The delivery was a day late; more the fault of the shipping company, I’m sure. Being on schedule is important for alcohol, because it can only be delivered to the person named on the order, and has to be signed for. How about having to reschedule your work day because of a late delivery. Apart from that, I’m very happy with this retailer ‑ they have what I need, and very reasonably priced.

2021 Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma, California
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Deliciously approachable with a reputation for delivering “serious bang for the buck” according to Jeb Dunnuck, the powerful 94 pt. 2021 Beringer Knights Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a terrific vintage for this B-21 favorite, an easy to enjoy California Cab revealing fresh, savory fruit with velvety smooth tannins, crafted exclusively from Beringer’s estate vineyards at an unbeatable price.

Celebrating over 40 years as an AVA, Knights Valley is situated between Healdsburg and Calistoga in a narrow valley at the foot of Mount St. Helena bordering the Mayacamas mountain range that divides Sonoma and Napa Counties, its vineyards known for producing powerfully elegant Cabernet Sauvignon and home to some of the region's most sought after cult Cab producers including Peter Michael Winery. Recognizing its potential for growing exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon, Beringer was among the first wineries post-prohibition to farm grapes in Knights Valley over a half century ago, releasing its inaugural Knights Valley-designated wine in 1974 nearly a decade before the region was made an official AVA and crafting the first Knights Valley Cabernet in 1976. Spanning 600 acres northwest of the winery, Beringer’s sustainably farmed Knights Valley vineyard is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of other Bordeaux varietals in well-draining, rocky alluvial soils, enjoying the warmest daytime temperatures in Sonoma with cool evenings that preserve the grapes’ acidity. Crafted as a Bordeaux-style blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Petit Verdot, winemaker Ryan Rech aged the robust 2021 Beringer Knights Valley Cab for 15 months in 33% new French oak, yielding fresh, juicy fruit boasting signature Knights Valley notes of wild sage, mocha and black olive with ripe tannins built to age and an enticing smooth, velvety finish that begs for another sip.

Described as a “potent, bold Knights Valley Cabernet” offering “tons of immediacy and appeal” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the richly satisfying 94 pt. 2021 Beringer Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley is an undervalued gem among its pricey Knights Valley peers, a smooth and satisfying Cab with a backbone for aging affordably priced to enjoy without hesitation.

A mix of red and black fruits with lavender and fresh herbs followed by vanilla, blanched almonds and a hint of black ink and pencil lead. Full-bodied, firm and juicy tannins with good acidity backbone. Sound and harmonious wine with beautiful drinkability. Terrific quality. This needs two or three years to take the edge off it.

2015 Xavier Vignon Arcane XIX Le Soleil (750ml)
Grenache from Côtes du Rhône, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Regular readers of these pages are no stranger to the stunning wines being produced by Xavier Vignon, who has established a flawless reputation working with such luminaries as Marcoux, Grand Veneur, Raymond Usseglio, and others. Through these relationships, he has gained access to incredibly pristine parcels of very old-vine plantings across the valley, where he works with centenarian vines of Grenache and Syrah as well as 75- to 85-year-old plots of multiple other varieties.

As always, we've sourced this latest set directly from Vignon's cellars, so fans of the estate can stock up on any or all of these critically acclaimed favorites for under $25 each. Led by a pair of "sensational" 2015s that each notched 94 points fromWine Advocate, these carry on Vignon's track record as one of the great iconoclastic talents in the Rhone today. The NV Arcane bottlings are no less impressive or singular.

94WA 94RAS 93JD

The 2015 Cotes du Rhone Villages Arcane XVIII Le Soleil is youthfully dark in color and fruit-forward, but it also shows softening, silky tannins. It's full bodied but not overblown, with a sensationally seductive mouthfeel. Black cherries define the fruit, joined by hints of dark chocolate and enough garrigue to give it a seriously savory character despite the fruit. This is an old-vine blend of 80% Grenache with 10% each Syrah and Mourvèdre, aged 15 months in one-third new oak, the rest in concrete or foudre. Maybe the best Côte du Rhône Villages I've ever tasted, it looks to have the stuffing to go another 10 years.

94 points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (Issue # 233 - Oct 2017)

Coming from 100-year-old Grenache vines (there’s 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre in the blend) mostly in the northern part of the Southern Rhône, the 2015 Côtes du Rhône Villages Arcane le Soleil saw 15 months in one-third each of new barrels, concrete tanks, and stainless-steel tanks. This inky colored beauty offers a terrific perfume of blueberries, scorched earth, graphite, and crushed violets. Deep, full-bodied, incredibly pure, and elegant, with silky tannin, it’s a sensational Côtes du Rhône that’s better than most Chateauneuf du Pape in the vintage. It will be better in another year or two and keep for 8-10 years.

2020 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 (750ml)
Shiraz from South Australia, Australia
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Known by fans of Australian Shiraz for its muscular, boldly structured wines, Penfolds’ 94+ pt. 2020 Shiraz Bin 28 delivers rich, ripe generous dark fruit and velvety, plush tannins, sourced from a blend of multi-regional and multi-vineyard fruit in the same manner as the flagship Grange and crafted in the same “distinctly powerful style” according to Vinous critic Josh Raynolds at an affordable price.

Dating back to 1884, Penfolds' founders Dr. Christopher Penfold and his wife Mary were among the first to establish vineyards in Adelaide, planting vine cuttings they brought from France and England near the village of Magill around a stone cottage they called The Grange, originally crafting the wine as a "tonic" for the doctor’s patients. Expanding into the next century as a leader in the Australian wine industry, Penfolds' pioneering winemaker Max Schubert crafted the initial release of Bin 28 in 1959, named for the Bin or “Batch Identification Number” referring to its storage area in Penfolds' cellars and sourced from the historic Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard. Now blending Shiraz from four diverse regions with nearly half still coming from the Barossa Valley, winemaker Matt Woo aged the 2020 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 for 12 months in 16% new American oak casks, yielding lush floral and spice aromas with layers of earthy dark fruit and well-integrated tannins promising longevity

Exhibiting Penfolds' “remarkable mix of character, consistency and value” according to the Wine Spectator’s Harvey Steiman, the powerfully built 94+ pt. 2020 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 showcases this iconic producer's famously rich and robust style, certain to please Aussie Shiraz fans and delivering outstanding value.

The Barossa has the ability to convey a sense of place, dirt and air in the glass. The trick is to not get in the way—a cooper does not terroir make. Despite not being the dominant region in this blend (for specificity: McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Clare Valley), the Barossa makes a potent contribution. Here, in the 2020 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz, the concentrated, dry and warm vintage is on show and provides a splay of earthy, dense fruit, stretched over a framework of savory tannin. Despite Penfolds's reputation for big tannins/big oak, the fruit here overpowers both and streams out over the long finish. The heart of Barossa is here. Very good. Will get better.

94+ points, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate (Jul 2022)

Ripe and generous, but the aromatics take this to the next level, with notes of cardamom, paprika and dried rose petal, plus touches of candied violet and cocoa powder, to complement the core of fleshy blackberry, black cherry and cassis. The tannins are dense but velvety, and this finishes with warm chocolaty notes. Drink now through 2035. 9,287 cases imported.

94 points, MaryAnn Worobiec, Wine Spectator (Dec 2022)

Sourced from vineyards in McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Clare Valley. Matured for 12 months in American hogsheads (16% new). Penfolds' team of winemakers have come up with an improbably fluid wine that has entirely unexpected elements of grace. All the components of fruit, oak, tannins and acidity – the last particularly important – are in synergistic union. No blowing of trumpets here.

94 points, James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion (Aug 2022)

A homage to warmer-region, South Australian shiraz, this has a rich and smooth delivery of ripe blackberries and red-to-dark plums on the nose. The wine has taken its 12 months in American oak (16% new) well and truly in its stride. Plush and suave mouth-feel here, this is effortless and a style that sits right in the Penfolds sweet spot. A blend of McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Clare Valley. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

93 points, James Suckling (Oct 2022)

Opaque ruby. Oak-spiced cherry, blackberry and mocha aromas, along with coconut, licorice and cracked pepper accents. Deep and weighty on the palate, offering intense black and blue fruit, mocha and oak spice flavors that show an appealing sweetness but are slow to open. In a distinctly powerful style, delivering youthfully chewy tannins and a long, chewy finish that echoes the licorice and dark berry notes.

There are two slightly eccentric wines from this estate that merit serious attention. Almost 100% Mourvèdre from a parcel close to Vinsobres, the sensational 2015 Vin de France Arcane XV Le Diable had a three-week maceration (Xavier prefers to get as much extraction as possible before alcoholic fermentation), and was aged mostly in small oak tanks and concrete. Blueberries, blackberries, peppery herbs and spice all flow from this layered, full-bodied beauty that has awesome purity, integrated acidity and plenty of structure. Give bottles 2-3 years and drink over the following 10-15 years.

2017 La Rioja Alta Reserva Vina Ardanza (750ml)
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Described as “a wine that embodies the long history of Rioja” by Joaquin Hidalgo of Vinous, the 95-point 2017 La Rioja Alta Reserva Vina Ardanza hits the mark as one of the region’s finest classically styled reds, offering fragrant, juicy dark fruit impeccably balanced by refined, polished tannins on a lingering finish. Named one of the Top 100 Wines of Spain in 2023 by James Suckling, it's an alluring Rioja ready to enjoy over the next decade at an unbeatable price.

La Rioja Alta is renowned for releasing its wines late with extended aging, its massive cellars filled with “the equivalent of eight years in stock” according to Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez. Produced only in top vintages, the 2017 Reserva Vina Ardanza came from vines over 30 years of age in the Rioja Alta sub-region, along with Garnacha from the hotter and drier 40-hectare La Pedriza vineyard, a Rioja Oriental parcel considered prime terroir for optimal ripening. Employing traditional techniques including manual racking by candlelight and fermenting with indigenous yeasts, the refined 2017 Reserva Vina Ardanza aged separately in a mix of 20% new and three-year-old American oak barrels for up to three years, with the final blend spending three more years in bottle before release, yielding “a vibrant red wine with harmonious balance” according to Vinous' Joaquin Hidalgo.

Critic Tim Atkin calls the elegant, 95-point 2017 La Rioja Alta Reserva Vina Ardanza “a delicious release” reflecting the iconic estate’s reputation “for producing wines that are good to drink on release, but also age beautifully in bottle.” It's a winning combination for Rioja lovers of all stripes.

95JS 94WA 93V

A more vibrant and fruitier expression of Ardanza this year with strawberries, mussels, warm spices and berries. Round and silky on the palate with lovely spices and a long, nicely saline finish. A nice touch of creaminess works really well here and further extends the finish. 80% tempranillo and 20% garnacha. Drink or hold.

95 points, Zekun Shuai, James Suckling (Jan 2024)

2017 was not an easy harvest, but it produced some beautiful and classical wines, like the 2017 Viña Ardanza Reserva, which shows a little more advancement and polish and is ready to drink. It was produced with 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha from their vineyard La Pedriza in Tudelilla. It fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in American oak barrels, 36 months for the Tempranillo and 30 for the Garnacha (that was harvested 15 days later), with six rackings. It's ripe and aromatic, tertiary, with 14.5% alcohol and mellow acidity, a medium-bodied palate and sleek tannins. It has a pungent note of clove and pepper, some licorice and ink and the cherries in liqueur from the Garnacha. An updated classical Ardanza. 600,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2021.

94 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Feb 2024)

Viña Ardanza is a wine that embodies the long history of Rioja. The 2017 Gran Reserva Viña Ardanza is a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Garnacha sourced from Rioja Alta and Oriental. Aged for up to 36 months in American oak, it presents a ripe profile with aromas of black fruit, earth and balsamic, complemented by cedar and vanilla. On the palate, it is dry and rich, with a juicy texture and fine, polished tannins that culminate in a bold and lingering finish. This is a vibrant red wine with harmonious balance.

Sonoma's standard-bearer Ferrari-Carano needs little introduction. These quintessential California classics have been all-time best sellers at B-21 for years, and it's always nice to see a standard bearer continue to hit the mark. These 2021s and 2022s showcase winemaking duo Rebecka Deike and Natalie West at their best, all notching solid press from James Suckling and offering outstanding value and consistent excellence. The "Ripe yet elegantly balanced and refreshing" 2023 Chardonnay is a top-shelf value performer at 91 points & under $16, a perfect option for your next go-to house white. A step (or two) up at 94 points, the 2022 Tre Terre is "full bodied with lovely texture and tension" per Suckling, outpacing it's sub-$25 price. For the reds, the 2021 Siena hits on all cylinders for fans of this QPR best seller, while the 2021 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon catches 92 points from Suckling, who notes, "Medium-bodied with fine tannins and beautiful length. Bright and vivid. Plenty of cabernet character." If you're looking for surefire quality at an easy price, you almost have too many good options with these Sonoma classics.

2021 Felsina Chianti Classico Berardenga (750ml)
Sangiovese from Chianti, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"[Fèlsina's] 2021s are fabulous wines that capture all the best the vintage has to offer. The wines are incredibly distinctive, archetypes of Castelnuovo Berardenga, the sort of wines that will delight readers who enjoy Chianti Classico in all its guises." - Antonio Galloni,Vinous

The iconic Fèlsina estate has been setting the bar for decades in the Castelnuovo Berardenga sub-zone of the Chianti Classico DOCG, and in a reference-point vintage like 2021, they have hit bullseye after bullseye. The 2021 Berardenga Riserva is quite possibly the star of the show, garnering an eye-opening press across the board led by a pair of 95 point reviews fromWine Spectatorand Italian wine authority Kerin O'Keefe, who found it "elegant and showing wonderful intensity." James Suckling calls the 2021 "a well-composed, balanced and refined riserva," while Antonio Galloni declares, "A wine of nuance and layers, the 2021 has so much to offer."

While the Riserva still needs time to show its full hand, the 2021 Chianti Classico Berardenga is perfectly poised to be your next go-to red, with pedigree and class that transcend its everyday, sub-$20 price point. A 92-point value star according to Galloni, "It's a super classic example of the house style and a wine readers should consider buying by the case." Need we say more?

Finally, with all the hype surrounding 2021, savvy Italian fans can find some truly superb buys in the 2020 vintage as well, not least of which is the 2020 Fontalloro Toscana. With same universal praise as the rest of Fèlsina's line, led by 96 points fromWine Advocate's Monica Larner, the 2020 is "a vibrant red ...On the elegant side, despite its youthful power, with excellent harmony" according toWine Spectator.

This set from Fèlsina is the classic Tuscan trifecta – a surefire value winner, a sharp collectible buy of world-class pedigree, and a stunning QPR overachiever that can be enjoyed today or hold its own in the cellar for years to come. In short, everything that makes Fèlsina such a treasured estate is on full display in today's offer.

93JS 92V 91WA 91WS 91D

A firm and silky red with cherry, dried flower and orange peel aromas and flavors. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and a fresh and focused finish. Needs a little time to soften but I already enjoy the energy here. Drink or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (Aug 2023)

The 2021 Chianti Classico Berardenga is boisterous and expressive right out of the glass. Dark fruit, earthiness, leather, spice and tobacco convey tons of Castelnuovo Berardenga character. The 2021 keeps getting better in the glass. It's a super-classic example of the house style and a wine readers should consider buying by the case. The Berardenga bottling can be a bit wild, but in 2021 has an added touch of sophistication that is undeniable.

92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Aug 2023)

The Fèlsina 2021 Chianti Classico Berardenga has a spicy or crunchy side that I often find with Sangiovese. There is a lot of fruit brightness here with cassis, red cherry, mineral, dried tobacco and grilled rosemary. This is an easy-drinking Tuscan red with the natural acidity and brightness to pair with a classic lasagna or eggplant parmigiana.

91 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (May 2023)

This has a saline undercurrent to the cherry, cinnamon, rose hip, earth and Tuscan scrub flavors, all backed by a solid base of tannins and vibrant acidity. Long, energetic finish. Best from 2024 through 2030. 22,500 cases made, 8,000 cases imported.

91 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Oct 2023)

In the southeastern confines of the denomination, the Fèlsina estate has been an unwavering proponent of 100% Sangiovese. Even the annata captures the wildness of this grape combined with the Mediterranean character of this warm and luminous corner of Chianti Classico. The 2021 starts with smoky nuances, earth and subtle oak, then progresses to fragrant mint and thyme. It is concentrated and ripe, yet balanced by freshness and agility. An underlying firmness releases gradually to reveal a savoury finish of sundried tomato.

2019 Xavier Vignon Lirac (750ml)
Grenache from Lirac, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

From a favorite producer of B-21 Southern Rhone fans, this selection of expertly crafted Xavier Vignon cuvees represents some of the region’s top values, a range of terroir expressive blends from a stellar, instinct-driven winemaker unbeatably priced for stocking up by the case.

Described by Jeb Dunnuck as “easily one of the best winemakers in the Southern Rhone,” Xavier Vignon has been well known for decades as a top consulting enologist among the top producers of Chateauneuf du Pape including Marcoux, Raymond Usseglio and La Nerthe, utilizing his insider access to some of the region’s most exceptional parcels to craft his own consistently top-rated CDP’s and Southern Rhone blends since 2007. Described as a “lively and very well-balanced Cotes du Rhone” by James Suckling, the rich and inviting 91 pt. 2020 Xavier Vignon Cotes du Rhone Vieilles Vignes is an exceptional introduction to Xavier’s Rhone reds offering spiced red, jammy fruits with hints of garrigue on a smooth, satisfying finish. Sourced from a lesser known appellation just across the river from Chateauneuf du Pape, the appealing 92 pt. 2019 Xavier Vignon Lirac boasts fresh vibrant dark fruit with hints of peppered spice and flinty graphite on a long-lived finish, a co-fermented blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah aged 70% in concrete and 30% in barrels and boasting a “lip-smacking drinkability factor” according to the Wine Advocate’s Joe Czerwinski. A blend of 95% Grenache and 5% Mourvedre from vines between 80 and 100 years of age, the elegant 93 pt. 2019 Xavier Vignon Gigondas showcases its pure old vine fruit with bright flavors and peppery minerality, described as “finesse-driven and lengthy on the palate” by Jeb Dunnuck who sums it up as “a beautiful wine” promising a decade of longevity.

Describing his winemaking skills as “impeccable,” Jeb Dunnuck notes these pure and terroir-expressive Xavier Vignon selections offer “superb balance and classic Southern Rhone characters,” calling them “a treasure trove for the savvy buyer” and a sure thing for lovers of Southern Rhone wines.

92WA

An 80-20 blend of Grenache and Syrah, Vignon's 2019 Lirac is drawn from multiple parcels with galets roulés over clay soils. Roughly one-third went into oak, while the rest stayed in tank. It may be the most complex of the various Vignon "Signature" offerings, marrying hints of garrigue and licorice with mixed berries and hints of oak. It's medium to full-bodied, silky and forward, with the same lip-smacking drinkability factor that marks all of Vignon's wines on the finish.

Coming from the higher elevation sites, the NV Beaumes de Venise Arcane Etoile is another elegant, finesse-oriented wine from Xavier that has both richness and freshness. A blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre as well as a small amount of Viognier from 2015, 2016, and 2017, it has something profound in its texture and balance. Notes of black raspberries, currants, dried flowers, lavender, and pepper are followed by a beautiful, full-bodied, elegant wine that might just be one of the greatest red wines to come from Beaumes de Venise.

  • Described as “enormously elegant, with tons of St Julien balance” by Jane Anson of Inside Bordeaux, the impressive 96 pt. 2019 Chateau Lagrange St. Julien is “a benchmark for the estate" according to Neal Martin of Vinous, a blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and 2% Petit Verdot crafted with Lagrange’s highest proportion ever of Cabernet Sauvignon. Employing rigorous selection in the vineyard with only a third of the harvest going into the Grand Cru, winemaker Matthieu Bordes and consultant Eric Boissenot aged the 96 pt. 2019 Chateau Lagrange for 21 months in 50% new French oak barrels, yielding “a dark sumptuous wine” with a “super finessed personality” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous and summed up as “a wine for some long-term aging” by the Wine Enthusiast’s Roger Voss.
  • Crafted by the same stellar team as its Super Second sibling Leoville-Barton, the elegant 96 pt. 2019 Chateau Langoa Barton is “a soft, seamless, beautifully textured Saint-Julien” according to Jeb Dunnuck, a blend of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc offering lush concentrated dark fruit over a framework of velvety tannins. Complex nose of blackberries, currants, oyster shells, iodine, gravel, cloves, dried leaves and bark. Medium-bodied with firm, very fine tannins. Layered and serious. Extremely long in the finish. Classic Pauillac. 20% aged in concrete. 80% cabernet sauvignon and 20% merlot. From biodynamically grown grapes. Try after 2026.

96 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

The classed growth, whose vineyard is in the south of Pauillac, is now performing impressively. This release has succulent black fruits that are braced with tannins and a firm, spicy structure. It is a dense wine that will age. Drink from 2026. Organic.

95 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Oct 2022)

The 2019 Haut-Bages Libéral is a gorgeous wine from Claire Lurton, even if it has closed down a bit post-bottling. Deep and translucent in feel, the 2019 gradually reveals hints of crushed red berry fruit, mint, spice, rose petal and orange peel. I especially admire the overall energy and aromatic presence. All the 2019 needs is a few years to fully come together.

94+ points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Haut-Bages-Libéral has turned out superbly, offering up aromas of wild berries, cassis, licorice, rose petals and sweet soil tones, followed by a medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless palate, its powdery structuring tannins hidden in an ample core of lively, succulent fruit. From biodynamically farmed vineyards located on clay-limestone and gravel soils to the north of Château Latour (as well as a parcel of gravel sandwiched between Pichon-Baron and Lynch-Bages), this is a terrific effort from an estate that deserves to be much better known.

NV Agrapart Terroirs Blanc de Blancs Extra Brut Grand Cru (750ml)
Sparkling from Avize, Champagne, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Crafted by artisan producer and B-21 favorite Pascal Agrapart in the chalky Cote des Blancs, Champagne Agrapart has enjoyed an under the radar reputation, but with the release of these highly rated 2023 cuvees, that’s about to change. From one of the top grower-producers in the region, these selections from Agrapart offer a rare taste of meticulously crafted, terroir-driven Champagne at a remarkable value that's bound to sell out in a flash.

Now run by the fourth consecutive generation, Agrapart ranks at the top echelons of Champagne, earning a 3-star rating in the Revue de Vin du France alongside only 7 other houses, including Krug. Planted almost entirely with Chardonnay with a few small plots of Pinot Noir, the ten-hectare Agrapart Domaine comprises more than 70 small parcels predominantly in the Grand Cru villages of Avize, Cramant, Oiry, and Oger with a few Premier Cru plots on the Cote de Blancs, boasting low yielding vines averaging over 40 years of age with the oldest over 70 years. Taking the reins of his family’s historic estate in Avize over four decades ago, Pascal works the soils manually while employing organic practices, tilling with horses to ensure his soils do not get compacted (one of his parcels is worked by and named for his horse Venus). Fermenting the base wines exclusively with native yeasts which he believes is critical to expressing the terroir, Pascal employs a mix of older barrels dependent on the cuvee and longer than required bottle aging on the lees, yielding gorgeous, pure fruit impeccably balanced with chalky minerality that finishes long, each cuvee uniquely identified with a different colored plaque (i.e., the round metal disk on top of the cork).

95WI 93WA 93V

Terroirs Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru NV is an assemblage of four Côte de Blancs Grand Cru cuvées from old vine plantings in Avize, Cramant, Oger and Oiry. This Terroirs is 40% from the 2018 and 2019 vintages and fermented in stainless steel, with 60% reserve wine kept in oak, aged 36 to 40 months on lees and finished with a four gram per liter dosage. Complex and redolent of Meyer lemon curd, crushed stone, butter pastry, almond nougat and honeysuckle, the medium-bodied palate has an electrified, silky acid energy flowing through a richly textured, citrusy mid-palate with a soft chalky grip. Beautifully layered, refreshing and balanced throughout, the finish goes on and on.

95+ points, Sarah Mayo, Wine Independent (Nov 2023)

The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Grand Cru Terroirs is an excellent introduction to the estate’s Chardonnays. Disgorged in August 2024 with three grams per liter dosage, it’s composed of 20% from the 2021 vintage (vinified in tank), 50% from 2020 and 30% from 2019, with half of the reserve wines aged on the lees in approximately 30-year-old demi-muids. Heavily based on Oger (around 40% of the blend), with the remainder coming from Oiry, Cramant and Avize, it’s already expressive, offering aromas of honeysuckle, nectarine, bread and fresh hazelnut. Medium to full-bodied with bright acidity and complemented by a pillowy mousse, it concludes with a long, sapid finish.

93 points, Kristaps Karklins, Wine Advocate (Dec 2024)

The NV Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Terroirs Grand Cru is another terrific wine in the lineup this year. Chalk, white pepper, sage and mint meld into a core of lemon peel and crushed rocks. All the elements are so well balanced. An equal blend of 2019 and 2018 juice from 100% Grand Cru sites in Avize, Oger, Cramant and Oiry, the Terroirs saw natural fermentation and 100% malolactic fermentation. Dosage is 5 grams per liter. Disgorged: June, 2023.

2023 Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc Reserve (750ml)

From the New Zealand region with “a towering reputation in the world of Sauvignon Blanc” according to the Wine Advocate’s Erin Larkin, the bright and refreshing 92 pt. 2023 Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc Reserve offers layers of vibrant citrus and lush tropical fruit hinting of freshly cut herbs with crisp acidity on a lengthy mineral finish, an outstanding value for fans of Marlborough Sauv Blanc and anyone seeking a refreshingly delicious white bargain priced for stocking the cooler.

With family roots in New Zealand dating back to 1867, third generation John Neylon planted his first parcel of commercial vines in the lower Wairau Valley in the early 2000’s, releasing his first vintage of Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc in 2007 and expanding vineyard holdings over the next decades to become one of the largest family-owned wineries in New Zealand. Fed by pure melting snow from the peaks of the Southern Alps, Rapaura’s sustainably farmed vineyards are located on the South Island’s Wairau Plains, the Sauvignon Blanc vines planted in well-drained soils over a deep underground aquifer that eliminates the need for irrigation. Preserving the freshness of the grapes by immediately pressing after harvest and employing cool fermentation in stainless steel, the alluring 92 pt. 2023 Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc Reserve was sourced from vineyards in the Dillons Point and Wairau sub-regions, yielding an “elegant” Sauv Blanc boasting “fresh acidity with good intensity and texture” according to Decanter and revealing intensely aromatic passion fruit and lemon peel flavors on a lively, mouthwatering finish.

Expressing its pristine origins with an intensity that “few places on earth can deliver” according to the Wine Advocate’s Erin Larkin, the refreshing 92 pt. 2023 Rapaura Springs Sauvignon Blanc Reserve expertly balances bright fruit flavors, heady aromatics and brisk acidity, a deliciously drinkable, textbook New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc that begs for another taste at an unbeatable price.

2019 Chateau La Vieille Cure (750ml)
Merlot from Fronsac, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

"Always a winner, I can't remember the last vintage of this cuvée that didn't put a smile on my face." - Jeb Dunnuck

Declared “so reliable” by Jane Anson that it’s “a bellwether to the success of a vintage,” Château La Vieille Cure is considered the standard bearer for Fronsac, its exceptional consistency over the last decade driven by winemaker Jean-Luc Thunevin, the original garagiste pioneer and owner of Château Valandraud, who took the reins in 2013. The 20-hectare La Vieille Cure vineyard is situated in a single, contiguous plot facing Pomerol, planted mostly to Merlot vines averaging 40 years of age with the oldest at over 75 years. This duo of value stunners from 2018 & 2019 puts Anson's words into full perspective, as each rendition captures the quintessential character of the vintage while offering the unmistakable signature of this benchmark Fronsac terroir.

Defined by the vintage's power and opulence, the seductive 2018 La Vieille Cure "is a total pleasure bomb" according to Antonio Galloni, "In a word: fabulous." Jeb Dunnuck likewise sums it up as "a smoking wine that readers should snatch up!" The slightly more refined and approachable 94-point 2019 (again, a hallmark of the vintage) is "just an impeccably made, satisfying, classic Right Bank beauty."

These confirm that Bordeaux continues to be a hotbed of unbeatable values, offering wines of superb sophistication and cellar potential for prices that allow anyone to load the cellar and reap the rewards for years to come.

Fronsacs are often a little austere when just in bottle, as their limestone soils are showing maximum impact. Be patient though, as this will flesh out within a few years and provide luscious black cherry and damson fruits alongside the chocolate and tar notes. A yield of 42hl/ha. 70% new oak. First full year under new owner Jerome Pignard, who bought from the American team of Colin Ferenbach and Peter Sachs. Jean-Luc Thunevin consultant.

A year-in, year-out best value, the 2019 Château La Vieille Cure is another winner from this château that does everything right. Revealing a deep ruby/purple hue as well as great aromatics of black cherries, tobacco leaf, spicy oak, and loamy earth, it's medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced, has silky tannins, and a great finish. It's just an impeccably made, satisfying, classic Right Bank beauty to drink over the coming 10-12 years. Bravo!

2022 Raventos i Blanc Blanc de Blancs (750ml)
Xarel-lo from Catalonia, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Renowned as the benchmark for vineyard-driven sparkling wines in Spain, these impeccably crafted 93-point Raventos selections express their mineral-rich terroir in a fresh, elegant style, offering richly concentrated fruit with balanced acidity on a fine beaded mousse and delivering “unmatched value” according to the Wine Spectator’s Keith Newton at unbeatable, best on the market pricing.

Boasting a 500 year history stretching over 21 generations as growers in Catalonia, the Raventos family are pioneers of the Cava industry, producing the first bottle of Cava under the Cordoniu label in the late 1800’s by applying the traditional method used to make Champagne to a blend of classic Penedes grape varieties. Selling their interest in Cordoniu in 1984 in response to a Cava’s overall decline in quality and reputation, the Raventos family refocused on making vineyard-driven sparkling wines from their 90-hectare biodynamically farmed estate across from their old winery and established Raventós i Blanc in 1986, officially withdrawing from the Cava classification in 2012 while championing the creation of a new D.O. with higher standards. A blend of 49% Xarel·lo, 34% Macabeo and 12% Parellada with the addition of 5% old vine Monastrell to add complexity and enhance its rosy color, the Wine Spectator’s Alison Napjus calls the lush 95 pt. 2022 Raventos i Blanc de Nit Rosado Brut Rose “a bright and harmonious sparkler” with “snappy acidity” and a refined, creamy texture resulting from extended less aging, its name translating as ‘Of the Night’ in Catalan in reference to the estate’s cool evening harvest times considered optimal for preserving freshness. Sourced from vines averaging over 40 years of age and composed of 40% Xarel·lo, 39% Macabeu, 15% Parellada and 6% Malvasia de Sitges, the fresh and silky 93 pt. 2022 Raventos i Blanc Blanc de Blancs is a bright, aromatic sparkler with impeccable balance described as “pure, clean and pleasant” and declared “complex and expressive beyond its price point” by the Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez.

Among “the finest and most elegant sparkling wines being made in Spain” according to Vinous critic Joaquin Hidalgo, this enticing 93 pt. duo from leading Spanish producer Raventos delivers incredible bang for the buck among its sparkling wine peers, bargain priced for mixing a case and a sure bet for sparkling wine lovers seeking to pop the cork more often.

Elegant citrus and white flower aromas, with a persistent, lively mousse. Fresh green apple, melon, chamomile, and mineral notes evolve into orange blossom and violets, then sherbet, lemon curd and earthy flavours. Youthful, precise, with hidden depths, with a vanilla, strawberry, citrus, and greengage finish.

93 points, Decanter (May 2024)

The 2022 Blanc de Blancs comes from the lower terraces of the property and grapes purchased from local growers. It's a blend of 50% Xarel.lo, 30% Macabeo, 15% Parellada and 5% Malvasía de Sitges that refermented in bottle where it was kept with the lees for at least 18 months. It has a pale and bright color with some green tints denoting youth and is clean and fruit-driven with a Mediterranean nose with notes of fennel and aromatic herbs and a tasty palate. It gives good pleasure for the price; it has tension, balance and fruit but is not heavy and has a tasty, almost salty twist in the finish. This is pure, clean and pleasant, complex and expressive beyond its price point. 210,000 bottles produced.

92 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (May 2024)

The 2022 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs is composed of 50% Xarel·lo, 30% Macabeu, 15% Parellada and 5% Malvasía de Sitges, sourced from Conca del Riu Anoia in Penedès. Aged for two years on the lees, this sparkling wine reveals aromas of lime and green apple, complemented by hazelnut and bakery tones. Dry and delicate, the ethereal flow contrasts with a crunchy, lightly bubbly palate. Saline in character, it lingers with a chalky texture. This is a precise, flavorful sparkling wine from Penedès.

2021 Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaret River, Western Australia, Australia
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Earning the #2 spot on the Wine Spectator’s Top 10 Wine Values of 2023, the impressive 93 pt. 2021 Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon boasts rich aromatic dark fruit hinting of earthy cedar and spice with fresh acidity and fine tannins, crafted by the pioneers of Australia’s Margaret River renowned for “elegant and wonderfully pure Cabernet Sauvignons” according to Angus Hughson of Vinous and delivering outstanding bang for the buck for Cab lovers seeking a value priced everyday pour.

A key player in establishing Australia’s remote Margaret River peninsula as one of the top Cabernet Sauvignon growing regions, Vasse Felix founder Tom Cullity planted his first commercial vineyards in the 1960’s, the estate expanding its holdings to over 300 hectares over the next decades and now run by second generation Paul Holmes a Court whose family has owned and operated Vasse since 1987. Located nearly three hours south of the Western Australian capital of Perth, the Margaret River enjoys a warm and dry Mediterranean climate with a long growing season allowing for optimal ripening and flavor development, while maritime breezes from the surrounding Southern and Indian Oceans keep the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes dry and disease free and preserve acidity. Credited with driving the steadily rising quality at Vasse Felix by Vinous critic Hughson, longtime winemaker Virginia Willcock blended mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Malbec and Petit Verdot from across the estate’s sustainably farmed vineyards, fermenting with wild yeasts and aging the 2021 Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon in a mix of 1 to 5 year old French oak barrique for 11 months, yielding a “powerfully structured” Cab according to the Wine Enthusiast’s Christina Pickard that’s crafted to be enjoyed young and built to evolve over the next decade.

Described as “one of the region's standard-bearers” by the Wine Advocate’s Joe Czerwinski, the rich and vibrant 93 pt. 2021 Vasse Felix Filius Cabernet Sauvignon transparently expresses the distinctive Margaret River combination of “elegant structure and juicy fruit flavors” according to the Wine Spectator’s MaryAnn Worobiec, a great deal for fans of boldly structured Aussie Cabs at an easy to reach for price.

Stunning and complex, this stylish, concentrated red offers pure raspberry puree and black cherry flavors that show details of earthy dried porcini mushroom, along with notes of toasted herbs, sandalwood and espresso bean. The long finish reveals firming tannins, but they remain polished and effortless. Drink now through 2038. 15,000 cases imported.

#2 - Wine Spectator Top 10 Wine Values of 2023

Plenty on offer for the price, although paradoxically not the best vintage for a value offering. The tannins, a bit bony and ungenerous. Conversely, I like the savory elements here and feel that things will gel and fill out with time. A slick of blackcurrant, green bean, sage and mint, before the shins and elbows of youth nudge the inner gums. Despite the accessible pricing, give this time. Drink or hold.

The classically styled 97-point 2020 Domaine Durieu Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Lucile Avril is a collectible-caliber stunner from 100-year-old Grenache vines delivering “beautiful Provençal character” according to Jeb Dunnuck. "Super-concentrated, super-structured, but also more elegant than a wine built on this monumental scale can theoretically be."- James Suckling

Described by Robert Parker himself as “one of the up-and-coming superstar estates of Châteauneuf-du-Pape” over a decade ago, Domaine Durieu is now a bona fide force in the appellation under the direction of third-generation winemaker Vincent Durieu. The 2020 Lucile Avril is a blend of mostly Grenache, the oldest vines dating from 1914, with 10% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah, planted in the Farguerol lieu-dit’s blue clay and limestone soils on a plateau just north of the town of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Vinifying the grapes separately with indigenous yeasts, Durieu aged the 2020 Lucile Avril in concrete tanks for 18 months, balancing its lush, herb- and spice-scented fruit on a framework of firm, well-integrated tannins that guarantee years of evolution.

From a 2020 vintage yielding wines with “energy and verve” according to Decanter’s Matt Walls, the 2020 is "pure, seamless, incredibly elegant, and full-bodied ... another straight-up gorgeous wine from this team that readers will love to have in their cellar," as described by Dunnuck. Rarely do we get an opportunity on such an impeccably balanced, old-vine Châteauneuf-du-Pape at such an unbeatable price. Simply put, this wine is stunning.

Smelling this great Chateauneuf is like gazing into a deep chasm. Amazing complexity with aromas ranging from black raspberries through to candied orange, but also notes of raw meat and licorice. Super-concentrated, super-structured, but also more elegant than a wine built on this monumental scale can theoretically be. Extremely long, complete finish. A cuvee of 80% grenache, 10% syrah and 10% mourvedre. Drinkable now, but best from 2025.

97 points, Stuart Pigott, James Suckling (May 2023)

Lastly, and surpassing what the estate achieved in 2019, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape Lucile Avril is based on 80% Grenache and 10% each of Syrah and Mourvedre that was brought up all in concrete tanks. It's the deepest ruby-colored wine in the lineup and boasts a brilliant perfume of pure blackberries, ground pepper, licorice, dried garrigue, leather, and Asian spice. Pure, seamless, incredibly elegant, and full-bodied, it's another straight-up gorgeous wine from this team that readers will love to have in their cellar.

2022 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California
B-21 Top Recommendation

Consistently earning critical acclaim vintage over vintage including the #4 spot on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100, the decadent 2022 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon continues the Faust reputation for over delivering value, an immensely satisfying Napa Cab from the founder of Quintessa offering an enticing combination of fresh, opulent dark fruit and lush, velvety tannins, unbeatably priced for Napa Cab fans to scoop up by the case and enjoy often.

Located just past Beringer heading north on Highway 29, Faust chose to open its new sleek tasting and event center in a once run down Victorian on a hillside near Healdsburg, using it as an opportunity to expose visitors to Napa’s lesser-known, less-visited Coombsville AVA 20 minutes to the south where the Faust vineyard is located. Recognizing the cooler region’s potential for growing Cabernet Sauvignon over a decade before it became an AVA in 2001, former Concha y Toro CEO and longtime California vintner Agustin Huneeus established Faust on the site of a former dairy farm in 1998, the early vintages of Faust establishing the reputation of Coombsville as a site capable of producing high-quality, complex Cabs and attracting a who’s who of celebrated winemakers to the area including Andy Erickson and Paul Hobbs. Located just east of the town of Napa, the certified organic 128-acre Faust vineyard is planted in rich gravelly loam and volcanic rock soils that enhance minerality while the nearby cup and saucer like ridge coined the ‘Coombsville caldera’ funnels winds from the San Pablo Bay and create conditions for extended, gradual ripening. Blending 86% Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc primarily from Faust’s Coombsville site, former Harlan and Groth winemaker David Jelinek aged the 2022 Faust for 20 months in 25% new French oak barrels, yielding a bold and pleasurable Cab with elegant, plush fruit and bright acidity built to age gracefully over the next decade.

Declaring the AVA “Napa Valley's Rising Star,” the Wine Enthusiast called Coombsville a top choice for "buyers that desire something new from Napa,” the 2022 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon living up to its reputation as an exceptional, cellar worthy Napa Cab reflecting the pioneering winemaking legacy of Quintessa founder Agustin Huneeus at an incredible bargain price.

After centuries of grape growing and playing a role in the creation of the Cava DO, the Raventós family chose to leave the appellation in 2012 and champion the ‘future DO’ of Conca del Riu Anoia. Only indigenous varieties are grown and the vineyard is certified biodynamic. Yields were down more than 20% in this drought year but the fruit was very healthy. A little local Monastrell (5%) provides colour and texture, rounded out by 18 months of ageing. Christine Parkinson: Mandarin, vanilla and blood orange. Fresh, vibrant palate: citrus, bitter melon. Acidity provides balance and poise. A lick of tannin supports the creamy texture. Very long. Sarah Jane Evans MW: Subtle, restrained, perfumed. Lightly grippy with a savoury pastry note; lacks the usual sweet fruit. Stylish, gastronomic. Blossoms in the glass. Delicious. Valentin Radosav: Elegant strawberry and red flower aromas. "The team [at Lingua Franca] led by winemaker Thomas Savre is producing a portfolio of wines that show the power and complexity possible to obtain in Oregon." - Eric Guido,Vinous

Renowned for crafting top-scoring Burgundy for his family’s Côte-de-Beaune estate, master winemaker Dominique Lafon worked as a consultant to Oregon’s Evening Land Vineyards before collaborating with master sommelier and Evening Land general manager Larry Stone to co-found Lingua Franca in Willamette Valley’s Eola-Amity Hills in 2015. Lafon's expertise at crafting exceptional Burgundy was credited with driving Evening Land’s rising reputation early on. Purchasing the 140-acre Janzen Farm, a prime parcel situated next to Evening Land’s Seven Springs site and adjacent to Domaine Serene’s Jerusalem Hill Vineyard, Stone and Lafon then worked with renowned Willamette viticulturist Mimi Casteel to determine the precise mix of clones to plant based on the site’s varied soils, utilizing organic and biodynamic viticulture throughout the estate’s 66-acre vineyard and hiring Evening Land’s former assistant winemaker and Lafon protege Thomas Savre to craft its vineyard-driven wines. Boasting experience at legendary Burgundy estates including Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Domaine Dujac, and Maison Nicolas Potel, Savre employs a transparent, minimal-intervention approach in the cellar, resulting in wines that now boast an impressive track record of world-class quality and glowing acclaim from the critical press. The Avni Pinot Noir delivers on precision and freshness all with a savoury lift. Sourced from both the Lingua Franca estates and a variety of neighbouring Eola-Amity Hills vineyards, as well as those from south of the AVA and north to Yamhill-Carlton. It's reflective of the volcanic soils that make the appellation perfectly paired with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Based on 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, aged in 40% new barrels, it has perfectly integrated oak, ripe, fine-grained tannins, and outstanding overall balance. Give bottles just a year or three and enjoy over the following 10-15 years or more.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

The 2020 Labegorce, matured in 40% new oak, has a fragrant, floral bouquet with wilted rose petals infusing the lively red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit. There is something "airy" about the aromatics here. The palate is slightly honeyed in texture, saturated tannins, a mixture of red and black fruit commingling with white pepper and iodine. Great persistence and salinity on the finish - an excellent, quite substantial Margaux for long-term ageing.

93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Feb 2023)

Deep garnet-purple in colored, the 2020 Labegorce tumbles out of the glass with fragrant notions of kirsch, red roses, and stewed plums, leading to suggestions of damp soil and truffles. Beautiful, perfumed blackcurrants on the nose, smells lovely. Juicy and supple, this has a nice roundness and a fleshy texture in the glass while still being quite focused and streamlined. This has a sleekness to the tannins, the fruit goes in one line from start to finish, so it’s not so expansive or particularly deep but does have a nice style to it. Good acidity, concentration and freshness. Focused, driven, clean with precision. Classic, easy to drink and to recommend.
