2021 Caiarossa (750ml)
Cabernet Franc from Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

Located a few miles north of coastal Bolgheri in the Cecina River Valley, the Caiarossa estate boasts a hilly terrain covered with the brilliant red or "rossa" gravelly soil for which it is named, enjoying a steady rise in quality since its purchase in 2004 by Dutch businessman Eric Albada Jelgersma, also owner of Château du Tertre and Château Giscours in Margaux. Divided into distinct parcels and located at around 600 meters of altitude, Caiarossa's 31 hectares of vines are spread across three sites on the wooded 70 hectare estate, planted with eight different red varietals including Bordeaux grapes Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, Rhone's Syrah, Grenache (Alicante), and Mourvedre, and Tuscany's native Sangiovese, all farmed biodynamically.

This trio of acclaimed recent vintages shows why the estate is a true Tuscan insider's favorite, led by the stunning 96-point 2019, an artful, elegant Super Tuscan blend balancing fresh, layered dark fruit and refined, smooth tannins with powerful structure, showing "impressive depth and textural richness" according to Wine Advocate's Monica Larner. Antonio Galloni of Vinous calls the 2020 "the best wine I have tasted off this property in some time, perhaps ever" on his way to tagging it with an impressive 95 points. Finally, the epic 2021 Tuscany vintage is on full display with Caiarossa's flagship rendition. Larner remarks, "These results are balanced and bright in this gorgeous vintage, and I especially like the wine's freshness that seems to shine from its core" in her 95-point review, one among a bevy of glowing press across the board from every prominent voice in the critical sphere.

96JS 95WS 95JA 95D

Purplish tinge in the glass. Aromas of cloves, generous bramble fruit and dried eucalyptus. The attack is firm and dense, with a full body and velvety tannins of great extraction on the mid-palate and refreshing natural acidity. Good integration of oak at the end. Potential for the long haul, but drinkable in one to two years.

96 points, James Suckling (May 2024)

Dense and concentrated, this red is packed with black currant, blackberry and plum fruit, while iron, wild herb and oak spice notes add detail. Assertive tannins and vibrant acidity provide support, bringing a sense of equilibrium overall. There's fine depth to the dark fruit flavors, plus a terrific aftertaste that really persists. Shows power and grace. Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese, Petit Verdot and Grenache. Best from 2027 through 2045. 2,400 cases made, 800 cases imported.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Oct 2024)

This is a vintage that shows the successful evolution in this wine, with generous brambled raspberry, pomegranate, rosemary, underbrush, olive, anis, cocoa and grilled rosemary. There is intensity to the flavours, plenty of Tuscan sunshine, with excellent integration of the tannins, and a bounce of fresh acidities. Jerome Poisson as winemaker, AJ Domaines owner. Harvest September 2 to 21. Axel Marchal and Valerie Lavigne consultants. As an aside, I hesitated about the score. When tasted with the September Releases over the summer, I gave it 94 points, but in this vertical with other vintages of Caiarossa it came out at 95. It would be easy to drop the score down for consistency, but I am keeping it at 95, and will retaste after a few years in bottle to reassess. Held back for 12 months in bottle after ageing, 33% new oak.

95 points, Jane Anson (Sep 2024)

2021 was a demanding but ultimately rewarding vintage in much of Tuscany, with a warm March encouraging an early budbreak. The summer was hot and dry, with some welcome rain arriving in early September. Warm and sunny days returned for harvest. This is a wine with great potential but at this stage it is still quite closed. ‘We do very little racking to avoid oxygen during ageing,’ states general manager Jérôme Poisson. With time in the glass, fleshy black and blue fruit aromas and flavours emerge, along with hints of Mediterranean scrub. Velvety tannins keep a tight grip, while the fruit sapidity is underlined by a lovely vein of salinity and a ferrous twist. Long and poised, some savoury, earthy elements make themselves known on the finish. 30% Syrah, 20% Cabernet Franc, 16% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Sangiovese, 6% Petit Verdot, 2% Grenache, each vinified separately before blending and ageing for around 14 months in French oak barrels, 30% new.

Bollinger Brut Champagne Special Cuvee (750ml)
Sparkling from Champagne, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

There are Grandes Marques, "Mini-Marques," and then there are the TRULY grande marques. Bollinger is so grande (so important) that the most famous quotes on Champagne are attributed to its most endearing owner. Lily Bollinger was not only the most important character in the story of Bollinger, she remains its most charismatic.

The technical side of Bollinger – the unmatched level of investment in every bottle produced – is every bit as important as Lily's story. Stepping into the cellars of Bollinger will take your breath away. Imagine the greatest collection of Champagne you could ever hope to personally witness in one place. Imagine magnums of the most pristine, Grand Cru Champagne – bottled under cork – resting there before your eyes. How many bottles would it take for you to think, "Holy bubbles, Batman, that's a LOT of Champagne?"

In the cellars of Bollinger rests 600,000 magnums (100,000 cases) of Champagne reserves. It is this massive – truly mind-boggling – stash of reserves which contributes to the unmatched quality and consistency of the Bollinger Special Cuvée. The master blending performed which results in the richness, the depth and full body we love in Bollinger includes 50% of these reserve wines, some of which are up to 15 years of age. This Bollinger Special Cuvée you're buying today contains a healthy percentage of reserve wine from the vintage of 2000.

Moreover, in keeping with the historical Bollinger tradition and winemaking style – the style Lily championed across Europe – the Special Cuvée is vinified in seasoned oak barrels of varying size, shape and age. This barrel vinification is followed by another three years of aging on the fine lees, a process absolutely unmatched across the region. It's a time-consuming, laborious, expensive process that's driven by passion; as only Lily Bollinger would have had it.

Lily took over the estate upon her husband's passing in 1941 and is celebrated for greatly expanding the estate's vineyard holdings as well as the soaring popularity during her time as director and beyond. Recalling her arrival to London to declare her 1955 vintage, a reporter made public Lily Bollinger's reply when asked how much she enjoyed her own product. I think of it every day, or least every day I have a bottle of Bollinger:

"I drink my Champagne when I'm happy and when I'm sad. Sometimes I drink it when I'm alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I'm not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise I never touch it - unless I'm thirsty."
–Elizabeth "Lily" Law de Lauriston-Boubers Bollinger

One of the finest Bollinger Special Cuvée bottlings to date, with my price making it that much finer:

This focused Champagne shows lovely balance, with its satinlike mousse and well-honed acidity enmeshed with flavors of white cherry, pureed raspberry, toast point and creamed almond. Hints of spices and smoke play on the lingering finish. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Meunier. Drink now through 2029. 13,125 cases imported.

2022 Domaine Charvin Chateauneuf-du-Pape (750ml)
Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Domaine Charvin is a first-rate, under-the-radar favorite that routinely lands on the short lists of Châteauneuf insiders everywhere. The domaine's vineyard in the south of the appellation could produce a ripe, powerhouse style, but Laurent Charvin's methods make these wines some of the region's most elegant and refined, vintage after vintage.

"Laurent Charvin is, in an inexplicable way, one of the most underappreciated vignerons in Châteauneuf-du-Pape." - Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate

His Midas touch is amply evident in this stunning 2022 Châteauneuf that notched a whopping 98 points from James Suckling's Rhône critic, Stuart Pigott, who captures the style perfectly: "This astonishing Chateauneuf-du-Pape has the enormous aromatic complexity and subtlety that we expect from Grand Cru red Burgundies." Yohan Castaing likewise lauds it as "one of my favorites this year," going on to extol its "long and ethereal" finish and "delicate tannic frame."

Not only will hardcore Rhône fans go head over heels for the "sensuality, elegance, finesse and an ethereal character" of this beguiling red, but Burgundy fans and collectors can find much to love in a beautiful expression with tons of cross-over appeal.

98JS 96WA

This astonishing Chateauneuf-du-Pape has the enormous aromatic complexity and subtlety that we expect from Grand Cru red Burgundies. Enormous concentration and ample richness on the palate, and the structure behind this is no less impressive. Stacks of very fine tannins. The black and red berry fruit washes over you in a huge wave in the breathtaking licorice finish. So much drive and freshness. Enormous aging potential. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

98 points, Stuart Pigott, James Suckling (Apr 2025)

Another highlight this year, Charvin's 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape exhales a complex, floral bouquet of violet, rose petals, dark cherries, spices and menthol intertwined with delicate garrigue notes. Medium to full-bodied and fine-boned with a layered core of fruit, bright acids and velvety tannins, it finishes long and ethereal with a delicate tannic frame thanks to whole bunches. This blend of 80% Grenache, 7% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre and the rest of Vaccarèse and Counoise is one of my favorites this year.

2022 Julien Brocard Montee de Tonnerre 1er Cru (750ml)
Chardonnay from Chablis, Burgundy, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

We're always on the look-out for under-the-radar Chablis stars to introduce to our avid Burgundy clientele, and this 1er Cru Montée de Tonnerre is a perfect introduction to a domaine that should be on everyone's short list. When he's not overseeing the extensive domaine and négociant arms of the vast Jean-Marc Brocard estate, Julien Brocard devotes his spare time to turning out fabulous wines of true terroir distinction under his own eponymous label. The entire range is a tour de force in biodynamic winemaking, the trio on offer today exemplifying Brocard's meticulous precision and commitment to authentic terroir expression.

Leading off, we have a "very terroir-driven ... very promising" Côte de Léchet 1er Cru that notched 92+ points from Neal Martin of Vinous, followed by a potential 96-point Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru that Decanter calls "a fine balance between the power and minerality of Montée de Tonnerre and the ripeness of this particular site." Chablis fans and collectors on the hunt for a thrilling discovery to follow over the coming years should take a serious look at Julien Brocard, especially at our unbeatable market-leading pricing across the board.

94D 93V

A very fine example of Montée de Tonnerre. Ripeness of fruit combined with vibrant acidity, it's a fine balance between the power and minerality of Montée de Tonnerre and the ripeness of this particular site. A high-quality introduction to the benefits of biodynamic winemaking.

94 points, Andy Howard, Decanter (Oct 2023)

The 2022 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre 1er Cru has a backward nose that demands time to open, revealing subtle scents of beeswax and granite with time. The palate has a very harmonious entry with notes of Clementine and peach. Vibrant and poised with a persistent finish. One of my picks from the domaine this years.

2022 Chateau des Rontets Pouilly-Fuisse Pierrefolle (750ml)
Chardonnay from Maconnais, Burgundy, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Our November visit to Burgundy was a game-changer on so many levels, as we discovered several unbelievable finds at virtually every tier of the quality hierarchy, but nothing quite compared these truly stunning, old-vine gems from a Pouilly-Fuissé domaine that belongs on everyone's radar.

"A wine of real stature and distinction, the 2022 Les Birbettes is simply magnificent ... it's arguably the most compelling wine of our November trip to Burgundy."

- Andrew Kitz, B-21 Burgundy Buyer

Fabio Montrasi's Château des Rontets is one of the great hidden gems in the Mâcon, and since all of his vineyards are monopoles, the domaine's wines are undeniably distinctive in their terroir signatures. As Neal Martin of Vinous notes, "Despite not farming any Premier Cru, these wines are amongst the best in Mâconnais. All three of Montrasi's cuvées are worth seeking out." Why no premier cru, you might ask? A mere technicality, as the domaine sits just above the elevation line that defines the appellation's premiers crus. Nonetheless, these are some of the most impeccable sites in the region led by Les Birbettes, a one-hectare, hilltop parcel of 100-year-old vines on pure limestone that produces one of the most singular expressions in the entire Mâconnais. "The definition of a thoroughbred Chardonnay" as our Burgundy Buyer Andrew Kitz describes it, the 2022 Les Birbettes has the pedigree and substance to stand toe-to-toe with the elite of the Côte de Beaune, and rest assured, if it were from Puligny or Chassagne, you'd be looking at a price tag well into the triple digits.

"The most unique Chardonnay we discovered on our November trip to Burgundy ... this is just a singular expression any way you slice it." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Burgundy Buyer

Offering a fascinating juxtaposition to the domaine's old-vine 2022 Les Birbettes, the 2022 Pierrefolle hails from another inimitable monopole site in winemaker Fabio Montrasi's stable. The slightly warmer micro-climate in this half-hectare parcel of 50-year-old vines is tempered by a feature almost unheard-of in Burgundy - granite soils. Yes, you read that correctly. This anomaly of a vineyard allows Montrasi to craft a Chardonnay expression unlike any you'll find in the region, as the vineyard's soils impart their unmistakeable imprint on the finished wine. Layers of latent complexity are wound tightly upon the firm structural foundation, resulting in that true "wine of place" character that all Burgundy aficionados covet. Indeed, as B-21 Burgundy Buyer Andrew Kitz puts it, "This wine is terroir in a nutshell." As with its stablemate, the 2022 Les Birbettes, the 2022 Château des Rontets Pierrefolle is a razor-sharp buy for savvy collectors seeking white Burgundies of purity and clarity that far outpace their price points.

94AK 93BH 92V

The most unique Chardonnay we discovered on our November trip to Burgundy (alongside Bongran’s 2017 Cuvée Levroutée Viré-Clessé), this is just a singular expression any way you slice it. Chardonnay grown in a high-elevation, half-hectare plot of granite – it all starts there. It’s undeniably a wine of place, as the granite soils come through in its strident minerality, gripping tension, and high-toned poise. The aromatics show clear soil signature, finally giving up crisp white flowers and bracing citrus, with much held in reserve. The fruit is more apparent on the palate, but with no less of a mineral streak than on the nose. As you’d expect, laser-focused acidity lends it serious aging potential. It’s nowhere near it’s full expression now, but it’s clearly evident this will blossom into something superb in due time. Simply put, there was nothing else like it on this trip. This wine is terroir in a nutshell.

94 points, Andrew Kitz, B-21 Burgundy Buyer (Jan 2025)

The medium-bodied flavors possess outstanding intensity and delineation is perhaps not quite the same density before terminating in a balanced, long and more complex finale. This is equally lovely and should age similarly. Worth checking out. *Outstanding*

90-93 points, Allen Meadows, Burghound

The 2022 Pouilly-Fuissé Pierrefolle is unusual in that it comes from more granitic soils (à la Beaujolais) and a slightly warmer microclimate. That comes through on a slightly more mineral-driven nose, quite "airy" in style, citrus peel and light linden scents coming through with aeration. The palate is taut and fresh, impressive concentration and heightened acidity that lends real "cut" on the finish. Excellent.

2020 Felsina Fontalloro (750ml)
Sangiovese from Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

We lead off with a pair of new 2022s that highlight the reference-point quality found at every level in the Felsina range. "The 2022 Chianti Classico Berardenga is superb. Rich and deep yet also quite translucent, the 2022 is an archetype of Castelnuovo Berardenga," writes Antonio Galloni, and it comes in at an easy case-buy price that makes it a perfect candidate for your next go-to house red. Likewise, the 2023 I Sistri Chardonnay shows the broad range of Felsina's repertoire, a "deep, intense and characterful" Chardonnay expression that impressed James Suckling to the tune of 93 points.

The 2021 Berardenga Riserva is quite possibly the star of the show, garnering an eye-opening press across the board led by a pair of 95 point reviews fromWine Spectator and Italian wine authority Kerin O'Keefe, who found it "elegant and showing wonderful intensity." James Suckling calls the 2021 "a well-composed, balanced and refined riserva," while Antonio Galloni declares, "A wine of nuance and layers, the 2021 has so much to offer."

With all the hype surrounding 2021, savvy Italian fans can find some truly superb buys in the 2020 vintage as well, not least of which is the 2020 Fontalloro Toscana. With same universal praise as the rest of Fèlsina's line, led by 96 points from Wine Advocate's Monica Larner, the 2020 is "a vibrant red ...On the elegant side, despite its youthful power, with excellent harmony" according to Wine Spectator.

Finally, for savvy dessert wine fans, the Vin Santo category is a hotbed of impressive offerings that showcase singular style and character, and there are few, if any, Vin Santos that surpass that of the inimitable Felsina for quintessential character and class. "The 2017 Vin Santo del Chianti Classico is rich, layered, and wonderfully complete," declares Galloni. We just sourced a parcel of the recently released, 96-point 2017 at a remarkable price, so fans can stock up, and anyone curious about this beloved style of wine can get a world-class introduction without breaking the bank.

This set from Fèlsina offers a multifaceted tour of classic Tuscan character. In short, everything that makes Fèlsina such a treasured estate is on full display in today's offer.

96WA 95WS 95JS 94V

Made with a special selection of Sangiovese, the 2020 Fontalloro is generous and rich, and the wine sports medium-dark color and concentration. The winemaking team has succeeded in bringing out an especially elegant side to this vintage. The wine offers pronounced notes of cherry and wild plum with delicate spice at the back. Like the other wines in this portfolio, there is a pretty mineral note that makes for a consistent through-line in all these new releases.

96 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (May 2023)

A vibrant red, with fleeting aromas of lavender and wild rosemary mingling with cherry, orange peel, earth, mineral and tobacco flavors. On the elegant side, despite its youthful power, with excellent harmony, refined tannins and a long, complex aftertaste. Sangiovese. Best from 2026 through 2045. 3,800 cases made, 1,200 cases imported.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Oct 2023)

Very refined and complex nose with a hint of pine cones, botanicals and dark mushrooms to the zesty oranges, mineral, fine musk and plums. Juicy, dry but textured on the palate with stacks of dusty tannins growing on the savory, full-bodied palate. Long and quite mineral in the finish. Better from 2025.

95 points, Zekun Shuai, James Suckling (Sep 2023)

The 2020 Fontalloro is a sensual, enveloping wine. Dark red-toned fruit, sweet spice, tobacco, cedar and mint are all beautifully delineated. Fontalloro is a pure Sangiovese from vineyards that straddle the Chianti Classico and Colli Senesi appellations. The duality is very much on display here.

Meikle Toir The Sherry One 5yr Single Malt Scotch (700ml)
From Speyside, Scotland
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"I'll say it straight away – this is more complex and composed than any five-year-old single malt should be." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

Fans of Speyside know the name Billy Walker, so they'll no doubt take notice at this new passion project from the master distiller at Glenallachie. Walker started Meikle Toir (Gaelic for Our Pursuit) to showcase Speyside malt in the peated style, something rarely found in this region and a complete departure from the well-known unpeated style at Glenallachie. For this range, Walker applies the utmost precision in his use of the peat and exercises some brilliant creative impulses in his aging regimens.

The Sherry One is, as you'd expect, quite a sherry bomb in the all the best ways. As B-21 Spirits Buyer Andrew Kitz notes, "The master of sherried Speyside malt nails it here in his expert application of the PX and Oloroso casks." We weren't the only ones impressed with this "gem of a whisky" as described in Whisky Advocate's 93-point review. As the market for aged Scotch is still running hot, savvy collectors and aficionados are looking to younger, overachieving stunners like The Sherry One to fill the gap, especially when they're made in world-class fashion by a living Scotch legend.

94AK 93WHA

First thing you might notice here is the age statement, so I’ll say it straight away – this is more complex and composed than any five-year-old single malt should be. Crafted at Glenallachie by legendary distiller Billy Walker, the entire Meikle Toir range is top flight, but The Sherry One is a cut above the rest. The master of peated Speyside malt nails it here in his expert application of the PX and Oloroso casks. Take a moment with the stunning orange/amber color, then dive into the dark, well-defined nose of rich cocoa dust, chocolate pudding, Aleppo pepper, spicy jerky, and spiced orange peel. Treacle, coconut, crème brulée, and subtle peat smoke all make an appearance too. The palate is just as head-turning with a dark fruit character that’s absent from the nose – blackberry, plum, and blueberry – followed by dense Oloroso tones. Burnt sugar, café mocha, toasted pistachio, and that same persistent dark fruit core all the way through. Incredibly opulent yet balanced, the finish is all intensity, drawn out into a long, slow-burning finale.

94 points, Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer (Dec 2024)

Chocolate brownie, smoked orange disc, ground cumin, mild smoked paprika, gentle peat smoke, and a dusting of cocoa on the nose of this gem of a whisky matured in Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry puncheons. On the palate, dark chocolate slides in with smoke, blackberry, burnt sugar, treacle, espresso, maple-coated pecans, and sizzling spices. Melted chocolate, peat smoke, plum skins, and baked orange on the finish.

Central Otago's Rippon is unequivocally a "grand cru" New Zealand estate by any measure, even aesthetic, as it's arguably the most beautiful wine estate in the world, situated on the shores of the iconic Lake Wanaka with the South Island's Alps as a jaw-dropping backdrop.A family run estate since their founding, the Rippon Pinot Noirs represente the very top echelon of the country's offerings in that category and set the bar vintage after vintage for the cream of Central Otago's crop.

Our first allocation of the newly released 2021s has just landed, and it's safe to say that these are once again world-class offerings with stratospheric critical accolades that can compete with virtually any Pinot Noir in the world, from Burgundy, Sonoma, or anywhere else. Leading off, the flagship 2021 Mature Vines boasts 97 points from James Suckling, while it's a "gorgeous" offering that "expounds mineral freshness and detail in spades" according to Wine Advocate's Erin Larkin. Taking the estate profile to another level of nuance and detail, the single-block bottlings, always highly acclaimed and highly limited, are collectible stunners of the first order. The WA98 Tinker's Field "is a wine of impact and tremendous grace," while the JS97 Emma's Block is "mineral, detailed, and quietly spoken," each wine offering a distinct side of the Rippon estate's personality.

For any collector of reference-point, singular Pinot Noirs, Rippon belongs on your short list. If you haven't yet discovered them, do yourself a favor and make some room in the cellar next to your other trophy bottlings, as these mesmerizing gems will cruise in dynamic fashion with the best of the best.

Lovely ripe berries and strawberries with some juicy fruit and forest flower aromas that follow through to a full body with layers of fruit and fine tannins that spread across the palate. Oyster shell and granite-like undertones. Warm fruit character yet cool in the mouth. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification. Drink after 2025, but already beautiful.

97 points, James Suckling (Oct 2023)

The 2021 Rippon Mature Vine Pinot Noir is a representation of the flavor of the estate. The wine spends two winters in barrel and two in bottle prior to release, and as usual, the wine here today expounds mineral freshness and detail in spades. On the palate, the tannins set in in a manner akin to wet chalk. They are silty and fine and tend to settle on the palate and linger long through the finish. I love this wine: the detail and freshness of it and the flavors of pomegranate, crushed shells, raspberry seed and white tea. Yields were very low, and it was a difficult year in terms of the logistical challenges thanks to COVID-19. "I kept it simple this year; there was so much going on in our lives at that time," says Nick Mills. Vines were planted from 1982 to 2000, mostly unirrigated (aside from new vines) and on own roots, and no adjustments were made to the must. This is gorgeous. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

"The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville is straight-up fabulous..." - Jeb Dunnuck

No name in California wine history is as synonymous with Napa Cabernet as Robert Mondavi. Sourced from this revered estate's iconic To Kalon vineyard, an undisputed California "grand cru," the 2021 The Estates Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon makes the most of its pedigree and this acclaimed Napa vintage. A bevy of glowing praise, including 95 points from Decanter and 94 points each from Antonio Galloni and Jeb Dunnuck, confirms the wine's place as yet another benchmark expression of the valley's most famous AVA. "A wine of gravitas and power, the 2021 has a lot to offer," notes Galloni, who goes on to praise "a new level of energy and vibrancy in the Mondavi wines that is compelling." Rather than rest on their laurels, the team at Mondavi have redoubled their efforts to keep turning out stunning renditions such as this, and fans of expertly crafted Napa Valley Cabernet can add it to their cellars at a remarkable, sub-$60 price that's handily beats the rest of the market.

What an easy-drinking 2021 Cabernet from this legendary Napa producer. It's a beautifully classic wine with intensely aromatic, flavour-packed fruit redolent of blueberry, black cherry, and black raspberry, tinged with smoky cedarwood. The full-bodied palate is marked by persistent tannins and a satisfying finish revealing notes of earth, river stones, dried herbs, and a firm spine of acidity—a wine to enjoy throughout a great meal. Nearly half the fruit is sourced from Oakville, with additional grapes from Stags Leap District, Oak Knoll, Yountville, and Rutherford. A blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec, aged 18 months in French oak barrels.

95 points, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter (Sep 2024)

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville is straight-up fabulous, with pure cassis and darker blue-tinged fruit as well as notes of graphite, tobacco leaf, and spicy wood. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, gorgeously layered, elegant Cabernet Sauvignon with fine tannins and just a kiss of background oak. There are roughly 11,000 cases, so it shouldn't be too hard to find in the market, and it's going to drink well for at least 10-15 years.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2023)

Intense blackberries and black cherries on the nose lead to vivid focused cherries, blueberries and minty, spicy accents on the palate. Firm in tannins and fresh with good acidity, this outstanding wine is well-balanced. Enjoyable now but best from 2027.

94 points, James Suckling (Mar 2024)

An extroverted style, with a burst of mint and boysenberry notes leading off, followed by steeped plum and black currant preserve flavors. There's a nice graphite note running underneath the fruit before this ends with a licorice accent that rounds off the finish. Drink now through 2038. 900 cases made.

Ripe and structured but fresh in feel, with a lovely, pure beam of cassis driving through, supported by mouthwatering apple wood, savory and iron details along the way. #75 - Wine Spectator Top 100 of 2024

Cassis and blueberries, dark chocolate and spiced cocoa are carried on a framework of durable tannins into a persistent finish. This wine will do well with decanting to help open up its flavors, or can be held in cellar for several more years. Drink 2028–2038.

94 points, Elaine Chukan Brown, Wine Enthusiast (Jul 2024)

Ripe blackberries and blueberries with notes of chocolate, vanilla and wet stones. Medium- to full-bodied, polished and smooth, with fine tannins and a lingering finish. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Coeur de Vigne Cabernet Sauvignon, with 14% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot in the blend and aged in 60% new French oak, is deep garnet-purple in color. It swans out of the glass with showy scents of creme de cassis, wild blueberries, and Morello cherries followed by hints of violets, menthol, and crushed rocks. 2022 Chateau des Rontets Pouilly-Fuisse Les Birbettes (750ml)

96AK 93V 93BH

A wine of real stature and distinction, the 2022 Les Birbettes is simply magnificent. Sourced from a single hectare of 100-year-old vines on limestone soils that should by all rights be a premier cru (but for it’s high elevation), this is the definition of a thoroughbred Chardonnay. Mesmerizing aromatics range from pristine minerality to head-turning floral tones to ripe tree fruits, all delivered with pitch-perfect intensity. The palate is pure drive and energy, impeccably harmonious from start to finish. Oyster shell, citrus oil, and baked pear weave seamlessly across a sculpted foundation of firm acidity and shimmering texture, the barrel fermentation giving it an additional layer of weight and viscosity. It’s certainly a singular Pouilly-Fuissé that ranks with the appellation’s best, and it’s arguably the most compelling wine of our November trip to Burgundy.

96 points, Andrew Kitz, B-21 Burgundy Buyer (Jan 2025)

The 2022 Pouilly-Fuissé Les Birbettes contains parcels of vine from before the war and half a hectare planted after phylloxera. It has another enticing bouquet, quite complex and minerally, light oyster shell scents and a light touch of mint. The palate is well balanced with a keen line of acidity, fresh and taut, commendable depth with a slightly viscous finish. This is superb.

93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Aug 2024)

Once again the nose is dominated by reductive and wood notes. As is usually the case, there is a bit more size, weight and power to the broad-shouldered flavors that possess fine mid-palate density while displaying excellent length on the sappy and youthfully austere finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This wine seemingly always ages exceptionally well and the 2022 version should be no exception. *Outstanding*

2022 Antinori Cervaro della Sala (750ml)
Chardonnay from Umbria, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Twenty-six generations of the Antinori family have built upon a family dynasty dating to 1385 when Antinori's ancestors joined the Florentine Guild of Vintners. Having developed estates in Tuscany's finest and most progressive viticultural areas of Montalcino, Chianti Classico and Montepulciano, they turned their sights to Umbria, and the 14th century Castello della Sala in the city of Orvieto. Originally owned by one of the most powerful, noble families of Orvieto, the Monaldeschi – feudatories of Charlemagne, King of the Franks – the Castello della Sala represents the ancient history of Umbria, passing through multiple noble families until being acquired by the Antinori family in 1940.

Fast-forward to 1979, Renzo Cotarella arrived, and, in less than ten years, created the wines which would come to symbolize this historic estate. A famous, professional agronomist, Cotarella launched an ambitious project of varietal substitution; a program aimed at producing white wines of greater personality than those produced in the Orvieto Classico appellation at the time. Chardonnay would become the backbone of Cotarella's new masterpiece, with the local Grechetto grape utilized (10-15%) for balancing acidity.

Cervaro della Sala stands as a benchmark today; a wine which resonates so forcefully within its category that it has become emblematic of the category itself.

Attractive nose of ripe mangoes, pineapple and grilled lemons with some toasty, nutty notes and hints of smoky minerality. Cardamom and pie crust, too. It’s full-bodied, nervy and juicy, with bright acidity and savory nuances. It’s layered and long and it builds up on the palate, with vibrant, spicy notes of candied ginger, dried lemons and bitter citrus peel. Truly the Montrachet of Italy. Drink or hold.

2020 Caparzo Brunello di Montalcino La Casa (750ml)
Sangiovese from Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

B-21 Brunello mainstay Caparzo has experienced a stellar ascent under the ownership of Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini since 1998, and they're arguably producing their best wines ever. At least, that's our take from this trio of fantastic new releases from winemaker Massimo Bracalente.

The 2020 vintage's best wines strike a remarkable balance that defies the warm growing conditions, and Caparzo nails that sweet spot perfectly with this 95-point normale bottling. "This is really pretty ... Creamy and so polished. It goes on for minutes. A graceful and complex 2020 Brunello," notes James Suckling, hinting at one of the vintage's finest virtues, its approachability in the near term. While some 2020s are indeed blockbusters of huge structure and ripeness, they lack the graceful balance that defines the best Brunellos, but fans of the world's best Sangioveses can rest assured that all the varietal's most striking and important features can be found in spades in this stunning expression of "ample energy and dimension."

The most prized parcel on the estate is the old-vine plot next to the historic Tuscan farmhouse, appropriatey called Vigna La Casa, from which comes the La Casa bottling, a sterling terroir expression that always takes the estate's signature style to the next level. "A real charmer with ripe tannins, even, seamless acidity, and a great finish," notes Jeb Dunnuck's Italy critic Audrey Frick in her 96-point review. The 2020 La Casa boasts "otherworldly" balance per Vinous' Eric Guido, and James Suckling even floats the proposition that it could outpace the prodigious 2019 vintage.

Finally, the 2019 Brunello Riserva releases are finally hitting the market, and they're delivering on all the promise and hype the vintage has received since the reviews started coming out. As good as the 2019 normale and La Casa wines were from Caparzo, we knew the Riserva would be a knock-out, and it's here and ready to prove us correct. "The Caparzo 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva makes a terrific first impression thanks to the intensity of its dark fruit aromas and its well-integrated spice. This is a full-bodied wine with deep layers of richness and velvety tannins," writes Monica Larner for Wine Advocate. This is a classically styled Brunello that will cruise in the cellar thanks to its "dramatic length and structure," as Vinous' Eric Guido describes it, shining right alongside previous best-selling, benchmark vintages like 2015 and 2016.

97JS 95WS 95WI

This is really pretty, with cherry, peach, and orange-peel character. It’s medium-bodied with very fine tannins and a long, long finish. Creamy and so polished. It goes on for minutes. A graceful and complex 2020 Brunello. Is this better than the 2019? Drink after 2027, but already beautiful to taste.

97 points, James Suckling (Sep 2024)

Though compact and tightly knit, this red delivers a beam of strawberry, raspberry, mineral and spice flavors, and there's a hint of milk chocolate as this plays out on the finish. Offers beautiful balance and a resonant aftertaste. Best from 2028 through 2046. 1,666 cases made, 416 cases imported.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Mar 2025)

Quite pale in color, the 2020 Casa has appealing aromatic notes of strawberry jam, white chocolate, fresh rose petal, and underbrush. Quite enjoyable now, it offers medium concentration, supple tannins, and a sweeping fresh acidity that lifts the finish.

Set among exquisite gardens designed by the creator of the Sun King's grounds at the Palace of Versailles, the majestic two-story turret-flanked Chateau Suduiraut is one of Bordeaux's most beautiful estates, located just to the north of Chateau d'Yquem with 92 hectares of sloping organically farmed vineyards planted with mostly Semillon vines averaging 30 years of age. After harvesting the botrytized grapes over multiple passes with strict selection employed in the vineyard, longtime technical director Pierre Montegut vinified the Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes in French oak, blending mostly Semillon with small amounts of Sauvignon Blanc, then aged it on the lees in 50% new French oak barrels for 18-24 months, yielding its signature perfumed aromas with rich and decadent spiced fruit, balanced with energetic acidity and epic length. Describing it as "a mood altering wine," the 95 pt. 2004 Suduiraut boasts "a range of honeyed flavors that never seems to stop" according to Wine and Spirits, while the Wine Advocate's Robert Parker Jr. declares the 95 pt. 2006 Suduiraut "unctuously textured, with superb, full-bodied richness, good underlying acidity, and a stunning finish." Boasting "a beautiful razor-sharp line of acidity that effortlessly slices through all that pure botrytised fruit," Neal Martin of Vinous calls the 98 pt. 2009 Suduiraut a "benchmark Suduiraut" and declares the 96 pt. 2010 Chateau Suduiraut "simply magnificent" and "a candidate for best Sauternes of the vintage." Vinous critic Antonio Galloni declares the "fabulous" 97 pt. 2016 Suduiraut "such a gorgeous wine," delivering a remarkable combination of flavor and intensity yet remaining "gracious and classy," while the Wine Enthusiast's Roger Voss calls it "a great wine with a long-term future."

Whether selecting a few favorites or mixing a case, these magical vintages of Chateau Suduiraut are crafted to reveal their layered complexity over the next decades, their rich palate deftly balanced by an energizing lift of acidity, guaranteeing a pleasurable evolution for years to come. Christian Seely, AXA's charismatic managing director behind Chateau Suduiraut, describes tasting these elegantly crafted Sauternes well: "It is above all a supremely pleasurable wine, and one that needs no excuse, context or pairing: You can just open it for the sheer pleasure of the thing." Never more true at these exceptional bargain prices.

What a wine for the vintage, with spices and furniture wax undertones, then dried citrus fruit. Great intensity in this, powerful stuff. Perhaps the best 2005.

97 points, James Suckling (Apr 2012)

Bright gold. Perfectly balanced. Not sweet, and yet explosively sweet with flavors of fresh nectarine, scents of jasmine and honeysuckle. The sweetness pours out of the freshness, so it's impossible to taste them apart. The flavors last, perhaps because it's the kind of wine you'll want to roll around in your mouth over and over. Glorious.

96 points, Wine & Spirits (Oct 2008)

The 2005 Suduiraut resulted from five different pickings. Everything was easy in the vineyard, but the wine struggled to ferment because of its richness. Pale to medium lemon-gold in color, it has a fabulously complex nose of creme caramel, praline, apricot preserves, and apple pie with hints of candied ginger and fallen leaves. Full-bodied and yet wonderfully refreshing, it has loads of savory and stone fruit layers, finishing long and nutty.

94 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Nov 2024)

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva opens with a mentholated freshness, blending crushed rocks and mint with hints of tobacco, flowery underbrush and dried black cherries. Silken and serene, this displays notable weight and concentration while maintaining freshness. Waves of texturally ripe wild berry fruits. and fine-grained tannins cake the senses. The 2019 finishes with dramatic length and structure, leaving a tinge of licorice to linger on.

94 points, Eric Guido, Vinous (Nov 2024)

This is lively, displaying fresh cherry, blackberry, plum, black pepper, earth and menthol flavors. Ripe, dense and lifted by formidable tannins. All of the components seem to be in the right place as this finds its equilibrium on the lingering finish. Best from 2027 through 2043. 1,250 cases made, 200 cases imported.

94 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Mar 2025)

Dark berry compote on the nose, the 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva offers notes of wild fresh herbs, clove, and a touch of balsamic. The palate shows herbal freshness and a taut acidity, slightly rustic crunchy tannins, and a medium-long savory finish. No need to wait as this wine is drinking with pleasurable forwardness.

94 points, Vanessa Conlin, Wine Independent (Dec 2024)

Made since 1980, Caparzo’s Riserva is selected at harvest by consulting oenologist team, Paolo and Jacopo Vagaggini. It ages primarily in large Slavonian oak casks with a short passage in French oak tonneaux of 750 litres. Still youthfully restrained, the nose flirts with cedar, leather and heather, then the palate changes gear with its overtly powerful drive of substantial yet sophisticated chalky tannins and brisk acidity. By comparison, subtle flavours of wet stone and polished red cherry seem polite and tame for the time being. This will need time to develop into its full expression.

2021 Vajra Barolo Coste di Rose (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"Stylistically, the Vajra Barolos embody all the virtues of modern classicism. The wines are elegant, silky, polished and an absolute delight to drink." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

You know the name, and perhaps you already know that the 2021 vintage in Barolo is one for the books, so let's jump right into this set of stunning new releases from "one of the leading estates in Piedmont."

As any astute Barolo collector knows, a great vintage is marked not only by the heights that the top wines reach, but by the overall quality of the entry-level offerings, and Vajra's flagship Albe bottling knocks it out of the park in 2021. Wine Advocate's Monica Larner tagged it with 95 points and called it "an enormously versatile expression of Nebbiolo, with an affordable price, that offers more value for your money than most Barolos out there," with several other critics chiming in with their own glowing praise for a serious sub-$40 contender.

Movnig to the single crus, Vajra's enviable stable is a star-studded affiair in this benchmark campaign, led by a pair of 98-point collectible treasures in the Ravera and Bricco della Viole, the latter "a wine of stature and breeding" showcasing "little details [that] emerge with terrific sharpness in an epic vintage such as 2021." Of course, we shouldn't overlook the 96-point Coste di Rose. "Loaded with finesse" per Kerin O'Keefe, "[it's] already tempting, [but] the best is yet to come."

It's safe to say this is one of the must-have ranges in 2021 Barolo, so collectors should make room in the cellar and cast a wide net on these guaranteed long-haul trophies.

The G.D. Vajra 2021 Barolo Coste di Rose (a certified organic wine) is especially fragrant and floral in this vintage. It could be the power of suggestion given the wine's name ("slope of roses"), but you absolutely get hints of heritage rose or rose hip in this beautiful Nebbiolo. The 2021 vintage hits the ball out of the park. There are characteristic hints of tar and something that reminds me of oil paints or linseed oil. I love the clarity of the mouthfeel.

96 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jan 2025)

What an intoxicating nose of flowers like violets and roses and hints of cedar and blueberries. The palate is compact, with delineated fruit and superfine, elegant tannins. Succulent, but with a lovely, polished, underlying structure. Already a joy to drink, but will surely improve substantially with a couple of years of bottle age.

96 points, Jacobo Garcia-Andrade Llamas, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

Loaded with finesse, the 2021 Coste di Rose has classic Barolo aromas of wild red berry, rose petal, camphor and spice. It’s smooth and delicious, doling out wild raspberry, strawberry compote, star anise and black tea before a minty finish. Polished tannins and fresh acidity keep it impeccably balanced. While already tempting, the best is yet to come.

96 points, Kerin O'Keefe (Jan 2025)

Pouring a medium ruby color, the 2021 Barolo Coste Di Rose has very pretty spice as well as aromas of cocoa, fresh flowers, toasted incense, and pomegranate, The palate offers nervous energy that will take time to tame, but it boasts fantastic focus and electric energy, with mouthwatering salinity upfront, well-defined tannins, refreshing acidity, and a long, floating finish. This will easily last 20-25 years if stored in cool cellars. While under production, it underwent extended skin contact for 54 days, followed by 26 months of aging in casks.

95+ points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2025)

Bright cherry, strawberry, rose, menthol and iron flavors weave throughout this elegant, intense red. Picks up accents of licorice and tar while winding down on the complex, focused aftertaste. Best from 2028 through 2047.

Ardnamurchan Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky
From Ardnamurchan, Highlands, Scotland
B-21 Top Recommendation

"I really can't overstate how impressed I am with this distillery." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

Established in 2014, Ardnamurchan is relatively new in the Highland scene, but they've got their feet fully under them, and they've been the talk to the town in Scotch circles for a few years now. The commitment to world-class quality is evident in everything from the distillery's facilities to their production, aging, and blending, resulting in a number of awards and recognitions in several recent industry publications and competitions.

Working with artfully crafted distillate in both peated and unpeated form, these are some of the most compelling new Highland malts to hit the market in some time. We first highlighted this rising star distillery a few weeks ago with their flat-out stupendous Sherry Cask release, and now we're back with the equally prodigious Cask Strength Single Malt. Made with all the same precise craftsmanship yet distinctly different in style than the Sherry Cask, this one of the more refined and poised peated expressions we've come across in a long while. Aged almost entirely in ex-bourbon cask, it's 87% peated and 13% unpeated malt, offering all the requisite smokey personality to satisfy fans of Ardbeg, Laphroiag, and the other iconic peated style, all while maintaining a poised and restrained character that can appeal even to the Scotch novice.

"The smoky quality is incredibly refined on the nose. It's there in spades, but it's no smoke bomb," notes B-21 Spirits Buyer Andrew Kitz, while "the rich, round texture is shockingly gentle for a cask strength bottling." Wonderfully complex yet eminently approachable, the Cask Strength demonstrates the quintessential character of a distillery that should be on every single malt lover's radar.

93AK

This relative newcomer to the Highland scene is making waves with some seriously impressive expressions that showcase top-quality juice and a truly imaginative blending team. For a core item, the Cask Strength Single Malt still sees pretty limited production, with just 2,400 bottles making it to the U.S. market. Markedly different than the Sherry Cask bottling, this is composed of 87% peated malt and aged almost entirely in ex-bourbon barrels, with a small percentage done in sherry cask. For a whisky with such a high proportion of peated malt, the smoky quality is incredibly refined on the nose. It’s there in spades, but it’s no smoke bomb. Beautifully layered notes of green orchard fruit, golden raisin, and cobbler come to the fore, but some aggressive aeration brings out tons of added nuance like petrol, toasted cereals, warm biscuit crust, toffee undertones, chocolate-covered raisins, citrus confit, and chocolate chip cookie dough. The palate, much like the nose, shows the distillery’s penchant for refinement and precision. The rich, round texture is shockingly gentle for a cask strength bottling so you can go at this right away with no water. Toned down on the fruit, the flavors instead center on toasted cereals and ultrafine peat in the form of smoldering embers and gunpowder. The whisky’s remarkable balance is underscored by dried herbs, charred citrus peel, smoky minerality on the long, persistent finish. I really can’t overstate how impressed I am with this distillery. If the core items are this good, I can’t wait to see what’s in store as their stocks mature and they start turning out more limited expressions.

Crafted in a Burgundian style expressing "purity, minerality and depth of fruit" according to Eric Guido of Vinous, these top scoring 2022 selections from cult favorite Willamette Valley winery Walter Scott are not to be missed by fans of Oregon Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, a range of exceptional 2022's declared "wildly successful" by critic Guido and all boasting complexity built for a decade or more of evolution.

Founded by Erica Landon and Ken Pahlow in the Eola-Amity Hills, Walter Scott was named to honor Ken's late grandfather and nephew, producing its first vintage in 2009 at Patricia Green Cellars and moving the operation over to Evening Land Vineyards where Ken went to work in sales and in the cellar under the tutelage of Dominique Lafon. Now produced in a small winery leased from the Casteel family of Bethel Heights Winery, Walter Scott continues "to raise the bar across their portfolio" according to Jeb Dunnuck critic Audrey Frick, "producing exceptional wines with purity and balance" and sourcing their wines from some of region's top Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards. Produced from four vineyards in the Eola-Amity Hills, the bright 94 pt. 2022 Walter Scott La Combe Verte Pinot Noir offers pure, earthy fruit "back by juicy acidity and silky tannins" according to the Wine Enthusiast's Michael Alberty, calling the entry level offering a "great buy." A cellar selection bridging the gap between the La Combe Verte and the single vineyard cuvees, the fresh and vibrant 94 pt. 2022 Walter Scott Cuvee Ruth Pinot Noir boasts "ripe wild berry fruits and juicy acidity" according to Eric Guido of Vinous, describing it as "wonderfully complex and refined, making it a fantastic value." From the iconic vineyard located in the new Mount Pisgah Polk County AVA, the dark fruited and intense 97 pt. 2022 Walter Scott Freedom Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir is "silky and fresh" according to the Wine Advocate's Erin Brooks with rich, velvety tannins on a palate that's "seamless yet powerful." Boasting "masses of ripe orchard fruits and salty minerals," Eric Guido of Vinous calls the 95 pt. 2022 Walter Scott Justice Vineyard Chardonnay "a beast of a wine" boasting a silky texture and substantial depth. The elegant 94 pt. 2022 Walter Scott Justice Vineyard Pinot Noir is "a wine of intense brilliance" according to Decanter's Clive Pursehouse with layers of velvety tannins that will "undoubtedly transform beautifully over time."

From their benchmark Chardonnays that are "easily some of the best examples I have tasted" according to critic Eric Guido to their "pretty amazing" Pinots, these 2022 Walter Scott selections are well priced for their loyal fans to stock up as well as lovers of Oregon wines looking to explore this exceptional portfolio – echoing Vinous critic Neal Martin who counts Walter Scott among his great discoveries, "If you have not tried these wines yet, do yourself a favor."

96D 95JD 95WE 94V

Showing an electric austerity, the Justice Vineyard sits exposed on a ridgeline in the Eola-Amity appellation, buffetted by the winds through the Van Duzer Corridor. Reductive and flinty aromatics with flashes of green mangoes, smashed chalk and grilled lemon. The palate is stony with a mineral spine that dictates terms to white nectarine flesh, fresh ginger root and a whack of salty sea air.

96 points, Clive Pursehouse, Decanter (May 2024)

The 2022 Chardonnay Justice Vineyard displays a bright yellow hue in the glass and has more lifted reduction on the nose, with savory notes of gunflint, bright citrus, radish, white pepper, and apple skin. It’s linear, persistent, and long on the palate, with a chalky texture and a long finish. Give it another year or two to flesh out, when its fruit will be bolstered a touch. Drink 2025-2035. 165 cases were produced.

95 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Aug 2024)

Invigorating acidity and a lithe and lean texture serve tangy Justice. The show begins with aromas of pear, marjoram and grilled lemons. A bright and refreshing palate showcases flavors of lemon zest, Ligurian olive oil and thyme. This crisp treat deserves a sunny day and copious amounts of fresh seafood.

95 points, Michael Alberty, Wine Enthusiast (Oct 2024)

The 2022 Chardonnay Justice Vineyard is intense, nearly smoky in the best possible way, with a burst of dusty florals, savory herbs and dried apricots. It’s salty and concentrated but silken in texture—almost weighty in feel. Masses of ripe orchard fruits and salty minerals add tremendous depth. It leaves the palate stained in primary concentration, tapering off structured and long with a saline tinge and hints of Asian pear that slowly fade. This is a beast of a wine.

Delicious freshness abounds from the Walter Scott Freedom Hill Pinot Noir. This site, planted in 1981, sits in the foothills of the Coast Range in the Mt Pisgah appellation. Loads of purple florals, smoky blood orange, and pine sap set off an aromatic fireworks display from the glass. The palate retains a savoury intensity as smoky clove and wild mint tussle over sappy red berries and blood orange freshness. It's a gorgeous Pinot Noir that makes a strong case for the calibre of the appellation and this beautifully farmed site.

97 points, Clive Pursehouse, Decanter (May 2024)

A reflective medium red color, the 2022 Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Vineyard is open and pretty in the glass, with pristine notes of wild raspberries, pressed flowers, and rocky earth. Ken Pahlow’s favorite Freedom Hill since 2019, this cuvée is typically more black-fruited, but I really like this pretty vintage. Medium-bodied and well-structured, with ripe, defined tannins, refreshing acidity, and a slightly broader shouldered feel, it’s a fantastic vintage for this wine. Drink 2025-2040. 300 cases were produced.

From 22-year-old vines, the transparent but bright red 2022 Pinot Noir Justice Vineyard is highly aromatic with notes of crushed cranberries, grapefruit, cinnamon, and fresh herbs. Appealing and refined, it’s medium-bodied, with ripe acidity, structured, ripe tannins, and a long feel with more present mineral underpinnings. It has a fantastic texture and is a great wine with a mouthwatering finish. Drink 2025-2040. 150 cases were produced.

Sitting exposed on a ridgeline in the Eola-Amity appellation, the Justice Vineyard Pinot Noir is buffetted by the winds through the Van Duzer Corridor. The Avril family, their renowned parcels planted adjacent to the ruins of the old papal towers in Chateauneuf-du-Pape, have been consistently bottling brilliant wines for decades. Among my very favorites – my personal collection spans multiple vintages – these are wines of unmistakable breed and character; a complete joy to experience. Originally established in the 18th century, their primary parcel is augmented by seventeen old vine plots throughout the appellation, adding further dimension to a wine already at the very highest levels of quality. Over the last few vintages, my notes indicate ever improved character. Paul-Vincent has bottled even more in a long line of rock stars. Draconian selections followed daily passes through each of his parcels, painstakingly clipping each vine for nothing but the very finest berries.

Elegant, stunning and approachable, with seductive aromatics of smoked incense and red tea, plus floral high notes, followed by a well of cassis, licorice and red currant coated in graphite. Dusty in feel, with fine-grained tannins bringing structure and textural complexity. An iron element lingers on the very long finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Drink now through 2035.

96 points, Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator (Nov 2023)

Cherries, raspberries and truffles appear on the nose of the 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape, which weighs in at 15.1% alcohol. Showing ample concentration and length, this medium to full-bodied effort isn't quite as well endowed as the 2022, but it's still a gorgeous wine, framed by silky tannins and finishing with bright, pomegranate-like fruit.

95 points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (Sep 2023)

One of the standouts in the vintage is the 2021 Châteauneuf Du Pape, a ripe, round, medium to full-bodied 2021 offering a beautiful array of black cherry and darker berry fruits, ample Provençal spice, and dried flower nuances. Wonderfully textured and balanced, with ripe tannins, as usual, Vincent has made one of the wines of the vintage. This will evolve gracefully for 15+ years.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2023)

Defined raspberry and redcurrant fruits, some woody spices in the background. Quite a rounded, fluid style, the acidity is really quite marked this year. Tannins are gentle, and it finishes on raspberry and redcurrant coulis. There's a silky touch on the palate. It's built around the acidity, the tannins are just gently sandy. Good sense of purity, quite a Burgundian vintage. Less Grenache in the blend this year as it was particularly hit by the frost.

95 points, Matt Walls, Decanter (Sep 2022)

The 2021 Châteauneuf-du-Pape is made with slightly more Grenache and less Syrah than previous vintages. Intermixing aromas of red and black fruits, dried herbs, white pepper and crushed rocks, this 2021 shows slightly less intensity than either the 2020 or 2019. Full-bodied, elegant and framed by smooth tannins, it is well-balanced by fresh acidity and closes with a savory finish.

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape is showing beautifully, with the sun-kissed style of the vintage yet more depth and density than most in the vintage. Blackberries, Provençal garrigue, spice, and saddle leather all define the aromatics, and it hits the palate with the classic elegance of the estate in its medium to full-bodied, layered, multi-dimensional style. It's one of the wines of the vintage and will have two decades of longevity.

Despite a hailstorm that destroyed approximately one-third of the crop this year, Paul-Vincent Avril managed to produce a wine with the same grape proportions as in previous years, thanks to his vineyard's diverse and fragmented nature. So, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape from Clos des Papes reveals a delicate, aromatic bouquet of peony, gooseberry, lilac, flowers and cherries mingled with delicate notes of fennel and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, sappy and layered, it's perfectly textured with velvety, delicate tannins enhanced by bright acids and a long, ethereal finish. Although the Mourvèdre is slightly dominant at this stage, this wine is unquestionably poised for great aging potential.

97 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Sep 2024)

The alluring 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape won me over in a heartbeat. Vivid licorice, sage, blueberry, lavender, red and black cherry as well as crushed flowers hail from the glass. Full-bodied and intense, the 2022 packs ample flavor concentration yet always maintains balance through lifting freshness. Polished tannins neatly structure this ambitious 2022 that has the potential to age gracefully for at least two decades.

96+ points, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous (Jun 2024)

A richly styled, opulent Châteauneuf that offers a streamlined cascade of ripe cherry, licorice root and toasted chestnut. Mineral energy keeps this powering long distance, with a smoldering foundation of iron. Starts off silky in feel, with a caressing texture quickly firmed up by fine tannins that hold real power. Hints of wet soil and baking spices detail the long, winding finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2026 through 2042.

96 points, Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator (Jan 2025)

A silky, textural and harmonious red with notes of dark cherries, fresh blackberries, dried thyme, currants and some mild spices. It's medium-bodied with finely grained tannins. Elegant and graceful, silky and bright. Fresh center palate with plenty of vitality and a caressing texture. Precise and harmonious with a pure expression of fruit at the center and a vibrant, spicy finish. Drink or hold.

96 points, James Suckling (Apr 2024)

A touch less Mourvèdre this year, but not enough to change the profile of the wine, which is fairly classic albeit pretty bombastic in 2022. Raspberry and black cherry, ripe and exuberant. Full but not massive, the alcohol is present, slightly warming the finish. Tannins are a little grainy, so I would give this time to settle before broaching. Succulent and juicy, with a touch of liquorice. Vincent Avril believes the wine could close down quite early on. So drink young, or (even better) wait until 2030. All destemmed, aged in old foudres.

2023 Thibaud Boudignon Savennieres Clos de Fremine (750ml)
Chenin Blanc from Savennieres, Loire, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

"[Boudignon's] attention to detail in the winemaking process, precise viticulture, dedication and passion for the terroirs mark him as one of France's foremost vignerons and winemakers today." - Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate

Few winemakers have achieved such rapid ascent to cult status in the past two decades as Thibaud Boudignon. Once the long-time winemaker at Domaine de la Soucherie set out on his own, the critical and collectible aficionados took quick notice of his utterly uncompromising style and craftsmanship, and demand has been on an upward trajectory ever since. It's rare to find Boudignon's wines in any meaningful quantity, so tight are the allocations relative to their fanbase, so any time we get a chance at a parcel, especially at jaw-dropping pricing such as this, we jump at it without a second thought.

Leading off, the 93-point 2022 Anjou Blanc is the perfect introduction to this remarkable domaine. "Medium-bodied, perfectly balanced with a seamless, layered texture," and displaying flawless varietal purity, it should be on the shortlist of anyone who's a fan of cult-caliber class for a bargain. Venturing into the single-vineyard wines, we truly see Boudignon's elite skills at work. We just landed a small parcel of the newly released 2023 Clos Fremine, which will undoubtedly rack up future critical acclaim like every previous vintage, while a pair of 97-point renditions of the tête de cuvée Clos de la Hutte demonstrate clearly why Yohan Castaing declares, "[Boudignon] offers wines of purity, tension and finesse with virtually no rivals in Savennières." Showstopping terroir clarity and the potential for decades of cellar evolution put this line-up firmly in the company of France's savviest cellar-worthy white wine buys, but as you might guess, our quantities are very limited, so collectors would be wise to strike quickly at this opportunity.

Ikikko 8yr Sherry Cask Finish Japanese Koji Whisky
From Iki, Nagasaki, Japan
B-21 Top Recommendation

"For the koji initiated, it's a true classic, and for everyone else, it's a chance to discover a singular style of whiskey that can't be duplicated anywhere else."

- Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

The Japanese whisky scene is a study in contrasts. On one hand, it's dominated by a few mega producers whose reputations (and prices) have reached global proportions. On the other hand, it's full of countless boutique operations that carry out their work in the most meticulous fashion to produce some of the most unique whiskeys on the market.

Arguably the hottest style in the Japanese category, koji whisky is made with the same rice mold used in shochu and sake production to ferment the mash. In fact, the Ikinokura distillery on Iki island is primarily renowned for its shochu and sake, and Ikikko starts its journey as a traditionally made Iki island shochu (composed of two-thirds malted barley and one-third koji rice), which is then subjected to extended aging in ex-Oloroso sherry casks. The result is something that bears some familiar hallmarks of a hand-crafted Scotch or bourbon, but only enough to broaden its prospective audience of whiskey lovers. As B-21 spirits buyer Andrew Kitz notes, "for bourbon or Scotch fans looking to branch out, the Ikikko 8 Year is your perfect bridge introduction to this one-of-a-kind spirit." For experienced fans of Japanese whisky, it's still all koji at heart, a beautiful expression of class and character that speaks clearly of its traditional origins, all for a razor-sharp, market-best price.

And now for the something completely different... yet familiar. The koji whiskey category is still somewhat a mystery to many, but for bourbon or Scotch fans looking to branch out, the Ikikko 8 Year is your perfect bridge introduction to this one-of-a-kind spirit. Pouring a pale, burnished gold color, it leads with a nose that will stand out to any fan of elegant, unpeated Speyside malt. Made from two-thirds malted barley, it shows this character in a charming interplay with the other one-third rice component. Sweet cereal, gingersnap cookie, and pumpernickel aromas lend it woodsy complexity at the outset, with some candied citrus in the background. The palate boasts an engaging textural backbone that will resonate with bourbon lovers, with a flavor profile that’s hard to pin down at first, offering up anything from red apple and citrus pith to new leather and cardamom, all riding a bright, lively mouthfeel. With time, the aromatics take on more elegant tones like sesame seed, subtle white flowers, and white chocolate. The palate follows suit now with white pepper, that same white chocolate character from the nose, and a surprisingly fresh, cool mint touch on the finish. For the koji initiated, it’s a true classic, and for everyone else, it’s a chance to discover a singular style of whiskey that can’t be duplicated anywhere else.

93 points, Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer (Mar 2025)

Iki Island in Japan’s Tsushima Straits is renowned for its shochu, and this whisky is made using koji mold to ferment the rice and barley. Light aromas of wood spice, lemon meringue pie, citrus peel, new baseballs, and floral blossoms. It’s no pushover on the palate, however, with honeyed nectarine and canned peaches, red apple, caramel, vanilla essence, cardamom, and pepper, then toffee, citrus, dried fruit, egg custard, and cocoa powder.

High N' Wicked The Judge 14yr Whiskey (750ml)
From Tennessee
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Founded by two veterans of spirits giant Brown-Forman, independent bottler High N' Wicked has a made a name for themselves in the craft whiskey scene by their access to superb stocks from the country's best sources. Their series of highly limited, age-stated releases have been cult collector's hits since their debut in 2020, but now you can add "stunning value star" to their list of must-try offerings.

When we tasted the High N' Wicked Kentucky Straight Bourbon earlier this year, it was clear from the get-go that everything about this whiskey was done with pure pleasure in mind. "Complex and enticing," according to Wine Enthusiast's 95-point review, this 5-year-old gem boasts quite a high rye content, but its sweet mashbill finds the perfect pocket of balance and opulence that make it incredibly approachable for a wide audience.

Of course, you'll also want to pay close attention to the The Judge and The Jury. The market on age-stated American whiskey is through the roof, and you're almost always looking at triple digits for anything with this kinds of number on them. That makes this pair a can't-miss, flat-out steal in the category. After 14 years in new #4 char oak, High N' Wicked gave the 96-point The Judge an addition six months in Hungarian Tokaji dessert wine casks. Ramping up the intensity, the 94-point The Jury saw an extra year in the new #4 char barrel, finishing in a premium ex-Madeira cask. Nothing added and nothing chill-filtered out, these are luxurious, altogether singular expressions that we seldom see in the bourbon category.

Warm vanilla aromas welcome this limited release bourbon. The velvety palate echoes that vanilla note, layering it with hazelnut, cocoa powder and oak, polished with cinnamon sparkle and a hint of orange peel. This would make a great old-fashioned. Distilled in Tennessee, aged almost 14 years, then finished for six months in ex-Hungarian Tokaji barrels and bottled at cask strength.

2022 Walter Scott X Novo Vineyard Chardonnay (750ml)
Chardonnay from Eola-Amity Hills, Oregon
B-21 Top Recommendation

A stunning Chardonnay from the ‘ifkyk’ X Novo site in the Eola-Amity Hills. X Novo is intentionally diverse 15 clones of Pinot Noir and 20 clones of Chardonnay are intertwined and planted with serious density in this tiny site. Reductive chipped flint notes give way to Hawthorne, briny oyster shell elements, and lemon oil aromas. The palate is well composed—gorgeous layers of smoked citrus grilled ripe pineapple flesh, savoury, and thirst-slaking lemon verbena. A mineral spine looks down on it all. Simply gorgeous.

98 points, Clive Pursehouse, Decanter (May 2024)

The 2022 Chardonnay X Novo Vineyard pours a bright medium yellow-green hue, and in this vintage, it’s elegant and harmonious, with a ripe perfume of sweet flowers, lilac, candied lemon, and pristine ripe pear fruit. Medium-bodied, it fills out the palate with a more rounded feel and has a lovely texture, just a hint of citrus oils, a delicate almondine, clean feel, and a lovely, long finish with a pretty, delicately toasted feel. Its viscosity frames the wine beautifully, and I know there's high acidity, but it feels so appealing. Drink over the next 10-12 years. 410 cases were produced.

97 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Aug 2024)

The steely X Novo is easily one of my favorite Willamette Valley Chardonnays. The 2022 is an aromatic treasure trove of buttered popcorn, lavender, sage, orange cake, lemons and the flinty scent of two rocks colliding to spark a flame. Palate-crunching acidity and flavors of iced lemon tea, lemon verbena, saline and white pepper seal the deal.

2021 Vajra Barolo Ravera (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation

98JD 97WA 96WS

The 2021 Barolo Ravera comes from an amphitheater-shaped vineyard that captures the sunlight, which the producers believe is what gives this cuvée its depth and richness. In the glass, the nose of the 2021 Barolo Ravera is remarkably concentrated, revealing notes of black raspberry and grenadine, fresh leather, and pressed flowers, with a long and sustained feel. The generous sweetness of fruit and its more noble, ripe tannins come through on the mid-palate, but it has a lot of finesse on the finish. The sapidity and purity of the fruit meets the tannins and acidity where they are fabulously. The estate keeps improving these wines, and this one is exceptional. Harvested over three days, it saw 55 days of submerged cap maceration, followed by 26 months of cask aging. In 2021, they lost about 15% of this vineyard production due to spring frost.

98 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2025)

From one of the most sought-after crus sites today, the G.D. Vajra 2021 Barolo Ravera opens to a vibrant ruby color. The wine takes its time opening, especially when tasted young, but that delay bodes well for its future bottle evolution. This wine is built like a wall, with each brick representing its own distinct character. There is dark fruit, pressed flower, herb, ebony and a very elegant mineral side. The bouquet is direct and vertical, with lifted intensity over a medium-plus palate. The tannins are elegantly managed, and this wine has the latitude for long cellar aging. It ferments in stainless steel and ages in large oak casks.

97+ points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jan 2025)

This red is complex and solidly built, featuring black cherry, blackberry and black currant aromas and flavors. Iron, earth and underbrush accents chime in on the firm finish. Remains fresh and vibrant. Best from 2029 through 2050. From Italy.
