Crafted from some of Spain’s oldest vineyards in Castilla y Leon, the crisp and enticing, 92-point 2020 Ossian Quintaluna Verdejo offers richly aromatic fruit with subtle minerality and vibrant acidity on a silky, mouthwatering finish, a delicious Spanish white with layered complexity value priced for stocking the cooler to enjoy often over the next few years.
Known for producing “rounder, more serious and minerally expressions of Verdejo” according to James Suckling, Ossian Vides y Vinos was established in the village of Nieva northwest of Madrid in 2005 to explore the winemaking potential of Segovia’s extremely old Verdejo vines, the region’s sandy soils helping to keep phylloxera bay while it ravaged other areas of Spain at the turn of the 20th century. Situated within the boundaries of the Rueda appellation, Ossian’s organically farmed vineyards span over 110 hectares, of which 50 hectares are planted with ungrafted, pre-phylloxera vines ranging up to 160 years of age on the Voltoya River terraces between 840 and 930 meters above sea level, enjoying warm sunny days and cooler nighttime temperatures that enhance concentration and preserve acidity. Sourced from various plots in 5 different villages of Segovia comprised of 60% pre-Phylloxera and 40% younger vines and fermented with indigenous yeasts, the refined 2020 Ossian Quintaluna Verdejo was aged for nine months on the lees in a mix of stainless steel tanks and French foudres, yielding a rich and layered Verdejo that’s “bright and well-integrated” according to Wine Spectator’s Alison Napjus “with a lasting, lively finish.”

The 2020 Quintaluna is pure Verdejo from small plots on sandy soils in the province of Segovia, fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts. They still use grapes from external suppliers but are working toward using 100% their own grapes (which they might achieve in 2023); therefore, the wine is not certified organic, because some of the vineyards from the growers are not certified. It has a balsamic nose reminiscent of bay leaf, dried yellow flowers, chamomile and pollen intermixed with pit fruit. It has a dry palate and a chalky texture, with balance and finesse, with moderate ripeness and 13.5% alcohol. 110,000 bottles.

Light yellow in the glass, this wine has aromas of tangerine and lemon zest. Full on the palate, it conveys flavors of bergamot, yellow currant, aniseed and a touch of crumbled sage. Refreshing acidity bathes the palate from first sip through finish.
