The 2019 Morillon Ried Eckberg –1STK– is from an east-facing, 2.5-hectare vineyard in Gamlitz that climbs steeply from 400 to 450 meters above sea level. Picked on October 7, whole-bunch pressed as gentle as a Crémant and vinified in large oak casks for eight months, this is a full-bodied yet pure, tight, enormously vital and tensioned Morillon (a.k.a. Chardonnay) that reveals drive and grip as well as youth. This is an impressive, probably lower-sulfur wine with great purity and a coolish, Styrian character. The finish is tight and grippy as well as salty and releases level grapefruit and lime notes at this early stage. Very unique in style and class. 12.5% alcohol. Tasted in August 2020.
