Just a step behind the Sainte Epine, the 2012 St Joseph Cuvee Francois de Tournon exhibits classic black raspberry, cassis, spiced meats and hints of licorice in its ripe, supple and beautifully pure profile. Aged 16 months in 30% new and 70% in 2- to 3-year-old barrels, it has medium to full-bodied richness, integrated acidity and building tannin. Drink it anytime over the coming decade.

The black tea, iron and steeped plum and blackberry fruit notes are well-formed already, with enough taut graphite and charcoal elements on the finish to merit short-term cellaring. Rock-solid. Best from 2015 through 2020. 140 cases imported.

Deep ruby. Sexy, mineral-tinged cherry and red berry scents are complicated by vanilla and woodsmoke. Sweet and energetic, offering juicy black raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that become livelier and sweeter with air. A suave violet pastille quality comes up on the nervy finish, which shows very good clarity and smooth tannins.
