2019 La Rioja Alta Reserva Vina Alberdi (750ml)
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain

Called “one of the most traditional addresses in Rioja” by the Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez, the lush 92 pt. 2019 La Rioja Alta Reserva Vina Alberdi delivers outstanding bang for the buck for fans of classically crafted Rioja, an elegant ageworthy Riserva offering fresh, aromatic red fruit with balsamic notes of vanilla, caramel and spice balanced by soft, fine tannins on a long, silky finish, already drinking beautifully and value priced for everyday enjoyment.

Founded as a cooperative effort of five enterprising families in 1890, La Rioja Alta merged with the Ardanza Winery in 1904 and became renowned for their signature Vina Ardanza Reserva, crafting their first release of the Vina Alberdi in 1970 as a fresher expression of Tempranillo while maintaining their exceptional criteria for extended aging. Spanning over 400 hectares of organically farmed vineyards, La Rioja Alta sourced the Tempranillo for the 2019 Vina Alberdi from estate vineyards situated in Rodezno and Labastida at 500 to 600 meters above sea level, the low yielding Tempranillo vines averaging over 40 years of age planted in a nitrogen-rich mix of clay and limestone that retains water throughout the hot growing season and enhances concentration. Employing strict selection in the vineyards, the hand harvested grapes are transported under refrigeration and fermented with natural yeasts before being transferred to barrels custom crafted in La Rioja Alta’s onsite cooperage. Employing four rackings from barrel to barrel while separating the sediment by candlelight, the refined 2019 La Rioja Alta Vina Alberdi was aged in new American oak barrels for the first year and in four-year-old American oak barrels for the second year, yielding “a delicate Rioja Red” according to Vinous critic Joaquin Hidalgo revealing intensely aromatic, juicy spiced fruit with vibrant acidity and layers of ripe tannins promising a decade of longevity.

Described by critic Tim Atkin as exhibiting the “elegance and American oak sweetness” of the estate’s flagship Vina Ardanza, the appealing 92 pt. 2019 La Rioja Alta Reserva Vina Alberdi offers the full-bodied richness of age worthy Tempranillo in an approachable style, an affordable luxury declared a “Smart Buy” by the Wine Spectator’s Alison Napjus and an outstanding value for Rioja fans seeking a delicious everyday pour.

Attractive aromas of sweet spices, smoke and seaweed. Some roasted nuts. Hints of Iberico ham. Medium-bodied with a nice rounded character to the tannins and juicy fruit. Pure tempranillo. Drink now.

92 points, James Suckling (Oct 2023)

The 2019 Reserva Viña Alberdi is 100% Tempranillo, sourced from Labastida, Rioja Alavesa and aged for two years in American oak barrels. Garnet in color, the bouquet features vanilla and ripe plum notes along with hints of balsamic and caramel. Dry and juicy on the palate, the polished tannins and silky flow lead to a fairly nimble finish—a delicate Rioja red.

2021 Raventos i Blanc Blanc de Blancs (750ml)
Xarel-lo from Catalonia, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

For over an astonishing 500 years, the Raventos family has been involved with winemaking in the Catalonia region, growing grapes on their historic family-owned estate west of Barcelona since 1497. Inspired by his belief that the fossilized marine limestone soils in the windswept Anoia River Valley would yield a complex sparkling wine, Josep Raventos Fatjo was the first to apply the traditional method used to make Champagne to classic Penedes grape varietals in the late 1800s, his son Manuel later pioneering the blend of the three indigenous grapes, Xarel.lo, Macabeu, and Parellada, that would become the standard for Cava. Witnessing the decline in the quality and reputation of Cava over the next century, the Raventos family separated itself in the 1980s from the Codorniu winery it had founded to focus on making vineyard-driven sparkling wines from their 90-hectare estate, officially withdrawing from the Cava classification in 2012 and championing the creation of a new D.O. with higher standards in the Conca del Riu Anoia area. Crafting the blend of native grapes from biodynamically farmed vines averaging 40 years of age, 21st generation winemaker Pepe Raventos vinified each varietal in stainless steel tanks before blending and bottling it for the secondary fermentation, then aged the 2021 Raventos i Blanc Blanc de Blancs on the lees for a minimum of 18 months, twice the requirement for Cava, yielding fresh, layered fruit with tantalizing minerality balanced by mouthwatering acidity on a creamy mousse.

Described as “one of Spain’s finest and most complex sparkling wines” by Vinous critic Josh Raynolds, declaring it “one of the greatest bubbly values in the world,” the elegant 90 pt. 2021 Raventos i Blanc Blanc de Blancs is a uniquely Spanish sparkler reflecting its mineral-rich terroir, impeccably crafted in the Champagne style and certain to appeal to lovers of the world’s finest sparkling wines looking for a fantastic value.

90WS

Fresh and focused, with a lacy texture, this is a minerally version overall, showing hints of smoke and stone on the nose, plus a salty underpinning to the palate's range of tangerine, ripe yellow plum, blanched almond and chamomile. Xarel-lo, Macabeu, Parellada and Malvasia de Sitges. Disgorged March 2023. Drink now through 2026. 16,600 cases made, 9,000 cases imported.

2023 Diatom Chardonnay (750ml)
Chardonnay from Santa Barbara, California
B-21 Top Recommendation

Fans of winemaker Greg Brewer’s pure and precise Santa Barbara County Chardonnays won’t need convincing to stock up on the new vintage of the elegant 93 pt. 2023 Diatom Chardonnay, transparently expressing the essence of fragrant Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay with shimmering minerality on a vibrant, saline finish and a “screaming value” according to Jeb Dunnuck that over delivers.

Described as “the purest possible expression of Chardonnay from this region” by the Wine Independent’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown, veteran winemaker Greg Brewer established Diatom in 2005 in the Central Coast’s Sta. Rita Hills AVA to capture Chardonnay in its “most pure and unadulterated state,” naming it for the region’s distinctive marine sedimentary soils of fossilized plankton among the largest deposits in the world. Sourced from the Mission Hills Vineyard in Los Alamos, the low yielding Chardonnay vines produce smaller clusters and tiny berries that enhance concentration and depth, while cooling breezes funneling off the Pacific allow for longer ripening and flavor development and preserve the grapes’ natural acidity. Renowned as the co-founder of Brewer-Clifton and Melville with over three decades of winemaking experience, Brewer employed a non-interventionist approach to craft the 2023 Diatom, forgoing the use of oak and malolactic fermentation, an often-employed technique known for producing a softer, more buttery style of Chardonnay and instead producing a crisp, clean Chardonnay in a style reminiscent of Chablis. Fermented and matured in 100% stainless steel, the refined 2023 Diatom Chardonnay beautifully balances bright, lively fruit with refreshing, mineral-tinged acidity, reflecting Brewer’s signature style of “vibrant purity and freshness, with plenty of textural richness on the palate” according to Jeb Dunnuck and a mouthwatering finish that begs for another sip.

From a unique terroir described as producing “natural tight acidity, tension, and an ocean-kissed salinity” by Decanter’s Jessica Dupuy, Greg Brewer’s impeccably balanced 93 pt. 2023 Diatom Chardonnay is richly layered with nuanced complexity and refreshing acidity, crafted by a masterful winemaker to transparently reflect its Sta. Rita Hills origins and an incredible value bargain priced for savvy Chard lovers to scoop up by the case.

95JA 94JS 93WA 93V 93WE 93WI

A superb vintage all over Bordeaux, and absolutely one that you should be searching out with the Crus Classés de Graves. You can wait for this to soften for sure, because the tannins are pretty racy right now, squaring up to the blackcurrant and blackberry fruit rather than cradling it, but there is such a charm to its confidence that I am pretty tempted to say go for it now with a few hours in a carafe. Liqourice, cocoa beans, crème de cassis, espresso and a ton of brambled autumnal fruits. 40% new oak

95 points, Jane Anson (Mar 2022)

This is very perfumed with blackberry and blueberry aromas, but shows a hot-stone and blanched-almond undertone. Medium-to full-bodied with tight and silky tannins that are extremely polished and beautiful. Love the length and balance to this. Try after 2022.

94 points, James Suckling (Feb 2019)

The 2016 Latour Martillac is medium to deep garnet-purple in color with warm plums, kirsch and redcurrant jelly on the nose with touches of bay leaves, iron ore and black soil. Medium-bodied with a well-sustained mid-palate of muscular fruit, it has a firm backbone of fine-grained tannins and wonderful freshness, finishing very long.

93 points, Wine Advocate (Nov 2018)

The 2016 Latour-Martillac offers classic Pessac-Léognan scents on the nose: black fruit, black olive and a touch of sage, plus hints of blue fruit that emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit and fine acidity. A little compact toward the finish, but with good persistence. My feeling is that this will close down quite soon after bottling, but there is a great wine here.

93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Jan 2019)

A structured wine backed by plenty of black-currant fruits, this is initially austere. Its richness needs time to develop and turn into the classically structured wine that this estate does so well. Drink from 2025.

93 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2019)

The 2016 Latour-Martillac is deep garnet in color. It flies out of the glass with energetic notes of crushed red and black currants, warm plums, and pencil lead, plus hints of black olives and truffles. Medium-bodied, the palate is tightly wound with red and black fruit layers intertwined with mineral sparks, framed by grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing with great length.

Depth and power through the mid palate, good quality tannins, this is classically restrained St Estèphe power, with savoury yet juicy black fruits. Living up to its potential En Primeur, one to look out for, and a strong 2nd wine that beats out many 1st wines in the vintage. If you liked the Dame de Montrose 2010, get on board with this.

94 points, Jane Anson (Jan 2022)

Juicy and pleasantly chewy with milk chocolate, walnut and currant aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, creamy and flavorful. Second wine of Montrose. Drink after 2024.

93 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

Very solid, with a core of lightly steeped plum and blackberry fruit, supported by a streak of iron and framed by smoldering tobacco and dark earth notes. Good energy throughout as well, with a mouthwatering echo at the end. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2023 through 2032.

2021 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 (750ml)
Shiraz from South Australia, Australia
B-21 Top Recommendation

Crafted from multi-regional and multi-vineyard fruit in the same rich and robust style as the iconic Grange, Penfold’s lush 93 pt. 2021 Shiraz Bin 28 checks all the boxes for classic Australian Shiraz, offering bold, ripe dark fruit hinting of cocoa and spice with velvety, plush tannins and exhibiting Penfold’s “remarkable mix of character, consistency and value” according to the Wine Spectator’s Harvey Steiman, a reliable and unbeatable value for fans of Aussie Shiraz.

Established in 1844 by pioneering founders Christopher and Mary Penfold, Penfolds has been a leader in the Australian wine industry for nearly two centuries, among the first to cultivate vineyards in Adelaide with vine cuttings from France and England and naming its flagship cuvee in the 1950’s after the founder’s original stone cottage in Magill called the Grange. Sourcing it from the historic Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard, renowned Penfolds winemaker Max Schubert crafted the first vintage of Bin 28 in 1959 while perfecting his Grange experiment in secret, establishing the Penfolds tradition of naming wines for their storage location in the winery’s cellars by referencing a number known as the Batch Identification Number or “Bin” for short. Sourced from four diverse regions with nearly half the fruit coming from the Barossa Valley, winemaker Matt Woo aged the robust 2021 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 for 12 months in 7% new American oak casks, yielding a “spicy, full throttle” Shiraz according to the Wine Advocate’s Erin Larkin with layers of luscious dark fruit and well-integrated tannins promising longevity.

Described by James Suckling as a “full-weighted Australian Shiraz” with “plenty to like,” the enticing 93 pt. 2021 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 showcases this iconic producer's reputation for consistency vintage over vintage, promising Aussie Shiraz fans a deliciously decadent pour at a bargain price and ready to enjoy over the next decade.

93WE 93W&S 92WA 92JS 92AWC 91V

This inky-hued Shiraz is dense, ripe and powerful with quite a bit of oak on display. Chocolate and dusting polish perch atop the concentrated dark fruit and pepper spice on the nose. The palate is rich and luscious, framed in muscular tannins that support, rather than overpower. Classic Penfolds, this drinks well now with protein but could cellar for several more years.

93 points, Christina Pickard, Wine Enthusiast (Mar 2024)

Fresh blueberry depths invest this wine’s tannins with black velvet riches. You can sense the integration of Penfolds’ winemaking, finishing the fermentation in oak. Rosemary and thyme. Luscious and delicious. Ripe and open. It’s not exciting, perhaps, just comforting and beautiful. From an epic vintage, this will last for years. And yet, even now, it’s supple and easy to love.

93 points, Joshua Greene, Wine & Spirits (Dec 2023)

The 2021 Bin 28 Shiraz hails from five regions: McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and Clare Valley. The wine matured for 12 months in American oak (7% new), and this really amplifies the sweet fruit characters in the mouth. It's already nicely integrated aromatically, despite being poured and opened in the same instance (i.e., no preparation prior to tasting), and is redolent with red and purple berry fruit. Spicy, full throttle and loads of tannin in the mouth. Nicely chewy. The first vintage of this wine was in 1959. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

92 points, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate (Jul 2023)

The type of full-weighted Australian shiraz that many expect. While it could be argued that that the style is a bit fusty, what cannot be denied is the moreish feel. Iodine, clove and boysenberry billow toward a nourishing and forceful finish and the reality is that this cuvee, as with so many in the stable, is reliable and delicious. Sure, the oak is a bit fuzzy, but there is plenty to like. Drink or hold.

92 points, Ned Goodwin, James Suckling (Jul 2023)

A McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway, Wrattonbully and Clare Valley sourced shiraz matured in American oak (7% new) for 12 months. Deep crimson in the glass, the wine initially comes across a little shy, showing itself in the traditional Penfolds 'house style' after some time in the glass. Plentiful black and plummy fruit depth with hints of spice, roasting meats, soy sauce, charcuterie, Old Jamaica chocolate, licorice and earth. Tenses somewhat on the medium-length finish.

92 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion (Jul 2023)

The 2021 Shiraz Bin 28 is a little shy before building and offering broad blackberry, blackcurrant, blackberry and chocolate aromas with sweet oak in support. Supple and fleshy fruited in style with well-weighted tannins, it’s a nicely pitched South Australian Shiraz with good upfront generosity, which it will continue to hold over the short to medium term.

2021 Vina Sena Sena (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Aconcagua Valley, Chile
B-21 Top Recommendation

“One of Chile’s icon wines and deservedly so”

Wine Advocate

When visionaries Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi created Vina Sena in 1995, they embarked on a joint mission to create one of the world’s greatest red wines, and with the first taste of the perfect scoring 2021 Vina Sena, collectors and wine aficionados will enthusiastically agree: Mission Accomplished. Standing shoulder to shoulder with First Growths and cult Napa Cabs and among the most sought-after South American wines, the powerful 100 pt. 2021 Vina Sena offers fresh, decadent fruit framed with remarkable vibrant acidity on an unwavering finish, confirming its status as Chile’s premier cult wine and one to make room for in the cellar at an unbeatable value.

With a family history in the region dating back to the 1870’s beginning with Don Maximiano Errazuriz, passionate vintner Eduardo Chadwick was committed to restoring his family’s run-down 19th century estate to its former glory, inspired in the 1980’s on a visit to Chateau Margaux to create a benchmark Chilean blend that rivaled the First Growths of Bordeaux. Fast forward to 1991, when Augustin Huneeus (yes, that “other” Chilean born winemaker and the visionary behind Napa’s Quintessa) organized a trip for his friend Robert Mondavi to visit Chile and asked Eduardo to show him around. Inspired by the potential of the region’s vineyards and the success of his venture with the Rothschild’s, Mondavi partnered with Eduardo and began a four-year search for the perfect terroir to craft an “Opus One of South America” predominantly of Cabernet Sauvignon with Chile’s indigenous grape Carmenere, discovering the perfect site in the Aconcagua Valley. Boasting well-drained rocky soils of gravel and loam, the hillside 42-hectare Sena vineyard was planted in 1998 to mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and other red Bordeaux varieties as well as Carmenere, its temperatures moderated by winds off the Pacific and pure mountain water from the snowcapped Andes supplying water for the vines. After Mondavi’s death in 2003, Eduardo took over the project in its entirety, bringing the wine to global attention at the blind 2004 Berlin Tastings where wine experts ranked the Vina Sena above First Growths Chateaux Margaux and Lafite, continuing vintage over vintage to build its legendary reputation as “a compelling world class wine” according to Jeb Dunnuck. Produced in an outstanding relatively cool vintage allowing for extended hang times and slow, complete ripening of the biodynamically farmed grapes, longtime winemaker Francisco "Pancho" Baettig aged the 2021 Vina Sena for 22 months in a mix of 70% new French oak barrels with 10% in larger foudres, marking his last harvest as Sena’s winemaker and yielding a finessed and perfectly balanced blend with lush, refined tannins and an exceptional potential for aging.

Delivering on Eduardo Chadwick’s goal to craft “a unique Bordeaux style blend with a very Chilean soul,” the enticing 100 pt. 2021 Vina Sena is a remarkably elegant wine that James Suckling notes is “traded around the world like Bordeaux’s First Growths,” at a mere fraction of the price, a rare opportunity to enjoy terroir-driven perfection for less than many entry level Napa Cabs and a “mission” that collectors of the world’s greatest red wines will be glad they accepted.

100JS #3 Top 100 98WA

An extremely pure and elegant vintage for Seña. This is really fresh, nimble and floral on the nose with subtle cherries, plums, redcurrants and wild lavender. More red fruit here with lots of layers and just a touch of sweet spice. Very discreet and subtle, with the elegance, freshness and poise you’d expect from 2021. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate with a bit more flesh and depth if you compare it with Roca de Seña, their second wine. The impeccable tannins show the supreme quality of the fruit this year. Persistent, seamless finish, but comes in a subtle way. 50% cabernet sauvignon, 27% malbec, 17% carmenere and 6% petit verdot. Effortlessly drinkable now, but it will age beautifully.

100 points, Zekun Shuai, James Suckling (Apr 2023)

#3 - James Suckling Top 100 of 2023

One of the finest vintages of the iconic Seña wine, the 2021 Seña comes from a cooler year, following the path of 2016 and 2018, certainly cooler than 2020 and 2019. It has a super expressive nose that is elegant, nuanced, perfumed, subtle and pure, with aromatic finesse, layered and complex. It was picked a couple of weeks later than in the previous two years and still keeping the alcohol below 14%. It was produced with a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Malbec (cooler years with more), 17% Carmenere and 6% Petit Verdot, fermented mostly in stainless steel and 10% in oak foudre. It's fine-grained and structured but juicy, similar to 2018 but with more finesse. It has the spicy/herbal twist from the Cabernet, ultra-refined tannins that give it great elegance and with length, purity and delineation. Superb! 120,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2023.

A delicious everyday white wine from veteran California vintner Bruce Neyers, the fresh and juicy 92 pt. 2022 Neyers 304 Chardonnay offers crisp, aromatic stone fruit and citrus with bright acidity on a mouthwatering mineral finish, an outstanding value for fans of unoaked California Chardonnay and anyone seeking an easy drinking, food-friendly white to stock the cooler at a bargain price.

Founded in 1992 by Bruce and Barbara Neyers just off the Silverado Trail, Neyers Vineyards crafts its classically styled Chardonnay with minimal intervention winemaking inspired by Bruce’s experience as national sales manager for Berkley-based importer Kermit Lynch, his 25-year tenure earning him the praise as “one of America’s greatest wine men” from Lynch upon his retirement in 2017. Initially hiring legendary Napa winemaker Ehren Jordan to oversee the construction of a new winery and craft the first Neyers wines, Bruce was inspired by his experience with Chablis producers to create the Neyers 304 Chardonnay cuvee without the use of oak, the name “304” an insider reference to the grade of stainless steel used in the winery’s aging tanks. Sourced from the family-owned Paul Larson Vineyard in Carneros, the Chardonnay vines are planted in a rocky outcropping that yields smaller, more concentrated clusters and enhances minerality, while the cooling maritime influence of San Pablo Bay preserves the grapes’ freshness and acidity. Produced from a low-yielding Sonoma vintage marked by “elegance, purity, and wonderful definition” according to Jeb Dunnuck’s Audrey Frick, longtime winemaker Tadeo Borchardt fermented the grapes with native yeasts before aging the crisp and refreshing 2022 Neyers 304 Chardonnay in stainless steel for four months on the lees, yielding fresh, bright fruit with a subtle, creamy texture and well-balanced acidity on a deliciously vibrant finish.

Among the best values in unoaked California Chardonnay, the impressive 92 pt. 2022 Neyers 304 Chardonnay remains lesser known among the region’s high-profile producers while overdelivering value, a top-scoring, ready to enjoy Chardonnay affordably priced for stocking up by the case.

A transparent and clear young Pauillac with blackcurrant, mushroom, chocolate, and wet earth. Full-bodied, layered and flavorful with fine, velvety tannins. Plenty of graphite and blue fruit at the end. Drink after 2027.

96 points, James Suckling (May 2023)

The 2020 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse is a brilliant, powerful, age-worthy Pauillac that will reward bottle age. Blackcurrants, tobacco, cedar pencil, and chocolate are just some of its nuances, and this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a dense, mouth-filling texture, plenty of ripe tannins, and outstanding length. It's not the most elegant Pauillac out there, but it has quintessential aromatics, structure, and density, and is beautifully done, as well as incredibly satisfying. It will probably take a decade of bottle age to hit maturity, and it should have 30-40 years of overall longevity. Tasted three times.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

The 2020 Grand Puy Ducasse is elegant, polished and sophisticated, just as it was en primeur. Dark cherry, mocha, licorice and crushed rose petals are some of the many notes that open up. Medium in body, with terrific energy and tons of class, Grand Puy Ducasse is very pretty and especially refined in 2020.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2023)

Flows wonderfully from the start, with an already accessible feel to the mix of cassis and dark blackberry notes inlaid with singed alder, warm paving stone, tobacco leaf and graphite accents that then carry the finish. In the end, there's no rush at all here. A pretty gorgeous Pauillac. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2025 through 2038. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 10,733 cases made, 338 cases imported.

Described as “an absolute delight” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the alluring 93 pt. 2022 Bedrock Zinfandel Old Vine reveals fresh, aromatic brambly red fruit layered with juicy acidity and integrated, firm tannins, sourced from some of California’s most iconic old vine vineyards and a top value bargain-priced for Zinfandel lovers to enjoy often.

Established in 2007 by the son of Ravenswood founding winemaker Joel Peterson, Bedrock Wine Company’s Morgan Twain-Peterson and long-time business partner Chris Cottrell craft their wines from a who’s who list of the region’s most historic vineyards, sourcing the old vine Zinfandel from centuries’ old sites throughout Sonoma and Contra Costa counties including the Peterson’s own Bedrock Vineyard. Described by Antonio Galloni as “among the most pedigreed vineyard sites anywhere in the world,” Bedrock was the first California vineyard to be replanted in 1888 following the devastation of phylloxera, boasting a Zinfandel-dominated field mix planted in volcanic rocks and cobbly loam soil and farmed organically by the Peterson's without irrigation. Blending 85% Zinfandel with 7% Carignan, 4% Cinsault and small amounts of other varieties averaging 80 years of age and fermenting with native yeasts, Morgan aged the lush 2022 Bedrock Zinfandel Old Vine in a combination of French oak and Austrian oak puncheons and foudres with about 10% new, yielding a fresh and delicately spiced Zinfandel with layered fine tannins that’s ready to enjoy and will continue to mature gracefully over the next few years.

Crafted by “one of the most talented winemakers of his generation” according to Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, the impressive 93 pt. 2022 Bedrock Zinfandel Old Vine is blended from many of the iconic sites that go into Bedrock’s single vineyard Zins at a fraction of their price, delivering a transparent expression of rich, old vine Zinfandel at an unbeatable value price.

Fans of lush Paso Robles Cabs seeking a solid value need look no further than the richly textured 93 pt. 2021 Provenance Deadeye Cabernet Sauvignon, an appealing, juicy Cab from an outstanding Central Coast vintage with balanced tannins and a silky, polished finish, bargain priced for everyday enjoyment.

Considered one of the best ever years by Paso Robles growers according to James Suckling, the 2021 vintage was defined by even temperatures with the absence of major heat spikes in an extended growing season, enjoying a combination of long, sunny days and high temperatures that enhanced flavor development and encouraged optimal ripening. While “continued drought led to lower yields from smaller clusters and berries but also concentrated flavors” according to the Wine Advocate’s Erin Larkin, the cooling effect of Pacific Ocean breezes flowing through the Templeton Gap resulted in lower nighttime temperatures, allowing the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to retain their natural acidity. Harvesting at night to preserve freshness, winemaker Noel Basso aged the plush 2021 Provenance Deadeye Cabernet Sauvignon in a combination of 20% toast and neutral American oak barrels, yielding fresh, aromatic dark fruit with exceptional richness resulting from the small, drought affected berries, balanced by mineral-laced acidity and finishing with pleasing notes of citrusy spice.

Among the top-rated Paso Cabs from an outstanding vintage, the smooth and ready to drink 93 pt. 2021 Provenance Deadeye Cabernet Sauvignon delivers one of the region’s top values, a delicious and thoroughly satisfying Cab certain to thrill Paso Robles fans and any California Cab lover seeking an outstanding value to enjoy often

2020 Domaine La Colliere La Fontaine (750ml)

B-21 Top Recommendation

Among the most stellar values in all the Southern Rhone, the fresh and full-bodied 2020 Domaine La Colliere La Fontaine boasts fragrant, vibrant fruit hinting of spiced pepper and Provencal garrigue with underlying minerality and soft, supple tannins, a beautifully crafted Rasteau from lesser known artisan producer and B-21 favorite displaying the depth and allure of age worthy Chateauneuf du Pape at a fraction of the price.

Once a protege of legendary Rhone winemaker Andre Romero of Domaine Soumade, Georges Perrot has forged his own path in Rasteau over the last two decades, crafting aromatic and bright wines in the fresh and elegant style pioneered by his mentor while forgoing the region’s over-extracted and often rustic style. Establishing Domaine la Colliere in 2002, Georges and his wife Delphine organically farm 30 plots spanning 25 hectares in the shadow of the famed Dentelles de Montmirail in Vaucluse , sourcing the 2020 La Fontaine from steep, south facing vineyards at altitudes around 160 meters with vines ranging over 75 years of age planted in pebbly soils rich in blue clay. A blend of mostly Grenache with smaller amounts of Mourvedre and Syrah, Georges ferments the grapes separately in stainless steel tanks, aging them for 15 months in custom made cement tanks except for the Mourvedre which goes into massive demi-muid barrels, yielding fresh, polished fruit layered with harmonious tannins on a long and balanced finish and promising to age gracefully for upwards of a decade.

Described by Robert Parker Jr. as “one of the most talented owners in Rasteau” over a decade ago but remaining largely unknown, Georges Perrot’s impressive, small production 2020 Domaine la Colliere La Fontaine is an astonishingly elegant, age worthy, and affordable Rasteau that will reward Southern Rhone fans and collectors over the next decade, overdelivering at a value price that makes it an easy call to stock up and reach for without hesitation. “The 2020 Clos Floridene is terrific. Bright and punchy to the core”

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Built on the legacy of one of Bordeaux’s most esteemed winemakers, the appealing 93 pt. 2020 Clos Floridene Rouge boasts vibrant elegant fruit flavors hinting of savory herbs with layered, substantial tannins, named by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson as one of her Top 20 Great Value Bordeaux of the outstanding 2020 vintage and offered at an amazing under $20 price for stocking up to enjoy without hesitation.

Part of a family-run portfolio which also includes famed Sauternes producer Chateau Doisy Daene, Clos Floridene was established by the iconic enologist Denis Dubourdieu in 1982 with a small 2 hectare plot, the name coming from combining Denis and his wife Florence’s names and now run by his two sons, Jean-Jacques and Fabrice since his passing in 2016. Described by Forbes as a “titan in the world of wine,” Denis is renowned for revolutionizing the production of the white wines of Bordeaux and consulting for some of Bordeaux’s and the world’s most prestigious wineries including Cheval Blanc, Haut-Bailly, Burgundy’s Jadot and Piedmont’s Pio Cesare, his reputation for exceptionalism causing the critic Robert Parker Jr. to declare that anything associated with Dubourdieu’s name “is of undeniably high, high quality.” Located mostly on the limestone plateau of Pujols sur Ciron near Barsac, the Clos Floridene vineyards span 40 hectares, with 17.3 hectares of vines for the Rouge planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon and about a quarter Merlot in a mix of gravel, clay and limestone, farmed using organic practices that the Dubourdieu’s describe as ‘grown like a garden.’ A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot in the 2020 vintage, winemaker Jean-Jacques aged the 2020 Clos Floridene Rouge for 12 months in a third new French oak barrels in the Chateau’s new state of the art winery, yielding lush, expressive fruit with fresh, energetic tannins that will continue to evolve over the next years in the cellar.

From “an incredibly exciting vintage” according to critic Antonio Galloni that’s “brimming with phenomenal wines at all levels,” the exceptional 93 pt. 2020 Clos Floridene reflects the rich legacy of its founder Denis Dubourdieu, crafted with high quality fruit and expert attention to detail and a top 2020 Bordeaux value in original wooden cases of six ready to cellar and enjoy.

This is tasty, with an appealing smack of damson, black cherry, cocoa bean, cola, liquorice and fennel. Described by Eric Guido of Vinous as “benchmarks in the region,” the 94 pt. 2019 Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and the 95 pt. 2018 Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Sotto Casa Riserva layer richly aromatic and vibrant Sangiovese fruit with polished, elegant tannins, two enticing, terroir-driven gems delivering outstanding value and promising fans of bold Tuscan reds years of enjoyment.

Located near the picturesque hillside village of Montepulciano near the southern border of Chianti Classico, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano has a long history of producing exceptional Sangiovese wines dating back over five centuries in the region, in recent years shedding its underdog reputation in the shadows of its higher profile Tuscan neighbors by focusing on the “natural translucence and expressivity of Sangiovese” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous. Established in the early 1960’s and now run by third generation brothers Luca and Nicolo De Ferrari, Boscarelli sources their Vino Nobile wines from 18 hectares of estate vineyards in Cervognano at around 300 meters above sea level, planted mostly to Sangiovese with smaller amounts of indigenous varietals as well as parcels of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Described by Decanter’s Michaela Morris as “simply one of the best straight up Vino Nobiles I have tasted,” the elegant 94 pt. 2019 Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montepulciano was aged in a mix of French and Slavonian oak barrels for 18-24 months with six months more in bottle, yielding ripe, bright fruit “with fine balance and a lingering finish” according to the Wine Spectator’s Bruce Sanderson. A blend of 80% Sangiovese with 12% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon harvested and fermented separately, the opulent 95 pt. 2018 Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Sotto Casa Riserva matured in a mix of 5 to 40-hectoliter French oak casks for 24 -30 months, described as “spicy and perfumed” with “a salty mineral underpinning” by Eric Guido of Vinous with lush, harmonious tannins built to evolve over a decade.

Among “some of the most beautiful wines in the appellation” according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, the 94 pt. 2019 Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and the 95 pt. 2018 Boscarelli Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Sotto Casa Riserva are deeply satisfying and elegant Vino Nobiles, summed up by Vinous critic Antonio Galloni as “wines of real character that also offer tremendous quality for the money” and a sure bet for Italian wine lovers seeking meticulously crafted, long-lived Tuscan reds that overdeliver value.

Boscarelli is located in the revered area of Cervognano. Established in 1962, it's now run by third-generation brothers Luca and Nicolò De Ferrari, who have gradually been replanting the vineyards since 1987. The gorgeous 2016 Vino Nobile includes local blending varieties, Canaiolo Nero, Colorino and Mammolo. A spectrum of enticing aromas greets the nose, from rose, violets and wild cherry to sage and thyme. Elegant, savoury and deceptively light on its feet, the palate proposes sweet yet tangy fruit with layers of finessed, powdery tannin. This superb wine is just at the start of its evolution.

94 points, Michaela Morris, Decanter (Feb 2019)

An understated Vino Nobile with discreet minerals, spiced plums, cumin and tarry savoriness that needs some time to pull together and open up further. Quite nicely chewy and tight, with a full-bodied palate and a clean, mineral finish. A little demanding now, but shows potential. Try after 2024.

The Boscarelli 2019 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano opens immediately to red and purple fruits, but the wine also has an ethereal side with cola, licorice and grilled herb. A gorgeous wine, the 2019 Château Pédesclaux shines for its pure, elegant, yet concentrated style, and it's certainly one of the finest vintages from this address. Cassis, black cherries, lead pencil, and violet notes all emerge on the nose, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a seamless, elegant mouthfeel, ripe, polished tannins, and a great finish. The purity and finesse are truly something here, and while it already offers pleasure, it deserves 4-5 years of bottle age and will evolve for 20+ years.

94+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

This is really floral and beautiful with lavender, lilac and blackcurrant aromas that follow through to a medium to full body with firm, creamy tannins and a flavorful finish. It’s very racy and refined with structure. Linear. 72% cabernet sauvignon, 20% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot. Best after 2024.

The 2019 Pédesclaux is quirky and full of character. It offers a beguiling mix of super-ripe dark fruit and savory Cabernet coupled with accents that offer a striking counterpoint. Black cherry, chocolate, new leather, spice, tobacco, incense and scorched earth lead into the substantial finish. There's more raciness than finesse in this Pauillac, but it all works well.

“A huge, opulent wine”

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

From the award winning Tuscan estate producing “some of the best wines in Chianti Classico” according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, the fresh and expressive 94 pt. 2019 Tolaini Valdisanti offers aromatic dark, sumptuous fruit hinting of earthy spice with vibrant acidity and velvety mouth coating tannins, a luxurious 50-50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cab Franc built to age for nearly two decades and value priced well below its pedigree to reach for often.

Located between Siena and Florence in the hills of Castelnuovo Berardenga, the entry to the spectacular Tolaini estate is marked by massive stone lions and surrounded by meticulous gardens and gravel paths with rows of the towering cypress trees emblematic of the rolling Tuscan countryside. Leaving his native Tuscany in 1956 in search of fortune, founder Pier Luigi Tolaini built one of North America’s largest transport companies over the next 40 years before returning to the Chianti Classico region to make wine and purchasing 25 hectares just north of Siena in 1998. Employing state of the art technology and top viticultural experts including famed enologist Michel Rolland to determine the optimal site for each type of grape, the estate’s 50 hectares of organically certified vineyards are planted with a mix of international varietals as well as the indigenous Sangiovese in the region’s sandy, stony soils known as “tufa." Situated high in the Berardenga hills, the 2019 Tolaini Valdisanti is sourced from the estate’s sustainably farmed Tenuta San Giovanni Vineyard, the vines tended by hand to maintain low yields and allow the grapes to reach optimal ripeness. Crafted under the direction of famed consultant Luca D’Attoma, whose clients include Tua Rita and Allegrini’s Poggio al Tesoro in Bolgheri, winemaker Francesco Rosi aged the robust 2019 Tolaini Valdisanti for 16 months in French oak barriques with 6 months on the lees before bottling it unfiltered and aging it for 12 months more, yielding a “balanced and harmonious” red according to the Wine Spectator’s Bruce Sanderson with bright acidity and smooth, integrated tannins promising a long-lived evolution.

Ranked on the Wine Enthusiast’s list of The Best Super Tuscan Wines of 2019 alongside Solaia and Tignanello, the elegant 94 pt. 2019 Tolaini Valdisanti impeccably balances savory ripe, dark fruit and softly layered tannins as a unique expression of its southern Chianti Classico terroir, an impressive value promising to reward Super Tuscan fans who stock the cellar with over a decade of pleasurable drinking ahead.

The Tolaini 2019 Valdisanti is quite generous and rich, with thick layers of dark fruit, black cherry, pencil shaving, tar and licorice. This is a proud and beautiful Tuscan red with an ample 70,000 bottles on the market.

94 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Feb 2023)

Pretty aromas and flavors of currants, asphalt and bark fill the glass. It’s medium-to full-bodied with creamy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Unfiltered. Drink in 2024 and onwards.

94 points, James Suckling (Aug 2022)

A polished red, this offers plum, blackberry, black currant, leather and a hint of wild herb aromas and flavors. Balanced and harmonious, with refined tannins gracing the long, iron-tinged finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2024 through 2040. 4,200 cases made, 3,000 cases imported.

A don't miss wine, this has wonderfully powerful fruits delivered with class and character. The abundant tannins have slate-edged grip and the black cassis and bilberry fruits sit alongside waves of oyster shell, liqourice, sage and black pepper. Delivers depth and personality and an effortless Margaux finesse. Harvest September 23 to October 2. Marjolaine de Coninck technical director, owner Nathalie Perrodo.

96 points, Jane Anson (Mar 2023)

The 2020 Château Marquis D'Alesme Becker showed well, and this tiny Margaux estate continues to producer fabulous wines under the helm of Marjolaine de Coninck. Based on 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, it has a juicy, medium-bodied, round, even sexy style that carries lots of cassis and assorted darker, blue fruits, notes of spicy wood, flowers, and violet, soft tannins, terrific balance, and great finish. Coming from a mix of gravelly, sandy soils and aged in 50% new French oak, this beauty hit 14% natural alcohol (no doubt helped by the large Merlot component) and is going to benefit from just a few years of bottle age. It's going to see its 20th birthday in fine form.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

The 2020 Marquis d'Alesme is matured in 50% new oak and was bottled a little later than other châteaux. It has a crisp bouquet with redcurrant, white-tipped strawberry, cedar and crushed violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine and quite saturated tannins, mainly black fruit tinged with spice, smooth in texture with a touch of piquancy towards the finish. It is persistent and it blossoms in the glass. Very fine.

“The wonderful combination of refinement and power”

James Suckling

Described by Decanter as “one of Bordeaux's most refined first growths,” the elegant Chateau Margaux is a seductive charmer built on powerful Cabernet Sauvignon, this trio of captivating 100 pt. vintages offering rich enticing fruit with Margaux’s signature floral aromatics and dense, silky tannins built for decades of aging, delivered in perfect provenance at best on the market pricing.

Approached on an enchanting tree lined drive leading up to impressive iron gates, the magnificent Chateau Margaux is housed in a neo-Palladian building designed by famed Bordeaux architect Louis Combes, its two-story columns inspired by the Pantheon and surrounded by a small village that includes an onsite cooperage and a start of the art winery designed to blend seamlessly with the 17th century Chateaux. Showing an unwavering commitment to Margaux for over four decades, owner Corinne Menzelopoulos began working with legendary consulting enologist Emile Peynaud in the 1980’s to dramatically improve quality at her family’s estate, lowering yields and implementing stricter selection with only about a third of production making the cut for the Grand Vin. Managed by director Philippe Bascaules since 2017, the 82 hectare vineyard is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon in some of “the poorest gravel soils in the appellation” according to Bordeaux expert Jane Anson, protected from frost by its proximity to the Gironde Estuary and surrounded by newly planted trees to increase biodiversity. Aged in 100% new French oak, the Wine Independent’s Lisa Perrotti-Brown calls the luxurious 100 pt. 2018 Chateau Margaux “a classic Margaux at its most seductive, while Antonio Galloni describes it as “dense and explosive in the glass,” summing it up as “a dramatic wine that will thrill readers lucky enough to own it.” Described as “quite stunning” by Neal Martin of Vinous, the breathtaking 100 pt. 2019 Chateau Margaux offers “a strikingly vibrant core of fruit” that’s “complex, elegant and utterly compelling” according to the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley with “a wonderful balance of having an immediate drinking appeal but also the structure, power and density to age” according to Decanter’s Georgina Hindle. Declared “a Margaux for the ages” by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson, the alluring 100 pt. 2020 Chateau Margaux reveals “supple and plentiful tannins that have no intention of relinquishing their hold for decades to come” according to critic Anson, described as boasting “remarkable purity as well as flawless balance” by Jeb Dunnuck who declares “I love everything about this wine.”

Elegantly expressing “the quintessence of terroir” according to the Wine Advocate, these alluring 100 pt. Chateau Margaux vintages offer a rare opportunity to acquire perfectly rated Bordeaux directly from the Chateau for a fortunate few, promising to reward a little patient cellaring and echoing the words of Jeb Dunnuck ready to “blow you away any time over the coming 40+ years.”

100WA 100JD 100JS 100WI 98V 98WS 98WE 98D

The 2018 Château Margaux is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, representing 36% of the crop this year. The wine has a pH of 3.8 and 14% alcohol. Deep purple-black in color, it slowly unfurls to reveal tantalizing scents of crème de cassis, wild blueberries and Black Forest cake with hints of redcurrant jelly, rose oil, dark chocolate and cedar chest plus a touch of star anise. The medium to full-bodied palate bursts with opulent black fruit, fragrant earth and floral layers, supported by a rock-solid structure of exquisitely ripe, finely grained tannins and seamless backbone of freshness, finishing with fantastic length. This is classic Margaux at its most seductive, although it is, rather amazingly, approachable and absolutely delicious right now. But, to enjoy its full glory, you will want to cellar it for at least 6-8 years and then watch it metamorphize over the next 40+ years.

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Adovcate (Mar 2021)

Based on 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% each of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2018 Château Margaux is a magical, incredibly sexy expression of this Château that sports a dense purple color as well as a thrilling bouquet of blueberries, cassis, acacia flowers, scorched earth, sandalwood, and violets. Incredibly concentrated and full-bodied on the palate, it nevertheless has an almost Burgundian sense of finesse and elegance, with an ethereal texture, silky yet massive amounts of tannins, notable freshness, and brilliant length. The alcohol hit a whopping 14%, which is high by this estate's standards, but everything is flawlessly integrated, the balance is perfect, and I certainly can't find anything that could be better. This 2018 is going to be relatively drinkable at an early age (do your best to hide bottles for 7-8 years) yet last for 75+.

100 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

So much ash, tobacco and earth to the bright blackberry and currant aromas. Flowers too. Fresh. Full-bodied with seamless tannins that spread across your palate and caress every square centimeter. It’s shows loads of ripe-berry, cherry, currant and chocolate character, as well as walnut and light cedar. Then the finish goes on for minutes. Extremely refined and elegant, despite the structure. 90% cabernet sauvignon, 4% cabernet franc, 4% merlot and 2% petit verdot. A joy to taste, but drink after 2025.

100 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Chateau Margaux is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, with the first wine representing 37% of the harvest. Deep purple-black colored, it needs considerable coaxing to release scents of plum preserves, blueberry compote, and ripe blackcurrants, leading to nuances of violets, cedar chest, pencil shavings, wood smoke, and wet slate with a waft of black truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is simply electric, with a firework display of mineral earth and black fruits and super-fine, firm, tannins, plus incredible tension, finishing with epic length and depth. "I'm surprised by the body," commented winemaker Philippe Bascaules as we tasted together. "During primeurs, the 2019 was full of charm. Now it is more concentrated, more powerful." Indeed.

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Apr 2022)

The 2018 Margaux is an infant. Today, the tannins are unusually searing, but then again, the 2018 is a wine in which all the elements are dialed up to the maximum. Time in the glass releases the fruit, revealing a luxurious, opulent Château Margaux built for the cellar. Cedar, tobacco, dried flowers and mint develop with a bit of coaxing. Rich, deep and utterly beguiling, the 2018 is a dramatic wine that will thrill readers lucky enough to own it.

98+ points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

This struts along with supreme confidence, as a cashmere-textured structure effortlessly carries a prodigious set of warmed cassis, plum reduction and blackberry compote flavors, pulling in alder, bergamot, black and red tea and iron notes. Still manages to come across as restrained in the end. A beautiful wine. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2028 through 2040. 10,833 cases made.

98 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2021)

While this wine reflects the richness and density of the vintage, it also shows all the elegance of which a great Margaux is capable. The wine is powerful and beautifully structured, both ripe and restrained. It will age magnificently. Start to think about drinking from 2028.

98 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2021)

This is extremely powerful, with high tannin levels that are beautifully velvety and a real presence that is going to need a good 15 years before it softens. There are layers and layers of subtlety here, charcoal, earth, fresh acidity - a ton of serious character that needs time to inch towards opening. Grips on like a limpet - this needs a good half an hour in the glass to even begin to open, but as it does so you see clearly the finesse and precision of the fruit construction. Exceptionally good. 3.64pH, 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend, 36% of the harvest in the first wine. Bottled mid-September.

Cassis, black raspberries, tobacco, spicy wood, and beautiful floral notes all emerge from the 2020 Château Ripeau, a seamless, medium to full-bodied beauty with perfectly integrated oak, an elegant, layered mouthfeel, polished tannins, and a great finish. It's up with the finest vintages I've tasted from this estate and does everything right. It's already accessible given its purity and balance, yet I see no reason this shouldn't evolve nicely for a solid two decades.

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

The 2020 Ripeau has a slight reduction on the nose, but there is real complexity and terroir expression underneath, with sous-bois and light Earl Grey scents. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a fine bead of acidity, fresh and slightly savory, almost Pomerol-like on the finish. Bravo!

94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Feb 2023)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2020 Ripeau charges out with vibrant blueberries, black cherries, and raspberry preserves scents, followed by hints of cedar chest and iron ore with an earthy charcoal waft. Full-bodied, the palate is packed with red and black berry preserves layers, lifted by spicy cedar and toast notes, finishing long and hedonic.

A brilliant wine from a great vintage in St Julien, rich, silky and utterly delicious. Espresso, cocoa, creamy blackberry and cassis, with juicy depths, spellbinding, concentrated and full of charm and character. 45% new oak. Remi di Constanzo technical director.

This is poised and elegant with notes of bitter chocolate, crushed walnuts, black peppercorns, blackberries and blackcurrants. It’s medium-bodied with silky tannins and layers of fresh black fruit. Classy. Try from 2026.

Tobacco, dark chocolate and scented flowers on the nose - beautiful aromatic display. Ripe and concentrated fruit but with clarity and precision alongside savoury elements of coffee, cola and creamy blackcurrants. Is the 2019 Château Margaux the wine of the vintage? A strong case in its favor could certainly be made. Soaring from the glass with aromas of blackberries, raspberries, rose petals, violets, pencil shavings and vine smoke, it's full-bodied, layered and sensual, with a strikingly vibrant core of fruit that's framed by ripe, powdery tannins and bright acids, concluding with a penetrating, mouthwateringly saline finish of almost interminable duration. Complex, elegant and utterly compelling, this is a brilliant Bordeaux that anyone with the requisite disposable income is going to want to own.

100 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Chateau Margaux is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, with the first wine representing 37% of the harvest. Deep purple-black colored, it needs considerable coaxing to release scents of plum preserves, blueberry compote, and ripe blackcurrants, leading to nuances of violets, cedar chest, pencil shavings, wood smoke, and wet slate with a waft of black truffles. The 2019 Château Margaux possesses off the charts richness to go along with plush contours and mind-blowing balance. All the elements are so wonderfully woven together. It's as if all the Château Margaux signatures are dialed up to eleven, but without losing any of the classic Margaux character. The purity of the red-toned fruit is just breathtaking. The Merlot was picked early, but then rain during harvest delayed the ripening of the Cabernets, which turned out to be a huge advantage. Estate Manager Philippe Bascaules and his team turned out two spectacular wines in 2019. Bascaules describes 2019 as an easy vintage. Flowering was normal and set was good. Yields came in at a healthy 47 hectoliters per hectare, more than 2017 or 2018, the summer heat spikes notwithstanding. Bascaules opted to pick the Merlot early and gave those lots very gentle extractions at low temperatures, whereas the Cabernet Sauvignon vinifications were a much more typical 20-22 days at 28-30 degrees Celsius. In tasting, the 2019s have more tannins than any other vintage, with the exception of 2018, and yet the wines don't show that at all. The bottled wines are every bit as impressive as the barrel samples.

A blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2016 Chateau Margaux is deep garnet-purple in color. It is a real struggle to shake loose the aromas, this is so shut down at the moment. Eventually, notes of crème de cassis, blackberry pie, and blueberry compote begin to emerge, followed by licorice, dark chocolate, cumin seed, truffles, and iron ore suggestions. Full-bodied and full-on rich and seductive, the palate is absolutely crammed with bright, crunchy black fruit layers, framed by astonishingly ripe, finely grained tannins and amazing tension, finishing with a firework display of minerals, flowers, and exotic spices. Sell your car and get a few cases of this - you won't regret it!

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Dec 2022)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Château Margaux (blended of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot) sashays out of the glass with glamorous red currants, candied violets, kirsch and crushed blackcurrants scents followed by notions of tilled black soil, forest floor, cast iron pan and cigar box with subtle wafts of lavender and oolong tea. Medium-bodied, mineral laced accents hover over the palate with an ethereal sensation of weightlessness, yet it is super intense with layers of red and black flavors supported by a firm texture of silt-fine tannins, finishing wonderfully fragrant and incredibly long.

99 points, Wine Advocate (Nov 2018)

With a rare 94% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, this wine is packed both with black-currant flavors and impressive tannins and acidity. It moves Château Margaux into a new dimension with its dense, dry core of tannins that will power the wine into a seriously long-term future. Drink from 2025.

99 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2019)

It’s very friendly and warm on the nose showing flowers, such as roses, and red fruit. But then on the palate, it lets you know how serious it is. Full-bodied, yet reserved, extremely tight and well-formed with super polished tannins that go on for minutes. A solid and typical Margaux with all the personality and beauty in strength. Try after 2027.

99 points, James Suckling (Dec 2019)

Showing consistently and from a bottle purchased locally and drunk over multiple days, the 2016 Château Margaux is a magical wine that tastes like the essence of Margaux. Red and black currants, blueberries, spring flowers, sandalwood, and crushed violet notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a pure, elegant, seamless profile, gorgeous concentration, and a great finish. The level of freshness, purity, and precision paired with concentration and intensity is truly something to behold. It has some accessibility even today, yet it's going to take another decade for this to come close to the early stages of its prime drinking window. It's going to be a 50-75+ year wine.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2023)

The 2016 Château Margaux has an intense bouquet of blackberry, briar, crushed stone and subtle cedar aromas that enrapture the senses; hints of pencil box and sous-bois emerge with time. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and a touch of bitterness lends tension on the finish. Impressive – very impressive. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting.

This was phenomenal from barrel and remains so. The aromas are spellbinding. It smells like a bouquet of pink roses and then goes to currants, berries and citrus. Full body, with wonderfully refined tannins. It starts discretely and then grows to different levels and dimensions like a slow but big high tide. The texture is so beautiful. Try it in 2020 or beyond.

100 points, James Suckling (Feb 2013)

Deep garnet in color, the 2010 Château Margaux features notions of minted blackcurrants, new leather and Black Forest cake with nuances of sautéed herbs, tar, underbrush and wild fungi plus a waft of cedar. Full-bodied, the palate has a rock-solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness supporting the taut, muscular fruit, finishing long and earthy.

98+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2020)

Reminding me slightly of the 1996 (and maybe the 2019) with its purity and precision, the 2010 Château Margaux offers a classic bouquet of red and black currants, green tobacco, sandalwood, spring flowers, and lead pencil shavings. Rich, full-bodied, and beautifully concentrated on the palate, with ripe tannin and integrated yet notable acidity, this is as classic and regal as Margaux gets, and while it has a terrific sweetness of fruit and ripeness to its tannins, it needs another 4-5 years to hit true prime time and is going to evolve for another 30 years or more.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2022)

Liquid velvet, with stunning length and a caressing mouthfeel, as layers of creamed plum, blackberry coulis and steeped black currant fruit glides along, seamlessly intertwined with black tea, mulled blood orange, incense and lilac. Hints of mesquite and alder hang subtly in the background, and the structure, evident and massive, has melded wonderfully.—Non-blind Château Margaux vertical (December 2013). Best from 2018 through 2040. 10,833 cases made.

98 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Nov 2014)

A great wine that is just starting out. The high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend gives the structured, black currant character. Dark chocolate and layers of wood are forward, revealing how young the wine is. And then the fruit, so rich and powerful, brings deliciousness to the firm, dense structure. Age for many years.

98 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2013)

The remarkable thing about the tannins of this 2010 Château Margaux is that they feel more plush and velvety than the 2nd wine at this stage - almost more ready to drink. A brilliant wine, dense yet light on its feet, aromatic and seductive, soft leather, cedar, sandalwood, Christmas spice and blackberry notes, with violet notes and a gunsmoke curl. Margaux du Château Margaux was in its second vintage at this point, and by adding this 3rd wine, they tightened up selection across the board even further, with 38% of grapes making their way to the 1st wine. 100% new oak. Paul Pontallier director.

98 points, Jane Anson (Jun 2022)

Fresh and youthful aromas of understated curranty fruit with cedar, smoke, and spice accents lead to a silky, archetypical Margaux texture with silky tannins, perfect weight, balance, and impressive length. The edges of this wine - so evident en primeur - are now pleasantly rounded and supple, but there is no mistaking the power and ageability of this triumphant vintage. The wine is a blend of 90% Cabernet and 7% Merlot; picking began with the latter on 22 September.

2021 Vina Sena Sena (1.5L)

Gorgeous aromas of dark plums and violets. Orange peel, too. Some crushed stone. Bark. Stems. Iron shavings. Full-bodied, but very tight and compacted. The tannins are all here making it very structured, yet they are polished and melted together. Needs years to show all of its greatness. Incredible polish and structure. More structured than the 2019. Try after 2030 and beyond.

100 points, James Suckling (May 2023)

This has grip and poise, it edges forward with slate textured tannins, not givin too much away at first, but sit with it, because the future brilliance of this Margaux is there to be seen if you take your time. It displays a seriousness of intent that sets it apart in expression from vintages like the 2018, and has dense and powerful red and black fruits along with supple and plentiful tannins that have no intention of relinquishing their hold for decades to come. Gingerbread, liqourice root, grilled sandalwood, red peppers, mint leaf and peony flowers add waves of complexity as it widens and softens through the mid palate, along with raspberry puree and edges of patisserie cream. A Margaux for the ages. 100% new oak, 36hl/h yield after the dry summer.

100 points, Jane Anson (Feb 2023)

The 2020 Chateau Margaux is deep garnet-purple in color. After a couple of swirls, notions of blackcurrant pastilles, redcurrant jelly, and juicy black plums soar from the glass, leading to underlying suggestions of dark chocolate, candied violets, cast-iron pan, and forest floor. The medium-bodied palate is satiny smooth, vibrant, and energetic, featuring floral, mineral, and black fruit layers, finishing very long and shimmery. Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for 89% of the blend, completed by 8% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc.

99 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Mar 2023)

The 2020 Margaux Grand Vin is ravishing. At once refined and exuberant, Margaux beautifully captures the spirit of the vintage. Layers of dark fruit, spice, lavender, crushed flowers and leather open graciously, revealing a wine of uncommon depth and finesse. The 100% new oak is not at all perceptible. Enveloping on the palate, with striking resonance and exceptional balance, the 2020 is very clearly a great modern Margaux. It's a brilliant effort from Margaux and the team led by Managing Director Philippe Bascaules.

This is a big wine, smoky and rich. With a higher proportion of Petit Verdot than in the past, it offers complexity and bold black fruits. The wine is structured while always ripe and generous. Drink this magnificent wine from 2028.
