You said my order would be received by 3/3, and although I missed it that day and got it the next, that was due to a doctor and vet appt so it's all good. With respect to the two bottles ordered but not yet delivered, I'm assuming you will complete that at your earliest convenience without an additional delivery charge, and I thank you! Please advise if this was a supply chain issue or...? Thanks again.

B‑21Fine Wines & Liquors is fantastic. They had in stock a Chianti Classico Riserva I had been looking for, at a very good price. I ordered 6 bottles, and was impressed the shipping was only $12.00. They shipped fast in an extremely well packed box. Since an adult signature is required upon delivery, and unsure if anyone would be home, I had the package delivered to my local Walgreens store...worked flawlessly. I will definitely buy from them again.

2022 Passing Time Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Red Mountain, Washington State
B-21 Top Recommendation

"Passing Time is a serious contender in the fine wine scene of Washington State ... I’ll certainly keep my eye on how this project progresses." - Eric Guido, Vinous

Today's offer is a special one for our Florida family. While you may or may not have heard of Passing Time, a thrilling new player in boutique Washington Cabernet that's making huge waves in the critical press, you no doubt know the founder, legendary Miami Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino. Working with acclaimed winemaker Chris Peterson from several of the state's most prized vineyards (including Champoux, Klipsun, and Wallula), this project is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with. Having recently tasted the entire range of 2022s ourselves, we can wholeheartedly stand behind the raft of monster scores and impressive accolades that follow these wines.

Starting off, the JD94 Red Blend is "an impressive wine at any price point but offers outstanding value" at our sub-$60 price. However, it's the appellation-specific bottlings that truly steal the show, each one a quintessential representation of its origins. The "impeccably structured and detailed" 2022 Red Mountain Cabernet is arguably the cream of the crop (but we're really just splitting hairs, as they're all so compelling). It positively "vibrates with energetic red and black fruit flavors, supported by fine-grained tannins and a lively line, finishing long and shimmery," according to Lisa Perrotti-Brown. If you after something that reminds you "a touch of Château Montrose in Saint-Estèphe," don't miss the Horse Heaven Hills Cab. This double 97-point Left Bank lookalike is perfectly poised to cruise for decades in the cellar. Finally, the double 97-point Walla Walla Cabernet draws from two iconic sites, Seven Hills and Pepper Bridge, to deliver "a rock-solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness to match the vivacious, muscular black fruit, finishing long and fragrant."

It's rare to find a range in which each wine showcases such stunning class and sophistication in its own particular way, but Passing Time is well on the way to distinguishing itself as one of the most exciting new names in collectible Cabernet, and you'll be thrilled to have any and all of these standout performers in your cellar for decades to come, especially at our unbeatable market-best pricing.

The Red Mountain's boysenberry and graphite aromas were not unexpected. The earthy, nutty, starchy note that reminded me of cassava was not, but I enjoyed it. Dark raspberry, Bosc pear, dark chocolate and pine needle tea flavors rumble over a chalky texture, supported by bright acidity and mildly grippy tannins. Serve with Yorkshire pudding to be revered in your time.

97 points, Michael Alberty, Wine Enthusiast (Sep 2025)

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain comes from several stellar vineyards in the appellation, including Kiona Heart of the Hill and Klipsun Vineyard, with 2% Cabernet Franc and aged in French oak, a majority new. A swelter of rich black fruit dominates, showing the richness of the region while striking a balance between ripeness and freshness, ending medium to full-bodied in style. The tannins are strong and present but don’t get in the way of a velvety mouthfeel accented in dried herb, graphite, and leather. Drink 2025-2037.

96 points, Virginie Boone, Jeb Dunnuck (Jul 2025)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Red Mountain shoots out of the glass with vibrant notes of black raspberries, Morello cherries, and wild blueberries, giving way to notes of mint tea, Sichuan pepper, pencil lead, and cardamom. Medium to full-bodied, the palate vibrates with energetic red and black fruit flavors, supported by fine-grained tannins and a lively line, finishing long and shimmery. Beautiful! The blend is 98% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc.

96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Mar 2025)

Impeccably structured and detailed, with expressive flavors of blackberry and cherry highlighted by mocha espresso and toasty spices as this builds richness toward polished tannins. Drink now through 2033. 325 cases made.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley is from sites that are a touch cooler than Red Mountain, a truth that shows in its energetic red fruit and lightness of spice, characteristics complemented by compelling elements of tobacco and leather saddle. Sourced from Seven Hills and Pepper Bridge, the wine has an iron fist of broad tannins that should mellow with time and provide an intensity of structure now. The full-bodied power is balanced by underlying acidity and an uplift of velvety mouthfeel. Don’t miss out on this brilliant wine. Drink 2025-2037.

97 points, Virginie Boone, Jeb Dunnuck (Jul 2025)

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs a lot of swirling to bring out notes of freshly crushed blackcurrants, just-picked blackberries, and cassis, plus nuances of red roses, powdered cinnamon, and tree bark. The full-bodied palate delivers a rock-solid structure of firm, grainy tannins and bold freshness to match the vivacious, muscular black fruit, finishing long and fragrant.

97 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Mar 2025)

Pretty aromas of violets, cedar chest drawers, thyme and intensely sweet black-and-blueberries are joined by a saline and iron note similar to tasting blood when you bite your lip. Bright acidity and silky tannins prop up full-bodied flavors like black cherries, dark roasted Indonesian coffee and dark chocolate. This is a wine to be savored over several hours with good conversation.

2017 Chateau Leoville Poyferre (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Saint-Julien, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Sourced from over 80 hectares of estate vineyards in some of St. Julien's best terroir, these exceptional vintages from Chateau Leoville-Poyferre boast Cabernet's Sauvignon's expressive dark fruit with elegant textured minerality and smooth, silky tannins, all luxurious, balanced Left Bank Bordeaux blends earning 94 plus point ratings and delivered ex-Chateau in perfect provenance at impressive value pricing.

While dating back to 1638, Chateau Leoville-Poyferre's modern renaissance began in 1979, when Didier Cuvelier became the first member of his family to take charge of the estate after studying winemaking under the legendary Emile Peynaud. Implementing an extensive renovation of the vineyards with massive replanting and nearly doubling the estate's holdings, Didier hired renowned consultant Michel Rolland to manage the harvest and refine the final blend, shifting the estate's emphasis to Cabernet Sauvignon and crafting the Grand Vin in a richer, more opulent style by harvesting later to ensure even ripening.

Revisiting it at a retrospective tasting in 2021, James Suckling describes the full-bodied 100 pt. 2009 Leoville-Poyferre as "A red that gives wonderful pleasure now but will continue to do so for decades ahead." Vinous critic Antonio Galloni calls the 95 pt. 2014 Leoville-Poyferre "Gorgeous" and "Super impressive" while Jeb Dunnuck describes the 97 pt. 2015 Leoville-Poyferre as an "unctuous, ripe, pedal-to-the-metal beauty." Dunnuck calls the 98 pt. 2016 Leoville-Poyferre a "brilliantly concentrated, full-bodied, opulent beast of a wine," while the Wine Advocate's Lisa Perrotti-Brown describes it as "simply alive in the mouth, culminating in an epically long finish that will leave your mouth practically tingling. WOW!" James Suckling calls the "serious" 95 pt. 2017 Leoville-Poyferre "one of the best of the appellation" while the Wine Enthusiast's Roger Voss named both the 2017 and 2018 Cellar Selections built for the long haul. Finally, the "legendary" 100 pt. 2018 Leoville-Poyferre is a "a total thrill that tops my scale" according to critic Jeb Dunnuck while Antonio Galloni declares the perfect 2018 "dazzles from start to finish," earning it the #7 spot on the Wine Spectator Top 100 Wines of 2021.

All poised to reward Bordeaux lovers for decades to come, these perfectly cellared, top releases from Second Growth Chateau Leoville-Poyferre delivers powerfully concentrated fruit of exceptional depth and length with rich, ripe tannins, now offered at specially negotiated pricing, some ready to enjoy and all set to evolve in the cellar. After a recent retrospective tasting over the last two decades, Vinous critic Neal Martin summed it up: "Leoville-Poyferre has really taken flight" often "challenging the First Growths" and now offered in perfect condition at a fraction of the price.

97V 95JD 95WE 95JS

A ravishing Saint-Julien, the Léoville-Poyferré is also very clearly one of the wines of the vintage on the Left Bank. Raspberry jam, blood orange, mint, spice and mocha all race out of the glass as this sumptuous, flamboyant wine shows off its exotic personality. With its vertical lift and explosive energy, the 2017 has so much to offer. It has been nothing less than stunning on the three occasions I have tasted it so far. In 2017, the Grand Vin is 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. Because of the late season rains, only 3 out of the 5 parcels that typically inform the Grand Vin were used. This a tremendous effort from the Cuvelier family. Don't miss it.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2020)

Based on a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Chateau Leoville-Poyferre saw malolactic in barrels and spent 18 months in 80% new French oak. Sporting a deep ruby/purple hue, it delivers big, powerful notes of blackberries, blackcurrants, crushed violets, tobacco, and a touch of chocolate. Possessing medium to full-bodied richness, a rounded, opulent texture, and sweet tannins, it’s unquestionably one of the biggest, richest wines in the vintage. Give bottles 4-6 years of bottle age and enjoy over the following 2-3 decades. Tasted twice.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2020)

This wine brings balance to the solid tannins and luscious fruits. Firm tannins plus layers of acidity give freshness and great aging ability. The wine has a great future. Drink from 2024.

95 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Mar 2020)

A red with currant and blueberry aromas and flavors and some citrus and vanilla. Medium body and creamy, integrated tannins. Shows finesse and depth for the vintage. One of the best from the appellation. Serious for the vintage. Drinkable now, but much better in 2022.

94JD 94JS 94JA 94WI 92WA 92V

One of the more stacked, ripe and rockingly textured wines from the left bank, the 2012 Léoville Poyferré sports a deep ruby/purple color to go with terrific notes of crème de cassis, graphite, lead pencil shavings and violets. Rich, full-bodied, supple and forward, with low acidity and ripe tannin, give bottles 4-5 years (although it dishes out ample pleasure even today) and enjoy through 2037.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Jan 2018)

Really beautiful now with blackcurrant, licorice and red-berry aromas, following through to a full body with layers of fine tannins and a beautiful finish. It’s really starting to drink nicely . Drink or hold.

94 points, James Suckling (Mar 2021)

Less elegant than the 2011, but also less austere, there is plenty of get hold of here, with evident depth to the black cherry, blackberry fruits overlaid with chocolate shavings, brioche and liqourice. Sums up muchof what i love about this property - it has a kick and a sense of great cheer, along with the slate texture, tannic hold and balance of St Julien. No need to wait to drink although will age from here. Harvest October 8 to 19. 80% new oak.

94 points, Jane Anson (Sep 2021)

The 2012 Leoville Poyferre is medium to deep garnet colored. It features notes of cassis, blackberry preserves, and prunes with touches of fallen leaves, cedar chest, lavender, and pencil lead. Medium-bodied, the palate is firm and grainy, with plenty of black fruit preserves in the mid-palate and a long finish with loads of mineral sparks. It needs time!

94 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Aug 2022)

Owned by the Cuvelier family since 1920, this property over the last 20 years has made some great wines in the Médoc. The 2012, a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot and 4% Cabernet Franc, is opaque purple, thick-looking, and from bottle much more impressive than it was from barrel. This very extracted, rich, full-bodied, masculine Léoville Poyferré needs a good 5-8 years of bottle age and should evolve well for at least 20-25 years. Loads of blackberry and cassis, crushed rock and graphite notes are present in this medium to full-bodied, impressively concentrated and pure wine. Forget it for a while, as this is one of the bigger, richer Médocs.

92+ points, Robert M. Parker, Jr., Wine Advocate (Issue # 218 - Apr 2015)

The 2012 Léoville-Poyferré has quite an atypical strict bouquet with blackberry, melted tar, graphite and crushed stone aromas. This opens very nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy notes on the entry, fairly saline with good tension, superb backbone and density on the finish. This is very promising, but it may require more bottle age just to smooth out its edges. Tasted twice at Bordeaux Index's Ten Year-On tasting and blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting.

95V 94WE 94JS 94JA 93WA 93JD 93WS

The 2014 Léoville Poyferré has a very complex bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, crushed stone, cedar and hints of violet. It is extremely focused, intense rather than overtly powerful. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp and generous, conveying much more tension and precision than the Léoville Las-Cases. It gradually fans out in the second half with real mineralité, quite profound in the context of the vintage. Outstanding. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

95 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Mar 2018)

The wine is concentrated with tannins that come from both the firm fruit and the wood aging. It is packed with blackberry flavors that come through the structure strongly. The velvet texture (that is just a hint at the moment) is going to bring out the richness of this wine produced with consultation from Michel Rolland. Drink from 2024.

94 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Feb 2017)

A ripe, generous and substantial wine for this appellation with some real concentration. Plenty of beautiful currant and blackberry character, as well as a solid core of ripe, dusty and velvety tannins and enough acidity to carry the long, savory finish. Slight lean now. Better in 2024.

94 points, James Suckling (Mar 2021)

Liqourice, smoke, baked earth, graphite, espresso and textured rippled black fruits. The tannins are holding things close to their chest, and this is enjoyable but needs time. A vintage that is generally seen to have been best in this section of the Médoc peninsula, and this is great quaity but needs a few years to open back up. 80% new oak, harvest October 1 to 14.

94 points, Jane Anson (Sep 2021)

The 2014 Leoville-Poyferre was surprisingly backward and tight on the nose (usually it is the most expressive and generous Léoville in its youth). The precision and focus is intact, but it is broody and sultry at the moment. The palate is medium-bodied with firm structure, which suggests that it has turned volte face since its opulent showing in barrel. Overall, this comes across as perhaps a slightly more austere and masculine wine from Didier Cuvelier, though that is not a criticism, just an observation. I would like to see a little more persistence on the finish, but the tidings bode well for this mercurial and fascinating Léoville-Poyferre. I can see it improving with bottle age, hence the plus sign against my score.

93+ points, Wine Advocate (Mar 2017)

A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc and the balance Petit Verdot that wasn’t harvest until the middle of October (this is later than most), the 2014 Léoville Poyferré is a ripe, concentrated, seriously impressive wine in the vintage that offers more exuberance, texture, and character than most. Crème de cassis, graphite, toasty oak, and hints of tobacco all emerge from this purple colored, pure, medium to full-bodied 2014 that has sweet tannin, beautiful purity of fruit, and a great finish. While it doesn’t have the depth of a truly great vintage, it shines for its balance, texture, and sheer charm. Drink this beauty anytime over the coming 15-20 years.

93 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2018)

Very pure, with a beautiful beam of violet and plum sauce carried by a chiseled graphite spine. Gorgeous anise and roasted apple wood notes are inlaid seamlessly on the finish. Shows ample grip and drive. Rock-solid. Best from 2020 through 2030. 15,000 cases made.

The flagship 2019 Château Léoville Poyferré is based on 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot. It's one of the bigger, richer wines in the vintage and has a gorgeous, thrilling, full-bodied style as well as notes of crème de cassis, tobacco leaf, violets, and chocolate. While many estates seem to be playing it safe and focusing on so-called elegance and balance, I love that Poyferré continues to make a ripe, sexy, beautifully textured wine that always offers more opulence and sexiness than most in the vintage. Ranking with the crème de la crème of the vintage, this gorgeous Poyferré can be enjoyed any time over the coming 40-50 years. Bravo!

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Léoville-Poyferré is creamy, racy and voluptuous to the core. Bright red cherry/plum fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and menthol fill out the layers with effortless grace. In some tastings, the 2019 has come across as quite powerful, while in other moments it shows greater finesse. Either way, the 2019 is positively stunning. I very much admire its energy and persistence. Tasted three times.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Powerful, seductive, sexy and balanced, this has tension right from the start, coiled textured tannins that have grip, salinity and vibrancy. Creamy damson, blackberry and smoked vanilla pod expand through the mid palate. I loved it En Primeur but it has improved since and this is an upscore from the 96 points I gave it at my last tasting. Harvest September 22 to October 11. 80% new oak.

97 points, Jane Anson (Sep 2021)

The 2019 Léoville Poyferré is showing very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of crème de cassis and wild berries mingled with notions of licorice, loamy soil, cigar wrapper and smoke. Full-bodied, velvety and polished, it's broad and enveloping, with an ample core of fruit, ripe tannins and succulent acids, concluding with a long, precise finish. Invariably the most sumptuous of the three Léovilles, featuring some 35% Merlot, the 2019 is a terrific effort that will offer a wide drinking window.

96 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate (Apr 2022)

Throws off gorgeous warmed plum, blueberry reduction and açaí berry compote aromas and flavors, laced with ganache and sweet tobacco from start to finish. Delivers ample structure in the guise of a cold cast iron note buried underneath the showy fruit, with a flash of violet for treble in the background. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2040. 15,000 cases made.

The Grand Vin 2020 Château Léoville Poyferré, which is released in a stylish black bottle commemorating a century for the Cuvelier family, is reminiscent of the 2016 with its powerful, concentrated, yet vibrant and inward style. Pure crème de cassis, melted chocolate, loamy earth, graphite, and some spicy nuances all define the aromatics, and it's full-bodied, with a stacked mid-palate, nicely integrated oak, ripe tannins, and one hell of a great finish. This is another utterly brilliant wine from this team, which has been producing First Growth quality wines for many years now. The blend of the 2020 is 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot, aged in 80% new barrels, hitting 13.58% natural alcohol and a pH of 3.81. It will benefit from just 5-7 years of bottle age and will evolve for 50 years or more if well stored. Bravo. Tasted multiple times with consistent results.

98+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2023)

The 2020 Leoville Poyferre is deep purple-black in color. Gregarious scents of redcurrant jelly, kirsch, and warm cassis prance out of the glass, leading to subtle nuances of wild sage, graphite, damp soil, and crushed rocks, before giving glimpses of a gorgeous underlying perfume of lilacs, lavender, and cinnamon stick. The fantastically vivacious, medium-bodied palate vibrates with amazing energy, delivering crunchy red and black fruit layers, framed by firm, fine-grained tannins and a racy backbone, finishing long and perfumed. Exquisitely graceful with a natural beauty, this is a real head-turner!

97+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Jun 2023)

The 2020 Léoville-Poyferré is every bit as impressive as it was from barrel. If anything, it has gained in freshness and vibrancy with élevage. Dark cherry, plum, mocha, graphite and a kiss of French oak are some of the many notes that infuse the 2020 with tons of character. I especially admire its vertical energy and buttoned up personality. In some recent vintages Léoville-Poyferré has been quite showy, but the 2020 also has a more nuanced side that is hugely appealing.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2023)

Excellent quality, head and shoulders above most of the vintage even in St Julien. Blackberry, black truffle, damson, liqourice, crayon and crushed rocks throughout. Great stuff. Harvest September 14 to 30, 35hl/h yield, 3.8ph. Consultant Michel Rolland, winemaker Isabelle Davin, 80% new oak. A speical bottle as this vintage marks 100 years with the Cuvelier family.

97 points, Jane Anson (Feb 2023)

This is really floral on the nose with violets and roses, and some black berries and dark cherries. It’s medium- to full-bodied with firm and polished tannins, and plenty of hazelnut and milk chocolate. Structured, yet so finely textured. So attractive and enticing now but needs three or four years to show what it has. Try after 2026.

96 points, James Suckling (May 2023)

Supple and generous with mouthwatering acidity, though really quite tannic at this point which does cover up some of the nuance. I like the texture, the frame and the weight, it's clean, polished and well worked, not overdone at all, but this has a sense of potent seduction in the flavours, rich blackcurrant, perfumed and scented. Detailed with lots of stony, slate, and wet stone elements giving a wonderful terroir influence. It's not as immediately charming as the 2019, the tension still prominent, but this will be brilliant in 5-10 years.

2023 Domaine Clos de la Chapelle Volnay Santenots du Milieu 1er Cru (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Beaune, Burgundy, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Of all the new direct-import discoveries to join our portfolio this year, perhaps none reach the heights of quality that Domaine Clos de la Chapelle does. This remarkable domaine under the direction of Pierre Merguey and his American partner Mark O'Connell is still flying under the radar, but based on the stunning quality of what we tasted at Wine Paris and again at the domaine earlier this year, they're poised for a big breakout into the elite echelon.

The domaine's vineyard holdings are impressive to say the least, centered around their monopole Volnay Clos de la Chapelle 1er Cru. Top to bottom, the 2023s were incredibly impressive on both occasions we tasted them, at Wine Paris in February and again at the domaine in April. The critical press is equally impressed on a consistent basis, as the domaine has racked up solid accolades from Wine Spectator, Burghound, Inside Burgundy, and View From the Cellar.

Every bottling is worth a place in your cellar, but it's the Volnay Taillepieds that truly steals the show in 2023. Notching 95 points from the notoriously stingy John Gilman, it's a world-class expression of this hallowed site that can stand toe-to-toe with the likes of d'Angerville and Montille at a fraction of their prices. Gilman exclaims, "I have always loved this terroir since my very earliest days drinking Burgundy and it seems pretty clear to me that today, no one makes a better example of Taillepieds than the team at Clos de la Chapelle!" The JG94 Volany Santentots du Milieu is a bona fide gem in its own. "Remarkably sensual," the 2023 is "a simply great bottle of Santenots du Milieu in the making." The sleeper gem, however, is the Beaune Champs Pimot 1er Cru. The lesser-know lieu-dit turned out a fantastic 2023 with a "complex aromatic constellation" and a "a very good core of fruit, tangy acids, fine focus and balance and a long, suavely tannic finish."

It's safe to say we haven't been this excited to introduce a new producer in a long time, and our direct access to the domaine's cellars makes the entire line-up some of the sharpest collectible buys in our Burgundy inventory.

Mark O’Connell’s 2023 Santenots du Milieu is an outstanding young wine, showing absolutely superb aromatic complexity right out of the blocks. The beautiful bouquet wafts from the glass in a mix of red and black cherries, pomegranate, raw cocoa, pigeon, dark soil tones, a refined framing of cedary oak and a topnote of distant bonfire. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, precise and complex, with gorgeous soil signature, ripe, buried tannins, seamless balance and a long, vibrant and extremely promising finish. This is a simply great bottle of Santenots du Milieu in the making. It reminds me a bit of the Comtes Lafon version from the 1985 vintage when it was young!

2023 Vincent Girardin Meursault Les Narvaux (750ml)
Chardonnay from Meursault, Burgundy, France

"I have said this before but it bears repeating that Germain has been on a roll over the last 5 years and 2023 is again a fine example of that success." - Allen Meadows, Burghound

Vincent Girardin's staggering portfolio of domaine and négociant bottlings can be a daunting task to wrap your head around, but once you dive in, the whites always seem to be the ticket at this Meursault-based stalwart. Our Burgundy team's visit to the domaine last fall proved that notion in 2023 as well, a vintage which favored Chardonnay anyway.

We've already introduced you to one of this past year's shining stars in Burgundy value in the 2023 Cuvée St-Vincent Bourgogne Blanc, which B-21 buyer Andrew Kitz says "overdelivers in a big way," and now we've just received a handful of other excellent expressions that should grab the attention of any savvy white Burgundy fan. The 2023 Meursault Narvaux is a top-tier village cru that "nudges Premier Cru in quality" according to Neal Martin, also earning Outstanding and Top Value marks from Burghound. No less impressive, the "pedigreed, precise, and textbook" Puligny-Montrachet Vieilles Vignes shows that winemaker Eric Germain knows his way around outside his Meursault home turf. Turning to the 1er crus, the "elegant yet magisterial" 2023 Chassange 1er Cru La Romanée is "one to watch" according to Martin, and the JM91-94 Puligny 1er Cru Les Folatières is a superb representation of this treasured terroir that stands with the finest of the vintage.

There's no shortage of hyped-up, next big things in Burgundy, but when it comes to reliable performance year in and year out, you can't go wrong with a standard-bearer like Girardin in an excellent vintage like 2023.

93JM 92V 92BH

Two thirds domaine in Les Gorges de Narvaux and Les Chaumes de Narvaux, the rest Narvaux Dessous from purchased grapes from vines they manage. Always last to be bottled as it really takes time to express itself. A little lime tint to the lemon yellow. This is indeed less expressive now than the Casse Tetes, but the surge of fruit at the back confirms how good this wine will become. Drink from 2028-2032. Tasted Oct 2024.

91-93 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy (Jan 2025)

The 2023 Meursault Les Narvaux has an intriguing nose featuring yellow fruit, melted candle wax and lemongrass aromas opening in the glass. The palate is well balanced with perhaps the best acidic spine of the three Meursault Villages from Girardin. It certainly has impressive tension with decent length on the finish. This nudges Premier Cru in quality.

90-92 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Jan 2025)

A fresh, cool and airy nose freely reveals its aromas of just sliced apple and pear and plenty of citrus influence. The super-sleek and beautifully textured medium-bodied flavors also flash ample minerality on the youthfully austere, clean and agreeably dry finale where a touch of youthful austere eventually emerges. This is also very good and worth your interest. *Outstanding, Top Value*

5 Sentidos Sierra Negra Mezcal (750ml)
From Oaxaca, Mexico
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

If you're a mezcal fan or collector and you haven't jumped on board with Cinco Sentidos yet, you're missing out on some of the most compelling, artfully crafted offerings in the category. The brainchild of American Jason Cox, the project began as a collection of house mezcals selected for his upstart Oaxaca restaurant El Destilado. This transplant with an insatiable thirst for artisan agave spirits spent countless hours and miles traversing Oaxaca and its surrounding environs, scouting out the best artisan mezcal producers no one had yet heard of. We're talking true family operations that run on sweat and calloused hands and that produce stunningly complex, singular expressions you won't find anywhere else. Today, the Cinco Sentidos range offers a dizzying array of options and styles, and the two on offer here are just a glimpse of the full spectrum, but once you get a hold of them, you'll find yourself diving into the deep end.

The Arroqueño from Pédro Hernandez is a masterpiece of clay-pot distillation, "a pure, handcrafted beauty and a reference-point for its style and varietal." This huge agave species is rarely cultivated due to its extremely long maturation period of 20+ years, so it's somewhat of a unicorn on the mezcal scene, and in the hands of a true maestro like Tio Pédro, it reaches its apex.

The Sierra Negra is equally singular, both in terms of rarity and character. Maestro Alberto Martinez knocks it out of the park with this rare agave species in an expression that communicates its origins like only the very finest mezcals can. As B-21 Spirits Buyer Andrew Kitz writes, "It’s arguably the most distinctive expression in the Cinco Sentidos line ... Any chance you have to get your hands on it, jump at it and don’t think twice."

If you're already familiar with Cinco Sentidos, you'll no doubt want to add these gems to your shelf at home, and if you haven't discovered them yet, this pair is the perfect introduction to the top-tier craftsmanship that goes into all of Jason Cox's selections.

94AK

The Sierra Negra is another stunning representation of the mezcal ancestrale style from maestro Alberto Martinez and his son-in-law Reynaldo. Working at high altitude, they use nitrogen-rich tepehuaje (a local tree bark) and spring water to stabilize the fermentations in the cold temperatures, before distilling in traditional clay pots. Initial aromas of sweet agave are accented by citrus oil, faint smoke, and vegetal undertones. The mineral base is incredibly fine and precise, redolent of the stony, volcanic soils of the region. Secondary notes of toasted sesame seed, parsnip, burnt orange peel, and cookie dough eventually meld into a heady, complex chaparral profile – if you’ve ever slept under the stars in the high desert, this is what you smell as the sun sets, temperatures drop, and the breeze kicks up. The medium-full weight of the palate is, again, very volcanic at its core, with flavors of tart citrus pith and asphalt backed by firm textural grip and a touch of heat. With air, it takes on a complex herbal edge with juniper, mint, and sage leading to an extremely long, salty finish. It’s arguably the most distinctive expression in the Cinco Sentidos line. The only thing I don’t love about this mezcal is how little of it is typically available. Any chance you have to get your hands on it, jump at it and don’t think twice.

2019 Alban Vineyards Syrah Reva (750ml)
Syrah from Edna Valley, California

"John Alban is a pioneer through and through, having spearheaded the Rhône Ranger movement and set into motion what would become some of the Central Coast's most sought-after bottlings." - Wine Advocate

Fans of cult-calber California Rhône wines need no introduction to this iconic estate, as Alban has long been the standard bearer for the pinnacle of what these varietals can achieve in California's Central Coast. A glowing critical track record a mile long points to some of the Golden State's most inimitable bottlings, and John Alban's style is the benchmark by which many other producers judge their own work. As Jeb Dunnuck remarks, "I don't think anyone is doing Rhône varieties better."

Leading off this limited-quantity opportunity, the estate's flagship 2021 Patrina is "a terrific introduction to the wines of this incredible estate" thanks to its "a classic, seamless, incredibly impressive style" according to Dunnuck. Showcasing the estate's world-class single-vineyard Syrahs, the double 98-point 2019 Reva is a showpiece of jaw-dropping class, "breathtaking in youth but certain to develop further complexity," as described by Decanter. Likewise, Dunnuck calls the 99-point 2019 Lorraine "ultra-classic ... a full-bodied, round, velvety textured, utterly seamless Syrah with ripe tannins, a great mid-palate, and a gorgeous finish that keeps you coming back to the glass." Finally, the newly arrived 2020 Seymour's Syrah is "magical stuff ... a heavenly bottle of wine that will most likely merit a triple-digit rating in 4-6 years."

Fans of the estate will once again be over the moon for the latest renditions, but anyone who's a fan of the very best offerings from California should jump at the chance to experience these singular expressions, especially at our razor-sharp, market-leading pricing.

98JD 98D 96WA

Moving to the Syrahs, the 2019 Syrah Reva reveals a much cooler climate-like style in its blackberry, graphite, pepper, and bouquet garni-like nuances, and it picks up an almost Cornas-like game and white pepper character with time in the glass. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, ripe yet polished tannins, and a great finish. It reminds me slightly of the 2018, although with slightly less concentration. It will evolve for 20-25 years.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Aug 2023)

Unabashedly powerful yet visceral and alluring, John Alban's Syrah is a benchmark expression of the sun-drenched intensity of the maritime Edna Valley in San Luis Obispo. Smoky, spicy swirls of raspberry preserve, leather and sweet tobacco meld into a palate that's profoundly ripe yet lively and fresh, struck by layers of dusty graphite, ore and iodine. Breathtaking in youth but certain to develop further complexity.

98 points, Anna Lee C. Iijima, Decanter (Feb 2024)

I tasted the 2019 Syrah Reva on July 8, shortly after its bottling in June. The 2019 is particularly elegant, with notable detail and vibrancy. "I've been more curious about the reaction of consumers to the 2019 Reva than I have in a long time," winemaker John Alban explains. "Will they like it? The Reva is very different in 2019." It's a touch aromatically coiled from its recent bottling, taking plenty of time and air to unfold scents of blackcurrants, peppermint patty, charcuterie, coffee beans and brown sugar. The full-bodied palate has a strong spine of refreshing acidity and plush, velvety tannins to balance its depth of flavor, and it offers a beautiful flourish of spice and floral tones that fan across the long finish. It's less ripe and hedonistic than in some vintages yet just as enjoyable! This will be released in the fall of 2023.

James Suckling calls the "serious" 95 pt.

The 2015 Leoville Poyferre is cut from the same cloth as the 2016, yet is more sexy, rounded and opulent. Notes of cassis, licorice, crushed rocks, lead pencil shavings and graphite all emerge from this unctuous, ripe, pedal-to-the-metal beauty that's absolutely loaded with fruit and texture. Reminding me of the 2003, yet only fresher, don't miss this beauty. It should be drinkable in 3-4 years and last for 3-4 decades. The blend of the 2015 is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc.

97 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2017)

The 2015 Léoville-Poyferré is spectacular. Inky, dense and explosive, the 2015 possesses off the chart richness, with soft contours, no hard edges and exceptional balance. All the elements are simply fused together. inky blue/purplish fruit, chocolate, new leather, blueberry jam, exotic spice and violet notes are all beautifully delineated throughout. Fresh, vibrant and totally sexy, Léoville-Poyferré is one of the wines of the vintage. Don't miss it! Tasted two times.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2018)

Following the style that this estate has now adopted, this is an ultrarich, concentrated wine. However its acidity and bright black-currant fruits contrast well with this solid base. Drink this impressive wine from 2026.

96 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Feb 2018)

A rich and intense red with blackberries, tar and spices. Black tea and blueberries. Full-bodied, very layered and multi-dimensional. Very long and flavorful. Such great texture. A dynamic and superb red. Drink in 2023.

96 points, James Suckling (Feb 2018)

Right off the first nose, this is young, generous, powerful yet subtle, nuanced, full of grace and power. Raspberry and blackberry fruits feel open and generous right now, so you could take advantage of this window and drink it over the next year or so with a carafe, but those tannins are menacing and hinting that pretty soon the fist will close around the fruit. Smoked cedar fills out the mid palate. Excellent. Harvest September 24 to October 10. 80% new oak.

96 points, Jane Anson (Sep 2021)

The 2015 Leoville Poyferre is medium to deep garnet colored. It needs a fair bit of coaxing to unlock notes of blueberry pie, kirsch, and blackcurrant pastilles, plus touches of garrigue, potpourri, and dusty soil. The medium-bodied palate is very tightly wound and youthful still, delivering a frame of firm, ripe tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and earthy.

96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)

Dark plum cake, blueberry reduction and açaí berry fruit tilts this to the exotic side of the ledger, with warm ganache, melted black licorice and tar notes providing the spine through the lush finish. Displays some serious latent grip, so there's no rush despite the showy fruit. Best from 2022 through 2040. 18,439 cases made.

2023 Domaine Clos de la Chapelle Pommard Grands Epenots 1er Cru (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Cote de Beaune, Burgundy, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

The 2023 Pommard “les Grands Épenots” from Domaine Clos de la Chapelle is a lovely wine this year, showing a black fruity personality on both the nose and palate. The beautiful bouquet wafts from the glass in a mix of black cherries, dark berries, black plums, coffee bean, gamebird, dark soil tones, a deft framing of new oak and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, soil-driven and very elegant for a young Pommard, with a beautiful core of black fruit, fine focus and grip, lovely balance and a long, ripely tannic and youthfully complex finish. This is going to be a simply beautiful bottle of wine once it is ready to drink!

"[Boudignon's] attention to detail in the winemaking process, precise viticulture, dedication and passion for the terroirs mark him as one of France's foremost vignerons and winemakers today." - Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate

Few winemakers have achieved such rapid ascent to cult status in the past two decades as Thibaud Boudignon. Once the long-time winemaker at Domaine de la Soucherie set out on his own, the critical and collectible aficionados took quick notice of his utterly uncompromising style and craftsmanship, and demand has been on an upward trajectory ever since. It's rare to find Boudignon's wines in any meaningful quantity, so tight are the allocations relative to their fanbase, so any time we get a chance at a parcel, especially at jaw-dropping pricing such as this, we jump at it without a second thought.

We just landed a small parcel of the newly released 2023 Clos Fremine, which will undoubtedly rack up future critical acclaim like every previous vintage, while a pair of 97-point renditions of the tête de cuvée Clos de la Hutte demonstrate clearly why Yohan Castaing declares, "[Boudignon] offers wines of purity, tension and finesse with virtually no rivals in Savennières." Showstopping terroir clarity and the potential for decades of cellar evolution put this line-up firmly in the company of France's savviest cellar-worthy white wine buys, but as you might guess, our quantities are very limited, so collectors would be wise to strike quickly at this opportunity.

Matured with 30% new oak, the 2021 Savennières Clos de la Hutte was made with grapes grown in clay topsoil with schists. It exhales a perfumed, precise bouquet with aromas of pineapple, lemon oil, spring flowers and spices. The full-bodied, seamless and layered, crystalline and pure, concentrated and mineral palate has a delicate core of fruit and a tense, saline finish. This pristine wine represents the essence of this great terroir.

97 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Jan 2024)

The 2021 Savennières Clos de la Hutte is never the most aromatic, but after a year in bottle, it is starting to reveal a little more of its true self—but only just. It remains a tight cloud of wine that blossoms in the mouth, seamless and round. It possesses excellent texture, substance and richness yet manages it in a not-heavy manner. Nectarine and tangerine fruit flavors linger on the textured finish, which holds the mouth with an assured clasp. This is still not yet ready to drink, but its quality is there to see. It just needs more time to come out from its hiding place; just be a little more patient, if you can.

Although it's ungenerous on the nose, the 2022 Savennières Clos de la Hutte is tender and generous in the mouth, welcoming you in. There's a cloud of gently handled fruit that embraces the palate, but it does so in an elegant and light-on-its-feet way. Texturally, it's seamless and coats the mouth with fine texture. In terms of flavor, expect salty, briny notes and citrus tones alongside a touch of spice and nutty oak on the finish. This is a wine that seems to be able to take a deep, calming breath and become more complete.

5 Sentidos Arroqueno Mezcal (750ml)

94AK

The Arroqueño from Tio Pedro Hernandez in Santa Catarina Minas does full justice to this mezcal maestro’s 50 years of distilling experience. A huge, wild-grown agave varietal, Arroqueño is somewhat obscure in the wider mezcal scene due to the amount of time it takes to mature (20 years or more) and the increasing scarcity of the plant itself, so this expression should be high on any mezcal fan’s list. It’s an undeniably classic example of clay pot mezcal from first scent to the finish. Big, plush agave sweetness introduces a deeply layered aromatic profile. Sweet, roasted root vegetables soon turn to the classic clay-pot notes of dense blackberry, blueberry, and currant, all of which is balanced by surprisingly fresh overtones of persimmon, spring pea shoots, fresh spring grass, and mint. A soft pillow of subtle minerality provides the foundation for everything. The weighty, round palate shows a more roasted agave character than the nose. It’s incredibly refined and inviting with no heat whatsoever, as those deep black and blue fruits from the nose pop with real authority. The fine mineral base also supports notes of blackberry leaf, lilac, and lavender on a gentle, medium-length finish. A pure, handcrafted beauty and a reference-point for its style and varietal.

2019 Quinta Nova Vinha Centenaria Referencia P29/P21 Red (750ml)
Touriga Nacional from Douro, Portugal
B-21 Top Recommendation

While Portugal's Douro Valley is obviously most famous its fortified port wines, the number of estates gaining serious attention for their dry whites and reds is growing with every vintage, and you can add Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo (or "Quinta Nova" for short) to that list.

This historic property is arguably one of the most visually dramatic places in the wine world (something that can be said for pretty much all of the Douro Valley), and their ancient, terraced vineyard blocks are home to approximately 130 massale selected vine species, rigorously documented, nursed, and cultivated from the estate's original vines planted over 200 years ago. Now under the direction of the Amorim family, the estate has seen a resurgence in investment over the past two decades, which has brought their wines up to a next-level quality and garnered the accompanying critical recognition.

This set of new arrivals is highlighted by the 2023 Reserva Terroir Red, a 92-point blend of Douro's most famous red grapes that showcases the classic winemaking and style of this famed region. The estate also hits the collectible sphere with impressive results both white and red. The 2023 Mirabilis Branco is a true field blend, composed of several varietals of very old vines, all co-planted in a handful of small plots. James Suckling and Luis Gutierrez both make Burgundian comparisons to this singular white wine with a "showy, large nose and personality." Finally, don't miss the "exceptional," 97-point 2019 Centenaria Referencia P29/P21. As the name implies, it's crafted from 100-year-old vines, mainly Touriga Nacional. "Wonderfully expressive, the fruit here is special," notes Wine Advocate's Mark Squires, "The wine is seductive rather than astringent. Perfect balance completes the picture here."

With winners in every price point and quality tier, Quinta Nova is a sure bet for long-time Portugal fans and novices alike to explore the unparalleled variety and style of this historic wine region.

97WA 95WE

The 2019 Vinha Centenária Referência P29/P21 is predominantly Touriga Nacional (75%) with the rest a field blend from centenarian vines that have a certain emphasis on Donzelinho Tinto (about 8% of the 80 some varieties). It was all aged for 12 months in new French oak and comes in at 14.4% alcohol. Wonderfully expressive, the fruit here is special, dripping with blue fruit nuances and well supported by structure. The wine is seductive rather than astringent. Perfect balance completes the picture here. This and the Roriz in this report are both exceptional. Pick your favorite. We will see which one wins in the end. There were 3,500 bottles produced. This will be released in the fall.

97 points, Mark Squires, Wine Advocate (Jul 2022)

A wine from two parcels, one of Touriga Nacional, the other from a field blend, this is impressively rich and dense. With a year in new wood, the wine is powerful, with juicy blackberry fruits and solid tannins, all suggesting it needs further aging. Drink from 2025.

2016 Chateau Leoville Poyferre (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Saint-Julien, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

Tasted on four separate occasions where this wine rated 97+, 98, 98, and 99, the 2016 Château Léoville-Poyferré is a brilliant bottle of wine and is certainly in the same league as the 2000, 2003, 2009, and 2010. Made from 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, and the balance Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, aged in 80% new oak, this brilliantly concentrated, full-bodied, opulent beast of a wine offers a heavenly bouquet of crème de cassis, blackcurrants, smoked earth, tobacco leaf, and ample crushed rocks. It’s certainly one of the most flamboyant and opulent wines in the vintage, yet it remains perfectly balanced, with masses of polished tannins, no hard edges, and a fabulous finish. It will be drinkable in 3-4 years yet keep for 3-4 decades.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2019)

An exceptional vintage, and an exceptional wine, punching in quality at the top of the appellation. Beginning to close down at five years old, the fingers of the tannins are closing in, but the bright succulent berry fruits are fully on display underneath and this has slate, cigar box, graphite, the full St Julien toolbox, precise but unyielding, supremely confident. 80% new oak. Harvest October 5 to 20.

98 points, Jane Anson (Jul 2021)

What a wine - such class from the excellent 2016 vintage. A touch of meatiness to the nose with bacon, green peppers and black pepper. So expansive in the mouth while at the same time seeming a little closed or perhaps on its way to closing down. Soft tannins, fine grained giving real presence but they're well integrated. Sophisticated and broad shouldered, this has a soft attack but giving such depth on the mid palate. Bold, powerful and well presented. A classic expression of claret and the St-Julien signature characteristics of minerality, graphite, slate, wet stone and juicy blackcurrant and plum. Closer to the style of 2010, still very tannic with the chalky, mineral texture standing out. Lovely definition and concentration all while being so refined. This will age for decades.

98 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Mar 2022)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Léoville Poyferré hits the ground running with intense cassis, violets, dark chocolate, menthol and fragrant earth notions complemented by nuances of cigar box and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is charged with energetic, super intense black fruit and floral layers, beautifully supported with super firm, ripe, grainy tannins and seamless freshness. This liquid is simply alive in the mouth, culminating in an epically long finish that will leave your mouth practically tingling. WOW!

97+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Issue # Interim - Nov 2018)

The 2016 Léoville-Poyferré is fabulous. Rich, ample and dramatic in bearing, the 2016 possesses striking intensity and vertical lift. The tannins certainly need at least a few years in bottle to soften, but there is so much to look forward to. Graphite, menthol, lavender and licorice complement the inky blue/purplish fruit beautifully. The bottled wine has a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon and less Merlot than the en primeur sample. I tasted the 2016 three times. It's least favorable showing was at the château. For readers and proprietors who think wines always taste better on site...they don't.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2019)

Richly layered, with a core of well-steeped plum, blackberry and black currant fruit flavors cruising through, flanked by ganache, sweet tobacco and warm tar notes. There's a plush, toasty coating but the wine's energy and nearly unbridled fruit will easily soak that up. A last echo of violet is further evidence of a lovely evolution ahead. Best from 2025 through 2040. 17,083 cases made.

97 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2019)

Wow. The power and depth to this wine is super with a full , fleshy palate. Yet, it’s so tight and integrated with panache and energy. Chewy tannins, yet seamless and melted into the wine. Extremely long and beautiful. Very polished now. This needs at least five to six years to resolve the steely tannins that run through this wine. Take a look from 2024. A blend of 61 per cent cabernet sauvignon, 27 per cent merlot, eight per cent merlot and four per cent cabernet franc.

"...[Chavy] is making brilliant wines that transcend their status." - Neal Martin, Vinous

We still can't believe our great fortune to have established Domaine Chavy-Chouet as a direct-import relationship last year, as the 2023s have proven to be incredibly smart buys that, as Neal Martin implies above, far outpace their price points across the board.

The exceptional village-level crus from Meursault and Puligny are are top-class overachievers from Romaric Chavy, who "continues to impress" as noted by Burghound's Allen Meadows. The true quiet genius of Chavy, however, is readily on display in his range of benchmark-quality 1er crus.

The "high-class Genevrières" leads the way in Jasper Morris' Inside Burgundy reviews, a 94-point expression of a hallowed terroir often seen on labels at twice this price. "Clean yet complex, with real intensity, this is a cut above," he declares of the equally stunning, 94-point 1er Cru Les Folatières from Puligny. For those seeking the vintage's best sleeper stars, look no further than the 93-point 1er Cru Murgers des Dents de Chien, a textbook rendition of a site that is gaining more and more collectible cachet with each passing vintage.

In a market, where true values are rarely found at all points on the price spectrum, this range from Chavy-Chouet bucks the trend and delivers undeniable class and sophistication at unbeatable, domaine-direct pricing.

Fresh lemon and lime, a slight reductive note on the nose, this has the right backbone and tensile qualities, with the requisite delicacy of detail. Very long, spring flowers in the mix, a bit of wholemeal, saline, complex and steadily growing. High class Genevrières. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted Oct 2024.

94 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy (Dec 2024)

(from vines in Genevrières Dessous planted in 1943). A naturally exotic nose speaks of jasmine tea, the essence of pear and cool citrus wisps. The sleeker, though not richer, middle weight flavors exude a subtle minerality on the lightly lemon-tinged finale that exhibits even better length. Classy juice with fine development potential.

92JM 91BH

Pale lemon, plumper in style than the Genevrières but perhaps less character. A cheerful raft of white fruit across the palate with the correct density but it is very tight at the moment, needs aeration. Drink from 2029-2035. Tasted Oct 2024.

92 points, Jasper Morris, Inside Burgundy (Dec 2024)

A pretty mix is comprised by notes of mostly white-fleshed fruit along with background nuances of acacia blossom and spice. The very rich, even opulent, medium weight flavors possess a round and caressing mouthfeel while delivering solid length on the balanced, clean and agreeably dry finale. Like several wines in the range, this would benefit from developing more depth so a few years of keeping are in order.

2023 Domaine Clos de la Chapelle Volnay Clos de la Chapelle 1er Cru (750ml)

94JG

The 2023 Clos de la Chapelle is an utterly stunning young bottle of Volnay. The wine shows beautiful transparency in its aromatic constellation of red plums, red and black cherries, pigeon, raw cocoa, a very complex base of soil tones, violets, peonies, distant bonfire and a deft framing of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, supremely elegant and shows off marvelous depth of fruit at the core, with lovely soil signature, ripe, fine-grained tannins, seamless balance and a long, precise and nascently complex finish.

2021 Beaulieu Vineyards Georges de Latour Private Reserve (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Today's private offer needs little to no introduction. The 2021 Georges de Latour Private Reserve from Beaulieu is another major milestone in one of the most legednary track records in Napa Valley history.

"The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour is outrageously beautiful. A wine of statuesque build and class, the 2021 represents another major step forward for BV." - Antonio Galloni,Vinous

Following on the heels of star-studded vintages like 2018 and 2019, the 2021 is another example of how this iconic estate continues to evolve and refine even its flagship bottling, a wine that could rest on its laurels, if ever there were one. Antonio Galloni asserts "BV is arguably one of the most improved estates in Napa Valley over the last few years" under winemaker Trevor Durling, and the Georges de Latour is exhibit A. Shorter maceration times and fewer barrels used during vinification have tempered the wine's famously stern and tannic character, but this by no means indicates that its famous longevity is in question. Instead, the 2021 Georges de Latour offers collectors a level of sophistication and elegance that simply adds one more dimension to one of the world's great Cabernets. With three 98-point scores carrying the critical line, the 2021 "does everything right" according to Jeb Dunnuck, and avid collectors of this Napa legend will be thrilled to have it in their cellars.

98JD 98V 98JS 98D 97JA

Lastly, the flagship 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Georges De Latour Private Reserve is in the same ballpark as the 2019 and is an incredibly elegant yet concentrated 2021 that does everything right. Purple-hued, with ample cassis, wild sage, graphite, and darker chocolate-like aromatics, it picks up a Graves-like gravelly earth character with air and is full-bodied, has ripe, polished tannins, beautiful overall balance, and a great finish. As with many of the top 2021s, it s a touch reserved and closed and needs 4-5 years of bottle age, but will drink well for 30 years.

98+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2023)

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour is outrageously beautiful. A wine of statuesque build and class, the 2021 represents another major step forward for BV. Black cherry, plum, spice, new leather, menthol, mocha and gravel soar from the glass. This is an especially refined vintage for this flagship wine. Here, too, there is plenty of tannin, but it is not anywhere near as perceptible as it was in the past. Shorter macerations and gentler overall winemaking, including fewer lots vinified in barrel, have elevated the Georges meaningfully.

98 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Dec 2023)

Intense aromas of iodine, blackcurrants, cedar, sandalwood and mint follow through to a medium to full body with silky tannins that spread across the palate and expand in a balanced and harmonized way. Hints of chocolate and fruit at the end. Some tar. Drinkable but better in a few years. Try in 2027 and beyond.

98 points, James Suckling (Jan 2024)

What a spectacular showing of this iconic wine in the terrific 2021 vintage. Deep ruby with a purple hue, it just exudes elegance and statesmanship. It has a noble quality to it that begins with its precise and lifted bouquet of dried rose petals, kirsch, Blackberry, and cassis fruit interlaced with sagebrush, sandalwood, and toasty cedarwood. Perfectly medium to full-bodied, showcasing a dazzling spectrum of silken red and black fruits redolent of strawberry, cherry, plum, and blackberry atop a substantial bed of taut, mineral-tinged tannins. A spine of racy acidity lifts the panoply of fruit, and the finish reveals a plethora of wild herbs, cast iron notes, pastille, and white pepper, nuanced by rich, toasty oak infused with toffee and vanilla bean. It is one of the most satisfying and immediately enjoyable expressions of the Georges de Latour Private Reserve in the last decade. Produced by Trevor Durling, the fourth winemaker to follow in the footsteps of the great André Tchelistcheff.

98 points, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter (Apr 2024)

Excellent quality, full of flavour, balanced, cassis, liqourice and cocoa bean, espresso, sage, drawn out through the palate. A wonderful example of an intense, concentrated BV, full of estate signature. Tasted twice. 95% new oak for ageing, 3.64ph, harvest September 25 to October 13.

"This is an extraordinary vintage that will go down in record books as one of the all-time greats." - Jeb Dunnuck

When Bordeaux's 2022 vintage premiered three years ago, there was some uncertainty as to how the wines would play out from such a hot, dry growing season, one which surely promised wines of massive power, ripeness, and weight. Would it be too much of a good thing?

As it appeared then, and as it has turned out now that the wines are releasing to market, it's an extraordinary campaign among the best of the century. As Dunnuck observes, "Now that the wines are in bottles, it’s clear they have fully lived up to the early hype—and not just at the high end. The 2022s are deep, layered, and concentrated while staying beautifully balanced, light on their feet, and elegant."

Today's selection presents an incredible treasure trove that showcases the vintage's greatest features at every price in the spectrum, leaving no doubt as to how good 2022 Bordeaux really is.

99JD 98JS 97JA 97D

The 2022 Château Lynch-Bages is based on 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, and 3% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Its inky purple hue is followed by a sensational Pauillac that has a blockbuster (and classic Lynch-Bages) style in its darker currants, smoke tobacco, lead pencil, and crushed stone-driven aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied, powerful, massively concentrated 2022 that has a dense, layered mid-palate, velvety tannins, flawless balance, and a rare mix of power and elegance. This is a château that’s clearly firing on all cylinders, and this magical beauty will need a decade (or more) to hit the early stages of its prime drinking window. Don't miss it!

99 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2025)

A terrific Lynch from a hot vintage with blackcurrants, mint, dried lavender, graphite and thyme on the nose and palate. Medium- to full-bodied, it shows fantastic tannins with a lovely texture that reminds me of cashmere, becoming slightly chewy in the finish. Give this four to five years of bottle age. Try after 2028.

98 points, James Suckling (Jan 2025)

Exceptional, liquorice, slate, graphite, pumice stone tannins and a salt scrape on the finish that is key to balancing out this ripe full bodied Lynch. Great stuff, with ageing potential in spades. High alcohol for a Pauillac no question, but this walks the line with grace. 75% new oak for ageing, Nicolas Labenne winemaker.

97 points, Jane Anson (Mar 2025)

Ripe and generous on the palate, this is chewy, crunchy and alive. Ripe fruit is there - chewy and sweet black currants and cherries - fleshy and filling - as is concentration of flavours, but there's a delicate layering of elements which builds the wine on the palate giving power but also focus and precision. Still feels a little shy, with tension there in the funnelling of flavours and a relatively crisp finish but this will elongate in time. Cool blueberries, wet stones, pencil lead and graphite give the mineral touches. No overt heat, oak or spice which also is excellent. One for the long haul. Built with ageing in mind I think.

Hampden Estate Great House 2025 Rum (750ml)
From Wakefield, Trelawney, Jamaica

"If you’re a fan of Jamaica’s most authentic rums, this is a must-have."

- Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

Among rum fanatics, the Hampden name instills a sense of reverence and, you might even say, joy thanks to their incredible, single-estate expressions that are known the world over. The estate's storied history as a sugar plantation and distillery dates back 265 years, but it was only in 2010 that they began aging their rums on site, and only in 2018 that they began bottling under their own label. In that brief span of time, the estate's official bottlings have become some of the most coveted and desired in the rum scene, and their annual Great House release, inaugurated in 2019, is a day that hardcore tiki heads circle on the calendar.

Although we've endured a bit of a Hampden absence for a while, we're thrilled to announce their triumphant return to B-21 with the Great House 2025 at razor-sharp, market-leading pricing. The 2025 is the first edition to be composed of four distinct Hampden marks and the first to include the extremely rare C<>H, their second-highest-ester mark. "This year’s rendition truly shows all the facets of Hampden’s heart and soul in one outstanding blend," notes B-21 spirits buyer Andrew Kitz. Bright, ripe, aromatic tropical fruits, heavy-duty industrial funk and everything in between can all be found in this "stunningly layered, complex, and endlessly intriguing profile."

Jamaican rum is a category unto itself, and Hampden occupies a very special place in that sphere, so when we say this is a limited release that's not to be missed, we surely mean it.

95AK

As an unrepentant Hampden fanatic, I’m admittedly biased here, but the 2025 Great House is everything I was hoping it would be prior to release. This year’s rendition truly shows all the facets of Hampden’s heart and soul in one outstanding blend. Starting with a 40% base of their light-ester LFCH mark, the blending team then climbs the ester ladder with 20% each of HLCF (400-600 g/HLPA), HGML (1000-1100 g/HLPA), and C<>H (1300-1400 g/HLPA), all of which results in a stunningly layered, complex, and endlessly intriguing profile. No surprise – the aromas fill the room with everything from fermenting pineapple, furniture polish, new rubber, and chocolate-chip banana bread to teriyaki, Werther’s Original butterscotch candies, and ginger biscuits. But it’s not over by a long shot, as faint touches of diesel engine, juicy tangerine, Christmas cake, Jamaican jerk spices, and treacle all emerge against a background of wood and dark cherries. The palate is exactly what you’d expect from the blend composition. The medium weight and exceptionally balanced mouthfeel shows just a hint of heat, with plenty of room for flavors of dark molasses, milk chocolate, cooked tropical fruits, more of those Werther’s Originals, apple butter, and apple pie filling. The barrel regimen is evident but restrained in notes cinnamon and brown sugar, earthy wood tones, clove, anise, and cola, all concluding in a funky, industrial finish that goes on for who knows how long. If you’re a fan of Jamaica’s most authentic rums, this is a must-have.

Lynch-Bages is pure magic in 2019....A towering Pauillac, the 2019 Lynch Bages will make a great addition to any cellar…Don't miss it.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Savvy Bordeaux collectors won't need convincing – the thrilling 100pt. 2019 Chateau Lynch-Bages continues this estate's epic run of exceptional quality, elegantly balancing concentrated lush dark fruit with grippy, mouth-coating tannins on "an extremely persistent, almost Lafite-like finish" according to Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson who declares it "a great Lynch-Bages of the modern era," offered at an equally spectacular value and delivered ex-Chateau in original wooden cases of six.

Owned by the Cazes family for nearly a century, visitors to Chateau Lynch-Bages encounter an almost fairytale-like village complete with a Michelin-starred restaurant and luxury hotel, its stunning new contemporary winemaking facility designed by noted architects and sons of the masterful architect I.M. Pei, creator of the once controversial glass Louvre pyramid in Paris. Spanning 100 hectares planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller parcels of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, the vineyards are located on a range of terroirs across Pauillac, from close to the Chateau on the gravelly Bages plateau to bordering St. Julien next to Chateau Pichon Lalande, the estate's vines for the Grand Vin averaging 30 years of age with some as old as 60 years. Under the direction of fourth generation Jean-Charles Cazes, the powerful 2019 Chateau Lynch-Bages was aged for 18 months in 75% new French oak, revealing intense, dark Cabernet aromatics described as "gorgeous from the start" by the Wine Spectator's James Molesworth, embodying the hedonistic Lynch-Bages style with a core of fresh opulent fruit layered over rich, ripe tannins that according to Decanter's Georgina Hindle give "no doubt that this is going to age slowly and for many decades."

98JD 97WS 97JS 96WA 96V 96WE

One of the finest vintages I've ever tasted from this address, the 2018 Château Lynch-Bages has everything you look for in a great wine: incredible aromatics, richness without weight, perfect balance, and a purity of fruit that's just about off the charts. Dense purple, it reveals a glorious perfume of blackcurrants and blackberry fruits, a deep, unctuous mouthfeel, building tannins, and a complex array of cedar pencil, tobacco, wood smoke, and chocolate. A true blockbuster in every sense, with masses of fruit and tannins as well as moderate acidity, it will probably merit a triple-digit score in a decade and is a 50+-year wine from this team.

98+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

Vibrant, with a violet and cassis lead-in that then expands to include steeped black cherry and plum fruit as well as extra savory, iron and licorice root notes. Nice latent grip too, with a mouthwatering tug of earth at the very end. The fruit is so vibrant, it's a tease now, but there's structure here for the long haul, so be patient. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2025 through 2040.

97 points, James Molesworth, Wine Spectator (Mar 2021)

Aromas of blackberries, cloves, licorice, dried leaves, graphite and black olives. It’s full-bodied with firm, tight tannins. Structured and tannic with beautiful austerity and a long, mineral and layered finish. The tannins grow on the palate. Try from 2026.

97 points, James Suckling (Mar 2021)

Composed of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc and 3% Petit Verdot, the 2018 Lynch-Bages was aged in 75% new barriques. Deep garnet-purple in color, it soars out of the glass with a magnificently expressive nose of blueberry compote, black cherry preserves and blackcurrant pastilles, plus suggestions of dark chocolate, licorice, tar and violets with a waft of hoisin. The medium to full-bodied palate is just as impactful as the nose, coating the mouth with juicy black berry and spicy layers, supported by firm, grainy tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long with a refreshing earthiness coming through at the end.

96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2021)

An utterly fabulous wine, the 2018 Lynch-Bages captures all of the richness and generosity that make the year so appealing, and yet doesn’t stray too far from its classic feel. Rose petal, lavender, spice, sweet red berry fruit and mint are all beautifully lifted in the glass. Racy and silky to the core, the 2018 is a real head-turner from the very first taste. All the elements fall into place effortlessly. Readers will have a very hard time keeping their hands off this jewel of a wine.

96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Mar 2021)

The Lynch-Bages style is unmistakeable in this wine’s richness and the density of its structure and tannins. In addition it conveys a great sense of style, restrained power and opulence. Drink this wine from 2027.

"Acknowledging that 2019 is already a heralded vintage, the salient question is whether it represents the summit of the 2018, 2019 and 2020 triumvirate. 'Yes' is the answer. I have always felt that is the case." - Neal Martin, Vinous

Of course, you may or may not agree with Martin in terms of 2019 place in the "trifecta," but it's undeniable that is a truly spectacular Bordeaux vintage that has more than lived up to its day-one hype since the wine's have hit the market, hit collector's cellars, and found their way into the glasses of impatient enthusiasts. Best of all, pricing has always been highly favorable compared to 2018 and 2020 (to say nothing of 2022), so the 2019s have also been some of the sharpest collectible buys on the market from the get-go and remain so today.

The 2019 Château Lynch-Bages is stunningly good, and it's going to be interesting to compare this to the 2018 over the coming decades. Based on 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, brought up in 75% new French oak, its dense purple hue is followed by an incredible bouquet of pure crème de cassis, freshly sharpened cedar pencil, spring flowers, smoke, and graphite, with an almost liqueur of rocks-like minerality. A massive, incredibly concentrated Lynch-Bages, Jean-Charles has hit a home run in the vintage, and this sensational wine has building, perfect tannins, insane purity, and a finish that won't quit. It has the purity, finesse, balance, and depth to offer pleasure not only today but to evolve for 40 to 50 years. Smart money will hide these for a good 7-8 years, but wow, what a wine. Bravo.

100 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Lynch Bages is every bit as magnificent from bottle as it was from barrel, if not moreso. What a wine! Towering and vertical in its bearing, the 2019 is a total stunner. There is plenty of Lynch Bages charm, but what distinguishes the 2019 most is its spine of tannin and energy. Time in the glass brings out sweet red cherry, plum, blood orange and pomegranate and mint. The 2019 is a great, great, great Lynch Bages. It reminds me of the epic 1989, but with the youthful grip of this vintage. A towering Pauillac, the 2019 Lynch Bages will make a great addition to any cellar.

A superb Lynch Bages that grabs you and carries you through the palate, slowly edging forward. Poised with a ton of slate and pencil lead on the finish, this is pure Pauillac, just so precise and full of character, so much grip, it's classic with a mouthwatering finish, feels profound but throroughly approachable. 75% new oak, 3.73ph. First vintage in new winery.

One of my favourite wines of the vintage, this is a wonderful example of high definition winemaking but still offering plenty of Pauillac swagger. Smells dark and slightly savoury, full of black fruit and toasted aromas. Bright and lively on the palate with clarity and precision to the berry fruit, shining and clear with juicy, mouthwatering acidity - so much energy in the glass. Chalky, graphite-laced tannins fill the mouth, giving structure and clear terroir markers with a lingering minerality on the finish. Perfectly weighted with incredible delectability and drinkability. Persistent with a long finish. Superb effort.

2 barrels, supplied in must. Pale lemon. Again, strikingly elegant with just a light touch of coconut. Elegant but magisterial, with little herbal subtleties to find on the nose, and a lovely and ever-changing fruit profile which keeps extending. Effortless density but Eric thinks a bit late picked. A thick concentration of yellow fruits behind. Works well for those who like the more sumptuous approach. Drink from 2029-2036. Tasted Oct 2024.

The 2023 Chassagne-Montrachet La Romanée 1er Cru is initially quite reticent and takes time to unfold on the nose, eventually offering lemon thyme, crushed stone and Puligny-like malic scents. The palate is well balanced with a slightly honeyed texture on the entry, notes of nectarine, praline and stem ginger toward the persistent finish. This is one to watch.

91-93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Jan 2025)

A super-fresh nose features vaguely exotic notes of spiced tea, apple compote, white peach and a whiff of citrus confit. The sleek, even glossy, medium weight plus flavors aren't especially dense though they do exude evident minerality on the very dry and youthfully austere finish that exhibits a touch of bitter citrus character. While built to repay up to a decade of keeping, this should be approachable relatively young. *Outstanding*

6 barrels from several different sources. Attractive mid yellow. A little bit of sunshine while staying fresh. This is very even handed, with a fine tensile strength, once again the mineral aspect at the finish, and considerable length. Some other versions could dig deeper. Drink from 2028-2033. Tasted Oct 2024.

A whiff of the exotic can be found on the blend of both white and yellow peach, passion fruit and a variety of floral wisps. The rich, generously proportioned and bigger-bodied flavors possess a sappy texture as well as even more evident minerality on the bone-dry finale. This could also use more depth but that should reasonably occur as Folatières almost always ages well.
