The delivery was a day late; more the fault of the shipping company, I’m sure. Being on schedule is important for alcohol, because it can only be delivered to the person named on the order, and has to be signed for. How about having to reschedule your work day because of a late delivery. Apart from that, I’m very happy with this retailer ‑ they have what I need, and very reasonably priced.

Well structured, deep in red and black fruit and rather big in style. One of the more affordable, classic valley-wide blends that will age for several years. Firm tannins and a full body support black cherries and dark chocolate notes. Drink or hold.

A sweet deal on a cellar worthy assortment of high scoring Bordeaux, all under $30! From some of the region’s most undervalued estates, these “three lollipop” selections hit the sweet spot for Bordeaux lovers seeking outstanding value, a range of age worthy blends unbeatably priced for Bordeaux bargain hunters to stock the cellar and enjoy often.

  • A St. Estephe blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot from the Cazes family of Lynch-Bages, the impressive 94 pt. 2019 Ormes de Pez offers “a delightful mix of dark fruit and fresh flavors” according to the Wine Spectator’s James Molesworth, packing “plenty of punch” according to Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson who calls it a “brilliant value” ready to enjoy over the next decade.
  • Described as “super classy from start to finish” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the refined 95 pt. 2019 Chateau Cantemerle is a robust Left Bank blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot aged in 40% new French oak, yielding “a richly structured wine that is balanced by ripe black fruits” with “a vibrant finish” according to the Wine Enthusiast’s Roger Voss and built to evolve over the next two decades.
  • An under the radar gem from Moulis offering a “classic Left Bank feel” according to Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson, the inviting 94 pt. 2019 Chateau Poujeaux “numbers among the real sleepers of the vintage” according to the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley, an impeccably crafted blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot built to deliver the goods for another two decades.
  • Described as “an excellent, quite substantial Margaux for long-term ageing” by Vinous critic Neal Martin, the sumptuous 94 pt. 2020 Labegorce is “juicy and plush with a sense of gravitas coming through on the long, layered finish” according to the Wine Independent’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown, an outstanding value summed up by Decanter’s Georgina Hindle as “classic, easy to drink and to recommend.”

Whether deciding on a few favorites or finding it hard to choose, these high scoring Bordeaux blends are bargain priced for mixing a case, a sweet deal for anyone seeking to pull the cork on a terrific Bordeaux more often.

Clear depth to the cassis fruits, studded with fennel, anis, cut herbs, raspberry leaf and smoked earth, delivering complexity and pleasure. A brilliant wine, and a great value pick. 33% new oak. Harvest September 16 to October 1, technical director Marjolaine de Coninck.

94 points, Jane Anson (Mar 2023)

A forward, textured, already delicious wine, the 2020 Château Labégorce offers lots of red and black fruit as well as notes of cedar, smoke tobacco, and chocolate. Based on 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged in 40% new barrels, it has perfectly integrated oak, ripe, fine-grained tannins, and outstanding overall balance. Give bottles just a year or three and enjoy over the following 10-15 years or more.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

The 2020 Labegorce, matured in 40% new oak, has a fragrant, floral bouquet with wilted rose petals infusing the lively red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit. There is something "airy" about the aromatics here. The palate is slightly honeyed in texture, saturated tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit commingling with white pepper and iodine. Great persistence and salinity on the finish - an excellent, quite substantial Margaux for long-term ageing.

93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Feb 2023)

Deep garnet-purple in colored, the 2020 Labegorce tumbles out of the glass with fragrant notions of kirsch, red roses, and stewed plums, leading to suggestions of damp soil and truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is juicy and plush with a sense of gravitas coming through on the long, layered finish.

93 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Mar 2023)

Beautiful, perfumed blackcurrants on the nose, smells lovely. Juicy and supple, this has a nice roundness and a fleshy texture in the glass while still being quite focused and streamlined. This has a sleekness to the tannins, the fruit goes in one line from start to finish, so it’s not so expansive or particularly deep but does have a nice style to it. Good acidity, concentration and freshness. Focused, driven, clean with precision. Classic, easy to drink and to recommend.

2019 Chateau Lagrange (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Saint-Julien, Bordeaux, France

A sweet deal on a cellar worthy assortment of under the radar gems, this treasure trove of irresistible “five lollipop” selections are all bargain priced under $50 for B-21 Bordeaux lovers to stash away to enjoy over the next few decades, a terrific opportunity to stock the cellar with high scoring, value priced Bordeaux whether choosing a few favorites or mixing a case.

  • Described as “enormously elegant, with tons of St Julien balance” by Jane Anson of Inside Bordeaux, the impressive 96 pt. 2019 Chateau Lagrange St. Julien is “a benchmark for the estate" according to Neal Martin of Vinous, a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot crafted with Lagrange’s highest proportion ever of Cabernet Sauvignon. Employing rigorous selection in the vineyard with only a third of the harvest going into the Grand Cru, winemaker Matthieu Bordes and consultant Eric Boissenot aged the 96 pt. 2019 Chateau Lagrange for 21 months in 50% new French oak barrels, yielding “a dark sumptuous wine” with a “super finessed personality” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous and summed up as “a wine for some long-term aging” by the Wine Enthusiast’s Roger Voss.
  • Crafted by the same stellar team as its Super Second sibling Leoville-Barton, the elegant 96 pt. 2019 Chateau Langoa Barton is “a soft, seamless, beautifully textured Saint-Julien” according to Jeb Dunnuck, a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc offering lush concentrated dark fruit over a framework of velvety tannins. Sourced from vineyards bordering Leoville-Barton and Leoville-Poyferre and the remainder further south near Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou, Antonio Galloni of Vinous describes the luscious 96 pt. 2019 Chateau Langoa Barton as “an especially succulent, richly textured Langoa” that “will drink well right out of the gate” while the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley calls it “a timeless classic for patient readers with cold cellars” promising to evolve over the next few decades.
  • Described ” by Vinous critic Antonio Galloni as “a bold, sumptuous Pauillac with soft contours, generous fruit and tons of sheer appeal, the muscular 96 pt. 2019 Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal offers dark energetic fruit layered with minerality and refined tannins on a long-lived finish, an overachiever earning the #7 spot on James Suckling's Ten Best Value Buys 2019 Bordeaux. Sourced from vineyards situated on the gravelly plateau between Lynch-Bages and Pichon-Baron, the richly textured 2019 Chateau Haut-Bages Liberal is a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot, delivering “a dash of savory on the sleek finish” according to the Wine Spectator’s James Molesworth and an outstanding value “from an estate that deserves to be much better known” according to the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley.

96JA 95WA 95JD 95V 94JS 93WS

Inky, glass-staining in colour, this is richly textured and intense, easily rivalling the best ever vintages at the property. Filled with creamy damson and cassis fruit, with a sense of precision and restraint to the frame, held in by fine but plentiful tannins. 30% 1st wine, highest ever Cabenet Sauvignon, 50% new oak for ageing. An exceptional wine, marking 125 years since the founding of Suntory in Japan. Eric Boissenot consultant.

96 points, Jane Anson (Mar 2022)

The 2019 Lagrange has turned out beautifully in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, blackberries and cassis mingled with hints of loamy soil, pencil shavings and bay leaf. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with an ample core of lively fruit, powdery tannins and succulent acids, it's suave and seamless, concluding with a long, expansive finish. The result of an extremely rigorous selection, and incorporating fully 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is the finest wine this château has produced in the modern era. Remarkably, it was released at the same price en primeur as the 2005!

95 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

While I don't think the 2019 Château Lagrange matches the 2018, it's not far off, with a more elegant yet still concentrated style. Beautiful crème de cassis, spicy oak, tobacco, chocolate, and new saddle leather notes all emerge on the nose, and it stays tight, compact, and focused on the palate, with plenty of firm tannins. It opens up beautifully with time in the glass but merits 4-6 years of bottle age, and it should evolve for 20-25 years or more.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Lagrange, which was picked over the longest period ever, has a compelling bouquet of beautifully defined black fruit laced with cedar and light graphite notes. The palate is smooth, fresh and vibrant, with great depth, perfectly judged acidity and a brilliantly focused finish. Winemaker Mathieu Bordes has crafted the best Lagrange in recent years, a benchmark for the estate.

95 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Aromas of blackcurrants, sandalwood and rose petals. Medium-to full-bodied with linear tannins that are racy and refined, yet forceful. Fine tannins at the end. Best after 2024.

94 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

Juicy and flush, with steeped red and black currant and plum fruit flavors, this has a generous edge from start to finish. Features notes of tobacco, singed cedar, warm earth and iron throughout, with a seductive hint of incense curling around the tail end of the finish. This has a generosity that makes it approachable, but there's no rush at all to drink this one. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2023 through 2036. 16,000 cases made, 700 cases imported.

2020 Ossian Quintaluna Verdejo (750ml)
Verdejo from Segovia, Castilla y Leon, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"A fresh, medium-bodied white ... Bright and well-integrated, with a lasting, lively finish."- Wine Spectator

Crafted from some of Spain’s oldest vineyards in Castilla y Leon, the crisp and enticing, 92-point 2020 Ossian Quintaluna Verdejo offers richly aromatic fruit with subtle minerality and vibrant acidity on a silky, mouthwatering finish, a delicious Spanish white with layered complexity value priced for stocking the cooler to enjoy often over the next few years.

Known for producing “rounder, more serious and minerally expressions of Verdejo” according to James Suckling, Ossian Vides y Vinos was established in the village of Nieva northwest of Madrid in 2005 to explore the winemaking potential of Segovia’s extremely old Verdejo vines, the region’s sandy soils helping to keep phylloxera bay while it ravaged other areas of Spain at the turn of the 20th century. Situated within the boundaries of the Rueda appellation, Ossian’s organically farmed vineyards span over 110 hectares, of which 50 hectares are planted with ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines ranging up to 160 years of age on the Voltoya River terraces between 840 and 930 meters above sea level, enjoying warm sunny days and cooler nighttime temperatures that enhance concentration and preserve acidity. Sourced from various plots in 5 different villages of Segovia comprised of 60% pre-Phylloxera and 40% younger vines and fermented with indigenous yeasts, the refined 2020 Ossian Quintaluna Verdejo was aged for nine months on the lees in a mix of stainless steel tanks and French foudres, yielding a rich and layered Verdejo that’s “bright and well-integrated” according to Wine Spectator’s Alison Napjus “with a lasting, lively finish.”

From a region known for producing “a bright, refreshing pour that delivers bang for the buck” according to Wine Enthusiast’s Mike DeSimone, the appealing 92-point 2020 Ossian Quintaluna Verdejo boasts the upfront appeal of fresh, vibrant Verdejo with the layered complexity of old vine fruit, a delicious, richly textured Verdejo delivering outstanding value

92WA 92WE 92JS 90WS

The 2020 Quintaluna is pure Verdejo from small plots on sandy soils in the province of Segovia, fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. They still use grapes from external suppliers but are working toward using 100% their own grapes (which they might achieve in 2023); therefore, the wine is not certified organic, because some of the vineyards from the growers are not certified. It has a balsamic nose reminiscent of bay leaf, dried yellow flowers, chamomile and pollen intermixed with pit fruit. It has a dry palate and a chalky texture, with balance and finesse, with moderate ripeness and 13.5% alcohol. 110,000 bottles.

92 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Jan 2023)

Light yellow in the glass, this wine has aromas of tangerine and lemon zest. Full on the palate, it conveys flavors of bergamot, yellow currant, aniseed and a touch of crumbled sage. Refreshing acidity bathes the palate from first sip through finish.

92 points, Mike DeSimone, Wine Enthusiast (Jul 2023)

Bitter almond with smoked lemon and rich lees on the nose, following through to a full-bodied palate with zesty lemon flavors. Love the taut texture on the palate, which is tense, dry and bright. An excellent verdejo. Drink on release.

92 points, James Suckling (Sep 2022)

A fresh, medium-bodied white, with a salty underpinning and hints of toast, white blossoms and spices accenting flavors of melon, crunchy white peach and lime pith. Bright and well-integrated, with a lasting, lively finish. Verdejo. Drink now through 2026. 8,000 cases made, 389 cases imported.

2018 Chateau La Vieille Cure (750ml)
Merlot from Fronsac, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"Always a winner, I can't remember the last vintage of this cuvée that didn't put a smile on my face." - Jeb Dunnuck

Declared “so reliable” by Jane Anson that it’s “a bellwether to the success of a vintage,” Château La Vieille Cure is considered the standard bearer for Fronsac, its exceptional consistency over the last decade driven by winemaker Jean-Luc Thunevin, the original garagiste pioneer and owner of Château Valandraud, who took the reins in 2013. The 20-hectare La Vieille Cure vineyard is situated in a single, contiguous plot facing Pomerol, planted mostly to Merlot vines averaging 40 years of age with the oldest at over 75 years. This duo of value stunners from 2018 & 2019 puts Anson's words into full perspective, as each rendition captures the quintessential character of the vintage while offering the unmistakable signature of this benchmark Fronsac terroir.

Defined by the vintage's power and opulence, the seductive 2018 La Vieille Cure "is a total pleasure bomb" according to Antonio Galloni, "In a word: fabulous." Jeb Dunnuck likewise sums it up as "a smoking wine that readers should snatch up!" The slightly more refined and approachable 94-point 2019 (again, a hallmark of the vintage) is "just an impeccably made, satisfying, classic Right Bank beauty."

These confirm that Bordeaux continues to be a hotbed of unbeatable values, offering wines of superb sophistication and cellar potential for prices that allow anyone to load the cellar and reap the rewards for years to come.

93JD 93JS 92WA 92V 92WS

The deep ruby-hued 2018 Château La Vieille Cure is a smoking wine that readers should snatch up! Lots of red and black currants, cedary spice, dried tobacco, and a touch of chalky minerality all emerge from the glass, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a fruit-loaded, concentrated mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It has a touch of background oak, but that should integrate with 2-4 years in the cellar, and this gorgeous Fronsac will shine over the following decade or more.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

Aromas of plum, blueberry, dark chocolate and walnut husk. Some pine cone, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, powdery tannins. Chewy, creamy and polished all at once. Extremely well done. Try from 2023.

93 points, James Suckling (Mar 2021)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 La Vieille Cure opens with cedar chest, graphite and tree bark scents, giving way to a core of baked blackberries, stewed plums and cherry compote, with wafts of Sichuan pepper and star anise. The full-bodied palate (15% alcohol) is wearing a lot of oak at this stage, with a good core of baked black fruits and loads of exotic spice accents, supported by grainy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing woody. Give it a good 5 years for the oak to integrated and drink it over the next 12-15 years or more.

92+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Apr 2021)

The 2018 La Vieille Cure is a total pleasure bomb. Rich, sumptuous and exotically beautiful, the 2018 grabs hold of all the senses and never lets up. Inky dark fruit, spice, new leather, licorice, mocha and chocolate build as this exuberant, deeply layered Fronsac shows off its soft curves and considerable charms. In a word: fabulous.

92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

This has a succulent feel, pulling you into its mix of fresh plum, red cherry and raspberry coulis flavors while bergamot and red tea accents stay in the background. Finish is juicy but tightly focused, with an underlying chalky thread lending precision. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2030. 7,633 cases made.

Reflecting its owner's commitment to producing authentic, terroir-driven wines, this dynamic duo from Raymond Vineyards are two of Napa Valley’s top values, the enticing 92 pt. 2022 Raymond Chardonnay Reserve Selection and elegant 93 pt. 2021 Raymond Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve Selection both sourced from exceptional Napa fruit at an outstanding price for stocking up.

Known for his larger-than-life personality and flamboyant velvet jacket attire, Burgundy-born Jean-Charles Boisset is a true believer that great wines are made in the vineyard, and his first priority after purchasing Raymond Vineyards in 2009 was to upgrade the existing 90-acre property and implement organic and biodynamic viticulture. Established in Napa Valley over 50 years ago by long-time Beringer winemaker Roy Raymond, Raymond Vineyards now spans over 300 acres in Rutherford and St. Helena, the vineyards and winemaking managed under the direction of 100 pt. consulting winemaker Phillipe Melka since 2009. In addition to gaining organic and biodynamic certification for the vineyards and building one of Napa's largest solar panel projects to generate electricity for the winery, Boisset hired former Far Niente winemaker Stephanie Putnam to work alongside Melka to refine the blends, consistently garnering 90-plus points throughout her tenure.

Expertly crafted from outstanding Napa fruit, this duo of top scoring Raymond Reserve Selections boast a winning combination of quality and value, both ready to enjoy now and promising pleasurable drinking for years ahead at an easy to reach for price.

93WI 92WS 92WE 91JS

A blend of 84% Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc making up the rest, the 2021 Raymond Reserve Selection Cabernet Sauvignon comes from 16 different vineyards. It is deep garnet-purple in color and soars from the glass with notes of warm cassis, blackberry pie, and chocolate mint, with underlying wafts of violets, pencil shavings, and cracked black pepper. The full-bodied palate is rich and seductive with great tension and velvety tannins, finishing long and layered.

93 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Nov 2023)

Flush with warmed cassis and plum reduction notes, this is inlaid with violet, cocoa, humus and singed alder accents. Generous in feel, with enough cut on the finish to match its heft. Best from 2025 through 2036. 16,000 cases made.

92 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2024)

Showing lots of cocoa, brown sugar and espresso in the aroma, this full-bodied wine oozes maple syrup and black cherries over a chalky, tannic texture that smooths out with more sipping. The concentration of black fruits is impressive.

Easy-sipping, full-bodied and almost sweet in flavor. This blend of grapes from around Napa Valley gives a broad, generous texture and lush, ripe red and black fruit. 11% of cabernet franc adds a little tannin to balance the sunny fruit flavors. Drink now.

Coming from the Cazes team, the 2019 Château Ormes De Pez is gorgeous and shines in the vintage. Pure crème de cassis, mulberries, leafy herbs, Asian spices, and lead pencil all emerge on the nose, and this medium to full-bodied 2019 has the vintage’s pure, focused, elegant style while staying ripe, supple, and textured. The balance is spot on, and it's going to hit maturity in roughly 8-10 years and have two decades of prime drinking.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

Big and full of tannins and structure, this is packed with dark fruits with a dry core. The wine's weight is impressive, density and richness. Drink from 2026.

93 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Oct 2022)

This shows lots of spice, such as cloves and nutmeg, together with dark berries and cherries and some plums. It’s structured and relatively dense, with lovely length and beauty. Needs time to open and come together. 50% merlot, 40% cabernet sauvignon with cabernet franc and petit verdot. Lovely now. Try after 2024.

93 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Ormes de Pez has a more Merlot-driven bouquet (54% of the blend), a little fleshier than its peers, quite pure with raspberry and cranberry scents. Fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid entry, good depth, though it does not deliver the precision of the Dame de Montrose and feels more muscular towards the finish. Yet that should see it age well over the next couple of decades. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

92 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Feb 2023)

Offers a delightful mix of dark fruit and fresh flavors, with plum and blackberry notes infused with dark tea, singed cedar and licorice root, all carried by sleek acidity through the finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Drink now through 2032.

92 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2022)

The 2019 Ormes de Pez is a blend of 50% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet-purple in color, it rolls out with gregarious scents of redcurrant preserves and blackcurrant cordial leading to hints of violets, dark chocolate, cedar chest, and graphite. The medium to full-bodied palate is elegant and refreshing, with lively red and black berry layers, finishing with a skip in its step.

2020 Chateau Fontenil (750ml)
Merlot from Fronsac, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

From the estate owned by renowned enologist and 100 pt. winemaker Michel Rolland, the lush and finessed 95 pt. 2020 Chateau Fontenil boasts dark, ripe polished fruit with elegant, integrated tannins on a long velvety finish, meticulously crafted of Merlot from an excellent vintage that “delivers the goods” according to Neal Martin of Vinous and a superb value.

Located in the lesser known Fronsac appellation on the right bank of the Gironde, Chateau Fontenil was established by Michel Rolland and his wife Dany in the mid-1980s, their search for a family country home leading them to a grand but rundown house in Saillans adjacent to seven hectares of old vines. First purchasing the vineyard and eventually the Chateau, the Rollands spent over a decade on a top to bottom renovation of the estate, restoring the Chateau, modernizing the wine-making facilities and replanting vineyards. Situated on a south facing slope overlooking the river Isle and the town of Libourne, the vineyards span 11 hectares planted mostly to Merlot in clay and limestone soils, located at the highest elevation on the plateau of Fronsac with vines averaging 45 years of age. Manually harvesting and vinifying plot by plot, the 2020 Chateau Fontenil exemplifies Michel Rolland’s supple, opulent style, aged in 60% new French oak for 15-18 months to yield vibrant fruit and smooth, fine grained tannins described as “impeccably balanced” by Antonio Galloni and finishing with “a welcome kick of acidity” according to Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson on a lengthy, elegant finish.

While many of his client’s top scoring Bordeaux blends have sky high prices to match, Michel Rolland’s elegant 95 pt. 2020 Chateau Fontenil is a superb value, “sexy, seamless, straight-up impressive” according to Jeb Dunnuck that’s “well worth a case purchase,” ready to drink and worthy of aging at an unbeatable price that makes it easy for Bordeaux lovers to do both.

95WI 93JD 93JS

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Fontenil slowly emerges from the glass with powerful notes of plum preserves, blueberry compote, and blackberry pie, followed by suggestions of licorice, tar, violets, and crushed rocks. The full-bodied palate is laden with vibrant, expressive black fruits, supported by plush tannins and lovely tension, finishing on a lingering aniseed note.

95 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Mar 2023)

The classic 2020 Château Fontenil from this Fronsac château is a winner and well worth a case purchase. Giving up lots of spiced red and black fruits, smoked tobacco, and flowery incense notes, it's medium to full-bodied, has a round, supple, elegant texture, beautiful tannins, and nicely integrated oak. This sexy, seamless, straight-up impressive Fronsac will evolve for at least a decade.

“These wonderful wines have a savory and mineral accent, with an open window for enjoyment at a great price point.”

Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck

From the pioneering champion of Sangiovese in Tuscany’s Bolgheri region, the rich and refined 95 pt. 2021 Michele Satta Piastraia Bolgheri Superiore reveals fresh, spiced dark fruit and vibrant acidity on a long, satisfying finish, a knockout Super Tuscan blend among the best values on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2024 and now unbeatably priced to stock the cellar.

Working as a consultant to some of Bolgheri’s earliest estates, Michele Satta became known as an expert in its coastal terroir, planting many of the region’s first vineyards including Ornellaia’s legendary Masseto and founding his winery in Castagneto Carducci two years before the Bolgheri DOC was established in 1982. Described by Jeb Dunnuck as producing accessible blends “with a unique elegance and sense of place from varietals not often championed on the Bolgheri coast,” Michele remained convinced of the area’s potential for producing Sangiovese despite its growing reputation for international grapes, now producing his portfolio from the family’s biodynamically farmed 24-hectare estate along with his son and second generation winemaker Giacomo Satta. Described by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner as embodying “the fierce spirit of independence that is encapsulated in all of Satta’s wines,” the 2021 Michele Satta Piastraia Bolgheri Superiore is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 20% Sangiovese, each varietal fermented separately with natural yeasts in cone-truncated oak barrels and aged in 20% new French oak for 18 months and another 24 months in bottle, yielding a fresh, vibrant blend with well-integrated acidity and harmonious tannins built to evolve over the next decade and showing “the potential of Sangiovese in this part of the Tuscan coast” according to critic Kerin O’Keefe.

Described by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner as reflecting Satta’s “remarkably smooth and elegant” house style, the graceful and silky 95 pt. 2021 Michele Satta Piastraia Bolgheri Superiore is built on a substantial backbone of depth and complexity that “makes you sit up and take notice,” according to Decanter’s James Button, a deliciously enticing and age worthy Super Tuscan blend made all the more appealing by a terrific value price.

2022 Turley Wine Cellars Zinfandel Old Vines (750ml)
Zinfandel from California
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

After co-founding Frog’s Leap Winery in Napa in the 1980s, Larry Turley’s passion to produce an artisan, old-vine Zin led him to sell his partnership share in Frog’s Leap and establish Turley Wine Cellars in 1993 with 5 acres of the original frog farm and winery, focusing on the recovery of California’s historic vineyards and expanding to over 75 acres of organically farmed vineyards. Crafted as a harmonious blend of California old-vine Zin from diverse terroirs, the 2022 Zinfandel Old Vines was sourced from over 20 small parcels planted with vines ranging from 50 to 130 years of age from diverse locations including Napa and Sonoma, Mendocino, Lodi, Contra Costa, Amador, and Paso Robles. A field blend of mostly Zinfandel fermented with native yeasts, veteran winemaker Tegan Passalacqua aged the 2022 Turley Wine Cellars Zinfandel Old Vines in a mix of 80% French oak and 20% American oak barrels consisting of 10% new and 90% used for 12 months, yielding a full-bodied, richly aromatic Zin with “generous berry fruit and a long, spicy finish” according to Wine Advocate’s Erin Brooks, "offers generous layers of fruit, spice and floral notes" that makes it “easy to drink" and an unequivocal recommendation for California Zin fans seeking outstanding value at an unbeatable price.

92WA

As with the Juvenile bottling, the 2022 Zinfandel Old Vines punches above its weight in this vintage. The nose is considerably deeper, fuller and more polished, opening with aromas of crushed plums, wild berry preserves, tobacco leaves and similar autumnal accents to its younger sibling. The palate is light- to medium-bodied, carrying through the polished quality of the nose and melds it with a subtly dusty tannin structure and bright acidity. The finish is straightforward and easy to drink, offering generous layers of fruit, spice and floral notes.

2020 Cheval des Andes (750ml)
Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

“The wine has the ultra sleek and polished texture and the elegance and the balance that is the signature here.” - Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate

When the winemaking expertise of the legendary First Growth Cheval Blanc is applied to grapes grown in top Argentinian terroir, collectors of exceptional Bordeaux-style blends reap the rewards. Argentine icon Cheval des Andes, a blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, is counted among “the top wines from South America'' according to Jane Anson, delivering superb value for collectors vintage after vintage.

Surrounded by stunning views of the rugged Andes Mountains, Cheval des Andes reflects the exacting standards of pioneering estate manager Pierre Lurton. Inspired by the discovery of the Las Compuertas parcel of ungrafted Malbec planted in Mendoza in 1929, Bordeaux-born Lurton collaborated with Argentina’s Terrazas de los Andes to produce a blend of the old-vine Malbec with Cabernet Sauvignon, reconnecting Château Cheval Blanc with the history of St-Emilion, where the once abundant Malbec was devastated by phylloxera. Sourced from two organically farmed estate vineyards spanning 50 hectares, Las Compuertas lies in Lujan de Cuyo on gentle slopes at an altitude of 1,070 meters above sea level, its cool microclimate and deep silty-loam soils are optimal for growing and ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, while Altamira in the Valle de Uco was planted with Malbec in 1945 at an altitude of 1,100 meters. Each vineyard divided into subplots and the grapes harvested and transported separately in refrigerated trucks to preserve freshness in the warmer 2020 vintage. Fermented parcel by parcel by winemaker Gerald Gabillet, formerly of Château Angélus, the richly concentrated 2020 Cheval des Andes is a blend of equal amounts of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Petit Verdot, aged in a mix of 50% new French oak barrels and larger foudres for up to 18 months and revealing “rich, polished tannins that deliver a juicy, balanced mouthfeel” according to Joaquin Hidalgo of Vinous with a decade or more of evolution ahead.

Reflecting its reputation as the “Grand Cru of Argentina” and summed up as “great stuff” by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson, the pedigreed 98-point 2020 Cheval des Andes is a pure and powerful expression of high-altitude Malbec with the structure and intensity of Cabernet Sauvignon, equally appealing for fans of Argentinian Malbec and collectors of “the very best and most sought-after New World reds” according to critic Tim Atkin and promising to deliver years of pleasurable drinking at an unbeatable collectible price.

98WA 97JS 97JA 96V

The 2020 Cheval des Andes was harvested from the last of February for the first time ever. It was Gabillet's second vintage at Cheval des Andes, and that year, he had to start without waiting for Pierre Olivier Clouet and Pierre Lurton from Cheval Blanc; when they arrived, they had finished picking the Malbec, which surprisingly was fresher in Las Compuertas (because of the higher percentage of clay?) than in Altamira (where the vines suffered more stress), saving the freshness. They now harvest using cold trucks (for the first time), and they also started earlier in the morning (six in the morning, impossible earlier in Mendoza...), which he reckons was very good for the precision of the wine. They used 40% 225-liter barrels, 40% 400-liter oak barrels and 20% 2,500-liter foudres, half of them new and with an élevage of 15 months on average, depending on the lots and varieties from 12 to 18 months. The final blend was 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot, which makes a comeback as it was not used since 2016. The key was to finish the fermentation of the Petit Verdot without skins, and that way, they have been able to use it in the blends of 2021, 2022 and 2023 in small but increasing percentages. This is slightly riper than 2019, with a little more alcohol (14.5%) and with very good structural tannins but saving the freshness, and it has the spicy side from the Petit Verdot (Gabillet talks about white pepper). The wine has the ultra sleek and polished texture and the elegance and the balance that is the signature here; the wine is very clean and precise. I see very good regularity across the three vintages I tasted next to each other—this 2020 and the 2018 and 2019. Overall, this is a triumph over the adverse conditions of the vintage. They produced their usual 100,000 bottles (since 2018), as they are renewing their vineyards and want to keep the volume stable. They produce this volume from the 36 productive hectares they have in Las Compuertas and Altamira.

98 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Aug 2023)

Ripe, baked dark cherries with spices and some violets. Hints of graphite, cocoa powder, incense and black pepper. Dried rose petals. A slightly fuller Cheval des Andes with tense, silky tannins and a lingering, generous finish. Ripe, but still has lots of restraint and precision. 49% malbec, 49% cabernet sauvignon with a 2% petit verdot. 24% of the malbec comes from Altamira and all the rest of the fruit come from Las Compuertas. Drink or hold.

97 points, Zekun Shuai, James Suckling (Apr 2023)

Crushed raspberry plum in colour, vibrant and concentrated, juicy and balanced, has precision and succulence and carefully thought out delivery of tannins, grilled spices, nutmeg, liqourice, bilberry, damson and pomegrante. Great stuff, playing at a high level. Gérald Gabillet winemaker and director, LVMH owners.

97 points, Jane Anson (Aug 2023)

The 2020 Cheval des Andes is a blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 49% Malbec and 2% Petit Verdot from Paraje Altamira in the Uco Valley and Las Compuertas in Luján de Cuyo. Aged in French oak barrels, it's purple in the glass with a garnet sheen. The nose reveals a well-judged approach to the warmth of 2020, featuring ripe plum, redcurrant, mint and hints of white pepper over a bed of bay leaf and cedar. It's dry and velvety on the palate, with rich, polished tannins that deliver a juicy, balanced mouthfeel. The balsamic notes and rich palate reflect the year's character, while the finish is dynamic and long-lasting.

Made with a special selection of Sangiovese, the 2020 Fontalloro is generous and rich, and the wine sports medium-dark color and concentration. The winemaking team has succeeded in bringing out an especially elegant side to this vintage. The wine offers pronounced notes of cherry and wild plum with delicate spice at the back. Like the other wines in this portfolio, there is a pretty mineral note that makes for a consistent through-line in all these new releases.

96 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (May 2023)

A vibrant red, with fleeting aromas of lavender and wild rosemary mingling with cherry, orange peel, earth, mineral and tobacco flavors. On the elegant side, despite its youthful power, with excellent harmony, refined tannins and a long, complex aftertaste. Sangiovese. Best from 2026 through 2045. 3,800 cases made, 1,200 cases imported.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Oct 2023)

Very refined and complex nose with a hint of pine cones, botanicals and dark mushrooms to the zesty oranges, mineral, fine musk and plums. Juicy, dry but textured on the palate with stacks of dusty tannins growing on the savory, full-bodied palate. Long and quite mineral in the finish. Better from 2025.

The 2020 Fontalloro is a sensual, enveloping wine. Dark red-toned fruit, sweet spice, tobacco, cedar and mint are all beautifully delineated. Fontalloro is a pure Sangiovese from vineyards that straddle the Chianti Classico and Colli Senesi appellations. The duality is very much on display here.

A soft, seamless, beautifully textured Saint-Julien, especially in the vintage, the 2019 Château Langoa Barton gives up lots of red and black currant fruits as well as textbook damp earth, leafy herbs, chocolate, and spring flowers. It's complex, medium to full-bodied, has beautiful tannins, and no hard edges. Drink this beauty any time over the coming 20-25 years. The blend is 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

The powerful tannins give this wine structure. They go with the jammy black fruits and richness. Spice and a complex texture are promising in this fine, stylish wine. Drink from 2026.

2019 Abadia Retuerta Seleccion Especial Sardon de Duero (750ml)
Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, Castilla y Leon, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Traveling along the N-122, following the River Duero in the direction of Vega Sicilia, we reached the small town of Sardon del Duero. Just outside this town, about a mile down the road in Retuerta, the Count of Castile commissioned the construction of a series of Abbeys in the 12th century. One of the most important was the monastery of Santa María de Retuerta (Abadia de Retuerta), built in a beautiful enclave on the banks of the Duero River – of all the monasteries built during this period, Abadia de Retuerta is one of only two in existence today.

Stunning, awe-inspiring, eye-popping in every sense – just plain nuts... this place is beautiful. Restoration began on the buildings as well as the Abbey in the 1990s. The current owners are heirs to this place and they did it right. A majestic spa, a Michelin starred restaurant, a Relais & Chateaux luxury hotel, guided tours via helicopter.... Quoting Maître de Maison, Andrés Araya, "Every architectural detail has been immaculately preserved. The monks’ cells are now guestrooms, the chapter house is the lounge bar, and the refectory is now a sumptuous restaurant." Friends, it's THAT amazing!

As for the vineyards, they are planted to the north facing slopes, on the south side of the River Duero. As with their famous neighbors – Vega Sicilia – these hillside vineyards on the south side of the river gradually ascend, topping out at 2,500 feet from their base near the River of 2,100 feet elevation. Working with world-renowned winemaker Pascal Delbeck (Chateau Petrus), the team here isolated the best parcels (pagos – 54 in all), planting 510 acres to a combination of soils ranging from clay and gravel near the river to limestone mixed with boulders and stones on the upper reaches of the hillside. Mostly Tempranillo, along with varying percentages of Cabernet and Syrah gives us Retuerta's fascinating, classically unique flavor profile.

Planted in the 1990s (Petrus' winemaker as their guide), the only major difference between the vineyards here and Vega Sicilia is vine age... the bang for the buck is unbelievable!

Profound and intense nose with some tapenade, black beans and cocoa powder that gives depth to the already deep blackberries. Hints of dark spices and cigar box, too. Plenty of palpable tannins evenly melt into full-bodied palate with juicy dark fruit. Brooding and long finish. Cabernet sauvignon, syrah, merlot and petit verdot. Drink or hold.

94 points, Zekun Shuai, James Suckling (Nov 2023)

The 2019 Selección Especial, cropped from a warm and dry year, is composed of 64% Tempranillo, 15% Cabernet sauvignon, 14% Syrah, 6% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot and has 14.5% alcohol, coming through as riper than the 2020 I tasted next to it. It's also darker, round and powerful, with plenty of tannins, wide and concentrated. This is from a warm year, with lower yields, and it's a very powerful wine, balsamic with notes of aromatic herbs, a little more Mediterranean. 369,610 bottles produced and bottled in 27 lots after one year in barrel.

92 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Jan 2023)

The 2019 Selección Especial is a blend of 69% Tempranillo, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Syrah, 4% Merlot, 2% Graciano and 1% Petit Verdot from Abadía Retuerta in Castilla y León and was aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels. Garnet-red with a purple sheen. Cedar complements plum, camphor and spice aromas on the nose. Dry and fairly fruity, the finely-grained tannins support a mild, polished mouthfeel. The 2019 is a cosmopolitan red.

2021 Fontanabianca Barbaresco (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy

Named for the historic well or “white fountain” that lies below the cantina on the northern side of the village of Neive, Fontanabianca is managed by second generation Aldo Polo and his son Matteo, honing his skills under his father along with legendary consultant Beppe Ca’ Viola before taking the reins as winemaker in 2016. Situated in an area known for producing “structured, age worthy wines that boast elegance” according to the Wine Enthusiast, the 100% Nebbiolo grapes for the 2021 Barbaresco are sourced from three estate vineyards in the commune of Neive, the vines planted in calcareous clay soils on steep slopes rising to 300 meters above sea level and enjoying full sun exposure that promotes even ripening. Sourced from an outstanding Barbaresco vintage producing “volume, lushness and balance” according to Decanter’s Aldo Fiordelli, Matteo aged the 2021 Fontanabianca Barbaresco in used barrels for 15 months followed by 8 more months in bottle, crafted in an enticing style Antonio Galloni calls “hedonistic and decadent Barbaresco at its very best” and yielding a rich and full-bodied Nebbiolo with earthy minerality and fine, polished tannins that promise longevity over the coming 10-15 years.

94WA 94KO 93WE 93JS 92JD

This wine sources its fruit from a 5.5-hectare vineyard on limestone clay soil. The Fontanabianca 2021 Barbaresco delivers sharp, pinpoint focus with cherry and cassis over a medium-plus mouthfeel. The fruit takes center stage, but the wine also unfolds slowly over time to showcase crushed stone, dried herbs and pressed violet. This is a 35,000-bottle production.

94 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jan 2025)

Beautiful aromas of cake spice, blue flower, perfumed berry and camphor appear on the fragrant 2021 Barbaresco from Fontanabianca. Smooth and delicious, the elegant palate reveals raspberry compote wild cherry star anise and blood orange alongside lithe, polished tannins and bright acidity. A beautiful wine.

94 points, Kerin O'Keefe (Apr 2024)

A lively mix of candied and fresh red fruits, bay leaf, and green herbs, with a whisper of cinchona bark and blooming rose. Dried cherry leads the palate in a tangy, mouthwatering dance with a playful herbal twist. Elegant tannins frame the entire palate as notes of crushed stone and earth finish the wine. Drink 2026 - 2045

93 points, Jeff Porter, Wine Enthusiast (Sep 2024)

This is a bright and perfumed Barbaresco that shows potpourri, rose hips, dried strawberries and orange peel on the nose. It’s medium-bodied, zesty and vibrant, with tight-knit tannins and crunchy acidity. Try from 2026.

93 points, James Suckling (Jan 2024)

Coming from Neive, the 2021 Barbaresco takes a medium ruby hue and reveals aromas of fresh cranberries, clove, dried orange, roses, and anise. Medium-bodied, elegant, and weightless, with fine tannins and even acidity, it’s approachable and open now and is going to show its best over the next 5-6 years. It’s a very pretty and charming wine with good value.

The 2019 Poujeaux has a very delineated, focused bouquet of blackberry, cedar, mint and light tea leaf scents, one of the most complex I have encountered from this great estate in recent years. The medium-bodied palate is fresh, vibrant and grippy, with slightly chalky tannins and a saline, persistent finish. Quite structured and broody, this Moulis deserves ample time in bottle.

94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Very attractive chocolate, red-chili and cedar aromas and flavors. Lavender, too. Medium body with firm, polished tannins and a caressing finish. Pretty texture to this. It will be ready sooner than some. Try after 2024.

93 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

A fleshy, dramatic rendition of this Moulis benchmark, the 2019 Poujeaux unwinds in the glass with a deep bouquet of blackberries and plums mingled with subtle hints of cigar wrapper, loamy soil and violets. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's deep and seamless, with succulent acids, powdery tannins and a long, expansive finish. This has turned out brilliantly and numbers among the real sleepers of the vintage.

92 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

Poujeaux is a well constructed wine that often needs a few years to soften into itself, and is capable of ageing at least a decade and usually two - certainly in serious vintages such as 2019. Expect plenty of brambled fruits with a rustic hedgerow edge, juicy liquorice and cocoa, smoked earth and campfire. Not quite at the heights of Poujeaux in 2016 or 2010, but still excellent quality. 48hl/h yield (a good result after a low-yielding 2018). They have 7ha in organic trials since 2018, of their 70ha in total. 33% new oak.

92 points, Jane Anson (Jan 2023)

Bright nose, strawberries, red cherries and touches of dark chocolate with soft perfume aromas. Nice plump fruit here with a milky chalky edge to the tannins that are quite mouth coating right now. It has good drive and underlying acidity giving lift and you can feel the powerful and well-handled fruit underneath. Black cherries, fig and some pune and dark chocolate notes. A deeper, headier style that will be great in a few years.

2021 Fonterutoli Chianti Classico (750ml)
Sangiovese from Chianti, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Declaring it “the single greatest young vintage I have ever tasted in Chianti Classico,” Antonio Galloni of Vinous calls 2021 “a vintage to buy deep.” This treasure trove of top-scoring, entry-level Chianti Classico wines a terrific opportunity for Sangiovese fans to stock the cellar at a bargain price.

Starting off with a mild, wet winter, the optimal 2021 growing season in Chianti Classico had sufficient rainfall reserves to allow the vines to thrive in the hot and dry summer, and with well-timed periods of rain in late August, the picture-perfect vintage yielded lower quantities of high quality, concentrated grapes expressing pure Sangiovese character with vibrant acidity.

  • Earning a spot on Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2023, the fresh and refined 91-point 2021 Cecchi Chianti Classico Storia di Famiglia is a harmonious blend of mostly Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon that’s “immediately appealing for its lush fruit” according to the Wine Spectator’s Bruce Sanderson.
  • Described as “one of Italy’s ultimate value wines” by Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, the sleek and refined 90-point 2021 Dievole Chianti Classico offers fragrant, spiced fruit aged in large untoasted French casks, sourced from Dievole’s 100 hectares of organically certified Sangiovese vineyards in Castelnuovo Berardenga.
  • Described by Galloni as showing “gorgeous depth," the robust 93-point 2021 Fonterutoli Chianti Classico comes from the renowned Mazzei family’s Castellina in Chianti winery, described as “more powerful and concentrated than your standard entry-level Chianti Classico” by Monica Larner “for those who appreciate more meat on those Sangiovese bones.”

This value packed offer is a terrific opportunity to enjoy some seriously delicious Sangiovese wines from a stellar vintage at an unbeatable price.

This powerful red is dense yet fleshy, evoking cherry, tobacco, iron, earth and wild herb notes. Balanced and fresh, with a lingering aftertaste of fruit, savory Mediterranean herbs and mineral notes. Best from 2026 through 2041. 5,000 cases made, 500 cases imported.

93 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Jun 2024)

Notes of raspberries and cherries with red licorice, dried orange peel and spices. Medium- to full-bodied with meaty structure. Tannins are wide and velvety with a juicy, red-fruited mid-palate. Fresh and crunchy at the end. Drink or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (Aug 2023)

From a vintage that delivered great results across the region, the 2021 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli is a bit darker, more powerful and concentrated than your standard entry-level Chianti Classico. Cherry and dark plum cede to pretty mineral tones. That extra intensity is part of the house style and is a little gift for those who appreciate more meat on those Sangiovese bones. In fact, that grape is blended with a small 10% part of Malvasia Nera and Colorino in this ample 290,000-bottle release hitting the market now.

92 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Sep 2023)

The 2021 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli is redolent of dark cherry, plum, leather, licorice, menthol, dried herbs, incense and sage. Pliant and expressive, with gorgeous depth, the 2021 is a fine edition of the straight Chianti Classico.

2016 Malescot St. Exupery (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Among Bordeaux enthusiasts and insiders, Malescot St-Exupery is one of the most consistent performers in Margaux, routinely raking in scores and accolades that compete with those of its much more expensive neighbors. From two of Bordeaux's most heralded 21st-century vintages, the pair on offer today exemplify the enchanting elegance and class of this famed Left Bank appellation.

The 2016 has been a monumental achievement sinceen primeur, showcasing this generational vintage in all its glory. Neal Martin declared at the time, "it is one of the best Malescot-St-Exupery that I have tasted and it is wonderful," with subsequent reviews over the years confirming it as "a magnificent Margaux." With similar glowing accolades from the likes of James Suckling, Jeb Dunnuck, Antonio Galloni, and Lisa Perrotti-Brown, the 2016 remains one of the great collectible Left Bank buys in the market, even nearly a decade after its original release.

Likewise, the 2019 is "quite possibly the most elegant wine I have tasted here ... a magical wine endowed with tremendous character," according to Galloni. Dovetailed between the two powerhouse vintages of 2018 and 2020, the 2019 offers impeccable balance and poise that are definitive features of this excellent but under-the-radar vintage. James Suckling's 96-point review describes it as "full-bodied and layered with beautifully polished tannins that last for minutes," underscoring the wine's inherent longevity and potential for thrilling development in the cellar.

If you're a fan of the estate, this is the perfect opportunity to back-fill your vertical or reload if you couldn't resist diving in already, and if you're looking to start a collection of Bordeaux's best, you'll be hard-pressed to find a sharper buy than these pristine expressions from a true surefire performer.

A stunning red with currants, blackberries, roses and violets. Medium to full body, ultra-fine tannins and polish and finesse to the powerful tannins. A real stunner. Better than 2015. Take a serious look at it, beginning 2024.

97 points, James Suckling (Dec 2019)

The ruby/plum-colored 2016 Château Malescot Saint-Exupéry comes from vines in the heart of the Margaux appellation and is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It’s a total rock star of wine and has fabulous notes of crème de cassis, barbecue smoke, graphite, and sandalwood that build beautifully with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied, concentrated, layered, and seamless, it’s incredibly impressive and I’d wager up with the finest vintages ever from this estate. Give it a few years and enjoy over the following 20-25. Bravo!

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2019)

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Malescot St. Exupery sings of cassis, fragrant earth, tobacco and lilacs with a compelling waft of mocha. Medium to full-bodied and strutting loads of expressive fruit layers at this youthful stage, it's framed by ripe, grainy tannins and oodles of freshness, finishing with great length and depth.

95 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Nov 2018)

The 2016 Malescot Saint Exupéry has a well-defined bouquet of ample red currant, cranberry and strawberry fruit laced with rose petal and hints of graphite. There is something almost Saint Julien–like about the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with supple, graphite-infused black fruit, and quite linear and poised, but it conveys a genuine sense of energy and tension toward the classic finish. A magnificent Margaux.

2023 Antinori Tenuta Guado al Tasso Il Bruciato (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Bolgheri, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

While Tignanello gets all (or almost all) the attention in the Marchesi Antinori stable, the Guado al Tasso wines have started to gain some serious traction of their own among Italian fans, and they now stand apart from their more famous sibling in all the right ways.

This latest set of new releases show the unmatched pedigree of Antinori, from the sterling quality of the fruit, to the clear terroir signatures, to the precise and meticulous winemaking. The entry-level Il Bruciato has fast made a name for itself as one of the great Super Tuscan value performers in the market, and the 93-point 2023 delivers on this reputation. "Full-bodied ... generous and rounded, with supple ripe tannins providing a fleshy sensation through the finish," notes Audrey Frick, writing for Jeb Dunnuck. The blend of all five Bordeaux varietals makes for an easy to enjoy, go-to option with an added dimension of Antinori class.

Speaking of which, that same class is on full display in the towering 2021 Guado al Tasso. Racking up a bevy of outstanding press headlined by Galloni's massive 98-point review, the 2021 is a wine of "gorgeous sophistication" as described by James Suckling, marked by "crazy aromatic presence and feel" thanks to an elevated percentage of Cabernet Franc in the blend, which plays perfectly against the stunning quality of the Cabernet Sauvignon in this vintage. "The pedigree and purity of this red are evident immediately," notes Wine Spectator, as we'd fully expect from the hallowed cellars of Marchesi Antinori.

93JD 91WA

The 2023 Il Bruciato boasts a dark purple hue and exudes baked aromas of plum, pie spice, balsamic, and rich earth. Full-bodied, the palate is generous and rounded, with supple ripe tannins providing a fleshy sensation through the finish. I would prefer to enjoy this while it retains some freshness over the near term. This vintage is a blend of 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Cabernet Franc, 19% Merlot, and the remainder Syrah and Petit Verdot. 860,000 bottles produced.

The Marchesi Antinori 2023 Bolgheri Rosso Guado al Tasso Il Bruciato is an easy blend of Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The 2023 vintage reveals a more powerful and riper character compared to 2022. Baked flavors do come through in this latest vintage with prune and cooked plum. But you also get added sweetness from the barrel aging that imparts dustings of cinnamon and nutmeg. The tannins are soft and accessible.

2022 Thibaud Boudignon Anjou Blanc (750ml)

"[Boudignon's] attention to detail in the winemaking process, precise viticulture, dedication and passion for the terroirs mark him as one of France’s foremost vignerons and winemakers today." - Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate

Few winemakers have achieved such rapid ascent to cult status in the past two decades as Thibaud Boudignon. Once the long-time winemaker at Domaine de la Soucherie set out on his own, the critical and collectible aficionados took quick notice of his utterly uncompromising style and craftsmanship, and demand has been on an upward trajectory ever since. It's rare to find Boudignon's wines in any meaningful quantity, so tight are the allocations relative to their fanbase, so when we were offered this trio at jaw-dropping pricing, we jumped at it without a second thought.

Leading off, the 93-point 2022 Anjou Blanc is the perfect introduction to this remarkable domaine. "Medium-bodied, perfectly balanced with a seamless, layered texture," and displaying flawless varietal purity, it should be on the shortlist of anyone who's a fan of cult-caliber class for a bargain. Venturing into the single-vineyard wines, we truly see Boudignon's elite skills at work. The 94-point 2022 Clos de Fremine and 97-point 2021 Clos de la Hutte demonstrate clearly why Yohan Castaing declares, "[Boudignon] offers wines of purity, tension and finesse with virtually no rivals in Savennières." Showstopping terroir clarity and the potential for decades of cellar evolution put this duo firmly in the company of France's savviest cellar-worthy white wine buys, but as you might guess, our quantities are very limited, so collectors would be wise to strike quickly at this opportunity, especially at our must-see, market-best prices across the board.

93WA 92V

The 2022 Anjou Blanc from Thibaud Boudignon reveals a perfumed, exotic bouquet with aromas of green mango, pineapple, pear and spices intertwined with a touch of toast. More depth and fleshier than the 2021, it’s medium-bodied, perfectly balanced with a seamless, layered texture and a delicately bitter finish. 30,000 bottles produced.

93 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Jan 2024)

The 2022 Anjou Blanc is very restrained, with a delicate perfume of chamomile, spearmint and nectarine. There's a round richness to the wine's mid-palate, but it feels oh-so quiet. It's not showy but restrained, elegant and fine-boned, which is quite the feat in this dry, warm year. Despite no malolactic, the acidity is relatively low analysis-wise, but you don't feel it; it remains finely poised.

2020 Giodo Alberelli di Giodo Nerello Mascalese (750ml)
Nerello Mascalese from Sicily, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

Crafted by Italy’s legendary 100 pt. winemaker Carlo Ferrini from Sicily’s volcanic slopes, these top scoring Giodo Alberelli di Giodo selections offer a range of meticulously crafted red and white wines from “one of the world's most interesting, high-quality, yet value-driven categories” according to Eric Guido of Vinous, transparently expressing their unique Mount Etna terroir and value priced to enjoy now and over the next decade.

Inspired by a handful of perfectly situated vineyard sites on the slopes of Mount Etna, famed consulting enologist Carlo Ferrini established Giodo Alberelli after more than a decade of consulting with some of Sicily’s most renowned estates, naming it for the traditional low-bush vines in the region resembling little trees known as “alberelli” and releasing his first vintage to unanimous critical acclaim in 2016. Assembling a patchwork of parcels on Etna’s north-facing black lava terraces in the Sicilia DOC, Ferrini sourced the Giodo Alberelli wines from a range of small plots situated from 800 to 950 meters above sea level planted with low yielding, pre-phylloxera Nerello Mascalese vines averaging 80-100 years along with a tiny parcel of the indigenous white Carricante averaging 50 years of age. Boasting lush aromatics evocative of citrus and wild herbs, the zesty 95 pt. 2022 Giodo Alberelli di Giodo Sicilia Carricante reaffirms “that some of the most interesting wines from Etna today are the whites” according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, balancing crisp energetic fruit hinting of flinty crushed stone with saline acidity on a mouthwatering finish. Conveying its varied soils and elevations much like Pinot Noir grown in the Cote de Beaune, the elegant 96 pt. 2020 Giodo Alberelli di Giodo Nerello Mascalese reveals pure red earthy fruit with refined minerality and subtle integrated tannins on “a long, vibrant, fresh finish” according to Decanter’s James Button who sums it up simply as “beautiful,” while Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson declares the powerful and fresh 96 pt. 2021 Giodo Alberelli di Giodo Nerello Mascalese “oh so juicy and full of minerality,” both age worthy reds layered with old vine character and focused tannins promising to evolve over the next decade and beyond.

From the region described as “Italy’s most dynamic wine scene” by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, these top scoring Giodo Alberelli di Giodo selections are pure and refined expressions of Mount Etna’s volcanic terroir crafted by a master of Italian wine, value priced for Etna fans to stock the cellar and a stellar mixed case for wine lovers seeking to explore the region's best.

Carlo Ferrini's 2020 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese opens to a beautiful ruby hue and an elegantly lean appearance. The wine delivers tart cherry fruit, cassis, blue flower, iron ore and orange peel. The 2018 Lafite Rothschild is blended of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot and 0.5% Petit Verdot and has 13.3% alcohol. Deep purple-black in color, it needs a fair bit of swirling to unlock intoxicating scents of blackcurrant cordial, baked plums and black cherry compote with an undercurrent of dark chocolate, licorice, cast-iron pan, cedar chest and fertile loam, plus a waft of pencil lead. The delicately crafted, medium-bodied palate is dripping with class, featuring layers of mineral-laced black fruits and exquisitely ripe, singularly Lafite tannins, finishing with epic length and depth. This simply stunning, delicately crafted expression of 2018 with its singularly evocative imprint of Lafite will require a good 7-8 years in bottle, then should continue to inspire awe over the following 40+ years.

100 points, Wine Advocate (Mar 2021)

An immensely structured wine, this is complex, concentrated and yet so contained. The wine impresses with its balance, layers of succulent black-currant fruits and effortless style. A wine for the long term, it should not be touched before 2029.

100 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2021)

The 2018 Lafite Rothschild is deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a little swirling to unlock notes of baked plums, boysenberry preserves, and crème de cassis, with touches of menthol, Indian spices and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-filling, spicy black fruits with velvety tannins and a long, energetic finish.

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Feb 2023)

Wow. The aromas are so intense and refined at the same time, offering gorgeous blackcurrant, lead-pencil and orchid character. Such purity of fruit. Sleek and finely polished with a fine cut to the tannins that provide such grace and glamor. Yet, it’s got the power and structure to age for decades. On and on. Try after 2029.

99 points, James Suckling (Jan 2021)

Checking in as a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot, the 2018 Château Lafite-Rothschild is one of those magical Lafites that offers an already up-front, complex, nuanced style yet has the class and balance to evolve for 40-50 years. As always, this wine is never about sheer power, and the 2018 offers a full-bodied, incredibly elegant and weightless style that carries textbook blackcurrant fruits, lead pencil shavings, green tobacco, cedarwood, and camphor aromas and flavors. I compared this wine to a more elegant version of the 2016 from barrel and I think that comparison still holds. Incredibly up-front and charming, and already drinkable with sweet tannins, it will unquestionably pick up more complexity and nuance over the coming 4-6 years. It should hit maturity around age 10 and evolve for 75 years or more given its perfect balance. This is a beautiful, quintessential Lafite that exudes elegance and charm.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Lafite-Rothschild is a stunning wine. Silky and floral, the 2018 offers all the signatures of the Grand Vin, but amplified by the radiance of the year. In the glass, Lafite is rich and exotic, yet it also retains tremendous vibrancy. The interplay of Merlot picked early and Cabernet Sauvignon harvested late makes for wine of extraordinary dimension, complexity and class. Graphite, dark red fruit, spice and leather linger on the huge finish. Magnificent!

98 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

Silky and powerful, carefully delineated cassis and blueberry fruits, along with slate and liqourice. The tannins are in evidence but already showing a creaminess that cradles the fruit through the mid palate. I said this during En Primeur and during the first round of in bottle tastings, but this wine is remarkable for remaining so balanced and steady in a vintage that saw many neighbouring estates affected by the dry summer. Here instead you get floral aromatics with hints of raspberry leaf and honeysuckle, along with the classic graphite smoke. Muscular with coiled power, undoubtedly it will close down over the next five years, and then need a good decade to open back up. 3.75pH. 40hl/ha yield. 40% of the production went into the grand vin. Tannin index 74IPT. Retasted at an estate vertical July 2021.

98 points, Jane Anson (Oct 2021)

Perfumed on the nose with menthol, blackcurrant, liquorice, and creamy prunes, it is juicy and mellow on the palate, with chocolatey tannins. The relatively high alcohol (13.5%) reflects a hot and dry summer. Gentle yet powerful, the wine showcases an incredible concentration of black fruits, cedarwood, and roasted black coffee, leading into cassis. There is a soft grip towards the finish; it is ripe yet effortlessly elegant, like a fist hidden inside a velvet glove. The pure dark fruits linger endlessly. Tasted from magnum.

As always, we've sourced this latest set directly from Vignon's cellars, so fans of the estate can stock up on any or all of these critically acclaimed favorites for under $25 each. Led by a pair of "sensational" 2015s that each notched 94 points fromWine Advocate, these carry on Vignon's track record as one of the great iconoclastic talents in the Rhone today. The NV Arcane bottlings are no less impressive or singular.

Although this is a self-confidently rich and fleshy Cairanne, it also has a very well-crafted structure, the gentle tannins keeping the 15% alcohol on track. I love the dark, earthy finish that pulls you back to the glass for more. Drink or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (Apr 2022)

Black cherries and plums appear alongside hints of cedar and leather on the nose of the NV Cairanne Arcane La Temperance. It's full-bodied (labeled at 15% alcohol), yet not overly heavy, with silky tannins, peppery notes and even some brighter, raspberry-like nuances on the lingering finish. Given its structure and concentration, it should drink well for at least 4-5 years.

The 2019 Saint-Pierre is deep garnet-purple in color. It prances out with showy notes of blueberry pie, blackberry preserves, and blackcurrant cordial, plus suggestions of vanilla pod, chocolate box, and cinnamon toast, with a touch of violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers amazing freshness and vivacity, with layers of energetic black and blue fruits and a very finely grained texture, finishing long and perfumed.

97 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Feb 2023)

Very pretty and typical for the appellation with aromas of blackcurrants, violets and sandalwood that follow through to a full body with layers of polished tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Lasts a long time on the palate. Classic structure. Drink after 2027.

96 points, James Suckling (Dec 2022)

Violet-edged, with sculpted fruit and an enticing mix of precision and generosity, with classic St Julien balance. Great depth of fruit, crushed rocks, smoked earth, tobacco. Takes time to show itself, but there is sweet blackberry fruit here, and a purity of expression that has clear long-term potential. At this point they were working 15% organic, before switching to 100% the following year. 49% new oak. Harvest September 23 to October 4, Eric Boissenot consultant.

2023 Clos Henri Estate Sauvignon Blanc (750ml)

"Very fresh and clean with a mountain stream-like transparency. It’s light-bodied but has a density and tension as well as subtle and vivid flavors..." - James Suckling

Like many of the top properties in Chlie and Argentina that have been established by Bordeaux royalty, New Zealand's Clos Henri has its roots with a legendary French winemaking family. With ten generations of experience making some of Sancerre's finest wines, Domaine Henri Bourgeois knows a thing or two about Sauvignon Blanc, and it makes perfect sense that they'd set up shop in New World's most dynamic Sauv Blanc region. The 2023 vintage has already brought us one smash-hit from this pedigreed estate, and now we're back with another. With not one, not two, but three 93-point scores behind it, the 2023 Estate Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is a hallmark representation of the region's classic terroir as well as a testament to the unmatched depth of expertise that the Bourgois family brings to the world of Sauvignon Blanc. "Powerfully concentrated, energetic and alive" according toWine Advocate, the 2023 delivers superb value and world-class quality that outpace most contenders in the category.

93WA 93WE 93JS

The 2023 Sauvignon Blanc is powerfully concentrated, energetic and alive, with lashings of white spice, gooseberry, shortcrust pastry, tarragon/shaved fennel, aniseed, white chocolate and vanilla sponge. In the mouth, the acidity bolsters the fruit and makes for an explosive impact here. The wines from Clos Henri come highly recommended: founded by a tenth-generation Sancerre-based Bourgeois family, they have detailed viticulture and a respect for the terroir here in Marlborough. The fault line through the vineyard makes for an interesting topic of conversation. It all goes a long way to building a substantial story of place and style. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

93 points, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate (Dec 2024)

From a top biodynamic estate, this punches well above its price point, with none of the underripe Marlborough Sauvignon characteristics and all of the enticement of orchard blossoms and honey-drizzled citrus fruit. There's a signature stony mineral nuance at its core. The palate is harmonious with just-right acidity, lovely texture, flavor concentration and a long limey finish. Yum.

What an easy-drinking 2021 Cabernet from this legendary Napa producer. It's a beautifully classic wine with intensely aromatic, flavour-packed fruit redolent of blueberry, black cherry, and black raspberry, tinged with smoky cedarwood. The full-bodied palate is marked by persistent tannins and a satisfying finish revealing notes of earth, river stones, dried herbs, and a firm spine of acidity—a wine to enjoy throughout a great meal. Nearly half the fruit is sourced from Oakville, with additional grapes from Stags Leap District, Oak Knoll, Yountville, and Rutherford. A blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec, aged 18 months in French oak barrels.

95 points, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter (Sep 2024)

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville is straight-up fabulous, with pure cassis and darker blue-tinged fruit as well as notes of graphite, tobacco leaf, and spicy wood. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, gorgeously layered, elegant Cabernet Sauvignon with fine tannins and just a kiss of background oak. There are roughly 11,000 cases, so it shouldn't be too hard to find in the market, and it's going to drink well for at least 10-15 years.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2023)

Intense blackberries and black cherries on the nose lead to vivid focused cherries, blueberries and minty, spicy accents on the palate. Firm in tannins and fresh with good acidity, this outstanding wine is well-balanced. Enjoyable now but best from 2027.

94 points, James Suckling (Mar 2024)

An extroverted style, with a burst of mint and boysenberry notes leading off, followed by steeped plum and black currant preserve flavors. There's a nice graphite note running underneath the fruit before this ends with a licorice accent that rounds off the finish. Drink now through 2038. 900 cases made.
