2019 Chateau Margaux (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaux, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Whether its what James Suckling describes as the "wonderful combination of refinement and power" in Chateau Margaux or the complexity and depth of Chateau Mouton Rothschild that Jeb Dunnuck declares "quintessential Pauillac," these top scoring vintages from two iconic First Growth estates are guaranteed not to disappoint, a terrific opportunity to fill in the cellar with 100 pt. gems or treat yourself to the one of a kind pleasures that only First Growth Bordeaux can deliver in every vintage at best on the market pricing.

A seductive Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend, Chateau Margaux' 82-hectare vineyard boasts some vines over 80 years of age, producing exceptional quality fruit which undergoes rigorous selection with typically only a third or less of production making the cut for the Grand Vin and typically aged for 18 to 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels made at their onsite cooperage. A top scoring selection ranging from the stunning 100 pt. 2009 Margaux just entering its window of drinkability to the alluring 100 pt. 2020 Margaux declared "a Margaux for the ages" by Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson, every vintage shares the Grand Vin's signature refinement and meticulous balance, offering floral aromatics and lush dark fruit with dense silky tannins that promise decades of enjoyment and all "elegant and utterly compelling" in the words of the Wine Advocate's William Kelley. A sumptuous and rich Cabernet Sauvignon blend known for its unique artwork labels that change with each vintage, Chateau Mouton Rothschild shares Margaux's "insane ability to age" according to Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson, its 83 hectare vineyard at Pauillac's highest elevation planted to 81% Cabernet Sauvignon averaging 50 years of age with some vines over 130 years with only 50% of the harvest making the final cut for the Grand Vin and always aged in 100% new French oak typically for 19 to 22 months. Described as a "multi-dimensional First Growth with a very persistent finish" by Vinous critic Neal Martin, the dazzling 100 pt. 2009 Chateau Mouton Rothschild is ready to enjoy after over a decade of pristine cellaring while the stunning 100 pt. 2010 Mouton is "a battleship of a wine" according to the Wine Spectator's James Molesworth and not far behind, every vintage revealing the estate's signature seductive texture, velvety tannins and incredible depth and ranging to the "ethereal" 100 pt 2020 Mouton Rothschild that James Suckling declares "hard to not drink now," highlighting its approachability while acknowledging the potential for decades of evolution.

Representing the upper echelon in the Bordeaux hierarchy, some of these remarkable First Growths boast over a decade of cellaring and others require patient cellaring before pulling the cork, but all are guaranteed to "blow you away any time" over the next several decades in the words of Jeb Dunnuck, delivered in perfect provenance at exceptional value pricing.

100WA 100WI 99V

Is the 2019 Château Margaux the wine of the vintage? A strong case in its favor could certainly be made. Soaring from the glass with aromas of blackberries, raspberries, rose petals, violets, pencil shavings and vine smoke, it's full-bodied, layered and sensual, with a strikingly vibrant core of fruit that's framed by ripe, powdery tannins and bright acids, concluding with a penetrating, mouthwateringly saline finish of almost interminable duration. Complex, elegant and utterly compelling, this is a brilliant Bordeaux that anyone with the requisite disposable income is going to want to own.

100 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Chateau Margaux is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot, with the first wine representing 37% of the harvest. Deep purple-black colored, it needs considerable coaxing to release scents of plum preserves, blueberry compote, and ripe blackcurrants, leading to nuances of violets, cedar chest, pencil shavings, wood smoke, and wet slate with a waft of black truffles. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is simply electric, with a firework display of mineral earth and black fruits and super-fine, firm, tannins, plus incredible tension, finishing with epic length and depth. "I'm surprised by the body," commented winemaker Philippe Bascaules as we tasted together. "During primeurs, the 2019 was full of charm. Now it is more concentrated, more powerful." Indeed.

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Château Margaux possesses off the charts richness to go along with plush contours and mind-blowing balance. All the elements are so wonderfully woven together. It's as if all the Château Margaux signatures are dialed up to eleven, but without losing any of the classic Margaux character. The purity of the red-toned fruit is just breathtaking. The Merlot was picked early, but then rain during harvest delayed the ripening of the Cabernets, which turned out to be a huge advantage. Estate Manager Philippe Bascaules and his team turned out two spectacular wines in 2019. Bascaules describes 2019 as an easy vintage. Flowering was normal and set was good. Yields came in at a healthy 47 hectoliters per hectare, more than 2017 or 2018, the summer heat spikes notwithstanding. Bascaules opted to pick the Merlot early and gave those lots very gentle extractions at low temperatures, whereas the Cabernet Sauvignon vinifications were a much more typical 20-22 days at 28-30 degrees Celsius. In tasting, the 2019s have more tannins than any other vintage, with the exception of 2018, and yet the wines don't show that at all. The bottled wines are every bit as impressive as the barrel samples.

L'Encantada 2017 Lahitte Bas-Armagnac Cask #132 (750ml)
From Armagnac, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

As one of the world's most traditionally oriented spirits categories, Armagnac doesn't have a reputation for dynamism, but that doesn't mean there aren't forward-thinking pioneers who are trying to move the spirit in an exciting direction. Enter Vincent Cornu and his L'Encantada line. Apart from his meticulous sourcing, Vincent's calling card is his unconventional preference for aging in new oak, which yields expressions of outstanding depth and complexity at a comparatively short time in barrel by Armagnac standards. Thus, we get this astounding 2017 single-cask, a clear picture of Vincent's vision at work.

"...an Armagnac like few others I’ve come across." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

Whereas many of Vincent's casks come from now-dormant distilleries and domaines, Cask #132 was distilled by a currently working domaine near Villeneuve-de-Marsan. The 10-hectare property is fully polyculture, so Armagnac is only a small part of what they produce, but as a result, they turn out expertly crafted distillate. Vincent selected #132 for the pure quality of the Ugni Blanc/Colombard base spirit, then his aging regimen did the rest to produce "a striking combination of complex depth and youthful energy," as Andrew describes it. As with all L'Encantada expressions, this one saw absolutely zero adulteration or alteration of any kind, so the profile is a pure reflection of the spirit and its barrel. Andrew explains, "the aromatic depth is outstanding for its age, [and] the palate is likewise full of robust complexity riding a rich, viscous texture." Not only will it thrill those seeking a truly authentic Armagnac experience, but it's also a brilliant crossover for the hardcore bourbon fans who want to expand their horizons – a monumental "powerhouse banger" in every way.

94AK

Vincent Cornu’s passion project is breathing fresh life into the Armagnac category by taking the spirit back to its brash, masculine roots. Where many commonly available examples are adulterated and uninteresting, the L’Encantada line relies on Vincent’s forward-thinking aging regimen in new oak (and sometimes in used bourbon barrels) to turn out powerhouse bangers like this 2017 single cask. It’s a striking combination of complex depth and youthful energy. The nose is explosive with tons of big baking spices, deep spiced orange peel, and compact red fruits. Some initial heat, but it blows off quickly, revealing secondary notes of hot stones, cinnamon cookies, new leather, and sweet cured meats, which all fall in line with this Armagnac’s assertive profile. With aeration comes its luxurious side – toffee and praline, rich pipe tobacco, orange marmalade, chocolate Black Forest cake, sweet spices, and mulled cider. I’ll say it again; the aromatic depth is outstanding for its age. The palate is likewise full of robust complexity riding a rich, viscous texture. It’s exceptionally smooth with just a touch of heat, again defying all expectations for a cask of this age. The fruit mirrors the nose, accented by a medicinal, minty note, while in the background youthful wood tones of fresh cedar dust, nutmeg, raw canela, and dark tobacco play out in succession. A drop of water softens the spices, rounds out the fruit, and draws out the finish in a stunning combination of super-fine, stony minerality and deep cherry liqueur. It’s an Armagnac like few others I’ve come across.

2023 Favia Cabernet Sauvignon Napa (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Favia has been a Napa insider's favorite since its debut in 2003 – after all it combines the lauded talents of viticulturalist Annie Favia and her husband, multiple 100-point winemaker Andy Erickson. That alone speaks volumes to the quality being achieved at this boutique gem of an estate, but when you factor in prime Oakville vineyards next door to Opus One, you're looking at some of the most pedigreed, expertly crafted Cabernets in the Napa collectible scene. As Antonio Galloni writes, "There are a lot of top-tier estates in Napa Valley. In that context, Favia stands out with unique, distinctive wines that brim with character," and that's fully evident in their flagship, double 98-point 2023 Napa Valley Cabernet.

"Strong but elegant and long. Floral, scented and peppery - this has Andy and Annie's fingerprints on it and I love it." - Georgina Hindle, Decanter

The 2023 sees almost equal portions of Coombsville and Oakville fruit, which "represents the best of both appellations—the fresh, savory, mineral edge of the former intertwining with the deep flavor and floral lift of the latter" according to James Suckling's 98-point review. The quality of the fruit sources is undeniable, and Erickson's Meidas touch puts the coda on an absolutely stunning representation of this heralded Napa vintage. This is neither modern nor old-school in style, but instead is a distinctly unique expression that can only come from this dynamic estate and its visionary owners, all for a truly jaw-dropping price that's only available to our private clients.

98JS 98D 97JA

In a new beginning for Favia, an equal blend of Coombsville and Oakville represents the best of both appellations—the fresh, savory, mineral edge of the former intertwining with the deep flavor and floral lift of the latter. Layers of fruit, supported by graphite, dried herbs, flowers and spices, lead to a luscious yet refined palate with finely tuned tannins and a bright line of acidity. A complete, balanced expression of Napa. 75% cabernet sauvignon, 21% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot. Excellent. Drink or hold.

98 points, James Suckling (Dec 2025)

A brand new wine from Annie Favia and Andy Erickson with mainly Oakville fruit from next to Opus One. Gorgeous aromatics on the nose, black chocolate, ripe blackcurrants. Supple and alive, this has energy from the get go, a tangy undercurrent of acidity that really enlivens the senses with cherry, cranberry and plum. Total finesse, lots of flavour but so seamless and integrated with tannins that give structure and hold your attention but don't overwhelm in any way. Strong but elegant and long. Floral, scented and peppery - this has Andy and Annie's fingerprints on it and I love it. Such a juicy, smile-inducing finish too with a salty, blood iron and orange rind tang. Gorgeous.

98 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Feb 2026)

Intense, tangible crushed raspberry and cassis puree, capturing texture and flavour, concentrated and powerful yet with a salted caramel lick and a gentle pacing that steps carefully through the palate. Great stuff. Natural yeasts, low intervention, no filtering or fining. This year it is the first time to be almost entirely Oakville vines, now in co-ownership between the Heeneus family with Annie Favia and Andy Erickson.

"This is an extraordinary vintage that will go down in record books as one of the all-time greats." - Jeb Dunnuck

When Bordeaux's 2022 vintage premiered three years ago, there was some uncertainty as to how the wines would play out from such a hot, dry growing season, one which surely promised wines of massive power, ripeness, and weight. Would it be too much of a good thing?

As it appeared then, and as it has turned out now that the wines are releasing to market, it's an extraordinary campaign among the best of the century. As Dunnuck observes, "Now that the wines are in bottles, it’s clear they have fully lived up to the early hype—and not just at the high end. The 2022s are deep, layered, and concentrated while staying beautifully balanced, light on their feet, and elegant."

Today's selection presents an incredible treasure trove that showcases the vintage's greatest features at every price in the spectrum, leaving no doubt as to how good 2022 Bordeaux really is.

95JD 95JS 94V 94WI 94D 93WA 93WE 93JA

The 2022 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion checks in as 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Cabernet Franc, and 18% Merlot that spent 16 months in barrel. Its deep ruby/purple hue is followed by a beautifully perfumed, medium to full-bodied, elegant 2022 that has red, blue, and some black fruits, a lifted, floral perfume of incense, smoky tobacco, and blood orange, fine, polished tannins, and a great finish. It's beautifully done, and while it's already accessible, it should age beautifully for two decades.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2025)

Such beautiful aromas of blackberries, flowers, nettles and crushed stones follow through to a medium body with firm yet open tannins and a long and crunchy finish. Needs three or four years to come together but very well-constructed. 61% cabernet sauvignon, 21% cabernet franc and 18% merlot. 5% whole-bunch fermentation. Drink after 2029.

95 points, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

The 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is dense, powerful and explosive. Black cherry, plum, new leather, licorice and mocha are amplified in this dramatic, deeply resonant wine. Gorgeous.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2025)

The assemblage here is led by Cabernet Sauvignon, at 61% of the total, with 21% Cabernet Franc and just 18% Merlot, the only cuvée in the appellation to relegate this variety into third place. This is surely relevant when it comes to the aromatics, which are an absolute delight, immediately reminding me of the 2016 vintage, with finely desiccated currant and blackberry wrapped up with Cabernet Franc tobacco and pencil shavings, perfumed oak, slate, sage, white flowers, sandalwood and crushed chalk. The palate is totally correct, deft and light-footed, with a coherent composition, beautifully cut with toast and matchstick notes, but ultimately this is a wine of dark and driven fruit with a wealth of softening components wrapped around the periphery, set in a medium-bodied substance. A really classy Pessac-Léognan, with a long grip of Cabernet tannins;one for the cellar. Tasted twice. The alcohol on the label is 14%.

94 points, Chris Kissack, Wine Independent (Jun 2025)

Highly aromatic and fragrant nose full of dark berry fruits, dried flowers and chocolate. Well sculpted on the palate, tannins give the frame and strength while the bright red, juicy berry fruit adds lift. There's still some tension to this - it drives in a straight line from start to finish with crushed stones, graphite and cola accenting the finish. Still feels a little shy but I love the styling and precision to the elements. A flash of heat and spice on the finish puts the vintage into the picture and suggests waiting a little longer to enjoy this but it's very nice.

94 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Jan 2025)

Confirming my expectations, the 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is one of the best wines ever produced at this estate. Revealing a complex, vibrant bouquet of cassis, lilac, iris, mulberries, spices and menthol complemented by barely noticeable oak, it's medium to full-bodied and layered with a seamless, pure texture and a fleshy core of fruit perfectly framed by velvety tannins and bright acids. The Cabernet Franc contributes a floral finish, while the Cabernet Sauvignon adds a balanced structure. It should age gracefully.

93 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Mar 2025)

An elegant wine with a blueberry and chocolate aroma and touches of toast. With its ripe tannins and succulent black fruits, the wine has a dense structure. Drink from 2028.

93 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Oct 2025)

Lovely aromatics here, dives straight in to a charming, fruit-filled glass, nothing too concentrated in colour or on the nose, still with plenty of personality. Edge of vanilla bean smoke on the nose, there is a sweetness here, raspberry puree, fragrant lemongrass, violet and cherry pit. Enjoyable, fresh acidities on the finish. Dominant Cabernet, with over 80% between Sauvignon and Franc, and a generous for the vintage 40hl/h yield. 15% whole cluster, aged in a mix of amphora, new barrels and one year old barrels. Tasted twice.

2022 Chateau de Vaudieu Amiral G. (750ml)
Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"In addition to the brilliant reds, this estate fashions some of the greatest whites in the appellation." - Jeb Dunnuck

Château de Vaudieu is a long-time favorite among Châteauneuf-du-Pape insiders for their ultra-refined style and their impeccable terroir (neighbors to the cult icon Chateau Rayas, so it's no surprise), but their wines are typically very scarce in the U.S. market. So, when we came across a parcel of their dazzling 2022s, we jumped on it without hesitation.

Vaudieu's impeccable, sandy soils endow the estate's red wines with uncompromising elegance and finesse, while simultaneously imparting serious concentration to the flavor profiles and structures. "Unquestionably up with the top wines of the vintage" according to Dunnuck, the 2022 Val de Dieu, a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 20% Mourvèdre, shines in the early-harvest 2022 vintage, capturing all the vintage's bright, sunny character while remaining incredibly sleek and agile. The 96-point Amiral G and 97-Point L' Avenue are every bit the cult-caliber showstoppers that their reputations imply, the latter also "up with the crème de la crème of the vintage" per Dunnuck and the former a "structured and concentrated ...  great success" in the words of Advocate's Yohan Castaing.

Of course, as Dunnuck notes above, no serious Rhône fan should overlook the Vaudieu whites, benchmarks in every way, starting with the prodigious, 97-point, "Hermitage-like" Clos de Belvedere, a cuvée of 100% Grenache Blanc that's the absolute height of the varietal expression. In the same league of varietal masterpieces, the Vieilles Roussanne is "an enticing white, with simmering, spicy power and dimension" that shows its limestone terroir in perfect clarity along side its pure Roussanne character.

This is a standout range the exemplifies one of the appellation's great benchmark estates, offering collectors a bevy of cellar-worthy stunners that can stand toe-to-toe with the very best that Châteauneuf has to offer.

96JD 94WA 94V

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Amiral G. brings more density and depth. Based on 100% Grenache aging in concrete and demi-muid, its medium ruby hue is followed by a gorgeous perfume of black cherries, wild strawberries, Provençal garrigue, leather, and peppery, spice-like nuances. It's beautifully polished, medium to full-bodied, has a layered, elegant mouthfeel, and ripe, building tannins. It's very much in the sunny, perfumed, complex, and already accessible style of the vintage yet is going to evolve gracefully over the coming 15 years.

96 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2024)

Crafted entirely from Grenache Noir planted on galets roulés, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Amiral G reveals aromas of dark cherries, spices, oak, licorice and lead pencil mingled with garrigue notes. Medium to full-bodied, structured and concentrated, it's denser and fleshier than the classic cuvée with velvety tannins and a rich, powerful finish. Produced at only 3,000 bottles and matured for 18 months in demi-muids or 600-liter barrels, this is a great success.

94 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Sep 2024)

The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Amiral G is delicious. Ripe red fruits, violet and licorice jump out of the glass. Wood smoke and cloves confirm the usage of 100% new oak during élevage. Touching the concentrated palate with a juicy core of ripe fruits framed by firm tannins, the 2022 will take longer to come around compared to the other reds from this address. That said, its superior quality is obvious.

2009 Luis Pato Vinha Barrio (750ml)
Baga from Bairrada, Portugal
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Portuguese wine is so much more than port or even the dry wines of Douro. The country is nearly covered by designated wine regions, and two of the most dynamic and promising for adventurous wine lovers are the centrally located Bairrada and the southern region of Alentejo.

Alentejo is still relatively unknown in wider wine circles, but the region's benchmark producers, such as Susana Esteban and Luis Louro's Monte Branco, are upping their game in a big way, producing some truly noteworthy wines that are among the more intriguing discoveries in the Old World, and they're now getting serious recognition in the U.S. press from the like of Wine Advocate.

Bairrada's relatively gently rolling terrain and coastal climate make it an ideal habitat for the native Baga varietal, the wines of which are notoriously structured and long-lived. The visionary pioneer that has come to define the Bairrada region, Luis Pato has been an avant garde genius pushing the envelope for nearly five decades now, and this latest set of releases shows that he's not content to rest on his laurels, even as his career can by considered an unqualified success many times over.

The Vinhas Velhas Tinto and Branco are two of the most age-worthy wines in their price tier, each with sterling press from Wine Advocate. Of the former, Luis Gutierrez writes, "It's really fine-boned and elegant, with superb balance, depth and complexity ... This is one to buy by the case and enjoy over the next decade... or two!" The WA93+ Branco is likewise a firm, mineral-driven specimen that is all about long-term development. Unique to almost any winery, you can also find perfect-provenance library gems like the 93-point 2009 Vinha Barrio or the 1990 Vinhas Velhas Branco. That's right, it's a current release direct from the winery's cellar. In a recent 95-point review,Wine Advocate's Luis Gutierrez noted, "This is a monumental white close to 35 years of age! And it should still continue for a few more years." Needless to say, you're in for an experience like no other with this one.

When exploring unfamiliar regions like these, it's often a daunting task to decipher which wines are worth the pursuit, so we've done the hard work and curated this list of proven winners to get you off on the right foot in your journey of discovery through Portugal's hidden treasures.

93WA

The 2009 Vinha Barrio is also the current vintage of this vineyard of Baga from chalky-clay soil in a lower zone of the village of Óis do Barro that tends to have more acidity and more elegant tannins. The vines were 10 years of age then. The destemmed grapes fermented in plastic bins without temperature control, and the wine matured in used 650-liter French oak barrels for two years. It has 13.6% alcohol and 5.6 grams of acidity. It has a note of iron, reminiscent of rusty nails, blood and fresh meat, with some earthiness. It has a medium-bodied palate with abundant, slightly dusty fine tannins and a dry finish. 1,650 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2012.

Ric Forman's status as a cult Napa pioneer is well-established, with a critical track record to match the best of them. His 11-acre Howell Mountain property is the source of his expertly crafted, classically styled Cabernets, which he has been turning out since 1983. Perfectly justified in resting on his laurels, Ric instead keeps knocking out the hits, as we clearly see in the stellar, 96-point 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon.

"This stylish, mid-weight Cabernet is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine that is sure to delight Forman fans." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Three distinct parcels make up Forman's vineyard, and each one lends its own particular touch to the finished wine, while Forman's own traditionalist winemaking methods ensure a consistency of style and excellence that few in Napa can match. The wine's "classy, deep, and exceptionally well-tuned" personality is a hallmark Forman calling card, and it portends a long life in the cellar, as is the case with almost every vintage he's ever made. We just sourced a must-see parcel at unbeatable pricing, not only on the regular 750ml format, but also on large-format 1.5L magnums and 3L jeroboams. It's a can't-miss opportunity for serious Napa collectors to load up on a genuine classic from a generational winemaking talent.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is a polished, silky offering. The 2021 is sleek and well-balanced, but despite its bright future, is also very young and in need of time. Building with time in the glass, this is classy, deep and exceptionally well-tuned.

96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Dec 2023)

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is more elegant and restrained in the vintage, as well as slightly more mid-weight than both the 2018 and 2019. Its semi-translucent ruby hue is followed by a beautiful perfume of sweet redcurrants and raspberries intermixed with complex sandalwood, forest floor, and floral notes. Medium-bodied, with a ripe, elegant mouthfeel, well-integrated tannins, and outstanding length, it reminds of a terrific Graves from Bordeaux. It deserves 2-4 years of bottle age and will keep through 2051.

"Terrin is a producer who nurtures the vine, seeking a concentrated and powerful style of the gravelly terroir." - Joaquin Hidalgo, Vinous

Spain's Toro region is one of the country's most dynamic, though it has long existed in the shadows of the more renowned Rioja and Ribera del Duero regions. But winemakers like Dominio del Bendito's Antony Terrin are making serious waves by harnessing the potential of the extremely stony soils, old vines, and trademark powerful Toro style, resulting in serious wines of substance and depth that are built for the cellar.

The 2021s are heavy hitters with serious press from Wine Advocate's Luis Gutiérrez, led by the 95-point, aptly named Titan del Bendito. Made from old, ungrafted plots, some dating to the 19th century, it "showcases the ripe and powerful style of the zone and the winery coupled with good freshness from a very complete and balanced year." Terrin intends this wine to be an ode to the great sophistication and age-worthiness of traditional Toro wines. Stylistically different, the 94-point Las Sabias is "full-bodied but balanced, with ripe fruit and tannins and integrated oak." From 45- to 80-year-old bush vines of Tinto del Toro, the Las Sabias is crafted to showcase a certain poise and freshness that Terrin believes is possible even in this warm-climate region.

Of course, there will always be ample space for Rioja and Ribero in the cellars of Spanish wine collectors, but with entries like these from Dominio del Bendito, the Toro region should be on everyone's radar.

The big (in all aspects) 2019 La Cuesta de las Musas is a powerful expression of a vineyard with two parts, one planted 60 years ago and the other one over 100 years ago, both on sandy and limestone soils. This is carefully crafted, produced in an artisanal way on a small scale, and matured in French oak barrels for 22 months. It's ripe, concentrated and powerful, with 16% alcohol, from slow-ripening grapes that developed fully, so it has great complexity of aromas and flavors, still marked by the élevage in wood. 1,263 bottles were filled in June 2021. It's aging at a glacial pace. It feels very young and has the balance and the stuffing to develop in bottle for a long time.

2023 Domaine Clos de la Chapelle Volnay Santenots du Milieu 1er Cru (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Beaune, Burgundy, France

Of all the new direct-import discoveries to join our portfolio last year, perhaps none reach the heights of quality that Domaine Clos de la Chapelle does. This remarkable domaine under the direction of Pierre Merguey and his American partner Mark O'Connell is still flying under the radar, but they're poised for a big breakout into the elite echelon.

The domaine's vineyard holdings are impressive to say the least, centered around their monopole Volnay Clos de la Chapelle 1er Cru. Top to bottom, the 2023s were incredibly impressive on both occasions we tasted them, at Wine Paris in February and again at the domaine in April. The critical press is equally impressed on a consistent basis, as the domaine has racked up solid accolades from Wine Spectator, Burghound, Inside Burgundy, and View From the Cellar.

The crown jewel is indeed the "utterly stunning" monopole Volnay 1er Cru Clos de la Chapelle, a 96-point showstopper that's "all about finesse and its silky texture, with ... terrific dimension." The double 95-point Volnay 1er Cru Taillepieds is itself a world-class expression of this hallowed site that can stand toe-to-toe with the likes of d'Angerville and Montille at a fraction of their prices. Gilman exclaims, "I have always loved this terroir since my very earliest days drinking Burgundy and it seems pretty clear to me that today, no one makes a better example of Taillepieds than the team at Clos de la Chapelle!" The JG94 Volany Santentots du Milieu is a bona fide gem in its own. "Remarkably sensual," the 2023 is "a simply great bottle of Santenots du Milieu in the making." The sleeper gem, however, is the Beaune Champs Pimot 1er Cru. The lesser-know lieu-dit turned out a fantastic 2023 with a "complex aromatic constellation" and a "a very good core of fruit, tangy acids, fine focus and balance and a long, suavely tannic finish."

It's safe to say we haven't been this excited to introduce a new producer in a long time, and our direct access to the domaine's cellars makes the entire line-up some of the sharpest collectible buys in our Burgundy inventory.

Mark O’Connell’s 2023 Santenots du Milieu is an outstanding young wine, showing absolutely superb aromatic complexity right out of the blocks. The beautiful bouquet wafts from the glass in a mix of red and black cherries, pomegranate, raw cocoa, pigeon, dark soil tones, a refined framing of cedary oak and a topnote of distant bonfire. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, precise and complex, with gorgeous soil signature, ripe, buried tannins, seamless balance and a long, vibrant and extremely promising finish. This is a simply great bottle of Santenots du Milieu in the making. It reminds me a bit of the Comtes Lafon version from the 1985 vintage when it was young!

94 points, John Gilman, View From The Cellar (Apr 2025)

Still in barrel. An even ruby purple of medium depth. The bouquet has a clean red berry fruit, nothing black. Remarkably sensual on the palate, helped by judicious oaking, with a latent concentration of fully ripe but still fresh fruit. The tannins are fully ripened as well, and the finish persistent and pleasing. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted Oct 2024.

2022 Chateau de Vaudieu Val de Dieu (750ml)
Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Val De Dieu is a blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 20% Mourvèdre. Exhibiting a deeper ruby/plum hue (it's one of the darker hued releases) as well as a beautiful nose of ripe blackberries, peppery garrigue, leather, and Provençal spices, it's another medium to full-bodied, broad, fruit-loaded, sexy beauty from this estate that has tons of character.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2024)

A blend of 50% Grenache Noir, 30% Syrah and 20% Mourvèdre and matured for 18 months, with 60% of the wine aged in demi-muids and the remaining 40% in used barrels, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Val de Dieu reveals a deep, complex and fresher bouquet of dark cherries, spices, licorice and lead pencil. Full-bodied, rich and powerful, it's less dense and structured than the other cuvées with a layered, concentrated and deep mid-palate that segues into a long, silky finish. This outstanding wine will evolve gracefully over the next 20 years.

93 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Sep 2024)

The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Val de Dieu comes in a distinctively refreshing early-harvest style, unwinding with fragrant rose petal, strawberry, red cherry and leafy elements. All Grenache, the 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape L'Avenue is a slightly bigger wine, with more black cherry, cassis, sappy garrigue, pepper, and exotic floral notes in its beautifully balanced, layered, elegant profile. Its overall balance is spot on, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a focused, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. I love it today, yet it deserves 2-4 years of bottle age. You can put this up with the crème de la crème of the vintage.

"The 2021 Barolos (and the 2019 Riserva) find Brezza in fine shape. These firm, traditionally made Barolos will delight readers with classically leaning palates." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Our winery-direct relationship with Brezza once again pays huge dividends with the release of the highly anticipated 2021 single crus. By now, this modern benchmark vintage is on everyone's radar, and Brezza has undoubtedly captured the 2021 magic in their entire range, as our tasting last October confirmed. The smash hits of Sarmassa and Cannubi are towering efforts that weave together incredible terroir character and expert winemaking for collectible Barolos of the highest order.

Brezza's Cannubi holding is a 1.4-hectare parcel in the very heart of the cru, so it comes as no surprise that the 2021 "shows all the class and pedigree that has made this site famous" according to Kerin O'Keefe, whose own 97-point score is eclipsed by a 98 points from Wine Enthusiast, which describes it as "a profound testament to Nebbiolo's nobility ... completeness in a glass, a wine that carries both power and finesse with equal measure. The warm micro-climate of Sarmassa endows the wine with deep but balanced personality, with ideal phenolic ripeness being a typical hallmark of the vineyard. This 98-point stunner is "a wine that speaks of place with crystalline clarity," giving telltale signatures of the cru in every drop. Kerin O'Keefe likewise calls it "a gorgeous wine and great expression of this site," and there's no doubt that the magnificent 2021 vintage has turned out a truly special rendition of this long-time B-21 favorite. Finally, Brezza's prized south-facing plots in Sarmassa, Vigna Bricco, produced a marvelous Riserva in the acclaimed 2019 vintage that "brings together all the elements that make these wines so appealing, namely the elegance of Cannubi and then structure of the Sarmassa," according to Antonio Galloni. A concentrated, impressively built Riserva with stunning underlying tension, the 2019 is a hallmark cellar Barolo, made for a long evolution.

As thrilling as this trio is right now, you'll certainly want to stash bottles away and forget them for a while, because the rewards are sure to be as compelling as almost anything you'll find in these epic vintages, once the wines have time to reach their full potential.

From Barolo's most revered vineyard comes a profound testament to Nebbiolo's nobility. The nose reveals sun-warmed strawberries and perfectly baked cherry tart, woven through with dried herbs and subtle earthen tones. The palate unfolds with vibrant rhubarb tang and freshly made mixed berry preserves, while precise acidity courses through like a silver thread. Already showing glimpses of evolution, the wine balances primary fruit with emerging secondary complexity. The palate is pure aristocracy, structured yet seamless, showcasing why Cannubi has been treasured for centuries. Here is completeness in a glass, a wine that carries both power and finesse with equal measure.

2021 Monte Branco Trincadeira (750ml)
Tinta Amarela from Alentejo, Portugal

I tasted two vintages of the varietal Trincadeira from two plots that were planted in 2001, one on schist and the other on limestone, the oldest of which was the 2021 Trincadeira. It was cropped from a cooler year with less ripeness and more freshness. Like the 2022 I tasted next to it, this fermented in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and matured in neutral 300-liter barrels for one year. It has the varietal profile—perfumed, earthy, slightly rustic—and it is fresher, with finer tannins and more contained ripeness. 3,200 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2023.

This red is lush and mouthfilling, exhibiting dark fruit flavors of black cherry, blackberry, black currant, sandalwood, vanilla and toasty oak. There’s a hint of iron underneath, plus a thick base of tannins. Feels balanced, with refreshing acidity, but needs time. Best from 2029 through 2045.

I have always loved this terroir since my very earliest days drinking Burgundy and it seems pretty clear to me that today, no one makes a better example of Taillepieds than the team at Clos de la Chapelle! The wine is stunningly complex aromatically right out of the blocks, offering up scents of sweet dark berries, black plums, raw cocoa, gamebird, a gorgeously complex base of soil tones, a touch of brown spices, woodsmoke, peonies and cedary oak. On the palate the wine is pure, precise, full-bodied and sappy at the core, with great soil signature, ripe, buried tannins, good acids and a very, very long, very refined, complex and seamlessly balanced finish. A brilliant young wine!

Not yet racked. Quite a deep ruby purple. The nose shows density but not detail – that will come more after racking. The fruit on the palate is a mix of strawberry, fresher than in some of the cuvees, raspberry and a first hint of blackberry. Tannins are present but in balance, acidity correct, with fair length.

A blend of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot, and 1% Petit Verdot, the 2016 Chateau Margaux is deep garnet-purple in color. It is a real struggle to shake loose the aromas, this is so shut down at the moment. Eventually, notes of crème de cassis, blackberry pie, and blueberry compote begin to emerge, followed by licorice, dark chocolate, cumin seed, truffles, and iron ore suggestions. Full-bodied and full-on rich and seductive, the palate is absolutely crammed with bright, crunchy black fruit layers, framed by astonishingly ripe, finely grained tannins and amazing tension, finishing with a firework display of minerals, flowers, and exotic spices. Sell your car and get a few cases of this - you won't regret it!

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Dec 2022)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Château Margaux (blended of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Cabernet Franc, 2% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot) sashays out of the glass with glamorous red currants, candied violets, kirsch and crushed blackcurrants scents followed by notions of tilled black soil, forest floor, cast iron pan and cigar box with subtle wafts of lavender and oolong tea. Medium-bodied, mineral laced accents hover over the palate with an ethereal sensation of weightlessness, yet it is super intense with layers of red and black flavors supported by a firm texture of silt-fine tannins, finishing wonderfully fragrant and incredibly long.

99 points, Wine Advocate (Nov 2018)

With a rare 94% Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, this wine is packed both with black-currant flavors and impressive tannins and acidity. It moves Château Margaux into a new dimension with its dense, dry core of tannins that will power the wine into a seriously long-term future. Drink from 2025.

99 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2019)

It’s very friendly and warm on the nose showing flowers, such as roses, and red fruit. But then on the palate, it lets you know how serious it is. Full-bodied, yet reserved, extremely tight and well-formed with super polished tannins that go on for minutes. A solid and typical Margaux with all the personality and beauty in strength. Try after 2027.

99 points, James Suckling (Dec 2019)

Showing consistently and from a bottle purchased locally and drunk over multiple days, the 2016 Château Margaux is a magical wine that tastes like the essence of Margaux. Red and black currants, blueberries, spring flowers, sandalwood, and crushed violet notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a pure, elegant, seamless profile, gorgeous concentration, and a great finish. The level of freshness, purity, and precision paired with concentration and intensity is truly something to behold. It has some accessibility even today, yet it's going to take another decade for this to come close to the early stages of its prime drinking window. It's going to be a 50-75+ year wine.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2023)

The 2016 Château Margaux has an intense bouquet of blackberry, briar, crushed stone and subtle cedar aromas that enrapture the senses; hints of pencil box and sous-bois emerge with time. The harmonious palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and a fine bead of acidity, and a touch of bitterness lends tension on the finish. Impressive – very impressive. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting.

2022 Mazzei Siepi (1.5L)
Sangiovese from Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

An exceptional Super Tuscan combining the power and roundness of Merlot with Sangiovese's structure and acidity, Mazzei's Siepi is a perennial collectible all-star that has seen a fanatical following grow up around the previous several vintages.

Just eight miles from Siena in the historic village of Fonterutoli, 24 generations of the Mazzei family have been owners of the Fonterutoli Castle in Chianti Classico since 1435, boasting a rich legacy of crafting exceptional wines as one of the oldest winemaking families in Italy and the world. Known for being the first winery to plant Merlot in the region over three decades ago, Mazzei's combination of forward vision and steadfast traditionalism have garnered a consistent track record of excellence that few of their contemporaries can match, with the flagship Siepi as the cornerstone.

The four vintages on offer today all showcase the recent trajectory of this magnificent Super Tuscan best-seller, starting with the "classy, elegant and super-polished" 2020 in magnum format. It's no surprise that the epic 2021 vintage produced "certainly one of the best editions of Siepi we've seen so far" per Wine Advocate's Monica Larner, while the double 97-point 2022 is an equally prodigious follow-up to its monumental predecessors in 2019 and 2021, as well as a worthy effort for the wine's 30th anniversary bottling. Finally, the 2023 has already racked up a pair of 97 points scores, with more surely to come. "Classy stuff," it's a lovely representation of the balance of the vintage and my indeed provide more immediate accessibility while you wait for the long-haul vintages to come to maturity.

Whether you're building a Siepi vertical or just building a collection of Tuscany's greatest modern wines, the four vintages on offer today will add some serious depth and gravitas to any cellar.

The aromas of dark berries, violets and perfume are enchanting. The palate is medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins that are polished and so elegant and they run the length of the wine. They are rather endless. Very classy and balanced. A merlot and sangiovese blend. Give this a year or two, but it’s already a joy to drink. Drink or hold.

97 points, James Suckling (Sep 2024)

Deep ruby in colour, this is concentrated compared to many in Tuscany, love the super savoury feel, tongue-scraping architecture, with so much freshly cut herb edging and heavy liqourice root and gunsmoke alongside raspberry and cassis fruit. Brilliant, up there with the very best of the Bordeaux-Tuscan wines, where the grapes and the region truly each play their part in creating the personality of the wine. The vineyards for Siepi are in Castellina in Chianti, harvest September 5 to 17, 70% new oak for ageing, large oak casks for the Sangiovese, then three months in concrete tanks before release. Tasted with the September Releases and again at the estate.

97 points, Jane Anson (Aug 2024)

The Mazzei 2022 Siepi marks this wine's 30th anniversary. I have a special connection to this wine, as I was present when some of the final blending options (with fruit from various parcels within the greater Siepi vineyard) were being decided. My personal preference was for the interpretation that showed the brightest fruit and the most energy. Those qualities are transferred over to this bottle, and I do agree that this celebratory vintage offers an excellent opportunity to tweak the winemaking of this historic blend of Sangiovese and Merlot. This warm vintage offers plenty of primary fruit with bold cherry as the protagonist. Softer tones of blue flower and grilled rosemary appear at the back. However, the oak spice and cinnamon need time to integrate. The results put the 2022 vintage on par with classic years such as 2021 and 2019.

96 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jul 2024)

The 2022 Siepi is a supremely elegant, polished wine. Even so, it has shut down significantly since I tasted it just prior to bottling, likely a reflection of the decision to use a selection of more vibrant Sangioveses for the blend in this vintage. Dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, menthol and licorice build nicely with a bit of coaxing. Over the last few years, the Mazzei family has gradually given their wines a touch more focus and energy, qualities that come through loud and clear here.

96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2025)

Siepi, a 50/50 blend of Merlot and Sangiovese, is one of the rare wines which has increased the percentage of new oak, and today it sits at almost 100%. 2022 was a hot and dry year and it seems to have emphasised the Merlot power more than the Sangiovese finesse: wild forest berries, sous bois and spicy plum lead the way, with a saline touch. Grippy and spicy, round and ripe, it's a bit angular at the moment, with a drying finish, but once that oak has settled down it should show us what it's made of.

1990 Luis Pato Vinhas Velhas Branco (750ml)
Bical from Bairrada, Portugal

I tasted a bottle of the 1990 Branco Vinhas Velhas, yes 1990—that's not a mistake; they are selling it now! The 1991 was not sold in its youth because the wine had sooo much acidity. Much later they sold it and then they discovered they had not sold the 1990 either... It was because the wine was filtered with bentonite and got cloudy, so he didn't sell it! And it remained in the winery until now! It's of course a blend of different old vines, as its name implies. The wine has an amber color and a magnificent and complex nose that mixes notes of honey, pollen, beeswax, marzipan and yellow flowers. It has very limited oxidation for its age; for some reason, it kept more of the proteins that protected it from oxidation. As a reference point, I also tried a bottle of the 1991. The 1990 was a mixture of Bical from limestone soils, Cercial, Maria Gomes and Sercialinho. The 1991 was all from sandy soils, and it is different, more balsamic and with higher acidity. You notice the Cercial in the palate. This is a monumental white close to 35 years of age! And it should still continue for a few more years. It has a moderate 11% alcohol and around five grams of acidity. 6,000 bottles were produced, but they still have 4,000! It has been in bottle since February 1991.

2021 Domaine Grosbois Chinon Montet (750ml)
Cabernet Franc from Chinon, Loire, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

In the broader consumer market, Chinon's best wines can be accounted for in just a handful of names - Joguet, Raffault, and a few others. Today, however, there are several small, family-run domaines that are turning out truly eye-opening results that compete with the long-time standard bearers, and Domaine Grosbois is a prime example.

Brothers Sylvain and Nicolas Grosbois are artisan to the core, running their domaine as a true holistic, polyculture farm, not only as a commercial vineyard. Meticulous viticulture, prime holdings, and top-class winemaking all come together in a reference-point range from top to bottom. The single-vineyard cuvées represent the very best of Chinon. There are no rustic hard edges or vegetal undertones to detract from the jaw-dropping purity of the fruit and the crystal clear expression of the individual terroirs. First up, from a 2-hectare parcel planted on almost pure limestone, the 93-point 2021 Montet is unique among the Grosbois range in that it's the only wine to see any oak. Showcasing "a focused, compact style ... so much pent-up energy ... [and] lovely, persistent length," the Montet is a hallmark of modern, age-worthy Cabernet Franc . Contrasting perfectly with the 2021 Montet, the 2022 Clos du Noyer, from a 1.24-hectare site on sandier soils, "is sleek, intensely concentrated and full of substance." The racy, medium-weight profile conveys a real sense of elegance and complexity already, and it will blossom into a fascinating counterpoint to the Montet over the coming decade.

Simply put, this pair of sleeper hits from Grosbois is can't-miss opportunity for fans of Loire reds to get acquainted with two of the very best examples out there.

93V 92JS

The 2021 Montet is a focused, compact style. When I tasted this, I started singing the Rocky theme tune to the winemaker Nicolas Grosbois, as it has so much pent-up energy, it's like a boxer waiting to go into the ring. This has lovely, persistent length as if it's a singer holding a note without wavering.

2018 Larrivet Haut Brion Rouge (750ml)
Merlot from Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

"Confirming my expectations, the 2022 Larrivet Haut-Brion is one of the best wines ever produced at this estate." - Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate

As part of the general trend of overperforming Pessac estates in the past decade, Larrivet Haut-Brion's stock is steadily rising among the critical press and Bordeaux enthusiasts alike. Thanks to the guiding hand of famed enologist Michel Rolland, the style of the estate's wines has taken on an unprecedented level of class and polish culminating in the spectacular 2022 vintage. Following the overall character of the vintage, this triple 95-point, sub-$50 standout is "a dramatic, deeply resonant wine" with loads of structural stuffing to go the distance in the cellar.

To further emphasize the estate's marvelous recent trajectory, we also have four back-vintage gems on offer that showcase how well Larrivet performs year in and year out. The 2016 is now in its prime drinking window where it will remain for years, while the 95-point 2019 shows "a rich, broad, mouth-filling, spicy, complex and full-bodied style that has loads to love" per Jeb Dunnuck. Keen-eyed collectors also won't sleep on the AG95 rendition from the "off-vintage" of 2017. "Bold, rich and intense, the 2017 exudes tremendous depth and intensity ... Readers should expect a wine of real energy and explosive power," declares Galloni.

All in all, we love featuring Pessac, because the appellation is rife with stupendous collectible values, and while collectors often focus on building verticals of Bordeaux's most hallowed names, this line-up proves that you can get tremendous mileage out of doing the same with under-the-radar gems like Larrivet.

94JD 94WE 93V 92WS 92JS 92D

Showing beautifully, the 2018 Château Larrivet Haut-Brion sports a dense purple hue as well as a ripe, concentrated, sweetly fruited style to go with classic Pessac notes of sweet tobacco, blackcurrants, damp earth, chocolate, and charcoal. It has a solid sense of purity and freshness, plenty of ripe, sunny fruit, and classy, seamless tannins, all pointing toward a long drink window. I think it's a step up over the 2016. Enjoy bottles over the coming 20-25 years.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

Black fruits and tannins combine well in this structured wine. There is a succulent character to the fruit, with acidity and a fresh aftertaste working together. Still young, the wine should be ready from 2026

94 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2021)

The 2018 Larrivet Haut-Brion has developed into a gorgeous wine. There is plenty of the tannin I saw in my barrel tastings, and yet all the elements are so well balanced today. Iron, cedar, dried herbs, licorice, dried flowers and mint add striking savory undertones to this deceptively mid weight Pessac-Léognan. Larrivet Haut-Brion is one of the most distinctive reds of the vintage.

93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

Sleek and fresh, with a pretty beam of red currant and damson plum fruit lined with savory and mineral notes. Subtle tar hint on the finish adds some sneaky length. Nicely done. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2029. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 11,665 cases made.

92 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2021)

Spiced cherry, blackcurrant, dried oyster, black olive and bark on the nose. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, creamy tannins. Chewy and flavorful with a savory, mineral finish. Better from 2023.

92 points, James Suckling (Jan 2021)

Dark spice and slivers of black chocolate make this a gourmet Pessac-Léognan but showing restraint at the same time. Successful, and a reflection of how much work is being done at this property to ensure balanced wines full of personality.

2016 Chateau Leoville Poyferre (1.5L)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Saint-Julien, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Sourced from over 80 hectares of estate vineyards in some of St. Julien's best terroir, these exceptional vintages from Chateau Leoville-Poyferre boast Cabernet's Sauvignon's expressive dark fruit with elegant textured minerality and smooth, silky tannins, all luxurious, balanced Left Bank Bordeaux blends earning 94 plus point ratings and delivered ex-Chateau in perfect provenance at impressive value pricing.

While dating back to 1638, Chateau Leoville-Poyferre's modern renaissance began in 1979, when Didier Cuvelier became the first member of his family to take charge of the estate after studying winemaking under the legendary Emile Peynaud. Implementing an extensive renovation of the vineyards with massive replanting and nearly doubling the estate's holdings, Didier hired renowned consultant Michel Rolland to manage the harvest and refine the final blend, shifting the estate's emphasis to Cabernet Sauvignon and crafting the Grand Vin in a richer, more opulent style by harvesting later to ensure even ripening.

Revisiting it at a retrospective tasting in 2021, James Suckling describes the full-bodied 100 pt. 2009 Leoville-Poyferre as "A red that gives wonderful pleasure now but will continue to do so for decades ahead." Vinous critic Antonio Galloni calls the 95 pt. 2014 Leoville-Poyferre "Gorgeous" and "Super impressive" while Jeb Dunnuck describes the 97 pt. 2015 Leoville-Poyferre as an "unctuous, ripe, pedal-to-the-metal beauty." Dunnuck calls the 98 pt. 2016 Leoville-Poyferre a "brilliantly concentrated, full-bodied, opulent beast of a wine," while the Wine Advocate's Lisa Perrotti-Brown describes it as "simply alive in the mouth, culminating in an epically long finish that will leave your mouth practically tingling. WOW!" James Suckling calls the "serious" 95 pt. 2017 Leoville-Poyferre "one of the best of the appellation" while the Wine Enthusiast's Roger Voss named both the 2017 and 2018 Cellar Selections built for the long haul. Finally, the "legendary" 100 pt. 2018 Leoville-Poyferre is a "a total thrill that tops my scale" according to critic Jeb Dunnuck while Antonio Galloni declares the perfect 2018 "dazzles from start to finish," earning it the #7 spot on the Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2021.

All poised to reward Bordeaux lovers for decades to come, these perfectly cellared, top releases from Second Growth Chateau Leoville-Poyferre delivers powerfully concentrated fruit of exceptional depth and length with rich, ripe tannins, now offered at specially negotiated pricing, some ready to enjoy and all set to evolve in the cellar. After a recent retrospective tasting over the last two decades, Vinous critic Neal Martin summed it up: "Leoville-Poyferre has really taken flight" often "challenging the First Growths" and now offered in perfect condition at a fraction of the price.

98JD 98JA 98D 97WA 97V 97WS 97JS

Tasted on four separate occasions where this wine rated 97+, 98, 98, and 99, the 2016 Château Léoville-Poyferré is a brilliant bottle of wine and is certainly in the same league as the 2000, 2003, 2009, and 2010. Made from 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, aged in 80% new oak, this brilliantly concentrated, full-bodied, opulent beast of a wine offers a heavenly bouquet of crème de cassis, blackcurrants, smoked earth, tobacco leaf, and ample crushed rocks. It’s certainly one of the most flamboyant and opulent wines in the vintage, yet it remains perfectly balanced, with masses of polished tannins, no hard edges, and a fabulous finish. It will be drinkable in 3-4 years yet keep for 3-4 decades.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2019)

An exceptional vintage, and an exceptional wine, punching in quality at the top of the appellation. Beginning to close down at five years old, the fingers of the tannins are closing in, but the bright succulent berry fruits are fully on display underneath and this has slate, cigar box, graphite, the full St Julien toolbox, precise but unyielding, supremely confident. 80% new oak. Harvest October 5 to 20.

98 points, Jane Anson (Jul 2021)

What a wine - such class from the excellent 2016 vintage. A touch of meatiness to the nose with bacon, green peppers and black pepper. So expansive in the mouth while at the same time seeming a little closed or perhaps on its way to closing down. Soft tannins, fine grained giving real presence but they're well integrated. Sophisticated and broad shouldered, this has a soft attack but giving such depth on the mid palate. Bold, powerful and well presented. A classic expression of claret and the St-Julien signature characteristics of minerality, graphite, slate, wet stone and juicy blackcurrant and plum. Closer to the style of 2010, still very tannic with the chalky, mineral texture standing out. Lovely definition and concentration all while being so refined. This will age for decades.

98 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Mar 2022)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Léoville Poyferré hits the ground running with intense cassis, violets, dark chocolate, menthol and fragrant earth notions complemented by nuances of cigar box and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is charged with energetic, super intense black fruit and floral layers, beautifully supported with super firm, ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness. This liquid is simply alive in the mouth, culminating in an epically long finish that will leave your mouth practically tingling. WOW!

97+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Issue # Interim - Nov 2018)

The 2016 Léoville-Poyferré is fabulous. Rich, ample and dramatic in bearing, the 2016 possesses striking intensity and vertical lift. The tannins certainly need at least a few years in bottle to soften, but there is so much to look forward to. Graphite, menthol, lavender and licorice complement the inky blue/purplish fruit beautifully. The bottled wine has a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon and less Merlot than the en primeur sample. I tasted the 2016 three times. It's least favorable showing was at the château. For readers and proprietors who think wines always taste better on site...they don't.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2019)

Richly layered, with a core of well-steeped plum, blackberry and black currant fruit flavors cruising through, flanked by ganache, sweet tobacco and warm tar notes. There's a plush, toasty coating but the wine's energy and nearly unbridled fruit will easily soak that up. A last echo of violet is further evidence of a lovely evolution ahead. Best from 2025 through 2040. 17,083 cases made.

97 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2019)

Wow. The power and depth to this wine is super with a full , fleshy palate. Yet, it’s so tight and integrated with panache and energy. Chewy tannins, yet seamless and melted into the wine. Extremely long and beautiful. Very polished now. This needs at least five to six years to resolve the steely tannins that run through this wine. Take a look from 2024. A blend of 61 per cent cabernet sauvignon, 27 per cent merlot, eight per cent merlot and four per cent cabernet franc.

2022 Caiarossa (750ml)
Cabernet Franc from Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Located a few miles north of coastal Bolgheri in the Cecina River Valley, the Caiarossa estate boasts a hilly terrain covered with the brilliant red or "rossa" gravelly soil for which it is named, enjoying a steady rise in quality since its purchase in 2004 by Dutch businessman Eric Albada Jelgersma, also owner of Château du Tertre and Château Giscours in Margaux. Divided into distinct parcels and located at around 600 meters of altitude, Caiarossa's 31 hectares of vines are spread across three sites on the wooded 70 hectare estate, planted with eight different red varietals including Bordeaux grapes Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, Rhone's Syrah, Grenache (Alicante), and Mourvedre, and Tuscany's native Sangiovese, all farmed biodynamically.

This set of acclaimed recent vintages shows why the estate is a true Tuscan insider's favorite, led by the stunning 96-point 2019, an artful, elegant Super Tuscan blend balancing fresh, layered dark fruit and refined, smooth tannins with powerful structure, showing "impressive depth and textural richness" according to Wine Advocate's Monica Larner. Antonio Galloni of Vinous calls the 2020 "the best wine I have tasted off this property in some time, perhaps ever" on his way to tagging it with an impressive 95 points. Finally, the epic 2021 Tuscany vintage is on full display with Caiarossa's flagship rendition. Larner remarks, "These results are balanced and bright in this gorgeous vintage, and I especially like the wine's freshness that seems to shine from its core" in her 95-point review, one among a bevy of glowing press across the board from every prominent voice in the critical sphere.

97JS 96D 94V 94WE 94JA

A spicy, dark but fancy wine with elegant aromas of cassis, black cherries, eucalyptus and oak bark. Full-bodied. Amazing polished, velvety tannins. The palate is very savory and spicy, with fruit and clove flavors. Balanced finish. From organically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but best from 2026.

97 points, James Suckling (May 2025)

A fabulous Caiarossa worth seeking out. Perfumed and floral - lovely aromatic expression with salty black liquorice, tobacco, tapenade, milk chocolate and dried strawberries. Tangy and zingy, the mouthwatering acidity joins an iron-touch on the tongue that lingers for a long time. Racy and clearly powerful but well constructed with an enjoyable bitter, spice and gorgeous saline finish - a whip of sea breeze accompanying the red fruits and dried herbs and spices. Excellent youthful vibrancy on show with and energy and focus. Tasted twice and equally impressive both times. Biodynamic viticulture and organic winemaking. 3.48pH. Ageing 14 months, 25% new oak and 7% botte which is new. 12% Merlot, 7% Sangiovese, 5% Petit Verdot and 1% Grenache complete the blend.

96 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Jul 2025)

The 2022 Caiarossa is another fine effort from this re-emerging property on the Tuscan Coast. Aromas of espresso, menthol, dried herbs, mocha and incense are immediately alluring. Deep, layered and sumptuous, with exceptional balance, the 2022 is a classic wine from this part of Tuscany. Caiarossa is sourced from vineyards planted mostly on sandstone soils and at lower elevations throughout the estate. It spent 14 months in wood, 90% in French oak and 10% in 25-HL cask. The blend is 32% Cabernet Franc, 26% Syrah, 17% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot,7% Sangiovese, 5% Petit Verdot and 1% Grenache.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2025)

The nose offers black plum, fig, pomegranate, damp soil, and then pepper emerges to take over a savory palate, with tart blackberries and bergamot. Sleek, taut tannins guide a steely finish.

94 points, Danielle Callegari, Wine Enthusiast (Dec 2025)

Underbrush, crushed raspberries, lavender, cedar, mint leaf, sandalwood, warming and inviting, feels very much that you are in Tuscany here with its fragrance and spice, coupled with dark fruits, an excellent vintage of Caiarossa. 2008 Domaine du Tertre Vintage Calvados (750ml)
From Calvados, Lower Normandy, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

We've had a noticeable jump in Calvados interest in the past several months, and today's offer on an elusive 2008 vintage expression should kick that into another gear. Domaine du Tertre isn't on everyone's radar, but they should be. Our own Andrew Kitz declares, "This Calvados micro-domaine should be next up on the list of anyone who’s serious about top-tier artisanal spirits of any kind." They only make a single vintage bottling each year, and it's released at either 15 or 20 years old, depending on how it develops in elevage. We'll cut right to the chase. This current-release 2008 is:

"...a singular spirit of mind-blowing character." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

Planted to approximately 600 trees of 40 different varietals, Domaine du Tertre's artisan approach begins in the orchard. The domaine's main product is cider, which forms the base for their utterly stellar vintage Calvados. Distilled once a year in September, the additive-free new make is left to age at a full 70% ABV in oak sourced from Perche and Cognac, where a natural reduction of alcohol occurs at approximately 3% per year. The astounding finished product is bottled at a natural cask strength with no proofing down. From a "super complex" aromatic profile to an "unbelievably graceful palate," from a "foundation of beautiful minerality" to a "lifted, seemingly endless finish," this is a truly spectacular expression of Calvados that every serious spirits fan should taste at least once. There's no other way to put it.

This Calvados micro-domaine should be next up on the list of anyone who’s serious about top-tier artisanal spirits of any kind. They only produce one Calvados per vintage, and they release it based readiness at either 15 years old or 20 years old, so we’re talking about very small, limited quantities here, especially when we don’t know when the next vintage will be ready. Crated from very old, low-yielding trees of multiple apple varietals, this a singular spirit of mind-blowing character. Brief heat on the nose gives way to deep, overripe apples, spiced pecans, apple butter, new leather, pear blossom, and pure vanilla pod. It’s hard to overstate how super complex this aromatic profile is. The fruit is opulent to the perfect degree, and the initial notes segue into gorgeous exotic spices, pomegranate, maraschino cherry, balsam wood, red plum, and jellyroll filling. The unbelievably graceful palate is itself very complex, with a foundation of beautiful minerality along with very ripe tree fruit, cardamom, and high-toned floral blossoms. It shows excellent texture and medium weight with secondary nuances of balsam wood and assertive spices such as cinnamon and clove, all leading to touches of dark berry fruit and menthol on the lifted, seemingly endless finish. I don’t often pine for more of anything I try, but I was actually quite sad when I finished this sample.

The ImPex Collection Victor Ramos Tobala Capon Agave Spirit (750ml)

"The second entry in a stunning pair of mezcals from. Maestro Victor Ramos, one of the game’s legit all-stars." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

Mezcal is hotter than ever, and with the breadth of stylistic diversity and better-than-ever quality standards that now define the category, there's arguably no more fascinating or thrilling ground for exploration on the spirits scene right now. We've seen some real stunners come through our doors in the past year, but few if any have exhibited the kind of singular sophistication we found in this single-varietal agave potatorum from maestro mezcalero Victor Ramos.

Based in Miahuatlán village in Oaxaca, Tío Victor is best known for and most often associated with the Mezcaloteca and Mal Bien labels, but this single-batch expression selected and bottled by ImpEx is truly the master at his very best. Remarkably defined and pure for a single distillation, it's a true thing of beauty. Produced on a copper alembic still and aged in glass for one year, the Tobala Capon is "a masterpiece of complexity, drive, and intensity, all judged to a perfect degree by the maestro," as noted by B-21 spirits buyer Andrew Kitz.

While not exactly rare on the mezcal scene, the a. potatorum varietal is nonetheless highly sought-after for its singular profile, especially when cultivated and harvested by the capon method, which produces something in a class all its own. We snagged the last remaining stock of this limited-edition knockout, so don't hesitate, unless you don't mind missing out on one of the most compelling agave expressions you're likely to find.

95AK

The second entry in a stunning pair of mezcals from Maestro Victor Ramos, one of the game’s legit all-stars. This single-varietal, single-batch a. potatorum is a masterpiece of complexity, drive, and intensity, all judged to a perfect degree by the maestro. The nose is all knockout complexity, leading with a burst of petrol and fine smoke before lime zest, tart green apple, faint gunpowder, tomato leaf, and wet river rocks. The definition is incredible as the aromatics turn to geranium, cool red raspberry, fresh ginger, juniper berries, and cumin seed. Simply head-spinning. The palate is equal parts intensity and grace, with mint, lemon zest, green pear, and prickly pear all upfront. The texture is deep yet effortless and refined, and the profile really expands with air. Flavors of cardamom, crushed white flowers, juniper berry, and faint volcanic ash carry to a medium-long, almost weightless finish, with a pop of sweet agave and sesame seed to pull it all together at the end. This is a reference-point expression, without a doubt.

2017 Larrivet Haut Brion Rouge (750ml)

95V

The 2017 Larrivet Haut-Brion is a seriously impressive wine. Bold, rich and intense, the 2017 exudes tremendous depth and intensity. Following its bottling, the 2017 is very tannic and closed, but the depth and persistence it showed from bottle are still very much in evidence. The 2017 clearly needs time in bottle to be at its best, but it is still quite good. Readers should expect a wine of real energy and explosive power. Tasted two times.

2015 Chateau Leoville Poyferre (375ml)

97JD 97V 96WE 96JS 96JA 96WA 95WS

The 2015 Leoville Poyferre is cut from the same cloth as the 2016, yet is more sexy, rounded and opulent. Notes of cassis, licorice, crushed rocks, lead pencil shavings and graphite all emerge from this unctuous, ripe, pedal-to-the-metal beauty that's absolutely loaded with fruit and texture. Reminding me of the 2003, yet only fresher, don't miss this beauty. It should be drinkable in 3-4 years and last for 3-4 decades. The blend of the 2015 is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc.

97 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2017)

The 2015 Léoville-Poyferré is spectacular. Inky, dense and explosive, the 2015 possesses off the chart richness, with soft contours, no hard edges and exceptional balance. All the elements are simply fused together. inky blue/purplish fruit, chocolate, new leather, blueberry jam, exotic spice and violet notes are all beautifully delineated throughout. Fresh, vibrant and totally sexy, Léoville-Poyferré is one of the wines of the vintage. Don't miss it! Tasted two times.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2018)

Following the style that this estate has now adopted, this is an ultrarich, concentrated wine. However its acidity and bright black-currant fruits contrast well with this solid base. Drink this impressive wine from 2026.

96 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Feb 2018)

A rich and intense red with blackberries, tar and spices. Black tea and blueberries. Full-bodied, very layered and multi-dimensional. Very long and flavorful. Such great texture. A dynamic and superb red. Drink in 2023.

96 points, James Suckling (Feb 2018)

Right off the first nose, this is young, generous, powerful yet subtle, nuanced, full of grace and power. Raspberry and blackberry fruits feel open and generous right now, so you could take advantage of this window and drink it over the next year or so with a carafe, but those tannins are menacing and hinting that pretty soon the fist will close around the fruit. Smoked cedar fills out the mid palate. Excellent. Harvest September 24 to October 10. 80% new oak.

96 points, Jane Anson (Sep 2021)

The 2015 Leoville Poyferre is medium to deep garnet colored. It needs a fair bit of coaxing to unlock notes of blueberry pie, kirsch, and blackcurrant pastilles, plus touches of garrigue, potpourri, and dusty soil. The medium-bodied palate is very tightly wound and youthful still, delivering a frame of firm, ripe tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and earthy.

96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)

Dark plum cake, blueberry reduction and açaí berry fruit tilts this to the exotic side of the ledger, with warm ganache, melted black licorice and tar notes providing the spine through the lush finish. Displays some serious latent grip, so there's no rush despite the showy fruit. Best from 2022 through 2040. 18,439 cases made.

2022 Chateau Meyney (375ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Saint-Estephe, Bordeaux, France

We've all seen the general rise in quality in Bordeaux over the past two decades, and now even the Cru Bourgeois (or Cru Classé) estates are gaining some serious recognition while still remaining top-tier QPR buys that you can stash away in the cellar. At the head of that pack is St-Éstephe's Château Meyney, always a savvy choice to overdeliver, and we've got a must-see mini-vertical on offer today,

Since 2013 under the consulting direction of Château Angélus' Hubert de Bouard, Meyney is on a real tear, with mounting critical accolades that are far outpacing the estate's cru bourgeois classification. Each of the vintages below is a gem, but the undisputed highlights are the benchmark 2020 and 2022. "The 2020 Meyney turned out beautifully. Fresh, vibrant and full of character, the 2020 impresses with its energy and delineation," notes Antonio Galloni. The warm, dry 2022 vintage produced a profound, long-haul thoroughbred that offers extreme bang for your collectible buck, with widespread acclaim for all corners of the professional press. "A serious overachiever" according to Galloni, "this appears to be the best Meyney produced for quite some time, and it's well worth seeking out," notes Wine Advocate's William Kelley.

In short, these acclaimed gems are some of the smartest bets for your cellar that you'll find, with tons of upside potential and case-buy pricing.

This always represents good value. Spicy, stony and floral at the same time with deep blue fruit and hints of pine, incense and cloves. Veins of tannins show a mineral verve. This is firm, powerful and long. A bit too young at this stage but already showing potential. A very good vintage. Drink after 2028.

95 points, Zekun Shuai, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

While I wasn't able to taste the 2022 Château Meyney En Primeur, it's a beauty now from bottle. Needing air to show at its best, this deep purple-hued Saint-Estèphe has a ripe, powerful nose of darker currants, chocolate, smoked tobacco, and cedar pencils. This carries to a full-bodied Meyney that has a broad, layered mouthfeel, ripe, velvety tannins, beautiful overall balance, and a great finish. It's accessible even today with a decant, but it's going to take a decade to hit maturity and will age gracefully on its concentration and depth.

94+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2025)

The 2022 Meyney has turned out very well, offering up aromas of crème de cassis, bay leaf and pencil shavings, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy palate that's rich and seamless, exhibiting an integration of tannin that can't always be taken for granted at this address. In fact, this appears to be the best Meyney produced for quite some time, and it's well worth seeking out.

93 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Mar 2025)

The 2022 Meyney is a serious overachiever. Dark, virile and imposing, the 2022 packs a serious punch. Black fruit, cedar, leather, licorice, dried herbs and espresso are beautifully amplified. Swaths of tannin wrap it all together in style. Impressive.

93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2025)

Well balanced ripe red fruits, creamy without being overly exuberant, tomato leaf and rosebud interwoven with damson and red cherry fruits, good stuff, one to share.

93 points, Jane Anson (Mar 2025)

The 2022 from Meyney is a blend of 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 13% Petit Verdot, and aromatically it is a dream, with dark and focused fruits to the fore, blackberry and currant wrapped up in a powdery ribbon and fine oak and mineral freshness. This feels very coherent, and the palate follows the lead of the nose, with seductive layers of black fruits, with little toasted and saline elements, over a frame of beautifully melded tannins which give the palate a dark, coherent, cohesive sense of promise. A great vintage for Meyney, easily a challenger for the cru classé wines of the appellation in this vintage. A safe bet for the cellar, this. The alcohol on the label is 14%.

93 points, Chris Kissack, Wine Independent (Jun 2025)

Ripe brambleberry fruit aromas on the nose. Rich and filling on the palate, this has a nice texture of crushed blue fruit pulp, fleshy and chewy with cool cola and liquorice accents. The oak feels a little prominent in the softly drying tannins and cedar spice on the finish which gives this a subtle sense of opulence. Full bodied and full of flavour.

2020 Rauzan-Segla (1.5L)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaux, Bordeaux, France

Described by Jeb Dunnuck as an estate "firing on all cylinders," there's no doubt that Super Second Chateau Rauzan-Segla ranks at the top of the Margaux appellation, these high scoring Left Bank blends from outstanding recent vintages offering First Growth depth and cellar worthy complexity at a fraction of the price.

Located a short walk from the village of Margaux, Chateau Rauzan-Segla has been owned by the Wertheimer family of the fashion house Chanel since 1984, the estate undergoing a "no expense spared" restoration and revitalization that has fueled its steady rise in quality over the past two decades. Crafted by former Krug and Cheval des Andes winemaker Nicolas Audebert, the Grand Vin was sourced from the estate's 70 hectares of organically farmed vineyards throughout the appellation with some parcels close to First Growth Chateau Margaux and aged in mostly new French oak for 18 months.

Living up to the Chateau's rising star reputation as "an estate that can do no wrong" according to Jeb Dunnuck, these lush Chateau Rauzan-Segla blends boast refined, polished tannins that promise longevity, this offer a perfect opportunity for Bordeaux fans to stock the cellar with top scoring values rivalling its First Growth peers at a best on the market price.

98WA 98JD 98D 97V 97JS 97WI 96WE 96JA

The 2020 Rauzan-Ségla is showing brilliantly in bottle. Wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis and minty blackberries mingled with violets and licorice, it's medium to full-bodied, suave and seamless, with a deep core of vibrant fruit, beautifully refined tannins and a harmonious, integrated profile that exudes elegance. A wine of immense character and refinement, it's the best vintage from this estate in recent times.

98 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2023)

The 2020 Château Rauzan-Ségla is pure Margaux brilliance, and this beautifully elegant wine embodies the best of the vintage. Revealing a deep ruby/purple hue as well as a great bouquet of blackcurrants, black cherries, lead pencil, sandalwood, smoked tobacco, and hints of incense, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a layered, seamless mouthfeel, integrated acidity, and a great finish. It offers pleasure today (although it closes down with extended air) but deserves 5-7 years of bottle age and will evolve for 30 years or more. This is clearly in the same league as the 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2019. Tasted on multiple occasions with consistent results.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

Juicy and lively fragrance on the nose – so perfumed and alluring. Delicate and pure on the palate, crystalline yet with such intensity. A rush of creamy tangy strawberries, herbal-edged raspberries and plum fruit lined with salty minerality gives the nuance and detail. It’s lightly framed with well integrated tannins that are fine and firm, tense just giving some tightness on the mid-palate, a sense of compactness, but then it opens again towards the finish. Cool and ethereal, this exudes charm and confidence. Extremely well made and totally seductive. I love the juiciness and sense of joyfulness, but it’s also beguiling as it deepens and grows in layers of chalk, slate, bramble fruits, perfume and florality. Another excellent wine from Rauzan with delicacy, detall and drinkability. Stunning.

98 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Jan 2023)

The 2020 Rauzan-Ségla is a huge, explosive wine. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice, smoke and incense are some of the many notes that infuse the 2020 with tremendous richness. With élevage, the 2020 has grown into a huge, brooding wine endowed with notable presence. There's great purity and class here. The 2020 is a powerful, brooding Rauzan-Ségla for readers who can be patient. Very patient. Tasted two times.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2023)

A very polished red with blackberry, black olive, walnut, and crushed stone aromas that follow through to a medium to full body with polished, velvety tannins that go on for minutes. Surprisingly open and so attractive. Wonderful length to this. Needs four to five years to open. Best after 2026.

97 points, James Suckling (Nov 2023)

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, and 1% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Rauzan-Segla has a deep garnet-purple color. It charges out of the gate with energetic notes of fresh blackberries, cassis, and black cherries, leading to hints of clove oil, violets, and underbrush. The medium-bodied palate has a plush, fine-grained texture and seamless freshness supporting the classically styled flavors, finishing long and perfumed.

97 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Mar 2024)

This wine has a fine structure, with dense tannins from the Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. It is a full wine, the spicy character mingling with black currant flavors. The wine has an excellent future. Drink from 2027.

2021 Schoffit Riesling Sommerberg Grand Cru (750ml)
Riesling from Alsace, France

"The wines are compelling in a rather quiet way, understated but so convincing." - Anne Krebiehl, Vinous

"They are of a consistently high quality and, in my opinion, still far too rarely on the radar of importers, retailers and sommeliers." - Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate

Today is a special re-load/new release

Domaine Schoffit's vineyard stable is loaded with prime sites, but the unquestioned jewel in the crown is the Clos St-Théobald in the Rangen de Thann Grand Cru, inarguably the finest vineyard in Alsace. At 6.5 hectares, the Clos is now a monopole since Bernard Schoffit completed his ambitious reclamation project to unite the entire site under his domaine. The super-steep slopes and volcanic soitls produce one of the world's most distinctive Rieslings, and the 97-point 2022 ranks among the greatest vintages ever made of this wine. Not to be overlooked, the 2022 Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos St-Theobald Grand Cru is another singular standout, this from granitic soils that shine in the wine's stunning combination of density and mineral energy. Finally, the newly released, 94-point 2023 Harth Gewürztraminer showcases Schoffit's great sites around Colmar with fantastic varietal precision, resulting in "a beautifully textured and structured Gewurztraminer with delicate acidity and serious structure."

It bears repeating – these wines belong on the short list of Alsace's finest names along side the Weinbachs, Trimbachs, and Zind-Humbrechts, so if you're a serious Alsace fan or collector of the world's best Rieslings, make room in the cellar. You'll be so glad you did.

The 2021 Riesling Grand Cru Sommerberg is precise, bright, fresh, pure and clear on the elegant and flinty nose. On the palate, this is a more generous and textured Riesling than expected from the nose, but it is still very elegant and saline, with generous ripe fruit, firm tannins and strict mineral tension. Still in a valley of its development, this is a precisely defined, dense and complex Sommerberg with 13.9% alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in Colmar, November 2024.

Featured in a range of formats and vintages cellared in perfect conditions, Sauternes fans and those looking to explore them won't need an excuse or special occasion to enjoy this thrilling, top scoring selection from Chateau Suduiraut, boasting fresh, opulent honeyed fruit perfectly balanced by savory acidity, offering a not to be missed opportunity for both collectors and newbies to stock up on at bargain pricing and enjoy over the next decades.

Set among exquisite gardens designed by the creator of the Sun King's grounds at the Palace of Versailles, the majestic two-story turret-flanked Chateau Suduiraut is one of Bordeaux's most beautiful estates, located just to the north of Chateau d'Yquem with 92 hectares of sloping organically farmed vineyards planted with mostly Semillon vines averaging 30 years of age. After harvesting the botrytized grapes over multiple passes with strict selection employed in the vineyard, longtime technical director Pierre Montegut vinified the Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes in French oak, blending mostly Semillon with small amounts of Sauvignon Blanc, then aged it on the lees in 50% new French oak barrels for 18-24 months, yielding its signature perfumed aromas with rich and decadent spiced fruit, balanced with energetic acidity and epic length. Describing it as "a mood altering wine," the 95 pt. 2004 Suduiraut boasts "a range of honeyed flavors that never seems to stop" according to Wine and Spirits, while the Wine Advocate's Robert Parker Jr. declares the 95 pt. 2006 Suduiraut "unctuously textured, with superb, full-bodied richness, good underlying acidity, and a stunning finish." 100V 98WA

The 2023 Suduiraut is a model of modern Sauternes. Orange peel, burnt sugar, crème-brûlée, tangerine peel, and wild flowers inform a Sauternes of total finesse and silkiness. Yields were a measly 12 hectoliters per hectare. The 150 grams of residual sugar are not especially evident. Everything about the 2023 is perfectly judged. It can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring or cellared for decades. The 2023 is a timeless wine that is among the most notable successes of the year.

100 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2026)

With 150 grams per liter of residual sugar, the 2023 Suduiraut is exquisite, unfurling from the glass with aromas of pineapple, exotic fruits, spices, honey, ripe orchard fruits and a touch of menthol. Medium- to full-bodied, concentrated and deep, it is layered and finely textured, built around a powerful yet perfectly controlled core of fruit, concluding with a long, fresh and perfumed finish. Entirely crafted from Sémillon, it registers a pH of 3.8.
