Produced from the legendary Mazzei family's centuries old Chianti Classico estate, the suave and finessed 97pt 2019 Castello di Fonterutoli Concerto seamlessly blends fresh, vibrant Sangiovese fruit with Cabernet Sauvignon's depth and persistence, declared simply "great stuff" by critic Jane Anson and a striking value under $50 and recently posted, a confirming 95+WA by Monica Larner.

Just eight miles from Siena in the hills of a quieter, more traditional Chianti Classico, the historic village of Fonterutoli has been home to an astounding twenty-six generations of the Mazzei family since 1435. Produced in only the best vintages under the guidance of renowned consultant Carol Ferrini for nearly three decades, Concerto is a blend of mostly Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon aged "Bordeaux-style" in barrique, initially crafted as an "outright experiment" in 1981 by the winemaking team at Mazzei who christened it "Concerto" to embody the harmonious expression of the two varietals. Sourced from separate vineyards at altitudes of around 350 meters, the grapes for the 2019 Concerto were grown in a rocky mix of decomposed limestone and sandstone and were handpicked at optimal ripeness during the extended 2019 harvest. After maturing it for 18 months in small 70% new French oak barrels, winemaker Luca Biffi then aged the 2019 Concerto three months longer in concrete tanks plus another 6 months in bottle, producing an elegant Sangiovese-driven blend balancing powerful, fine tannins that critic Antonio Galloni of Vinous has described simply as "just gorgeous."

From one of the oldest wineries in the world, the powerful 97pt 2019 Castello di Fonterutoli Concerto balances ripe juicy red fruit with dark, savory notes and nuances of earth and spice, an intensely plush and long-lived Super Tuscan blend declared "already elegant and beautiful" by critic James Suckling, poised to deliver years of enjoyment in original wooden cases of six.

This is savoury, dry in the best possible way, with a ton of red fruits, dried roses and herbs, and waves of fragrance. It’s a successful blend where the Sangiovese is dominant, conferring the wine with its warm personality but the Cabernet Sauvignon adds a touch of austerity to the tannins and a sense of quiet confidence. Turmeric and olive tapenade as it opens, alongside raspberry, red cherry and smoky oak, the whole thing both extremely delicate and intensely fragrant. Can drink now with a short carafe - there are tannins here but they are well defined and finely layered - but it will also age. Small amounts of the 2018 were released last winter, but this September sees the first proper release through the Place de Bordeaux. Ageing 18 months in small French oak barrels, 70% new, plus four months in concrete tanks afterwards. One to look out for - great stuff from the Mazzei family, that has been making wine in Tuscany since the 15th century.

Such a fragrant and appealing burst of aromas here with milk chocolate, blackcurrants, dried herbs and flowers. A blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, this has a core of cherries and raspberries alongside savoury olive and oak elements with round, just-there tannins that give support to the fresh and lively fruit. Great power, depth and concentration. The wine is aged for 18 months in small French 225l oak barrels, 70% new, before moving to concrete tanks for four months.

Made with mostly Sangiovese supplemented by the structural heft and texture of Cabernet Sauvignon (that makes up roughly 20% of the blend), this is a profound and important red wine from Tuscany. The Mazzei 2019 Concerto di Fonterutoli is your proverbial steak buddy, or all-round meat wine, with abundant black fruit, spice, tannins and acidity to cut through the fat and the gristle. By a hair, I prefer the depth and intensity of the 2019 vintage compared to the 2018 vintage that I tasted at this same sitting. This wine is slightly more etched and angular, making it a good bet for extra bottle aging.

This is very fine grained, with polished, silky tannins that provide wonderful texture and length to the wine. Plenty of cherry, blackberry, chocolate and mahogany flavors that follow through to the palate. Complex and refined. Drink after 2024, but already very elegant and beautiful.
