2021 Rippon Rippon Pinot Noir Mature Vines (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Central Otago, New Zealand
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Central Otago's Rippon is unequivocally a "grand cru" New Zealand estate by any measure, even aesthetic, as it's arguably the most beautiful wine estate in the world, situated on the shores of the iconic Lake Wanaka with the South Island's Alps as a jaw-dropping backdrop.A family run estate since their founding, the Rippon Pinot Noirs represente the very top echelon of the country's offerings in that category and set the bar vintage after vintage for the cream of Central Otago's crop.

Our first allocation of the newly released 2021s has just landed, and it's safe to say that these are once again world-class offerings with stratospheric critical accolades that can compete with virtually any Pinot Noir in the world, from Burgundy, Sonoma, or anywhere else. Leading off, the flagship 2021 Mature Vines boasts 97 points from James Suckling, while it's a "gorgeous" offering that "expounds mineral freshness and detail in spades" according to Wine Advocate's Erin Larkin. Taking the estate profile to another level of nuance and detail, the single-block bottlings, always highly acclaimed and highly limited, are collectible stunners of the first order. The WA98 Tinker's Field "is a wine of impact and tremendous grace," while the JS97 Emma's Block is "mineral, detailed, and quietly spoken," each wine offering a distinct side of the Rippon estate's personality.

For any collector of reference-point, singular Pinot Noirs, Rippon belongs on your short list. If you haven't yet discovered them, do yourself a favor and make some room in the cellar next to your other trophy bottlings, as these mesmerizing gems will cruise in dynamic fashion with the best of the best.

97JS 94WA

Lovely ripe berries and strawberries with some juicy fruit and forest flower aromas that follow through to a full body with layers of fruit and fine tannins that spread across the palate. Oyster shell and granite-like undertones. Warm fruit character yet cool in the mouth. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink after 2025, but already beautiful.

97 points, James Suckling (Oct 2023)

The 2021 Rippon Mature Vine Pinot Noir is a representation of the flavor of the estate. The wine spends two winters in barrel and two in bottle prior to release, and as usual, the wine here today expounds mineral freshness and detail in spades. On the palate, the tannins set in in a manner akin to wet chalk. They are silty and fine and tend to settle on the palate and linger long through the finish. I love this wine: the detail and freshness of it and the flavors of pomegranate, crushed shells, raspberry seed and white tea. Yields were very low, and it was a difficult year in terms of the logistical challenges thanks to COVID-19. "I kept it simple this year; there was so much going on in our lives at that time," says Nick Mills. Vines were planted from 1982 to 2000, mostly unirrigated (aside from new vines) and on own roots, and no adjustments were made to the must. This is gorgeous. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

2022 Passing Time Red Blend (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Columbia, Washington State
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"Passing Time is a serious contender in the fine wine scene of Washington State ... I’ll certainly keep my eye on how this project progresses." - Eric Guido, Vinous

Today's offer is a special one for our Florida family. While you may or may not have heard of Passing Time, a thrilling new player in boutique Washington Cabernet that's making huge waves in the critical press, you no doubt know the founder, legendary Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino. Working with acclaimed winemaker Chris Peterson from several of the state's most prized vineyards (including Champoux, Klipsun, and Wallula), this project is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with. Having recently tasted the entire range of 2022s ourselves, we can wholeheartedly stand behind the raft of monster scores and impressive accolades that follow these wines.

Starting off, the JD94 Red Blend is "an impressive wine at any price point but offers outstanding value" at our sub-$60 price. However, it's the appellation-specific bottlings that truly steal the show, each one a quintessential representation of its origins. The "impeccably structured and detailed" 2022 Red Mountain Cabernet is arguably the cream of the crop (but we're really just splitting hairs, as they're all so compelling). It positively "vibrates with energetic red and black fruit flavors, supported by fine-grained tannins and a lively line, finishing long and shimmery," according to Lisa Perrotti-Brown. If you after something that reminds you "a touch of Château Montrose in Saint-Estèphe," don't miss the Horse Heaven Hills Cab. This double 97-point Left Bank lookalike is perfectly poised to cruise for decades in the cellar. Finally, the double 97-point Walla Walla Cabernet draws from two iconic sites, Seven Hills and Pepper Bridge, to deliver "a rock-solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness to match the vivacious, muscular black fruit, finishing long and fragrant."

It's rare to find a range in which each wine showcases such stunning class and sophistication in its own particular way, but Passing Time is well on the way to distinguishing itself as one of the most exciting new names in collectible Cabernet, and you'll be thrilled to have any and all of these standout performers in your cellar for decades to come, especially at our unbeatable market-best pricing.

Made from components from the single-appellation Cabernets, with small additions of Klipsun and Champoux Merlot and Champoux Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Red Wine is an impressive wine at any price point but offers outstanding value here. Aged in French oak, 57% new, it’s a rich, textured, full-bodied blend steeped in ripe plum and blackberry, baking spice, and dried herb, with a finishing note of cigar and cacao nib. The tannins are well-integrated and add plenty of finesse. Drink 2025-2035.

94 points, Virginie Boone, Jeb Dunnuck (Jul 2025)

Deep garnet-purple wine, the 2022 Red Wine charges out with gregarious notes of red currant jelly, juicy plums, and cassis, leading to hints of menthol, violets, and crushed rocks. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers vibrant red and black berry layers with fine-grained tannins and fantastic tension, finishing long and minerally. The blend is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc. This is outstanding value at $65!

94 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Mar 2025)

The 2022 Columbia Valley Red Wine comes to life in the glass with an inviting collage of black currants and pencil lead, gravel dust and rubbed sage. This is pure seduction on the palate: soothingly round and supple textures host crisp red and black fruits, complemented by hints of inner sage. This leaves a web of fine tannins and blackberry concentration amidst a remarkably fresh finish.

93 points, Eric Guido, Vinous (Dec 2024)

Handsomely structured and richly detailed, this red offers black currant, licorice and black olive flavors that gather tension toward medium-grained tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2032. 545 cases made.

93 points, Tim Fish, Wine Spectator (Mar 2025)

Ripe blackberries open the aromatic show, with violets and seared steak serving as supporting actors. The densely textured wine features flavors of black cherries, anise and balsa wood that ache to be matched with something meaty from the grill. This Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend is a tannic beast that will require patience or decanting.

93 points, Michael Alberty, Wine Enthusiast (Sep 2025)

Aromatic and expressive, with crushed black raspberries, dried currants, walnuts and a hint of dried thyme. Medium- to full-bodied, tense and vibrant, with juicy acidity and a lightly chalky finish that lingers with spice and earthy nuances. Drink or hold.

93 points, James Suckling (Mar 2025)

The 2022 Red Wine Columbia Valley is a blend of 80% Cabernet, 15% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, matured for 20 months in 60% new French oak. Initial aromas of vanilla and allspice give way to Luxardo cherries, blueberry, licorice and lilac. The full-bodied palate offers Goldilocks ripeness and silky tannins. It’s balanced by refreshing acidity and has a long, iron-laced finish. It will benefit from 3-5 years in the cellar. 545 cases produced.

Charles Heidsieck Champagne Brut Reserve (750ml)
Sparkling from Champagne, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"An enticing version ... This is long, creamy and harmonious, integrating the expressive profile with vibrant acidity and a fine, satin-like texture." - Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator

Every so often, we have to turn back to the all-time favorites, the guaranteed-to-please mainstays that have established themselves as best buys many times over, and in Champagne, that means Charles Heidsieck. This renowned, benchmark grande marque has done as much as any of Champagne's iconic houses to establish the category on the world stage and make Champagne the global phenomenon that it is.

After all, it was the house's namesake, Charles Heidsieck himself, who took Champagne to new heights of popularity in the United States, so much so that he came to be known far and wide by the moniker Champagne Charlie. Today, the house remains a reference-point brand for consistent excellence from the top of the range to the entry-level, as you'll clearly see in this latest release of the flagship Brut Réserve.

Equal parts Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with 20% Pinot Meunier rounding out the cépage, this rendition is "generous and inviting, with loads of classic charm" as noted by Jeb Dunnuck's Champagne critic Audrey Frick in her 92-point review. Several other notable critics concur – the Brut Réserve is a quintessential expression that delivers what all Champagne aficionados are looking for.

93WS 93JS 92WA 92JD 92V 92WE

An enticing version, with richly toasted brioche and roasted hazelnut on the nose transitioning to underscore flavors of ripe black cherry, crème de cassis, gingerbread, lime blossoms and crystallized honey. This is long, creamy and harmonious, integrating the expressive profile with vibrant acidity and a fine, satin-like texture. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Disgorged 2022. Drink now through 2029. 5,000 cases imported.

93 points, Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator (Nov 2024)

A creamy and silky champagne that has notes of lemons, pastries and apple compote on the nose. It’s medium-bodied and layered with fine bubbles and tasty pastry notes on the fresh, balanced finish. Drink now.

93 points, Claire Nesbitt, James Suckling (Aug 2024)

The NV Brut Réserve, a combination of more than 60 different crus and 150 wines, evokes aromas of brioche, pastry, ripe orchard fruits, beeswax and spices. Medium to full-bodied, enrobing and charming, it has a fleshy core of fruit, a pinpoint mousse and delicate acids, making it a charming, delicate Champagne. This blend consists of 40% Pinot Noir, 40% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Meunier, with 50% vins de réserve, and was disgorged with a dosage of nine grams per liter.

92 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Oct 2024)

The NV Champagne Reserve Brut, a blend of 40% each Pinot Noir and Chardonnay and 20% Meunier, pours a yellow/golden color and is generous and inviting, with loads of classic charm in its notes of brioche, ripe peaches, honied citrus, and fresh flowers. The palate is medium framed but fleshed out by a rounded mousse and has a suggestion of decadence as well as a clean finish. This highly appealing multi-vintage cuvée sees a high percentage of reserve wine going into the final blend, which adds a very well-integrated and layered feel. Drink now or over the coming 5-7 years. Disgorged 2022.

92 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2024)

The NV Brut Réserve blends 40% each of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir with 20% Pinot Meunier, containing up to 50% aged reserve wines. It spent four years on lees and opens with its characteristic smoky, sultry reduction. Redcurrant and lemon follow, leading to an ultra-clear, bright, vivid palate that is limpid with Chardonnay and structured with Pinot fruit, managing to be rich and rounded without a gram of fat. Supple autolysis appears as slightly peppery rye crumb, sitting well with this reductive style. Dosage is 9 grams per liter. (Lot L230718-3167)

92 points, Anne Krebiehl, Vinous (Dec 2024)

A vibrant Champagne with a white fruit aroma offers a touch of maturity and richness that is typical of the Charles Heidsieck style. Red apples, citrus and toast give the wine a fine balance.

2022 Vieux Donjon Rouge (750ml)
Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Vieux Donjon's unblemished reputation for quintessential Châteauneuf class is on full display in the triumphant 2022 rendition. With rock-solid accolades from across the critical landscape, the 2022 once again reaffirms the estate's place as one of the most consistent sources of bang-for-the-buck excellence in the entire appellation.

"This is a brilliant wine that's already drinking well but will evolve gracefully over the next 15-20 years." - Jeb Dunnuck

Whereas some vintages of this old-school standard bearer require several years to reach approachability, the 2022 offers the best of both worlds, with an already enchanting profile that exudes youthful purity and panache while maintaining "classic Châteauneuf richness that shows good balance and energy" according to Wine Spectator. We just secured this parcel at a jaw-dropping price that beats the rest of the market by a wide margin, so fans of the estate and avid Châteauneuf collectors can swing for the fences and stock the cellar high and deep with one of the smartest buys of the vintage.

95JD 95WS 95D 94JS 93V

The 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape from Le Vieux Donjon is a beautifully balanced, classic expression of the appellation, as well as this estate. It has a vivid purple hue, with ripe berry fruits, peppery herbs, floral, and sandalwood-like aromatics. Medium to full-bodied, it’s seamless and elegant on the palate, with ultra-fine tannins and a great finish. This is a brilliant wine that’s already drinking well but will evolve gracefully over the next 15-20 years.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2025)

An excellent example of classic Châteauneuf richness that shows good balance and energy. Juicy black raspberry, licorice and ganache are wrapped around a ballast of graphite shavings, while the refined structure reins in the warm, mouthcoating palate. Hints of grilled herbs, brown bread and lavender smoke detail the long, textured and mineral-rich finish. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Best from 2026 through 2038. 5,000 cases made, 1,200 cases imported.

95 points, Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator (Mar 2025)

Enjoyably fresh and fluid style, good acidity, with lip-smacking raspberry and strawberry fruit. Good feeling of lift and drinkability considering the extreme vintage conditions. Elegant, fine tannins. Fermented in concrete vats, then aged in concrete and old foudres.

95 points, Matt Walls, Decanter (Sep 2023)

A well-crafted, balanced and refined red. This has notes of sweet cherries, dried herbs, red berries and mild spices. Medium- to full-bodied with fine yet firm tannins. Juicier at the center with a solid frame of tannins coating the palate at this stage. Bright fruit with plenty of vitality in the long, peppery finish. Try after 2026.

94 points, James Suckling (Apr 2024)

As is custom at this address, the 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape spent one year in old oak foudres. Neatly blending 75% Grenache with 10% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% Cinsault, it unwinds with notes of violet, forest strawberry, licorice, black cherry and graphite. Open-knit and inviting, the 2022 is gently framed by ripe tannins that won’t need as much time to mellow as in 2020 or 2019. Finishing on a savory note, this expressive Châteauneuf smoothly integrates its 15.25% alcohol and comes highly recommended.

Hakata 10yr Sherry Cask Finish Japanese Whisky
From Japan
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"Esoteric to some, utterly singular any way you slice it, this trio offers Japanese whisky fans an experience unlike any other." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

The Hakata range isn't exactly boutique or under the radar, but the spirits themselves nonetheless occupy a space all their own in the broader realm of Japanese whisky. They were born as an experiment over 20 years ago by Naomi Mitsuya, master distiller at Fukuoka's Hikari Distillery, with no real agenda or aim. Using the distillery's highly traditional malted barley and koji rice mash, he filled the distillate into top-quality Spanish sherry casks and let them sit completely undisturbed for years on end, letting the casks themselves and the region's extreme continental climate variations work their magic. The results were unexpected, to say the least, but also incredibly compelling, leading to some big scores from Whisky Advocate.

After a recent tasting of the entire range, we were equally enthralled. Each bottling represents the quintessential umami character of artisan koji whisky, but as one would expect, the varying timespans in the sherry casks have imparted a different expression of the casks' influence. The 10 Year Old is, of course, the most primary, with a fruit-forward core, spicy edges, and clear sherry tones. The 12 Year Old is the most umami of the three, this element taking center stage throughout in a savory, salty melange accented with dried fruit and barrel character. Finally, the 16 Year Old offers up a wildly complex profile. "A spectacular drink" according to Whisky Advocate's Jonny McCormick, it carries all manner of luxurious fruit, from rich citrus to dark berries, while the perfectly integrated umami and sherry tones play in absolute harmony in the background.

Whether you're a hardcore fan of the koji heritage or just an adventurous spirits lover, the Hakata whiskies belong on your shortlist of must-try discoveries, and our market-best pricing on all three gives you the perfect excuse to dive in.

93WHA

Initially, there are dark sherry notes of plum, black cherry, and soy sauce, with a lift of gentle spices, then it evolves, adding caramel- ized roasted garlic, lemongrass, ginger, and concentrated notes of aged balsamic vinegar. A burst of browned butter on the palate, followed by nutty flavors, with ripe plum, damson, a dash of balsamic, clove, pepper, melted chocolate, and a mouth-filling finish of powdery cocoa.

Lochlea Fallow Edition Third Crop Single Malt Scotch Whisky
From Ayrshire, Lowlands, Scotland
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Campfire season is now officially underway, even here in Florida (which just means it's not sweltering), and we all know a good dram in hand can turn a good campfire into a great campfire. These four picks on offer today are all stunning hidden gems with style and character that match the season to a T, no matter what your preference is.

Scotch fans take note, the 94-point Lochlea Fallow Edition Single Malt is matured in ex-oloroso Sherry butts to bring forth a clear autumnal character, showcasing all the gorgeous oloroso depth and beautifully charming profile of Lochlea's malt. This is the final release of this bottling, as Lochlea is turning its focus to more experimental and single-cask expressions, along with their core line-up. It's impressively complex for a young whisky, but it's also just flat-out delicious. ""Lochlea’s Fallow Edition is in its final release," notes Whisky Advocate, "and boy, is it going out with a bang."

Hand-selected exclusively for B-21, Elijah Craig's 9 Year Old Barrel #6871256 shows the famed profile of this Heaven Hill benchmark at its pinnacle. Bottled at a full barrel proof of 120.4, this cask is full-throttle intensity and opulence from start to finish. A towering aromatic profile defined by deep red fruits and luxurious barrel character leads the way, while the palate is a kaleidoscope of depth and complexity riding a weighty but balanced texture to an incredibly refined, drawn-out finish, "arguably the most compelling B-21 single-cask bourbon in our inventory," according to Spirits Buyer Andrew Kitz.

For the rum fanatics, Mexico's Alambique Serrano may not be a household name, but the craftsmanship and work ethic of this third-generation distillery are undeniable, leading to the La Sociedad Florida Rum Society Cask, the very first Florida Rum Society single-cask selection from "south of the border." It's an 11 on the intensity scale, a full cask-strength stunner that's unlike anything else we've ever come across in the rum category. "Not one for the faint of heart, it's a big, brash powerhouse that challenges the established rum conventions in the best possible way," notes Andrew.

Finally, full still-strength mezcals and destilados are a relative rarity, and that's only one reason we jumped on PM Spirits Project's Destilado de Agave Espadin.  More than anything, it's immediately apparent that this is artisanal Espadin desitlado of the highest order and the maestro who made it knows his craft. The varietal purity and focus are second to none, even for at a monumental 62% ABV, and the myriad layers of complexity are almost too much to describe in one go. As B-21's Andrew Kitz notes, "The push-pull tension is really something to experience, and I have no doubt that the more I go back to it, the more subtle nuances and facets I’ll find that I somehow missed the first time around." We secured all that was left at a must-see, market-best price and once this is batch is gone, we won't be seeing more of it.

94WHA

Meant to drum up images of autumn on the farm, Lochlea’s Fallow Edition is in its final release, and boy, is it going out with a bang. The nose is redolent with wood spice, raisins, vanilla pastry cream, raspberries, Nutella, and cooked red fruit. The light-yet-luscious palate takes those notes up another notch: berries and raisins blend wonderfully with sweet malt, Black Forest cake, chocolate ganache, and cinnamon powder. A dram you’ll want to keep drinking...while you can! (Release date: 1/25)

2018 Chateau Saint-Pierre (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Saint-Julien, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Producing its outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated Bordeaux Blend from a small 17-hectare vineyard not far from Beychevelle and Ducru-Beaucaillou, the centuries' old Chateau Saint-Pierre was revitalized in the 1980s by the energetic Henri Martin, known as a driving force behind innovations at Chateau Latour and as the founder of Chateau Gloria. Planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller parcels of Merlot and Cab Franc on the gravelly Beychevelle plateau, the vines at Saint Pierre average 50 years of age, tended by a team of 45 vineyard workers under the direction of Remy Di Constanzio, former technical director of Cos D'Estournel. Now owned by Henri's daughter Françoise and her husband Jean-Louis Triaud.

96WI 95WA 95V 95WS 94JD 94JS

Saint-Pierre 2018 has a deep garnet-purple color. It gives up compelling scents of fresh blackcurrants, black cherry compote, and boysenberries, plus touches of star anise, cardamom, and incense, with a waft of wood smoke. Full-bodied, the palate has a plush texture and bags of black fruit, finishing long and fragrant.

96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Feb 2023)

Composed of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot, the 2018 Saint-Pierre bursts from the glass with a glorious perfume of kirsch, blackcurrant pastilles, black raspberries and cedar chest with hints of red roses, pencil shavings and spice box. The medium to full-bodied palate coats the mouth with velvety tannins and beautifully knit freshness, supporting the generous black and red berry layers, finishing long and perfumed. It needs a good four years for the oak to marry and the fruit to really hit its stride, then should drink a further 20+ years.

95 points, Wine Advocate (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Saint-Pierre is even more intense than the Gloria on the nose, actually reminding me of the Léoville Poyferré that I tasted alongside. Copious black cherries, lavender, incense and violet just storm from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit laced with cedar and charcoal. Delivering wonderful delineation and focus and a disarming silky finish, this fulfills the promise that it showed from barrel. An outstanding Saint-Julien that should age well over the next 20–30 years.

95 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Mar 2021)

Sports a beam of cassis, plum puree and blackberry sauce running through the middle while roasted applewood, violet and sweet tobacco notes run along the edges. Everything meets and then extends through the finish, with an echo of warm cast iron at the very end. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2024 through 2038.

95 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2021)

With an almost Pauillac-like stature and structure, the 2018 Château Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) (77% Cabernet Sauvignon and 23% Merlot) offers a powerful bouquet of black currants, lead pencil, spicy oak, and chocolate and shows more earth and tobacco as it sits in the glass. Deeply hued, full-bodied, and concentrated, it has a stacked mid-palate, building tannins, and one heck of a great finish. It needs to be forgotten for 7-8 years and will keep for 2-3 decades.

94+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

Aromas of blackberries, currants, dried earth, coffee and chocolate orange, as well as some crushed stone. It’s medium-bodied with firm, tight-grained tannins. Fresh with lingering citrus zest and bitter chocolate. Fine texture. Try from 2024.

2020 Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino La Casa (750ml)
Sangiovese from Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

B-21 Brunello mainstay Caparzo has experienced a stellar ascent under the ownership of Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini since 1998, and they're arguably producing their best wines ever. At least, that's our take from this trio of fantastic new releases from winemaker Massimo Bracalente.

The 2020 vintage's best wines strike a remarkable balance that defies the warm growing conditions, and Caparzo nails that sweet spot perfectly with this 95-point normale bottling. "This is really pretty ... Creamy and so polished. It goes on for minutes. A graceful and complex 2020 Brunello," notes James Suckling, hinting at one of the vintage's finest virtues, its approachability in the near term. While some 2020s are indeed blockbusters of huge structure and ripeness, they lack the graceful balance that defines the best Brunellos, but fans of the world's best Sangioveses can rest assured that all the varietal's most striking and important features can be found in spades in this stunning expression of "ample energy and dimension."

The most prized parcel on the estate is the old-vine plot next to the historic Tuscan farmhouse, appropriatey called Vigna La Casa, from which comes the La Casa bottling, a sterling terroir expression that always takes the estate's signature style to the next level. "A real charmer with ripe tannins, even, seamless acidity, and a great finish," notes Jeb Dunnuck's Italy critic Audrey Frick in her 96-point review. The 2020 La Casa boasts "otherworldly" balance per Vinous' Eric Guido, and James Suckling even floats the proposition that it could outpace the prodigious 2019 vintage.

Finally, the 2019 Brunello Riserva releases are finally hitting the market, and they're delivering on all the promise and hype the vintage has received since the reviews started coming out. As good as the 2019 normale and La Casa wines were from Caparzo, we knew the Riserva would be a knock-out, and it's here and ready to prove us correct. "The Caparzo 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva makes a terrific first impression thanks to the intensity of its dark fruit aromas and its well-integrated spice. This is a full-bodied wine with deep layers of richness and velvety tannins," writes Monica Larner for Wine Advocate. This is a classically styled Brunello that will cruise in the cellar thanks to its "dramatic length and structure," as Vinous' Eric Guido describes it, shining right alongside previous best-selling, benchmark vintages like 2015 and 2016.

This is really pretty, with cherry, peach, and orange-peel character. It’s medium-bodied with very fine tannins and a long, long finish. Creamy and so polished. It goes on for minutes. A graceful and complex 2020 Brunello. Is this better than the 2019? Drink after 2027, but already beautiful to taste.

97 points, James Suckling (Sep 2024)

Though compact and tightly knit, this red delivers a beam of strawberry, raspberry, mineral and spice flavors, and there's a hint of milk chocolate as this plays out on the finish. Offers beautiful balance and a resonant aftertaste. Best from 2028 through 2046. 1,666 cases made, 416 cases imported.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Mar 2025)

Quite pale in color, the 2020 Casa has appealing aromatic notes of strawberry jam, white chocolate, fresh rose petal, and underbrush. Quite enjoyable now, it offers medium concentration, supple tannins, and a sweeping fresh acidity that lifts the finish.

Bernheim Barrel Proof Batch A225 Wheat Whiskey (750ml)
From Bardstown, Kentucky
B-21 Top Recommendation

A truly exceptional brand under the Heaven Hill banner, Bernheim still maintains a somewhat low profile compared to its HH stablemats like Craig, Rittenhouse, Larceny, and the like. The innovative, highly acclaimed wheated mashbill has built the whiskey's reputation into something of a cult favorite, and that's just for the flagship Straight Wheat release. Once they started releasing Barrel Proof batches twice a year, demand hit new highs, and it's always a struggle to keep a particular batch in stock for long.

The latest run, Batch A225, is sure to continue to the trend with its newly published, stellar 95-point score from Whisky Advocate, but fortunately we played our cards right and stocked up while we could. This is pure unadulterated wheated goodness, with all the gentle decadence we've come to know and love from the Bernheim profile. Even at full barrel proof, the aromas and flavors are so expressive and delineated that you'll be hard-pressed to keep your hands off it.

As the distillery dials in on the style, these highly limited expressions seem to get better and better with each successive release, so it's no surprise that A225 is arguably the best yet and serious score for keen-eyed whiskey aficionados.

95WHA

The first of two annual batches, the nose offers pleasant aromas of vanilla, Golden Grahams, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, and a zing of red fruit. The palate offers a mouthwatering combination of cinnamon spice, vanilla soft serve ice cream, Rolo candy, dark chocolate, and a hint of nutmeg. The balanced aging comes through on the finish, along with chocolate and oak spice.

"Anyone looking for Oregon Pinot Noir purity and transparent communication of terroir from the soil to the vine to the bottle must explore Kelley Fox Wines." - Eric Guido, Vinous

Long-time B-21 Pinot Noir fans are now well-familiar with the spectacular offerings from this boutique darling of the Willamette Valley scene. With a critical track record to rival pretty much anyone else in the appellation, Kelley Fox is a bona fide star these days, and we're thrilled to have such an established relationship with her and her wines.

This outstanding set of releases showcases exactly why Eric Guido calls Kelley's wines "one of the most exciting portfolios of wines made in the United States." Her elegant vineyard-expressive Pinot Noirs and  energetic Chardonnays are sourced from many of the most iconic vineyard in the Valley. The entire line-up is full of must-try masterpieces, from the 94-point "entry-level" Mirabai to the single-vineyard stunners like the 98-point 2023 Shafer Vineyard and the pair of 2022 standouts from Maresh Vineyard, one of the oldest sites in Oregon. Of these two, it's particularly worth noting that Kelley won't be making wine from Maresh going forward, so get your hands on them now. The whites are equally compelling, and not just the Chards (although these do present some of the sharpest buys in the category, all at under $40). Her Grüner and Pinot Blanc are a testament to her unwavering belief in these varietals, and the critics seem to agree.

Any way you look at it, these are among the most consistently excellent wines out there, not only in Oregon but in the entire country. If you haven't jumped on board the Kelley Fox wagon, you have no idea what you're missing.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Liminal Maresh Vineyard comes from own-rooted vines originally established by Jim and Martha Maresh in 1970. “These vines are very self-regulating,” proprietor and winemaker Kelley Fox explains. “When I was doing canopy work out there they didn’t need hardly any of the thinning or shoot positioning that the other vines do.” Grapes were destemmed, and the wine was matured for 10 months in used French oak. The nose is bursting with pomegranate, and with time in the glass, it reveals nuances of mixed tea leaves, bergamot and earth. The light-bodied palate combines tea-like tannins and vibrant acidity with concentrated, fragrant flavors, and it has a long, latent finish. 159 cases were made.

The 2018 Château Labegorce is a perfumed, already complex Margaux based on 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Its medium ruby hue gives way to lovely notes of blueberries, raspberries, flowers, sandalwood, and assorted baking spice cabinet-like nuances. Medium to full-bodied, with beautifully pure fruit and silky tannins, it's a wine that grows on you with time in the glass. It's not a blockbuster, but it exudes elegance and class as well as balance. Enjoy bottles any time over the coming 20-25 years or more.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Labégorce is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot. It has 14% alcohol. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps from the glass with a beautiful perfume of kirsch, black cherry compote and cassis, plus hints of licorice, lilacs and baking spices. The medium-bodied palate is elegantly played with soft tannins and compelling freshness supporting the fragrant red and black fruits, finishing on a spicy note.

93 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Labégorce is a plump, juicy Margaux that will drink well right out of the gate. Succulent dark cherry, plum, spice, licorice, chocolate and new French oak are all kicked up in this decidedly opulent, heady Margaux. Soft curves and pliant fruit add to its raciness. Drink it over the next 10-15 years.

93 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

Rich blackberry and fig fruits, well structured dominant tannins that remain fairly tight at this point, exuberant turmeric, black pepper and dried herbs, with a flash of heat on the finish. Atypical in the lineup, reflecting the heat of the vintage, but a ton of pleasure to be found here. 33% new oak. Harvest September 20 to October 15, technical director Marjolaine de Coninck.

Strong grilled oak on the nose that will settle down but definitely needs time. Black fruit comes through on the palate, and a ton of juice that is shot through the fruit and helps the entire thing to power along enjoyably. Good-quality.

Restrained, vibrant and fruity riserva with red cherries and raspberries, potpourri and even incense. Medium- to full-bodied with leafy flavor, velvety and ripe tannins yet chewy acidity and a chalky finish. Good blood-orange aftertaste. Better in two or three years but already so delicious.

96 points, James Suckling (Dec 2024)

In the bottle with the black label, the Caparzo 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva makes a terrific first impression thanks to the intensity of its dark fruit aromas and its well-integrated spice. This is a full-bodied wine with deep layers of richness and velvety tannins. There is a hint of concentrated fruit sourness (and sweetness too, from the grape skins) that will subside as this 20,000-bottle release takes on more age in the cellar.

94 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Nov 2024)

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva opens with a mentholated freshness, blending crushed rocks and mint with hints of tobacco, flowery underbrush and dried black cherries. Silken and serene, this displays notable weight and concentration while maintaining freshness. Waves of texturally ripe wild berry fruits. and fine-grained tannins cake the senses. The 2019 finishes with dramatic length and structure, leaving a tinge of licorice to linger on.

94 points, Eric Guido, Vinous (Nov 2024)

This is lively, displaying fresh cherry, blackberry, plum, black pepper, earth and menthol flavors. Ripe, dense and lifted by formidable tannins. All of the components seem to be in the right place as this finds its equilibrium on the lingering finish. Best from 2027 through 2043. 1,250 cases made, 200 cases imported.

94 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Mar 2025)

Dark berry compote on the nose, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva offers notes of wild fresh herbs, clove, and a touch of balsamic. The palate shows herbal freshness and a taut acidity, slightly rustic crunchy tannins, and a medium-long savory finish. No need to wait as this wine is drinking with pleasurable forwardness.

94 points, Vanessa Conlin, Wine Independent (Dec 2024)

Made since 1980, Caparzo’s Riserva is selected at harvest by consulting oenologist team, Paolo and Jacopo Vagaggini. It ages primarily in large Slavonian oak casks with a short passage in French oak tonneaux of 750 litres. Still youthfully restrained, the nose flirts with cedar, leather and heather, then the palate changes gear with its overtly powerful drive of substantial yet sophisticated chalky tannins and brisk acidity. By comparison, subtle flavours of wet stone and polished red cherry seem polite and tame for the time being. This will need time to develop into its full expression.

Remi Landier / PM Spirits Collab Fins Bois VSOP Cognac (750ml)
From Cognac, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"Landier is a name that more Cognac enthusiasts should know." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

As far as Cognac's six recognized crus go, Fins Bois may not carry as much cachet as Petite and Grande Champagne, but that just means you can find truly spectacular, artisanal gems at a fraction of what you'd pay for a similar expression from the more esteemed crus. Remi Landier may not be a household name in the US market, but the domaine has become a reference-point for Fins Bois under the direction of fifth-generation owner Geraldine Landier. Her collaboration with PM Spirits Nicolas Palazzi has resulted in few must-try expressions to come to the states.

This highly intriguing VSOP was made entirely from estate-grown fruit, mostly Ugni Blanc, and double distilled on a Charentais pot-still in 2015, after which it spend five-plus years in used French oak and few months finsihing medium-toast new barrels. As Fins Bois goes, this VSOP is surprisingly high-toned, bright, and loaded with personality, despite its young age. There are no rough edges and nothing is out of place. It's just pure Cognac class with uncommon complexity for the VSOP category. Perhaps the most surprising aspect is just how uplifting and refreshing it is, while still showcasing plenty of Cognac's savory side. That lends it to a variety of settings, and it will surely please a broad audience, so even you're not into Cognac (yet), this is one that will take a good part of the way there.

93AK

Although not widely available in the U.S. market, Remi Landier is a reference-point, small grower in the Fins Bois cru with fifth-generation owner Geraldine Landier at the helm. This Ugni Blanc-dominated VSOP was double-distilled in 2015 on a Charentais copper pot still and bottled in 2022 after five-plus years in used French oak and six months finishing in new, medium-toast barrels. An elegant, high-toned bouquet starts with cream-sicle, orange sherbet, and aromatic vanilla before moving on to more concentrated notes of apple candy, orange essence, cherry undertones, and milk chocolate. A touch of fine, chalky minerality accents everything with bright precision. The palate comes off with medium-plus weight, defined by very nicely balanced baking spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar, while ripe red fruit and candied orange peel contrast nicely with fragrant potpourri, dusty wood undertones, and dark tobacco. Those balanced spices continue to hold sway on the medium-length finish, which also lends a beautiful freshness, inviting one return to the glass after another. This is a perfect finisher to an al fresco lunch on a bright, crisp autumn day, and the supremely charming character, despite its young age, suggests that Landier is a name that more Cognac enthusiasts should know.

Hakata 12yr Sherry Cask Finish Japanese Whisky

Fleeting vegetal aromas of bok choy, with ground ginger, coffee bean, and marron glacé. The umami is strong on this one, but there’s balance on the nose from black forest gateau notes and a hint of oak astringency. Raisin and black cherry flavors draw on a deep pool of umami notes, with soy sauce, shredded ginger, balsamic vinegar, plain chocolate, and a growing presence of oak tannins.

2009 Lopez de Heredia Vina Tondonia Reserva (750ml)
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

A Rioja lover's dream assortment, these traditionally styled selections from Lopez de Heredia come from one of the region's most esteemed Bodegas with over a century of expertise as grower-producers, their legendary, long-lived Riojas released only after lengthy aging in their famously moldy and cobweb-laced cellars, perfect for mixing a case or two at a price that "seems like a steal" according to Wine and Spirits.

As the last remaining family-run Bodegas in Rioja, winemaking at Lopez de Heredia has remained remarkably unchanged since its inception in 1877, crafting its wines in the Vina Tondonia winery in Haro with only estate-grown fruit, fermenting with natural yeasts and aging for extended periods in wood before bottling without filtration and further aging in the bottle.

Summing up the long-lived aging potential of each of these Lopez de Heredia selections, critic Neal Martin declares "a bottle of Lopez de Heredia is an individual and each time you meet, you may see a different side to its personality," reflecting the pure authenticity, remarkable ageability and striking complexity of these top vintages and promising pleasurable drinking ahead for Rioja fans and Spanish wine collectors who act quickly to secure their picks from this value packed offer.

"Massolino is another winery that has been on a roll of late. These new releases are stellar." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

One of Piedmont's leading lights, Massolino is a perennial standout among Piedmont fans for their super-refined, elegant house style. From the village wines to the single-cru expressions, you'll find captivating profiles that have won critical accolades year in and year out. We just sourced a must-see parcel of some of the estate's finest recent releases, showcasing the impeccable excellence that characterizes every bottle of Massolino.

Leading off is the 2021 village Barbaresco, a blend from the Albesani, Starderi, and Serraboella crus. As Galloni explains, "Readers will find a super-classic Barbaresco [with] lifted aromatics, mid-weight structure and persistent yet fine tannins." The triple 95-point, "very impressive and detailed" 2021 Albesani Barbaresco takes things up a notch - "a super-classic wine that ... possesses notable structure and the understated depth that is common of Barbaresco" according to Galloni.

Finally, Piedmont fans shouldn't overlook the other varietal gems in the Massolino stable, highlighted by their lovely, utterly charming 2023 Dolcetto and the 93-point 2021 Barbera Gisep, a blend of three parcels within the Barolo DOCG designation with more serious pedigree than is typically found in this "humble" Piedmont varietal. There's no doubt that Massolino should be on every Piedmont lover's short list, and these latest releases show one of the region's great estates at the top of their game.

Also a youthful dark ruby/magenta color, the 2021 Barbaresco Albesani reveals impressive depth in its layered notes of preserved red cherries, cedar, dusty earth, potpourri, roses, and raspberries. It’s medium-bodied but expands on the palate with a velvety texture and offers ripe tannins, seamless acidity, and wonderful length. It’s a very impressive and detailed wine to drink over the next 20 years.

95 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2024)

This powerful red boasts cherry, strawberry, rose, earth, tar and underbrush aromas and flavors. The savory notes emerge as this builds to a long, solidly built finish. Shows excellent harmony, texture and staying power, with a minty finish. Best from 2029 through 2048. 330 cases made, 100 cases imported.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Mar 2025)

Bright and fresh with notes of red berries, dried rose hips and asphalt. Medium-bodied. It has a meaty structure with very fine tannins and bright acidity. Shows tension and focus. Spicy at the end. Try after 2026.

95 points, James Suckling (Apr 2024)

In the bottle with the cream-colored label, the Massolino 2021 Barbaresco Albesani shows redcurrant and tart berry aromas. It also has a hint of something metallic with rusty nail or tin can. The wine reveals a fluid personality with a few exciting aromatic changes along the way. That versatility bodes well for its future evolution. This is a 4,000-bottle release.

94+ points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jan 2025)

The 2021 Barbaresco Albesani is a super-classic wine that is going to need time to come around. It possesses notable structure and the understated depth that is common of Barbaresco. Time in the glass brings out scents of herbs, white pepper, autumn leaves and spice. All this needs is time in bottle.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2024)

Firm and structured, this wine boasts dark ripe fruits that draw the attention as aromas of blue violets lead deeper into the glass. Juicy dark cherries flavors form the core of the palate as drying blackberries, and hints of plum weave across the firm and tannic palate that is lifted by mouthwatering acidity. High N' Wicked The Judge 14yr Whiskey (750ml)
From Tennessee
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Founded by two veterans of spirits giant Brown-Forman, independent bottler High N' Wicked has a made a name for themselves in the craft whiskey scene by their access to superb stocks from the country's best sources. Their series of highly limited, age-stated releases have been cult collector's hits since their debut in 2020, but now you can add "stunning value star" to their list of must-try offerings.

When we tasted the High N' Wicked Kentucky Straight Bourbon earlier this year, it was clear from the get-go that everything about this whiskey was done with pure pleasure in mind. "Complex and enticing," according to Wine Enthusiast's 95-point review, this 5-year-old gem boasts quite a high rye content, but its sweet mashbill finds the perfect pocket of balance and opulence that make it incredibly approachable for a wide audience.

Of course, you'll also want to pay close attention to the The Judge and The Jury. The market on age-stated American whiskey is through the roof, and you're almost always looking at triple digits for anything with this kinds of number on them. That makes this pair a can't-miss, flat-out steal in the category. After 14 years in new #4 char oak, High N' Wicked gave the 96-point The Judge an addition six months in Hungarian Tokaji dessert wine casks. Ramping up the intensity, the 94-point The Jury saw an extra year in the new #4 char barrel, finishing in a premium ex-Madeira cask. Nothing added and nothing chill-filtered out, these are luxurious, altogether singular expressions that we seldom see in the bourbon category.

Warm vanilla aromas welcome this limited release bourbon. The velvety palate echoes that vanilla note, layering it with hazelnut, cocoa powder and oak, polished with cinnamon sparkle and a hint of orange peel. This would make a great old-fashioned. A very elegant and polished Margaux with great structure and an attractive touch of herbal freshness, then a delicate touch of sweetness at the long, fine finish. A blend of 38 per cent cabernet sauvignon, 52 per cent merlot, six per cent cabernet franc and four per cent petit verdot.

95 points, James Suckling (Jan 2019)

From an estate on the uptick and showing beautifully on two separate occasions, the 2016 Château Labégorce is a head-turner of a Margaux that’s based on 52% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot that was brought up in 45% new oak, with the balance in once-used barrels. Sexy notes of blackcurrants, black raspberries, crushed flowers, sandalwood, and incense all flow to a medium to full-bodied, fabulously textured Margaux that carries ripe tannins, loads of fruit and richness, and a great finish. Since arriving in 2009, Marjolaine de Coninck has resurrected this estate and the wines now play with the top in the appellation. Give bottles 3-5 years and enjoy over the following two decades or more.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2019)

The 2016 Labégorce comes from a property that has really been getting its act together in recent years. It has a gorgeous, very pure blackberry, raspberry and pressed violet bouquet, almost understated, but there is real focus here. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin and quite Pauillac-like in style, and there is impressive density on the finish. Wonderful. Look out for this.

94 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Jan 2019)

This estate on the north side of the village of Margaux is performing at its peak. As befits the vintage it's a rich wine with big tannins. But it also has the style that characterizes a Margaux, with a smooth, perfumed aftertaste. Drink from 2025.

94 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2019)

Concentrated but restrained with old school charm and an abundance of muscular tannins, it's easy to feel the heart of this wine, packed with liqourice, slate, black chocolate, cassis, brambled hedgerow, aniseed and fennel, with plenty of grip. Years ahead of it, an impressive wine in this exceptional vintage, offering good value. Harvest September 4 to October 21. 50% new oak, technical director Marjolaine de Coninck.

94 points, Jane Anson (Mar 2023)

The 2016 Labégorce is composed of 52% Merlot, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot, aged in 45% new and 55% one-year-old French oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps out of the glass with gregarious cassis, kirsch and black raspberries, candied violets, dark chocolate and spearmint. Medium-bodied, elegant, fresh and with exciting intensity, it delivers a fantastically long, fragrant finish. 12,000 cases produced.

93+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Nov 2018)

Bravo for a strong performance in an excellent vintage from this non-classified estate in the heart of the Margaux appellation. Not as diaphanous as the region’s top-tier wines, but has smooth tannins. The 45% new oak ageing is nicely integrated on a palate that reflects charm from the majority Merlot in the blend, with breadth and depth that outclasses some underperforming classified growths. 2018 Chateau Troplong Mondot (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France

Here's an exciting opportunity to enjoy a vertical of outstanding new releases from Chateau Troplong Mondot, three incredibly promising vintages garnering multiple 100 pt. scores and wowing critics across the board, each built for three decades of pleasurable drinking and unbeatably priced to over deliver value.

Perched in a spectacular location with a 360-degree view overlooking St. Emilion, Chateau Troplong Mondot is marked by the prominent water tower at St. Emilion's highest point, its stunning new cellars viewed from above on a glass catwalk reflecting the estate's dramatic transformation since its purchase by insurance company SCOR in 2017. Immediately hiring Bordeaux veteran Aymeric de Gironde, formerly of Pichon Baron and Cos d'Estournel, to lead the estate, Troplong Mondot pivoted to a classical, terroir-driven style, identifying the unique qualities of even the smallest parcels of its organically farmed 65 hectares of vineyards and reducing the amount of new oak to allow their rich minerality to shine through, described by Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson as reflecting "a more evident respect for the powerful terroir that does not need to be overly dressed up" under the guidance of renowned consulting enologist Thomas Duclos. Vinified in vats instead of barrels to preserve freshness, the 98 pt. 2018 Chateau Troplong Mondot is "simply breathtaking" according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, aged in 60% new oak with a small percentage in large vats and amphorae to yield a Troplong with "brighter red fruit flavors" that's "backed by a distinct flinty minerality" according to the Wine Spectator's James Molesworth. The  100 pt. 2020 Chateau Troplong Mondot is "wonderfully exuberant right out of the gate" according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, with aromatic, rich dark fruit described as "powerful and dense" by the Wine Enthusiast's Roger Voss that "ends with a whoosh of freshness and lift" according to Jane Anson.

Describing these recent vintages as marking "the upward trajectory and unveiling of the new expression of this very special site at Troplong Mondot," the Wine Advocate's William Kelley declared, "what an exhilarating ride this is!" while Jeb Dunnuck unequivocally declares "there is no denying the incredible quality from this chateau today" – these value priced Chateau Troplong Mondot selections offering an exciting opportunity for Bordeaux fans and collectors to mix a case or pick a few favorites and jump aboard St. Emilion's rising star for the thrilling journey ahead.

This is a very linear red and layered at the same time, showing blackberry, blueberry, black-truffle, bark and stone character. Chalk and minerality, too. It’s full-bodied and well framed with gorgeous intensity and freshness. Muscular with wonderful structure and brightness. Salty and savory notes on the finish. Try after 2024.

98 points, James Suckling (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Troplong Mondot will take readers who haven't tasted these wines in a few years aback. Stunning in its aromatic presence, the 2018 is silky, medium-in body and super-refined. Once again, I am blown away by the wine's total sense of precision. The Cabernets are only 15% of the blend, and yet the 2018 is so strongly marked by floral and savory accents. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, rose petal and lavender all build in the glass. The 2018 is regal, refined and absolutely exquisite.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Troplong Mondot is blended of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, with 15% alcohol. Deep garnet-purple colored, with considerable coaxing and swirling it slowly emerges from the glass like a waking giant, building to a towering bouquet of preserved plums, blueberry pie and Morello cherries with gentler wafts of violets, star anise, fruitcake and cast-iron pan. The concentrated, full-bodied palate possesses impressive purity and brightness of fruit commingled with richer, riper elements and supported by firm, velvety tannins, finishing with lovely freshness and on a lingering ferrous note. It's a wine that's not just delicious, it's seriously interesting too.

96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2021)

The 2018 Château Troplong Mondot showed beautifully. Based on 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc, it reveals a dense purple color as well as ripe beautiful aromatics of black cherries, red plums, graphite, espresso, Asian spices, and gravelly earth. Beautiful on the palate as well, it's medium to full-bodied and has a rounded, expansive texture, plenty of mid-palate depth, building tannins, and present yet integrated oak. "The combination of power, depth and energy makes this impossible to ignore." - Eric Guido, Vinous

As one of Montalcino's reference-point estates, Livio Sassetti's Pertimali holds a special place in the hearts of collectors. In the banner vintage of 2019, the estate's Montosoli terroir shines with special brilliance and the Brunello is high on everyone's list. The wine is always known for its precision and finesse, and this rendition is no exception, as Sassetti's various Montosli parcels all produced exceptionally high quality fruit.

"The 2019 leaves the senses reeling with youthful tension yet maintains fantastic energy," notes Eric Guido. James Suckling likewise describes it as "complex, yet well rounded and balanced" in his 95-point review, and with the vintage's ideal combination of phenolic depth, intensity, and structural poise, you can safely assume this 2019 stunner is set to cruise in the cellar, offering the trifecta of what we all love in great Brunello – pure Sangiovese class, transparent terroir character, and overperforming value, especially for a wine with such outstanding cellar potential.

Really pretty, sweet berries, cherries and fresh flowers on the nose. Orange peel, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with very fine tannins that are polished and attractive and melt into the wine. Such purity and finesse. Drink or hold.

96 points, James Suckling (Nov 2020)

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva struts its old-school stylings with a beguiling display of musky cherry and strawberry offset by damp earth tones, hints of cedar and mint. It’s unbelievably soft and silky in texture, ushering in ripe red berry fruits laced in saline-minerals and savory spice, with building inner florals toward the close. Formidable structure awaits on the finish, yet the 2015 Riserva manages to maintain freshness, coming across as both structured for the long haul but also with enough primary appeal to warrant checking in on today. 2022 Le Pupille Saffredi (750ml)

Fattoria Le Pupille's flagship Saffredi has always been a top-echelon Tuscan collectible, with multiple 100-point vintages in its track record and a consistent reputation for delivering one of the finest expressions of the coastal Tuscan terroir available. Proprietor Elisabetta Geppetti has fashioned the estate and this benchmark wine into a standard bearer for Maremma, and now that her son, Ettore, has taken the reins, the future looks brighter than ever, as is plainly clear in the newly released, highly acclaimed 2022 Saffredi.

"To my mind, the 2022 stands apart from almost every other past vintage of Saffredi. This is a new direction for the wine that we can all happily embrace." - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

The 2022 growing season offered the winemaking team plenty of opportunity to take a different course with Saffredi, and they chose wisely. The 2022 "deftly plays upon the elegance and fruity brightness of the growing season, while also harnessing its freshness and its slightly more streamlined appeal," as noted by Monica Larner in her 98-point review. Decanter also tags it with 98 points, declaring, "The 2022 Saffredi is the result of the estate's hard work and it has paid dividends ... It's a stunner. Wow!" There isn't much more we can add to that, but to say that this is a can't-miss opportunity for savvy collectors to stack the cellar high and deep with a long-haul performer at the best price in the country.

99JS 98WA 98D

This is a young wine with terrific depth and layers of fruit. It’s full-bodied with notes of eucalyptus, lavender and sage and hints of matchsticks and oranges. It’s linear and tight at the end, with an energetic finish. Very Saffredi in nature. Better than the 2021. 65% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot and 10% petite verdot.

99 points, James Suckling (Aug 2024)

This is one of only a handful of wines made on the Tuscan Coast that has managed to interpret the vintage in such an excellent manner. The Fattoria le Pupille 2022 Saffredi (a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot) deftly plays upon the elegance and fruity brightness of the growing season, while also harnessing its freshness and its slightly more streamlined appeal. The wine is nuanced and layered with fine details that recall wild berry, spice, blue flower and blood orange. To my mind, the 2022 stands apart from almost every other past vintage of Saffredi. This is a new direction for the wine that we can all happily embrace.

98 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Feb 2025)

Menthol-infused dark berry aromas open the door to an intense and juicy mouthful of precisely wrought red and black berries and cherries. Wonderful lip-smacking sapidity and finely integrated tannins complete the package. The 2022 Saffredi is the result of the estate's hard work and it has paid dividends. Elisabetta Geppetti's son, Ettore – in just his third vintage overseeing the winemaking without the experienced hand of ex-consultant Luca d'Attoma – has beautifully interpreted the vintage. He tells me that, unusually, it took the team three harvests at different times to obtain the freshness evident in the wine. It's a stunner. Wow!

2022 Passing Time Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Red Mountain, Washington State
B-21 Top Recommendation

The Red Mountain's boysenberry and graphite aromas were not unexpected. The earthy, nutty, starchy note that reminded me of cassava was not, but I enjoyed it. Dark raspberry, Bosc pear, dark chocolate and pine needle tea flavors rumble over a chalky texture, supported by bright acidity and mildly grippy tannins. Serve with Yorkshire pudding to be revered in your time.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain comes from several stellar vineyards in the appellation, including Kiona Heart of the Hill and Klipsun Vineyard, with 2% Cabernet Franc and aged in French oak, a majority new. A swelter of rich black fruit dominates, showing the richness of the region while striking a balance between ripeness and freshness, ending medium to full-bodied in style. The tannins are strong and present but don’t get in the way of a velvety mouthfeel accented in dried herb, graphite, and leather. Drink 2025-2037.

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain shoots out of the glass with vibrant notes of black raspberries, Morello cherries, and wild blueberries, giving way to notes of mint tea, Sichuan pepper, pencil lead, and cardamom. Medium to full-bodied, the palate vibrates with energetic red and black fruit flavors, supported by fine-grained tannins and a lively line, finishing long and shimmery. Beautiful! The blend is 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc.

Impeccably structured and detailed, with expressive flavors of blackberry and cherry highlighted by mocha espresso and toasty spices as this builds richness toward polished tannins. Drink now through 2033. 325 cases made.

2022 Passing Time Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Walla Walla, Washington State
B-21 Top Recommendation

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley is from sites that are a touch cooler than Red Mountain, a truth that shows in its energetic red fruit and lightness of spice, characteristics complemented by compelling elements of tobacco and leather saddle. Sourced from Seven Hills and Pepper Bridge, the wine has an iron fist of broad tannins that should mellow with time and provide an intensity of structure now. The full-bodied power is balanced by underlying acidity and an uplift of velvety mouthfeel. Don’t miss out on this brilliant wine. Drink 2025-2037.

97 points, Virginie Boone, Jeb Dunnuck (Jul 2025)

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a lot of swirling to bring out notes of freshly crushed blackcurrants, just-picked blackberries, and cassis, plus nuances of red roses, powdered cinnamon, and tree bark. The full-bodied palate delivers a rock-solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness to match the vivacious, muscular black fruit, finishing long and fragrant.

97 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Mar 2025)

Pretty aromas of violets, cedar chest drawers, thyme and intensely sweet black-and-blueberries are joined by a saline and iron note similar to tasting blood when you bite your lip. Bright acidity and silky tannins prop up full-bodied flavors like black cherries, dark roasted Indonesian coffee and dark chocolate. This is a wine to be savored over several hours with good conversation.

The stunning 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven Hills combines 87% Cabernet Sauvignon from Discovery Vineyard and some from Wallula Vineyard, both on the Columbia River, where the fruit ripens slowly. The remainder of the wine is 9% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. It’s seamless and layered in well-integrated tannin and oak, full-bodied and muscular yet refined, with wisps of tobacco, dusty earth, and dark berry that linger along a structured finish, balanced throughout. It’s youthful and exuberant and should continue to be so for another 15 years, if not more. Drink 2025-2037.

97 points, Virginie Boone, Jeb Dunnuck (Jul 2025)

This must be Horse Heaven because this Cabernet Sauvignon's crisp acidity and lively mouthfeel put some giddyup in my step. Cassis and violets fill the air with the first pour. Then, a roasted pork shoulder rubbed with brown sugar and spices kicks in. Silky tannins are on call to back flavors like tart blackberries, cacao nibs, anise and cedar.

97 points, Michael Alberty, Wine Enthusiast (Sep 2025)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Horse Heaven Hills is a little closed and tight to start off, slowly revealing notes of boysenberries, kirsch, and fresh blackcurrants, plus suggestions of pencil shavings, wild sage, and tar. The medium to full-bodied palate is taut with crunchy black fruit flavors and great tension, textured with fine-grained tannins, finishing long and earthy. The blend is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Merlot, and 4% Cabernet Franc.

2020 Chateau Troplong Mondot (750ml)
Merlot from Saint-Emilion, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

A sensational Troplong. Vibrant and vivid, this makes you smile from the first smell: milk chocolate, floral notes of roses and lavender, wet stones, liquorice, cinnamon and ripe bramble fruits. Round and thrilling on the palate, tannins are abundant with a chalky blueberry coolness while a salty tang settles around the mouth. Lovely precision and purity of fruit; you feel the sharp definition - still linear which makes it less immediately charming than the 2019 but giving undeniable complexity. Deep but not heady, this remains pure and detailed, with a leanness from the terroir really setting this apart. After a few minutes, the glamour starts to appear giving a salivating, succulent and moreish aspect to the finish. An absolute beauty.

100 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Jan 2023)

A blend of 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Troplong Mondot is deep garnet-purple in color. It needs a swirl or two to release a profound nose of plum preserves, juicy blueberries, and chocolate-covered cherries, giving way to hints of violets, black truffles, fertile loam, and tar, with a waft of licorice. The full-bodied palate shimmers with energy, delivering tightly wound layers of black fruits, floral notes and mineral layers, framed by very fine-grained tannins and a lively backbone, finishing long and minerally. So very fresh and bright - it needs time, but is already a temptress.

98+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Mar 2023)

The 2020 Troplong Mondot is fabulous. Rich, dark and expansive, the 2020 is wonderfully exuberant right out of the gate. Black cherry, plum, gravel, incense and licorice are all dialed up. There's tremendous breadth and power, but without the excess weight of the past. Even so, the 2020 is a big, big wine that needs the better part of a decade to soften. All the classic Troplong structure is there, but buffered by vibrant acids and tons of supporting minerality. Harvest started on September 5 and finished on October 8, a very wide window for the Right Bank, and a reminder of how different the parcels are. The 2020 was done in 60% new oak, 12% foudres 28% once-used barrels.

98 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2023)

This firmly structured wine with its high percentage of Merlot is powerful and dense. The bold black fruits and perfumed density are impressive. It will age, ready to drink from 2028.

2020 Gran Enemigo Gualtallary (750ml)
Cabernet Franc from Mendoza, Argentina
B-21 Top Recommendation

"I found these firmly among Argentina's most exciting wines, cementing [Cabernet Franc's] rightful place alongside Malbec as a vehicle for expressing the Uco Valley." - Matthew Luczy, Wine Advocate

El Enemigo is easily one of the most exciting projects in South American wine over the past decade. The brainchild of Adrianna Catena and Alejandro Vigil (Catena's long-time winemaker) has racked up a dizzying array of huge scores and accolades over their relatively short time in the spotlight, and they're doing it at every point in the price spectrum and with outside-the-box offerings that only add to the singular appeal of the estate's range.

Case in point is this pair of back-to-back tete de cuvee masterpieces from their Gran Enemigo line of single-vineyard Cabernet Francs. Sure, Malbec may still be king in Argentina, but these wines redefining the luxury collectible category in Argentina in absolutely stunning fashion. There are four single-vineyard expressions in the Gran Enemigo category, but among them, Gualtallary is "the supreme example" according to Matthew Luczy, and the twin-titan, 99-point 2020 and 2021 show exactly why.

Both vintages showcase the wine's inimitable balance, which places it almost in a class of its own. The 2020 is "light on its feet and with great inner power" according to Luis Gutierrez of Wine Advocate. Regarding the 2021, Vinous' Eric Guido likewise muses, "Is it possible to create a wine with structure but without weight? The 2021 Cabernet Franc Gran Enemigo Gualtallary offers a remarkable answer to that apparent paradox." Gutierrez' Wine Advocate colleague Matthew Luczy notes its "incomparable finesse, depth and complexity" to further emphasize the 2021 as a singular achievement.

For any serious collector of the world's finest wines, this pair is a sure bet to add a whole new dimension to your cellar.

99WA

The 2020 Gran Enemigo Gualtallary Single Vineyard is nothing but phenomenal. It's very fresh and balanced and, for a warm year like 2020, doesn't show any heat or excess; it's subtle and has an ethereal character within the powerful and exuberant character from Gualtallary. It fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts and some full clusters, sometimes up to 70% of the volume. It's intense and powerful, but something makes if feel light on its feet and with great inner power. This is still young and should develop nicely in bottle and for a long time. 9,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2021 after maturing in large oak foudres for 15 months.
