2019 Belle-Vue (750ml)
Merlot from Haut-Medoc, Bordeaux, France

"Acknowledging that 2019 is already a heralded vintage, the salient question is whether it represents the summit of the 2018, 2019 and 2020 triumvirate. 'Yes' is the answer. I have always felt that is the case." - Neal Martin, Vinous

Of course, you may or may not agree with Martin in terms of 2019 place in the "trifecta," but it's undeniable that is a truly spectacular Bordeaux vintage that has more than lived up to its day-one hype since the wine's have hit the market, hit collector's cellars, and found their way into the glasses of impatient enthusiasts. Best of all, pricing has always been highly favorable compared to 2018 and 2020 (to say nothing of 2022), so the 2019s have also been some of the sharpest collectible buys on the market from the get-go and remain so today.

We've just landed a must-see treasure trove from this heralded campaign at ... you guessed it ... razor-sharp pricing cross the board, with superb performers in every classification and price tier.

Deep purple colour, medium to full intensity, and a feeling of confident tannic hold from the off. Such an impressive run of vintages at this Haut-Médoc property that has just been named Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel. The spice that Petit Verdot adds is clear, alongside well-brushed tannins, striking aromatics of brambly fruits. Not as luxuriously textured as in 2018 but in its place is a more serious outlook, and this is extremely sleek, elegant and well made.

93 points, Decanter (Jan 2022)

Rock star stuff readers should snatch up, the deep ruby/purple-hued 2019 Château Belle-Vue gives up a gorgeous bouquet of ripe currants, black cherries, tobacco, and cedar pencil. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, round, supple, elegant Haut-Médoc with velvety tannins, remarkable balance, and a great finish. It's a gorgeous bottle of wine that will keep for over a decade.

92 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

This fresher style of wine offers layers of black-currant acidity. They go with the ageworthy tannins to promise richness as the wine matures. Drink from 2025.

92 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Jul 2022)

The 2019 Belle-Vue has come together nicely. Powerful and earthy in the glass, the 2019 Belle-Vue is loaded with character. Tobacco, dried flowers, mint and dried flowers lend quite a bit of aromatic complexity. This super-expressive Haut-Médoc has quite a bit to offer.

91 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Aromas of mulberries, dark cherries, wet earth, soya and smoke. Medium-to full-bodied with firm tannins. Structured, with a fleshy texture and a fruity finish. 54% merlot, 26% cabernet sauvignon, 18% petit verdot. 1% cabernet franc and 1% carmenere. Drink from 2023.

91 points, James Suckling (Sep 2022)

The 2019 Belle-Vue is made of 54% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Carmenere. Deep garnet-purple in color, it has quite an earthy / savory nose of tar, truffles, and damp soil over a core of baked plums and boysenberries with a touch of dried herbs. Medium-bodied, soft, and well-crafted, it has bags of savory flavors and a fragrant, understated finish. This is a wine for those who prefer savory to fruity!

2018 Chateau Lafite Rothschild (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Pauillac, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Representing the upper echelon in the Bordeaux hierarchy, these top scoring vintages from two iconic First Growth estates are guaranteed not to disappoint, whether it's the "complexity, finesse and longevity" of Chateau Lafite Rothschild according to Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson or the signature "explosive depth" and "breathtaking purity of flavor" of Chateau Haut-Brion according to Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, another terrific opportunity to fill in the cellar with 100 pt. gems or treat yourself to the one of a kind pleasures that only First Growth Bordeaux can deliver in every vintage at best on the market pricing.

Spanning 112 hectares as the largest holding among the First Growths, the vineyards of Chateau Lafite Rothschild are located on rolling slopes of gravel up to ten meters deep in Pauillac, planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with less than half of the total production making the final cut and aged for 18-20 months in new French oak barrels made at the estate's onsite cooperage.Exhibiting Lafite's "undeniable class and charm" according to Jeb Dunnuck, these top scoring selections range from the refined 100 pt. 2015 Chateau Lafite Rothschild that's just entering its realm of approachability, described by Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson as "a truly classic Lafite" that's "understated and lyrical" to the magnificent triple 100 pt. 2020 Chateau Lafite Rothschild promising to "hit its 100th birthday in fine form" according to Jeb Dunnuck, every vintage revealing intensely aromatic, concentrated dark fruit with textbook graphite notes and layered silky tannins promising decades of longevity. Set among the contemporary suburbs of the city of Bordeaux, Chateau Haut-Brion's vineyards for the red Grand Vin span 50 hectares in Pessac-Leognan, planted almost evenly with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with small parcels of Cab Franc and Petit Verdot in a complex terroir ranging from limestone to sand to 18-meter-deep gravels interspersed with deep clay, the Grand Vin aged in mostly new French oak barrels for 22 months. With every vintage boasting its legendary ability to age, these thrilling selections range from the plush 100 pt. 2009 Chateau Haut-Brion offering the estate's signature ripe, opulent fruit elegantly balancing massive tannins to the 100 pt. 2020 Chateau Haut-Brion declared "a legend in the making" by Jeb Dunnuck and "ready to shine as the centerpiece of your collection for the next 40+ years" according to Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson.

A treasure trove of exceptional First Growths that will make it hard to choose, these top scoring blends from Chateau Lafite Rothschild and Chateau Haut-Brion range fromsome with over a decade of cellaring to more recent vintages requiring patient cellaring, all promising a thrilling evolution for decades to come and delivered in perfect provenance at best on the market pricing.

100WA 100WE 100WI 99JS 98JD 98V 98JA 98D

The 2018 Lafite Rothschild is blended of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot and 0.5% Petit Verdot and has 13.3% alcohol. Deep purple-black in color, it needs a fair bit of swirling to unlock intoxicating scents of blackcurrant cordial, baked plums and black cherry compote with an undercurrent of dark chocolate, licorice, cast-iron pan, cedar chest and fertile loam, plus a waft of pencil lead. The delicately crafted, medium-bodied palate is dripping with class, featuring layers of mineral-laced black fruits and exquisitely ripe, singularly Lafite tannins, finishing with epic length and depth. This simply stunning, delicately crafted expression of 2018 with its singularly evocative imprint of Lafite will require a good 7-8 years in bottle, then should continue to inspire awe over the following 40+ years.

100 points, Wine Advocate (Mar 2021)

An immensely structured wine, this is complex, concentrated and yet so contained. The wine impresses with its balance, layers of succulent black-currant fruits and effortless style. A wine for the long term, it should not be touched before 2029.

100 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2021)

The 2018 Lafite Rothschild is deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a little swirling to unlock notes of baked plums, boysenberry preserves, and crème de cassis, with touches of menthol, Indian spices and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers mouth-filling, spicy black fruits with velvety tannins and a long, energetic finish.

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Feb 2023)

Wow. The aromas are so intense and refined at the same time, offering gorgeous blackcurrant, lead-pencil and orchid character. Such purity of fruit. Sleek and finely polished with a fine cut to the tannins that provide such grace and glamor. Yet, it’s got the power and structure to age for decades. On and on. Try after 2029.

99 points, James Suckling (Jan 2021)

Checking in as a blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8.5% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot, the 2018 Château Lafite-Rothschild is one of those magical Lafites that offers an already up-front, complex, nuanced style yet has the class and balance to evolve for 40-50 years. As always, this wine is never about sheer power, and the 2018 offers a full-bodied, incredibly elegant and weightless style that carries textbook blackcurrant fruits, lead pencil shavings, green tobacco, cedarwood, and camphor aromas and flavors. I compared this wine to a more elegant version of the 2016 from barrel and I think that comparison still holds. Incredibly up-front and charming, and already drinkable with sweet tannins, it will unquestionably pick up more complexity and nuance over the coming 4-6 years. It should hit maturity around age 10 and evolve for 75 years or more given its perfect balance. This is a beautiful, quintessential Lafite that exudes elegance and charm.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Lafite-Rothschild is a stunning wine. Silky and floral, the 2018 offers all the signatures of the Grand Vin, but amplified by the radiance of the year. In the glass, Lafite is rich and exotic, yet it also retains tremendous vibrancy. The interplay of Merlot picked early and Cabernet Sauvignon harvested late makes for wine of extraordinary dimension, complexity and class. Graphite, dark red fruit, spice and leather linger on the huge finish. Magnificent!

98 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

Silky and powerful, carefully delineated cassis and blueberry fruits, along with slate and liqourice. The tannins are in evidence but already showing a creaminess that cradles the fruit through the mid palate. I said this during En Primeur and during the first round of in bottle tastings, but this wine is remarkable for remaining so balanced and steady in a vintage that saw many neighbouring estates affected by the dry summer. Here instead you get floral aromatics with hints of raspberry leaf and honeysuckle, along with the classic graphite smoke. Muscular with coiled power, undoubtedly it will close down over the next five years, and then need a good decade to open back up. 3.75pH. 40hl/ha yield. 40% of the production went into the grand vin. Tannin index 74IPT. Retasted at an estate vertical July 2021.

98 points, Jane Anson (Oct 2021)

Perfumed on the nose with menthol, blackcurrant, liquorice, and creamy prunes, it is juicy and mellow on the palate, with chocolatey tannins. The relatively high alcohol (13.5%) reflects a hot and dry summer. Gentle yet powerful, the wine showcases an incredible concentration of black fruits, cedarwood, and roasted black coffee, leading into cassis. There is a soft grip towards the finish; it is ripe yet effortlessly elegant, like a fist hidden inside a velvet glove. The pure dark fruits linger endlessly. Tasted from magnum.

2019 Chateau LaTour Martillac Rouge (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Latour-Martillac remains one of the great value estates on the Left Bank, and this is especially true in outstanding vintages like the ones on offer today. With classic Graves terroir and expert winemaking, these wines consistently punch way above their weight class, as you can clearly see in the bevy of excellent press that accompanies each one.

The highlights of the list are undoubtedly the 96-point 2019, which is "gorgeous, so bright and precise," delivering unreal bang for the buck at under $40, and the astounding 97-point 2022. Jeb Dunnuck dubs this powerhouse "a remarkably pure, medium to full-bodied Pessac-Léognan ... a brilliant 2022 that should be snatched up by readers." Of course, sharp-eyed collectors shouldn't over the 95-point 2018 or the "harmonious and well-defined" 2020.

Last but certainly not least, the estate's white has always served as a reference-point for the category, made in part from Semillon vines over 140 years old. With 94-point potential according to several critics, the 2023 Blanc is "beautifully textured, rich, yet still racy white with tons to love," proving once again that Graves' whites are sometimes every bit as compelling as its reds.

Whether you pick your favorite or go in for the whole vertical, you can rest assured you're getting some of the best quality-to-price character that the Left Bank has to offer.

96JD 95JS 94JA

I loved the 2019 Château Latour-Martillac, and I under-rated it from barrel. Revealing a dense ruby/plum color as well as a gorgeous bouquet of blackcurrants, black cherry, smoked tobacco, gravely earth, and chocolate, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, supple tannins, and one heck of a finish. It's beautifully done and will cruise for 25+ years in cold cellars. It needs plenty of air if drinking any time soon.

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

Sweet berry, spice, tobacco and dried rose-petal aromas. Full-bodied with beautifully integrated tannins and a creamy, polished texture. Refined and complex. One of the best young bottles ever from here. Better after 2025.

95 points, James Suckling (Mar 2022)

Beautiful depth to the flavours here, this is just gorgeous, so bright and precise, with cassis, blackberry, bilberry, raspberry, a real array of fruit flavours, textures and acidity levels combining to give real complexity. 40% new oak, harvest September 19 to October 11. Great freshness and juice on the finish; this is a superlative Latour Martillac.

2022 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (750ml)
Sangiovese from Montepulciano, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

It's rare that such a renowned and reference-point estate like Avignonesi keeps pushing new boundaries instead of just resting on their laurels, but that's exactly what this iconic property has been up to for several vintages. And as Eric Guido of Vinous puts it, "The results are pretty stunning." After all, these fan-favorite, best-selling Tuscan reds have been a staple of B-21's Italian portfolio for years, and the 95-point 2022 Vino Nobile di Montalcino follows right in line with its predecessors.

"Avignonesi’s flagship bottling remains a fantastic value for first-class Vino Nobile..." - Eric Guido, Vinous

The estate's pioneering approach of crafting this wine out of 100% Prugnolo Gentile (the local Sangiovese strain) has made it a singular expression that has helped define the entire Vino Nobile category. The 2022 vintage has resulted in "a layered and complex wine with fresh, elegant aromas" and a palate that's "with a medium to full body, high yet integrated acidity, fine chalky tannins and a firm, polished finish." All of it adds up to another stupendous overachiever at a remarkable price, which we've come to expect from Avignonesi at this point. It's all the more impressive considering you can stock up big and stash some away in the cellar – as Eric Guido notes, "it will be worth the wait."

95JS

A layered and complex wine with fresh, elegant aromas of balsamic, eucalyptus, bergamot, licorice, bark and cherry pits. Elegant on the palate as well, with a medium to full body, high yet integrated acidity, fine chalky tannins and a firm, polished finish. Drink or hold.

2022 Roucas Toumba Vacqueyras Les Restanques de Cabassole (750ml)
Grenache from Vacqueyras, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

We've been searching high and low for a top-notch Vacqueyras domaine to add to our direct-import stable, and last October we got more than we bargained for from Eric Boutelin's Roucas Toumba estate. The domaine is not nearly as well-known as it should be, given that he has some of the Vacqueyras appellation's most pristine, old-vine parcels and employs incredibly meticulous winemaking practices to give his vines their absolute best expression, resulting in what Wine Advocate's Yohan Castaing calls "some of the appellation’s most authentic and terroir-driven wines." After tasting through the latest releases, we couldn't agree more.

"The 2022 Vacqueyras les Restanques de Cabassole is a superb showing from this estate ... This is a serious Vacqueyras with depth, drive and aging potential." - Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate

The entire range is top-tier, and the 2022 Restanques de Cabassole is a true revelation of the absolute heights that Vacqueyras can reach and an absolutely showstopping effort that puts the appellation on another level altogether, notching 94+ points from Wine Advocate. B-21 Rhône Buyer Andrew Kitz calls it "a thoroughly complete expression of true Southern Rhône character, classic in every way."

"The purity and precision here are impressive, and the long, focused finish underscores its potential. This is a superb Vacqueyras..." - Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate

The 93-point 2023 La Grande Terre, another old-vine Grenache-based gem that's done entirely in concrete, which gives the wine absolutely stunning purity of fruit with "supple and enveloping" textural precision. Where the Restanques certainly needs time in the cellar to show all its cards, the Grande Terre is a thrilling preview that is accessible now, with the substance and craftsmanship to develop its own mesmerizing nuances over time, as well.

Vacqueyras has long lived in the shadow of Gigondas, but with efforts like these from Eric Boutelin, we're extremely excited to showcase the rising tide of quality in this excellent but overlooked appellation. There's no question that Boutelin's star is rising, and we're thrilled to add him to our direct-import portfolio, with two of the sharpest Rhône buys we've seen all year.

94WA 94AK

The 2022 Vacqueyras les Restanques de Cabassole is a superb showing from this estate, delivering a powerful yet refined expression of Vacqueyras. A blend of 60% Grenache Noir, 30% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre grown on marl, clay and calcareous sand soils, it offers up a deeply aromatic bouquet of crushed violets, wild spices, Timut pepper and ripe black fruits. Full-bodied and layered, it’s built around a dense, fleshy core of fruit, framed by velvety tannins and energized by a bright spine of acidity. Despite its concentration, the wine never feels heavy, concluding with a saline, ethereal finish that speaks to its underlying finesse. This is a serious Vacqueyras with depth, drive and aging potential.

94+ points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Oct 2025)

Eyebrows raised all around when we tasted Eric Boutelin’s 2022 Restanques Vacqueyras. Cutting right to the chase, it’s a thoroughly complete expression of true Southern Rhône character, classic in every way. Reticent notes of hot stones, fine dried herbs, and deep, dark fruit line the bouquet, very captivating yet restrained, tinged by hot asphalt, peppery spices, and dried violets. The palate is a picture of precision, its exceptional weight carried by wonderfully balanced, assertive yet finessed tannins and pinpoint acidity. The flavors take some coaxing, but that same depth from the nose is there in spades. Brooding dark fruits, earthy soil tones, iron, wild game, and fine floral accents come in well-defined succession to a lasting finish. It’s obvious this wine has some serious evolution in store. It’s absolutely enjoyable now for its undeniably classic personality, but it will become truly exceptional after several years in the cellar, especially considering the price.

2019 Michel Arnould & Fils Heuristique Grand Cru Extra Brut Millesime (750ml)
Sparkling from Champagne, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

The Côte des Blancs seems to get the majority of attention in Champagne's Grand Cru sphere, but you're short-changing yourself in a big way if you're not famiiiar with Verzenay, a Pinot Noir-centric village in the northeast side of the Montagne de Reims. And in Verzenay, one of the undisputed names to know is Michel Arnould. Now run by Michel's son Patrick, his son-in-law Thierry, and grandson Thomas, this is a true family operation that does everything with an eye to the future, in an innovative style that stays pure and true to their Verzenay roots. Their deep range is full of must-try gems, but the 2019 Heuristique was the standout hit during our visit in April.

"What a fine introduction to this marvelous, hidden-gem domaine!"

- Andrew Kitz, B-21 Champagne Buyer

A 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, it shows the wide-ranging skill-set and top-notch vineyard pedigree that goes into these wines. It's "an enchanting combination of vivid freshness and depth" as Andrew describes it, the Chardonnay providing almost endlessly bright, charming aromatics and flavors and the Pinot Noir offering luxurious weight and a robust foundation. Despite the challenges of the growing season, the quality in the end was undoubtedly high, especially for Chardonnay, and you can see that clearly in the Heurisitique's superb interplay of "concentrated vinosity" and lasting energy. In a market where vintage grower Champagnes, especially from Grand Cru terroir, are shooting upward in price, to find one under $50 is an absolute steal.

93AK

Even though the Verzenay Grand Cru village is prime Pinot Noir country, our new direct-import domaine Michel Arnould also has a Midas touch with Chardonnay, and it comes through in spades in the 2019 Heuristique. This 50/50 blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay is very much driven by the latter, with an enchanting combination of vivid freshness and depth. The nose leads with ripe red apple and Anjou pear, racy chalky minerality, and perfumed acacia blossom. With a little air, deeper notes of white peach and soft, toasty sur lie emerge. The palate likewise shows the energy of Chardonnay in this excellent vintage, with its gorgeous tension, as flavors of lemon confit and pear vie for position with riper notes of an almost tropical character. The weight of the Pinot Noir shows up on the mid-palate as a concentrated vinosity that introduces a lifted, drawn-out finish of white floral high tones and chalky undercurrent. It’s certainly very compelling now, but the purity and pedigree of the vintage will undoubtedly reveal much more personality in the years to come. What a fine introduction to this marvelous, hidden-gem domaine!

2022 Jean-Marc Burgaud Morgon Cote du Py James (750ml)
Gamay from Morgon, Beaujolais, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

We just solidified arguably our most exciting new direct-import relationship this year from a true Beaujolais icon, and we're kicking it off with a spectacular offer exclusively for our private clients. Dubbed the "the don of Morgon" by Neal Martin and "a winemaker at the peak of his powers" by William Kelley, Jean-Marc Burgaud is unquestionably among the elite in Beaujolais, and his wines are roundly coveted by fans and collectors, yet they remains some of the sharpest QPR buys in all of France.

"The 2022 Morgon Côte du Py James, succulent and complex, is one of the best showings for the vintage for this famous lieu-dit." - Kenna Wells, Wine Advocate

Over the years, Jean-Marc has undergone quite the transformation in his winemaking technique, resulting in the benchmark expressions we know and love today. He's an ardent proponent of Morgon's exceptional individual terroirs, and his classic, semi-carbonic winemaking aims to express each parcel to its fullest. Burgaud's Cote du Py James is his perennial magnum opus, sourced from a parcel at the very top of the appellation's most iconic lieu-dit. The 2022 vintage yielded perfect conditions for this wine, endowing it with full-on fruit expression that somehow still remains finessed and restrained, guided by nascent secondary complexity that portends long aging potential, as is the case with almost all of Jean-Marc's wines. We'll say it again – we couldn't be more thrilled with this new partnership because our direct access to Jean-Marc's cellars brings the collectible gem to our private clients at a jaw-dropping, sub-$30 price that you won't see anywhere else.

96JS 95WA

Wonderful interplay of spicy oak with savory and blackberry aromas on the nose. Ample but beautifully integrated tannins on the medium- to full-bodied palate. Very long, firmly structured finish. From the top of the Cote du Py hill, matured in 10-year-old oak barrels. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

96 points, Stuart Pigott, James Suckling (Mar 2024)

The 2022 Morgon Côte du Py James, succulent and complex, is one of the best showings for the vintage for this famous lieu-dit. The nose is rich with grilled blackberries, licorice, cigar box and underbrush, followed by a medium to full-bodied, well-structured palate. The wine shows the most tannins of the range, chalky in texture, though integrated nicely into the layered core. Although strong on their own, the black-fruited flavors take a back seat to deeper, complex notions of iron and licorice on the mid-palate and back end. The wine glides along the palate with finesse, never feeling chunky, culminating in a lengthy, flavorful finish of high precision.

"By any measure, 2023 is a magnificent vintage." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Galloni isn't the only voice to be singing the praises of Napa's 2023 vintage. Winemakers and critics alike seem over the moon about the uniformly high quality of this cool, long growing season. Jeb Dunnuck already compares it to another modern classic: "Across the board, the 2023s stand out for their purity, vibrancy, and elegance, yet they still deliver depth, richness, and concentration. The top 2023s are unquestionably on the level of the 2016s." What this means for wine lovers is that there are tremendous bargains to be found if you know where to look, something that is becoming a rare occurrence in today's Napa market. Today's offer brings together a handful of the top QPR releases to hit the market recently, all at sub-$40 pricing and all showing the same combination of youthful expression and solid cellar potential, the hallmark of this great vintage.

The 94-point 2023 HGIII blend from cult phenom Hourglass is a "charming, sexy beauty" based on Merlot, crafted by winemaker Tony Biagi to be an immediately accessible, captivating expression that Napa fans can indulge in without hesitation. "It's medium to full-bodied, round, supple, and balanced, with some classic Napa richness and depth," notes Jeb Dunnuck.Turnbull's Estate Cab has been one of the most consistent values in Napa for years, and the excellent 2023 vintage produced another "positively stellar" show-stopper to the tune of 93 points from Dunnuck. Wine Advocate's Joe Czerwinski also calls it "a super value and the rare modern-day Napa Cab under $100 that shows potential for further aging."

Of course, Napa's household names also showcase extreme value in 2023. The 94-point 2023 Frank Family Napa Valley Cab is a proven, pedigreed example of classic Napa style and a cool, "old-school" growing season, the likes of which produced many of Napa's legendary wines during the Valley's golden age. The 2023 is "a refined and complete example of Napa cabernet sauvignon showing all the poise and freshness of the cool vintage," as noted by James Suckling. Clos du Val's 2023 is "bright, aromatic, and punchy ... seriously beautiful from start to finish," while the "smooth and textural," 93-point 2023 Silverado appellation bottling offers all the features that have made this estate a fan-favorite for decades.

We'll say it time and time again – finding any Napa red with a rock-solid score and premium pedigree under $40 is a search for a needle and a haystack, but with this line-up of proven overachievers, we've got five needles in hand for savvy Napa fans to stock up on.

Soft and supple aromas of black currants, dark chocolate, black olives, potpourri and graphite. The palate is smooth and textural, with firmly framed tannins, bright acidity and a long finish. A lovely blend of 81% cabernet sauvignon with small amounts of the other four Bordeaux varieties. Drink or hold.

2023 Roucas Toumba Vacqueyras La Grande Terre (750ml)

93WA

A compelling effort from this address, the 2023 Vacqueyras la Grande Terre is a beautifully composed Vacqueyras crafted from 60% old-vine Grenache Noir grown on galets roulés, 20% Mourvèdre planted on yellow clay and 20% Syrah rooted in blue marl. Aged and vinified entirely in concrete, it jumps from the glass with a perfumed bouquet of ripe black cherries, wild berries, crushed violets, rose petals and hints of lilac. Medium- to full-bodied, it’s supple and enveloping, with a layered core of fruit and velvety tannins that build across the palate. The purity and precision here are impressive, and the long, focused finish underscores its potential. This is a superb Vacqueyras that should drink well on release and evolve gracefully for a decade or more.

2021 Cordero di Montezemolo Barolo Monfalletto (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"Alberto Cordero di Montezemolo's 2021 Barolos are terrific ... I found the wines super-impressive." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

In a region like Piedmont, where nearly every estate has deep historical roots, Cordero Montezemolo still stands out, with 19 generations of the same family tending this prized property on La Morra's Monfalletto hill. To get sense of how special the property is, you only need to experience the 95-point 2021 Monfalletto Barolo and its utterly transparent, pure terroir personality. "A beautiful, highly pleasing Barolo," it's a unbelievable value, especially in the modern classic 2021 vintage.

While the estate is nearly contiguous around La Morra, it boasts one particular anomaly – a pristine parcel in Castiglione Falletto's Villero cru. The 97-point 2021 Enrico VI is emblematic of the Villero cru's iron-rich soils, limestone substrate, and southwest exposure, and the resulting wine "transmits a sense of electricity and tension that is always unique to this site," according to Wine Advocate's Monica Larner. Interestingly, the estate gives its single-cru wines shorter elevage than the village-level Monfalletto, so the site transparency is amplified even more, a certain advantage in an incredible vintage like 2021. "A deep, statuesque Barolo with tons of Villero personality ... This is impressive," notes Galloni, for its "notable presence and structure."

For ultra-classic, singular Barolo terroir, avid collectors and fans can't do much better than this stunning pair at market-best pricing.

95JS 93WA 93V 93WS 93WE

An intense, deep, vibrant wine full of spicy aromas of mint, licorice, balsamic, eucalyptus, dried violets and prunes. The attack is supple and dense, with a full body, refreshing acidity and firm tannins that are velvety and refined. Still austere in the finish, with the potential for aging. Try from 2027.

95 points, Aldo Fiordelli, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

The Cordero di Montezemolo 2021 Barolo Monfalletto comes from various vineyards near the winery in La Morra. This wine offers a plump, slightly ripe fruit profile with black cherry, damson plum and menthol. This remains genuine and pretty all the while. It doesn't show the exacting depth of the top wines, but this well-priced Barolo delivers good cheer over a more accessible style. This is a release of 54,000 bottles.

93 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jun 2025)

The 2021 Barolo Monfalletto is gorgeous. Deep, pliant and expressive, the 2021 has a lot to offer. I would give this a few years in the cellar, as it is quite concentrated and deep. Black cherry, leather, spice, incense and licorice build nicely, leading to a rich, sumptuous finish. The Monfalletto is a beautiful, highly pleasing Barolo. All it needs is a bit of time to shed some of its considerable baby fat.

93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2025)

This is supple and spicy, its cherry, raspberry and rose flavors framed by a light touch of oak. Balanced and elegant, with refined tannins. Fine length. Best from 2028 through 2043. 4,600 cases made, 2,100 cases imported.

93 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Dec 2025)

Dark cherries and ripe forest fruits emerge with brooding intensity, showing Monfalletto's robust personality. The wine flexes its muscles across the palate, where dusty tannins build steadily before exploding on the finish, demonstrating a powerful yet controlled expression of Barolo's classic structure. 2022 Chateau LaTour Martillac Rouge (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

97JD 95WE 95JS

Cassis, blackcurrants, smoky tobacco, and scorched earth notes all emerge from the 2022 Château Latour-Martillac, a remarkably pure, medium to full-bodied Pessac-Léognan that has a great mid-palate, pure, polished tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. Based on 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot, it's a brilliant 2022 that should be snatched up by readers.

97 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2025)

The wine's white fruit and toast aroma ie echoed by the spice and sliced apple flavor from the hot, dry year. Ripe, with a hint of honey to set against the citrus acidity, the wine is a classic from this classed growth estate. Drink from 2026.

An attractive Latour-Martillac showing ripe black cherries, dark plums and touches of cigar and fine spices. An underlying mineral twist makes it even more interesting.

This is a great vintage from Lafite. The profile is rich in feel, with a seriously firm tannic structure. Solid, complex and with great authority, this Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant wine is impressively dense in dark-fruit tones. It will age for many years. Drink from 2027, although that would almost be too soon.

"The writing is on the wall ... Mount Etna has established itself as one of the most essential viticultural areas in the world." - Eric Guido, Vinous

What was once an afterthought (or even out of thought) of the Italian wine scene, Sicily, and Mount Etna in particular, are now seeing a sky-rocketing level of attention from critics and consumers alike. Homegrown names like Terre Nere (a long-time B-21 favorite) and Pietradolce, as well as cult darlings like Arianna Occhipinti, have put the region on the map, and now we're seeing exceptionally talented winemakers from the mainland set up shop and put their talents to work on the singular varietals and vineyards that dot this volcanic landscape.

Giovanni Rosso is the source of perennially acclaimed Barolos from the estate's plots in famed sites such as Cerretto and Vignarionda, and now under fourth-generation winemaker Davide Rosso, the estate has acquired parcels and expanded into Mount Etna with exceptional results. This pair of gems exemplifies both Rosso's pure winemaking philosophy and pure volcanic terroir. The 2022 Rosso has notched 95 points from James Suckling for its "perfumed and graceful" style, while the 94-point 2024 Bianco is "fragrant, [with] a ton of personality ... A delicious, moreish wine," according to Jane Anson.

There's no shortage of new discoveries and sleeper stars waiting for you in Sicily, but this pair from Giovanni Rosso should be near the top of your list if you want to get a crystal clear introduction to this amazing, rising-star category.

95JS 93WA 93JA

Perfumed and graceful, showing an intense floral bouquet of violets, roses and jasmine as well as blood oranges and strawberries with whiffs of marzipan and stony minerality. The attack is smooth with a lot of fruit sweetness, full body, vibrant flavors and elegant tannins. Crunchy in the end, this has a long, juicy finish with citrus notes.

95 points, Aldo Fiordelli, James Suckling (Jun 2025)

The Giovanni Rosso 2022 Etna Rosso Contrade Nuove has a little more textural heft with dark fruit aromas due to the warm summer growing conditions on the volcano. This vintage was hot but cooled down by rain at the right times. Vintner Davide Rosso says that Nerello Mascalese tends to go into reduction and can produce green tannins. His solution is to allow more oxygen in winemaking with the use, for example, of amphorae, which tend to be more porous. Conical oak vats and stainless steel are also used. This pretty wine offers bright fruit, cherry and crushed roses.

93 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Apr 2025)

Always look forward to tasting this wine, with its jewel ruby colour, and fresh fragrant aromatics, crunchy cranberry and red cherry fruit, soft tobacco, a touch of campfire smoke, integrated tannins, traces of bitter orange rind on the finish. "Ric Forman's 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is shaping up to be epic. A wine of unreal precision and energy, the 2019 dazzles with its magnificent purity and class."

-Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Ric Forman's status as a cult Napa pioneer is well-established, with a critical track record to match the best of them. His 11-acre Howell Mountain property is the source of his expertly crafted, classically styled Cabernets, which he has been turning out since 1983. Perfectly justified in resting on his laurels, Ric instead keeps knocking out the hits, as we clearly see in the stellar, 97-point 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon.

Three distinct parcels make up Forman's vineyard, and each one lends its own particular touch to the finished wine, while Forman's own traditionalist winemaking methods ensure a consistency of style and excellence that few in Napa can match. The wine's "remarkable textural intensity" is a hallmark Forman calling card, and it portends a long life in the cellar, as is the case with almost every vintage he's ever made. We just sourced a must-see parcel at unbeatable pricing, not only on the regular 750ml format, but also on large-format 1.5L magnums. It's a can't-miss opportunity for serious Napa collectors to load up on a genuine classic from a generational winemaking talent.

97V 96JD

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is a rich, heady wine. Even though it was just bottled, the 2019 possesses remarkable textural intensity. A whole range of floral and savory notes open as this statuesque Cabernet shows off its personality. This is an especially rich, bombastic Cabernet from Ric Forman. That is especially evident when tasted next to the 2018.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2022)

Similarly hued, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley offers a classic, old school Napa Cabernet nose of darker currants, green tobacco, spring flowers, camphor, and new leather. As with the 2018, it plays in a more medium to full-bodied, elegant style, has ripe yet certainly present tannins, and a great finish. The 2019 is more accessible and open than the 2018 and should continue drinking brilliantly for another two decades if stored correctly.

"The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape is some serious Provençal goodness..." - Jeb Dunnuck

We love an unexpected surprise as much as anyone, and this was certainly one. We just secured a parcel of Beaucastel's iconic Châteauneuf bottling from 2022 at a razor-sharp price that presents a can't-miss reload opportunity for fans and collectors. As any Rhône enthusiast surely knows by now, 2022 was an excellent vintage for all of Southern Rhône, with the warm, dry conditions playing perfectly to the Beaucastel style of concentration, structure, and cellar longevity.

Led by 97 points from James Suckling, the 2022's critical line is loaded with praise. "A textured, layered, precise red ... So integrated. Lively and focused, with plenty of energy and verve," declares Suckling. Jeb Dunnuck compares it to the powerhouse 2009 rendition, and Wine Advocate's Yohan Castaing calls it, "perfectly balanced with a structured, textured and seamless mid-palate enhanced by velvety tannins and a peppery, delicate and long finish." If you're the impatient type, you'll find a lot to love in the 2022, but like all great vintages of Beaucastel, this one is built for the long haul, so don't hesitate to load up and watch it blossom into a reference-point Châteauneuf over the coming two decades.

97JS 96D 95JD

A textured, layered, precise red, showcasing aromas of cherries, raspberries, warm herbs, bay leaves and baking spices. It’s medium- to full-bodied with silty, beautifully melted tannins. So integrated. Lively and focused, with plenty of energy and verve complementing the ripe red fruit and dried herbs. Intense stream of spices in the long, flavorful finish. From organically grown grapes. Try after 2027.

97 points, James Suckling (Sep 2024)

Dark and inky in colour this year. It’s fresh in its berry fruits, really quite powerful, with muscular tannins and driving acidity behind. A dense, dark and brooding vintage of Beaucastel. The aromatic precision however is extremely impressive: elderberry, sloe and blackberry. It’s solid and will age well. Do not drink this young, as it will likely disappoint if opened too early. Grenache and Cinsault fermented in cement, Syrah and Mourvèdre fermented in foudres. Syrah and Counoise are whole bunch fermented.

96 points, Matt Walls, Decanter (Sep 2023)

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape is some serious Provençal goodness, with just about overflowing aromas and flavors of sweet raspberries, blackberries, peppery garrigue, and Provençal spices. It has the sunny, expressive, complex style of the vintage, medium to full-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and a great finish. As with most 2022s, it has plenty of upfront charm yet solid underlying tannins as well. It reminds me slightly of the 2009 and will have two decades of longevity.

2019 Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva (750ml)
Sangiovese from Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

B-21 Brunello mainstay Caparzo has experienced a stellar ascent under the ownership of Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini since 1998, and they're arguably producing their best wines ever. At least, that's our take from this trio of fantastic new releases from winemaker Massimo Bracalente.

The 2020 vintage's best wines strike a remarkable balance that defies the warm growing conditions, and Caparzo nails that sweet spot perfectly with this 95-point normale bottling. "This is really pretty ... Creamy and so polished. It goes on for minutes. A graceful and complex 2020 Brunello," notes James Suckling, hinting at one of the vintage's finest virtues, its approachability in the near term. While some 2020s are indeed blockbusters of huge structure and ripeness, they lack the graceful balance that defines the best Brunellos, but fans of the world's best Sangioveses can rest assured that all the varietal's most striking and important features can be found in spades in this stunning expression of "ample energy and dimension."

The most prized parcel on the estate is the old-vine plot next to the historic Tuscan farmhouse, appropriatey called Vigna La Casa, from which comes the La Casa bottling, a sterling terroir expression that always takes the estate's signature style to the next level. "A real charmer with ripe tannins, even, seamless acidity, and a great finish," notes Jeb Dunnuck's Italy critic Audrey Frick in her 96-point review. The 2020 La Casa boasts "otherworldly" balance per Vinous' Eric Guido, and James Suckling even floats the proposition that it could outpace the prodigious 2019 vintage.

Finally, the 2019 Brunello Riserva releases are finally hitting the market, and they're delivering on all the promise and hype the vintage has received since the reviews started coming out. As good as the 2019 normale and La Casa wines were from Caparzo, we knew the Riserva would be a knock-out, and it's here and ready to prove us correct. "The Caparzo 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva makes a terrific first impression thanks to the intensity of its dark fruit aromas and its well-integrated spice. This is a full-bodied wine with deep layers of richness and velvety tannins," writes Monica Larner for Wine Advocate. This is a classically styled Brunello that will cruise in the cellar thanks to its "dramatic length and structure," as Vinous' Eric Guido describes it, shining right alongside previous best-selling, benchmark vintages like 2015 and 2016.

96JS 94WA 94V 94WS 94WI 94D

Restrained, vibrant and fruity riserva with red cherries and raspberries, potpourri and even incense. Medium- to full-bodied with leafy flavor, velvety and ripe tannins yet chewy acidity and a chalky finish. Good blood-orange aftertaste. Better in two or three years but already so delicious.

96 points, James Suckling (Dec 2024)

In the bottle with the black label, the Caparzo 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva makes a terrific first impression thanks to the intensity of its dark fruit aromas and its well-integrated spice. This is a full-bodied wine with deep layers of richness and velvety tannins. There is a hint of concentrated fruit sourness (and sweetness too, from the grape skins) that will subside as this 20,000-bottle release takes on more age in the cellar.

94 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Nov 2024)

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva opens with a mentholated freshness, blending crushed rocks and mint with hints of tobacco, flowery underbrush and dried black cherries. Silken and serene, this displays notable weight and concentration while maintaining freshness. Waves of texturally ripe wild berry fruits. and fine-grained tannins cake the senses. The 2019 finishes with dramatic length and structure, leaving a tinge of licorice to linger on.

94 points, Eric Guido, Vinous (Nov 2024)

This is lively, displaying fresh cherry, blackberry, plum, black pepper, earth and menthol flavors. Ripe, dense and lifted by formidable tannins. All of the components seem to be in the right place as this finds its equilibrium on the lingering finish. Best from 2027 through 2043. 1,250 cases made, 200 cases imported.

94 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Mar 2025)

Dark berry compote on the nose, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva offers notes of wild fresh herbs, clove, and a touch of balsamic. The palate shows herbal freshness and a taut acidity, slightly rustic crunchy tannins, and a medium-long savory finish. No need to wait as this wine is drinking with pleasurable forwardness.

94 points, Vanessa Conlin, Wine Independent (Dec 2024)

Made since 1980, Caparzo’s Riserva is selected at harvest by consulting oenologist team, Paolo and Jacopo Vagaggini. It ages primarily in large Slavonian oak casks with a short passage in French oak tonneaux of 750 litres. Still youthfully restrained, the nose flirts with cedar, leather and heather, then the palate changes gear with its overtly powerful drive of substantial yet sophisticated chalky tannins and brisk acidity. By comparison, subtle flavours of wet stone and polished red cherry seem polite and tame for the time being. This will need time to develop into its full expression.

2020 Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino La Casa (750ml)

97JS 95WS 95WI

This is really pretty, with cherry, peach, and orange-peel character. It’s medium-bodied with very fine tannins and a long, long finish. Creamy and so polished. It goes on for minutes. A graceful and complex 2020 Brunello. Is this better than the 2019? Drink after 2027, but already beautiful to taste.

97 points, James Suckling (Sep 2024)

Though compact and tightly knit, this red delivers a beam of strawberry, raspberry, mineral and spice flavors, and there's a hint of milk chocolate as this plays out on the finish. Offers beautiful balance and a resonant aftertaste. Best from 2028 through 2046. 1,666 cases made, 416 cases imported.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Mar 2025)

Quite pale in color, the 2020 Casa has appealing aromatic notes of strawberry jam, white chocolate, fresh rose petal, and underbrush. Quite enjoyable now, it offers medium concentration, supple tannins, and a sweeping fresh acidity that lifts the finish.

One of the Italian jewels of our growing Direct Import portfolio, Le Cinciole is a name that fans of ultra-classic Tuscan reds need to know.

"I was once again deeply impressed with Le Cinciole. Valeria Viganò and Luca Orsini have quietly turned Le Cinciole into one of the leading estates in all of Italy ... Readers should do everything they can to check out these new releases." -

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

The 2021 Aluigi Campo ai Peri Gran Selezione continues a recent run of stratospheric accolades that this cuvee has racked up from Antonio Galloni, who lauds it as "detailed and vibrant in the glass, with captivating energy." From a single parcel of vines on the region's famed galestro soils, the "terrific" 2021 is a quintessential Sangiovese expression, "is balanced and bright with a pretty sense of fruit purity and focus" according to Monica Larner, which should be snatched up by savvy buyers at our unbeatable price.

The 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Aluigi Campo ai Peri is another stunning wine from Le Cinciole. Detailed and vibrant in the glass, with captivating energy, the Aluigi sizzles with tension. Crushed flowers, mint, blood orange, rose petal and spice soar out of the glass. I especially admire its vertical energy and explosive personality. The 2021 spent two years in cask and a year in cement prior to bottling. What a wine!

"Readers seeking Napa Cabernets from the 2021 vintage with serious cellaring potential should consider stocking up on Smith Madrone's offerings, as these '21s are true cellar-worthy gems." - Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter

Stu and Charlie Smith have been quietly making some of the most classic, old-school Napa Cabs on the market since 1972. Perched high up on their rural property atop Spring Mountain, the brothers have largely avoided the glitz & glamour rat race that is the modern Napa wine scene. Instead, they stick to the fundamentals, beginning with their 15-hectare, prized Cabernet Sauvignon block planted in 1971. Indeed, James Suckling calls Smith-Madrone "a staunch defender of the restrained, elegant style of Napa reds made in the 1970s."

The 2021 vintage was tailor-made for the classicists, an outstanding campaign of ideal conditions, and the wines have proven themselves to be modern benchmarks. The 2021 Smith-Madrone Estate Cabernet is a knockout with a pair of 97-point reviews leading an impressive critical line. "A Cabernet that exemplifies how the variety became so popular: classic, structural, aromatic, and finessed. "A Cabernet that exemplifies how the variety became so popular: classic, structural, aromatic, and finessed. An impossible find for the price." That about sums it up from Wine Enthusiast. In a category that is becoming prohibitively expensive for many wine lovers, the 2021 Smith-Madrone takes us back to Napa's golden years, not in terms of style, but in terms of value as well.

A Cabernet that exemplifies how the variety became so popular: classic, structural, aromatic, and finessed. An impossible find for the price, enjoy now for palate cleansing structure, or continue to age for deeper pleasure.

97 points, Elaine Chukan Brown, Wine Enthusiast (May 2025)

From brothers Stu and Charlie Smith comes their 2021 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon from Spring Mountain, a precise blend of 81.9% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17.7% Cabernet Franc, and 0.4% Petit Verdot. Aged for 18 months in 65% new French oak, with only 1,652 cases produced, this wine showcases the meticulous dry farming of their 15.4-hectare vineyard at a 579-metre elevation, with vines dating back to 1971. The 2021 vintage is yet another testament to their mastery, offering a purity and elegance that define these Cabernets, with impeccable structure for long-term cellaring. In 2021, the tannins are firm, soaring, built like sky-scrapers, yet remarkably well-integrated. The nose offers a beautiful black cherry and red currant potpourri, mingling with pressed wildflowers, sage, capsicum, and tobacco leaf. Juicy plum fruit intertwines with a graphite minerality, and while there’s notable density to the fruit, a fine backbone of crunchy acidity imparts a stunning lightness and lift. Readers seeking Napa Cabernets from the 2021 vintage with serious cellaring potential should consider stocking up on Smith Madrone's offerings, as these '21s are true cellar-worthy gems.

The 2016 Haut-Brion is blended of 56% Merlot, 37.5% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6.5% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the nose is at once profound and arresting, offering drop-dead gorgeous Morello cherries, lilacs and red rose scents with a core of Black Forest cake, warm blackcurrants and blueberry preserves plus wafts of sandalwood and underbrush. Medium-bodied, the elegantly crafted palate is completely packed with intense floral, mineral and cassis-laced flavors with a firm frame of very finely pixelated tannins and seamless freshness, finishing very long and achingly stunning.

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Nov 2018)

The 2016 Haut-Brion is quite possibly even more magnificent from bottle than it was from barrel. Powerful and rich, yet not at all heavy, the 2016 is a wine of nearly indescribable beauty. Haut-Brion is often a thrilling wine, but it is rarely this finessed in its youth. Gravel, cure meat, tobacco and cedar are some of the many nuances that develop with air, but it is an extraordinary sense of harmony that really stands out. What a wine!

100 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2019)

Immensely tannic, this is a great Haut-Brion, one of the finest for many years. It shows the severe side of this estate, with a dense structure to match the powerful black fruits. Rich with berry flavors and lifted by enough acidity, the wine will age for many years. Drink from 2026.

100 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2019)

Stunning black fruit with plenty of forest berries in there, the whole picture cool and very delicate, also on the concentrated and highly structured palate. The tannins are very fine-grained, but decisively austere and, together with the vibrant acidity, they propel the finish out towards infinity and leave a breathtaking final impression. A blend of 56 per cent merlot, 37.5 per cent cabernet sauvignon and 6.5 per cent cabernet franc. Very long aging potential, but you could try it in 2023.

100 points, James Suckling (Dec 2019)

As to the reds, the 2016 Haut Brion is a prodigious, legendary wine in the making, although it’s not for those seeking instant gratification. Deeper colored and more concentrated than the La Mission Haut Brion, it reveals a purple/ruby color as well as a sensational bouquet of blackcurrants, cassis, cigar tobacco, cold fireplace, violets, and lead pencil. Deep, masculine, structured, and mineral-laced, it has a stacked mid-palate, full-bodied richness, building tannins, and a firm, blockbuster styled finish that lasts for close to a minute. A wine for the ages, don’t even think about opening bottles for at least 7-8 years. It should keep for half a century. The blend in 2016 is 56% Merlot, 37.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6.5% Cabernet Franc.

98+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2019)

Large and in charge, this has a prodigious core of steeped plum, black currant and loganberry fruit flavors that show both compote and coulis aspects. While that steeps, this delivers a sturdy frame of roasted mesquite, smoldering tobacco and incense, surrounding a muscular spine of worn cedar and tar. Still rather backward, this will be showing well when most others from the vintage have had their day. Best from 2025 through 2045. 11,600 cases made.

"Their specialty is working with the Godello grape, which may well be Spain’s finest indigenous white grape ... Avancia is certainly the top producer of this intriguing and delicious dry white." - Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

Godello is the emblematic white grape of Spain, and the Valdeorras D.O. is emblematic of Godello. Jorge Ordoñez' Bodegas Avancia has been a standard bearer for Godello for years, and their Old Vine bottling is a consistent benchmark vintage after vintage. Sourced from head-trained, dry-farmed vines approaching 40 years of age on slate and quartz soils, resulting in a wine of serious depth and age-worthy concentration. The 2024 carries on this cuvée's sterling track record with a 94-point review from Vinous for its "pure, direct expression" of Godello. "Intense, with good freshness and weight," it's built to be a lasting rendition that will set the bar for Spanish whites in its price tier.

The 2024 Godello from Valdeorras spent six months on lees in French oak puncheons and demi-muids. It begins with acacia, linden blossom and pear, showing pure, direct expression. 2019 Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva (750ml)

B-21 Top Recommendation

Bodegas Muga's status as an all-time Rioja reference-point is reaffirmed with this sterling trio of releases at razor-sharp pricing, highlighted by the newly arrived 2021 Torre Muga.

"...one of the finest vintages for Torre Muga, along with 2016 and 2010." - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

The 2021 Rioja vintage is already garnering rave reviews in the press, and the JD98 Torre Muga reflects that praise, "a gorgeous wine from a gorgeous vintage that’s worth the price." Concentrated and robust yet also polished and refined, the 2021 expresses the character of its old-vine plots in Villalba de Rioja, Brinas, and Labastida. A host of impressive reviews from James Suckling, Vinous, and Wine Advocate further confirm the 2021 Torre Muga as a special achievement, worthy of the wine's loft reputation among collectors.

The Selección Especial Reserva is always a crowd and collectible favorite in the range and always priced well for a broad audience yet offering the kind of cellar-worthy appeal that serious collectors are looking for. The 2020 rendtion ramps up the collectible appeal thanks to a particular feature of the vintage itself – no Prado Enea was made in 2020, so all the fruit and juice that would normally comprise that flagship icon has instead gone into the Selección Especial. So, it's no surprise that the 2020 picks up right where the 2019 leaves off, led by Jeb Dunnuck's 95-point review that highlights its "medium to full-bodied richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, and silky tannins," which makes it "already hard to resist."

Finally, the 2021 Reserva Rioja continues to be one of the sharpest values in Spanish wine, "a textbook example of [Muga's] style in a very good year, with power, concentration and clout, elegance and freshness" perGutiérrez' 94-point review in Wine Advocate. It's a perfect candidate to stack by the case, since it will not only cruise for several years in the cellar, but it will quench your thirst for Muga excellence anytime over the next decade while the you wait for the big boys to reach their prime drinking windows. For fans of Spanish wine and of Rioja in particular, this is a spectacular opportunity to load up on proven performers that will put many smiles on your face for countless years to come, at market-best pricing.

The 2019 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is their more traditional Rioja, a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano, mostly from Rioja Alta (Sajazarra, Cellorigo and Fonzaleche) at 550 to 700 meters in altitude, but the Garnacha is from different plots in the zone of Tudelilla at a high altitude. They didn't produce Prado Enea in 2017 or 2018, so this is the follow-up of the superb 2016. The bunches were harvested into 200-kilogram boxes, destemmed, put through optical sorting and fermented in small oak casks with indigenous yeasts. The élevage in barrel was extended to 36 months. The nose is phenomenal, keeping the essence of Muga with a touch of Garnacha perfume; it's still young and undeveloped for its age, not yet tertiary. The wine is full-bodied but fine-boned and has 14.7% alcohol, a pH of 3.46 and 5.81 grams per liter acidity. Still young, the wine has power and elegance and very good aging potential. 119,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2023. The next vintages will be 2021 and 2022, and after that perhaps 2025, but certainly no 2023 or 2024 wine.

2023 Domaine du Bel Air Bourgueil Les Vingt Lieux Dits (750ml)
Cabernet Franc from Touraine, Loire, France

"... [a] hidden-gem domaine that is also one of the benchmarks for the Bourgueil appellation." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Loire Buyer

We had been searching for the wines of Pierre and Rodolphe Gauthier at Domaine du Bel-Air, since tasting the full range early last year, and finally the opportunity materialized in late autumn. Now, we not only have access, but we have direct access. The latest addition to our Loire direct-import stable is a benchmark of red wine excellence, all the way from their stunning, old-vine, single-vineyard cuvees to the entry-level 2023 Les Vingt Lieux Dits, "a classic, old-school Loire Cab Franc in all the best ways," as B-21 Buyer Andrew Kitz describes it.

As you might assume, this Cabernet Franc is a blend of up to twenty of the domaine's micro-parcels in Bourgueil, with average vine ages of 40 years. Long, cold-soak maceration, natural yeast fermentation, and aging for 12 months in used barrels all contributes to the wine's classic expression of youthful Cabernet Franc. The cooler vintage resulted in a wine with restrained yet concentrated fruit, assertive mineral backbone, and varietally pure character all the way through. The 2023 vintage very much favored the Gauthier brothers' style, which is to say this is a structurally solid Cabernet Franc with real substance and cellar potential, all for an incredible $25 price.

As good as the Vingt Lieux-Dits is, it's the single-vineyard cuvées that cement the domaine's reference-point reputation, and the Grand Mont is the crown jewel in the stable. Vinous' Rebecca Gibb describes the 2021 single-vineyard wines as "long-lived, elegant classics" and the 94-point Grand Mont in particular as "savory and serious ... precise, balanced, and full of sinew." Much like 2023, the 2021 vintage was cool growing season that favored the domaine style, and the Grand Mont is an impeccable example of the very best qualities of classic, top-end Loire Cabernet Franc.

I had been searching for access to Pierre and Rodolphe Gauthier’s wines since I tasted them last year, and now not only do we have them, but we have them directly from the domaine’s cellars. The 2023 Les Vingt Lieux Dits is the perfect introduction to this hidden-gem domaine that is also one of the benchmarks for the Bourgueil appellation. It’s classic, old-school Loire Cab Franc in all the best ways. The nose leads with compact, tart red cranberries, rhubarb, and dried cherries. A dusty soil note gives a great foundation, but there’s also a lingering, darker edge to the bouquet with anise, pepper, and leafy underbrush. The palate shows the 2023 vintage in its firm but balanced tannic structure. It’s tightly wound and grippy at the moment, so decant or open it ahead of time if you’re trying it today. The same compact fruit profile from the nose is here in very primary form, and the mineral spine is well-defined and delineated. A hint of dried violet takes the edge off the minerality, but it retains a bracing, structured finish that needs time to soften up (which it will do). The Gauthiers’ top-tier winemaking and viticulture are on full display even in their entry-level gem.

"...this is a stellar showing." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

What La Chablisiènne is to Burgundy, Produttori del Barbaresco is to Piedmont (and Italy overall) –the undisputed standard bearer for excellence in a wine co-operative. This legendary producer has been setting the tone for Barbaresco for decades, turning out vintage after vintage of reference-point, collectible expressions from their incredible stable of prized crus.

While we await the release of the inimitable, single-vineyard Riservas, the village Barbaresco is always an enticing glimpse of what the heavy hitters will offer. Sourced from many of those same coveted crus that comprise Produttori's range of collectible trophies, the appellation bottling boasts unimpeachable pedigree and class, and the 95-point 2022 rendition has the critical line to prove it. With stellar scores from nearly every critic of note, it's "round and succulent, with a fleshy profile and a solid base of tannins" according to Wine Spectator, while James Suckling calls it "delicious and balanced," the latter quality a rarity in this hot, dry Piedmont vintage. This rendition enjoys the added benefit of the addition of some juice originally destined for the Riservas, before the winery decided to scale down the volume of those wines in 2022. It all adds up to another feather in the cap of arguably the most important producer in Barbaresco and one of the region's most consistently smart buys.

95JD 94JS 94D 93V 93WS 93WE

In 2022, the estate will only be producing a small quantity of the single-vineyard Riservas, with the majority of fruit going into the 2022 Barbaresco. It pours a jeweled ruby red color and reveals a seductive yet very pure nose of cherry cordial, crushed roses, sweet herbs, and peppery spice. Medium-bodied, it has supple ripeness in the fruit yet wonderful clarity in its tannins and acidity, giving the wine excellent definition and balance. Roughly 133,333 bottles were produced. Drink 2026-2050.

95 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2026)

Bright and overtly fruity, this is full of intoxicating violets, cinnamon, blood oranges and black cherries, expressing mint and balsamic depth. Full-bodied with a soft, smooth attack, dusty yet velvety tannins and brilliant acidity. The chocolaty finish shows licorice and a mouth-coating texture. Delicious and balanced. Drink or hold.

94 points, Aldo Fiordelli, James Suckling (Nov 2025)

Violet, rose and dried herb scents over black cherry, raspberry and a touch of tar. Medium-bodied yet firm on the palate, its succulent red fruits are framed by fine tannins and fresh acidity. The clean and persistent finish shows floral, red-fruit and mineral nuances.

94 points, Lauren Mowery, Decanter (Apr 2026)

The 2022 Barbaresco is a pretty rich, heady wine. Dark cherry/plum fruit, cloves, licorice and mocha build as the 2022 shows off its considerable depth. This is one of the few 2022s that is quite resonant texturally. The aromatics could be more lifted and the tannins could use a bit more polish, but those qualities were next to impossible to come by in 2022. The inclusion of some juice from Riserva lots is a great help. All things considered, this is a stellar showing.

93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Oct 2025)

Packed with cherry and raspberry flavors, this red is round and succulent, with a fleshy profile and a solid base of tannins. Mineral and menthol accents add depth, and the finish is fresh and long. Best from 2028 through 2042. 25,000 cases made, 600 cases imported.

One of the greatest wines produced in Bordeaux this year is the 2019 Lafite Rothschild, an impeccably balanced classic of immense charm and grace. Wafting from the glass with arresting aromas of cassis, blackberries and cherries mingled with violets, cigar box and warm spices, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, its velvety attack segueing into a layered, concentrated mid-palate framed by exquisitely powdery tannins and ripe acids, and concluding with a long, perfumed finish. This rivals the 2010 and 2016 as the greatest Lafite of the decade, and of those three vintages, it's clearly the most sensual and demonstrative out of the gates. The blend contains fully 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and attained a modest 13.4% alcohol.

100 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

So much sweet tobacco, Spanish cedar, dried flowers, dark mushrooms and roses. Really aromatic. This is so polished and very powerful, yet ethereal and refined at the same time. The finish goes on for minutes. Tight and harmonious. You want to drink it! So balanced, yet it will age beautifully. It will be this good forever. 94% cabernet sauvignon, 5% merlot and 1% petit verdot. Better after 2031.

100 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Lafite-Rothschild is a mesmerizing wine that shows how compelling the vintage is on the Left Bank. Elegant, creamy and exquisitely layered, the 2019 Lafite conquers all the senses. There is tremendous density and power that belies the 12.8% alcohol, but then again, that can be the magic of Bordeaux. Classic Lafite red plum fruit, spice, cedar, licorice and rose petal linger on the striking, persistent finish.

98 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

A very energetic wine, with wild loganberry, mulberry and black currant fruit flavors that bristle with mouthwatering bay leaf, licorice root and savory notes. The finish is tight now, with charcoal shadings and a smoldering cast iron note, but there's additional black tea, incense and floral hints for contrast. Dense and driven, with more than enough elements to match its energy, meaning this can cruise in the cellar for a long time. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2026 through 2045.

2021 Renato Ratti Barolo Marcenasco (750ml)

"A stunning, precise wine focused on elegance..." - Aldo Fiordelli, JamesSuckling.com

The Renato Ratti estate is a bastion of traditional Barolo, working from prime sites in La Morra. After a period of experimentation with more modern, heavily extracted styles, the founder's son Pietro has taken the estate's style back to its roots, emphasizing finesse and precision of La Morra rather than overt power, and the results have been a renewed run of resounding critical success, especially in the benchmark 2021 vintage.

The founder himself is one of Barolo's most important innovators and visionaries, as the first to bottle a single-vineyard Barolo in 1965, and it was the Marcenasco cru that set the standard. Today, this exceptional site near the iconic Rocche dell' Annunziata is still a treasure of the estate, offering the quintessential La Morra profile in spades. The 97-point 2021 "is such a gorgeous edition of Marcenasco" according to Antonio Galloni, with additional solid praise from Wine Spectator, Jeb Dunnuck, and Kerin O'Keefe put the full imprimatur of excellence on this "fragrant and refined" classic that is built to age and is an easy cellar candidate at a razor-sharp, sub-$60 price.

Assertive aromas of graphite, violets, mint and chalky minerality. A stunning, precise wine focused on elegance, with citrus flavors, a full body and lavish, velvety tannins supported by freshness. Long, youthful and savory aftertaste. Try from 2026, but best after 2030.

97 points, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

The flagship Barolo of the Ratti estate, sourced from the crus of La Morra, embodies grace and sophistication. This wine unfolds like an origami flower, revealing layers of violets, savory herbs, grilled red plum, and drying cherries. The palate is captivating, with wild mint and herbal notes playing devil's advocate to tart red fruits. Supported by elegant tannins, it is both soft and sturdy, offering a harmonious balance. A triumph of refinement and structure.

96 points, Jeff Porter, Wine Enthusiast (Dec 2025)

Fragrant and refined, the stunning 2021 Marcenasco offers aromas of violet, red berry, dark exotic spice, hints of French oak and menthol. The savory palate features ripe raspberry, cranberry, star anise and vanilla before a salty close. Firm, velvety tannins give the finish grip while fresh acidity keeps it balanced and bright.

95 points, Kerin O'Keefe (Feb 2025)

Macerated cherry and raspberry fruit is shaded by orange peel, iron and menthol flavors in this juicy red. Needs time to absorb the chewy tannins, with a mix of savory and fruity elements on the finish. Shows fine balance and length.

2023 Luis Pato Vinhas Velhas Tinto (750ml)
Baga from Bairrada, Portugal

Portuguese wine is so much more than port or even the dry wines of Douro. The country is nearly covered by designated wine regions, and two of the most dynamic and promising for adventurous wine lovers are the centrally located Bairrada and the southern region of Alentejo.

Alentejo is still relatively unknown in wider wine circles, but the region's benchmark producers, such as Susana Esteban and Luis Louro's Monte Branco, are upping their game in a big way, producing some truly noteworthy wines that are among the more intriguing discoveries in the Old World, and they're now getting serious recognition in the U.S. press from the like of Wine Advocate.

Bairrada's relatively gently rolling terrain and coastal climate make it an ideal habitat for the native Baga varietal, the wines of which are notoriously structured and long-lived. The visionary pioneer that has come to define the Bairrada region, Luis Pato has been an avant garde genius pushing the envelope for nearly five decades now, and this latest set of releases shows that he's not content to rest on his laurels, even as his career can by considered an unqualified success many times over.

The Vinhas Velhas Tinto and Branco are two of the most age-worthy wines in their price tier, each with sterling press from Wine Advocate. Of the former, Luis Gutierrez writes, "It's really fine-boned and elegant, with superb balance, depth and complexity ... This is one to buy by the case and enjoy over the next decade... or two!" The WA93+ Branco is likewise a firm, mineral-driven specimen that is all about long-term development. Unique to almost any winery, you can also find perfect-provenance library gems like the 93-point 2009 Vinha Barrio or the 1990 Vinhas Velhas Branco. That's right, it's a current release direct from the winery's cellar. In a recent 95-point review,Wine Advocate's Luis Gutierrez noted, "This is a monumental white close to 35 years of age! And it should still continue for a few more years." Needless to say, you're in for an experience like no other with this one.

When exploring unfamiliar regions like these, it's often a daunting task to decipher which wines are worth the pursuit, so we've done the hard work and curated this list of proven winners to get you off on the right foot in your journey of discovery through Portugal's hidden treasures.

The 2023 Vinhas Velhas Tinto, the first wine in Portugal to be called old vines back in 1988, was produced with Baga grapes from two villages, São Lourenço and Óis do Bairro, from vines averaging 35 to 40 years of age on stony clay and limestone soils. Since 2020, the wine is more aromatic and with less extraction, as they lowered the temperature of the fermentation, which occurred with indigenous yeasts and a maceration time of 10 days at 22 degrees Celsius. It has a beautiful translucent and bright ruby color and an equally bright nose that is floral and perfumed, with an ethereal side. This has always been a favorite of mine, a wine that also has a good track record for developing in bottle. It's really fine-boned and elegant, with superb balance, depth and complexity but in a subtler way. The wine matured in well-seasoned French oak barrels for two years. This is one to buy by the case and enjoy over the next decade... or two! 18,110 bottles and 100 magnums produced. It was bottled in two lots in February and July 2025.

With over 200 hectares under vine, they are an emblematic reference-point of Douro terroir up and down their range, in both reds and whites. Of course, they also produce some excellent ports, but it's the dry wines that have Portugal fans reaching for them again and again, vintage after vintage. The 2022 Reserva Old Vines—or Reserva Vinhas Velhas, as it's labeled in Portugal—comes from a field blend of 30 to 40 different varieties from vines averaging 80 years of age. It's a serious, ripe and spicy Douro red with plenty of aromas of sweet spices and Mediterranean herbs, very open and aromatic. It feels riper this year and is still quite tannic and marked by the élevage in wood. I'd wait to pull the cork. 90,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in November 2024.

2023 Casanova di Neri Irrosso (750ml)
Sangiovese from Tuscany, Italy

"Vintage after vintage, Casanova di Neri continues to impress. The 2021s bring a seductive energy to the house’s complex, ripe style." - Eric Guido, Vinous

Long-time winemaker and owner Giancarlo Neri has fashioned his estate into one of Montalcino's most decorated (and sometimes controversial) names. As Giancarlo's illustrious career comes to an end and his son Giovanni takes the reins, there's been a wait-and-see approach the past few vintages as regards the estate's direction. Well, any questions can be put to rest in the epic 2021 vintage, as the flagship expressions are knockout, critically acclaimed stunners, capped by a perfect score for the iconic Tenuta Nuova. "It’s a gorgeous Tenuta Nuova that has everything working in harmony and will only improve with time in bottle." notes Jeb Dunnuck's Italy critic, Audrey Frick. Showing "a humbling level of complexity," the 2021 is built on an irresistible tension between its full aromatic and flavor profile and its ultra-precise, energetic structure, which Frick notes in detail in her 100-point review. Several 98-point reviews put the coda on this latest stunner, which marks a watershed moment in the evolution of this great estate.

As great as Tenuta Nuova is, you can expect the 2021 Brunello normale to take things to another level as well. With numerous 95-point reviews to its credit, the 2021 is a resounding triumph for this bottling that will stand with many other estates riservas when all is said and done. "The complexity here is off the charts and the energy is incredible," exclaims Eric Guido of Vinous. Fans of the estate will also find plenty to love in the 2023 Irrosso, a JS92 value gem that offers up plenty of di Neri pedigree at an easy case-buy price. Keen-eyed collectors will notice a handful of bottles of the highly limited 2020 Brunello Giovanni Neri, a double 98-point cellar "showstopper" from a 50-year-old parcel near Castelnuovo dell' Abate. "I do love the intensity and the energy of this wine," notes Wine Advocate's Monica Larner.

The entire range of new releases from Casanova di Neri shows an iconic estate that is far from resting on its laurels, instead pushing boundaries on a mission to maintain its place in the very elite echelon of Montalcino's most esteemed names.

Cherry and blackberry fruit define this linear, fluid red. There’s also a line of sinewy tannins that leaves its mark on the earthy, salty finish, which shows fine length. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot. Best from 2027 through 2035. 5,000 cases made, 2,500 cases imported.
