood founding winemaker Joel Peterson, Bedrock Wine Company's Morgan Twain-Peterson and long-time business partner Chris Cottrell craft their wines from a who's-who list of the region's most historic vineyards, sourcing the old vine Zinfandel from century-old sites throughout Sonoma and Contra Costa counties, including Peterson's own Bedrock Vineyard. Described by Antonio Galloni as "among the most pedigreed vineyard sites anywhere in the world," Bedrock was the first California vineyard to be replanted in 1888 following the devastation of phylloxera, boasting a Zinfandel-dominated field mix planted in volcanic rocks and cobbly loam soil and farmed organically by the Petersons without irrigation. Blending 85% Zinfandel with 7% Carignan, 4% Cinsault and small amounts of other varieties averaging 80 years of age and fermenting with native yeasts, Morgan aged the lush 2023 Bedrock Zinfandel Old Vine in a combination of French oak and Austrian oak puncheons and foudres with about 10% new, yielding a fresh and delicately spiced Zinfandel with layered fine tannins that's ready to enjoy and will continue to mature gracefully over the next few years.

Crafted by "one of the most talented winemakers of his generation" according to Galloni, the impressive, 93-point 2023 Bedrock Zinfandel Old Vine is blended from many of the iconic sites that go into Bedrock's single-vineyard Zins at a fraction of their price, delivering a transparent expression of rich, old-vine Zinfandel for an unbeatable value.

93JD 92WS 92JS 91V

The 2023 Zinfandel Old Vine was raised in 600-gallon foudre with a small proportion (8%) in new oak, and it’s roughly 90% Zinfandel along with an eclectic field mix. The nose opens to bright peppery spice, fresh cut flowers, and black raspberries, with deeper notes of fresh sanguine earth coming through. The palate is full-bodied yet restrained, with a detailed structure and length with a mountainous feel. It’s a great lens into the range they produce here at Bedrock and a tremendous value. Drink 2025-2032.

93 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Jul 2025)

Sleek and juicy, with fan-friendly cherry, raspberry, toasty spice and briar accents that glide on the zesty finish. Drink now through 2033. 8,000 cases made.

92 points, Tim Fish, Wine Spectator (Aug 2025)

An expressive, fruity and well-balanced wine that shows the rich berry aromas of the grape variety while keeping a slightly tangy, lightly tannic texture that’s refreshing. Raspberries, red cherries, red plums and hints of sage and orange peel. Made from vines with an average age of 80 years. Drink now.

92 points, Jim Gordon, James Suckling (Mar 2025)

The 2023 Zinfandel Old Vine is a very pretty wine. Floral, spice-inflected and lifted, the 2023 is such a classy offering. In this vintage, the Old Vine Zinfandel is incredibly varietal. Even so, it is sensual, silky and wonderfully inviting. The blend is built on a core of fruit from Sodini, Bedrock, Teldeschi and Evangelho, with smaller bits from several other properties in the portfolio. Most of the wine is aged in neutral vessels, with a well-judged touch of spice from some new oak that adds flair. What an absolute delight.

The 2022 La Grand Comtadine Heritiers Cheron-Misset Côtes-du-Rhône (a mouthful for sure) continues this wine's track record as an unbeatable value stunner for B-21. After tasting this recent vintage at Wine Paris, we ordered a sizeable parcel direct from winemaker Yves Cheron's cellar. Rarely available outside the region, it's a superb everyday value to stock up on and enjoy without hesitation from an appealing Southern Rhône vintage.

Drawn to the untapped potential of the Southern Rhône's smaller and lesser known appellations over fifty years ago, third-generation Burgundy grower Denis Cheron purchased a winemaking facility along with two hectares of vineyards in Vacqueyras called La Grand Comtadine in the 1960s, vinifying wines for local growers. Building relationships in the area over the next two decades, Denis was given the opportunity to purchase the Grand Montmirail in Gigondas when the heirless owner decided to retire, and along with his son Yves, they began producing wine under their own label in the 1980s. Expanding the family's holdings and establishing long-term contracts with local growers since joining his father in 1983, winemaker Yves Cheron sourced the elegantly structured, Grenache-based 2022 La Grand Comtadine Heritiers Cheron-Misset Côtes-du-Rhône from 30 hectares of sustainably farmed, low-yielding vines, aging it in concrete tanks to preserve the fresh fruit flavors and refreshing, energetic acidity with plenty of depth to savor over the next five or so years.

Beautifully balancing bold fruit flavors with vibrant acidity and polished tannins, the succulent and silky-textured 2022 La Grand Comtadine Heritiers Cheron-Misset is delicious alone and easily pairs with food, a solid value CdR that fans of easy-drinking Southern Rhône reds will find themselves reaching for again and again.

Yves Cheron’s workhorse Côtes-du-Rhône best-seller is every bit as good as previous vintages and maybe better. The 2022 displays the ripeness of the vintage perfectly, with concentrated red fruits that quickly verge toward the darker side of black cherry and elderberry. Hot stones add an earthy edge to nose, with new leather and Chinese five spice in the background. The medium-full palate is well balanced with ripe, pliant tannins and underlying acidity. Primary fruit flavors demonstrate depth and density, while the wine’s spicy edge gives great lift to the finish along with fresh herbs de Provençal and a faint hint of cigar wrap. This wine just delivers. That’s all there is to it.

2022 Antinori Tenuta Guado al Tasso Cont'Ugo (750ml)
Merlot from Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

"This is a magical property. Of late, the wines have been pretty magical too." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

While Tignanello gets all (or almost all) the attention in the Marchesi Antinori stable, the Guado al Tasso wines have started to gain some serious traction of their own among Italian fans, and they now stand apart from their more famous sibling in all the right ways. Indeed, recent vintages have seen the estate hit new benchmarks in quality and acclaim, something that continues in this trio of new releases.

The 2023 Il Bruciato stands out as one of the Tuscany's leading value buys once again, capturing the power of the warm vintage while retaining ample freshness to make it accessible even today. This JD93 blend of Bordeaux varietals plus Syrah offers up a thoroughly modern profile with tons of broad, crowd-pleasing appeal and a price to match.

The Super Tuscan blends are the attention-getters in the Antinori portfolio, but the 2022 Cont' Ugo Merlot is an insider's savvy buy. We know, we know ... Merlot? Yes, Merlot. It's one of the most intriguing and dynamic varietals in Tuscany today. The coastal climate and soils are ideally suited to this Bordeaux transplant, but the result is never just an imitation of the Right Bank style. Instead, Merlot takes on its own singular Tuscan character that lends a new and vibrant perspective to the grape and the category as a whole, and the 94-point 2022 Cont' Ugo is a prime example.

Finally, the latest vintage of Guado al Tasso shows the unmatched pedigree of Antinori, from the sterling quality of the fruit, to the clear terroir signatures, to the precise and meticulous winemaking, which really was deciding factor in the 2022 vintage. As Monica Larner of Wine Advocate declares in her 96-point review, "The wine is velvety and richly textured at its core, but it is also seamless with very pleasurable sweetness." Everything about the 2022 is expertly composed and in its proper place, earning it three rock-solid, 96-point reviews from Italy's leading critics. For those who follow the Italian collectible scene, especially the Super Tuscan category, you'll no doubt be making room in the cellar for this exceptional expression from one of Italy's most iconic estates.

Distinctly fruity, this red features black cherry, blackberry, plum, licorice, cedar and oak spice aromas and flavors. A supple version, with terrific balance and a long aftertaste. Shows just enough grip to lend serious weight. Merlot. Drink now through 2032. 600 cases imported.

94 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Oct 2024)

This is a wonderfully polished and creamy red. Notes of chocolate biscuits, dark plums, cloves and dark cherries on the nose, as well as some graphite, followed by a full-bodied, plush and supple palate. Merlot. Drink now or hold.

2019 Chateau Rol Valentin (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

94V 92JD 92JS

The 2019 Rol Valentin showed extremely well from barrel. In bottle, it has retained a gorgeous, pure bouquet of blackberry, spicebox, violet and incense aromas, intense but not overpowering, and the oak neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, yet there is backbone and grip. Focused and velvety-smooth, this is an utterly delicious Rol Valentin, one of the finest I have tasted in recent years.

94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Feb 2022)

This estate continues to make outstanding wines, and their 2019 Château Rol Valentin sports a deep ruby/plum color to go with beautiful notes of red plums, darker cherries, Asian spices, graphite, and dried herbs. Medium-bodied on the palate, it's beautifully balanced, has good mid-palate density, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Beautifully done, it should have 15+ years of prime drinking.

92 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

This has aromas of blackberries, toasted bark, pine cones and spice box. It’s medium-bodied with firm, tight tannins. Some citrus peel on the structured and chewy finish. Better after 2024.

2021 Massolino Barbaresco (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

"Massolino is another winery that has been on a roll of late. These new releases are stellar." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

One of Piedmont's leading lights, Massolino is a perennial standout among Piedmont fans for their super-refined, elegant house style. From the village wines to the single-cru expressions, you'll find captivating profiles that have won critical accolades year in and year out. We just sourced a must-see parcel of some of the estate's finest recent releases, showcasing the impeccable excellence that characterizes every bottle of Massolino.

Leading off is the 2021 village Barbaresco, a blend from the Albesani, Starderi, and Serraboella crus. As Galloni explains, "Readers will find a super-classic Barbaresco [with] lifted aromatics, mid-weight structure and persistent yet fine tannins." The triple 95-point, "very impressive and detailed" 2021 Albesani Barbaresco takes things up a notch - "a super-classic wine that ... possesses notable structure and the understated depth that is common of Barbaresco" according to Galloni.

Finally, Piedmont fans shouldn't overlook the other varietal gems in the Massolino stable, highlighted by their lovely, utterly charming 2023 Dolcetto and the 93-point 2021 Barbera Gisep, a blend of three parcels within the Barolo DOCG designation with more serious pedigree than is typically found in this "humble" Piedmont varietal. There's no doubt that Massolino should be on every Piedmont lover's short list, and these latest releases show one of the region's great estates at the top of their game.

94WA 94WS 93JD 93V 92JS

The Massolino 2021 Barbaresco (in the bottle with the white label for the non-cru selections) has a lovely bouquet that admittedly leans toward the riper side of the Nebbiolo spectrum with mineral notes, redcurrant and dried flower. The wine feels fresh and tart on the palate, and you do get extra textural heft and fiber in this vintage. This is a blend of fruit from Serraboella, Albesani and Starderi (with 24,000 bottles created).

94 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jan 2025)

Aromas and flavors of cherry, strawberry, rose, wet hay and white pepper combine with a firm structure and vibrant acidity in this expressive, complex red, which is harmonious and long on the fruit- and savory-tinged aftertaste. Best from 2026 through 2043. 2,100 cases made, 600 cases imported.

94 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Dec 2024)

The dark ruby/magenta 2021 Barbaresco is highly expressive on opening, with notes of crushed black raspberries, candied flowers, sweet sage, and wet stone. Medium-bodied, it fills the palate up front with a rounded feel, ripe tannins, and fresh acidity, and it has a nice lift of citrus on the finish. It has good length for an entry wine and will benefit from another 6-12 months in bottle. Drink 2025-2035.

93 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2024)

The 2021 Barbaresco is a blend from parcels in Albesani, Serraboella and Starderi. Gracious and nuanced, the 2021 offers up hints of crushed flowers, orange peel, mint, sweet red berry fruit and spice. Readers will find a super-classic Barbaresco. Lifted aromatics, mid-weight structure and persistent yet fine tannins give the wine its shape. This is beautifully done.

93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2024)

Bright cinnamon and earthy strawberry aromas with violets and dried cherries. Firm, with lifted acidity, dusty yet ripe tannins, a chewy mid-palate and ripe fruit on the finish. Approachable Barbaresco but will age nicely, too. Drink or hold.

2022 Domaine Jessiaume Bourgogne Rouge Les Perrieres (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Bourgogne, Burgundy, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Value and Burgundy, together in the same sentence? Yes, indeed. We've spent the past six months curating an exceptional roster of overperforming gems that deliver all the class and terroir expression that Burgundy fans crave, while still coming in at surprisingly affordable pricing.

Our direct-import portfolio is at the heart of this selection, starting with the 2023 Chavy-Chouet Bourgogne Blanc Les Femelottes, a compelling entry-level charmer that boasts great pedigree, as it hails from a 3-hectare parcel of high-density plantings bordering the official Puligny appellation. Refined and expressive, it's a superb introduction to a rising-star domaine in the Cote d'Or and a surefire winner for anyone who's looking for true white Burgundy terroir at a bargain price. In a similar vein, Vincent Girardin's 2023 Cuvée St-Vincent Bourgogne Chardonnay is, in fact, made mostly from declassified Meursault vines, with a small balance of Puligny and Chassagne fruit rounding out the composition, so there's no question where the wine derives its outsized character. B-21 Buyer Andrew Kitz explains, "We came across a number of great values on our last trip to Burgundy, but nothing held a candle to this one when it came to Chardonnays in this price tier."

Moving to the reds, you'll find an incredible single-vineyard Coteaux Bourguignon from a fantastic, family-run Gevrey domaine, Marchard-Grillot. The 2023 Marchand-Grillot En Bollery comes from a plot that sits against the east wall of the Clos de Vougeot, and it's "essentially every bit as good as many village crus from the Côte de Nuits, at a mere fraction of the price," according to Andrew. Next up, the 2022 Jessiaume Bourgogne Rouge Les Perrieres is Santenay village pedigree in all but official designation. A northeast-facing parcel of 60-year-old vines, it excels in sunny years like 2022, producing a wine that reflects not only the showstopping fruit concentration of the vintage but also the vivid freshness and definition of slightly cooler micro-climate. "This 2022 easily gives many village crus a run for their money, and it's an instant contender for top Pinot value in the store."

Finally, we have the 2023 Rion Cote-de-Nuits Village Rouge, which "was impressive enough to have us fully convinced that Rion takes things seriously at every level of their line-up." With amplified depth of fruit and structural integrity, it checks every box that we're looking for in red Burgs at this price point – terroir signature, purity, balance, immediate charm, and enough backbone to make it an easy choice for the cellar.

As you can see, we've done our digging, and whether you're looking for an easy pick to enjoy today, or something you can stock up on and come back to over and over again for a few years, there's a surefire winner or three in this list for you.

90AK

Our visit to the domaine in November confirmed without doubt that winemaker William Waterkyn is overseeing an impressive renaissance at this venerable Santenay address, and this spectacular Bourgogne Rouge value stunner was the unanimous surprise find of our trip. Made entirely from a single monopole on the Santenay appellation boundary, the 2022 Les Perrieres is a crystal-clear example of terroir and vintage. It boasts all the vibrant freshness of a northeast-facing parcel, but the 60-year-old vines and the radiant 2022 growing season give it admirable, concentrated cherry and raspberry notes, while a touch of spice contrasts beautifully against a finish with detailed stony inflections. This 2022 easily gives many village crus a run for their money, and it’s an instant contender for top Pinot value in the store.

Domaine Durieu has been one of our most successful and enduring direct-import relationships over the past several years, with the flagship Cuvée Lucile Avril reaching all-time best seller status at B-21. We recently tasted the 2022 with François Durieu earlier this year, and it more than met our expectations. Now, a brand new, glowing 97-point review from James Suckling's senior Rhône critic puts the exclamation point on another stunning rendition that picks up right where Durieu's previous showstoppers left off.

"A great masterpiece of elegance and finesse." - Stuart Pigott, JamesSuckling.com

"With medium to full body, a beautifully textured mouthfeel, and ripe tannins ... [it] brings a more classic, broad, textured profile," according to Jeb Dunnuck. In other words, the 2022 Lucile Avril is a crystal clear expression of Durieu's signature winemaking style, with an emphasis on balance and freshness (he uses no oak on any of his cuvées). It bears repeating, this wine is always one of our top-selling items in the category, so our legions of Durieu fans are in for a true classic that is, once again, one of the sharpest buys of the vintage at our domaine-direct pricing.

A great masterpiece of elegance and finesse, with a cornucopia of wild herb, dried flower and red berry aromas. Huge concentration and power, but it still moves very gracefully on the full-bodied palate. A stunningly long, pure and refined finish that doesn’t want to let go. Drink or hold.

Is there a more consistently excellent estate in California than Ridge Vineyards? You'd be hard-pressed to make an argument otherwise. Decades of category-defining class and substance have resulted in untold numbers of awards and accolades, so it's no surprise to see them once again at the head of the class in this set of new arrivals.

One of the most beloved wines in the Ridge stable, the Lytton Springs is a classic California old-vine field blend, based on ZInfandel that has come to set the standard for the style over decades of uninterrupted success. From Ridge's estate vineyard in the Dry Creek Valley that includes centenarian Zinfandel vines, the "fabulous" 2021 Lytton Springs is "bright and vibrant to its core" according to Galloni's 95-point review, but the wine truly hits its a new level in the 2023 rendition, due not only to its recent #3 ranking on Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2025, but also to a towering 98 points from Jeb Dunnuck's new California critic, Virginie Boone.

Of course, Ridge is also renowned for delivering serious bang for the buck throughout their extensive range, and two perennial favorites are the 2020 Lytton Estate Petite Sirah and the 2023 Three Valleys. The former is a 95-point powerhouse that Antonio Galloni calls "superb ... deep and resonant." The sub-$25, double 93-point Three Valleys is a true QPR star, "generous and robust yet retaining a sense of polish." It's a no-brainer choice for an everyday red, because it delivers a level or two above that tier, yet it can be easily stacked by the case at a bargain price.

Blending 76% Zinfandel, 14% Petite Sirah, 7% Carignane, 2% Alicante Bouschet and 1% Mataro from an estate vineyard in Dry Creek Valley purchased in 1972, the 2023 Zinfandel Lytton Springs exhibits initial chewiness that leads to fine tannins, with a good heft and underlying acidity. Well-woven oak supports a moderately ripe, medium-bodied frame of structured elegance, aged in 100% air-dried American oak. Enjoy now through 2033.

98 points, Virginie Boone, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2025)

A much cooler growing season delayed the start of harvest by about a month, resulting in a wine with greater restraint than the previous vintage. The 2023 is a more elegant take on this wine, with less fruit intensity, but still unmistakably Ridge. Fresh aromas of herbs from a bouquet garni mix with earthy tones and subtle sweet notes from baking spices. The fruit profile oscillates between ripe red and black berries, with a touch of plums and ripe cherries. Tannins are firm yet polished, and there's a soft creaminess to the palate. A wine that is balanced and quite enjoyable now, with many years to evolve in the bottle.

96 points, Ana Carolina Quintela, Decanter (Apr 2025)

Deeply structured and full of tension, this polished red displays a distinctive personality, offering bold blackberry flavors accented with savory anise, black pepper and dark Asian spices. Ends with big but refined tannins. Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignane, Alicante Bouschet and Mataro. Drink now through 2035. 11,000 cases made.

95 points, Tim Fish, Wine Spectator (Aug 2025)

#3 - Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2025

The 2023 Lytton Springs is powerfully aromatic and expressive from the jump. It explodes from the glass with dark blue fruit, lavender and blood orange peel, framed by mocha-like richness and a wave of exotic spice. The texture is pure silk, wrapping the palate with seamless contours and lifted freshness courtesy of the cool growing season. A blend of 76% Zinfandel, 14% Petite Sirah, 7% Carignane, 2% Alicante Bouschet and 1% Mataro, the 2023 shows remarkable persistence and poise. If you know Lytton, you know these wines can age for decades—this one is clearly built for the long haul.

95 points, Billy Norris, Vinous (Oct 2025)

A lovely release with lots of freshness from a cooler vintage. Bright and perfumed aromas of red cherries, raspberry coulis, confit plums, licorice and spice. The palate is full-bodied with finely tuned tannins and vibrant, crunchy acidity.

It’s especially elegant and expressive this year, offering pure aromas of black cherry, blueberry, damp earth, sage, violet and cast iron. The full-bodied palate features concentrated, fragrant flavors. It’s framed by fine, chalky tannins and vibrant acidity and has a long finish replete with soaring floral perfume. Amazing aromas of black figs, black pepper and star anise grab attention with the first whiff, before dense, layered blackberries, dark chocolate and espresso flavors coat the palate. Firm, thick tannins and a superdark color are typical of the grape variety, and bode well for further aging. Best from 2027–2040.

The 2020 Petite Sirah Lytton Estate is superb, and also the highlight of the 2020s at Ridge. Deep and resonant in the glass, the 2020 impresses with its balance, something that was very hard to achieve in 2020. The new red blend 2020 Alma Contador is going to be sold mostly through the négociants from Bordeaux. It was produced with grapes from three vineyards in San Vicente de la Sonsierra at different altitudes and is a blend of Tempranillo with 8% Garnacha with limited yields because of mildew. It matured in new French barriques for 20 months. He wanted a more classical image and perhaps a more classical profile of wine. It's perfumed and floral, with notes of aromatic herbs, a little balsamic and quite showy, with very fine tannins and freshness, as he used more grapes from the higher-altitude zones. It's powerful and elegant, and in a way it reminds me of the style of the initial vintages of La Cueva de Contador; it's clean and elegant. It's 14.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.55. It's very young but still drinkable, as the quality of the tannins is very good. I think this is the one wine I'd buy from their portfolio if I could only buy one. It transported me to the wines from the early 2000s. 10,000 bottles produced.

Producing a range of "well-made and well-priced cuvees" according to Vinous critic Neal Martin, these top scoring Red Burgundy selections from Domaine Jessiaume deliver outstanding value among the region's ever rising prices, an age worthy array from an under the radar appellation at best on the market pricing for savvy collectors to stock the cellar.

Established at the entrance of the tiny village of Santenay in 1850, Domaine Jessiaume crafts its small production Burgundy wines ranging from village level to 1er Cru from 15 hectares of organically farmed vineyards under the ownership of French researcher Dr. Jean-Francois Le Bigot since 2020, employing a low intervention approach including fermenting the grapes with indigenous yeasts and limiting the use of new French oak to preserve the freshness of the fruit. From Santenay's top 1er Cru and named for its unique gravelly soils, Jasper Morris describes the flagship 94 pt. 2022 Domaine Jessiaume Santenay Les Gravieres 1er Cru as "busting with energy without sacrificing finesse," its rich, spiced fruit layered with lush tannins and bright acidity on "an impeccable finish."

Described by Inside Burgundy's Jasper Morris as "wines of significant refinement," these Domaine Jessiaume selections deliver significant value as well, offering Burgundy lovers and collectors a rare opportunity to stock up by the case at a price that doesn't break the bank.

96D 95JS 94JM

William Waterkeyn at Jessiaume has set aside five barrels of Gravières from his oldest vines (80-years-old) to produce this super-cuvée. The winemaking is the same, except there is slightly more new wood (two barrels out of five). The fruit is deep and dark, with notes of cassis and mulberry and hints of leather, bay leaf, wood smoke and spice from the oak. The full body is amply supported by the firm, slightly rugged tannins and surprising freshness to draw this to a persistent finish. Age this for five years before opening; it should last at least a further 20.

96 points, Charles Curtis, Decanter (Nov 2023)

Very fine and super-elegant, this magnificent Santenay 1er Cru has underplayed structure and concentration. Bold yet soft tannins fill the medium- to full-bodied palate. Very long, dark finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

95 points, Stuart Pigott, James Suckling (Jul 2024)

A proportion, about a third, of the oldest vines (90ish) are reserved for this cuvée, though some are also kept for the regular. The colour is darker, and the bouquet more rugged, less sensual. No criticism intended, this is designed as a grand vin de garde. There is a much more substantial structure, slightly more acidity as well as tannins, with a wealth of luxurious bit not over opulent fruit in between. Impressive. Drink from 2030-2036.

"Since arriving in 2009, Marjolaine de Coninck has resurrected this estate, and the wines now play with the top in the appellation."- Jeb Dunnuck

Bordeaux remains arguably the greatest hotbed of collectible value in the world of fine wine, and at the forefront of that trend the past decade has been Margaux's Chateau Labegorce. Since 2015, this dynamic estate has been outpacing its station in the quality and price heirarchies, delivering exceptional, cellar-worthy character and style at prices that allow Bordeaux collectors of all stripes to line their cellars.

Today's mini-vertical showcases the past decade at this insider's favorite in all its glory, with stellar acclaimed renditions from five benchmark vintages. Consistent praise has followed the 2016 sinceen primeur, "afabulously textured Margaux" that shines in a modern classic vintage, while the 2018 "exudes elegance and class" according to Dunnuck. The 2019 and 2020 renditions round out the "trifecta" in fine form, each vintage expressing the full character of this lauded trio. Finally, the double 95-point 2022 just confirms that the estate is here to day among the elite of the appellation, a resounding triumph that still maintains the brilliant value this dynamic property has come to symbolize among Bordeaux's savviest collectors.

Fairly tannic but super cool and fresh too with cola and blueberry nuanced. Chewy but really juicy, an approachable fun and easy wine still with bite, tang, juiciness and tannic density. Very appealing still with bite. Not as dense and weight as some, but wow there's a lot to like; gorgeous acidity, textured and well defined tannins, lovely punchy fruit and a long length. Delicious, still with a minty, graphite and clove lift on the finish. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 3.6pH. Ageing in 40% new oak. Harvest 12 September 12 - 5 October. Tasted twice and loved it both times.

95 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Apr 2023)

Very different in shape and feel than sibling Tour de Mons, still lots of spice, more cardamon, cloves and grilled sandalwood. There is density and concentration, and clear tannic heft, one block stacking up along the next, closing in on the palate, showing astringency and a huge future ahead of it. Clear eucalyptus, black pepper, drawing the flavours out through the palate. Harvest September 12 to October 5. 3.6ph. Marjolaine de Coninck CEO and technical director. The blend given is planted, not as per final wine, allowing slight evolution over ageing, so these are ones to check back in on when in bottle. Mid silver. 40% new oak.

93 points, Jane Anson (May 2023)

This is suave, with alder smoke–infused blackberry and black cherry compote flavors carried by a note of warm humus and backed by echoing violet and iris notes on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2026 through 2036. 15,000 cases made.

NV Agrapart Terroirs Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Grand Cru (1.5L)
Sparkling from Avize, Champagne, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Crafted by artisan producer and B-21 favorite Pascal Agrapart in the chalky Cote des Blancs, Champagne Agrapart has enjoyed an under the radar reputation, but with the release of these highly rated 2025 cuvees, that's about to change. From one of the top grower-producers in the region, these selections from Agrapart offer a rare taste of meticulously crafted, terroir-driven Champagne at a remarkable value that's bound to sell out in a flash.

Now run by the fourth consecutive generation, Agrapart ranks at the top echelons of Champagne, earning a 3-star rating in the Revue de Vin du France alongside only 7 other houses, including Krug. Planted almost entirely with Chardonnay with a few small plots of Pinot Noir, the ten-hectare Agrapart Domaine comprises more than 70 small parcels predominantly in the Grand Cru villages of Avize, Cramant, Oiry, and Oger with a few Premier Cru plots on the Cote de Blancs, boasting low yielding vines averaging over 40 years of age with the oldest over 70 years. Taking the reins of his family's historic estate in Avize over four decades ago, Pascal works the soils manually while employing organic practices, tilling with horses to ensure his soils do not get compacted (one of his parcels is worked by and named for his horse Venus). Fermenting the base wines exclusively with native yeasts which he believes is critical to expressing the terroir, Pascal employs a mix of older barrels dependent on the cuvee and longer than required bottle aging on the lees, yielding gorgeous, pure fruit impeccably balanced with chalky minerality that finishes long, each cuvee uniquely identified with a different colored plaque (i.e., the round metal disk on top of the cork).

95JS 94V

Very intense minerality dominates in this blend, with pure aromas of chalk, subtle flowers, lemons and pastry. Medium-bodied, it shows zesty acidity and a lean yet silky palate that’s elegant and delicate. Based on the 2020 and 2021 harvest. Disgorged in April 2025. Drink now.

95 points, James Suckling (Oct 2025)

The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Terroirs Grand Cru is unusual in that it is a blend of three vintages (2021, 2020 and 2019) instead of the more typical two, because of very low yields in 2021. There's real density and power here, but not at the expense of Cotes des Blancs citrus, floral and mineral character. As always, the Terroirs is a blend of parcels in Avize, Oger, Cramant and Oiry, all Grand Crus. The blend is 20% 2021 and 80% split between 2020 and 2019. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: March 2025; multiple disgorgements throughout the year.

2023 Domaine de l'Amandine Cotes du Rhone Villages Seguret (750ml)
Syrah from Côtes du Rhône Villages, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

Domaine de l'Amandine's Mathilde Suter and her father have an enviable knack for bringing out the absolute best of the vines in their wines, and yet somehow they do it while keeping their prices almost unbelievably affordable. Indeed, these are some of the greatest buys in the appellation. The 2023 Seguret, a Syrah-dominant blend, offers everything that makes Seguret such a hotbed of savvy picks with unbeatable quality-to-price ratio.

"Quite possibly our direct-import Rhône value of the year." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Rhône Buyer

The sandy, limestone slopes of the estate's vineyards bring out the most charming qualities of each varietal, with the depth of the Syrah forming a sturdy core that's accented by brighter notes from the Grenache component, all the with vibrant energy of the vintage. "I have loved previous vintages of this exceptional Rhône overachiever in the past, and when I got reacquainted with it at this year’s WineParis/Vinexpo, I was thrilled to find that it’s as good as it’s ever been in the 2023 vintage," notes Andrew. The wine's charming aromatics are full-on Rhône in every sense, while the palate "is deeper and more structured than you’d expect at this price point," suggesting that the 2023 Seguret could be your new house red for years to come if you stock up at our must see, case-buy price.

Savvy, keen-eyed bargain hunters should also take serious interest in the 2022 La Montagne, a Grenache-based blend from the domaine's clay-limestone terraces. Brighter in style yet also more structured than the 2023 Seguret, the 2022 La Montagne offers "a complete and harmonious Southern Rhône profile that can compete with many wines at twice its price." Finally, do not miss the "extraordinarily pretty yet understated" 2024 Seguret Blanc Bel Air, a blend of Roussanne, Marsanne, and Viognier that's one of the more impressive 2024 white Rhônes we've come across in its price point.

We're thrilled to be back on our game with Amandine after a lengthy hiatus, and this trio of new, in-stock arrivals are sure to leave our legions of Rhône fans with huge smiles on their faces from the standout style and incredible value to be found from this under-the-radar gem of a domaine.

92AK

I have loved previous vintages of this exceptional Rhône overachiever in the past, and when I got reacquainted with it at this year’s WineParis/Vinexpo, I was thrilled to find that it’s as good as it’s ever been in the 2023 vintage. Strikingly fresh on the nose, it’s full of ripe red fruits with subtle darker shades around the edges. Raspberries and cherries, with hints of mulberry in the background. Telltale garrigue aromatics are in full swing, with gentle spices as a nice counter. The palate is deeper and more structured than you’d expect at this price point, which goes to prove once again how much bang for the buck you can find in Seguret. The fruit is upfront but still a bit primary, so this should get even more interesting with another year or two in bottle. It’s ripe but not plush, and there’s real substance here that carries to a textured finish inflected with white pepper and hot stones. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this still going strong at ten years old if stored in a cool cellar. Quite possibly our direct-import Rhône value of the year.

"Château Léoville Las Cases is one of the greatest and most consistent estates of Bordeaux..."

- William Kelley, Wine Advocate

Here's a rare opportunity to secure a trove of all-time great library vintages from the legendary Château Léoville Las-Cases, long considered 'first among the Super-Seconds' of Bordeaux with a reputation for First Growth quality. Now offered at best-in-market pricing, these monumental classics will evolve for decades to come, some already aged 40 years in pristine cellar conditions, all garnering 95-point ratings or higher, including multiple 100-point trophies.

Bordering First Growth Latour on the northern end of St-Julien overlooking the Gironde and managed by the Delon family since the late 19th century, the 98 hectares of Las Cases vineyards are planted in a single block encompassing a mosaic of terroirs, surrounded by walls known as the Grand Clos. In other words, it's the ideal terroir for producing immortal claret. Leading with the timeless classicism of the 1990, this vertical comprises the very pinnacle of Las Cases in the modern era. The most coveted vintages of the 21st century, including perfect renditions from 2010, 2016, and 2018, highlight the undeniable greatness of the estate's contemporary track record.

These are all outstanding choices that stand tall next to their First Growth neighbor at a fraction of the price, offering the perfect opportunity to take any world-class collection to the next level. Echoing a sports analogy, the Léoville-Las Cases bench is deep, and with only homerun hitters in the rotation, any and all of them are guaranteed to knock it out of the park.

100WE 99WS 99JS

A hugely powerful wine, full of dark, brooding tannins. It’s a wine for seriously long-term aging, a sculptural vision of classic Bordeaux structure with with classy, ripe blackberry fruits. It has fresh acidity and an immense full-bodied character, cut through with mineral acidity. A great wine, with great potential.

100 points, Wine Enthusiast (May 2013)

Stunning and pure from the get-go, with intense cassis and blackberry fruit. Ultimately takes a slightly austere approach, with a wrought-iron structure driving along while pastis, black tea, licorice snap and asphalt notes course underneath. Long and loaded with grip, this remains remarkably fine-grained. A very chiseled Cabernet that is wonderfully precise and incredibly long. Best from 2020 through 2040.

99 points, Wine Spectator (Mar 2013)

The aromas to this wine have a beautiful purity of raspberries, blueberries, currants, and flowers that follow to a a full body, with super integrated tannins that are like the finest silk in texture. It shows elegant and pretty fruit character and a reserve and finesse of such great years as 1989 and 1995. The bright strong acidity gives a crunchy and creamy texture. This has a tiny bit more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend than 2009. Give it at least six to eight years of bottle age.

2022 Antinori Tenuta Guado al Tasso (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy

The Marchesi Antinori 2022 Bolgheri Superiore Guado al Tasso (a blend of 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Cabernet Franc and 25% Merlot) is an unexpected wine. I was prepared for more overt ripeness but instead was greeted by a delightful mineral note of graphite or lead pencil that gives much needed contouring to this full-bodied Tuscan red. The wine is velvety and richly textured at its core, but it is also seamless with very pleasurable sweetness. All new oak adds hints of vanilla and spice. If you follow this wine, you'll notice that the percentage of Cabernet Franc has been increasing in tiny notches over the years. "Blending is key to achieving balance in a vintage like this," says Marchesi Antinori Managing Director Renzo Cotarella. Production this vintage is 140,000 bottles.

96 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Feb 2025)

The 2022 Guado Al Tasso has a saturated purple/magenta color and is 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Merlot. The nose shows off ripe primary fruit of fresh blueberries, blackberries, leather, violets, wet stone, and Mediterranean herbs. Full-bodied, it fills the palate but remains fresh and even, with plush, ripe tannins, delicate warming spice, and a long finish. While it has the richness and ripe fruit one comes to expect from this estate, it offers exceptional refinement as well. Drink 2027-2050. 138,480 bottles produced.

96 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2025)

A complex and restrained wine with classic aromas of straw, cassis and carob and a touch of leaves. The palate is polished and full-bodied with smooth, refined tannins. Chewy in the finish, with refreshing acidity and a toasty Mediterranean aftertaste. Drinkable now, but best in two or three years.

96 points, James Suckling (May 2025)

The 2022 Guado al Tasso is laced with hints of plum, espresso, nutmeg, licorice, incense, lavender and dried herbs. Medium in body, with fine persistence and tons of class, Guado al Tasso has a lot to offer. There is a bit of tightness that is a reminder of the challenges of the growing season. A burst of dark fruit, exotic spice and sweet spice punctuates the finale. This is a terrific wine for the year. The blend is 44% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Cabernet Franc and 25% Merlot. Late-season September rains were especially penalizing for Cabernet Sauvignon, hence the greater presence of Cabernet Franc and Merlot in the blend.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2025)

Offering a gorgeous aromatic profile of thyme, mint, sage and menthol with ripe dark berries, this is a superb Guado al Tasso. A fresh mouthful of cool and juicy black and blue fruits is emphasised by a streak of salinity before a return of those wonderful Mediterranean herbs. "I think 2022 in this moment is more ready than 2021," says Marco Ferrarese, winemaker and estate director.

The Avril family, their renowned parcels planted adjacent to the ruins of the old papal towers in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, have been consistently bottling brilliant wines for decades. Among my very favorites – my personal collection spans multiple vintages – these are wines of unmistakable breed and character; a complete joy to experience. Originally established in the 18th century, their primary parcel is augmented by seventeen old vine plots throughout the appellation, adding further dimension to a wine already at the very highest levels of quality. Over the last few vintages, my notes indicate ever improved character. Paul-Vincent has bottled even more in a long line of rock stars. Draconian selections followed daily passes through each of his parcels, painstakingly clipping each vine for nothing but the very finest berries.

98D 97WS 96WA 96JD 96V

"A very Clos des Papes vintage," says Vincent Avril, and I know what he means - a vintage that naturally delivers the kind of fresh, elegant wines that this estate is famous for. A tasting of several foudres point to a wine with natural, easy balance. The Mourvèdre is excellent here this year, and adds great depth to the fresh and delightful Grenache that has notes of black tea, black cherry and iron. Elegant and very fine.

98 points, Matt Walls, Decanter (Sep 2021)

Beguiling, with a plume of black tea and incense leading off, followed by warmed black cherry reduction, cassis, melted black licorice, warm earth and singed tobacco and garrigue accents. Offers breadth and depth with a seamless feel, capped by a subtle mineral edge that lingers lengthily amid the beautiful fruit. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2024 through 2040.

97 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Nov 2022)

I last reported on the 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape prior to bottling, so let me update readers here. It's a terrific, red-fruited version of Clos des Papes, with raspberry and cherry notes accented by hints of black olive and allspice. Full-bodied, taut and firmly structured, with a long, concentrated finish, this is a vintage that should reward cellaring.

96+ points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (Sep 2023)

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape showed brilliantly and is certainly one of the stars in the vintage. Based on 55% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre, and the rest Syrah and other permitted varieties, it shines for its elegance and purity, offering a wonderful core of red and black fruits, medium to full body, silky, incredibly polished tannins, flawless balance, and already complex notes of flowers, sappy garrigue, Provençal spice. It has the estate's incredible ability to bring wonderful intensity and richness while staying graceful and seamless. It reminds me slightly of the 2012, possibly the 2006, and while it already offers pleasure, it will evolve for 20+ years in cold cellars.

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2022)

Made with the usual blend of 55% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, Cinsaut and other permitted varieties, the 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape checks in at 15.5% alcohol. It bursts with pungent aromas of red cherry, raspberry, strawberry, blueberry, black plum, thyme, black pepper and is distinctively spicy. Full-bodied and expressive, wrapped in an intricate web of velvety tannins and balanced by lively acids, it is a majestic Clos des Papes.

"...yet another stunning collection." - Anne Krebiehl, Vinous

For Riesling fans, there are few names that hold a candle to Dönnhoff, and this set from the exceptional 2023 vintage only adds to their lofty reputation and track record. One of the most consistently excellent estates in the world, they need little introduction to collectors of reference-point Riesling. At every level of the prädikat scale, they've hit one homerun after another.

Starting with the Kabinetten, led by the "stunningly elegant and vibrant" JS96 Leistenberg, we see the crystalline purity and class that defines all of Dönnhoff's wines. Of course, the flagship Hermannshöhle Spätlese remains the estate's most famous and coveted expression, and in 2023 it's "serene, zesty, tender, yet so very serious ... glorious in its lightness and disarming in its elegance," a 99-point showstopper that will stand with the finest vintages of this perennial collectible all-star. In the Auslese category, along with the "ravishing beauty" of the 99-point Hermannshöhle, Dönnhoff's Brücke monopole also produced a near-perfect, "very radical wine with gigantic concentration of cool tropical fruit and mineral acidity."

The crown jewels, of course, are the estate's singular GGs, led by two utterly perfect expressions from Hermannshöhle and Dellchen. While this pair will be among Germany's most exquisite and coveted dry wines of the vintage, collectors shouldn't overlook the sheer class and sophistication of the Krotenpfuhl and Felsenberg, the latter being "a total joy of clarity, direction, and stony poise" with 98-point potential per Vinous' Anne Krebiehl.

With the absolute cream of the Dönnhoff crop all represented below, no matter which direction you turn in this line-up, you'll find yourself with a world-class, unforgettable expression that will shine like few others can.

Welcome to the Bladerunner of Nahe riesling Spatlese. This is also extremely fine and complex, with a cornucopia of stone fruit, exotic fruit and spices. Radical stony minerality and racy acidity, yet with a feather-light mouthfeel on the barely medium-bodied palate. Then you wonder if the wine will ever leave you, so long is the almost endless farewell. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Riesling Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese, grown on shale, has equal notions of moss and lemon. More air makes this smell simply of wet stone. The 2023 is glorious in its lightness and disarming in its elegance. (Sweet)

This comes from 50- to 90-year-old vines and is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc and 10% Merlot with 13.28% alcohol, 3.72 pH and an IPT of 71. The 2017 Léoville Las Cases is deep garnet-purple in color, and wow, the nose bursts with beautiful blackcurrant cordial, blackberry pie and blueberry preserve notes followed by hints of lilacs, dark chocolate, cedar chest, sassafras and licorice with emerging wafts of oolong tea, lavender and iron ore. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is an exercise in elegance and soft-spoken nuances within a mouth-coating palate of almost electric black and blue fruits, framed by very firm, exquisitely ripe, fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing epically long and wonderfully perfumed. Damn, that’s good.

98+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2020)

The purity here is really something. Blackberries and blackcurrants with sandalwood, mint and other classic herbs. Full-bodied and dense with ultra-fine tannins. Silky in all ways. Goes on for a long, long time. A blend of 79% cabernet sauvignon, 11% cabernet franc and 10% merlot. Joyous and serious wine for the vintage. And comparable to 2014 and 2015. Try after 2023.

The 2017 Léoville Las Cases captures all the best the vintage has to offer. Rich, unctuous and stunning in its beauty, the 2017 possesses tremendous richness and textural intensity that carry through to the very long finish, all with the regal, statuesque feel that is the quintessential signature of Las Cases. Just as it was from barrel, Las Cases is wonderfully polished. Tasted two times. What a wine!

The grand vin 2017 Chateau Leoville Las Cases checks in as 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Merlot, harvested between the 15th of September and the 4th of October. Brought up in 90% new French oak, it has an incredibly classic style that carries loads of creme de cassis, crushed rock, graphite, and smoked tobacco-like aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied, concentrated, elegant Las Cases that has fine tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. It shows the refined, regal style of this estate, has beautiful richness and depth, and is going to drink nicely with just 5-7 years of bottle age.

97 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2020)

A very focused, very pure rendition, laden with cassis, plum reduction and boysenberry puree fruit that is mostly waiting in reserve. A cold cast iron edge imparts a sense of restraint, while smoldering tobacco, charcoal and alder notes are deeply buried on the finish. The opposite of flamboyant. In need of time. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Best from 2025 through 2040. 12,500 cases made.

96 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2020)

The watchword for this wine is style. Tannins underline the fruit. This rich structure, while not losing the swaths of berry flavors and crisp black currants, presents the balance between the ripeness and freshness of the vintage. Drink this wine from 2024.

2022 Schoffit Gewurztraminer Clos St Theobald Grand Cru Rangen de Thann (750ml)

The 2022 Gewurztraminer Rangen Clos Saint Théobald Grand Cru is from parcels in the lower and mid reaches of the Rangen. It comes with lovely honeysuckle, tangerine peel and an overtone of rose. The palate is rounded and robust, channeling rose oil on a stony palate. It opens into the fresh, crushed flesh of ripe yellow peach, edged with vivid zestiness, blood orange peel and an exquisite, lovely, mouthwatering, pithy bitterness. This is what makes the wine, what gives it structure and depth. This is intense but toned, gorgeous, prolonged, and off-dry with 23 g/L of residual sweetness. (Off-Dry)

96 points, Anne Krebiehl, Vinous (Apr 2024)

From 50+-year-old vines, the 2022 Gewurztraminer Grand Cru Rangen Clos Saint-Théobald opens clear, fresh and spicy on the intense, complex and very mineral nose, revealing tropical fruit aromas. On the palate, this is a very rich and dense but elegant and savory Gewürztraminer with serious tannins and a long, intense and powerful yet not alcoholic but saline and tension-giving finish. This is an impressive wine, but it is far too young to be served yet. 14.3% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in Colmar, November 2024.

2023 Zilliken Riesling Saarburger Rausch Kabinett (750ml)
Riesling from Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"Dorothee Zilliken once again managed to portray the ethereal, almost weightless and veil-like style of Saar Riesling for which the house is famed." - Anne Krebhiel, Vinous

The Middle Mosel gets the lion's share of attention in the region, but German Riesling insiders know that some of the finest expressions for the money can be found along the Saar tributary, a narrow river valley meeting the Upper Mosel from the south. The steep cliffs and high winds are perilous viticultural challenges, and the small Saar river doesn't provide any of the meso-climatic advantages found on the Mosel itself. But the south-facing vineyards enjoy the ideal exposition and slope to ripen grapes, and the results are some of the most crystalline, elegant Rieslings in the world.

The 2023 vintage played perfectly to the Saar's advantage, with the valley avoiding much of the harvest rains that fell on the rest of the Mosel. Rausch's south-southwest facing parcels of broken Greywacke and Devonian slate are the perfect foundations for Zilliken's style. The JS95 Kabinett is "intense and complex, gorgeously saline and filigreed" according to Wine Advocate, while the double 96-point Spätlese is "elegant, beautifully clear, luminous, intense and yet so light," perfectly encapsulating what makes the finest Saar expressions stand out from the their contemporaries. Finally, we come to the fabulous 2023 GGs, starting with the Rausch, "a rich and complex yet always pure, saline and mineral Rausch that bears great complexity and mineral tension" according to Advocate. Keen-eyed collectors won't overlook the "fabulous" WA95 Ockfen Bockstein GG, "a full-bodied, complex, very long, saline and stimulating Riesling of exceptional quality," as described by Advocate's Stephan Reinhardt.

Zilliken's wines are always exemplary offerings that stand at the very best of the Mosel/Saar, and collectors and enthusiasts won't want to miss these cellar contenders that will shine for decades.

A great riesling kabinett with terrific vitality and extremely elegant acidity that give this a fantastic balance and accentuate the purity. Glides over the finish dispensing chamomile, mint and lemon balm aromas like a shower of rain. A delicate wine with great aging potential. Drink or hold.

95 points, Stuart Pigott, James Suckling (Oct 2024)

The 2023 Rausch Kabinett is very precise and clear on the well-defined, precise and filigreed nose that intermingles very fine slate and bright fruit aromas. Juicy and savory on the palate, this is an intense and complex, gorgeously saline and filigreed Kabinett with black tea with milk and brown rock sugar aromas. It is weightless yet intense and irresistible. 8% stated alcohol and just below 50 grams per liter of residual sugar. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in August 2024 from AP 4 24.

94 points, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate (Oct 2024)

The 2023 Riesling Saarburger Rausch Kabinett is like a sun-ripened, red-cheeked peach: aromatic, juicy and so scented. The palate drips with juice, ripe and smooth, yet always understated despite its exquisitely pure aroma. Zestiness channels the finish, but the shining, aromatic peach absolutely defines the character of this tender wine.

2023 Clos des Papes Blanc (750ml)
Grenache Blanc from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France

95JS 94V

A creamy, well-rounded yet lively and citrusy white. It shows notes of fresh lemons, grapefruit, dried herbs, fennel and mild spices. It's medium- to full-bodied. Plenty of volume on the ample palate, harmonious and poised. There is so much texture on the mid-palate with a caressing touch at the edge. Round and aromatic with a fresh, citrusy finish. Drink or hold.

95 points, James Suckling (Jun 2024)

Vivid honeysuckle, lemon peel, ripe pear and spring blossom introduce the 2023 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc. Fennel and grapefruit add more layers to what is yet another captivating white Clos des Papes from Paul-Vincent Avril. Medium-bodied and nicely balanced by mild acidity, the 2023 closes with delicate salinity on the persistent finale.

2021 Vajra Bricco delle Viole (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"Stylistically, the Vajra Barolos embody all the virtues of modern classicism. The wines are elegant, silky, polished and an absolute delight to drink." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

You know the name, and perhaps you already know that the 2021 vintage in Barolo is one for the books, so let's jump right into this set of stunning new releases from "one of the leading estates in Piedmont."

As any astute Barolo collector knows, a great vintage is marked not only by the heights that the top wines reach, but by the overall quality of the entry-level offerings, and Vajra's flagship Albe bottling knocks it out of the park in 2021. Wine Advocate's Monica Larner tagged it with 95 points and called it "an enormously versatile expression of Nebbiolo, with an affordable price, that offers more value for your money than most Barolos out there," with several other critics chiming in with their own glowing praise for a serious sub-$40 contender.

Movnig to the single crus, Vajra's enviable stable is a star-studded affiair in this benchmark campaign, led by a pair of 98-point collectible treasures in the Ravera and Bricco della Viole, the latter "a wine of stature and breeding" showcasing "little details [that] emerge with terrific sharpness in an epic vintage such as 2021." Of course, we shouldn't overlook the 96-point Coste di Rose. "Loaded with finesse" per Kerin O'Keefe, "[it's] already tempting, [but] the best is yet to come."

It's safe to say this is one of the must-have ranges in 2021 Barolo, so collectors should make room in the cellar and cast a wide net on these guaranteed long-haul trophies.

The 2021 Barolo Bricco Delle Viole is more refined and complete at this tasting, with more depth than the Coste delle Rose, exhibiting notes of raspberry liqueur, pressed flowers, sweet herbs, and fresh earth. A very pure and well-balanced vintage for this wine, it really shines with exceptional detail, offering even tannins and a balanced, seamless structure throughout. It feels as though this wine will offer the broadest window for enjoyment, thanks to its purity and length, which are quite profound. Drink over the coming decades. In the cellar, it underwent 51 days of submerged cap maceration, followed by 24 months of cask aging before being bottled.

98 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2025)

The organic G.D. Vajra 2021 Barolo Bricco delle Viole first shows a fragile side, but it eventually rolls onto much greater momentum and focus as it opens in the glass. This is always one of my favorite wines from this excellent producer, and I love it especially thanks to its fine nuances of redcurrant, pressed flower and something a little savory like peat moss. There is a hint of ashy stone or brimstone. All of these little details emerge with terrific sharpness in an epic vintage such as 2021. Fruit comes from a seven-hectare plot at 400 to 480 meters in elevation on Sant'Agata marl soils with marine fossils.

97 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jan 2025)

This red is rich and succulent, displaying cherry, raspberry, earth, leather and eucalyptus flavors. A mineral note emerges as this builds to the long, red fruit– and rose hip–stained finish. Best from 2028 through 2046. From Italy.

97 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Aug 2025)

Dark cherries, orange rind, dried flowers and cinnamon on the nose. The palate is incisive and medium- to full-bodied with tender fruit, refined and polished tannins and a long, persistent, flavorful finish. Elegant and almost ethereal in essence. Really well crafted and detailed. Better in 2026.

97 points, Jacobo Garcia-Andrade Llamas, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

The 2021 Barolo Bricco delle Viole is a wine of stature and breeding. Vertical in shape, the Bricco delle Viole has so much to offer. Dark-toned fruit, leather, incense, gravel and licorice add an attractive savory edge. The 2021 is an especially somber, potent Bricco delle Viole. I would not dream of touching a bottle anytime soon.
