During the 1940’s singer Helen Forrest was
at the top of the hit parade singing “Busy
as a Bee” with the Benny Goodman Band. Busy
is just what this young couple (pictured
left) Mark and Helen Frassrand were; both
hard at work in Detroit’s Chrysler plant.
After work they frequented the nearby Green
Gables Beer Garden and Package. Their
favorite stop went up for sale in 1947. The
following year they decided to buy the Green
Gables and keep their daytime jobs. They
changed the name to B-21 with the logo
fashioned after the war time bomber; “B-21”
with the neon silhouette of a plane. This
also meant, as it does today, that customers
must B at least 21 years old. Their penchant
for hospitality turned the B-21 in to a
swing’n spot. The oldest of their three
children, Mark Jr., assisted after school as
B-21’s janitor.

Victor Bergeron (pictured right), known by the name of his
Polynesian themed restaurants, "Trader Vic",
invents the rum based "Mai Tai" drink. The
name was derived, supposedly, by two of
Vic's visiting friends from Tahiti after a
taste; "Mai tai -- ro ae" meaning "out
of this world -- the best".
