2015 Xavier Vignon Arcane XIX Le Soleil (750ml)
Grenache from Côtes du Rhône, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Regular readers of these pages are no stranger to the stunning wines being produced by Xavier Vignon, who has established a flawless reputation working with such luminaries as Marcoux, Grand Veneur, Raymond Usseglio, and others. Through these relationships, he has gained access to incredibly pristine parcels of very old-vine plantings across the valley, where he works with centenarian vines of Grenache and Syrah as well as 75- to 85-year-old plots of multiple other varieties.

Soleil is composed of 80% Grenache from 100-year-old vines, 10% Mourvèdre from 80-year-old vines, and 10% Syrah from 50-year-old vines, all which comes together to yield just one bottle per vine. Terroir selection is based on mineral salt concentration and density in vineyards from nine villages. Xavier is looking for freshness through both altitude and exposure, and it certainly seems he found it.

"Maybe the best Côte du Rhône Villages I've ever tasted..." - Wine Advocate

This beauty is a ridiculous bargain, and it just might be the best Côtes-du-Rhône Villages that you have ever tasted too. I have blind-tasted colleagues on this several times, just to break the monotony of the wines that they peddle, if I'm being honest, and their responses say it all. The aromatics alone sing Châteauneuf, specifically the serious terroir east of town, very La Cras-like. Of course I press them for a price range, and $40 to $50 is typically the consensus. They are basically spot on, as such a gorgeous wine should cost that much, but our domaine-direct relationship with Xavier brings it to us at a jaw-dropping, sub-$20 price for our private clients.

94WA 94RAS 93JD

The 2015 Cotes du Rhone Villages Arcane XVIII Le Soleil is youthfully dark in color and fruit-forward, but it also shows softening, silky tannins. It's full bodied but not overblown, with a sensationally seductive mouthfeel. Black cherries define the fruit, joined by hints of dark chocolate and enough garrigue to give it a seriously savory character despite the fruit. This is an old-vine blend of 80% Grenache with 10% each Syrah and Mourvèdre, aged 15 months in one-third new oak, the rest in concrete or foudre. Maybe the best Côte du Rhône Villages I've ever tasted, it looks to have the stuffing to go another 10 years.

94 points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (Issue # 233 - Oct 2017)

Coming from 100-year-old Grenache vines (there’s 10% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre in the blend) mostly in the northern part of the Southern Rhône, the 2015 Côtes du Rhône Villages Arcane le Soleil saw 15 months in one-third each of new barrels, concrete tanks, and stainless-steel tanks. This inky colored beauty offers a terrific perfume of blueberries, scorched earth, graphite, and crushed violets. Deep, full-bodied, incredibly pure, and elegant, with silky tannin, it’s a sensational Côtes du Rhône that’s better than most Chateauneuf du Pape in the vintage. It will be better in another year or two and keep for 8-10 years.

2022 Hartford Chardonnay (750ml)
Chardonnay from Russian River, California
B-21 Top Recommendation

"Full-bodied, with a ripe, classic feel, it has a nice, rounded mouthfeel and offers a lovely sense of place." - Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck.com

From the Sonoma estate renowned for crafting Chardonnay from exceptional vineyard sites, the 92-point 2022 Hartford Court Russian River Valley Chardonnay offers luscious, creamy fruit with bright acidity on an elegant finish with lingering notes of honey and spice, a beautifully balanced expression sourced from AVAs throughout the Russian River Valley.

Located in the town of Forestville about 15 miles from the Pacific Coast, the Hartford Family Winery was founded by Don and Jenny Hartford in 1994, specializing in single vineyard releases from a range of small vineyards throughout the Russian River Valley. Veteran winemaker Jeff Stewart employs the same meticulous artisan techniques for the Russian River Valley blend as the vineyard-designated cuvées, hand-harvesting the grapes at night and early morning, fermenting with indigenous yeasts and bottling without fining and minimal filtration. Employing regular lees stirring to add layered complexity, Stewart and winemaker Tiann Lordan aged the 2022 for 10 months in 28% new French oak, yielding intense, lush fruit with subtle minerality and a supple texture, finishing with refreshing, well-integrated acidity.

Summing up Hartford Family Winery’s reputation for quality and consistency, Wine Enthusiast’s Virginie Boone declared “there may be no better bang for your buck in Russian River Valley Chardonnay.” In other words, it's an unbeatable value for lovers of California Chard seeking a great deal.

92JD 92WI 92RAS

Coming from across the neighborhoods of the Russian River Valley, the 2022 Chardonnay Russian River Valley is ripe with aromas of toasted spice, orange rind, preserved lemon, honeysuckle, and baked apples. Full-bodied, with a ripe, classic feel, it has a nice, rounded mouthfeel and offers a lovely sense of place. Drink 2024-2030.

92 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Jun 2024)

The 2022 Chardonnay comes bounding out of the glass with eager-to-please notes of juicy ripe pears, yellow apples, and powdered ginger with touches of acacia honey and lightly buttered toast. The medium-bodied palate has lovely harmony, with a satiny texture and a spicy kick to the finish. This wine was barrel fermented and aged in French oak. Native strains were used for alcoholic and malolactic fermentation and the wine is unfined and unfiltered. The Russian River Valley Chardonnay is a barrel selection from all of Hartford Court's Estate Designated Vineyard properties and select growers from all RRV neighborhoods: Middle Reach, Green Valley, Laguna Ridge, Santa Rosa Plain, and Sebastopol Hills.

92 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Apr 2024)

2020 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 (750ml)
Shiraz from South Australia, Australia
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"...an improbably fluid wine that has entirely unexpected elements of grace. All the components of fruit, oak, tannins and acidity – the last particularly important – are in synergistic union."- James Halliday

Known by fans of Australian Shiraz for its muscular, boldly structured wines, Penfolds’ 94+ pt. 2020 Shiraz Bin 28 delivers rich, ripe generous dark fruit and velvety, plush tannins, sourced from a blend of multi-regional and multi-vineyard fruit in the same manner as the flagship Grange and crafted in the same “distinctly powerful style” according to Vinous critic Josh Raynolds at an affordable price.

Dating back to 1884, Penfolds' founders Dr. Christopher Penfold and his wife Mary were among the first to establish vineyards in Adelaide, planting vine cuttings they brought from France and England near the village of Magill around a stone cottage they called The Grange, originally crafting the wine as a "tonic" for the doctor’s patients. Expanding into the next century as a leader in the Australian wine industry, Penfolds' pioneering winemaker Max Schubert crafted the initial release of Bin 28 in 1959, named for the Bin or “Batch Identification Number” referring to its storage area in Penfolds' cellars and sourced from the historic Barossa Valley Kalimna vineyard. Now blending Shiraz from four diverse regions with nearly half still coming from the Barossa Valley, winemaker Matt Woo aged the 2020 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 for 12 months in 16% new American oak casks, yielding lush floral and spice aromas with layers of earthy dark fruit and well-integrated tannins promising longevity

Exhibiting Penfolds' “remarkable mix of character, consistency and value” according to the Wine Spectator’s Harvey Steiman, the powerfully built 94+ pt. 2020 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 28 showcases this iconic producer's famously rich and robust style, certain to please Aussie Shiraz fans and delivering outstanding value.

94WA 94WS 94AWC 93JS 92V

The Barossa has the ability to convey a sense of place, dirt and air in the glass. The trick is to not get in the way—a cooper does not terroir make. Despite not being the dominant region in this blend (for specificity: McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Clare Valley), the Barossa makes a potent contribution. Here, in the 2020 Bin 28 Kalimna Shiraz, the concentrated, dry and warm vintage is on show and provides a splay of earthy, dense fruit, stretched over a framework of savory tannin. Despite Penfolds's reputation for big tannins/big oak, the fruit here overpowers both and streams out over the long finish. The heart of Barossa is here. Very good. Will get better.

94+ points, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate (Jul 2022)

Ripe and generous, but the aromatics take this to the next level, with notes of cardamom, paprika and dried rose petal, plus touches of candied violet and cocoa powder, to complement the core of fleshy blackberry, black cherry and cassis. The tannins are dense but velvety, and this finishes with warm chocolaty notes. Drink now through 2035. 9,287 cases imported.

94 points, MaryAnn Worobiec, Wine Spectator (Dec 2022)

Sourced from vineyards in McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Clare Valley. Matured for 12 months in American hogsheads (16% new). Penfolds' team of winemakers have come up with an improbably fluid wine that has entirely unexpected elements of grace. All the components of fruit, oak, tannins and acidity – the last particularly important – are in synergistic union. No blowing of trumpets here.

94 points, James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion (Aug 2022)

A homage to warmer-region, South Australian shiraz, this has a rich and smooth delivery of ripe blackberries and red-to-dark plums on the nose. The wine has taken its 12 months in American oak (16% new) well and truly in its stride. Plush and suave mouth-feel here, this is effortless and a style that sits right in the Penfolds sweet spot. A blend of McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Clare Valley. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

93 points, James Suckling (Oct 2022)

Opaque ruby. Oak-spiced cherry, blackberry and mocha aromas, along with coconut, licorice and cracked pepper accents. Deep and weighty on the palate, offering intense black and blue fruit, mocha and oak spice flavors that show an appealing sweetness but are slow to open. In a distinctly powerful style, delivering youthfully chewy tannins and a long, chewy finish that echoes the licorice and dark berry notes.

2019 La Rioja Alta Reserva Vina Alberdi (750ml)
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Called “one of the most traditional addresses in Rioja” by the Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez, the lush 92 pt. 2019 La Rioja Alta Reserva Vina Alberdi delivers outstanding bang for the buck for fans of classically crafted Rioja, an elegant ageworthy Riserva offering fresh, aromatic red fruit with balsamic notes of vanilla, caramel and spice balanced by soft, fine tannins on a long, silky finish, already drinking beautifully and value priced for everyday enjoyment.

Founded as a cooperative effort of five enterprising families in 1890, La Rioja Alta merged with the Ardanza Winery in 1904 and became renowned for their signature Vina Ardanza Reserva, crafting their first release of the Vina Alberdi in 1970 as a fresher expression of Tempranillo while maintaining their exceptional criteria for extended aging. Spanning over 400 hectares of organically farmed vineyards, La Rioja Alta sourced the Tempranillo for the 2019 Vina Alberdi from estate vineyards situated in Rodezno and Labastida at 500 to 600 meters above sea level, the low yielding Tempranillo vines averaging over 40 years of age planted in a nitrogen-rich mix of clay and limestone that retains water throughout the hot growing season and enhances concentration. Employing strict selection in the vineyards, the hand harvested grapes are transported under refrigeration and fermented with natural yeasts before being transferred to barrels custom crafted in La Rioja Alta’s onsite cooperage. Employing four rackings from barrel to barrel while separating the sediment by candlelight, the refined 2019 La Rioja Alta Vina Alberdi was aged in new American oak barrels for the first year and in four-year-old American oak barrels for the second year, yielding “a delicate Rioja Red” according to Vinous critic Joaquin Hidalgo revealing intensely aromatic, juicy spiced fruit with vibrant acidity and layers of ripe tannins promising a decade of longevity.

Described by critic Tim Atkin as exhibiting the “elegance and American oak sweetness” of the estate’s flagship Vina Ardanza, the appealing 92 pt. 2019 La Rioja Alta Reserva Vina Alberdi offers the full-bodied richness of age worthy Tempranillo in an approachable style, an affordable luxury declared a “Smart Buy” by the Wine Spectator’s Alison Napjus and an outstanding value for Rioja fans seeking a delicious everyday pour.

Attractive aromas of sweet spices, smoke and seaweed. Some roasted nuts. Hints of Iberico ham. Medium-bodied with a nice rounded character to the tannins and juicy fruit. Pure tempranillo. Drink now.

92 points, James Suckling (Oct 2023)

The 2019 Reserva Viña Alberdi is 100% Tempranillo, sourced from Labastida, Rioja Alavesa and aged for two years in American oak barrels. Garnet in color, the bouquet features vanilla and ripe plum notes along with hints of balsamic and caramel. Dry and juicy on the palate, the polished tannins and silky flow lead to a fairly nimble finish—a delicate Rioja red.

91 points, Joaquín Hidalgo, Vinous (Apr 2024)

Offers hints of toast, smoke and spices that lace flavors of soft cherry and plum fruit, mandarin orange peel and dried flowers and herbs. A well-knit, medium-bodied red framed by lightly chewy tannins. Drink now through 2029. 46,000 cases made, 16,500 cases imported.

2018 Carpineto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva (750ml)
Sangiovese from Montepulciano, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

"Complex and harmonious ... Beautifully balanced, with enough tannins to age another decade or longer."-Wine Spectator

A rich and age-worthy Sangiovese blend, the 95-point 2018 Carpineto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva offers dense, earthy fruit balanced by juicy acidity and smooth, refined tannins, a top-scoring red from the lesser-known Tuscany region producing “lively, refreshing, engaging wines” according to the Wine Independent’s Susan Hulme that rivals the reds of neighboring Tuscan regions at a fraction of the cost.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano has experienced a steady rise in quality over the last decade with its polished, terroir-driven Sangiovese wines “of real character that also offer tremendous quality for the money” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous. Set in the rolling hills at around 250 meters above sea level, Carpineto’s sustainably farmed 84.5 hectares of vineyards are planted mainly to Sangiovese in a mix of sand and tufa clay soil, surrounded by a biodiverse area that includes a small natural lake and a 12-hectare olive grove. Blending mostly Sangiovese with the indigenous Canaiolo, winemaker Caterina Sacchet aged the opulent 2018 Carpineto Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva in a mix of used Slavonian and French oak barrels for 18 to 24 months before bottling, extending the aging for an additional year beyond the minimum three year requirement for a Riserva, yielding a beautifully classic Sangiovese.

A pure and transparent expression, the alluring and age-worthy 2018 Riserva is among the top-rated Vino Nobiles of the vintage and an outstanding value, ready for Sangiovese fans and anyone seeking a taste of Tuscany to enjoy time and time again for years to come at an exceptional price.

95D 94WS

Ripe, powerful, and earthy, with a woody, herbal nose and a hint of a medicinal quality. The smoky palate offers intense blackcurrants, tar, balsamic sweetness, and a little touch of farmyard. A youthful wine, compact and powerful.

95 points, Decanter (2022)

Complex and harmonious, this polished red is saturated with black cherry, plum, leather, tobacco, incense and iron aromas and flavors, revealing fruit, savory and mineral elements on the aftertaste. 2021 Felsina Chianti Classico Berardenga (750ml)
Sangiovese from Chianti, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Crafted by one of Chianti Classsico’s “flagship estates” according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, these highly rated Felsina selections are priced to deliver top value for Italian wine collectors and Felsina fans, a range of Tuscan treasures from one of the region’s most esteemed producers unbeatably priced whether choosing a few favorites or for mixing a case.

Located in the butterfly-shaped Castelnuovo Berardenga subregion in southernmost Chianti Classico, the historic 600-hectare Fattoria di Felsina estate has remained family owned since its purchase by Domenico Poggiali Felsina in 1966, rising to the top of appellation under the direction of Giuseppe Mazzocolin for over four decades and now run by Domenico’s son Giovanni Poggiali. Produced from the estate’s 95 hectares of biodynamically farmed vineyards, the fresh and refined 93 pt. 2021 Felsina Chianti Classico Berardenga is described as “a fantastic entry point for the Felsina range” by Jeb Dunnuck, a lush Sangiovese boasting earthy dark fruit and vibrant acidity that “readers should consider buying by the case,” according to Vinous critic Galloni. Earning the #22 spot on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2023, the rich and sultry 94 pt. 2020 Felsina Chianti Classico Riserva offers soft fruit flavors with “pretty mineral notes and light spice” according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner boasting the structure to evolve over the next few decades. Crafted from 100% Sangiovese grown in Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi, Vinous critic Antonio Galloni calls the mineral-driven 96 pt. 2020 Felsina Fontalloro “a sensual, enveloping wine” revealing savory Sangiovese fruit hinting of wild herbs that captures “Sangiovese’s untamed side” according to Decanter’s Michaela Morris. The lesser known jewel of the Felsina portfolio and a “terrific, terrific value” according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner, the silky 95 pt. 2020 Felsina Maestro Raro is a powerful, refined expression of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon “of unusual complexity as well as pedigree” according to critic Galloni built to enjoy over the next decade.

Boasting an “extraordinary ability to convey the essence of variety, place and vintage” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, these top rated Felsina wines reflect the estate’s rich legacy as standard bearers in Chianti Classico, meticulously crafting wines of “distinction and elegance” and all delivering outstanding value.

93JS 92V 91WA 91WS 91D

A firm and silky red with cherry, dried flower and orange peel aromas and flavors. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and a fresh and focused finish. Needs a little time to soften but I already enjoy the energy here. Drink or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (Aug 2023)

The 2021 Chianti Classico Berardenga is boisterous and expressive right out of the glass. Dark fruit, earthiness, leather, spice and tobacco convey tons of Castelnuovo Berardenga character. The 2021 keeps getting better in the glass. It's a super-classic example of the house style and a wine readers should consider buying by the case. The Berardenga bottling can be a bit wild, but in 2021 has an added touch of sophistication that is undeniable.

92 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Aug 2023)

The Fèlsina 2021 Chianti Classico Berardenga has a spicy or crunchy side that I often find with Sangiovese. There is a lot of fruit brightness here with cassis, red cherry, mineral, dried tobacco and grilled rosemary. This is an easy-drinking Tuscan red with the natural acidity and brightness to pair with a classic lasagna or eggplant parmigiana.

91 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (May 2023)

This has a saline undercurrent to the cherry, cinnamon, rose hip, earth and Tuscan scrub flavors, all backed by a solid base of tannins and vibrant acidity. Long, energetic finish. Best from 2024 through 2030. 22,500 cases made, 8,000 cases imported.

91 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Oct 2023)

In the southeastern confines of the denomination, the Fèlsina estate has been an unwavering proponent of 100% Sangiovese. Even the annata captures the wildness of this grape combined with the Mediterranean character of this warm and luminous corner of Chianti Classico. The 2021 starts with smoky nuances, earth and subtle oak, then progresses to fragrant mint and thyme. It is concentrated and ripe, yet balanced by freshness and agility. An underlying firmness releases gradually to reveal a savoury finish of sundried tomato.

2022 Vina Robles Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Paso Robles, California
B-21 Top Recommendation

From a warm vintage yielding lush Cabs “built on elegance and ripe fruit” according to Eric Guido of Vinous, the alluring 93 pt. 2022 Vina Robles Cabernet Sauvignon hits the mark for Paso Robles fans seeking an outstanding everyday pour, revealing rich, aromatic dark fruit hinting of balsamic spice balanced by vibrant acidity on a silken, velvety finish, a widely appealing, bargain priced Cab that over delivers value.

Established east of downtown Paso Robles in the mid-1990’s, Vina Robles’ founders Hans Nef and Hans–R. Michel planted the first of what would later become six vineyards in Paso Robles, gaining notoriety as one of Paso’s top growers and releasing their first critically acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon in 1999. Now spanning over 1,800 acres of vineyards, Hans’ daughters Michele and Nicole sourced the 2022 Vina Robles Cab from three sustainably farmed estate vineyards in distinctly different areas of the AVA: the hilly Huerhuero Vineyard benefiting from moderating Pacific breezes, the high altitude Creston Valley Vineyard boasting shallow, granulated limestone soils that limit yields, and the Bear Valley Vineyard known for producing small, flavorful berries. Picking the optimally ripened grapes early in the morning to ensure quality, winemaker Kevin Willenborg aged the parcels for 8 months in a mix of French, American and Hungarian oak barrels before conducting extensive blending trials, adding a little Petit Verdot to the final blend and aging the 2022 Vina Robles Cabernet Sauvignon an additional 12 months longer in barrel, yielding a juicy and harmonious Cab with plush texture, opulent fruit and ripe tannins that will have Paso Robles Cab lovers reaching for another pour.

Summed up by James Suckling as “very balanced and complete” and ready to enjoy over the next five or more years, the enticing 93 pt. 2022 Vina Robles Cabernet Sauvignon continues its legacy as one of the region’s top values, a rich and satisfying Paso Cab at an unbeatable price.

2022 Raventos i Blanc Blanc de Blancs (750ml)
Xarel-lo from Catalonia, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Renowned as the benchmark for vineyard-driven sparkling wines in Spain, these impeccably crafted 93-point Raventos selections express their mineral-rich terroir in a fresh, elegant style, offering richly concentrated fruit with balanced acidity on a fine beaded mousse and delivering “unmatched value” according to the Wine Spectator’s Keith Newton at unbeatable, best on the market pricing.

Boasting a 500 year history stretching over 21 generations as growers in Catalonia, the Raventos family are pioneers of the Cava industry, producing the first bottle of Cava under the Cordoniu label in the late 1800’s by applying the traditional method used to make Champagne to a blend of classic Penedes grape varieties. Selling their interest in Cordoniu in 1984 in response to a Cava’s overall decline in quality and reputation, the Raventos family refocused on making vineyard-driven sparkling wines from their 90-hectare biodynamically farmed estate across from their old winery and established Raventós i Blanc in 1986, officially withdrawing from the Cava classification in 2012 while championing the creation of a new D.O. with higher standards. A blend of 49% Xarel·lo, 34% Macabeo and 12% Parellada with the addition of 5% old vine Monastrell to add complexity and enhance its rosy color, the Wine Spectator’s Alison Napjus calls the lush 95 pt. 2022 Raventos i Blanc de Nit Rosado Brut Rose “a bright and harmonious sparkler” with “snappy acidity” and a refined, creamy texture resulting from extended less aging, its name translating as ‘Of the Night’ in Catalan in reference to the estate’s cool evening harvest times considered optimal for preserving freshness. Sourced from vines averaging over 40 years of age and composed of 40% Xarel·lo, 39% Macabeu, 15% Parellada and 6% Malvasia de Sitges, the fresh and silky 93 pt. 2022 Raventos i Blanc Blanc de Blancs is a bright, aromatic sparkler with impeccable balance described as “pure, clean and pleasant” and declared “complex and expressive beyond its price point” by the Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutierrez.

Among “the finest and most elegant sparkling wines being made in Spain” according to Vinous critic Joaquin Hidalgo, this enticing 93 pt. duo from leading Spanish producer Raventos delivers incredible bang for the buck among its sparkling wine peers, bargain priced for mixing a case and a sure bet for sparkling wine lovers seeking to pop the cork more often.

93 points, Decanter (May 2024)

The 2022 Blanc de Blancs comes from the lower terraces of the property and grapes purchased from local growers. It's a blend of 50% Xarel.lo, 30% Macabeo, 15% Parellada and 5% Malvasía de Sitges that refermented in bottle where it was kept with the lees for at least 18 months. It has a pale and bright color with some green tints denoting youth and is clean and fruit-driven with a Mediterranean nose with notes of fennel and aromatic herbs and a tasty palate. It gives good pleasure for the price; it has tension, balance and fruit but is not heavy and has a tasty, almost salty twist in the finish. This is pure, clean and pleasant, complex and expressive beyond its price point. 210,000 bottles produced.

92 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (May 2024)

The 2022 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs is composed of 50% Xarel·lo, 30% Macabeu, 15% Parellada and 5% Malvasía de Sitges, sourced from Conca del Riu Anoia in Penedès. Aged for two years on the lees, this sparkling wine reveals aromas of lime and green apple, complemented by hazelnut and bakery tones. Dry and delicate, the ethereal flow contrasts with a crunchy, lightly bubbly palate. Saline in character, it lingers with a chalky texture. This is a precise, flavorful sparkling wine from Penedès.

This vibrant sparkler is sleek and minerally, with fine mousse carrying a well-meshed range of delicate poached pear, persimmon, lemon curd, beeswax and white blossom notes. Described as a “crystal clear expression” of Rioja by Joaquin Hidalgo of Vinous, Bodegas Muga fans and Rioja collectors won’t need convincing to stock up on the irresistible 95 pt. 2019 Bodegas Muga Seleccion Especial, a silky and concentrated Rioja offering fresh, ripe dark fruit with earthy minerality and integrated, polished tannins built to enjoy over the next decade and beyond at a terrific price.

Located among the region’s most historic wineries, the iconic tower of Bodegas Muga marks its location in Haro's Barrio de la Estacion, the winery complex built in 1971 with an on-site cooperage managed by Spain’s only master cooper and where all of Muga’s oak barrels and casks are made. Produced from vines averaging over 37 years of age, the 2019 Bodegas Muga Seleccion Especial is a blend of mostly Tempranillo with Garnacha and Graciano sourced from clay-limestone terraces located on the cooler slopes of Montes Obarenes and Sierra Cantabria, the specially selected grapes coming primarily from high altitude vineyards between 430 and 450 meters above sea level stretching from Villalba to Abalos. Fermenting with indigenous yeasts in oak vats, third generation winemaker Jorge Muga aged the enticing and long-lasting 2019 Bodegas Muga Seleccion Especial for 26 months in 40% new French oak barrels and 18 months longer in bottle before release, yielding a “complex and nuanced” Rioja according to the Wine Advocate’s Luiz Gutierrez with “abundant, fine-grained tannins and a long, dry and tasty finish.”

The subtle and harmonious 2019 Selección Especial reflects a very complete and good vintage. It has to be one of the finest vintages for this wine. 2019 is a powerful vintage with balance and freshness. The grapes ripened thoroughly and developed a full set of aromas and flavors. It's complex and nuanced, with abundant, fine-grained tannins and a long, dry and tasty finish. Selección applies to the vineyards but also the barrels and everything that contributes to this wine; it's not only a selection of lots, which was the case before the 1994 vintage. 274,992 bottles produced. It was bottled between April and June 2022 after 26 months in barrel.

Owned by the Malet-Roquefort family for three centuries, Chateau La Gaffeliere has undergone a complete renovation including extensive replanting of its vineyards since 2004 under the direction of legendary consultant Stephane Derenoncourt, its steady rise in quality over the last decade described as a “sleeping giant” awakening by the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley. Boasting an exceptional terroir known as the golden triangle between the hills of Chateaux Pavie and Ausone, the Grand Vin of La Gaffeliere is sourced from the estate’s classified 22 hectares of the 38 hectare vineyard planted to 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc, the vineyard team employing rigorous selection with at least a third of the hand harvested grapes not making the cut for the Grand Vin. A blend of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc aged in 60% new French oak for 18 months, the elegant 96+ pt. 2019 Chateau La Gaffeliere is “a stunning, riveting wine in every way” according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous with a rich core of vibrant fruit and layers of silky tannins described as “worth cellaring for sure” by the Wine Spectator’s James Molesworth, earning a spot on the Wine Spectator’s Top 100 of 2022. Named one of the Wine Independent’s Top 50 Value Wines of 2023 and earning a spot on James Suckling's Top 100 Wines of France 2023, the 98 pt. 2020 Chateau La Gaffeliere is called “sleek, silky and excellent quality” by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson and declared “a thrilling Saint-Emilion readers should snatch up” by Jeb Dunnuck, promising “great things as it develops” over the next decades according to the Wine Enthusiast’s Roger Voss.

Described as “striking an expert balance between power and finesse” by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson, the impressive 96+ pt. 2019 Chateau La Gaffeliere and 98 pt. 2020 Chateau La Gaffeliere are expertly crafted to express their exceptional terroir, this offer a welcome opportunity for Bordeaux lovers seeking outstanding value to acquire two age worthy Right Bank blends that seriously overdeliver.

98V 98WI 97JS 96WE

The 2020 La Gaffelière is superb. Rich, dense and explosive. Black cherry, gravel, licorice, grilled herbs and menthol race out of the glass. Deep, pliant and explosive, the 2020 is magnificent. At this stage, the 2020 is an infant, but that won't be a problem in a few years. This vivid, statuesque Saint-Émilion is nothing short of thrilling.

98 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2023)

The 2020 La Gaffeliere is composed of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it soars out of the glass with expressive notes of redcurrant jelly, plum preserves, and kirsch, plus nuances of dark chocolate, violets, pencil lead, and fragrant soil with a waft of crushed rocks. The medium-bodied palate is so tightly wound, featuring very fine layers of red and black fruit intertwined with floral and mineral nuances, supported by highly pixilated, super-ripe tannins and amazing tension, finishing very long and with the energy of an atomic bomb. This is stunning!

98 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Jun 2023)

Deep and intense notes of plums and blackberries with dark chocolate, toasted spices, walnut, crushed graphite and wet stones. Full-bodied with layers of ripe, velvety tannins that flow in a firm stream throughout the palate. Very structured. 97 points, James Suckling (May 2023)

2022 Ponzi Pinot Noir Laurelwood (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Willamette, Oregon
B-21 Top Recommendation

Credited with helping to “put Oregon on the wine map” by the Wine Enthusiast, Ponzi’s 50-year legacy of crafting exceptional Pinot Noir in Oregon’s Willamette Valley lives on in the elegant 94 pt. 2022 Ponzi Point Noir Laurelwood, beautifully balancing alluring aromatic spiced, earthy fruit with layered velvety tannins and punching “well above its weight class” according to Decanter’s Clive Pursehouse at an unbeatable price.

Relocating from California in the 1960’s, founders Dick and Nancy Ponzi were among a small group of pioneering winemakers who rejected the advice of UC Davis experts that the region was too cold for growing Pinot Noir, purchasing a 20-acre farm in Beaverton southwest of Portland and releasing the first Ponzi Vineyard Pinot in 1974. Expanding to over 130 acres of sustainably certified vineyards over the last decades and now owned by the legendary Champagne house Bollinger, the 2022 Ponzi Pinot Noir Laurelwood was sourced primarily from estate vineyards along with grower partners exclusively from the newly established Laurelwood AVA in the Chehalem Mountains, its distinctive soil of windblown loess over ancient basalt bedrock adding abundant spice notes to the Pinot Noir as well as a backbone of dark, brambly tannins. Named “one of the brightest stars among the new generation in Oregon,” Burgundy-trained winemaker Luisa Ponzi fermented the hand sorted grapes in small lots with native yeasts before aging the richly textured 2022 Ponzi Pinot Noir Laurelwood in 30% new French oak for 10 months, yielding “a tension filled core of tart red berry fruit and spice elevated by juicy acidity” according to Vinous critic Eric Guido ready to enjoy over the next five or more years.

From the legendary producer Robert Parker called “a reference point for American Pinot Noir,” the lush and refined 94 pt. 2022 Ponzi Pinot Noir Laurelwood “shows elegance and a polished structure” according to the Wine Spectator’s Tim Fish, checking all the boxes for fans seeking a Burgundy styled Oregon Pinot at a bargain price and continuing the Ponzi’s long legacy of over delivering value.

94JS 94D 93WS

Bright and vibrant nose with strawberries, blood oranges, crushed spices, pine resin and dried herbs. Hints of bergamot. Very fine and tense phenolic structure, almost giving some chalky chewiness to it, but it’s very textural and refined. Medium-bodied with a mineral backbone. Drink or hold.

94 points, James Suckling (Mar 2024)

The 2022 bottling of the Ponzi entry-level Pinot Noir punches well above its weight class. The savoury and earth-driven elements buoy the dark fruits that predominate on the wine's finish. Rich soil notes and dried violets introduce the effusively aromatic wine, with hints of smoky clove and freshly turned soil. The palate offers redolent muddled blackberries with mint, whisps of graphite mineral tones and a finish of warm spices.

94 points, Clive Pursehouse, Decanter (Jul 2024)

Shows elegance and a polished structure, with refined flavors of raspberry and cherry accented by rose petal, dusky spice and orange peel notes that sail toward fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2032. 7,628 cases made.

2022 Raventos i Blanc de Nit Rosado Brut Rose (750ml)
Macabeo from Catalonia, Spain

95D

After centuries of grape growing and playing a role in the creation of the Cava DO, the Raventós family chose to leave the appellation in 2012 and champion the ‘future DO’ of Conca del Riu Anoia. Only indigenous varieties are grown and the vineyard is certified biodynamic. Yields were down more than 20% in this drought year but the fruit was very healthy. A little local Monastrell (5%) provides colour and texture, rounded out by 18 months of ageing. Christine Parkinson: Mandarin, vanilla and blood orange. Fresh, vibrant palate: citrus, bitter melon. Acidity provides balance and poise. A lick of tannin supports the creamy texture. Very long. Sarah Jane Evans MW: Subtle, restrained, perfumed. Lightly grippy with a savoury pastry note; lacks the usual sweet fruit. Stylish, gastronomic. Blossoms in the glass. Delicious. Valentin Radosav: Elegant strawberry and red flower aromas. Balanced fruit profile and refreshing acidity.

Notes of raspberries and cherries with red licorice, dried orange peel and spices. Medium- to full-bodied with meaty structure. Tannins are wide and velvety with a juicy, red-fruited mid-palate. Fresh and crunchy at the end. Drink or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (Aug 2023)

From a vintage that delivered great results across the region, the 2021 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli is a bit darker, more powerful and concentrated than your standard entry-level Chianti Classico. Cherry and dark plum cede to pretty mineral tones. That extra intensity is part of the house style and is a little gift for those who appreciate more meat on those Sangiovese bones. In fact, that grape is blended with a small 10% part of Malvasia Nera and Colorino in this ample 290,000-bottle release hitting the market now.

2022 J. Bookwalter Foreshadow Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Columbia, Washington State
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Crafted in a cooler 2022 Washington State vintage producing “aromatic, elegant and approachable” wines according to Eric Guido of Vinous, the silky and plush 93 pt. 2022 J. Bookwalter Foreshadow Cabernet Sauvignon offers aromatic ripe dark fruit layered with supple, integrated tannins, one of the year’s top scoring Columbia Valley Cabs unbeatably priced to enjoy often.

After building a solid reputation in viticulture in California’s San Joaquin Valley, pioneering Washington state grower Jerry Bookwalter moved to the Columbia Valley in the early 1970’s to manage the plantings of three famed Washington vineyards, Sagemoor, Bacchus and Dionysus, and eventually became manager of the Conner Lee Vineyard, renowned as the source of richly textured, balanced and complex wines. Providing grapes to many small, high-quality wineries including Leonetti Cellars and Woodward Canyon, Bookwalter was inspired to launch his own winery in 1982 and with the help of his son John, changed the winery’s focus to produce higher end reds from Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1990’s under the J. Bookwalter Winery label. A blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot, 5% Syrah and 3% Petit Verdot sourced primarily from the Conner Lee Vineyard, the refined and full-bodied 2022 J. Bookwalter Foreshadow was aged for 18 months in a mix of new and neutral French oak, yielding a luscious, structured Cab with a lingering, spiced finish and substantial velvety tannins built for a decade or more of evolution.

Described by the Wine Spectator’s Tim Fish as “a rich source for outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon reds at moderate prices,” the bold and appealing 93 pt. 2022 J. Bookwalter Foreshadow Cabernet Sauvignon tops the list of Columbia Valley Cabs that overdeliver value, a welcome opportunity for lovers of robust, age worthy Cabs seeking a great deal to stock up on one of the region’s best at a bargain price.

Savvy bargain hunters are by now well aware of the stellar quality for price to be found in the relatively new Cairanne appellation. Since its promotion to full cru status, the region has captured the attention of Southern Rhône insiders, and it’s Domaine Alary leading the way.

Father and son Denis and Jean-Etienne Alary are renowned for their track record of consistent excellence, and the flagship Estevenas Rouge defines the domaine’s style and reputation in the market. The 94-point 2021 rendition is “medium to full-bodied, wonderfully silky in feel, with a long, lingering finish … a real showstopper” according to Wine Advocate’s Joe Czerwinski, the Syrah-dominant blend benefitting from some of the oldest Syrah vines in the Southern Rhône. The 2022 La Brunote is a prime example of the Alarys’ wide-ranging repertoire and skill set. The 92-94WA, Mourvèdre-based blend excels in the warm vintage, especially at our market-best price. “Full-bodied and richly concentrated, it's almost creamy in texture, with a lingering finish. Yum,” declares Czerwinski. Finally, the 2022 Estevenas Blanc continues this cuvée’s track record as the benchmark Cairanne white, garnering 93 points for its beguiling complexity and depth combined with a refined sense of balance.

These new arrivals from an old favorite should have fans of the Southern Rhône taking notice. Alary is back at B-21 in a big way, with 2021s that set the pace for the appellation, and a pair of 2022s that are just the first glimpse of some stunning offerings on the horizon from this world-class value star.

96WI 96V 96JS 95WA 94WS #67 Top 100

The 2019 La Gaffeliere is composed of 60% Merlot and 40% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, it spills from the glass with alluring notions of black raspberries, boysenberry preserves, Morello cherries, and roses, plus suggestions of Ceylon tea, dried mint, and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is elegantly crafted and refreshing, bursting with bright, lively fruit, finishing long and achingly floral. This is an effortlessly gorgeous Saint-Emilion, not to be missed.

96+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Apr 2022)

The 2019 La Gaffelière is just as impressive as it was en primeur. Bright and tightly wound, La Gaffelière sizzles with energy. Dark red fruit, mocha, blood orange, mint and dried flowers lend striking aromatic presence. There is some youthful austerity here, but nothing time in bottle won't take care of. The 2019 doesn't quite match the stratospheric grandeur of the magical 2018, but it comes close.

96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

A vibrant, fragrant red with aromas of blackberries, currants, walnuts and mint chocolate. Medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins. Pretty walnut notes on the polished finish. Fantastic length. Driven acidity and focus. Try in 2025.

96 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

The 2019 La Gaffelière wafts from the glass with a rich bouquet of blackberries and cherries mingled with subtle hints of burning embers and loamy soil that's framed by a deft application of creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and seamless, it's a concentrated, vibrant wine built around bright acids and fine, powdery tannins. Its vivid fruit tones and classical balance make this Cabernet Franc-rich blend a promising candidate for sustained bottle age. Anyone who has tasted the great wines this estate produced in the 1950s and 1960s knows how great this site can be; and with stricter selection as well as the elimination of fruit from vines growing on the plain from the blend, that potential appears to be being unleashed at last.

95 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

This rolls out dense fig, boysenberry and red currant paste flavors laced with pronounced chalky minerality and notes of tobacco, dried anise and juniper. The serious tannic drive on the finish puts this in the 'classically austere' camp. Worth cellaring for sure, but patience is required. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2024 through 2040. 7,500 cases made, 500 cases imported.

99V 97WA 97WE

The 2018 La Gaffelière is hands down one of the wines of the vintage. Towering in its stature and vertical lift, the 2018 dazzles right out of the gate. Inky dark fruit, mocha, spice, licorice and leather all run through this deep, wonderfully pliant Saint-Émilion. The 2018 is rich, deep and beautifully resonant, with tremendous depth and tons of stature that builds, all framed by beams of supporting minerality that confer vibrancy. La Gaffelière is distinctive, alluring and arresting right out of the gate. It is another magnificent showing from this reborn estate. The blend is 63% Merlot and 37% Cabernet Franc. Magnifique!

99 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2018 La Gaffeliere is a little closed to begin, slowly unfurling to offer peeks at notions of stewed red and black plums, mulberries and Morello cherries, plus hints of damp earth, tar and bouquet garni. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is tightly wound, delivering crunchy red and black fruits with an approachable texture of fine-grained tannins and loads of freshness, finishing long with a lifted perfume. This is a refreshing, beautifully perfumed and skillfully crafted expression of the vintage. Give it 4-5 years in bottle and then enjoy it over the next 20 years+.

97 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2021)

This estate is on a roll. Replete with powerful tannins and dense black fruits, this latest release continues the succession of fine vintages. Perfumed, ripe with berry flavors and, more importantly, with rich tannins, the wine will age impressively. Drink from 2027.

Meikle Toir The Sherry One 5yr Single Malt Scotch (750ml)
From Speyside, Scotland
B-21 Top Recommendation

"I’ll say it straight away – this is more complex and composed than any five-year-old single malt should be." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

Fans of Speyside know the name Billy Walker, so they'll no doubt take notice at this new passion project from the master distiller at Glenallachie. Walker started Meikle Toir (Gaelic for Our Pursuit) to showcase Speyside malt in the peated style, something rarely found in this region and a complete departure from the well-known unpeated style at Glenallachie. For this range, Walker applies the utmost precision in his use of the peat and exercises some brilliant creative impulses in his aging regimens.

The Sherry One is, as you'd expect, quite a sherry bomb in the all the best ways. As B-21 Spirits Buyer Andrew Kitz notes, "The master of sherried Speyside malt nails it here in his expert application of the PX and Oloroso casks." We weren't the only ones impressed with this "gem of a whisky" as described in Whisky Advocate's 93-point review. As the market for aged Scotch is still running hot, savvy collectors and aficionados are looking to younger, overachieving stunners like The Sherry One to fill the gap, especially when they're made in world-class fashion by a living Scotch legend.

94AK 93WHA

First thing you might notice here is the age statement, so I’ll say it straight away – this is more complex and composed than any five-year-old single malt should be. Crafted at Glenallachie by legendary distiller Billy Walker, the entire Meikle Toir range is top flight, but The Sherry One is a cut above the rest. The master of peated Speyside malt nails it here in his expert application of the PX and Oloroso casks. Take a moment with the stunning orange/amber color, then dive into the dark, well-defined nose of rich cocoa dust, chocolate pudding, Aleppo pepper, spicy jerky, and spiced orange peel. Treacle, coconut, crème brulée, and subtle peat smoke all make an appearance too. The palate is just as head-turning with a dark fruit character that’s absent from the nose – blackberry, plum, and blueberry – followed by dense Oloroso tones. Burnt sugar, café mocha, toasted pistachio, and that same persistent dark fruit core all the way through. Incredibly opulent yet balanced, the finish is all intensity, drawn out into a long, slow-burning finale.

94 points, Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer (Dec 2024)

Chocolate brownie, smoked orange disc, ground cumin, mild smoked paprika, gentle peat smoke, and a dusting of cocoa on the nose of this gem of a whisky matured in Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry puncheons. On the palate, dark chocolate slides in with smoke, blackberry, burnt sugar, treacle, espresso, maple-coated pecans, and sizzling spices. Melted chocolate, peat smoke, plum skins, and baked orange on the finish.

2015 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cerequio (750ml)

“Some of the richest, deepest and most texturally beautiful wines”

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

While fans of Roberto Voerzio’s Cru wines need no introduction to the Barolo cult favorite, this offering for the 2020 Roberto Voerzio Barolo releases is a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire some of the Piedmont’s most sought after and age worthy Nebbiolo wines ranking Voerzio “at the pinnacle of achievement among the world’s most gifted winemakers” according to Vinous critic Antonio Galloni, all rated 98 pts. and above and delivered in perfect provenance to savor over the next decades.

After spending the first years of his career working alongside his brother Gianni, Roberto Voerzio established his own winery in the late 1980’s, crafting richly concentrated Cru Barolo “as seamless and sexy as they come” according to Jeb Dunnuck from 14 hectares of organically farmed Cru vineyards primarily in La Morra along with a parcel in nearby Cerequio. Pioneering the technique of green harvesting in the region and implementing staggeringly small yields, Voerzio cuts off entire bunches and meticulously trims those remaining into a rounder shape, employing extensive selection in the vineyards on multiple passes during the growing season that allows him to pick the optimally ripe grapes earlier and minimizes intervention in the cellar. Hand harvesting the Nebbiolo grapes at up to half of the maximum yields allowed, Roberto and his son Davide employ spontaneous fermentations and age the Barolos in a mix of new and used French barriques and casks for 22 to 27 months before returning them to stainless tank for 8 months without filtering or fining, the wines undergoing further aging in bottle and remaining fresh, finessed and deeply textured throughout their long-lived evolution.

Revealing the Cru’s signature delicate floral aromatics, the 98 pt. 2020 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Brunate offers layered dark fruit with elegant, refined tannins, while the 98 pt. 2020 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Cerequio reveals silky, softly textured fruit with distinct minerality, described as “one of the truly iconic wines of Barolo” by Antonio Galloni. Elegantly styled and hinting of wild berry, the 99 pt. 2020 Roberto Voerzio Barolo Fossati shows lightly spiced fruit with dusty minerality and the 99 pt. 2020 Roberto Voerzio Barolo La Serra boasts layers of dark fruit balanced by firm tannins, each rewarding a few years of patient cellaring with over two decades of longevity.

Reminding Barolo fans “of the dazzling heights achieved by the Nebbiolo grape” according to the Wine Advocate’s Monica Larner as “one of La Morra's most gifted artisans,” collectors of age worthy Cru Barolo won’t need convincing to scoop up these sumptuous 2020 Roberto Voerzio selections, showcasing Voerzio’s talent for transparently expressing each Cru’s unique qualities and offering the layered complexity and finesse that Nebbiolo lovers know promises many years of enjoyment to come.

98JS 97JD 96WA

Superb complexity on the nose with crushed berries, dried flowers, tar, licorice and aniseed. Full body, firm tannins and superb depth and intesity. Goes on for minutes and changes all the time. Drink from 2023.

98 points, James Suckling (Jun 2021)

Gorgeous notes of black cherries, tobacco, and licorice emerge from the 2015 Barolo Cerequio, and this beauty is about as seamless and sexy as they come. More spice, toasted almonds, and dried flower notes develop with time in the glass, and it has magical tannins, medium-bodied richness, and a great, great finish. Give bottles 2-4 years and it’s going to impress for a good 2-3 decades.

97 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2020)

The 2015 Barolo Cerequio shows impressive and firm construction; however, the wine remains delicate and finessed all the while. This is a real stunner with inner fiber that is as strong, but as softly textured, as the highest quality silk. Aromas of wild cherry, violets, licorice and tar are in a tight, nascent state at this young stage. This implies they will blossom with time, coming into focus with greater intensity and complexity as the wine continues its careful bottle aging. This wine shows an evident mineral signature at the back.

Perhaps the most robust and solid of the three wines by Roberto Voerzio tasted this year, the 2015 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is built like a little tank, or motor, that keeps moving forward no matter what. You taste that spirit and determination thanks to the elegantly aligned fruit and spice flavors that make up the wine's elaborate profile. However, I also taste the 2015 vintage characteristics of rich and concentrated fruit to a greater degree in the Rocche dell'Annunziata. There is a point of softness here that you don't get in Fossati or Cerequio. I tasted the open bottle again 24 hours later and was treated to beautiful notes of mint and balsam herb.

Similar notes of mulled black cherries, menthol, toasted spices, tobacco, and licorice emerge from the 2015 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata. It has the ripe, sexy style of the vintage, medium to full-bodied richness, an elegant, seamless texture, and a great finish. There are plenty of tannins here, yet they're sweet and polished, and this beauty already offers pleasure. Nevertheless, it's going to benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and should have three decades of overall longevity.

“Some of the richest, deepest and most texturally beautiful wines”

Wow. Superb pure fruit aromas of strawberry, fresh orange, raspberry, plum and flowers such as lavender. Full-bodied with chewy and focused tannins that are poised and pure. Like the skin of the grape. This is so primary and beautiful. The transparency is breathtaking. Best Fossati. Drink after 2030 and beyond.

Sweet berry with light tar and hazelnut on the nose. It’s full-bodied with creamy, chewy tannins that are fine-grained and lead you down to a long, energetic finish. It goes on and on. Drink after 2025.

A fine and linear red with dark berries, bark, mushrooms and hints of dried spice. Firm and racy tannins and a flavorful finish. Dried orange peel. Needs four or five years to soften. Best after 2026.
