Reflecting its well-earned reputation as "the Baby Beaucastel," the 2023 Coudoulet de Beaucastel is another terrific vintage from one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape's iconic domaines, a solidly built, age-worthy Côtes-du-Rhône that takes the category a step up in terms of quality, character, and pedigree – the Coudoulet vines lie just on the "wrong side" of the road from Beaucastel's official Châteauneuf parcels, so the moniker isn't just a trope. Soils, micro-climates and vine heritage are all similar, so the Coudoulet wine always offers glimpses of its world-class terroir.
This JS93 "solid, focused, juicy and poised wine" is picture-perfect introduction to the vintage at Beaucastel. "The 2023s are particularly successful, combining technical precision with the identity of the vintage. Cool-toned, precise and dense without excess weight, they rank among the most compelling wines of the appellation," according to Yohan Castaing's latest Wine Advocate report. We've always loved Coudoulet for its clear Beaucastel soul, which is on full display in 2023, but also because it's available for a fraction of the price of even many lesser Châteauneufs.
A solid, focused, juicy and poised wine, showing red berries, sweet spices and dried-flower aromas. Medium-bodied with finely grained tannins. Lovely crushed-strawberry character to the silky texture. Bright and fruit-forward, this has a seductive, succulent finish and a lift of peppercorns. Drink or hold.

The 2023 Cotes du Rhone Coudoulet de Beaucastel reveals aromas of dark berries, flowers, spices and garrigue, followed by a medium- to full-bodied, round and charming palate framed by velvety tannins. It concludes with a long, fruity and gourmand finish. This is a great vintage for Coudoulet—a blend of 30% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache Noir, 30% Syrah and 10% Cinsault.

Bottled three months ago and showing beautifully, the 2023 Côtes Du Rhône Coudoulet De Beaucastel is based on 30% each of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvèdre with 10% Cinsault and brought up all in foudre. It offers darker berries, pepper, sappy flowers, and some obvious stony, earth-like minerality in a medium-bodied, nicely concentrated, layered style. It's balanced with terrific purity, ripe tannins, and outstanding length, offering incredible pleasure today, yet it will keep for 10-12 years. Drink 2025-2036.
