With 150 acres of vineyard holdings in Chablis, of which a third is 1er Cru and Grand Cru, the exciting potential at Long-Depaquit is now in the hands of Cecilia Trimaille who became the estate manager in 2018 – arriving from Chateau Margaux where she was vineyard manager. I look forward to tasting the 2018 range with her when international travel resumes. My tasting of 2017s revealed three superb wines, Le Clos – Grand Cru, Moutonne – Grand Cru Monopole, and Vaillons 1er Cru. Remarkably the Vallions stole the show. 2017s can be problematic in particular due to reduced yields and that affects overall balance in many ways. What makes the Vallions special is that it has all the defining attributes of great Chablis. Intense aromatics of the telltale Kimmeridgian soils with key lime, iodine and white flower – dazzling. The palate is rich, intense – textbook Vaillons, from vines in their late 30s. The finish has enormous energy, length, and intensity.


This white leans toward the minerally side, with iodine, chalk, lemon and apple aromas and flavors. Steely and intense, offering a long, stony aftertaste. Drink now through 2024. 250 cases imported.

I love the effusive mineral and herbal freshness of this elegant 1er Cru Chablis, which also has attractive succulence on the mid palate and a long, chalky finish that screams out for seafood. Drink or hold.

The 2017 Chablis 1er Cru Les Vaillons is still a little introverted after its recent bottling, unfurling in the glass with notes of lemon oil, iodine, dried white flowers and fresh peach. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and supple, with a satiny attack, good depth at the core and a precise, saline finish.

The 2017 Chablis Les Vaillons 1er Cru is resonant and super-expressive. Lemon confit, almond, dried herbs, crushed flowers and mint come together in an attractive, nuanced Chablis that will drink well right out of the gate. The finish dries out just a touch. Otherwise, the 2017 is nicely done.
