2020 Chateau Fontenil (750ml)
Merlot from Fronsac, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More From the estate owned by renowned enologist and 100 pt. winemaker Michel Rolland, the lush and finessed 95 pt. 2020 Chateau Fontenil boasts dark, ripe polished fruit with elegant, integrated tannins on a long velvety finish, meticulously crafted of Merlot from an excellent vintage that “delivers the goods” according to Neal Martin of Vinous and a superb value. Located in the lesser known Fronsac appellation on the right bank of the Gironde, Chateau Fontenil was established by Michel Rolland and his wife Dany in the mid-1980s, their search for a family country home leading them to a grand but rundown house in Saillans adjacent to seven hectares of old vines. First purchasing the vineyard and eventually the Chateau, the Rollands spent over a decade on a top to bottom renovation of the estate, restoring the Chateau, modernizing the wine-making facilities and replanting vineyards. Situated on a south facing slope overlooking the river Isle and the town of Libourne, the vineyards span 11 hectares planted mostly to Merlot in clay and limestone soils, located at the highest elevation on the plateau of Fronsac with vines averaging 45 years of age. Manually harvesting and vinifying plot by plot, the 2020 Chateau Fontenil exemplifies Michel Rolland’s supple, opulent style, aged in 60% new French oak for 15-18 months to yield vibrant fruit and smooth, fine grained tannins described as “impeccably balanced” by Antonio Galloni and finishing with “a welcome kick of acidity” according to Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson on a lengthy, elegant finish. While many of his client’s top scoring Bordeaux blends have sky high prices to match, Michel Rolland’s elegant 95 pt. 2020 Chateau Fontenil is a superb value, “sexy, seamless, straight-up impressive” according to Jeb Dunnuck that’s “well worth a case purchase,” ready to drink and worthy of aging at an unbeatable price that makes it easy for Bordeaux lovers to do both.

Working as a consultant to some of Bolgheri’s earliest estates, Michele Satta became known as an expert in its coastal terroir, planting many of the region’s first vineyards including Ornellaia’s legendary Masseto and founding his winery in Castagneto Carducci two years before the Bolgheri DOC was established in 1982. Described by Jeb Dunnuck as producing accessible blends “with a unique elegance and sense of place from varietals not often championed on the Bolgheri coast,” Michele remained convinced of the area’s potential for producing Sangiovese despite its growing reputation for international grapes, now producing his portfolio from the family’s biodynamically farmed 24-hectare estate along with his son and second generation winemaker Giacomo Satta. Described by the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner as embodying “the fierce spirit of independence that is encapsulated in all of Satta’s wines,” the 2021 Michele Satta Piastraia Bolgheri Superiore is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 20% Sangiovese, each varietal fermented separately with natural yeasts in cone-truncated oak barrels and aged in 20% new French oak for 18 months and another 24 months in bottle, yielding a fresh, vibrant blend with well-integrated acidity and harmonious tannins built to evolve over the next decade and showing “the potential of Sangiovese in this part of the Tuscan coast” according to critic Kerin O’Keefe. 2020 Cheval des Andes (750ml)
Malbec from Mendoza, Argentina
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More “The wine has the ultra sleek and polished texture and the elegance and the balance that is the signature here.” - Luis Gutierrez, Wine Advocate When the winemaking expertise of the legendary First Growth Cheval Blanc is applied to grapes grown in top Argentinian terroir, collectors of exceptional Bordeaux-style blends reap the rewards. Argentine icon Cheval des Andes, a blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, is counted among “the top wines from South America'' according to Jane Anson, delivering superb value for collectors vintage after vintage. Surrounded by stunning views of the rugged Andes Mountains, Cheval des Andes reflects the exacting standards of pioneering estate manager Pierre Lurton. Inspired by the discovery of the Las Compuertas parcel of ungrafted Malbec planted in Mendoza in 1929, Bordeaux-born Lurton collaborated with Argentina’s Terrazas de los Andes to produce a blend of the old-vine Malbec with Cabernet Sauvignon, reconnecting Château Cheval Blanc with the history of St-Emilion, where the once abundant Malbec was devastated by phylloxera. Sourced from two organically farmed estate vineyards spanning 50 hectares, Las Compuertas lies in Lujan de Cuyo on gentle slopes at an altitude of 1,070 meters above sea level, its cool microclimate and deep silty-loam soils are optimal for growing and ripening Cabernet Sauvignon, while Altamira in the Valle de Uco was planted with Malbec in 1945 at an altitude of 1,100 meters. Each vineyard divided into subplots and the grapes harvested and transported separately in refrigerated trucks to preserve freshness in the warmer 2020 vintage. Fermented parcel by parcel by winemaker Gerald Gabillet, formerly of Château Angélus, the richly concentrated 2020 Cheval des Andes is a blend of equal amounts of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Petit Verdot, aged in a mix of 50% new French oak barrels and larger foudres for up to 18 months and revealing “rich, polished tannins that deliver a juicy, balanced mouthfeel” according to Joaquin Hidalgo of Vinous with a decade or more of evolution ahead. Reflecting its reputation as the “Grand Cru of Argentina” and summed up as “great stuff” by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson, the pedigreed 98-point 2020 Cheval des Andes is a pure and powerful expression of high-altitude Malbec with the structure and intensity of Cabernet Sauvignon, equally appealing for fans of Argentinian Malbec and collectors of “the very best and most sought-after New World reds” according to critic Tim Atkin and promising to deliver years of pleasurable drinking at an unbeatable collectible price.

2019 Abadia Retuerta Seleccion Especial Sardon de Duero (750ml)
Tempranillo from Ribera del Duero, Castilla y Leon, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More Traveling along the N-122, following the River Duero in the direction of Vega Sicilia, we reached the small town of Sardon del Duero. Just outside this town, about a mile down the road in Retuerta, the Count of Castile commissioned the construction of a series of Abbeys in the 12th century. One of the most important was the monastery of Santa María de Retuerta (Abadia de Retuerta), built in a beautiful enclave on the banks of the Duero River – of all the monasteries built during this period, Abadia de Retuerta is one of only two in existence today. Stunning, awe-inspiring, eye-popping in every sense – just plain nuts... this place is beautiful. Restoration began on the buildings as well as the Abbey in the 1990s. The current owners are heirs to this place and they did it right. A majestic spa, a Michelin starred restaurant, a Relais & Chateaux luxury hotel, guided tours via helicopter.... Quoting Maître de Maison, Andrés Araya, "Every architectural detail has been immaculately preserved. The monks’ cells are now guestrooms, the chapter house is the lounge bar, and the refectory is now a sumptuous restaurant." Friends, it's THAT amazing! As for the vineyards, they are planted to the north facing slopes, on the south side of the River Duero. As with their famous neighbors – Vega Sicilia – these hillside vineyards on the south side of the river gradually ascend, topping out at 2,500 feet from their base near the River of 2,100 feet elevation. Working with world-renowned winemaker Pascal Delbeck (Chateau Petrus), the team here isolated the best parcels (pagos – 54 in all), planting 510 acres to a combination of soils ranging from clay and gravel near the river to limestone mixed with boulders and stones on the upper reaches of the hillside. Mostly Tempranillo, along with varying percentages of Cabernet and Syrah gives us Retuerta's fascinating, classically unique flavor profile. Planted in the 1990s (Petrus' winemaker as their guide), the only major difference between the vineyards here and Vega Sicilia is vine age... the bang for the buck is unbelievable!

2022 Thibaud Boudignon Anjou Blanc (750ml)
Chenin Blanc from Anjou, Loire, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More "[Boudignon's] attention to detail in the winemaking process, precise viticulture, dedication and passion for the terroirs mark him as one of France’s foremost vignerons and winemakers today." - Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate Few winemakers have achieved such rapid ascent to cult status in the past two decades as Thibaud Boudignon. Once the long-time winemaker at Domaine de la Soucherie set out on his own, the critical and collectible aficionados took quick notice of his utterly uncompromising style and craftsmanship, and demand has been on an upward trajectory ever since. It's rare to find Boudignon's wines in any meaningful quantity, so tight are the allocations relative to their fanbase, so when we were offered this trio at jaw-dropping pricing, we jumped at it without a second thought. Leading off, the 93-point 2022 Anjou Blanc is the perfect introduction to this remarkable domaine. "Medium-bodied, perfectly balanced with a seamless, layered texture," and displaying flawless varietal purity, it should be on the shortlist of anyone who's a fan of cult-caliber class for a bargain. Venturing into the single-vineyard wines, we truly see Boudignon's elite skills at work. The 94-point 2022 Clos de Fremine and 97-point 2021 Clos de la Hutte demonstrate clearly why Yohan Castaing declares, "[Boudignon] offers wines of purity, tension and finesse with virtually no rivals in Savennières." Showstopping terroir clarity and the potential for decades of cellar evolution put this duo firmly in the company of France's savviest cellar-worthy white wine buys, but as you might guess, our quantities are very limited, so collectors would be wise to strike quickly at this opportunity, especially at our must-see, market-best prices across the board.
