A wonderful wine from the Uco Valley of Mendoza that opens with fine fruit, richness and molten earth. The palate is big as they come but not hard and out of whack, and the flavors are an amalgam of rich black plum, berry fruit, fig paste and chocolate. Smoky and sultry on the back end, with mocha and coffee for finishing notes. Drink now through 2014.

The opaque purple-colored 2006 Monteviejo is composed of 60% Malbec, 20% Syrah, 10% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon aged for 16 months in new French oak. It exhibits an expressive perfume of pain grille, pencil lead, lavender, black cherry, blueberry, and licorice. On the palate it is full-bodied, dense, and layered. It has that extra dimension of complexity that is the result of an exceptional vintage as well as enough ripe tannin to develop for another 3-4 years. It should provide immense pleasure between 2012 and 2026.

malbec with 20% syrah and a bit of merlot) Full medium ruby. Aromas of blackberry, violet, licorice, lead pencil and sexy oak spices. Penetrating, minerally and densely packed, with excellent energy to the dark berry and bitter chocolate flavors. Conveys a light touch as the wine's sweetness is quite restrained. Finishes chocolatey and long, with broad tannins. This needs a couple years in the cellar.
