Roederer Estate Brut (750ml)
Sparkling from Anderson Valley, California
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Described as “the best and most consistent sparkling wine producer on the West Coast” by the Wine Spectator’s Tim Fish, the vibrant 94 pt. Roederer Estate NV Brut lives up to Louis Roederer Champagne's iconic reputation, offering appealing layers of fresh fruit hinting of brioche with crisp acidity and a finely beaded mousse, an unmatched value in California sparkling wine bargain priced to enjoy freely now and over the next few years.

Founded by the family-owned Louis Roederer Champagne over four decades ago, Roederer Estate was established in Mendocino County’s foggy Anderson Valley as a “grower house” that sources its grapes exclusively from 620 acres of estate vineyards. Considered an outlier at the time with most sparkling producers setting up shop in Napa Valley, fifth generation descendent and then president Jean-Claude Rouzard believed the terroir in remote Mendocino County was perfect for the champagne house’s sparkling wine project, the cooling waves of fog off the Pacific balanced by warmer daytime temperatures allowing the grapes to mature slowly and develop rich phenolic complexity while maintaining acidity. Over its 41 year history, consistency has played another key role in Roederer Estate’s success, with only two winemakers, both of French origins, producing the estate’s cuvees and currently under the direction of Alsace-born Arnaud Weyrich who took the reins in 2002. A blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir, Roederer Estate’s vineyards are organically and biodynamically farmed with meticulous consideration of the estate’s varied range of clay and gravel soils guiding viticulture, their proximity to the winery ensuring a quick pressing at harvest. Adding 15% of the estate’s oak-aged reserve wines spanning five vintages to the blend, the Roederer Estate Brut was fermented in stainless steel to retain freshness and precision and aged for 2 ½ years on the lees, yielding a Champagne-style, mineral driven sparkling wine with layered fruit and a savory creaminess that rises on a stream of steady small bubbles, finishing with a citrus acidity and brightness that’s “delightful” according to James Suckling.

In an interview with the Wine Spectator, winemaker Weyrich reiterated the key element the 94 pt. Roederer Estate Brut NV shares with all exceptional wines, noting “Something speaks underneath all these wines, and it’s the sense of place,” the terroir-driven Roederer Estate Brut NV an easy choice for Champagne lovers and fans of complex sparkling wines seeking value to stock the cooler and reach for without hesitation, this outstanding price its own reason to celebrate.

Hints of phenolics provide a fine texture. Vibrant acidity. About 15% reserve wine (mostly chardonnay) in this, from five vintages. 2.5 years on the lees. 60% chardonnay and 40% pinot noir. Drink or hold.

Described as “a textbook example of the cool Awatere Valley style” by Decanter’s Bob Campbell, the crisp and zesty 94 pt. 2022 Astrolabe Sauvignon Blanc boasts Marlborough's fresh enticing aromas of citrusy, tropical fruit finishing with a hint of tangy minerality, a refreshingly delicious New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc unbeatably priced to pour and enjoy freely.

Located on the Rapaura Road just below the Wairau River, winemaker Simon Waghorn established his small family-owned winery on New Zealand’s South Island in 1996, naming it Astrolabe after the astronomical instrument used by the pioneering navigators who first explored the Marlborough Sounds in the 19th century. Described as “a consistently delicious label” by the Wine Enthusiast’s Christina Pickard, Astrolabe sources top quality Sauvignon Blanc from long term contracts with a small group of growers in the Awatere Valley as well as parcels in Wairau, the Southern Valleys and the Kekerengu Coast, the sustainably farmed vineyards boasting a cooler climate with a diverse range of soils and growing conditions that contribute layers of complexity. After harvesting the grapes during the coolest part of the day, Simon preserved the freshness of the grapes for the 2022 Astrolabe Sauvignon Blanc throughout fermentation and aging, yielding elegantly balanced ripe citrus flavors with subtle notes of tropical fruit balanced by Marlborough's signature herbaceous minerality and a refreshing savory, dry finish that draws you back for another sip.

Celebrating its 25th vintage in 2022, the bright and crisp 94 pt. 2022 Astrolabe Sauvignon Blanc is one of the year’s top rated New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs and an appealing choice for an everyday white, named a Wine Spectator Value Pick that's ready to enjoy often over the next few years at an equally appealing bargain price.

2019 Artadi Vinas de Gain (750ml)
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation

Crafted by the renowned 100 pt. winemaker known for putting vineyard-driven Rioja on the map, the rich and elegant 94 pt. 2019 Artadi Vinas de Gain is a Rioja lovers' dream, a beautifully crafted Tempranillo offering lush aromas and vivid, pure flavors with a velvety, uplifted finish, incredibly bargain priced for stocking up to enjoy often.

Founded as a local coop in Rioja Alavesa, Artadi has been transformed since the early 1990’s under the groundbreaking leadership of fourth generation winemaker Juan Carlos López de Lacalle, crafting the Bodegas’ first 100 pt. Rioja in 2004 and eventually leaving the Rioja DOC in 2015 to focus on its vineyard-expressive wines. Exhibiting the characteristic vibrant red fruit and dusty minerality that reflects its Alavesa terroir, the 2019 Vinas de Gain is sourced from Tempranillo vines ranging from 20 to 30 years of age, planted at altitudes between 450 and 700 meters in clay and limestone soils and all farmed organically. After overseeing the hand harvesting of grapes with strict selection, Juan Carlos aged the 2019 Vinas de Gain for 9 months in French barriques, yielding “a fresh, fruit-driven and juicy red” according to the Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez with smooth, silky tannins on a backbone of well-integrated oak.

From a Rioja vintage called “a perfect year” by Decanter’s Amaya Cervera, the outstanding 94 pt. 2019 Artadi Vinas de Gain reflects an undeniable pedigree, a pure expression of its unique Rioja Alavesa terroir meticulously crafted by one of Spain’s most acclaimed winemakers, an incomparable value for Rioja lovers and anyone looking for a deliciously satisfying red wine to reach for again and again.

Intense and focused nose with ripe blackberries, dark strawberries, iron, wild herbs and spices. Pretty tense and broad on the palate with a plethora of fresh, vertical tannins. Vibrant and fruit expressive. Tempranillo. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

94 points, James Suckling (Oct 2022)

The young red 2019 Viñas de Gaín was produced with Tempranillo grapes from different vineyards in Laguardia and Elvillar at 450 to 700 meters in altitude, and it fermented in oak and stainless steel vats followed by malolactic in barrel and an élevage in barrel for nine months. They aimed for a fresh, fruit-driven and juicy red that comes from a low-yielding year, so the wine is concentrated but keeps the approachable style. It has nice balance. In warmer and riper years, they do shorter macerations at lower temperature and a short élevage to keep the aromatic and fruit-driven character, avoiding heavy wines. This is always a very good value within the Artadi range. 90,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2020.

2021 Colene Clemens Vineyards Pinot Noir Dopp Creek (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Willamette, Oregon
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

From a year Decanter’s Clive Pursehouse calls “a five star vintage for the Willamette Valley,” this selection of 21 exceptional 2021 Oregon Pinot Noir offers a comprehensive range of the vintage’s top rated wines value priced for lovers and collectors of exceptional Pinot Noir, a vintage filled with high scoring Pinots “worthy of your investment of time and money” according to Jeb Dunnuck whether selecting a few favorites or mixing a case.

After a challenging 2020 vintage of unprecedented wildfires in which many producers did not even produce red wines, Willamette Valley winemakers enjoyed a relatively easy 2021 growing season, starting with warm and dry conditions at the beginning of the vines’ dormant season in Fall 2020 and followed by a Winter without any significant damage despite severe snow and ice storms. Following budbreak in mid-April, an early bloom occurred in the first part of June with heavy rains that normally would have been problematic had they not been followed by a record setting “heat dome” when temperatures reached up to an astounding 117.5°F over a three day period across the Pacific Northwest, the wet soil protecting the vines from damage and encouraging healthy growth. The warm and dry remainder of the season prevented any mildew or disease, while cooler temperatures and substantial rain in September allowed the grapes to fully ripen and led to an extended and nearly perfect harvest producing “concentrated Pinot Noirs with fine tannins sure to become age worthy collectables” according to Decanter.

Describing the 2021 Oregon growing season, Audrey Frick of Jeb Dunnuck sums it up as “a stellar vintage, with the wines displaying an outstanding balance of ripeness, depth, and tension" and "equally compelling" as wines from California and Burgundy at a fraction of the price, these exceptional, top rated 2021 Oregon Pinots certain to match a broad array of individual tastes and all over delivering value.

This expressive red is dynamic, yet retains a sense of elegance and refinement, showing pomegranate and blueberry flavors underscored by river stone and dusky spice accents. Builds tension toward lively tannins. Drink now through 2032. 4,888 cases made.

94 points, Tim Fish, Wine Spectator (2023)

A juicy and tasty pinot with aromas of dark cherries, sliced mushrooms, chocolate strawberries, cardamom and nutmeg. Medium-bodied, creamy and well-balanced, with fine-grained tannins and a bright finish. Drink now or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (Apr 2023)

The 2021 Pinot Noir Dopp Creek takes on a deep transparent ruby color and offers aromas of toasted baking spices, ripe red and black raspberry, cardamom, and fresh pine. Medium-bodied, with juicy fruit up front, it fills the palate with fine tannins, and its more serious structure shows itself after the more primary fruit subsides on the palate. It will do well with another 6-12 months in bottle. Drink it over the coming 6-8 years.

“A very strong, if not truly exceptional vintage for Napa Valley”

Jeb Dunnuck

A benchmark Napa Cab from a “classic vintage in the making” according to James Suckling, there’s much to like about the powerful and luxurious 95 pt. 2021 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon, its layers of fresh, juicy dark fruit well balanced by bright, vibrant acidity with a long and complex finish, continuing the legacy of Quintessa founder Agustin Huneeus Sr. as one of Coombsville’s pioneering vintners and a top value among Napa Cabs that’s ready to enjoy over the next decade.

Painted in somber black and topped with an ominous, gothic style steeple, the striking 1870’s Victorian mansion called the Faust Haus is located 25 miles north of Coombsville near St. Helena on a hillside overlooking the lush valley floor, its modern decorator-designed tasting rooms and expansive outdoor verandas reflecting the signature luxurious style of the Faust Cabernet Sauvignon. Renowned as the CEO who transformed Concha y Toro into a global brand before becoming a leader in the California wine industry, longtime vintner Agustin Huneeus recognized the potential of the lesser known Coombsville long before it became an AVA and purchased the 113-acre Lewis Dairy Farm east of the town of Napa in 1998 to plant Cabernet Sauvignon, Faust now one of the appellation’s oldest vineyards and joined over the last two decades by some of the Napa’s top winemakers including Andy Erickson and Paul Hobbs. Located in one of Napa’s coolest subzones with temperatures nearly 10 degrees lower than most of the region, the 128-acre hillside Faust vineyard is planted in well-draining rocky, volcanic soils influenced by fog and marine breezes from nearby San Pablo Bay, the extended growing season allowing the grapes to develop complex flavors while preserving acidity. Sourced from a low yielding vintage that produced smaller concentrated grapes, winemaker David Jelinek blended mostly Cabernet Sauvignon from the Coombsville estate along with smaller lots from mountain and valley terroirs throughout Napa and aged the 2021 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon for 20 months in 25% new French oak, yielding a deliciously smooth Cab that’s already drinking beautifully and built for years of enjoyment.

From the legendary founder of Quintessa and a pioneer of Napa’s Coombsville AVA, the rich and satisfying 95 pt. 2021 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon offers a harmonious balance of luscious ripe fruit and tantalizing acidity from a superb vintage, an affordable luxury for Napa Cab fans seeking an outstanding value that promises pleasurable drinking for years to come.

Inviting aromas of ripe blackcurrants and blackberries as well as crushed walnuts, cedar andbark. Full-bodied, creamy and structured with firm, polished tannins. Balanced and even with a lingering finish. Better after 2026.

95 points, James Suckling (Sep 2023)

Packed and broad in feel, with a ganache note draped over black currant, blackberry and steeped cherry. Licorice root and alder smoke flavors check in on the finish as the fruit pumps through, ending with a flash of violet. Hard to resist now, but this has some development ahead. Drink now through 2036. 50,000 cases made.

94 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Feb 2024)

Focused on cabernet from the Faust estate in Coombsville, this includes fruit from the Huneeus family’s vineyards in Yountville and Oak Knoll, all relatively cool districts that combine in a brisk, red-fruited cabernet with cherry freshness. A bright young thing with a lot to say, it tastes like just-picked fruit, its spicy tannins supple and gracious, cool and lasting.

Declared “one of the headline wineries in Montepulciano” by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, B-21 fans and collectors of rich Tuscan reds won’t need convincing to stock up on the enticing 93 pt. 2019 Dei Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, a powerful Sangiovese revealing bright, aromatic red fruit hinting of wild herbs and earthy spice with a smooth, enduring finish, earning a coveted spot on this year's Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2023 and an outstanding value promising pleasurable drinking for years to come.

Situated in the spectacular countryside southeast of Siena in Tuscany’s oldest appellation, Cantine Dei produces terroir-driven Sangiovese from the vineyards surrounding the medieval town of Montepulciano, its 2019 Vino Nobile awarded the top rating of Tre Bicchieri or “three glasses” by Italy’s most prestigious wine publication Gambero Rosso, known by insiders as the “Wine Bible of Italy.” Producing its first wines in 1985 and run by third generation Caterina Dei since 1991, the Cantine Dei estate extends over 100 hectares in the rolling hills of the historic Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG, its 60 hectares of organically farmed vineyards located throughout the region and reflecting its diverse terroir. Sourced from the estate’s Martiena, La Ciarliana and Cervognano vineyards, the Sangiovese vines for the 2019 Vino Nobile are planted in a mix of tuff, limestone and sandy clay soils at 250 to 350 meters above sea level, the high-altitude vineyards producing richly concentrated fruit with well balanced acidity. A blend of mostly Sangiovese fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts, the lush 2019 Dei Vino di Montepulciano was aged for 18 months in large Slavonian oak casks followed by over 8 months in bottle, yielding “a skillful interpretation of terroir and vintage” according to Decanter’s Michaela Morris with richly textured fruit and layers of well-integrated tannins promising longevity.

Ranked among an elite group of 2019’s top scoring Vino Nobiles from a region “that should be on everyone’s radar” according to the Wine Enthusiast’s Kerin O’Keefe, the rich and elegant 93 pt. 2019 Dei Vino Nobile di Montepulciano “continues to be one of the benchmarks in its category and an amazing value as well” according to Vinous critic Eric Guido, matching in quality to its higher profile Tuscan neighbors at a bargain price and a sure bet for lovers of bold Sangiovese wines seeking an outstanding value to enjoy whenever a taste of Tuscany calls.

Extremely perfumed and fresh with an elegant and attractive nose. Medium-bodied with ultra-fine, delicate tannins and a delicious finish. So delicious. Drink now.

Wild herbs, black cherries and exotic spices create a wildly inviting bouquet as the 2019 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano opens in the glass. This is undeniably silky and elegant on the palate. Fleshy red fruits are neatly framed by bright acids, as balsam and mocha notes form toward the close. 2019 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Alexander Valley, California
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Described as “a veritable Cabernet Sauvignon tour de force” by the Wine Spectator’s James Laube, the lush and concentrated 2019 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley lives up to the hype, revealing fresh aromatic fruit hinting of spiced vanilla and rustic herbs with supple, velvet tannins and a signature silky smooth finish, delivering Silver Oak’s consistently exceptional quality and sheer drinkability at a best on the market price.

Located just north of Healdsburg in Sonoma County’s warmest appellation, the Silver Oak Alexander Valley winery features a modern barn-inspired tasting room with floor to ceiling glass walls framing panoramic vineyard views, the surrounding 75 acres planted exclusively to Cabernet Sauvignon in the Alexander Valley AVA. Founded as a partnership in 1972 to produce a single wine from Cabernet Sauvignon, Silver Oak was established by Ray Duncan and Justin Meyers on a 258-acre dairy property on the Oakville Cross Road, the dairy barn’s location halfway between the Silverado Trail and Oakville inspiring its name. Brought in by Duncan to craft the wine, founder and former co-owner Justin Meyer was driven to create an American version of Chateau Latour, but instead using American oak to age the Cabernet Sauvignon in barrels first purchased from Beaulieu Vineyards. Now completely family-owned and run by Ray’s sons David and Tim Duncan, Silver Oak produced the 2019 Alexander Valley with 95% Cabernet Sauvignon, always a higher percentage than its Napa bottling, blending it from the Alexander Estate and the Miraval and Red Tail Vineyards at the southern end of the AVA close to the Russian River as well as Crazy Creek a few miles north of the winery, the diverse growing conditions and rocky volcanic soils adding rich complexity to the final blend. Sourced from “a brilliant vintage for Cabernet Sauvignon” according to Jeb Dunnuck, winemaker David Weiss, formerly at Patz and Hall and Antinori’s Antica Napa Valley, crafted the final blend of the 2019 Silver Oak Alexander Valley prior to aging, a signature of the harmonious Silver Oak style, transferring it to American oak barrels from Silver Oak’s own cooperage and aging it for 24 months, yielding a lush, concentrated Cab with well-integrated tannins that’s ready to drink upon release and built to cellar for decades.

Gaining “a legion of cult-like fans for nearly 40 years with a consistent, drinkable style” according to the Wine Spectator’s James Laube, Silver Oak collectors and lovers of smooth, age worthy California Cabs won’t need convincing to stock up on the smooth and satisfying 2019 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon, reflecting its 50 year quality legacy and promising pleasurable drinking at value pricing that makes it easy to pull the cork more often.

Aged in 50% new and 50% second-use American Oak from the Duncan family's The Oak cooperage in Higbee, Missouri. Matt Duncan joined me for my tasting, and he says the Petit Verdot in the blend, of which there is 0.4%, is co-fermented with the Cabernet Sauvignon, intended to bring focus to the Cabernet fruit. A compelling, brooding, muscular rendition of Cabernet from Alexander Valley with gorgeous boysenberry notes, black currants, and rose petals laced with vanillin notes and toasty oak. Medium to full-bodied with black currants, ripe blackberry and black cherry notes framed by velvety tannins laced with that irresistible vanillin note. Toasty oak spices lend a hint of sweetness, balanced by grippy acidity. Long and complex, revealing umami, garrigue, and crushed slatestone on the finish. It's a terrific wine from the Alexander Valley.

Known for his larger-than-life personality and flamboyant velvet jacket attire, Burgundy-born Jean-Charles Boisset is a true believer that great wines are made in the vineyard, his first priority after purchasing Raymond Vineyards in 2009 to upgrade the existing 90-acre property and implement organic and biodynamic viticulture. Established in Napa Valley over 50 years by long-time Beringer winemaker Roy Raymond, Raymond Vineyards now spans over 300 acres in Rutherford and St. Helena, the vineyards and winemaking managed under the direction of 100 pt. consulting winemaker Phillipe Melka since 2009. In addition to gaining organic and biodynamic certification for the vineyards and building one of Napa's largest solar panel projects to generate electricity for the winery, Boisset hired former Far Niente winemaker Stephanie Putnam to work alongside Melka to refine the blends, consistently garnering 90 plus point ratings throughout her tenure. Grown in cooler vineyards in south Napa and Carneros, the elegant 92 pt. 2021 Raymond Chardonnay Reserve Selection comes from “a classic vintage in the making” according to James Suckling, barrel fermented in 18% new French oak without malolactic fermentation and sur lie aged for 10 months before being bottled and yielding aromatic fresh fruit hinting of toasty spice with vibrant acidity.

2022 Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc Reserve (750ml)
Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand
B-21 Top Recommendation

Fans of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and anyone seeking a delicious, easy to pour white won’t want to miss the enticing 93 pt. 2022 Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc Reserve, a perfect balance of fragrant and richly textured citrus and tropical fruit and crisp saline-tinged acidity produced in a region “known for its purity” according to James Suckling and a stunning under $20 value.

With family roots in New Zealand dating back to 1867, the Neylon family were pioneers in aquaculture, building a successful business growing and exporting green lipped mussels before partnering with the Wiffin family to establish an orchard business and later converting the land to vineyards. Planting his initial parcel of commercial vines in the lower Wairau Valley in the early 2000’s, third generation John Neylon released the first vintage of Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc in 2007, expanding vineyard holdings over the next decades to become one of the largest family-owned wineries in New Zealand. Nestled in the heart of the Wairau Plains on the South Island, Rapaura’s sustainably farmed vineyards are planted on well-drained stony soils over crystalline springs fed by melting snow from the peaks of the Southern Alps that eliminate the need for irrigation. Crafting the Reserve to reflect “the diversity of the flavors produced in Marlborough wine,” according to winemaker Mike Bann, the 2022 Sauvignon Blanc Reserve was sourced from top vineyards in the Dillons Point and Wairau sub-regions, lending the 2022 Reserve aromatic notes of ripe passion fruit and a distinct, refreshing minerality. Immediately pressing the grapes after harvest, the succulent 2022 Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc Reserve was batch fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel to preserve its fresh flavors, yielding a precise, clean palate with a bright, persistent finish, a beautifully balanced Kiwi Sauv Blanc summed up by Decanter’s Tina Gellie as “Excellent.”

From an outstanding vintage for fans and collectors of California Pinot Noir, these top rated 2021 selections offer a comprehensive range of styles matching an array of individual tastes, all value priced for stocking up on a favorite and perfect for mixing a case.

Regardless of which microclimate it hails from, Pinot Noir in the Sonoma Coast AVA enjoyed consistently moderate growing conditions in 2021, with warm weather in the early part of the year kicking off the growing season early. The summer was marked by cool temperatures and dry conditions without prolonged heat spikes that yielded even ripening with extended hangtime and steady yields. Calling the 2021 Sonoma Coast Pinots “fabulous,” Antonio Galloni of Vinous describes them as “potent, brooding wines with dark fruit profiles and tons of textural depth” their deep structure and superb balance promising longevity. Situated about 350 miles south of Sonoma’s Russian River Valley, the Central Coast also enjoyed a cooler growing season in 2021, described by Jeb Dunnuck as an “undeniably great vintage” that “will be loved by those who prioritize finesse and elegance.” Experiencing a long even growing season without any heat spikes, dry conditions in the Central Coast required a judicious use of irrigation in 2021 that produced healthy fruit but smaller yields, the top talent in the region producing rich and age worthy Pinot. Jeb Dunnuck describes the 2021 Central Coast Pinots as “fresh, vibrant, yet concentrated wines with the up-front purity and charm to drink well today, yet the structure and depth to age gracefully,” while Antonio Galloni of Vinous declared the favorable conditions produced “a wide range of exceptional, world-class wines.”

Summing up the 2021 vintage for California Pinot, the Wine Spectator’s Aaron Romano declares “2021 has all the makings of a banner year for California, especially for Pinot Noir. There were no extreme heatwaves and yields were slightly lower than average, which has translated into reds with expressive fruit character and natural vibrancy,” these impressive 2021 Cali Pinot Noir selections showcasing a range of styles offered at value pricing to enjoy now and over the next decades.

Crafted from a selection of the estate’s best quality Sangiovese grapes, the elegant 96 pt. 2019 Castello di Bossi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione offers rich, brambly fruit hinting of crushed herbs and exotic spice with refreshing acidity, an exceptional, top tier Chianti Classico from “one of the headline estates” of Castelnuovo Berardenga according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner and a stunning value.

With a history dating back to the 9th century, the Castello di Bossi winery was founded in 1984 by entrepreneur Marco Bacci in the Chianti Classico hills east of Siena, its wines crafted under the direction of superstar Tuscan-born consulting winemaker Alberto Antonini. Located on an estate spanning over 800 hectares, Castello di Bossi’s 130 hectares of organically farmed vineyards are situated on rolling hillsides at altitudes averaging 350 meters above sea level, planted mostly to Sangiovese in a mix of tuffs, yellow clays, calcareous sands and broken stones. Introduced as the highest quality category in Chianti Classico in 2013, the rigorous guidelines for Gran Selezione require it to be crafted from all estate grown fruit with a minimum of 80% Sangiovese and aged for at least 30 months prior to release, compared to 12 months for Chianti Classico and 24 months for Chianti Classico Riserva. Crafted from 100% Sangiovese sourced from the Corbaia Vineyard boasting vines over 40 years of age as well as parcels throughout the estate, the richly concentrated 2019 Castello di Bossi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione was fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks before aging two years in large 500 liter French tonneaux followed by 6 months in bottle, yielding fragrant luscious fruit and bright acidity with lithe, silky tannins built for years of enjoyment on an elegant finish.

From a Chianti Classico vintage producing wines of “exceptional balance” and “terrific depth” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the alluring 96 pt. 2019 Castello di Bossi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione ranks among the vintage's top-rated wines, a superb value for Chianti lovers and collectors of Tuscany’s top reds to stash away and enjoy over the next decade and beyond.

Spanning 160 acres within five AVA’s, the grapes were hand harvested from the estate’s sustainably farmed vineyards throughout the Napa Valley including Stags Leap, Howell Mountain, Oakville, Rutherford and Carneros, the outstanding 2021 vintage producing below average yields of small, intensely flavored berries. 2019 Fattoria la Massa Toscana (750ml)
Sangiovese from Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Described as “one of the most electric wineries in Italy” by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, it’s easy to love the elegant 96 pt. 2019 Fattoria la Massa Toscana, a meticulously balanced Super Tuscan style red revealing lush, juicy fresh fruit with enticing minerality on a precise, savory finish and a superb value for Italian wine lovers and fans of bold Sangiovese blends seeking a bargain priced red to enjoy often.

Considered both a visionary and renegade in the region, the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner calls winemaker Giampaolo Motta “the secret sauce” of La Massa, his decision to produce a declassified red in lieu of a Chianti Classico inspired by his time spent in Bordeaux. Located in the spectacular Conca d’Oro or “Golden Basin” of Panzano amphitheater also home to top Chianti producers including Fontodi and Castello di Rampolla, Giampaolo purchased the 45 hectare La Massa property in the early 1990’s, implementing a lengthy restoration of the historic estate’s 27 hectares of sustainably farmed hillside vineyards and building a new state of the art winery designed by the same architects responsible for facilities at Chateaux Latour, Petrus and Mouton Rothschild. Initially working under the direction of famed enologist and friend Carlo Ferrini, Giampaolo has relied on renowned French consultant Stephane Derenoncourt since 2008 to refine the entry level Toscana along with his flagship Giorgio Primo blend, leaning “strongly towards Bordeaux for inspiration” according to critic Antonio Galloni while reflecting its vineyard origins in Panzano, the estate more recently energized by an investment from the Tommasi Family Estates of Valpolicella. Situated northwest of the town of Panzano, La Massa’s vines are planted with a southern facing exposure at elevations from 315 to 460 meters above sea level in mostly clay mixed with schistous galestro, the soil enhancing graphite aromas and adding distinct minerality to the 2019 Toscana. Blending 50% Sangiovese with Merlot, Petit Verdot and a small amount of Alicante Bousquet that darkens the color, Giampaolo aged the harmonious and refined 2019 Fattoria la Massa Toscana in mostly stainless steel with 20% in barrique, around 10% of the barrels from new French oak, yielding fresh, fragrant fruit balanced by vibrant acidity and well-integrated tannins, summed up as “a little masterpiece” by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner.

Describing it as “both a fabulous expression of the estate and a ridiculous value,” the enticing 96 pt. 2019 Fattoria la Massa Toscana “delivers the goods" according to Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, a delicious and well-crafted Super Tuscan blend bargain priced for less than many of its high profile neighbors' Chianti Classicos that’s not only one of the region’s top values but one of the best red wine values in all of Italy.

96WI 94WA

This 2019 La Massa is a blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It starts with smoke, spice and bitter cherry notes on the nose. Oak notes dominate at first but on standing it opens up to fragrant, floral notes like rose and iris. On the palate it is round and smooth but not too heavy. This is a very stylish wine that manages to balance elegance with plenty of depth of flavor, tied together with juicy acidity and fine tannins. I love the purity, brightness of this wine and the deft touch of the winemaker. There is a brilliance to the fruit and a high quality to the tannins which mark it out as something special.

96 points, Susan Hulme, Wine Independent (Jan 2023)

The estate's entry-level 2019 La Massa is 50% Sangiovese and 30% Merlot, with the remaining 20% of the blend Petit Verdot and Alicante Bouschet. The wine sees mostly stainless steel, although 20% of the total finishes in barrique. Because the Sangiovese grape does not produce very dense wines, La Massa gets its dark appearance from the other grapes, especially the Alicante Bouschet. It follows that those carefully selected blending elements also contribute to the wine's juicy concentration and black fruit flavors. However, the pretty minerality you sense here and the balanced freshness certainly come from the Sangiovese. This vintage yields tight and linear results. Production was also generous in 2019, with 120,000 bottles released. This is a little masterpiece at an affordable price.

2015 Lopez de Heredia Vina Cubillo Tinto Crianza (750ml)
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation

“Lopez de Heredia is the apotheosis of traditional, classic wines: taut, fresh, bucolic, utterly charming and amazingly long-lived.”

Neal Martin, Wine Advocate

Aged for nearly as long as many Gran Reserva Riojas at a fraction of the price, the remarkable 93 pt. 2015 Lopez de Heredia Vina Cubillo Tinto Crianza is without a doubt one of the region's top values in classically styled Rioja, its fresh, bright red fruit balanced by juicy, tantalizing acidity and finishing long with smooth tannins, crafted by the historic estate described as the “Rioja standard-bearer” by the Wine Spectator’s Gillian Sciaretta and over delivering in a big way for fans and collectors of age worthy Spanish reds.

Accessed through a labyrinth of vaulted underground corridors and staircases, visitors to the massive cobweb-laced cellars of Lopez de Heredia find themselves in a setting reminiscent of a Hitchcock film, but make no mistake - these damp, moldy cellars are the present day ground zero for the region's most classically styled and meticulously aged Riojas and essential to Lopez de Heredia’s iconic wine making legacy. Stretched over the length of two football fields below their bodega in Haro’s famed Barrio de la Estacion, the Lopez de Heredia cellars boast over 13,000 225-liter American oak barrels of varied ages, the winery continuously family owned and operated since 1877 and now run by fourth generation Maria Jose Lopez de Heredia and her sister Mercedes. Described as “the most traditional among Rioja traditionalists” by the Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez, Lopez de Heredia sources its wines from estate vineyards spanning over 124 hectares, crafting the 2015 Vina Cubillo from a blend of mostly Tempranillo with Garnacha grown in a mix of alluvial clay and limestone in the estate’s sustainably farmed Vina Cubillo vineyard located a few kilometers from the winery at over 400 meters above sea level. Fermented spontaneously in a mix of neutral wooden casks some dating back over a century, the fresh and long-lived 2015 Lopez de Heredia Vina Cubillo Tinto Crianza was aged for 3 years in well-seasoned American oak barrels then transferred to larger neutral casks before further extended aging in bottle, released only when ready to enjoy and displaying exceptional “depth and capacity to please” according to Decanter’s Simon Field.

Summing up its rich potential to continue to evolve, critic Neal Martin declared, "a bottle of Lopez de Heredia is an individual and each time you meet, you may see a different side to its personality," the deliciously satisfying 93 pt. 2015 Lopez de Heredia Vina Cubillo Tinto Crianza an elegant, classically styled Rioja with underlying intensity that promises a fabulous ride for Rioja lovers seeking a bargain priced red to reach for again and again.

The 2015 Viña Cubillo Tinto Crianza reflects the warmer conditions of the year, and with the riper fruit they picked to produce this wine, they still managed to keep around 13.5% alcohol. 2021 Bethel Heights Pinot Noir Estate (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Willamette, Oregon
B-21 Top Recommendation

A rich and age worthy Sangiovese blend from on outstanding vintage, the elegant aromatic 95 pt. 2018 Carpineto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva offers bright, earthy fruit balanced by juicy acidity and smooth, refined tannins, a top scoring red from the lesser-known Tuscany region producing “lively, refreshing, engaging wines” according to the Wine Independent’s Susan Hulme that rivals the reds of neighboring Tuscan regions at a fraction of the cost.

Spanning over 500 hectares of land, Giovanni Carlo Sacchet and Antonio Mario Zaccheo founded Carpineto in Chianti Classico in 1967, expanding their portfolio to produce Vino Nobile from vineyards southeast of the hilltop town of Montepulciano in the late 1990’s. With a history dating back over five centuries in Tuscany and among the first regions in Italy approved for DOCG status in 1980, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano has experienced a steady rise in quality over the last decade, crafting polished, terroir-driven Sangiovese “of real character that also offer tremendous quality for the money” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinou from the lesser-known Tuscany region “that should be on everyone’s radar” according to the Wine Enthusiast’s Kerin O’Keefe, s. Set in the rolling hills at around 250 meters above sea level, Carpineto’s sustainably farmed 84.5 hectares of vineyards are planted mainly to Sangiovese in a mix of sand and “tufa” clay soil, surrounded by a biodiverse area that includes a small natural lake and a 12-hectare olive grove. Blending mostly Sangiovese with the indigenous Canaiolo, winemaker Caterina Sacchet aged the opulent 2018 Carpineto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva in a mix of used Slavonian and French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months before bottling, extending the aging for an additional year beyond the minimal three year requirement for a Riserva and yielding a beautifully balanced Sangiovese with lively acidity and “enough tannins to age another decade or longer” according to the Wine Spectator’s Bruce Sanderson.

From the Haut Medoc estate known among savvy Bordeaux insiders for over delivering value, these 93 pt. Chateau Lanessan selections from top vintages are a welcome breath of fresh air for Bordeaux traditionalists seeking a great deal, offering layers of dark, savory fruit already drinking well with polished tannins worthy of laying down and now available in original wooden cases at best on the market pricing while they last.

Located just south of St. Julien near famed Second Growth Gruaud Larose, Chateau Lanessan boasts a history dating to the 14th century, its Grand Vin’s steadily rising quality over the last decade due in large part to lower yields and stricter selection implemented by esteemed consulting winemaker Eric Boissenot. Sourced from 32 hectares of 30-year-old vines planted above the Garonne in gravel hills up to 25 meters deep, Chateau Lanessan is aged in a combination of 33% new French oak barrels, 33% one year old and 33% two year old for an average of 12 months, yielding earthy dark fruit and powerful tannic structure that evolves beautifully over time, garnering a reputation among Bordeaux purists as a harmonious, classically styled blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with an impressive ability to age. Described as a “charmer” by the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley, the 93 pt. 2015 Chateau Lanessan is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 7% Petit Verdot and 7% Cab Franc boasting “a firm grainy texture and great freshness” according to the Wine Independent’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown and “finishing with a skip in its step.” A blend of 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot, the 93 pt. 2018 Chateau Lanessan is “all class” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous offering “tons of immediacy and pure appeal” and called “a pretty serious take on the vintage” by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson that promises to age well. Boasting “rich, powdery tannins and a vibrant core of fruit” according to the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley, the 93 pt. 2019 Chateau Lanessan is a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon with 36% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot, summed up by Kelley as a “fine effort” promising to age over two decades.

Described as producing “some of the best value wines on the Medoc peninsula” by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson, these 93 pt. vintages from Chateau Lanessan are bargain priced for Bordeaux lovers looking to pull the cork more often and a terrific opportunity to start a collection of age worthy Bordeaux without breaking the bank.

2022 Clos Henri Otira Glacial Stones Sauvignon Blanc (750ml)
Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough, New Zealand
B-21 Top Recommendation

Described as a “wine of pure class” by the Wine Advocate’s Erin Larkin, the enticing 96 pt. 2022 Clos Henri Otira Glacial Stones Sauvignon Blanc offers ripe, juicy stone fruit and citrusy grapefruit flavors with lively, mineral-tinged acidity on a richly textured finish, a pure, vineyard-driven New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc crafted with the expertise of one of Sancerre’s most esteemed estates to transparently express Marlborough’s unique glacial terroir priced for Sauv Blanc aficionados to stock the cooler.

With a family history as growers in the Loire Valley spanning ten generations, Domaine Henri Bourgeois has been producing terroir-driven expressions of Sauvignon Blanc in the heart of the Sancerre region for over 70 years, expanding its reach south to New Zealand and now ranked among Marlborough's top Sauv Blanc producers. After a twelve year worldwide search for land similar to their property in Sancerre, the family purchased 98 hectares of pastureland nestled in the southern foothills of the South Island's Wairau Valley, attracted by the region’s optimal combination of soil and climate for growing Sauvignon Blanc and establishing Clos Henri in 2000. Implementing organic and biodynamic viticulture in their new endeavor, the 100 hectares of vineyards lie at the convergence of two distinct geological ages split by the Wairau fault line, boasting distinctive glacial soils and enjoying long, dry growing seasons with cool nighttime temperatures. Now over 20 years old, the vines for the 2022 Clos Henri Otira Glacial Stones Sauvignon Blanc were planted in an abundance of ancient river stones deposited during the Otiran glacial period, the well-draining rocky soils and sunny, dry climate yielding elegant, balanced wines with mineral-driven acidity. Fermented with indigenous yeasts, French born winemaker Damien Yvon aged the elegant 2022 Clos Henri Otira Glacial Stones Sauvignon Blanc on the lees for 8 months in a mix of stainless steel, older French oak barrels and Austrian casks with six months longer in tank and barrel before bottling, yielding a core of intense fruit flavors elegantly balanced by fresh acidity and stony minerality on a lengthy, mouthwatering finish, summed up by the Wine Advocate’s Erin Larkin as “sensational.”

One of the estate’s new single-vineyard bottlings showing “a layer of complexity above your everyday Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc” according to the Wine Enthusiast’s Christina Packard, the rich and refined 96 pt. 2022 Clos Henri Otira Glacial Stones Sauvignon Blanc is one of the top rated Sauv Blancs from the 2022 harvest, a masterful expression of Marlborough terroir boasting Sancerre-like elegance and depth that will have Sauvignon Blanc lovers reaching for another pour.

This is real sauvignon blanc with sliced lemons, dried mango and hints of white pineapple with some stone. It’s full and layered with a density and presence on the palate. Long and flavorful. Phenols hold it together. One of the best NZ sauvignons out there. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

96 points, James Suckling (Nov 2023)

The 2022 Otira Glacial Stones Sauvignon Blanc leads with a nose rich in minerals and geology; it is inescapable. River stones, wet limestone and beach sand are found alongside green apple skins, yuzu, saltbush, preserved citrus and brine. This wine is sensational, truly. It is layered, both in terms of flavor and texture, long, satisfying and svelte. Ripping wine. I highly recommend this wine of pure class.

2018 Marina Cvetic Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva San Martino Rosso (750ml)
Montepulciano from Abruzzo, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Described by Antonio Galloni of Vinous as “a reference point producer for rich, internationally styled wines from Abruzzo,” the 94 pt. 2018 Marina Cvetic Riserva San Martino boasts rich, fragrant dark fruit hinting of forest and spice balanced by bright acidity and elegant silky tannins, a lush and delicious expression of Montepulciano grown in the high-altitude terroir above Italy’s Adriatic Coast that delivers outstanding value.

Driven by his vision to transform Abruzzo into a world class wine region, founder Gianni Masciarelli set out to change the reputation and quality of Italy’s second most planted grape from the ground up, introducing the Guyot method of vine training to reduce yields, employing sustainable farming practices and purchasing only optimal vineyard parcels across the region to produce his wines. Making “irrefutable” contributions to Abruzzo’s winemaking according to critic Antonio Galloni including aging in barrels in lieu of concrete, Gianni began with two hectares of his grandfather’s vineyards in 1991 and expanded to over 300 hectares over the next decades, his well-crafted Abruzzo wines gaining international acclaim that has continued under the direction of his wife, Marina Cvetic, for whom the cuvee was named and now joined by their eldest daughter Miriam Lee. Sourced from eight of the estate’s top parcels, the vineyards for the 2018 Marina Cvetic Riserva are planted in a range of soils from calcareous clay to gravelly rocky at 200 to 400 meters above sea level throughout the four provinces of Abruzzo, enjoying a unique microclimate on Abruzzo’s narrow strip of rugged terrain between the Apennine Mountains and the Adriatic Sea with cooling breezes that moderate temperatures and prevent disease. Fermented in stainless steel to preserve freshness, winemaker Attilio Alfino aged the 2018 Marina Cvetic Riserva San Martino Rosso in French oak barriques for 12 months and another 12 months in bottle before release, creating a dark fruited, opulently textured Montepulciano that’s “silky smooth and juicy in style” according to Eric Guido of Vinous with an “incredibly long, yet remarkably fresh” finish, summing it up as a “fully enjoyable expression of Montepulciano.”

Described as successfully building “on Gianni Mascarelli’s blueprint” by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, the 94 pt. 2018 Marina Cvetic Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva San Martino Rosso reveals richly concentrated Montepulciano fruit expressing the complexity of its diverse terroir, a superb deal from the lesser heralded Abruzzo region described as “one of Italy’s best kept secrets” by Decanter’s Andrea Briccarello that translates to a great deal on a delicious everyday Italian wine.

Complex aromas of crushed black fruit, dried lemon peel, kalonji seeds and more if you linger. Full-bodied palate, where the intense fruit coats the medium-grain tannins on the center-palate and continues to push through the wall as the tannins firm up towards the end. The finish is already long and fruity and will only lengthen as the wine matures in bottle. Super quality here. Try from 2024.

94 points, James Suckling (Nov 2021)

The 2018 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva S. Martino Rosso Marina Cvetic is super rich and concentrated but also incredibly smooth and ironed out in terms of texture. The wine does taper down considerably on the palate, offering soft tannins and more reasonable human-sized black fruit concentration. The Masciarelli family does a top-notch job following the winemaking vision of the late and great Gianni Masciarelli.

92 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jun 2023)

Aromas of brandy-soaked dark cherry, anise, allspice and chopped mint show depth, concentration and purity in this Montepulciano that sees time in French oak. It's rich in feel on the palate, but counterbalanced by a bright core of acidity that pushes along the dense berry and spice flavors. There's a polish to it all that makes it accessible in the near term, but it would also hold well through 2028.

2021 Raventos i Blanc Blanc de Blancs (750ml)
Xarel-lo from Catalonia, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

For over an astonishing 500 years, the Raventos family has been involved with winemaking in the Catalonia region, growing grapes on their historic family-owned estate west of Barcelona since 1497. Inspired by his belief that the fossilized marine limestone soils in the windswept Anoia River Valley would yield a complex sparkling wine, Josep Raventos Fatjo was the first to apply the traditional method used to make Champagne to classic Penedes grape varietals in the late 1800s, his son Manuel later pioneering the blend of the three indigenous grapes, Xarel.lo, Macabeu, and Parellada, that would become the standard for Cava. Witnessing the decline in the quality and reputation of Cava over the next century, the Raventos family separated itself in the 1980s from the Codorniu winery it had founded to focus on making vineyard-driven sparkling wines from their 90-hectare estate, officially withdrawing from the Cava classification in 2012 and championing the creation of a new D.O. with higher standards in the Conca del Riu Anoia area. Crafting the blend of native grapes from biodynamically farmed vines averaging 40 years of age, 21st generation winemaker Pepe Raventos vinified each varietal in stainless steel tanks before blending and bottling it for the secondary fermentation, then aged the 2021 Raventos i Blanc Blanc de Blancs on the lees for a minimum of 18 months, twice the requirement for Cava, yielding fresh, layered fruit with tantalizing minerality balanced by mouthwatering acidity on a creamy mousse.

Described as “one of Spain’s finest and most complex sparkling wines” by Vinous critic Josh Raynolds, declaring it “one of the greatest bubbly values in the world,” the elegant 90 pt. 2021 Raventos i Blanc Blanc de Blancs is a uniquely Spanish sparkler reflecting its mineral-rich terroir, impeccably crafted in the Champagne style and certain to appeal to lovers of the world’s finest sparkling wines looking for a fantastic value.

Fresh and focused, with a lacy texture, this is a minerally version overall, showing hints of smoke and stone on the nose, plus a salty underpinning to the palate's range of tangerine, ripe yellow plum, blanched almond and chamomile. Xarel-lo, Macabeu, Parellada and Malvasia de Sitges. Disgorged March 2023. Drink now through 2026. 16,600 cases made, 9,000 cases imported.

2011 Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva (750ml)

“Powerful, with the finesse of Tondonia”

Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate

Declared “the poster child for traditional Rioja winemaking” by Vinous critic Josh Raynolds, Rioja lovers and collectors know Lopez de Heredia as one of the region’s top producers of age worthy Rioja, the powerful 95 pt. 2011 Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva offering dark, ripe spiced fruit and muscular, well integrated tannins released ready to enjoy over the next decade or more, reaffirming the Bodega's reign as the top producer of traditionally styled Rioja and incredibly priced to over deliver value.

Located in the town of Haro in a region defined by its historic estates, the tradition-bound Lopez de Heredia has remained relatively unchanged for the nearly 150 years since its founding, releasing their Riojas only when deemed ready after a decade or longer of aging in their legendary vaulted cellars. Accessed through a labyrinth of underground corridors and staircases, some dating back over a century, the massive mold and cobweb-laced cellars of Lopez de Heredia stretch over the length of two football fields, home to well-aged oak vats ranging from 60 up to 640 hectoliters (nearly 17,000 gallons) that are the "secret sauce" of their wines. Pioneering the single vineyard wine in the region, the traditions of Lopez de Heredia are continued by fourth generation Maria Jose Lopez de Heredia, the estate manager described as “a force of nature” by the Wine Spectator’s Gillian Sciaretta, and her sister Mercedes who leads the winemaking. A rarity in Rioja, Lopez de Heredia uses only estate bottled fruit from their own vineyards, sourcing the 2011 Vina Tondonia Reserva from the spectacular 100 plus hectare vineyard of the same name, situated in a shell-like depression next to the river Ebro along the border of Rioja Alavesa and planted with Tempranillo vines averaging over 40 years of age with some over 100 years. After co-fermenting the blend of mostly Tempranillo with Garnacha and small amounts of Graciano and Mazuelo, the robust 2011 Tondonia Reserva was aged for six years in custom crafted American oak barrels, half of which were seasoned for over 10 years, exerting a nuanced, integrated influence of oak before being bottled unfiltered and undergoing the extended aging that is key to their signature style, enhancing aromas and smoothing tannins.

Described as “one of Rioja’s most proudly traditional wines” by critic Tim Atkin and epitomizing “timeless, artisan winemaking” according to Vinous critic Neal Martin, Rioja lovers and collectors of age worthy Spanish reds know to stock up on the classically styled 95 pt. 2011 Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva and enjoy this expertly crafted Rioja over the next decade and beyond, a worthy testament to the timeless practices of this renowned estate and an equally impressive value.

95JS 94WA

A traditional beauty that effuses iron, warm earth and savory tobacco leaves, together with plums, spices and orange zest. This is juicy and still tight, with firm but savory tannins. Medium-weight and quite zesty in texture, as is the case with the other López de Heredia reds tasted this session. Drink now or hold.

95 points, James Suckling (Sep 2022)

The 2011 Viña Tondonia Reserva is darker and shows riper fruit, a rounder palate and some dusty tannins. A year of ripeness, concentration and tannin, the wine is powerful with the finesse of Tondonia. Tasting this next to the textbook 2010 Tondonia revealed how this has more muscle and a wider back and the 2010 epitomizes the finesse and elegance. 270,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2019.

“Gorgeous and formidable”

Eric Guido, Vinous

Crafted under “one of Burgundy's most respected and forward-thinking vintners” according to the Wine Spectator’s Bruce Sanderson, the elegant 94 pt. 2021 Lingua Franca Avni Pinot Noir offers richly aromatic wild berry fruit with earthy undertones on a long, silky mineral finish, displaying “the power and complexity possible to obtain in Oregon” according to Eric Guido of Vinous from a top Burgundy winemaker and an outstanding value for fans of classically styled Oregon Pinot.

Renowned for crafting top scoring Burgundy for his family’s Cote de Beaune estate, master winemaker Dominique Lafon worked as a consultant to Oregon’s Evening Land Vineyards before collaborating with former sommelier and Evening Land general manager Larry Stone to co-found Lingua Franca in the Willamette Valley’s Eola-Amity Hills 2015, his expertise at crafting exceptional Burgundy credited with driving Evening Land’s rising reputation early on. Purchasing the 140-acre Janzen Farm, a prime parcel situated next to Evening Land’s Seven Springs site and adjacent to Domaine Serene’s Jerusalem Hill Vineyard, Stone and consulting winemaker Lafon worked with renowned Willamette viticulturist Mimi Casteel to determine the precise mix of clones planted based on the site’s varied soils, utilizing organic and biodynamic viticulture throughout the estate’s 66 acre vineyard and hiring Evening Land’s former assistant winemaker and Lafon protege Thomas Savre to craft its vineyard-driven wines. Boasting experience at legendary Burgundy estates including Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Domaine Dujac, and Maison Nicolas Potel, winemaker Savre employs a transparent, minimal intervention approach in the cellar, aging the 2021 Lingua Franca Avni Pinot Noir in a combination of new and mostly used French oak barriques for 12 months with 4 months longer in tank before bottling and yielding fresh, vibrant fruit with beautiful richness and lively acidity, adding to the estate’s “string of fantastic vintages” according to Vinous critic Eric Guido

Sourced from “a five-star vintage for the Willamette Valley” according to Decanter’s Clive Pursehouse, the impressive 94 pt. 2021 Lingua Franca Avni Pinot Noir offers the appealing lush fruit flavors and layered complexity of classically styled California Pinots and red Burgundy wines at a fraction of the price, “a textbook example of the wines of the Willamette Valley” according to Jeb Dunnuck’s Audrey Frick delivering terrific value for Oregon Pinot fans to enjoy over the next decade.

Restrained on the nose, with a brooding, savoury character on the palate. Initially a bit more subdued than the 'straight' Chablis Sainte Claire, this has the potential for future development given the concentration on show; certainly pushing premier cru quality, if not even higher. The Avril family, their renowned parcels planted adjacent to the ruins of the old papal towers in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, have been consistently bottling brilliant wines for decades. Among my very favorites – my personal collection spans multiple vintages – these are wines of unmistakable breed and character; a complete joy to experience. Originally established in the 18th century, their primary parcel is augmented by seventeen old vine plots throughout the appellation, adding further dimension to a wine already at the very highest levels of quality. Over the last few vintages, my notes indicate ever improved character. Paul-Vincent has bottled even more in a long line of rock stars. Draconian selections followed daily passes through each of his parcels, painstakingly clipping each vine for nothing but the very finest berries.

98D 97WS

"A very Clos des Papes vintage," says Vincent Avril, and I know what he means - a vintage that naturally delivers the kind of fresh, elegant wines that this estate is famous for. A tasting of several foudres point to a wine with natural, easy balance. The Mourvèdre is excellent here this year, and adds great depth to the fresh and delightful Grenache that has notes of black tea, black cherry and iron. Elegant and very fine.

Beguiling, with a plume of black tea and incense leading off, followed by warmed black cherry reduction, cassis, melted black licorice, warm earth and singed tobacco and garrigue accents.
