2019 San Roman (750ml)
Tempranillo from Toro, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

From the legendary winemaker of Vega Sicilia, the powerful 93 pt. 2019 San Roman offers bright, juicy fruit hinting of graphite and vanilla spice layered with fresh acidity and abundant fine tannins destined to evolve over time, “a stellar example of Toro” according to critic John Gilman and one of the region’s most outstanding values.

Beginning his career as winemaker for Vega Sicilia at the age of 24, the pioneering Mariano Garcia recognized the potential of the Toro region when he established Bodegas Pintia for Vega Sicilia in the mid-1980's, eventually partnering with his sons Alberto and Eduardo after leaving Vega Sicilia and founding his family’s own Toro project in Pedrosa del Rey in 1995. Spread across a diverse range of terroirs in San Roman de Hornija, Villaester and Morales de Toro, the estate’s 130 hectares of organically farmed vineyards consist mainly of the local clone of Tempranillo called Tinta de Toro, the ungrafted bush vines averaging over 40 years of age with some ranging up to 100 and planted in a mix of stones and sand over Toro’s dense iron-rich clay subsoil that imparts distinct minerality and naturally limits yields. Crafted from 100% Tempranillo, winemaker Eduardo Garcia fermented the grapes in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and then aged the muscular 2019 San Roman in a mix of about a third new 225 and 500 liter French and American oak barrels for 24 months, revealing “impressive concentration and a graceful and structured personality” that’s a signature of the Garcia style according to Vinous critic Josh Raynolds.

Described by the Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez as “one of the few wines from Toro that actually improves with time in bottle” along with Vega Sicilia's Pintia albeit at a fraction of the price, the impressive 93 pt. 2019 San Roman is meticulously crafted as a terroir-expressive, old vine Tempranillo expertly balancing power and finesse, ready for Toro fans and lovers of robust Spanish reds to enjoy its promising evolution at an outstanding value price.

This time I also tasted two vintages of their flagship and eponymous wine, starting with the 2019 San Román, from a warm and dry vintage that resulted in an early harvest that started the 6th of September in San Román de Hornija. It comes from a selection of over 40-year-old ungrafted and head-pruned vines on stony soils with clay and limestone in different villages of the appellation. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in new and used 225- and 500-liter French and American oak barrels for 24 months. The wine feels quite marked by the élevage in oak, and the 14.5% alcohol seems to have extracted quite a lot of aromas and tannins from the barrels. It's warm and heady, ripe and voluptuous, with abundant but fine tannins and mellow acidity. 112,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2020.

93 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Jan 2023)

This dark garnet-colored wine offers a nose of cherry preserves and anise. Juicy at first sip, it has flavors of pomegranate and cherry alongside notes of butterscotch, milk chocolate and orange zest. Tannins sneak onto the palate and linger into the enduring finish.

93 points, Mike DeSimone, Wine Enthusiast (May 2023)

This elegant red draws you into the glass with enticing aromas and flavors of ripe and macerated black cherry and black raspberry fruit, dark chocolate and Mediterranean herbs. Sculpted tannins and lively acidity trim and firm the flavor range. Long and finely knit, this echoes the herb, spice and mineral accents on the finish. Tinta de Toro. Drink now through 2030. 10,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.

2012 Lopez de Heredia Vina Reserva Bosconia (750ml)
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Renowned among collectors as one of Rioja’s most traditional and iconic producers, the richly layered 95 pt. 2012 Lopez de Heredia Vina Reserva Bosconia reveals fresh and aromatic spiced fruit with refined acidity and smooth, velvety tannins polished to perfection by extended aging, released ready to enjoy over the next decade or longer and an incredible value.

Established by Don Rafael Lopez in 1877, Lopez de Heredia is Rioja’s only remaining family-run Bodegas, adhering to the winemaking doctrine of its founder for over a century by crafting its wines from estate grown fruit and aging them in its original subterranean cellars near the Haro train station in La Rioja Alta. Home to a combination of old, well-worn barrels, ambient yeasts, mold, and cobwebs, the estate’s labyrinth of underground cellars are considered key to its signature style, resulting in wines that “would be impossible to replicate outside the walls of this Rioja standard-bearer” according to the Wine Spectator’s Gillian Sciaretta. Planted mostly to Tempranillo in clay and limestone soils, the 2012 Bosconia was sourced from the 12-hectare El Bosque vineyard situated in the foothills of the towering Sierra de Cantabria near the Ebro River at 465 meters of altitude, its low yielding vines averaging over 40 years of age and ranging to over 100 years. A blend of mostly Tempranillo with 15% Garnacha and small amounts of Graciano and Mazuelo, the multi-faceted 2012 Lopez de Heredia Vina Reserva Bosconia was co-fermented in 144-year-old oak vats before undergoing its lengthy aging regimen, spending five years in well-seasoned oak barrels crafted from hand-selected American oak timbers in the estate’s onsite cooperage, then bottled unfiltered and cellared for another five years, yielding rich, plump fruit and polished dusty tannins that will continue to evolve.

Calling it the pinnacle of traditional, classic wines, Neal Martin of Vinous sums up the Lopez de Heredia Riojas as “distinguished, individual, long-lived and above all, delicious,” the rich and refined 95 pt. 2012 Lopez de Heredia Vina Reserva Bosconia exquisitely crafted to deliver years of pleasurable drinking for Rioja lovers at an exceptional value.

95JS 93WA

Savory aromas of subtle earthy berries, oranges, iron and hints of walnut, tobacco and mushrooms. Fine tannins with high acidity on the palate with juicy, savory berries and a long, citrusy finish. A hint of tertiary caramel character at the end, making this very complex and complete. Drink now or in the next 10-15 years.

95 points, Zekun Shuai, James Suckling (Nov 2023)

The 2012 Viña Bosconia Reserva is perhaps a little too young (María José López de Heredia likes more polished wines, and for her this wine was too tough), with some tannins and the chalky texture from the limestone soils. This blend of Tempranillo with 15% Garnacho and 5% between Graciano and Mazuelo matured in used American oak barrels for five years. 80,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2019.

2020 Descendientes de J. Palacios Petalos (750ml)
Mencia from Bierzo, Castilla y Leon, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation

When it comes to the Bierzo wines from iconic 100 pt. winemaker Alvaro Palacios, the Wine Advocate’s Spanish expert Luis Gutierrez doesn’t mince any words: “Descendientes de J. Palacios is the most coherent, moving, thrilling and consistent wine project in Spain. Period.” Here’s a terrific opportunity to stock up on these magnificently crafted beauties from Descendientes de J. Palacios and confirm what their loyal fans already know – these delicious Spanish reds are some of Spain’s top values as well.

During the late 1980s, Alvaro Palacios travelled throughout Spain searching for a special terroir from which he could craft his native country’s greatest wine, deciding on Priorat as the place to launch his project and achieving international critical acclaim with the single vineyard L’Ermita. Never losing sight of his second choice, the Bierzo DO in northwest Spain, Alvaro formed a partnership with his nephew Ricardo Perez, also a Bordeaux-trained enologist with experience at Chateau Margaux, establishing Descendientes de J. Palacios in 1998 in Bierzo’s rugged hillsides in the foothills of the Sierra de Los Ancares, the combination of its poor schist soils and unique protected microclimate deemed the perfect terroir for growing the indigenous red grape Mencia and producing fragrant, mineral-driven wines often likened to Pinot Noir. Sourced from a patchwork of organically farmed parcels with vines over 60 years of age near the village of Corullon, the elegant 93 pt. 2020 Descendientes de J. Palacios Petalos is a blend of mainly Mencia co-planted and co-fermented with other local grapes from a diverse range of soils, altitudes and exposures, yielding exotic aromas of fresh, pure fruit hinting of graphite and spice and “always one of the best values not only of Bierzo but for the whole of Spain” according to the Wine Advocate’s Gutierrez.

Described by the Wine Enthusiast as “Spain’s most exciting wine region” but off the radar of many Spanish wine aficionados, Descendiente de J. Palacios might certainly garner a higher premium given the hefty price tag of the Alvaro Palacios L’Ermita yet remain delightfully affordable and one of Spain’s top buys, value priced to scoop up by the case and reach for without hesitation.

93WA 92JS 91WS

The regional red 2020 Pétalos comes from 90 hectares of vineyards, mainly from Corullón and Villafranca del Bierzo and the districts of Viariz, Hornija, Valtuille de Abajo and Otero. It mixes expositions, altitudes and soils and wants to paint a picture of Bierzo in the warm 2020 vintage. They reckon it's 92% Mencía with 5% other red grapes (Alicante Bouschet, Gran Negro, Pan y Carne and Negreda) and 3% whites (Valenciana, Jerez and Godello) with an average yield of 26 hectoliters per hectare. The grapes were picked from August 28th to September 24th and fermented partly destemmed in stainless steel and oak vats with indigenous yeasts for 43 days with a slow malolactic fermentation that lasted two months. The wine matured in barrel for around eight months (malolactic was fast, and the wines were put in barrel early) and was bottled unclarified, unfiltered and non-stabilized with cold. It has good ripeness with 14% alcohol (their upper limit) and moderate acidity at 4.6 grams (of tartaric acid). It's a little more fruit-driven, a vintage of sun, jovial and juicy, approachable and round with very fine, slightly powdery tannins. The fruit is darker than in the 2019. This is still young, and, as it happens with even the most approachable wines from the region, it should be even better in a couple of years. I tasted it again in mid-December, and the wine is showing better and better; time in bottle has done it some good, and the wine has settled and is getting more balanced. I don't feel the sun now; it's harmonious and more serious, juicy and tasty. A little better than anticipated. They had 1,050 barrels that produced 263,000 bottles and 1,500 magnums. It was bottled in May 2021.

93+ points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Issue # 261 - Jun 2022)

A rather dense expression here, with dark cherries and hints of lavender and oyster sauce to the slate, crushed blueberries, dark cherries and baked strawberries. Full-bodied and tannic, but silky and powdery. Long and tangy to the end. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but better in 2024.

92 points, James Suckling (Sep 2022)

Offering a minerally underpinning and overtones of bramble, herbs and spice, this medium-bodied red is fresh and focused, with juicy black raspberry and black cherry fruit, olive and iron flavors. Bright and well-balanced, with light, chalky tannins on the finish. Drink now through 2027. 30,000 cases made.

2020 Chateau Buena Vista Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California

Despite his abrupt death in a crocodile-infested river in the jungles of Nicaragua in 1869, the legacy of the infamously colorful Count Haraszthy prospers today at the historic Buena Vista Winery he founded in 1857. Recently acquired by the equally colorful bon vivant and vin extraordinaire Jean-Claude Boisset, Buena Vista has enjoyed significant investment and masterful vineyard management. Notable is this addition of Napa Valley Cabernet bottling to the Buena Vista line up beginning with the 2016 vintage. The Napa Cab fruit is sourced from sites in Oak Knoll, St. Helena and Atlas Peak, with 24 months in French oak of which 30% is new. The oversized, heavy bottle harkens to bottles of the 19th century – matching the classism of wine. The Count is still considered California's most acclaimed and flamboyant vinicultural pioneer, but some would contend Jean Claude Boisset might just be his match! The powerful, full bodied Chateau Buena Vista Cabernet Sauvignon shows Boisset's exceptional winemaking prowess, a well-balanced beauty offering bold fruit, fine tannins and lingering intensity..

As the first to introduce Caymus to the state of Florida back in 1981, our decades-long relationship with the Wagner Family of Wines presented a terrific opportunity to feature a selection of their outstanding offerings at rock bottom pricing, from the entry level Bonanza Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 5 to the iconic 2020 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon in limited one-liter bottles, along with Chard, Pinot and the easy-drinking Conundrum blends plus the lush Red Schooner Malbec Voyage 11 and the Red Schooner release called Transit. Here’s what’s in stock and ready to enjoy.

Boasting dark fruit hinting of vanilla and soft tannins, Bonanza Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 5 blends fruit from a variety of vineyard sites and vintages, its name referring to the “Bonanza” of unheralded vineyards throughout the state (and not the TV Western for those of us over a certain age…), crafted for everyday enjoyment. Inspired by Chuck Wagner’s father and his “no rules” approach to mixing wines, the Conundrum White is a refreshing proprietary blend of a variety of white grapes including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier that boasts lush tropical fruit and crisp acidity, while the Conundrum Red offers rich, dark fruit including Zinfandel, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon rounded out by pleasant, layered tannins. Sourced from vineyards in Santa Barbara to the south up to Solano County in the north, the Sea Sun Chardonnay balances bright, creamy fruit woven with harmonious toasted oak, while the Sea Sun Pinot Noir offers lush, ripe red fruit hinting of forest and spice with a velvet, palate-pleasing texture, its grapes coming from cool climate vineyards along the Pacific. Grown high in the Andes Mountains of Argentina, the ripe Malbec grapes for Red Schooner are shipped via chilled containers to Napa, where the Caymus team crafts a luscious, richly styled Malbec, referred to as Voyage 11 and coming from the 2021 Argentina vintage. Also shipped via chilled containers and crafted by the Caymus winemaking team, the grapes for Red Schooner Transit 2 are mostly Shiraz with a little Cabernet Sauvignon from Australia’s Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, with aging in French oak yielding ripe, dark fruit flavors hinting of spice and mint with smooth, firm tannins.

A comprehensive selection of top-quality wines crafted by the iconic Wagner Family of Wines, this is a not to be missed offer for Caymus fans to mix a case or two, stock up on some everyday wine or select a few favorites – with the legacy of the legendary Caymus behind each label at best on the market pricing, every choice is a win-win.

2018 Chateau Lynch-Bages (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Pauillac, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

Lynch-Bages is pure magic in 2019....A towering Pauillac, the 2019 Lynch Bages will make a great addition to any cellar…Don’t miss it.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Savvy Bordeaux collectors won’t need convincing – the thrilling 100pt. 2019 Chateau Lynch-Bages continues this estate’s epic run of exceptional quality, elegantly balancing concentrated lush dark fruit with grippy, mouth-coating tannins on “an extremely persistent, almost Lafite-like finish” according to Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson who declares it “a great Lynch-Bages of the modern era,” offered at an equally spectacular value and delivered ex-Chateau in original wooden cases of six.

Owned by the Cazes family for nearly a century, visitors to Chateau Lynch-Bages encounter an almost fairytale-like village complete with a Michelin-starred restaurant and luxury hotel, its stunning new contemporary winemaking facility designed by noted architects and sons of the masterful architect I.M. Pei, creator of the once controversial glass Louvre pyramid in Paris. Spanning 100 hectares planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller parcels of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the vineyards are located on a range of terroirs across Pauillac, from close to the Chateau on the gravelly Bages plateau to bordering St. Julien next to Chateau Pichon Lalande, the estate's vines for the Grand Vin averaging 30 years of age with some as old as 60 years. Under the direction of fourth generation Jean-Charles Cazes, the powerful 2019 Chateau Lynch-Bages was aged for 18 months in 75% new French oak, revealing intense, dark Cabernet aromatics described as “gorgeous from the start” by the Wine Spectator’s James Molesworth, embodying the hedonistic Lynch-Bages style with a core of fresh opulent fruit layered over rich, ripe tannins that according to Decanter’s Georgina Hindle give “no doubt that this is going to age slowly and for many decades.”

Embodying the terroir of Pauillac with magnificent aging potential, the long-lived, benchmark 100 pt. 2019 Chateau Lynch-Bages is “a true classic from this estate” according to the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley, among only a handful of perfectly rated 2019 Bordeaux standing shoulder to shoulder with the First Growths at a fraction of the price. As British wine critic Oz Clarke famously declared, "Lynch Bages is impressive at five, beautiful at ten, and irresistible at twenty" - secure yours while they last and prepare to enjoy the remarkable odyssey ahead.

98JD 97WS 97JS 96WA 96V 96WE

One of the finest vintages I've ever tasted from this address, the 2018 Château Lynch-Bages has everything you look for in a great wine: incredible aromatics, richness without weight, perfect balance, and a purity of fruit that's just about off the charts. Dense purple, it reveals a glorious perfume of blackcurrants and blackberry fruits, a deep, unctuous mouthfeel, building tannins, and a complex array of cedar pencil, tobacco, wood smoke, and chocolate. A true blockbuster in every sense, with masses of fruit and tannins as well as moderate acidity, it will probably merit a triple-digit score in a decade and is a 50+-year wine from this team.

98+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

Vibrant, with a violet and cassis lead-in that then expands to include steeped black cherry and plum fruit as well as extra savory, iron and licorice root notes. Nice latent grip too, with a mouthwatering tug of earth at the very end. The fruit is so vibrant, it's a tease now, but there's structure here for the long haul, so be patient. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2040.

97 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2021)

Aromas of blackberries, cloves, licorice, dried leaves, graphite and black olives. It’s full-bodied with firm, tight tannins. Structured and tannic with beautiful austerity and a long, mineral and layered finish. The tannins grow on the palate. Try from 2026.

97 points, James Suckling (Mar 2021)

Composed of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2018 Lynch-Bages was aged in 75% new barriques. Deep garnet-purple in color, it soars out of the glass with a magnificently expressive nose of blueberry compote, black cherry preserves and blackcurrant pastilles, plus suggestions of dark chocolate, licorice, tar and violets with a waft of hoisin. The medium to full-bodied palate is just as impactful as the nose, coating the mouth with juicy black berry and spicy layers, supported by firm, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long with a refreshing earthiness coming through at the end.

96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2021)

An utterly fabulous wine, the 2018 Lynch-Bages captures all of the richness and generosity that make the year so appealing, and yet doesn’t stray too far from its classic feel. Rose petal, lavender, spice, sweet red berry fruit and mint are all beautifully lifted in the glass. Racy and silky to the core, the 2018 is a real head-turner from the very first taste. All the elements fall into place effortlessly. Readers will have a very hard time keeping their hands off this jewel of a wine.

96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

The Lynch-Bages style is unmistakeable in this wine’s richness and the density of its structure and tannins. In addition it conveys a great sense of style, restrained power and opulence. Drink this wine from 2027.

2016 Clos du Marquis (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Saint-Julien, Bordeaux, France

Crafted by the team at Chateau Leoville Las Cases, these highly rated vintages from Clos du Marquis boast rich and concentrated ripe red and black fruits layered over flinty graphite with elegant, complex tannins, some ready to drink now with over a decade of pristine aging, others benefiting from a few years of patient cellaring and all boasting the pedigree of the renowned Second Growth Chateau at a fraction of the price.

Created in 1902 as a second label of Leoville Las Cases, the unclassified Clos du Marquis has been bottled as a completely separate offering since the 1980’s, highlighting the unique characteristics of its distinct terroir just inland from some of the Medoc’s greatest vineyards. Across the D2 Route des Chateaux just west of the famed L’Enclos vineyard of Leoville Las Cases, the enclosed Petit Clos vineyard of Clos du Marquis is situated on St. Julien’s northern border near Pauillac and surrounded by Second Growths Leoville Poyferre, Leoville Barton and Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. Located on the St. Julien plateau at around 20 meters above sea level, the 45-hectare vineyard is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with about a third Merlot and a small amount of Cab Franc in an array of soils ranging from quaternary gravel over gravel-sand to gravel-clay subsoil with veins of compact clay, its proximity to the Gironde responsible for the diversity of soils and a unique microclimate that encourages ripening and protects the vineyard from frost. Ranging from the 93 pt. 2005 Clos du Marquis that’s “in a very attractive place today” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous to the 95 pt. 2014 described as “tight and polished” by James Suckling to the more recent 93 pt. 2020 that Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson calls “a brilliant Marquis,” these top scoring Clos du Marquis vintages reflect its lengthy evolution and ability to age gracefully, whether ready for the glass now or requiring time in the cellar.

Upon tasting the 93 pt. 2005 Clos du Marquis ten years after its release, critic Neal Martin wrote, “Cannot afford Leoville Las-Cases? Then you know where to come,” these top scoring selections from Clos du Marquis reflecting the estate’s rich pedigree and terroir and over delivering value for Bordeaux lovers and collectors of powerful Left Bank blends.

From the considerable talents of the Léoville Las Cases team, the 2016 Clos du Marquis is made from 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc that was raised in 60% new French oak. This full-bodied, concentrated, incredibly elegant Saint Julien has the purity and balance that’s the hallmark of the vintage as well as loads of underlying structure and depth. Great notes of ripe black cherries, blackcurrants, spring flowers, and graphite all emerge from this beauty, which is going to be one for the ages. It will need 8-10 years of cellaring and keep for three decades.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2019)

This has a very suave, fresh and upbeat feel overall, with freshly baked berry pastry and ripe raspberry, boysenberry and red-plum aromas in abundance. The palate has a superb array of rich, fresh and deeply fruited tannins that roll smoothly into the elegant, focused and perfectly balanced finish. Try from 2023.

95 points, James Suckling (Feb 2019)

Blended of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Clos du Marquis has a very deep garnet-purple color and is a little broody to begin, giving way to notes of crushed blackcurrants and black cherries with touches of warm plums, pencil shavings, earth and new leather with a waft of yeast extract. Medium-bodied with a rock-solid frame of grainy tannins, it has bold fruit matched by freshness, finishing long and mineral laced.

94 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Issue # Interim - Nov 2018)

The 2016 Clos du Marquis was picked from September 30 to October 19. It has a generous, intense bouquet of blackberries, raspberry confit, cedar and light tobacco scents, representing a serious step up from the La Petite Marquise (as it should). The palate is rounded and quite sumptuous on the entry, and beautifully balanced, with a fine bead of acidity. This is a very fresh, tensile Clos du Marquis displaying superb precision on the finish and great persistence. Give it three to five years in bottle and then enjoy over the next 20 years, possibly more.

This has a plush edge of warm tar and ganache that slowly melds into the core of steeped plum and cassis flavors as they move through, picking up smoldering charcoal and graphite notes along the way. A very grounded wine that will age nicely. Best from 2023 through 2038. 12,500 cases made.

2016 Chateau Deyrem Valentin (750ml)
Merlot from Margaux, Bordeaux, France

“A silky, supple Margaux”

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Sourced from an outstanding vintage exhibiting “wonderful balance, intensity and clarity” according to critic James Suckling, the lush 93 pt. 2016 Deyrem Valentin offers aromatic, dark ripe fruit hinting of spice and graphite with a lingering, velvety finish, an enticing Left Bank blend built for years of aging that delivers Margaux’s signature elegance at a bargain price.

Surrounded by vineyards owned by five of the Margaux classed growths, Chateau Deyrem Valentin is located in the Soussans region in northern Margaux, owned by the Sorge family since 1928 and now under the direction of fourth-generation Christelle Sorge. Considered the best part of the commune of Soussans, the estate’s 13 hectares of organically farmed vineyards are situated in Marsac just north of Lascombes, Labegorce, and Margaux, planted almost evenly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with small amounts of Petit Verdot in well drained pebble and gravel soils over sand and clay, the vines averaging around 30 years with the oldest nearly 100 years of age. Employing strict selection in the vineyard as well as the cellar, winemaker Christelle Sorge fermented the parcels for the 2016 Deyrem Valentin in cement and aged it in about 30% new French oak barrels for 15 months before bottling, preserving Margaux’s signature enticing aromatics and yielding a deeply structured blend that’s “full of potential” according to the Wine Enthusiast’s Roger Voss, promising to evolve over the next decade or more.

An overachieving gem hidden among its higher profile neighbors, Vinous critic Neal Martin describes the luscious 93 pt. 2016 Deyrem Valentin as “simply a beautiful wine whose silky texture will seduce from 100 yards," an elegant Margaux over delivering value and conveyed in pristine provenance for Bordeaux lovers to enjoy without hesitation.

93WE 93JS 91V

Owned by the Sorge family and run by Christelle Sorge, this small estate is in Soussans, just to the north of Margaux. The rich, smoky character of the wine is full of potential. Fine tannins mingle with the black-currant fruit and dusty texture to give a wine that should be ready from 2024.

93 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2019)

Very attractive ripe cassis and dark-stone aromas with coal smoke, violets and a wealth of dark berries. The palate has a very plush, concentrated and polished feel and delivers a beautifully juicy finish. Try from 2022.

The 2016 Deyrem Valentin is soft, plush and inviting. “Rich and sumptuous to the core.”

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

An enticing, classically styled Napa Cab from one of the region’s most storied estates, the opulent 94 pt. 2021 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon offers rich, concentrated dark fruit hinting of mocha and spice with smooth, lush tannins, described as “a very easy wine to drink now and over the next decade or so” by Vinous critic Antonio Galloni that’s bargain priced well below neighboring Stags Leap producers to deliver outstanding value.

Located along the Silverado Trail just below Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars and Chimney Rock, founders John and Henrietta Goelet established Clos du Val in the area that would become known as the Stags Leap District of Napa Valley in 1972, purchasing their original 150 acres on the advice Bordeaux-born winemaker Bernard Portet, whose father had been technical director at First Growth Chateau Lafite. First gaining recognition at the famed Judgment of Paris in 1976 that established Napa Valley's reputation as a world-class wine region, the family-owned Clos du Val farms two estate vineyards in the Stags Leap and Yountville appellations planted mainly to Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller parcels of Bordeaux varietals, the estate now run by third generation Olav Goelet who has renewed the estate’s focus on producing Napa Cab. In addition to selling off their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards and revamping the winery, Goelet hired Carmel Greenberg, formerly an assistant winemaker at Dominus, as head winemaker, crafting 2021 as her first vintage from vine to bottle and “focusing on Cabernet bottlings made in a more restrained style” according to the Wine Spectator’s Bruce Sanderson while returning to the house style of “elegance and freshness.” Sourced mainly from the flagship Hirondelle Vineyard in Stags Leap in a low yielding vintage that produced smaller, concentrated berries, winemaker Greenberg blended 86% Cabernet Sauvignon with 7% Merlot, 5% Malbec, 1% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot in the alluring 2021 Clos du Val Napa Cab, aging it in 30% new French oak to yield layers of seductive, fragrant fruit beautifully balanced by precise acidity and plentiful, velvety tannins, summed up as “fabulous” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous and promising a decade or more of pleasurable drinking ahead.

Described by Jeb Dunnuck as “a terrific value in Napa Cabernet” that “delivers the goods,” the 94 pt. 2021 Clos du Val Cabernet Sauvignon marks the estate’s triumphant return to their roots as Cabernet Sauvignon experts in the Stags Leap District AVA, remaining for now an under the radar bargain for fans and collectors of long-lived, classic Napa Cabs to reap the rewards.

Seductive oak spices and a plush mouthfeel come with abundant red and black fruits in this full-bodied, appropriately tannic wine that needs time to reach its full potential. Pine and rosemary accents merge nicely with the blackberries and blueberries. Best from 2028–2038.

94 points, Jim Gordon, Wine Enthusiast (Dec 2023)

Spiced and creamy character with ripe dark berries and a chocolate and bark undertone. Lots of cassis and floral notes. Medium- to full-bodied, polished and sleek with chalky texture and hints of graphite at the end. Lingering finish. Better from 2026.

93 points, James Suckling (Dec 2023)

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is fabulous. Rich and sumptuous to the core, the 2021 will be a very easy wine to drink now and over the next decade or so. Succulent dark cherry/plum, spice, rose petal and mocha are all dialed up. Silky tannins wrap it all together in style.

Described as “one of Italy’s greatest white wine producers” by James Suckling, Schiopetto is the standard bearer against which all other producers in northeastern Italy are measured, these top-rated white wines offering fresh, pure fruit flavors with terroir-driven minerality, now value priced for lovers of Italian wine to mix a case to enjoy the full impressive range or choose a favorite or two to enjoy often.

Considered the pioneer of modern viticulture and winemaking in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Mario Schiopetto was first and foremost a champion of the region’s unique terroir, establishing his self-named winery in the Capriva del Friuli in the 1960s to craft vineyard-driven wines and the first to prove “Italy can make serious whites” according to the Wine Enthusiast’s Kerin O’Keefe. Continuing its founder’s legacy, Schiopetto produces its terroir-expressive wines from 30 hectares of estate vineyards planted on the ancient sea beds of marly clay and limestone known locally as “Ponca,” situated on hilly terrain in the subregion of Collio near the Slovenian border that’s protected from extreme cold by the mountains to the north and well-ventilated by breezes coming off of the Adriatic Sea. Crafted in the “Schiopetto style” employing cold fermentation and aging in stainless steel tanks, the 94 pt. 2021 Schiopetto Collio Pinot Bianco boasts impressive “density and depth” according to James Suckling with savory, polished fruit and a mouthwatering, mineral-nuanced finish. Among the highest rated Italian white wines from the vintage, the beautifully aromatic 95 pt. 2021 Schiopetto Collio Friulano is “one of the region’s gold standards for this iconic indigenous variety” according to Ian D’Agata of Vinous, revealing vibrant fresh fruit flavors hinting of crushed stone and briny acidity, while the 95 pt. 2021 Schiopetto Collio Pinot Grigio offers crisp bright fruit and “lots of minerality and depth” according to James Suckling. Boasting “upfront aromas of mixed stone fruit, wildflowers and sea salt” according to the Wine Enthusiast’s Jeff Porter, the 92 pt. 2021 Schiopetto Collio Malvasia offers creamy tropical fruit flavors and a “kiss of acidity,” while the 94 pt. 2021 Schiopetto Collio Sauvignon is “super pretty,” showing crisp herbal and citrus flavors paired with bright acidity that “pop on the palate with each sip.”

From the exceptional northern Italian producer “who put Friuli on the map” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, these top-scoring Schiopetto white wines are meticulously crafted with elegance and precision to express the unique characteristics of each varietal while allowing the estate’s signature minerality to shine through, honoring their founder’s legacy and now value priced for Italian wine lovers to experience and savor often over the next several years.

Sliced lemon, lime, pear and green melon. Full-bodied and very varietal, with hints of grass, mineral and tropical fruit. Yet, the palate is structured, with phenolic tension that runs the length of the wine. So long and tense. Goes on and on. Drink now.

Described as “the next superstar producer in Chateauneuf du Pape” by Jeb Dunnuck, these top scoring selections from under the radar estate Bosquet du Papes showcase their beautiful traditionally styled range of cellar worthy CDP blends, driven by old vine Grenache grown in the region’s top terroirs and affordably priced for Rhone lovers to enjoy often over the next decade.

Located on the Route d'Orange just past the picturesque hilltop village of Chateauneuf du Pape, Bosquet des Papes’ steady rise in quality over the last two decades has been driven by fifth generation winemaker Nicolas Boiron, elevating his family’s Grenache-dominated blends “into the upper echelon of the appellation” according to Vinous critic Josh Raynolds. Sourced from vines averaging an astounding 90 to 100 years of age, the limited production 96 pt. 2019 CDP Chante Le Merle Vielles Vignes is a powerful blend of 85% Grenache and 15% Mourvedre, boasting “well-integrated tannins and great aromatic complexity” according to Josh Raynolds of Vinous, its richly concentrated, layered fruit brimming with Southern Rhone character.

96WA 95JD 95WS

The blockbuster 2019 Chateauneuf du Pape Chante le Merle Vieilles Vignes is a big, hulking wine, loaded with minty-stemmy notes and dark, plummy fruit. Allspice and salted licorice provide additional nuance, making it more than just a powerhouse, but it is a full-bodied, tannic wine that will need time in the cellar.

96 points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (May 2022)

The old vine cuvée, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes is 85% Grenache and 15% Mourvèdre brought up mostly in foudre, with a small portion in demi-muids. Its deep ruby hue is followed by a stunning array of ripe black raspberry and cherry fruits as well as ground pepper, Provençal garrigue, sandalwood, and exotic spices. Beautiful on the palate as well, it's medium to full-bodied and has a layered, rich, concentrated mouthfeel, building, firm tannins, and outstanding length. It will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and shine for two decades.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2021)

Steeped plum and cherry compote notes are the main themes, though chestnut, sweet bay leaf, singed alder and tobacco flavors all make their presence known. Tar and licorice root accents underline the finish, giving this a toothy, old-school edge. A rock-solid, throwback-style Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2024 through 2038. 2,000 cases made, 400 cases imported.

A firm and silky red with cherry, dried flower and orange peel aromas and flavors. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and a fresh and focused finish. Needs a little time to soften but I already enjoy the energy here. Drink or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (Aug 2023)

The 2021 Chianti Classico Berardenga is boisterous and expressive right out of the glass. Dark fruit, earthiness, leather, spice and tobacco convey tons of Castelnuovo Berardenga character. The 2021 keeps getting better in the glass. It's a super-classic example of the house style and a wine readers should consider buying by the case. The Berardenga bottling can be a bit wild, but in 2021 has an added touch of sophistication that is undeniable.

92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Aug 2023)

The Fèlsina 2021 Chianti Classico Berardenga has a spicy or crunchy side that I often find with Sangiovese. There is a lot of fruit brightness here with cassis, red cherry, mineral, dried tobacco and grilled rosemary. This is an easy-drinking Tuscan red with the natural acidity and brightness to pair with a classic lasagna or eggplant parmigiana.

91 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (May 2023)

This has a saline undercurrent to the cherry, cinnamon, rose hip, earth and Tuscan scrub flavors, all backed by a solid base of tannins and vibrant acidity. Long, energetic finish. Best from 2024 through 2030. 22,500 cases made, 8,000 cases imported.

91 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Oct 2023)

In the southeastern confines of the denomination, the Fèlsina estate has been an unwavering proponent of 100% Sangiovese. Even the annata captures the wildness of this grape combined with the Mediterranean character of this warm and luminous corner of Chianti Classico. The 2021 starts with smoky nuances, earth and subtle oak, then progresses to fragrant mint and thyme. It is concentrated and ripe, yet balanced by freshness and agility. An underlying firmness releases gradually to reveal a savoury finish of sundried tomato.

2017 Chateau Pontet-Canet (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Pauillac, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Alfred Tesseron and his team, led by estate manager Jean-Michel Comme, have completely transformed both the vineyards and identity of Château Pontet-Canet by embracing organic and biodynamic practices. Recognizing the extraordinary terroir of Pontet Canet – the heart lies in a plateau outcropping of Garonne Gunz gravel which overlays limestone bedrock, these poor soils allow drainage that’s optimal for Cabernet. The center of this plateau is planted to Cabernet Franc which is surrounded by Cabernet Sauvignon. Merlot is planted on the gravelly clay soils that meet the perimeter of the gravel plateau. Tesseron's campaign for biodynamic agriculture began in 2004 and tasting results confirmed this to be the estate's future; the Medoc's first Classified Growth dedicated to biodynamics. Pontet Canet received its organic certification in 2010 and Demeter in 2014 – the world's largest certification organization for biodynamic agriculture used in 50 countries. Three Breton draft horses were added to the estate's stable replacing tractors in 2008, now at total of seven horses tend the vineyards. With great terroir and extraordinary dedication to excellence, Tesseron has elevated Pontet Canet beyond its historic performance; now among the top estates in Bordeaux.

96WA 96WE 96JS 95V 94WS

Composed of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Pontet-Canet gives up beautifully fragrant notes of rosehip tea, lilacs, cinnamon stick, cloves, dried leaves and underbrush with a core of kirsch, raspberry coulis, warm plums and red and black currants plus a waft of pencil shavings. Medium-bodied, the palate is refreshing, minerally and wonderfully elegant with a well-played texture of approachable, plush tannins and a long, fragrant finish. Beautiful. Aging took place in 50% new and 15% in second fill barrels and the remaining 35% in amphorae for 16 months, much of the material for which came from the soil at Pontet-Canet!

96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2020)

The perfume intensity of this wine is remarkable. Firm yet velvety at the same time, the tannins are the prelude to the pure, opulent blackberry fruits and balanced acidity. The lines of the wine are clear and direct, a true promise for aging. Drink from 2024.

96 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Mar 2020)

This has ethereal transparency to it with a fresh, red-berry and cherry nose. Terra-cotta and dried-flower notes. Plums, too. Quite complex. The palate has a very detailed tannin texture with attractive cassis and blueberries that hold very long, fresh and pure. Fruity and fresh. Try from 2023.

96 points, James Suckling (Dec 2020)

A gorgeous, alluring Pauillac, the 2017 Pontet-Canet is racy and exceptionally polished, with floral top notes that bring out the natural brightness of the red-toned fruit. Super-silky tannins add to the wine's immediacy and sheer allure. The 2017 was the first wine made with the new sorting table. About half the fruit was destemmed by hand. As always, visiting Pontet-Canet is like stepping back into another time, a time in which wines were made much more manually than they are today. Here that means manual punch downs and pump overs, with no electricity. Harvest ran from September 18 through October 4. The blend is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Aging was done 50% in new oak, 35% in amphora and 15% in one year-old oak. Tasted three times.

95 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2020)

Very tight, with notes of wet stone, plum pit and chalky minerality leading the way, backed by an ample core of steeped currant, blackberry and black cherry fruit waiting to unfurl. The finish smolders with cast iron details. Should round into form with cellaring. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2024 through 2040.

2019 Klein Constantia Vin de Constance Natural Sweet Wine (500ml)
Muscat from Constantia, South Africa
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Produced from the historic South African estate of Klein Constantia, no description seems to come close to accurately portraying the ethereal, otherworldly experience of tasting the one-of-a-kind Vin de Constance. With Decanter declaring "Vin de Constance, one of the world’s most legendary sweet wines, has entered a new chapter of its centuries old existence with the 2012 vintage," this limited offering is a rare opportunity to secure an allocation of multiple vintages over the last decade of the world's leading late harvest Muscat wine beginning with the extraordinary 2012, available in the estate's distinctive 500ml and 1.5L bottles at an equally exceptional price.

Founded in 1684 in the valley north of False Bay and just south of Cape Town, Klein Constantia was first planted by Simon Van der Stel (founder of Stellenbosch), who recognized that the region's decomposed granite soils and cooling maritime breezes were ideal for growing grapes. By the mid-1700s, the Vin de Constance had attracted a fan base that would come to include George Washington, Charles Dickens and Queen Victoria, with author Jane Austen immortalizing its "healing powers" and the exiled Napoleon Bonaparte requesting only a single glass of Vin de Constance on his deathbed. But economic upheavals paired with the decimation of the vineyards by phylloxera in the late 1800s sent Constantia into decline for more than a century, until a portion of the historic original estate was revived in 1986. With the estate's change in ownership in 2010, a modern renaissance has begun, and as Vinous critic Neal Martin declared, Klein Constantia "is undergoing a quiet revolution." Now led by managing director Hans Astrom, formerly at Hess Collection and winemaker Matt Day, whose experience includes Elderton in Barossa Valley, Dancing Hares in Napa, and St. Emilon's Chateau Belefont Belcier, the Vin de Constance is sourced from the estate's 16 hectares of Muscat de Frontignan grapes. Produced without botrytis, Day achieves optimal ripeness by requiring up to 30 passes through the vineyard over the course of the two-month harvest, with the first batches picked to preserve their bright acidity and fermented to dryness for a base wine, while the last grapes are harvested by a special team as individual raisins that have dehydrated on the vine, concentrating sugars. Meticulously blended over time to achieve an integrated balance of sugar, alcohol and acidity, the Vin de Constance is vinified in Klein Constantia's new custom-built cellar with Day limiting the time spent in barrel to three years to enhance freshness, utilizing a mix of new and used French oak, acacia barrels and large format foudres.

Showing amazing consistency yet constantly evolving vintage after vintage, the Vin de Constance is an intense, energetic wine boasting a long and immensely complex finish, balancing inseparable multiple layers of elegant, honeyed sweetness with harmonious acidity. Standing among the greatest sweet wines of the world and continuing to evolve over the next decades, this is an extraordinary opportunity to secure the seductive Vin de Constance at an exceptional price, with multiple vintages offered in a distinctively shaped bottle resembling the original hand-blown design, one that is as unique as the wine itself.

97WA 97JS

The 2019 Vin de Constance is matured for 18 months in 500-liter Hungarian and French oak barrels, 50% new, followed by another 18 months in oak foudres. The growing season saw more sunlight hours than previous vintages (2,998 compared to 2,588 in 2018 for example). It has an understated nose, almost Sauternes-like even if it does not contain an ounce of botrytis. Subtle nutty aromas percolate through the wild honey and quince scents, wax resin and lanolin. The palate is medium-bodied and very pure. Disarmingly fine acidity, it is slightly Germanic towards the finish. with a hint of lemongrass lingering on the aftertaste. This is a superb Vin de Constance under the tenure of Matt Day that is a step closer to what you might confusingly call a non-sweet dessert wine.

97 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Jul 2022)

Bright, medium to deep gold hue, showing focused and pure aromas of honeysuckle, fresh vanilla, lemon tart, dried mango, ginger and a hint of saffron. Certainly quite sweet, but not unctuous, with the natural, effortless acidity managing to balance the lushness. Intense, yet scented and naturally expressive. Persistent finish. You crave for a second glass if you drink it now, but you can also hold it for a decade in your cellar.

2022 Enrico Serafino Grifo del Quartaro (750ml)
Cortese from Gavi, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

From “a haven for characteristically crisp, dry and minerally whites” according to Decanter’s Alessandra Piubello, the fresh and vibrant 92 pt. 2022 Enrico Serafino Grifo del Quartaro Gavi offers zesty citrus and fragrant stone fruit flavors with grassy, nutty undertones and a refreshing saline-tinged finish calling for another sip, a terrific value for Gavi fans and anyone seeking an outstanding Italian white to enjoy often.

With a history dating back to 1878 in Canale d’Alba in southeastern Piedmont, the Enrico Serafino winery went through a period of corporate ownership in the later 1900’s before being purchased in 2003 by the Krause Gentile family, American entrepreneurs who famously (or perhaps infamously depending on who you ask) purchased the renowned Barolo producer Vietti in 2016. Named for the centuries’ old griffin-embossed coins used by Genovese landowners in the region, the 2022 Grifo del Quartaro Gavi is sourced from a six-hectare vineyard in Monterotondo di Gavi, its location north of Genoa near the Ligurian border boasting ideal conditions for producing fresh white wines from the native Cortese grape. Planted in a mix of marl, clay and chalk soils, the vines are situated on sloping hills with winds off the Ligurian sea flowing up to the snow-capped Apennines imparting minerality and distinctive salinity to the wines. Fermented and aged exclusively in stainless steel tanks, Piedmont native and winemaker Paolo Giacosa aged the 2022 Enrico Serafino Grifo del Quartaro Gavi for 3-8 months with regular stirring on the lees and two months longer in bottle, expertly balancing rich, mouth filling fruit and lively minerality “with fresh acidity and a crisp and expressive finish” according to James Suckling.

Among the top rated Gavi wines in the vintage, the mouthwatering 92 pt. 2022 Enrico Serafino Grifo Del Quartaro Gavi is refreshingly delicious whether sipped along or paired in the traditional Ligurian style with seafood dishes, an easy drinking Italian white skillfully crafted and affordably priced to fill the cooler and enjoy often.

The Enrico Serafino 2022 Gavi del Comune di Gavi Grifo del Quartaro is chiseled and tonic with citrus, white grapefruit, unripe peach and crushed oyster shell. 2015 Torre de Ona Martelo Reserva (750ml)
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

A vineyard-driven Rioja crafted by the team of La Rioja Alta, the elegant 94 pt. 2015 Torre de Ona Martelo Reserva layers fragrant juicy fruit with lush, chalky tannins on a long, silky finish, expressing its distinctive Rioja Alavesa terroir in the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria and delivering outstanding value.

Seeking to produce a more modern Rioja in contrast with its traditionally styled reds, La Rioja Alta purchased Torre de Ona in 1995 to craft a terroir-driven Rioja from estate grown fruit, its stately manor house in Paganos-La Guardia surrounded by vines reminiscent of a Bordeaux chateau. Spread across 50 hectares surrounding the manor, the Tempranillo vines in the south facing Torre de Ona vineyard are planted in shallow clay and limestone-rich soils at over 575 meters above sea level and protected from the humid north winds by the imposing mountains, the milder temperatures allowing for complete ripening of the grapes. Divided into 50 individual parcels by soil type, the hand harvested grapes undergo strict selection to determine if the quality is suitable to produce the Reserva and each parcel is then vinified separately in stainless steel tanks. Blending in a small amount of other varietals, La Rioja Alta winemaker Julio Saez aged the enticing 2015 Torre de Ona Martelo Reserva in a mix of new American oak and used French oak barrels and racked the wine in a traditional method by candlelight to remove sediment, yielding pure, elegant red fruit with soft silky tannins on a long spicy finish.

Produced in a manner described by James Suckling as “a mix of Riojan craftsmanship and Burgundy style,” the beautifully balanced 94 pt. 2015 Torre de Ona Reserva expertly combines exceptional Tempranillo reflecting its vineyard origins with extended oak aging, a delicious Rioja narrowing the gap between the classic and modern styles that’s ready for Rioja fans to enjoy often at a terrific price.

94WA 93V 92WS 92JS

I found a very complete 2015 Finca Martelo that followed the style and the quality path of the previous vintages. The release of this wine was an important milestone for Torre de Oña, where they look for the typicity of Rioja Alavesa through a blend of old-vine Tempranillo with 6% other varieties (Mazuelo, Garnacha and even white Viura). 2015 was a healthy harvest, and the wine shows a nice combination of power and elegance. It's clean and modern but with a traditional twist, some developed aromas and very fine chalky tannins from the limestone-rich soils. 80,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2019.

94 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Issue # 251 - Oct 2020)

Glistening violet. Potent, mineral- and smoke-accented dark berry, cherry cola and floral scents show excellent clarity and spicy lift. Lively and seamless in texture, offering sweet black raspberry, cherry preserve and boysenberry flavors and hints of spicecake and candied rose. Closes on an appealingly sweet note, with sneaky, slow-mounting tannins and strong, smoky persistence.

Supple, polished and harmonious, this red shows cherry, tea, vanilla, leafy and spicy notes, with modest and balanced tannins and acidity. A bit reserved, but has focus and length. Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Viura. Drink now through 2027. 550 cases imported.

The density and depth is very impressive for a pinot bianco, with fresh white flowers, dried apples, lemons and pears. It’s full-bodied, but feels fresh and vivid on the palate. Stony and minerally undertones at the end. Drink or hold.

Frank Family Vineyards has earned a loyal following for their consistently outstanding wines priced well below their fellow Napa competitors and these Napa Valley selections are no exception, a spectrum of ready to enjoy wines from outstanding California vintages, ranging from their elegant Carneros Chardonnay to a top scoring Napa Cab described as “superb” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous and all delivering exceptional value.

Located near a crossroad connecting Highway 128 to the Silverado Trail, Frank Family Vineyards occupies a historic stone building built in 1884 that housed the original Larkmead Winery, the landmark property acquired by former Disney executive Rich Frank and legendary Napa winemaker Koerner Rombauer in the 1990’s. After purchasing a home on the hills overlooking Rutherford with a small vineyard, Rich Frank partnered with his friend Rombauer to produce wine at the facility, but after a catastrophic fire spared only the historic building in 2000, Rich became the sole owner and rebuilt the damaged portion of the winery, renaming it Frank Family Vineyards. Sourced from 380 acres of estate vineyards in Carneros, Rutherford, and Capell Valley, long time winemaker and GM Todd Graff employs the same barrel aging across the Napa Collection, utilizing a mix of one-third new French oak barrels with one-third in once-used barrels and one-third in twice-used barrels. Sourced from cooler climate vineyards in Carneros, the luscious 2022 Frank Family Vineyard Chardonnay balances rich fragrant fruit and a creamy texture from lees stirring with bright acidity, while the richly aromatic 2022 Frank Family Pinot Noir reveals fresh, juicy fruit hinting of earthy spice with vibrant acidity on a satiny finish. The rich 2021 Frank Family Vineyard Zinfandel offers ripe dark bramble fruit layered with pepper and spice from estate vineyards in Capell Valley and Rutherford while the smooth and satisfying 93 pt. 2021 Frank Family Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon boasts “moderate to full tannins around a mix of bright red cherries, black cherries, mint and cassis” according to James Suckling with well-integrated tannins that promise a decade of longevity.

Owned by the Kressmann family, this estate has released an ageworthy wine. Rich tannins are balanced by dark, juicy blackberry fruits and dense, concentrated tannins. The wine needs to age, so drink from 2026.

95 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2021)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 Latour Martillac comes barreling out of the glass with bold notes of baked blackberries, plum preserves and redcurrant jelly, plus suggestions of garrigue, pencil shavings and menthol with a waft of tree bark. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a sturdy frame of firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness to support the generous fruit, finishing long and earthy.

2021 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 (750ml)
Shiraz from South Australia, Australia
B-21 Top Recommendation

Crafted from multi-regional and multi-vineyard fruit in the same rich and robust style as the iconic Grange, Penfold’s lush 93 pt. 2021 Shiraz Bin 28 checks all the boxes for classic Australian Shiraz, offering bold, ripe dark fruit hinting of cocoa and spice with velvety, plush tannins and exhibiting Penfold’s “remarkable mix of character, consistency and value” according to the Wine Spectator’s Harvey Steiman, a reliable and unbeatable value for fans of Aussie Shiraz.

Established in 1844 by pioneering founders Christopher and Mary Penfold, Penfolds has been a leader in the Australian wine industry for nearly two centuries, among the first to cultivate vineyards in Adelaide with vine cuttings from France and England and naming its flagship cuvee in the 1950’s after the founder’s original stone cottage in Magill called the Grange. Sourcing it from the historic Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard, renowned Penfolds winemaker Max Schubert crafted the first vintage of Bin 28 in 1959 while perfecting his Grange experiment in secret, establishing the Penfolds tradition of naming wines for their storage location in the winery’s cellars by referencing a number known as the Batch Identification Number or “Bin” for short. Sourced from four diverse regions with nearly half the fruit coming from the Barossa Valley, winemaker Matt Woo aged the robust 2021 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 for 12 months in 7% new American oak casks, yielding a “spicy, full throttle” Shiraz according to the Wine Advocate’s Erin Larkin with layers of luscious dark fruit and well-integrated tannins promising longevity.

Described by James Suckling as a “full-weighted Australian Shiraz” with “plenty to like,” the enticing 93 pt. 2021 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 showcases this iconic producer's reputation for consistency vintage over vintage, promising Aussie Shiraz fans a deliciously decadent pour at a bargain price and ready to enjoy over the next decade.

93WE 93W&S 92WA 92JS 92AWC 91V

This inky-hued Shiraz is dense, ripe and powerful with quite a bit of oak on display. Chocolate and dusting polish perch atop the concentrated dark fruit and pepper spice on the nose. The palate is rich and luscious, framed in muscular tannins that support, rather than overpower. Classic Penfolds, this drinks well now with protein but could cellar for several more years.

93 points, Christina Pickard, Wine Enthusiast (Mar 2024)

Fresh blueberry depths invest this wine’s tannins with black velvet riches. You can sense the integration of Penfolds’ winemaking, finishing the fermentation in oak. Rosemary and thyme. Luscious and delicious. Ripe and open. It’s not exciting, perhaps, just comforting and beautiful. From an epic vintage, this will last for years. And yet, even now, it’s supple and easy to love.

93 points, Joshua Greene, Wine & Spirits (Dec 2023)

The 2021 Bin 28 Shiraz hails from five regions: McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and Clare Valley. The wine matured for 12 months in American oak (7% new), and this really amplifies the sweet fruit characters in the mouth. It's already nicely integrated aromatically, despite being poured and opened in the same instance (i.e., no preparation prior to tasting), and is redolent with red and purple berry fruit. Spicy, full throttle and loads of tannin in the mouth. Nicely chewy. The first vintage of this wine was in 1959. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

92 points, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate (Jul 2023)

The type of full-weighted Australian shiraz that many expect. While it could be argued that that the style is a bit fusty, what cannot be denied is the moreish feel. Iodine, clove and boysenberry billow toward a nourishing and forceful finish and the reality is that this cuvee, as with so many in the stable, is reliable and delicious. Sure, the oak is a bit fuzzy, but there is plenty to like. Drink or hold.

92 points, Ned Goodwin, James Suckling (Jul 2023)

A McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and Clare Valley sourced shiraz matured in American oak (7% new) for 12 months. Deep crimson in the glass, the wine initially comes across a little shy, showing itself in the traditional Penfolds 'house style' after some time in the glass. Plentiful black and plummy fruit depth with hints of spice, roasting meats, soy sauce, charcuterie, Old Jamaica chocolate, licorice and earth. Tenses somewhat on the medium-length finish.

92 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion (Jul 2023)

The 2021 Shiraz Bin 28 is a little shy before building and offering broad blackberry, blackcurrant, blackberry and chocolate aromas with sweet oak in support. Supple and fleshy fruited in style with well-weighted tannins, it’s a nicely pitched South Australian Shiraz with good upfront generosity, which it will continue to hold over the short to medium term.

2021 Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso 'a Rina (750ml)
From Etna, Sicily, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Described as “one of the volcano’s most talented producers” by the Wine Advocate’s Monic Larner, these selections from winemaker Giuseppe Russo of Girolamo Russo features some of Sicily’s top-rated Mount Etna wines, a terrific opportunity to explore the outstanding range of wines crafted from Sicily’s volcanic terroir by a masterful winemaker that “never disappoints” at best on the market pricing.

While the steep, terraced vineyards of Mount Etna have attracted winemakers and consultants from all over the world, winemaker Giuseppe Russo is Sicilian born and bred, drawn back to his family’s roots in Passopisciaro after the death of his father Girolamo who had been farming vineyards on the slopes of Mt. Etna for decades but never bottling his own wine. Establishing the winery that bears his father’s name in 2005, Giuseppe’s organically farmed vineyards span 15 hectares on Etna’s windy northern slope, surrounded by olive and hazelnut trees at altitudes from 650 to 780 meters above sea level and planted with a range of indigenous grapes including the white Carricante and red Nerello Mascalese in Etna’s wide-ranging mineral-rich volcanic soils. Arranged in rows along narrow terraces held in place by stone walls, the steep terrain requires all the vineyard work including harvesting be done by hand, the ungrafted, gnarly bush vines called albarelli or “little trees” ranging from 80 to 100 years of age and divided into individual plots or single vineyards known locally as contradas based on each parcel’s unique soil composition. Sourced from 80 year old Nerello Mascalese and “an incredible value” rose according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, the elegant 92 pt. 2022 Girolamo Russo Etna Rosato blends fresh, ripe red berry and stone fruit flavors with nuances of mineral and spice and crisp acidity, while the enticing lemony-colored 93 pt. 2022 Etna Bianco Nerina is “a total pleasure to take in” according to Eric Guido of Vinous, boasting fragrant tropical fruit with zesty lemon on a mineral finish. A blend of Nerello Mascalese and Cappucio from various sites, Giuseppe co-fermented the grapes for the 94 pt. 2021 Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso 'a Rina in stainless steel and open tanks before aging it for 12 months in large Slavonian oak casks and concrete tanks and six months longer in bottle, yielding aromatic, bright red fruit hinting of nutty spice with smooth, silky tannins. Described as “remarkably pretty” by Eric Guido of Vinous, the 96 pt. 2021 Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso San Lorenzo “is one of the most impressive interpretations of Etna” according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner revealing rich, vibrant fruit and an elegant silky texture, while the 96 pt. 2021 Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso Calderara Sottana Etna Rosso from 100% Nerello Mascalese is “one of the finest wines made on Etna in recent years,” revealing concentrated, ripe berry fruit with refined, chalky tannins. Sourced from the estate’s oldest high elevation vines, the refined 96 pt. 2021 Girolamo Russo Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo is described as “beautifully ethereal and almost weightless in character” by critic Larner, offering darker, fleshy fruit and streamlined tannins that promise longevity.

Recently declaring “Sicily is going through a Golden Age,” Vinous critic Eric Guido notes “the best part is that, overall, the wines are still an amazing value,” these highly rated selections from Girolamo Russo artfully expressing Mt. Etna’s uniquely volcanic terroir and unbeatably priced to explore and savor the wines of Sicily’s most exciting region.

94JS 93WA 92D

Plenty of citrus, orange peel, honey and beeswax with some pumice and volcanic soil character. Medium body, with firm and integrated tannins that are energetic and integrated. Very pretty now but even better in three or four years. Drink or hold.

94 points, James Suckling (Sep 2023)

This is the entry-level red from Girolamo Russo. Made with Nerello Mascalese and about 10% Nerello Cappuccio blended from various vineyard sites, the 2021 Etna Rosso 'a Rina offers terrific value with wild berry, blue flower and crushed stone over an elegant mouthfeel. The emphasis is on freshness and balance.

93 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jun 2023)

This is what Giuseppe describes as his ‘Etna classico’ yet this undersells the complexity of the winemaking and the final result. Nerellos Mascalese and Cappuccio from San Lorenzo, Feudo, Calderara Sottana and Feudo di Mezzo are co-fermented in stainless steel and open vats with indigenous yeasts, then malo takes place in barriques. The wine is matured for 12 months in large Slavonian oak casks and concrete tanks. It has an enticing aroma of red and black cherries, almond, spices and balsam. In the mouth it's bright and intense, with a good body and balanced spicy red fruits. Fleshy and succulent, the finish is stony and slightly bitter (in a positive way).

2022 Clos des Lunes Lune d'Argent Blanc (750ml)
Semillon from Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Described by Jeb Dunnuck as “a classy Bordeaux Blanc,” the 92 pt. 2022 Clos des Lunes Lune d'Argent Blanc checks all the boxes for fans of white Bordeaux, revealing fresh aromatic juicy fruit with a hint of saline-tinged minerality on a bright, citrusy finish, a delicious dry French white crafted by the team of Pessac-Leognan’s Domaine de Chevalier that’s bargain priced to stock the cooler and reach for often.

Purchasing a prime estate near Chateaux d’Yquem and Guiraud straddling the communes of Sauternes and Bommes, Clos des Lunes was founded by Domaine de Chevalier owner Olivier Bernard in 2011, establishing the new winery to produce a range of dry white Bordeaux in an area known for sweet wines. Considered outstanding terroir for producing the Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc typically reserved for Sauternes, Clos des Lunes spans over 60 hectares of organically farmed vineyards including numerous parcels of old vines, planted to 70% Semillon and 30% Sauvignon Blanc in a mosaic of gravel soils mixed with clay, sand and limestone on sloping hills. Manually harvesting the grapes plot by plot, the vineyard crew picks on multiple passes throughout the vines in a fashion similar to Sauternes, in this case to ensure only evenly ripened, disease-free grapes are selected. Employing the winemaking expertise of Domaine de Chevalier, the 2022 Clos des Lune Lune D’Argent Blanc was aged in a combination of 30% new French oak barrels for 12 months while the remaining 75% aged on its lees in stainless steel tanks for between 6 to 7 months, described as “light on its feet and refreshing” by the Wine Independent’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown offering aromatic, rich vibrant fruit with a backbone of acidity on a mouthwatering finish.

A terroir-expressive blend balancing the richness of Semillon with vibrant Sauvignon Blanc, the exquisite 92 pt. 2022 Clos des Lune Lune D’Argent was crafted in “an easy drinking style” according to Decanter’s Georgina Hindle by expert producers of Bordeaux Blanc, equally delicious when sipped as an aperitif or enjoyed with food and delivering unbeatable value.

“A highly recommended discovery from Radda in Chianti”

Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Producing “deep, soulful wines loaded with character” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, these highly rated 2019 Caparsa selections from masterful winemaker Paolo Cianferoni are a must for Sangiovese fans and collectors of age worthy Italian red wines, bargain priced for mixing a case or two or selecting a favorite to enjoy over the next decade.

Boasting imposing defensive walls and medieval towers, the centuries old hilltop village of Radda in Chianti boasts a panoramic view overlooking a woven landscape of lush, low-lying forests and manicured vineyards in the middle of Chianti Classico, the cooler hilly terrain yielding wines of “extreme elegance” according to the Wine Enthusiast’s Kerin O’Keefe. Working over 50 harvests at his family’s Radda in Chianti estate since the age of seven, passionate winemaker Paolo Cianferoni is a pioneer in Chianti Classico since taking the reins in 1982, implementing a vineyard-driven approach to crafting his Sangiovese wines and among the first to employ organic viticulture in the region. Described by critic Galloni as “a truly a special place,” Caparsa’s organically certified vineyards span 12 hectares, planted with old vine Sangiovese averaging around 60 years of age in rugged galestro and albarese soils on a hillside around 450 meters above sea level, with most of the estate remaining forested to support biodiversity. Fermenting the hand selected fruit with indigenous yeasts in cement vats in the estate’s centuries’ old cellar and bottling without filtering or fining, the vibrant 93 pt. 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Caparsino was aged in large oak barrels for around 15 months, “giving it a super-classic feel that is absolutely thrilling” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, while noting the smaller production, single vineyard 95 pt. 2019 Doccio a Matteo Riserva boasts “a real sense of exoticness,” aged in a mix of mostly smaller oak casks and cement for over two years before bottling to yield fresh, richly concentrated fruit balanced by fine integrated tannins. Naming it to honor his longtime partner Gianna whose nickname is Mimma, Paolo selected his best grapes for the 96 pt. 2019 Mimma Rosso IGT, aging it in large old casks with nearly 3 years longer in bottle and crafting a rich and uniquely elegant Sangiovese that Galloni describes as “aromatically beguiling and light on its feet.”

From an excellent Chianti vintage producing fresh Sangiovese wines with “wonderful concentration and ripe tannins” according to Jeb Dunnuck, these alluring 2019 Caparsa selections are a reference point for Radda in Chianti while remaining one of the best kept secrets in Chianti Classico, three incredibly delicious and pure expressions of Sangiovese from one of the region’s most undervalued producers promising a decade or more of enjoyment.

95V 94WA

The 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Doccio a Matteo is stellar. Dark, ample and layered, the 2019 possesses remarkable depth and nuance right out of the gate. Black cherry, lavender, licorice, coffee and new leather all flesh out in this deceptively mid-weight Riserva. Impressive.

95 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jul 2022)

A smaller production compared to the Caparsino, with just 6,700 bottles made, the organic Caparsa 2019 Chianti Classico Riserva Doccio a Matteo is 98% Sangiovese with a 2% splash of Colorino. The wine is fermented with spontaneous yeasts and aged in smaller oak cask for the most part with a little percentage of the wine finishing in cement. It shows a dark garnet color with aromas of spicy fruit, plum, blackberry and cherry liqueur. It closes with sweet tannins and medium-rich concentration.

According to the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley, the 2019’s offer “striking aromatic range with notable intensity and persistence of flavor,” describing the 97 pt. 2019 Chateau Canon la Gaffeliere as “full-bodied, ample and layered,” while the “hedonistic” 99 pt. 2019 Chateau Valandraud 99 pt. is “impressively vibrant and charming” with a “lavish core of fruit framed by ripe, polished tannins,” both promising to perform well over the next 20 years.

Describing the 2019 vintage as producing “powerful wines” showcasing Bordeaux’s diverse terroirs, the Wine Spectator’s James Molesworth sums up the 2019 reds as offering “ripe, lush and velvety-textured fruit” with both the Left and Right Banks delivering outstanding value, these top rated selections showing 2019’s hallmark “harmony, balance and freshness” according to James Suckling and delivering the winning combination of approachability and longevity at an unbeatable price.

Inky, glass-staining in colour, this is richly textured and intense, easily rivalling the best ever vintages at the property. Filled with creamy damson and cassis fruit, with a sense of precision and restraint to the frame, held in by fine but plentiful tannins. 30% 1st wine, highest ever Cabenet Sauvignon, 50% new oak for ageing. An exceptional wine, marking 125 years since the founding of Suntory in Japan. Eric Boissenot consultant.

96 points, Jane Anson (Mar 2022)

The 2019 Lagrange has turned out beautifully in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of cherries, blackberries and cassis mingled with hints of loamy soil, pencil shavings and bay leaf. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with an ample core of lively fruit, powdery tannins and succulent acids, it's suave and seamless, concluding with a long, expansive finish. The result of an extremely rigorous selection, and incorporating fully 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, this is the finest wine this château has produced in the modern era. Remarkably, it was released at the same price en primeur as the 2005!

95 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

While I don't think the 2019 Château Lagrange matches the 2018, it's not far off, with a more elegant yet still concentrated style. Beautiful crème de cassis, spicy oak, tobacco, chocolate, and new saddle leather notes all emerge on the nose, and it stays tight, compact, and focused on the palate, with plenty of firm tannins. It opens up beautifully with time in the glass but merits 4-6 years of bottle age, and it should evolve for 20-25 years or more.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Lagrange, which was picked over the longest period ever, has a compelling bouquet of beautifully defined black fruit laced with cedar and light graphite notes. The palate is smooth, fresh and vibrant, with great depth, perfectly judged acidity and a brilliantly focused finish. Winemaker Mathieu Bordes has crafted the best Lagrange in recent years, a benchmark for the estate.

95 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Aromas of blackcurrants, sandalwood and rose petals. Medium-to full-bodied with linear tannins that are racy and refined, yet forceful. Fine tannins at the end. Best after 2024.

94 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

Juicy and flush, with steeped red and black currant and plum fruit flavors, this has a generous edge from start to finish. Features notes of tobacco, singed cedar, warm earth and iron throughout, with a seductive hint of incense curling around the tail end of the finish. This has a generosity that makes it approachable, but there's no rush at all to drink this one. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2023 through 2036. 16,000 cases made, 700 cases imported.

2020 Chateau Fontenil (750ml)
Merlot from Fronsac, Bordeaux, France

Producing “seductive wines” boasting “depth, elegance and freshness” according to the Wine Advocate’s Yohan Castaing, quality in Bordeaux’s under rated Fronsac continues to rise, these top scoring 2020 Fronsac gems sourced from some of the region’s most outstanding producers in an excellent vintage that “delivers the goods” according to Neal Martin of Vinous and a terrific opportunity to stock up on an array of age worthy Bordeaux at a bargain price.

Situated on the Right Bank of the Garonne River northeast of Bordeaux city, Fronsac produces its red wines primarily from vines planted in a rich mix of clay and limestone soils as wells as pockets of a well draining bedrock of clay, chalk and sandstone found at some leading Saint-Emilion estates, blending mainly Merlot with smaller amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cab Franc and often competing with wines from neighboring St. Emilion according to Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson “but at far better prices.” Described as “just gorgeous” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the 93 pt. 2020 Chateau De La Dauphine boasts perfumed dark fruit with firm, soft tannins, while the “solidly built” 93 pt. 2020 Chateau Moulin Haut-Laroque “has good tension from underlying chalky minerality” according to the Wine Spectator’s James Molesworth, both promising to evolve over the next decade. Crafted by former Mouton-Rothschild winemaker Patrick Leon, Neal Martin of Vinous calls the 94 pt. 2020 Chateau Les Trois Croix “a fabulous Fronsac” offering perfumed dark fruit with “a precise quite minerally finish that is pure class” while the “straight up impressive” 95 pt. 2020 Chateau Fontenil boasts layers of spiced dark fruit and a “supple, elegant texture” according to Jeb Dunnuck, summing it up “a winner and well worth a case purchase.” Described as “one of the go-to names in the appellation” by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson, the “superb” 93 pt. 2020 Chateau La Vieille Cure is “rich and sumptuous in the glass” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous with “gorgeous depth and texture,” its silky tannins built to enjoy over the next decade and beyond.

From an undervalued, under the radar region delivering “high quality at a sensible price” according to Decanter’s Stephen Brooks, these superb 2020 Fronsac selections offer top value from “a great modern-day Bordeaux vintage,” according to Antonio Galloni, unbeatably priced for Bordeaux bargain hunters to stock the cellar and enjoy the satisfaction of a great deal with every pour.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Fontenil slowly emerges from the glass with powerful notes of plum preserves, blueberry compote, and blackberry pie, followed by suggestions of licorice, tar, violets, and crushed rocks. The full-bodied palate is laden with vibrant, expressive black fruits, supported by plush tannins and lovely tension, finishing on a lingering aniseed note.

95 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Mar 2023)

The classic 2020 Château Fontenil from this Fronsac château is a winner and well worth a case purchase. Giving up lots of spiced red and black fruits, smoked tobacco, and flowery incense notes, it's medium to full-bodied, has a round, supple, elegant texture, beautiful tannins, and nicely integrated oak. This sexy, seamless, straight-up impressive Fronsac will evolve for at least a decade.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

This has aromas of plums, orange zest, thyme and nutmeg. Medium-bodied, with tight tannins and fresh acidity. Vibrant and pretty, with so much tension throughout. Better from 2025.

2022 Girolamo Russo Etna Rosato (750ml)
Nerello Mascalese from Etna, Sicily, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

92WA 92JS 91V 91D

The Girolamo Russo 2022 Etna Rosato reveals a floral bouquet with wildflowers, peach blossom and whiffs of zagara, or Sicilian lemon blossom. It offers subtle support at the back thanks to an especially fine and crisp mouthfeel. It could pair with something a little more complicated like raw fish.

92 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jun 2023)

This shows subtle notes of pink cherries, peach skins, dried orange peel and dried flowers. Medium-bodied, delicate and sleek, with a freshness and crunchy acidity. Delicious with a textural, polished finish. Drink now.

92 points, James Suckling (Sep 2023)

Sweet rose, stone dust and orange sorbet make the 2022 Etna Rosato a total pleasure on the nose. Soothingly round and with a pleasant inner sweetness, this flows across the palate with crisp, mineral-tinged orchard fruits offset by a hint of sour citrus. The 2022 finishes intensely mineral in style while leaving the mouth watering as hints of sour melon gradually fade.

91 points, Eric Guido, Vinous (Sep 2023)

A selection of 80-year-old Nerello Mascalese vines from the lower part of the vineyard in Contrada San Lorenzo on the north side of Etna, this rosé has a short contact with the skins and sees only stainless steel. Hints of white peach and green and red fruit aromas accompany some spice and minerals in the mouth, with a touch of creaminess in the background. Fresh, succulent strawberry and raspberry flavours linger on a saline finish.

2015 Clos du Marquis (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Saint-Julien, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

95JS 94WE 93JD 93WA

Extremely perfumed with blackberries, plums and bark. Lemon-rind undertones. Full-bodied, creamy, velvety and voluptuous yet focused and pinpointed. Intense dark-berry and chocolate flavors. Really well done. Drink in 2021.

95 points, James Suckling (Feb 2018)

Rich, ripe, and elegant, this wine comes from a separate parcel of Léoville las Cases that is treated as a distinct wine. With fine, dusty tannins and juicy acidity, it offers both richness and black currants from the Cabernet Sauvignon. It needs to age and should be ready to drink from 2025.

94 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Apr 2018)

The 2015 Clos Du Marquis is gorgeous, but one of the more backward, closed wines in the vintage. Made from 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, aged in 50% new oak, it’s deep purple color is followed by promising notes of blackcurrants, smoked earth, tobacco and lead pencil. With full-bodied richness, a ripe, concentrated, structured feel, and impressive length, I wouldn’t touch bottles for at least 7-8 years, and it should last for two decades or more.

93+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2017)

A blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc, the medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Clos du Marquis gives up expressive notes of warm mulberries, kirsch and blackberry pie with touches of sandalwood, potpourri, anise and charcuterie. The palate is medium to full-bodied with a great core of rich, spicy fruit framed by plush tannins and finishing with an invigorating lift.

Nerina is one of my favorite whites from Etna, especially when consumed young and fresh. The Girolamo Russo 2022 Etna Bianca Nerina is especially crisp and bright with a polished, glossy feel. Aromas of citrus, white peach and honey rise to the top. Honestly, I've never been able to hold onto a bottle long enough to trace its evolution.

93 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jun 2023)

This is perfumed with notes of citrus blossom and citrus leaf as well as white peaches and chalky soil. Beautiful texture with a medium body and vivid acidity cutting through. Sleek and delicious with a refreshing, minty finish. Drink or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (Sep 2023)

The 2022 Etna Bianco Nerina is a total pleasure to take in, wafting up with a tropical-inspired yet refined bouquet of fresh mangos, bananas, mint leaves and sweet smoke. It’s soft and round in texture with ripe yellow pit fruits. A candied lemon spritz adds a lovely zestiness. This finishes quite mineral in style, nearly crunchy in feel with citrus and kiwi notes. The 2022 is almost too easy to like, yet the balance is spot on.

2019 Vina Sena Sena (375ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Aconcagua Valley, Chile
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Eduardo Chadwick is one of the most important people of the vine in Chile – the world for that matter – facing multiple obstacles throughout his impressive career. For nearly a decade Eduardo worked to rebuild the iconic Viña Errázuriz, restoring his family's 19th century estate to its former glory. As Eduardo was gaining ground, California's most famous man of the vine paid the country a visit in 1990. Robert Mondavi fell in love with Chile and would soon be introduced to his counterpart in the region. By 1995, the two had reached a pioneering agreement – Seña was born. For four long, grueling years the two passionate visionaries toiled over vineyard sites in search of the perfect terroir for their dream wine. This was to be Chile's icon above all others. Site was paramount.

Located in the Valle de Aconcagua, on a 42 hectare colluvial vineyard of well drained gravel, rock and loam, the Seña vineyard is planted to the perfect mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Syrah. The slightly cooler temperatures of this elevated, sloping site allow for long, slow ripening. The Seña vineyard is often harvested two weeks after its nearest neighbor. Precious few wines in the country will compete; perhaps none – after all, perfection is incredibly rare.

This is a wine above all others ever bottled in Chile. A wine which is rightly described by Neal Martin as "The peripatetic wine that goes around the world challenging and, let it be said, often defeating First Growths in blind tastings."

98WA 98JS 96JA

The 2019 Seña was produced with a Bordeaux blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Malbec, 15% Carmenere and 4% Petit Verdot with the Chilean character of the high percentage of Carmenere. Most of the volume fermented in stainless steel with some 10% in concrete vats, and the final blend matured for 22 months in French oak barrels, 80% of them new, and 10% in Stockinger vats. It's 13.5% alcohol and has good acidity and freshness, coming through as medium-bodied, elegant and balanced. This is incredibly elegant, subtle and harmonious even at this early stage. It has floral aromas, notes of orange peel, a touch of creamy sweet spices and great freshness. The palate is medium-bodied, seamless and pure, with pungent flavors and a soft texture. It's long, clean, defined and super tasty. I feel this wine is getting better and better by the vintage. The grapes were picked quite early, and that helped to contain the ripeness and seems to have been a great decision. There was also an exception in the Panquehue zone where the Seña vines are, where the summer was cooler than the average, so quite different to many other regions in Chile. 100,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2021.

98 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Issue # 256 - Aug 2021)

Such beautiful aromas of crushed berries, currants, walnuts, allspice and nutmeg follow through to a full body with tight, ultra fine tannins that provide length and intensity. A finish of slightly dried cherries with wet earth, slate and stone. Chewy and fine-grained. A wine with soul and length. Give it time.

98 points, James Suckling (Sep 2021)

The 25th anniversary vintage, and an excellent showcase of the supple, nuanced fruits of this wine. Plenty of black cherry and bilberry puree, pure but layered. It has the rich depths that always delivers, where things are almost too much and yet not quite enough, still leaving you wanting more. Fragrant raspberry leaf becomes clearer as it opens in the glass, as does the saline minerality and a smoky finish, with the tannins becoming more delicate by the minute, highlighting freshness and juice. Located in the Aconguacgua foothills, following biodynamic farming. Tasted twice.
