2022 Etude Pinot Noir Estate Grace Benoist Ranch (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Carneros, California
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Pinot Noir is a big deal in California, and while places like Sonoma, Santa Cruz, and Santa Barbara are at the front of everyone's minds, Carneros is the original cool climate AVA in California. Situated at the very south of Napa Valley, it's completely exposed to the influence of nearby San Pablo bay, and the potential for great Pinot Noir and Chardonnay has been established here for decades.

One of the long-time, mainstay benchmarks for top-tier Carneros Pinot Noir is Etude, whose home estate of Grace Benoist ranch is one of the most historic vineyard properties in California. Originally founded and put on the map by the legendary Tony Soter, Etude has been under the direction of the equally skilled Jon Priest since 2005. He has continued the legacy of Etude as a Carneros standard-bearer, and the 2022 Grace Benoist Ranch Estate Pinot Noir is ample proof. With 96 points from James Suckling, it's a top-flight value contender in California Pinot at an outrageous $25 price for our private clients. This "floral and impressively complex" expression is premium California Pinot Noir all the way at a case-buy price that allows you to take house red roster up a level or two.

96JS

Bright aromas of fresh raspberries, violets, graphite and rose petals. The palate is medium-bodied with glossy tannins and balanced acidity, giving flavors of dried strawberries, cassia bark, citrus peel and dried herbs. Very well constructed, with underlying tension. Drink or hold.

2023 Bethel Heights Pinot Noir Estate (750ml)

"This wine consistently makes a compelling case for one of the best under $50 Oregon Pinot Noirs." - Clive Pursehouse, Decanter

One of the best under-$50 Oregon Pinot Noirs? No question. We'll do you one better – how about the best Oregon Pinot Noir for under $30? We think that's exactly what you're getting in the 2023 Bethel Heights Estate Pinot Noir at our market-best pricing. Sourced from three of the Casteel family's outstanding estate vineyards, this wine is the very definition of bang for your buck. Winemaker Ben Casteel is an ardent believer in bringing his A-game to everything he makes, and that includes his entry-level offering. This double 94-point gem is "medium-bodied, ripe, and elegant, with fine tannins and more density than the 2021 or 2022 vintages, yet it remains light on its feet." In short, it's a showcase of all that we love about Eola-Amity Hills Pinot, and it even has "serious enough structure to lay down should you choose" according to Decanter. It's also a perfect example of what makes Bethel Heights our best-selling Oregon wine brand, several years running.

A deeper jeweled magenta, the 2023 Pinot Noir Estate blends multiple estate parcels and is perfumed with cherry liqueur, black raspberry, violets, candied flowers, and rocky earth. It’s medium-bodied, ripe, and elegant, with fine tannins and more density than the 2021 or 2022 vintages, yet it remains light on its feet. Drink 2025-2035.

94 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Aug 2025)

This wine consistently makes a compelling case for one of the best under $50 Oregon Pinot Noirs ($36), sourced from three estate sites: Justice, Lewman, and the Bethel Heights estate. Winemaker Ben Casteel believes that the entry-point wine is often the most reflective of an estate’s quality, and therefore takes the assemblage of this wine as seriously as any of the others he produces. Earthborne aromatics accentuate the scent of fir tips, sea salt, and a dark, fruity tone. The palate flashes mouthfuls of fresh berries, with great sapidity, notes of turned earth, and serious enough structure to lay down should you choose.

94 points, Clive Pursehouse, Decanter (Jul 2025)

The 2023 Pinot Noir Estate has slowly unfolding scents of rhubarb, blackberry, blood orange, lavender and iron. The medium-bodied palate features concentrated, floral flavors. It’s framed by fine, chalky tannins and vibrant acidity and has a long, nuanced finish. It will benefit from time in a decanter.

93 points, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate (Nov 2025)

Aromas of red cherries, cranberries, dried herbs and subtle spices. The palate is fresh and layered, with fine tannins and lifted red fruit. Balanced and savory, with a long finish. Drink or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (Jun 2025)

The 2023 Pinot Noir Estate opens with a vibrant blend of crushed cherries and blackberries, elevated by sweet herbal tones and a nuance of spice. Juicy acidity enlivens depths of crisp wild berry fruit and mineral notes. The finish is pleasantly grippy, tapering off chewy and long with a tinge of licorice that lingers.

2023 Hourglass HG III (750ml)
Merlot from Napa, California
B-21 Top Recommendation

"It's medium to full-bodied, round, supple, and balanced, with some classic Napa richness and depth ..." - Jeb Dunnuck

We'll say it time and time again – finding any Napa red with a rock-solid score and premium pedigree under $40 is a search for a needle and a haystack, but with the 94-point 2023 HGIII blend from cult phenom Hourglass, we've got the needle in hand.

If you've ever looked at a map of Napa Valley, you'll see immediately where Hourglass got its name. The estate sits at the narrowest pinch where the hillsides are only a mile apart, the crux of the "hourglass" as its become known over the decades. Complementing this prized parcel, the Blueline vineyard in Calistoga was added to the estate in 2005 and planted to all five Bordeaux varietals. It's this site of ancient river gravel that forms the base of the proprietary 2023 HGIII blend, a "charming, sexy beauty" based on Merlot, crafted by winemaker Tony Biagi to be an immediately accessible, captivating expression that Napa fans can indulge in without hesitation.

The incredible 2023 growing season puts its stamp on the finished wine in an outstanding balance of plush fruit and structural vivacity, "expressive and detailed" to the utmost with varietal purity to spare. While the flagship Hourglass wines have become cult-caliber trophies over the years (with the price tags to match), the HGIII blend is a stunning and exceedingly rare value in today's Napa landscape that will thrill anyone's palate and budget.

94WS 92JD

Expressive and detailed, with multilayered red currant and cherry flavors taking on rose petal, dusty sage and black tea accents that build tension toward medium-grained tannins. Merlot, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2035.

94 points, Tim Fish, Wine Spectator (Feb 2026)

Based on 41% Merlot, 38% Petite Sirah, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% other red varietals and aged 16 months in 50% new and seasoned French oak, the 2023 HG III sports a ruby/plum hue as well as ripe red and black fruits, chocolaty herbs, and spice. It's medium to full-bodied, round, supple, and balanced, with some classic Napa richness and depth while staying light and balanced. There are roughly 13,000 cases produced. Drink this charming, sexy beauty over the coming 7-8 years. Drink 2025-2032.

2019 Torre de Ona Finca Martelo Reserva (750ml)
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation

"...the wine is very harmonious and balanced, with power and freshness, intensity and persistence." - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Founded in 1995 by La Rioja Alta, that famed bastion of traditional Rioja, the Torre de Oña estate is LRA's outpost in the world of modern-style Rioja, and this spectacular terroir in Rioja Alavesa provides the perfect canvas on which to carry out their vision.

While it's the newest wine in the line-up, the Finca Martelo has unquestionably become the estate's calling card, as it reflects the singular character of the Torre de Oña property in its 60-year-old vines. This single-vineyard beauty is only produced in select vintages, when the conditions allow for the perfect expression and balance that the estate deems the heart and soul of the wine. The 2019 is the current release, garnering solid press from all the usual suspects, led by 94+ points from Luis Gutiérrez of Wine Advocate, who lauds it as "surprisingly fresh, medium-bodied and fine-boned, clean and elegant." Representing "a distinctive and tasty Rioja style" according to Vinous' Joaquin Hidalgo, it shows its polished, modern side with all the poise and grace you'd expect from one of Rioja's most accomplished producers.

94WA 93W&S 93JS 92V

The 2019 Finca Martelo comes from property planted with a blend of 95% Tempranillo and 5% Mazuelo, Garnacha and Viura at 630 meters in altitude that they only bottle in very good or excellent years. The 2019 was picked starting October 15th, and the destemmed grapes were put through optical sorting, a five-day cold soak and then fermented in stainless steel and went through malolactic in new French and American oak barrels. The élevage was in 80% American and 20% French oak barrels and lasted for two years, during which time it was racked four times. 2019 feels like a very complete harvest for Martelo; the wine is very harmonious and balanced, with power and freshness, intensity and persistence. The palate is surprisingly fresh, medium-bodied and fine-boned, clean and elegant. 80,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2022.

94+ points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Feb 2024)

Though the winery’s name may be La Rioja Alta, this wine comes from Alavesa, grown at a parcel of 60-year-old vines at the Torre de Oña estate, in La Rioja Alta’s stable since 1995. Organically farmed at 2,060 feet in elevation, this 2019 leans into scents of rhubarb grown in a barnyard, with the horses there to fertilize it. The fruit has a cool red-berry granita character and a lasting floral grape skin finish. An intriguing old-fashioned Rioja to decant for grilled lamb.

93 points, Wine & Spirits (Dec 2023)

Scented and expressive nose with fresh cherries, plums, strawberries, stones, mussels and fine sweet spices. Fresh, juicy and medium-bodied on the palate with chalky tannins and a long, linear finish. 95% tempranillo and 5% mazuelo, garnacha and viura. Very drinkable. Already approachable, but can hold, too.

93 points, Zekun Shuai, James Suckling (Aug 2023)

The 2019 Reserva Finca Martelo is a blend of 95% Tempranillo with 5% Mazuelo, Garnacha and a dash of Viura from Rioja Alavesa. It aged for 24 months in American oak (80%) and French oak (20%). Displaying a garnet hue, the aromas include cherry and sour cherry, along with blueberry and licorice notes, complemented by hints of vanilla and caramel. Indulgent, with fine-grained tannins, the delicate palate lingers long, concluding with a flavorful finish. This wine represents a distinctive and tasty Rioja style.

"Mid-weight and gracious, with terrific purity, the Madame de Beaucaillou is a gorgeous wine..." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Savvy Bordeaux fans know that some of the very values and overachievers can be found in the second and even third wines from the legendary, blue-chip estates, especially in epic vintages like 2022. Saint-Julien icon Ducru-Beaucaillou knocked it out of the park in 2022, from their grand vin all the way down to today's superb value gem, the third wine Madame de Beaucaillou.

Made from mostly Merlot, the 2022 Madame offers up the intensity and energy of the vintage, with the ripeness of fruit providing immediate approachability. Jeb Dunnuck notes, "This rich, medium to full-bodied, layered, concentrated beauty way over-delivers." We couldn't have put it better ourselves. As any Bordeaux fan knows, the waiting is usually the hardest part, but the 2022 Madame provides an immediately enjoyable, pure representation of an epic modern Bordeaux vintage that you can dive into any night of the week, and for the next several years if you're so inclined.

93JS 92V 91JD

Intense and deeply colored, with lots of violets, fresh blue fruit, blackberries and minerals. Really flavorful, with precise tannins and lovely firmness without chewiness. Long and concentrated but fresh and energetic. 66% merlot, 23% cabernet sauvignon and 11% petit verdot. Drink from 2028.

93 points, Zekun Shuai, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

The 2022 Madame de Beaucaillou is an elegant, polished wine. Crushed flowers, bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, cinnamon and white pepper are all beautifully lifted. Mid-weight and gracious, with terrific purity, the Madame de Beaucaillou is a gorgeous wine from proprietor Bruno Borie and his team at Ducru-Beaucaillou.

92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2025)

The 2022 Madame De Beaucaillou (66% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 11% Petit Verdot) is brilliant, with a dense ruby/plum hue as well as powerful aromatics of crème de cassis, ripe black cherries, spicy wood, and smoky tobacco. This rich, medium to full-bodied, layered, concentrated beauty way over-delivers. Drink bottles over the coming decade or so.

2021 San Vicente (750ml)
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

San Vicente is as unconventional a project as you'll find in Rioja. When the Eguren family ripped up their vineyard in the early 1980s and replanted it with a massale selection of clones from their lowest-yielding vines, the consternation and ridicule came from all corners of the region. But he who laughs last laughs best, and now the Eguren family's efforts have been totally vindicated, as the wine is coveted Rioja collector's treasure year in and year out.

"The 2021 San Vicente showcases the completeness of the year with a rare combination of power and elegance" - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

At its debut one of the first single-cru bottlings that Rioja had ever seen, San Vicente has changed the region's dynamics over the past few decades, with numerous producers now following the Eguren family's lead and going for a site-specific, terroir-driven approach to their wines. A true original and still one of the best, San Vicente has once again stunned critics left and right with the 97-point 2021 vintage. "This has immediate charm and long-term aging potential. It is already expressive but will deepen beautifully over time," writes Vinous' Joaquin Hidalgo. The wine's refined, modern style and impeccable class have garnered the San Vicente a devoted following that will no doubt go head over heels for this latest expression, especially at our unmatched private client price that beats the rest of the market by a wide margin.

97JD 95WA 95V

Founded in 1991 in La Canoca by the Eguren family of Sierra Cantabria, the 2021 San Vicente is 100% Tempranillo from the highest area of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, the grapes a massal selection of a nearly extinct variety called Tempranillo Peludo. The vines are well-balanced to the region and climate and have profound acidity. Bordeaux barrels age the wine for 20 months. Salty and earthy, it has an old-world quality accented in rich black fruit, sous bois, oak spice, graphite, and dried herb, finishing with a complex finesse that should keep it singing another 20-25 years.

97 points, Virginie Boone, Jeb Dunnuck (Jul 2025)

The 2021 San Vicente showcases the completeness of the year with a rare combination of power and elegance, with intensity of fruit, clout and very good freshness and the roundness of the tannins from the year. It has a lot of everything; the selection of Tempranillo used for this wine gave a lot of color, notes of aromatic herbs and ripe berry fruit and a solid palate, but it's fine-boned, with a beautiful texture. It's still young but already shows incipient complexity. It absorbed the new oak (French and American) pretty early, and the aromas and flavors are very integrated. It should be very long lived. This is one of the finest vintages for San Vicente. 50,000 bottles. It was bottled in August 2023.

95 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Feb 2025)

The 2021 San Vicente was made from 100% Tempranillo Peludo, a rare variant of the grape. This was grown on clay and coarse gravel in La Canoca, San Vicente de la Sonsierra. Aged for 20 months in mostly French oak, the nose is expressive, with red fruit, balsamic herbs, undergrowth and a light note of orange peel. On the palate, it’s intense and textured, with chalky tannins and a broad stream of flavor. This has immediate charm and long-term aging potential. It is already expressive but will deepen beautifully over time.

2022 Avignonesi Vino Nobile di Montepulciano (750ml)
Sangiovese from Montepulciano, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

It's rare that such a renowned and reference-point estate like Avignonesi keeps pushing new boundaries instead of just resting on their laurels, but that's exactly what this iconic property has been up to for several vintages. And as Eric Guido of Vinous puts it, "The results are pretty stunning." After all, these fan-favorite, best-selling Tuscan reds have been a staple of B-21's Italian portfolio for years, and the 95-point 2022 Vino Nobile di Montalcino follows right in line with its predecessors.

"Avignonesi’s flagship bottling remains a fantastic value for first-class Vino Nobile..." - Eric Guido, Vinous

The estate's pioneering approach of crafting this wine out of 100% Prugnolo Gentile (the local Sangiovese strain) has made it a singular expression that has helped define the entire Vino Nobile category. The 2022 vintage has resulted in "a layered and complex wine with fresh, elegant aromas" and a palate that's "with a medium to full body, high yet integrated acidity, fine chalky tannins and a firm, polished finish." All of it adds up to another stupendous overachiever at a remarkable price, which we've come to expect from Avignonesi at this point. It's all the more impressive considering you can stock up big and stash some away in the cellar – as Eric Guido notes, "it will be worth the wait."

A layered and complex wine with fresh, elegant aromas of balsamic, eucalyptus, bergamot, licorice, bark and cherry pits. Elegant on the palate as well, with a medium to full body, high yet integrated acidity, fine chalky tannins and a firm, polished finish. Drink or hold.

2021 Damilano Barolo Lecinquevigne (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

There aren't many entry-level Barolos out there that offer the kind of reliable, old-school character and class that Damilano's Lecinquevigne displays, vintage after vintage. That has everything to do with the wine's origins. A true appellation expression, Lecinquevigne is composed of vineyards in the five main villages of the region – Grinzane Cavour, La Morra, Monforte d'Alba, Barolo, and Novello – which allows for remarkable stylistic consistency in the face of varying vintage conditions.

The epic 2021 vintage turned out a benchmark Lecinquevigne with a pair of 95-point scores from James Suckling and Kerin O'Keefe, along with additional praise from Wine Spectator and Wine Advocate's Monica Larner. Showcasing pure fruit and the precise structure of the vintage, this is "bold and beautiful" example of how good even the entry-level Barolos are these days.

Long-time fans of the wine will find everything they've come to know and love from Damilano, while those looking to introduce themselves to the classic Barolo style without breaking the bank should look no further than this confident and poised expression.

95KO 95JS 93WA 93WS

Bold and beautiful, the 2021 Le Cinquevigne boasts intense aromas of violet, rose, perfumed berry, star anise and a balsamic whiff of eucalyptus. Smooth and vibrant, the savory, elegantly structured palate doles out ripe Morello cherry, raspberry, mint and licorice accompanied by taut, fine-grained tannins. Bright acidity keeps it balanced.

95 points, Kerin O'Keefe (May 2025)

A fine-tuned, elegant Barolo with aromas of dried cherries, dried roses, licorice and mint. Full-bodied, it shows smoothness, density, weight and soft tannins despite the structure, with refreshing acidity and a long, vibrant finish full of savory flavors. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

95 points, Aldo Fiordelli, James Suckling (May 2025)

A blend of fruit from five MGA sites (Brunate, Liste, Cerequio, Cannubi and Raviole), this is an ample release of 70,000 bottles. The Damilano 2021 Barolo Lecinquevigne offers nice intensity and standard Nebbiolo complexity with dark fruit, cassis, spice and toasted tobacco leaf. You do not taste the personality of any one site, but that's not the point. Aged in large botte, the wine is open-knit in texture and immediate. You can wait longer or pull the cork now.

93 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jun 2025)

Laced with cherry, strawberry, rose, mineral and white pepper flavors, this red is expressive despite being linear and taut. Firms up on the finish, where lively acidity drives the fruit and savory elements. Shows excellent harmony and potential. Best from 2028 through 2045. 12,500 cases made, 8,000 cases imported.

2023 Domaine du Bel Air Bourgueil Les Vingt Lieux Dits (750ml)
Cabernet Franc from Touraine, Loire, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"... [a] hidden-gem domaine that is also one of the benchmarks for the Bourgueil appellation." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Loire Buyer

We had been searching for the wines of Pierre and Rodolphe Gauthier at Domaine du Bel-Air, since tasting the full range early last year, and finally the opportunity materialized in late autumn. Now, we not only have access, but we have direct access. The latest addition to our Loire direct-import stable is a benchmark of red wine excellence, all the way from their stunning, old-vine, single-vineyard cuvees to the entry-level 2023 Les Vingt Lieux Dits, "a classic, old-school Loire Cab Franc in all the best ways," as B-21 Buyer Andrew Kitz describes it.

As you might assume, this Cabernet Franc is a blend of up to twenty of the domaine's micro-parcels in Bourgueil, with average vine ages of 40 years. Long, cold-soak maceration, natural yeast fermentation, and aging for 12 months in used barrels all contributes to the wine's classic expression of youthful Cabernet Franc. The cooler vintage resulted in a wine with restrained yet concentrated fruit, assertive mineral backbone, and varietally pure character all the way through. The 2023 vintage very much favored the Gauthier brothers' style, which is to say this is a structurally solid Cabernet Franc with real substance and cellar potential, all for an incredible $25 price.

As good as the Vingt Lieux-Dits is, it's the single-vineyard cuvées that cement the domaine's reference-point reputation, and the Grand Mont is the crown jewel in the stable. Vinous' Rebecca Gibb describes the 2021 single-vineyard wines as "long-lived, elegant classics" and the 94-point Grand Mont in particular as "savory and serious ... precise, balanced, and full of sinew." Much like 2023, the 2021 vintage was cool growing season that favored the domaine style, and the Grand Mont is an impeccable example of the very best qualities of classic, top-end Loire Cabernet Franc.

I had been searching for access to Pierre and Rodolphe Gauthier’s wines since I tasted them last year, and now not only do we have them, but we have them directly from the domaine’s cellars. The 2023 Les Vingt Lieux Dits is the perfect introduction to this hidden-gem domaine that is also one of the benchmarks for the Bourgueil appellation. It’s classic, old-school Loire Cab Franc in all the best ways. The nose leads with compact, tart red cranberries, rhubarb, and dried cherries. A dusty soil note gives a great foundation, but there’s also a lingering, darker edge to the bouquet with anise, pepper, and leafy underbrush. The palate shows the 2023 vintage in its firm but balanced tannic structure. It’s tightly wound and grippy at the moment, so decant or open it ahead of time if you’re trying it today. The same compact fruit profile from the nose is here in very primary form, and the mineral spine is well-defined and delineated. A hint of dried violet takes the edge off the minerality, but it retains a bracing, structured finish that needs time to soften up (which it will do). The Gauthiers’ top-tier winemaking and viticulture are on full display even in their entry-level gem.

2022 Produttori del Barbaresco (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barbaresco, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

"...this is a stellar showing." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

What La Chablisiènne is to Burgundy, Produttori del Barbaresco is to Piedmont (and Italy overall) –the undisputed standard bearer for excellence in a wine co-operative. This legendary producer has been setting the tone for Barbaresco for decades, turning out vintage after vintage of reference-point, collectible expressions from their incredible stable of prized crus.

While we await the release of the inimitable, single-vineyard Riservas, the village Barbaresco is always an enticing glimpse of what the heavy hitters will offer. Sourced from many of those same coveted crus that comprise Produttori's range of collectible trophies, the appellation bottling boasts unimpeachable pedigree and class, and the 95-point 2022 rendition has the critical line to prove it. With stellar scores from nearly every critic of note, it's "round and succulent, with a fleshy profile and a solid base of tannins" according to Wine Spectator, while James Suckling calls it "delicious and balanced," the latter quality a rarity in this hot, dry Piedmont vintage. This rendition enjoys the added benefit of the addition of some juice originally destined for the Riservas, before the winery decided to scale down the volume of those wines in 2022. It all adds up to another feather in the cap of arguably the most important producer in Barbaresco and one of the region's most consistently smart buys.

In 2022, the estate will only be producing a small quantity of the single-vineyard Riservas, with the majority of fruit going into the 2022 Barbaresco. It pours a jeweled ruby red color and reveals a seductive yet very pure nose of cherry cordial, crushed roses, sweet herbs, and peppery spice. Medium-bodied, it has supple ripeness in the fruit yet wonderful clarity in its tannins and acidity, giving the wine excellent definition and balance. Roughly 133,333 bottles were produced. Drink 2026-2050.

95 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2026)

Bright and overtly fruity, this is full of intoxicating violets, cinnamon, blood oranges and black cherries, expressing mint and balsamic depth. Full-bodied with a soft, smooth attack, dusty yet velvety tannins and brilliant acidity. The chocolaty finish shows licorice and a mouth-coating texture. Delicious and balanced. Drink or hold.

94 points, Aldo Fiordelli, James Suckling (Nov 2025)

Violet, rose and dried herb scents over black cherry, raspberry and a touch of tar. Medium-bodied yet firm on the palate, its succulent red fruits are framed by fine tannins and fresh acidity. The clean and persistent finish shows floral, red-fruit and mineral nuances.

94 points, Lauren Mowery, Decanter (Apr 2026)

The 2022 Barbaresco is a pretty rich, heady wine. Dark cherry/plum fruit, cloves, licorice and mocha build as the 2022 shows off its considerable depth. This is one of the few 2022s that is quite resonant texturally. The aromatics could be more lifted and the tannins could use a bit more polish, but those qualities were next to impossible to come by in 2022. The inclusion of some juice from Riserva lots is a great help. All things considered, this is a stellar showing.

93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Oct 2025)

Packed with cherry and raspberry flavors, this red is round and succulent, with a fleshy profile and a solid base of tannins. Mineral and menthol accents add depth, and the finish is fresh and long. Best from 2028 through 2042. 25,000 cases made, 600 cases imported.

93 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Apr 2026)

Dark fruits and firm structure reminding us why this co-op has been the neighborhood's best dinner party secret for generations. The palate brings that same trusted pleasure, where depth and volume prove sometimes the best bottles come from many hands working as one.

2021 Domaine du Bel Air Bourgueil Grand Mont (750ml)
Cabernet Franc from Touraine, Loire, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

94V

The 2021 Grand Mont is savory and serious. There's richness and intensity of fruit despite a clear freshness that keeps this light on its feet. This is not a big, ripe Grand Mont like the 2018, but it has tenderness and finesse with a chalky, powdery texture on the palate. The 2021 is precise, balanced and full of sinew on the finish.

NV Roger Coulon Esprit Vrigny 1er Cru Brut Nature (2019) (750ml)

"Roger Coulon remains one of the under-the-radar names in Champagne ... I find a purity in these Champagnes that is hard to fully describe with words. It’s a sort of transparency - an expression of vintage, variety and place - that is both singular and compelling." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

We can't overstate our great fortune to have struck up a direct-import relationship with Roger Coulon, a reference-point domaine for the wines of the Vrigny cru on the Montagne de Reims. Their wines have a solid insider following in the United States, and when the opportunity to go domaine-direct came along, there was no question what to do. At our recent visit, the young, forward-thinking winemaker Edgar Coulon showcased an entire range full of superb offerings, four of which are now in stock at B-21.

Leading off, the 1er Cru Heri-Hodie Extra Brut is beautifully expressive and graceful in its 100% Meunier character, with absolutely no oxidative edges, despite being made from a solera started in 1995! The 94-point 1er Cru L'Hommée, from the excellent base year 2020, showcases Edgar's expert touch with Chardonnay in its subtle, understated, yet ultimately charming style. "A beautiful vein of freshness pervades this and makes it shine from the inside out. Impressive depth and concentration," notes Antonio Galloni. Offering up a kaleidoscope of all three varietals, the 1er Cru Esprit de Vrigny, based on the equally excellent 2019 vintage, is "medium-bodied, [with] a pillowy mousse with a silky texture and a salty, savory, mouthwatering finish with good length," per Jeb Dunnuck's 94-point review.

The crown jewel, however, is the remarkable 2014 vintage cuvée. "Coulon's vintage bottling straddles a fine line between evolution and vitality. Few producers are taking the Vrigny terroir to such heights," notes B-21 Champagne Buyer Andrew Kitz. The 2014 Millésime Blanc de Noirs also carries a trio of outstanding critical reviews led by 96 points from Vinous' Anne Krebiehl, who lauds it as "a rounded, profound wine ... sleek yet so grounded." It's a fantastic example of how well the two distinct terroirs of this 1er Cru play together, with the Pinot Noir from the clay loam soils of Vrigny and the ungrafted Meunier from the sandier soils of neighboring Gueux both merging in a thrilling, tightrope balance of expression. The structure of the under-the-radar, excellent 2014 vintage puts everything in its proper place and endows the wine with the substance to continue its evolution for many years. This is one the great scores of the year so far in collectible Champagne.

For anyone serious about great grower Champagne, Roger Coulon's wines should be top of the list for your next discoveries. Simply put, they're a quiet force to be reckoned with.

Meaning “Spirit of Vrigny,” the NV Champagne Premier Cru Esprit de Vrigny Brut Nature is a bright straw/silver hue and comes from three plots of Meunier, Chardonnay, and Pinot Noir from three different spots in the vineyard. Aged in small oak barrels with longer aging on the lees before bottling, it’s drawn mostly from the 2019 vintage with 20% reserve wine. The nose offers dewy freshness with a pretty, springy feel, and they control the pressure to 4.5 bars to give the wine a more creamy texture. Medium-bodied, it has a pillowy mousse with a silky texture and a salty, savory, mouthwatering finish with good length. It might not have quite the same aging potential as L’Hommée, but it has a lot to offer now or over the next 15 or more years.

The 2014 Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs is a half-and-half blend of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier, the latter from ungrafted vines that are more than 60 years old. Waxy apple skin and damp earth on the nose immediately suggest a rounded, profound wine. The palate is wonderfully salty and concentrated, packing red apple flesh and earth alongside lemon and plum into a mouthwateringly salty package. This is sleek and yet so grounded, with a totally enticing, appetizing streak of saltiness. Dosage is 2 grams per liter. Disgorged March 2023.

96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Apr 2025)

The 2014 Champagne Blanc de Noirs Millesime is made from Pinot Noir planted in Vrigny and from ungrafted Meunier grown on sandy soils in Geuex. The nose is expressive on opening, with appealing notes of pastry, preserved strawberries, apricot, and wet stones. Medium to full-bodied, it presents a pithy texture on the palate, featuring savory earth and intensity, along with notes of orange pith, peppery spice, mouthwatering saltiness, and bitter citrus. It’s maturing gracefully and retains plenty of freshness. Drink 2025-2045. 2 grams per liter dosage.

2023 Le Pupille Saffredi (750ml)

Fattoria Le Pupille's flagship Saffredi has always been a top-echelon Tuscan collectible, with multiple 100-point vintages in its track record and a consistent reputation for delivering one of the finest expressions of the coastal Tuscan terroir available. Proprietor Elisabetta Geppetti has fashioned the estate and this benchmark wine into a standard bearer for Maremma, and now that her son, Ettore, has taken the reins, the future looks brighter than ever, as is plainly clear in the newly released, highly acclaimed 2023 Saffredi.

"The Fattoria Le Pupille 2023 Saffredi represents a classic expression from a fresh vintage that ultimately performed far better than expected..." - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

The 2023 growing season differed markedly from 2022, which allowed the winemaking team to continue their pursuit of streamlined, focused expression, rather than power. As Larner notes, "this vintage is defined by generosity and luscious fruit. The Cabernet Sauvignon in particular appears crunchy, youthful and fresh, giving the wine energy and forward momentum." Decanter tags the 2023 with 97 points, noting a wine "full of dynamism" for which "the future bodes well." There isn't much more we can add to that, but to say that this is a can't-miss opportunity for savvy collectors to stack the cellar high and deep with a long-haul performer at the best price in the country, in both 750ML and 1.5L formats.

98WA 97JS 97D

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, the Fattoria Le Pupille 2023 Saffredi represents a classic expression from a fresh vintage that ultimately performed far better than expected despite mid-season mildew pressure. The estate continues to refine its use of wood to emphasize brightness and fruit purity, a shift that is especially evident here. The wine shows notes of dark cherry, ripe blackberry, spice and hints of creamy chocolate. While the 2022 vintage emphasized harder tannins, this vintage is defined by generosity and luscious fruit. The Cabernet Sauvignon in particular appears crunchy, youthful and fresh, giving the wine energy and forward momentum.

98 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Feb 2026)

A racy and focused wine with aromas of blackcurrants, blackberries, fresh rosemary, sage, thyme and lavender. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a crunchy finish. Shows excellent length. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot. Better in two or three years, but hard not to drink now.

97 points, James Suckling (Jul 2025)

The ‘rebirth’ of Saffredi in 2022 continues with this 2023; a wetter vintage which has elevated the aromatics. Herbal and ripe dark fruit scents evoke the surrounding landscape. Lifted and vibrant, it's a balanced mouthful of crunchy dark cherry, blackberry and raspberry, subtle spices, and round, silky tannins. There's a distinct floral imprint – pot pourri, violets and Mediterranean herbs – along with a lick of salinity, making for a deep sip full of dynamism and juxtaposition. The future bodes well for this wine.

Virginia Distillery Co. Blue Ridge Select American Single Malt Whisky

"Since its founding in 2011, Virginia Distillery Co. has been a pioneer in American Single Malt and a force behind the style." - Whisky Advocate

America's most authoritative spirits publication sums it up neatly in the above quote – the burgeoning American single malt scene is still finding its footing and its place in the wider craft spirit world, but there's no question that it was Virginia Distillery Company that got the ball rolling on this dynamic category in the first place. Founded by Irish-American immigrant Dr. George Moore, the distillery is utterly dedicated to producing reference-point expressions that set the bar for what malted barley spirits can achieve in the United States. Nestled in the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains, VDC distills with pristine mountain spring water. Made from two-row barley grown at a handful of top-notch Midwest farms and malted on site at the distillery, the spirits are double-distilled on custom-made, copper pot stills fabricated in Scotland. Once you taste the purity of the malt in each bottling, you'll be fully convinced of their dedication to the craft.

The 94-point Blue Ridge Select Single Malt is the flagship. Aged onsite for five years in virgin oak barrels harvested from the Blue Ridge Mountains, it's a roundly praised, reference-point for the category, "a layered and rich gateway American Single Malt" that has racked up numerous awards and accolades including multiple medals and Best Of nods from the country's most prestigious spirits competitions. The distillery also excels at cask finishing, which is evident in their critically acclaimed, 96-point Port Cask Reserve Single Malt and the 94-point Cabernet Cask Select Single Malt, each of which offers a distinctive take on their superb base spirit, the casks imparting noticeable yet measured influence on the profile of the juice. Finally, the distillery has hit on a stellar limited edition concept in their Split Barrel #1 Bourbon + Single Malt Whisky. This brilliant expression marries 5-year-old VDC single malt and 4-year-old Kentucky bourbon (from an undisclosed yet well-known Bardstown source) in a surprisingly harmonious profile. B-21 Spirits Buyer Andrew Kitz writes, "The best thing about this Split Barrel is that the bourbon is not the centerpiece. VDC knows their bread and butter, and they choose to highlight it here, with timely interludes of bourbon influence here and there ... and the value is just off the charts."

Maybe you're familiar with American Single Malt or maybe you're not, but either way, for anyone looking to get a handle on some of the best under-the-radar buys in craft spirits, this is your entry into the category, and your exploration couldn't be easier on the wallet at sub-$35 pricing across the board.

Finished in virgin toasted barrels sourced from trees grown in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Expect a burnished gold hue and a bright fresh apple and pear scent. Honey coats the toasty palate, adding a hint of plum, and finishing long with a smoky waft and cinnamon tingle.

94 points, Kara Newman, Wine Enthusiast (Nov 2025)

Gold color. Aromas and flavors of orange zest, clove, toffee, and red apple, cardamon and five spice, and grilled peach with a round, crisp, dryish medium body and a tingling, interesting, medium-length finish manifesting overtones of peanut butter and oatmeal, corn bread with fruit salad and five spice, mesquite smoked leather, and peppered bacon. Nice and youthful with apple and citrus notes enlivened with baking spice; this is a layered and rich gateway American Single Malt.

92 points, Beverage Testing Institute (Sep 2024)

Initially, cinnamon is the star of the show, culminating in Golden Grahams and Cinnamon Life cereal on the nose. Soon enough, however, those spiced aromas are checked by strawberries, cre`me patisserie, vanilla pudding, strawberry Whoppers, and white chocolate. On the palate, hot cinnamon emerges, balanced here by Mexican hot chocolate and espresso-tinged notes. The finish ties it all together nicely: chocolate, coffee, and cinnamon spice combine in a most satisfying flavor trifecta.

The past few vintages have shown that Nuits reference-point Henri Gouges is back on top in a big way. Among the domaine's superb stable of vineyards, their monopole Clos des Porrets St-Georges is always a sharp choice among savvy insiders, and the 2023 does not disappoint.

"One of the most striking wines of the appellation." - Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy

Within the larger Porrets St-Georges 1er Cru, Gouges' monopole Clos is a parcel of heavy gravel and scree soils over dense, pink limestone bedrock. The site produces intensely aromatic wines of exotic profile, with finely structured backbones that take more than a few years to reveal their pinnacle expressions. The 2022 is "at once ripe yet cool" according to Meadows, "with impressive persistence" that carries the hallmark character of the 2022 vintage in the Côte de Nuits. "Lush, juicy and seductive" per Wine Spectator's 95-point review, the 2022 Porrets shows "solid structure, with fine promise for its evolution." The 2022 Burgundy vintage remains a treasure trove of unbeatable collectible pedigree, and Gouges' Clos des Porrets proves you don't have to spend a mint to get your hands on a true cellar all-star.

Lush, juicy and seductive, this red features blackberry, black currant, blueberry, iron and earth aromas and flavors. Quickly tightens up courtesy of the solid structure, with fine promise for its evolution. Offers terrific balance and length. Best from 2029 through 2047. 400 cases imported.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Jul 2025)

The 2022 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Porrets-Saint-Georges 1er Cru had been racked the previous week, but it was essentially the final wine I tasted as it was just about to be bottled. It has a stricter and more backward bouquet than the Chênes Carteaux: blackberry and wild strawberry fruit, the 20% new oak neatly folded in. The palate is medium-bodied with quite firm tannins, leaning more towards black fruit laced with tar and tobacco. Quite Morey-like towards the finish with impressive persistence. Give this two or three years in bottle to shave the edges. Very fine.

92-94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Jan 2024)

Racked, to bottle in December. 35 hl/ha. A darker purple, just a little oak showing on the nose alongside the dark raspberry fruit. The grain of tannin is very good, and ideally integrated, with just the right acidity as well. Tasted Nov 2023.

91-94 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy (Jan 2024)

This manages to be at once ripe yet cool with its layered combination of black cherry, plum and just turned earth and humus nuances. There is notably better density and volume to the bigger-bodied flavors that coat the palate with dry extract on the firm, moderately austere and sneaky long finish. This by contrast is going to need at least a few years of keeping first.

Golden amber color. Aromas and flavors of old leather, dried red flowers, chicory, nuts, Kentucky cheroots, and cinnamon with a round, crisp, dry medium body and an interesting, medium-long finish with impressions of dark malt, landjager, and cocoa and leather. Rich, subtle, and complex on the nose and palate, this woody and spicy Whiskey will hold up beautifully in your Old Fashioned.

Vanilla and baking spice aromas float from the glass, accompanied by cigar ash, grape, and tart red berries. The palate is feather light but flavorful, with fruity notes of Golden Delicious apple skin, raisins, and peach. There’s also a nice undercurrent of earthiness, and a dash of cinnamon spice.

You can’t write this whiskey off as another gimmick bottling. Blended from equal parts VDC’s 5-year-old single malt and 4-year-old bourbon sourced from an undisclosed craft Bardstown distillery (take your guess), it’s really delivers on its promise, especially for the price. The best thing about this Split Barrel is that the bourbon is not the centerpiece. VDC knows their bread and butter, and they choose to highlight it here, with timely interludes of bourbon influence here and there. It’s a deep gold/light amber color introduces a nose of graham cracker, light toffee, easy spice, yellow apple, peanut butter cookie, mineral hints, orange peel, and lemon cookie. The palate matches nose quite a lot, with more crisp apple fruit, touches of mineral and malt, tart lemon, a pop of deep bourbon spice on the solid, deep mid-palate, and drawn out, slightly hot finish of golden malt and ginger. Given how harmonious the two components are together, I’m confident this would play well with a lot of different ingredients. They really nailed the stylistic synchronicity here, and the value is just off the charts.

Aged in tawny port casks and port-style wine casks sourced in Virginia, this deep-amber whiskey opens with tart dried cherry and cranberry, leading into cocoa, toffee and a welcome bitter-espresso hint. Cinnamon and clove warm the finish.

NV Roger Coulon L'Hommee 1er Cru (2020) (750ml)
Sparkling from Champagne, France

Coming from different villages within the estate, the NV Champagne Premier Cru L'Hommee Extra Brut has a pale silver/straw color and is named after traditional agriculture of the past. Based on the 2020 vintage, with 20% coming from 2019, it consists of 60% Chardonnay with the rest Pinot Noir, with vinification fully done in oak but using different sizes and ages. Medium-bodied, it does not come across as oaky; it just subtly frames the wine, allowing its fruit to shine in this release. It’s approachable and delicate, featuring toast, preserved citrus, fresh pear, and a delicately pillowy mousse with a touch of spice on the finish. It’s very enjoyable now and should drink well over the next 10 years. 3 grams per liter dosage. The nose is somewhat shy initially, but after disgorging in November 2023, it becomes very expressive as it opens.

The NV Extra Brut L'Hommée Premier Cru is a blend of 60% Chardonnay and 40% Pinot Noir. Melted candlewax and stone are shy on the nose. The palate comes with freshness and frothy foam, framing an essentially salty, mouthwatering waxiness that recalls red apple skin. A beautiful vein of freshness pervades this and makes it shine from the inside out. Impressive depth and concentration. Dosage is 3 grams per liter. Disgorged: November 2023.

At Roger Coulon, they age the wines after disgorgement so they are ready to drink upon release, with two years in the cellar before the release of the Heri-Hodie. The NV Champagne Premier Cru Heri-Hodie Extra Brut means "yesterday to today," symbolizing the connection between the nine generations that have run the estate over the course of centuries. The wine features a solera of Meunier started in 1995, with the main vintage being 2021. Made with 100% Meunier in the style of Vrigny, which has sandy soils, it's an inviting wine with pretty floral and impressively fresh aromas that are not oxidative, with fruity notes of strawberry, as well as fresh flowers and candied citrus. Juicy upfront, it’s medium-bodied, with a pleasing bitter citrus that creates a mouthwatering sensation complemented by a delicate salty spice. The palate is medium-bodied, with a fine peppery mousse, and it has a pleasing finish. It will be best enjoyed from 2025 to 2032. It’s raised in oak barrels, but the solera remains in a tank to preserve freshness. With a dosage of three grams per liter, it was disgorged in July 2023.

2022 Domaine Gauby Cotes du Roussillon Villages Les Calcinaires Rouge (750ml)

"... some of the most brilliant wines in France that virtually no one ever hears about!" - John Gilman, View From the Cellar

If dramatic scenery determined a wine region's fame, everyone would know about the Côtes de Roussillon. This landscape in the foothills of the Pyrenees is some of the most visually striking and inspiring in the wine world, and this rugged, wild character comes through in the region's best examples, namely the wines of Domaine Gauby. This family-run domaine is the reference-point for pinnacle expressions of the clay/limestone and schist soils and extremely old vines, and their wines play in the same league as top examples from the more famous appellations in the Rhône.

The 93-point 2022 Calcinaires Rouge is a prime introduction the sheer excellence and dynamic style that are the hallmarks of the domaine. A blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan (this from almost 100-year-old vines), it's "a gorgeous, immediately charming expression that showcases this forgotten part of France in beautiful relief." From both granite and limestone soils, the signatures of both are readily apparent, and the utterly captivating, expressive fruit profile pops with real charm and intensity.

The 2020 Vieilles Vignes Rouge is a step in the opposite stylistic direction, defined by intense, structured minerality and dark undertones. Made mostly of Carignan from 120-year-old vines, "this is a dark, brooding, feral wine with an untamed edge that just screams of (or from) the wilderness," as B-21 buyer Andrew Kitz describes it. The ultra-firm yet refined texture is a perfect foundation for its immense concentration and primary, tightly wound core. You'll eventually get the gist of what the VV is about with time and air, but this is a must-have for the cellar that will perform like a champ in the cellar.

Finally, the 2019 La Muntada is the domaine's tête de cuvée, a selection of the very finest barrels in the cellar blended for their apex expression of the Gauby style. View From the Cellar's John Gilman declares, "This is a truly stunning young wine that is as good as anything being made in Châteauneuf du Pape these days, and maybe better." Incredibly concentrated and structured, the 2019 is indeed surprisingly young still, with undeniable cellar potential indicated by profound primary complexity. As Andrew observes, "This will be a phenomenal wine for the next 20 years."

Any way you look at it, this is a trio of benchmark beauties that offer avid wine adventurers and collectors a taste of the very best of one of France's most singular appellations.

93AK 92JG

The entry-level wine from this benchmark estate is a prime example of the next level that the Gaubys are working at. An “entry-level” wine shouldn’t be this good, yet here we are. Most Syrah from younger vines with Grenache and a dash of Carignan from near 100-year-old vines thrown in, the 2022 Calcinaires is a gorgeous, immediately charming expression that showcases this forgotten part of France in beautiful relief. Super-pure aromas of both dried and ripe cherry, licorice, and pure schist pop from the glass with fantastic definition. A little air darkens the fruit and brings out contrasting notes of iron and lavender. The medium-weight palate is suave and velvety through and through, with a supremely juicy core of tart currant, forest berry, and lavender. The foundation displays both the granite and limestone soils with fantastic clarity, while the structure and texture never lose their poise through the medium-long, graceful finish. A true example of great viticulture and winemaking coming together in the bottle. You could easily cellar it, but why deny yourself the pleasure?

93 points, Andrew Kitz, B-21 France Buyer (Feb 2026)

Gérard and Lionel Gauby, the very talented father and son team here, farm their vineyards biodynamically and make some of the most brilliant wines in Fance that virtually no one ever hears about! Their approach is utterly classical, with fermentations done with indigenous yeasts, with no chapitalization or acidification and bottling without fining or filtration. Their Calcinaires Rouge is crafted from a cépages of carignan, grenache, mourvèdre and syrah, with the oldest vines that go into this cuvée more than ninety years of age and everything farmed biodynamically for decades. The wine is raised in cement vats. The 2022 version tips the scales at an even thirteen percent octane and delivers a superb, refined bouquet of red berries, a touch of fruitcake, chalky minerality, chicory, spiced meats, bonfire and a gentle topnote of garrigue. On the palate the wine is bright, full-bodied and tangy, with a good core of fruit, excellent soil signature, moderate tannins and a long, beautifully balanced and very promising, complex finish. This is a properly structured young wine in the 2022 vintage and will need a bit of bottle age before it starts to drink with generosity.

"These Neta bottlings are something else. Artisanal to the core ... Handcrafted mezcal ancestrale of the highest caliber." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

As the mezcal world gets more and more attention from a wider audience, we're seeing more and more of these stunning, small-batch, artisanal masterpieces come our way, but the Neta bottlings are starting to occupy their own rarified air altogether. Neta works closely with over twenty small, family producers from the southern valleys and hills of Miahuatlán, Oaxaca to source mezcals made only in the ancestrale method, considered the apex of quality and craftsmanship in the mezcal hierarchy. Each bottling is strictly a single batch, made from one oven load of piñas and one distillation.

Whether following a recipe that's been around for generations or pushing new boundaries, these maestro mezcaleros are producing absolutely thrilling results. The Tequilana Capón from Wilfredo Sanchez is "utterly intense and measured at the same time" with "explosive aromatics" and a palate profile that you must taste to beileve. As Spirits buyer Andrew Kitz explains, "The beautiful flavor depth, as impressive as it is, takes a backseat to the mouthfeel, which literally has everything in spades – an insane texture, incredible weight, effortless balance, mouth-filling viscosity, and an endless finish." No less impressive is the Ensamble Capón Bicuixe + Espadin from Heriberto Sanchez. A 60/40 blend of wild, two-year capón Bicuishe and cultivated Espadin, it's a "a classic mezcal of real terroir expression" with its explosive aromatic profile and "enigmatic" palate. As Andrew explains, "It’s all over the place in most charming way, just an endlessly fun spirit to capture your sensory imagination."

Chalk Neta up with the most dynamic bottlers in the mezcal scene. Are they cheap? No. Are they some of the most impressive expressions we've come across in the past year? Absolutely. If you're a hardcore mezcal fan, these need to be in your collection. Full stop.

95AK 93V

These Neta bottlings are something else. Artisanal to the core. Each one comes from a single batch (i.e. one harvest and one oven load of piñas), all harvested and made around the Miahuatlán village of Logoche, so every batch is a truly singular expression. This batch was distilled in May 2020 by Heriberto Garcia Sanchez from a 60/40 blend of wild, two-year capón Bicuixe (A. karwinskii) and cultivated Espadin (A. angustifolia) grown on the region’s red volcanic soils. It’s a classic mezcal of real terroir expression. The explosive aromatic profile leads with roasted artichoke, dill, and stewed blue and black fruits. There’s incredible depth here on a foundation of highly complex smoke, which supports everything from rosemary and fresh pine tips to crispy bacon, asphalt, and blueberry sorbet w/ mint. The palate is enigmatic, first taking on deep black currant, cola spice, and volcanic minerality (almost Etna Rosso-like) on medium-full weight and a viscous middle. However, the texture becomes extraordinarily energetic and racy with air, sporting lively clove, juniper berry, and fresh-grated ginger to a long finish of outstanding depth, with wildly contrasting mint, meaty iron, and pickled pepper. It’s all over the place in most charming way, just an endlessly fun spirit to capture your sensory imagination. Handcrafted mezcal ancestrale of the highest caliber.

Gauby’s Vieilles Vignes Rouge, mostly Carignan made from vines up to 120 years old, is a complete departure from the sunny, forward disposition of the Calcinaires. This is a dark, brooding, feral wine with an untamed edge that just screams of (or from) the wilderness. The nose is quite closed at first, so it needs some air (preferably a decant), but the aromatic profile soon reveals deep, dark currant and all manner of wild berries. The real story, however, is the intensely mineral core of iron, rocky granite, and wild game that powers the wine’s personality. Around the edges, new leather and faint tones of crushed rose petal add nuance. The palate is also shy at first, coming around to offer up a mirror expression of the aromatic profile, in nearly the exact same progression. For such a sauvage wine, the structural precision is very impressive, with the firm tannins indicating serious cellar potential. It’s a specimen now, but it deserves a few years to come into its own.

Full stop.

These Neta bottlings are something else. Artisanal to the core. Each one comes from a single batch (i.e. one harvest and one oven load of piñas), all harvested and made around the Miahuatlán village of Logoche, so every batch is a truly singular expression. This batch was distilled in June 2023 by Wilfredo Garcia Sanchez entirely from Agave tequilana grown on red volcanic soils by the capón method. The piñas were roasted over mesquite wood in a conical pit oven for six days, followed by double distillation on a pair of copper pot stills. An explosive aromatic profile starts with sweet roasted agave, mineral spirits, dried raisins, and spiced orange peel. Good luck trying to pin it down to a “style” because it throws one curve-ball after another, including oily petrol, charred tomato, spent charcoal, ripe blueberry, and fine gravel. Don’t try to make sense of it. Just take the ride. The palate is every bit as explosive as the nose with big blue and black fruits, both ripe and dried – black currant, black raspberry, prunes, and dates – followed by secondary flavors of crushed rocks, mint, iodine, and pink peppercorn. The beautiful flavor depth, as impressive as it is, takes a backseat to the mouthfeel, which literally has everything in spades – an insane texture, incredible weight, effortless balance, mouth-filling viscosity, and an endless finish. Utterly intense and measured at the same time. Handcrafted mezcal ancestrale of the highest caliber.
