When Bordeaux's 2022 vintage premiered three years ago, there was some uncertainty as to how the wines would play out from such a hot, dry growing season, one which surely promised wines of massive power, ripeness, and weight. Would it be too much of a good thing?

As it appeared then, and as it has turned out now that the wines are releasing to market, it's an extraordinary campaign among the best of the century. As Dunnuck observes, "Now that the wines are in bottles, it’s clear they have fully lived up to the early hype—and not just at the high end. The 2022s are deep, layered, and concentrated while staying beautifully balanced, light on their feet, and elegant."

Today's selection presents an incredible treasure trove that showcases the vintage's greatest features at every price in the spectrum, leaving no doubt as to how good 2022 Bordeaux really is.

Licorice with tapenade, cassis, roasted spices and a touch of bergamot and pencil shavings. Full-bodied and structured, this has filigreed tannins in a very dusty, almost powdery form. Really youthful and long. Juicy and compact with spot-on balance. 79% cabernet sauvignon, 21% merlot. Give it at least three years to unwind and develop complexity.

Rose buds, cassis, crayon, mint leaf, graphite, black tea, this is full of classic Pauillac character in a vintage where that is not a given. The 2022 Grand Puy Lacoste, observed out of barrel, offers a more sensual and generous bouquet than previous vintages, with blackberry, bilberry and cedar scents emerging from the glass with a hint of pencil box underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, showing more structure than it did from barrel, which is precisely what you want from this Pauillac estate. Tobacco and graphite notes towards the finish linger beautifully in classical style. This is a very impressive wine that will mature with panache and stature.

This version shows the floral side of the vintage, with a vibrant mix of iris, violet and rose petal notes leading the way, backed by a core of pure and racy red and black currant preserves. There's a well-integrated singed cedar note running along its flanks and a long beam of iron driving the finish. Textbook. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2026 through 2042. 10,000 cases made.

The grand vin here is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot, and the élevage was in 75% new oak for 16 to 18 months. This possesses a gorgeous nose, one which seems to evoke the rich and dark fruit of the vintage as well as the fresh and gravelly terroir of this corner of Pauillac, with fragrant notes of mint, bay leaf and dried flowers laid over charming dark cherry notes and crushed gravel, all dressed with little notes of sandalwood and toast. This is all about the pure, fresh and charming fruit, with damson, red plum and black pepper on the palate, the fine textural quality of the palate resting on an imposing and ripe but dry and tightly knit tannic structure. A beautiful example of what can be achieved on the western gravels of the Grand Puy, this is an impressive vintage from Grand-Puy-Lacoste, one built for the cellar;come back to this one in 10 or 15 years. Tasted three times. The alcohol is 14% on the label.

Vibrant floral scents on the nose - roses and violets with blackcurrants, dried herbs and chocolate. Smooth and round on the palate, this has an excellent weight in the mouth - silky tannins, fleshy cherry fruit, cushioning acidity and subtle spice all combines to give such a delicious mouthful of wine that feels cool and classic which wasn't easy in 2022. It has the Pauillac power but with real charm and drinkability. Well constructed and characterful with mineral markers in the wet stone and graphite as well as tobacco, tar, clove and espresso. I loved this wine En Primeur and it has totally delivered after ageing. A joy to drink and this will also age supremely well.

The 2022 Grand-Puy-Lacoste has turned out nicely in bottle, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis and plums mingled with notions of rose petal, tobacco leaf and pencil shavings. It’s full-bodied with layers of ultra-fine, silky tannins that elegantly coat your palate, allowing the juicy and vibrant fruit to shine. Delicate and pristine, yet compact with lots of energy and power to uncover in the coming years. It lasts for minutes and is delicious now. The purity of fruit is really impressive. 60% cabernet sauvignon, 32% merlot, 4% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot. 50% new oak 15% old oak and 35% concrete amphorae. Try after 2027.

The flagship from this estate, the 2020 Château Pontet-Canet is a beauty based on 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and 4% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, brought up in 50% new oak, with 35% in amphora. Deep purple-hued with a great nose of dark currants, plums, tobacco leaf, and truffly earth, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a layered, seamless mouthfeel and a great finish. The higher Merlot content here really shows in its overall sexy, supple, seamless style, and while this already offers pleasure, it's going to be one for the ages as well.

No second wine, as has been true for the past half-decade at Pontet Canet. First full vintage for Mathieu Bessonnet who replaced the previous long-term director Jean-Michel Comme in 2020. 45% new oak barrels, 15% one year, 40% in amphoras.

Composed of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot, the 2020 Pontet-Canet is deep garnet-purple colored. It needs a lot of swirling and aeration to coax out notes of crushed blackcurrants, blueberry compote, and candied violets, leading to suggestions of allspice, fertile loam, kirsch, and dark chocolate with a touch of Indian spices. The medium-bodied palate delivers a firm backbone of grainy tannins with loads of bright, perfumed red and black fruits and seamless acidity, finishing long and fragrant. This is stunning.

Dark chocolate, bramble tones, not overly floral or fruity with some cedar and cinnamon notes. Lovely high acidity straight away, forward, bright and energetic with lovely crunchy blue fruit on the palate but creamy textured tannins giving a round and complete mouthful. Nothing feels overdone, this is quietly seductive and confident but not at all showing off. I love the minerality and the graphite grip with plum and black cherry and tons of slate, liquorice and menthol freshness. Long finish, slowly expansive, building and growing from start to finish showing an impressive structure overall. Nicely constructed, charming still with the Pauillac touch. A great Pontet - immediately seductive and enjoyable with a long ageing potential.

Our visit to Domaine Henri Gouges earlier this year was revelatory in more ways than one. First, it showed us some of the best 2023 reds we've come across, indicating that, at the top end, this is a super-classic vintage for Burgundy purists to take special interest in. Second, it showed us that Gouges is back on top in a big way. This Nuits-St-Georges benchmark "hits hard" in 2023 according to Andrew, with a standout range that eclipses even some previously acclaimed vintages, in his opinion. 

The village Nuits is always an "energetic gem that does everything it's supposed to do" in fine fashion, while the 1er crus simply shine, in our humble opinion. The 2023 Clos des Porrets St-Georges is "an indisputably classic 2023 NSG 1er cru in every way," while the Pruliers "takes this site to the level of more lauded crus like its stablemate, the Vaucrains." Speaking of which, this stellar cru produced a potential 96-pointer that Jasper Morris calls "Immediately classy on the nose from this great terroir. Not hugely open, but very fine, and this continues on the palate. A sense of refinement despite the level of energy." Finally, the Les St-Georges makes a fine case for this vineyard as the best in the appellation (perhaps deserving of grand cru status?). Burghound describes the 2023 as "super-sleek, intense and detailed, mineral-driven and muscular," showing all the pedigree of this hallowed site in a vintage that allows it to shine in every facet. 

Needless to say, when we were offered our allocation, we jumped on every last bottle, so now our Burgundy collectors can stock up on some of the sharpest collectible gems of the vintage at superb, market-leading pricing.

I’ve been a Gouges fan for a long time, but recent vintages have been hit or miss. In 2023, the domaine hits hard. Across the board, these were some of the most perfumed, delineated wines we've tasted yet this year, and the structural and textural finesse are almost unbelievable for Nuits-St-Georges. Like all Gouges' 2023s, the Clos is exceptionally refined on the both the nose and the palate. There’s plenty of aromatic depth in the red plum and black raspberry fruit, while the terroir plays out with a fine underlying limestone signature, though not quite as upfront as in the other 1er crus. Very subtle hints of game, anise, and camphor add nascent complexity. The palate is exceptionally balanced with sleek, persistent structure that lifts the fruit and the terroir in equal fashion. In short, purity abounds at every level – vintage, village, and vineyard. It's an indisputably classic 2023 NSG 1er cru in every way.

This iconic Meursault domaine, spearheaded by the legendary Pierre Matrot, is now in its third generation under Pierre's granddaughters Elsa and Adele, who are shepherding it into a thrilling new era, as our Burgundy team discovered last spring during their visit.

The sisters have undertaken a subtle yet remarkable transformation of the domaine's style, moving away from the more solidly built, heavily oaked wines of their father, Thierry, and toward a more nuanced expression of terroir signature with very judicious use of the barrel. The results are vividly compelling wines that convey the domaine's prized holdings in crystal-clear fashion. The 2023 vintage favored Chardonnay in the Côte de Beaune, and Matrot's wines also capture the balanced brilliance of the vintage perfectly.

The treasured 1ers crus of Puligny Combettes and Meursault Perrieres surely turned out some absolutely thrilling renditions in 2023, the former "super-sleek, delicious, and appealingly tension-filled" and the latter showing 95-point potential according to both Martin and Morris for its "cool, pure and beautifully layered" personality. The sleeper star, however, is the "marvelous" Puligny 1er Cru Chalumeaux, showing 96-point potential from Morris.

It's great to see such an iconic domaine showing this level of potential and promise as it enters a new era, and based on what we saw from them earlier this year, Matrot's best days may yet be ahead of us.

The 2023 Meursault Les Chevalières, which used to be sold exclusively in the US, is a level up from the Village, with a lovely mineralité underlying dried honey and light lemon verbena scents. The palate is well balanced with a fine line of acidity, more tension than the Meursault Village and a delineated, quite vibrant finish. Excellent.

Our winery-direct relationship with Brezza once again pays huge dividends with the release of the highly anticipated 2021 single crus. By now, this modern benchmark vintage is on everyone's radar, and Brezza has undoubtedly captured the 2021 magic in their entire range, as our tasting last October confirmed. The smash hits of Sarmassa and Cannubi are towering efforts that weave together incredible terroir character and expert winemaking for collectible Barolos of the highest order.

Brezza's Cannubi holding is a 1.4-hectare parcel in the very heart of the cru, so it comes as no surprise that the 2021 "shows all the class and pedigree that has made this site famous" according to Kerin O'Keefe, whose own 97-point score is eclipsed by a 98 points from Wine Enthusiast, which describes it as "a profound testament to Nebbiolo's nobility ... completeness in a glass, a wine that carries both power and finesse with equal measure. The warm micro-climate of Sarmassa endows the wine with deep but balanced personality, with ideal phenolic ripeness being a typical hallmark of the vineyard. This 98-point stunner is "a wine that speaks of place with crystalline clarity," giving telltale signatures of the cru in every drop. Kerin O'Keefe likewise calls it "a gorgeous wine and great expression of this site," and there's no doubt that the magnificent 2021 vintage has turned out a truly special rendition of this long-time B-21 favorite. Finally, Brezza's prized south-facing plots in Sarmassa, Vigna Bricco, produced a marvelous Riserva in the acclaimed 2019 vintage that "brings together all the elements that make these wines so appealing, namely the elegance of Cannubi and then structure of the Sarmassa," according to Antonio Galloni. A concentrated, impressively built Riserva with stunning underlying tension, the 2019 is a hallmark cellar Barolo, made for a long evolution.

As thrilling as this trio is right now, you'll certainly want to stash bottles away and forget them for a while, because the rewards are sure to be as compelling as almost anything you'll find in these epic vintages, once the wines have time to reach their full potential.

The organic Brezza 2019 Barolo Riserva Sarmassa Vigna Bricco is a beautiful wine with a hint of evolution, a touch of sweetness, a dab of licorice and a lot of inner balance. It reveals a medium-plus texture with a soft, velvety finish. The Riserva sees the same winemaking process as the other wines in this range (with 10 months in stainless steel and 24 months in Slavonian oak casks), but it sees an extended 36 months in bottle. That's the main difference. Fruit comes from a south-facing slope, and that's what gives it more overall heft and concentration. Production is 2,584 bottles and 199 magnums.

The 2019 Barolo Riserva Sarmassa Vigna Bricco brings together all the elements that make these wines so appealing, namely the elegance of Cannubi and then structure of the Sarmassa. It's a combination that works so well. Crushed rose petal, mint, cinnamon, blood orange, kirsch and sage all lend notable complexity to this full-bodied, authoritative Barolo. The huge, building finish, with its alluring inner perfume, is a thing of real beauty. The Bricco bottling is a blend of south-facing parcels within Sarmassa.

Brezza’s Riserva hails from a 0.4ha, south-facing vineyard. When there is snow, this is where it melts first, which has long been an indication of a superior exposure. Aged two years longer in bottle than the annata Sarmassa, the 2019 has already settled into a captivatingly mature bouquet of leather, smoky black tea, and savoury forest floor. Spicy and robust, the palate demonstrates youthful vigour with tight-knit red berries. Confidently extracted, steely tannins should loosen at a measured pace, allowing for a long and rewarding drinking arch.

When we tasted the High N' Wicked Kentucky Straight Bourbon earlier this year, it was clear from the get-go that everything about this whiskey was done with pure pleasure in mind. After 14 years in new #4 char oak, High N' Wicked gave the 96-point The Judge an addition six months in Hungarian Tokaji dessert wine casks. Ramping up the intensity, the 94-point The Jury saw an extra year in the new #4 char barrel, finishing in a premium ex-Madeira cask. Nothing added and nothing chill-filtered out, these are luxurious, altogether singular expressions that we seldom see in the bourbon category.

This whiskey was distilled in Tennessee and aged 15 years, including a year finishing in ex- Madeira casks, and bottled at cask strength. All that yields rich vanilla and red fruit aromas, and a citric, mouthwatering palate that suggests lemon peel and cranberry layered with toasted almond and oak, drying to leather and baking spices on the exhale. Limited release.

After achieving a staggering twenty-seven 100-point scores during his tenure with winemaker Manfred Krankl at Sine Qua Non, Jim Binns established Andremily in 2012 on the outskirts of Ventura County, just south of Santa Barbara, naming it after his two children, Andrew and Emily. Sourcing grapes from top Santa Barbara vineyards including the legendary Bien Nacido and White Hawk, Jim has also expanded his use of estate-grown fruit since his recent purchase of the 39-acre Slide Hill Vineyard in Edna Valley, a move that has had "a profound impact on the wine" according to Galloni.

With that classic Andremily richness and breadth, it stays flawlessly balanced, has good acidity, and a great finish. It’s a stunning white that readers should snatch up. I love it today, yet it should have 4-6 years of prime drinking, possibly longer. But why wait?

Our visit to Domaine Henri Gouges earlier this year was revelatory in more ways than one. First, it showed us some of the best 2023 reds we've come across, indicating that, at the top end, this is a super-classic vintage for Burgundy purists to take special interest in. Second, it showed us that Gouges is back on top in a big way. This Nuits-St-Georges benchmark "hits hard" in 2023 according to Andrew, with a standout range that eclipses even some previously acclaimed vintages, in his opinion. 

The village Nuits is always an "energetic gem that does everything it's supposed to do" in fine fashion, while the 1er crus simply shine, in our humble opinion. The 2023 Clos des Porrets St-Georges is "an indisputably classic 2023 NSG 1er cru in every way," while the Pruliers "takes this site to the level of more lauded crus like its stablemate, the Vaucrains." Speaking of which, this stellar cru produced a potential 96-pointer that Jasper Morris calls "Immediately classy on the nose from this great terroir. Not hugely open, but very fine, and this continues on the palate. A sense of refinement despite the level of energy." Finally, the Les St-Georges makes a fine case for this vineyard as the best in the appellation (perhaps deserving of grand cru status?). Burghound describes the 2023 as "super-sleek, intense and detailed, mineral-driven and muscular," showing all the pedigree of this hallowed site in a vintage that allows it to shine in every facet. 

Needless to say, when we were offered our allocation, we jumped on every last bottle, so now our Burgundy collectors can stock up on some of the sharpest collectible gems of the vintage at superb, market-leading pricing.

Bottled in July. A bright ruby purple. The bouquet has a fine ripeness to the fruit, less heady than Chaines Carteaux. From a bright fresh red fruit at the front of the palate to something a little richer and darker behind, along with a peppery finish. Fine length, this is accessible but should also age quite well. The 2023 Grüner Veltliner Ried Zwerithaler Kammergut Smaragd is a site still owned by Melk Abbey. The wines made from this site were historically reserved for the abbot. These vines were planted in 1907 and have immense genetic variety, including a small proportion of other historic varieties like Heunisch, aka Gouais Blanc. Located on the eastern fringe of Weissenkirchen, along the Schildbachgraben, this is like an amphitheater looking southeast across nine terraces, shaded as of mid-afternoon. Gentle, subtle moss on the nose comes with a slight overtone of citrus. The palate is almost viscous, so fluid, but so fine-boned, immensely dense and rounded but without heaviness. Lovely citrus, slender freshness and great individuality distinguish the wine. (Dry)

An extremely pure and elegant vintage for Seña. This is really fresh, nimble and floral on the nose with subtle cherries, plums, redcurrants and wild lavender. More red fruit here with lots of layers and just a touch of sweet spice. Very discreet and subtle, with the elegance, freshness and poise you’d expect from 2021. Medium- to full-bodied on the palate with a bit more flesh and depth if you compare it with Roca de Seña, their second wine. The impeccable tannins show the supreme quality of the fruit this year. Persistent, seamless finish, but comes in a subtle way. 50% cabernet sauvignon, 27% malbec, 17% carmenere and 6% petit verdot. Effortlessly drinkable now, but it will age beautifully.

One of the finest vintages of the iconic Seña wine, the 2021 Seña comes from a cooler year, following the path of 2016 and 2018, certainly cooler than 2020 and 2019. It has a super expressive nose that is elegant, nuanced, perfumed, subtle and pure, with aromatic finesse, layered and complex. It was picked a couple of weeks later than in the previous two years and still keeping the alcohol below 14%. It was produced with a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Malbec (cooler years with more), 17% Carmenere and 6% Petit Verdot, fermented mostly in stainless steel and 10% in oak foudre. It's fine-grained and structured but juicy, similar to 2018 but with more finesse. It has the spicy/herbal twist from the Cabernet, ultra-refined tannins that give it great elegance and with length, purity and delineation. Superb! 120,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2023.

The 2021 Tinker's Field Mature Vine Pinot Noir leads with its typical power and flow, underpinned by currents of mineral tannin and saline freshness. This has clarity and intensity and focus in a single hit, like the pointy tip of the spear. I love this wine each year, the seasonal overlay being just another aspect of it, which is almost forgotten between drinking other wines (I don't forget; we never forget) just how good it is. Like a retina focusing in response to bright light, like all sound shutting off from around, this is a wine of impact and tremendous grace. It thunders, in its way. And despite the fruit and supple ripeness of it, the highlight, undoubtedly for me, is the tannic shape of it. It bends and moves like an old tree in high wind. It's superb. The vines were planted from 1982 to 1989, all on their own roots and dry farmed, with no adjustments at must, and all ferments are wild. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

Although not widely available in the U.S. market, Remi Landier is a reference-point, small grower in the Fins Bois cru with fifth-generation owner Geraldine Landier at the helm. Getting right to it, this single-cask XO shows how seriously we should be taking the finest Fins Bois expressions. Double-distilled in 2011 on a Charentais copper pot still, it was put through a complex aging regimen of two years in new French oak, eight years in used French oak, and two months in a pair of new, 225-liter barriques with extra toast. The result is a bold yet utterly refined powerhouse. The aromatic profile boasts serious complexity with rich candied orange, tangerine, apricot, and mulled cider accented by sweet barrel notes of clove and vanilla pod. A showcase of great depth and nuance, it then turns towards cherry compote, cedar spice, black currant, cardamom, apple pastry, pecan pie filling, sandalwood, and new leather. The palate is every bit as serious with its medium-full weight, head-turning complexity, and serious textural grip, all underpinned by a subtle mineral frame. It shows some heat, but it’s totally approachable with flavors of medicinal orange and peach, stewed apple and pear, and loads of complex spices – clove, anise, cardamom, vanilla, and clean white pepper. The finish goes out with a bang in a succession of dark tobacco, black currant, and blueberry liqueur. One for the thinkers, not for the drinkers.

Tasted out of bottle, the 2021 Grenache is 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and 5% Mourvèdre that saw 60% stems and 21 months in 50% new demi-muids and the balance in used barrels. It has a slightly purer and more precise perfume of ripe blackberries, ground pepper, violets, and game. This carries to a full-bodied Grenache offering flawless overall balance, a pure, cool climate, vibrant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and an incredible finish. It needs 2-3 years of bottle age and will evolve for 15+ years.

The 2021 Grenache is blended with 15% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre. Grapes come from the Alta Mesa Vineyard in Santa Barbara County and Andremily's new Slide Hill estate vineyard in the Edna Valley. It was vinified using 45% whole clusters and matured for around 21 months in 50% new French barriques and 600-liter demi-muids. Bottled on August 26 and tasted on October 25, its red and black fruit is densely coiled, and it takes plenty of air to reveal pure notes of black licorice, coffee beans, lilac, graphite and tobacco. The full-bodied palate is plush, ripe and spicy, with chocolate-textured tannins and fireworks of fresh acidity to call you back to the glass. Powerful yet seamless, it will continue to unfold as it matures in bottle over the next 15 years or more. 450 cases were made, which will be sold as part of a three-bottle box set for $330. A few magnums were also made, which will be sold as part of a two-bottle set with the 2021 Andremily Eaba.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the nose of the 2022 Mourvèdre is so fragrant, giving up expressive notes of juicy blackberries, plum preserves, and black raspberries, leading to an undercurrent of lavender, violets, and forest floor. The full-bodied palate has a rock-solid texture of firm, grainy tannins and beautifully balanced acidity with taut, muscular black fruit and a long, Darjeeling tea-laced finish. The 2022 Mourvèdre is composed of 89% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah, and 1% Viognier, using 70% whole cluster. It was aged for 21 months in French oak barriques, 50% new. 500 cases were made.

The 2021 EABA is based on 63% Syrah, 21% Mourvèdre, 15% Grenache, and the rest Viognier and saw a slightly longer élevage, spending 31 months in 60% new oak. Exotic red and black fruits, ground pepper, violets, bouquet garni, sandalwood, and some gamey, meaty notes all emerge on the nose, and this beauty is full-bodied, has a concentrated, layered mouthfeel and incredible length. It's another incredible wine from this talented winemaker that deserves 3-4 years in the cellar and will shine over the following 15.

Our winery-direct relationship with Brezza once again pays huge dividends with the release of the highly anticipated 2021 single crus. By now, this modern benchmark vintage is on everyone's radar, and Brezza has undoubtedly captured the 2021 magic in their entire range, as our tasting last October confirmed. The smash hits of Sarmassa and Cannubi are towering efforts that weave together incredible terroir character and expert winemaking for collectible Barolos of the highest order.

Brezza's Cannubi holding is a 1.4-hectare parcel in the very heart of the cru, so it comes as no surprise that the 2021 "shows all the class and pedigree that has made this site famous" according to Kerin O'Keefe, whose own 97-point score is eclipsed by a 98 points from Wine Enthusiast, which describes it as "a profound testament to Nebbiolo's nobility ... completeness in a glass, a wine that carries both power and finesse with equal measure. The warm micro-climate of Sarmassa endows the wine with deep but balanced personality, with ideal phenolic ripeness being a typical hallmark of the vineyard. This 98-point stunner is "a wine that speaks of place with crystalline clarity," giving telltale signatures of the cru in every drop. Kerin O'Keefe likewise calls it "a gorgeous wine and great expression of this site," and there's no doubt that the magnificent 2021 vintage has turned out a truly special rendition of this long-time B-21 favorite. Finally, Brezza's prized south-facing plots in Sarmassa, Vigna Bricco, produced a marvelous Riserva in the acclaimed 2019 vintage that "brings together all the elements that make these wines so appealing, namely the elegance of Cannubi and then structure of the Sarmassa," according to Antonio Galloni. A concentrated, impressively built Riserva with stunning underlying tension, the 2019 is a hallmark cellar Barolo, made for a long evolution.

As thrilling as this trio is right now, you'll certainly want to stash bottles away and forget them for a while, because the rewards are sure to be as compelling as almost anything you'll find in these epic vintages, once the wines have time to reach their full potential.

The 2022 Château Lynch-Bages is based on 66% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, and 3% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Its inky purple hue is followed by a sensational Pauillac that has a blockbuster (and classic Lynch-Bages) style in its darker currants, smoke tobacco, lead pencil, and crushed stone-driven aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied, powerful, massively concentrated 2022 that has a dense, layered mid-palate, velvety tannins, flawless balance, and a rare mix of power and elegance. This is a château that’s clearly firing on all cylinders, and this magical beauty will need a decade (or more) to hit the early stages of its prime drinking window. Don't miss it!

A terrific Lynch from a hot vintage with blackcurrants, mint, dried lavender, graphite and thyme on the nose and palate. Medium- to full-bodied, it shows fantastic tannins with a lovely texture that reminds me of cashmere, becoming slightly chewy in the finish. Give this four to five years of bottle age. Try after 2028.

Exceptional, liquorice, slate, graphite, pumice stone tannins and a salt scrape on the finish that is key to balancing out this ripe full bodied Lynch. Great stuff, with ageing potential in spades. High alcohol for a Pauillac no question, but this walks the line with grace. 75% new oak for ageing, Nicolas Labenne winemaker.

Ripe and generous on the palate, this is chewy, crunchy and alive. Ripe fruit is there - chewy and sweet black currants and cherries - fleshy and filling - as is concentration of flavours, but there's a delicate layering of elements which builds the wine on the palate giving power but also focus and precision. Still feels a little shy, with tension there in the funnelling of flavours and a relatively crisp finish but this will elongate in time. Cool blueberries, wet stones, pencil lead and graphite give the mineral touches. No overt heat, oak or spice which also is excellent. One for the long haul. Built with ageing in mind I think.

Crafted by artisan producer and B-21 favorite Pascal Agrapart in the chalky Cote des Blancs, Champagne Agrapart has enjoyed an under the radar reputation, but with the release of these highly rated 2025 cuvees, that's about to change. From one of the top grower-producers in the region, these selections from Agrapart offer a rare taste of meticulously crafted, terroir-driven Champagne at a remarkable value that's bound to sell out in a flash.

Now run by the fourth consecutive generation, Agrapart ranks at the top echelons of Champagne, earning a 3-star rating in the Revue de Vin du France alongside only 7 other houses, including Krug. Planted almost entirely with Chardonnay with a few small plots of Pinot Noir, the ten-hectare Agrapart Domaine comprises more than 70 small parcels predominantly in the Grand Cru villages of Avize, Cramant, Oiry, and Oger with a few Premier Cru plots on the Cote de Blancs, boasting low yielding vines averaging over 40 years of age with the oldest over 70 years. Taking the reins of his family's historic estate in Avize over four decades ago, Pascal works the soils manually while employing organic practices, tilling with horses to ensure his soils do not get compacted (one of his parcels is worked by and named for his horse Venus). Fermenting the base wines exclusively with native yeasts which he believes is critical to expressing the terroir, Pascal employs a mix of older barrels dependent on the cuvee and longer than required bottle aging on the lees, yielding gorgeous, pure fruit impeccably balanced with chalky minerality that finishes long, each cuvee uniquely identified with a different colored plaque (i.e., the round metal disk on top of the cork).

A minerally Champagne with aromas of chalk, citrus, lemon pith, oyster shells, iodine and linden tree. Vertical on the palate, with floral flavors and a fine mousse. Very intense and persistent, with a medium body and long, zesty, lingering mineral acidity. 3 g/L dosage. Drink or hold.

The 2019 Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Mineral Grand Cru is fabulous. All it needs it time to unwind. Readers should be in no rush. Bright and packed with energy, the 2019 is so classy right out of the gate. Vibrant and intensely mineral, the 2019 is very closed in on itself. That won't be a problem in a few years' time, but for now, the Mineral is a wine for the cellar. Extended saline-inflected notes punctuate the sculpted finish, adding to the wine's alluring personality. Mineral, a blend of old-vine sites in Avize and Cramant, is slow to emerge, but it's a Champagne that rewards cellaring. Dosage is 2 grams per liter. Disgorged: June 2025; multiple disgorgements throughout the year.

Our visit to Domaine Henri Gouges earlier this year was revelatory in more ways than one. First, it showed us some of the best 2023 reds we've come across, indicating that, at the top end, this is a super-classic vintage for Burgundy purists to take special interest in. Second, it showed us that Gouges is back on top in a big way. This Nuits-St-Georges benchmark "hits hard" in 2023 according to Andrew, with a standout range that eclipses even some previously acclaimed vintages, in his opinion. 

The village Nuits is always an "energetic gem that does everything it's supposed to do" in fine fashion, while the 1er crus simply shine, in our humble opinion. The 2023 Clos des Porrets St-Georges is "an indisputably classic 2023 NSG 1er cru in every way," while the Pruliers "takes this site to the level of more lauded crus like its stablemate, the Vaucrains." Speaking of which, this stellar cru produced a potential 96-pointer that Jasper Morris calls "Immediately classy on the nose from this great terroir. Not hugely open, but very fine, and this continues on the palate. A sense of refinement despite the level of energy." Finally, the Les St-Georges makes a fine case for this vineyard as the best in the appellation (perhaps deserving of grand cru status?). Burghound describes the 2023 as "super-sleek, intense and detailed, mineral-driven and muscular," showing all the pedigree of this hallowed site in a vintage that allows it to shine in every facet. 

Needless to say, when we were offered our allocation, we jumped on every last bottle, so now our Burgundy collectors can stock up on some of the sharpest collectible gems of the vintage at superb, market-leading pricing.

Quite possibly the wine of the 2023 vintage for Gouges in my estimation, the Pruliers 1er Cru embodies everything that made this vintage so successful for the domaine. Across the board, these were some of the most perfumed, delineated wines we've tasted yet this year, and the structural and textural finesse are almost unbelievable for Nuits-St-Georges. The Pruliers is more forthcoming than the Vaucrains in its fruit profile but slightly more subdued in its minerality (which is no knock on either wine, it must be noted). An immediately arresting, heady aromatic profile is centered on super-vibrant cherry, raspberry, and rhubarb also shows flecks of darker black fruit at the edges along with a slightly closed site signature. Like all the Gouges 2023s, the purity of fruit is off the charts. The clay-heavy soils no doubt contribute to its upfront personality, which translates the fruit profile beautifully to the palate. The texture is compact yet also wonderfully silky – it almost demands to be enjoyed now, but that compact nature suggests you should definitely stash some away. This is going to be a special Pruliers in the due course of time, as stunning as it is even today.

The treasured 1ers crus of Puligny Combettes and Meursault Perrieres surely turned out some absolutely thrilling renditions in 2023, the former "super-sleek, delicious, and appealingly tension-filled" and the latter showing 95-point potential according to both Martin and Morris for its "cool, pure and beautifully layered" personality. The sleeper star, however, is the "marvelous" Puligny 1er Cru Chalumeaux, showing 96-point potential from Morris.

It's great to see such an iconic domaine showing this level of potential and promise as it enters a new era, and based on what we saw from them earlier this year, Matrot's best days may yet be ahead of us.

A clear fresh colour, with a thoroughly energetic bouquet that is still classical Charmes. Excellent in the mouth too, very pure white fruit, good acidity, many layers to this and fine persistence. A fine expression of the vineyard and showing that 2023 does not lack concentration. As per the Chalumeaux, the grapes from the young vines suffered in the heat and were sold off. Drink from 2028-2036. Tasted Oct 2024.

Mid lemon yellow, riper and sunnier but in a pleasingly floral idiom. I love the balance to this and there is a fine thread of acidity which really sets this apart, and a lovely little citrus tint to the fresh yet ripe apples. Grapes from the young vines caught the sun, did not make the cut and were sold off. What they bottled is marvellous though! Drink from 2028-2035. Tasted Oct 2024.

The 2023 Puligny Chalumaux 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet with touches of chalk dust, light apple blossom scents, fine delineation and a little more concentration than the Garenne. The palate is well balanced, fresh and saline with a bright bead of acidity and a pretty, lightly spiced finish. Charming.

An airy and pretty combination blends notes of various white orchard fruit, especially pear and Granny Smith apple, with those of spice and citrus wisps. The rich and solidly voluminous flavors possess a fleshy mouthfeel before concluding in a clean and dry finish that could also use better depth. I like the balance and this should progressively develop better complexity if given a chance. *Outstanding*

Domaine Charvin is a first-rate, under-the-radar favorite that routinely lands on the short lists of Châteauneuf insiders everywhere. The domaine's vineyard in the south of the appellation could produce a ripe, powerhouse style, but Laurent Charvin's methods make these wines some of the region's most elegant and refined, vintage after vintage.

His Midas touch is amply evident in this stunning 2022 Châteauneuf that notched a whopping 98 points from James Suckling's Rhône critic, Stuart Pigott, who captures the style perfectly: "This astonishing Chateauneuf-du-Pape has the enormous aromatic complexity and subtlety that we expect from Grand Cru red Burgundies." Yohan Castaing likewise lauds it as "one of my favorites this year," going on to extol its "long and ethereal" finish and "delicate tannic frame."

Not only will hardcore Rhône fans go head over heels for the "sensuality, elegance, finesse and an ethereal character" of this beguiling red, but Burgundy fans and collectors can find much to love in a beautiful expression with tons of cross-over appeal.

This astonishing Chateauneuf-du-Pape has the enormous aromatic complexity and subtlety that we expect from Grand Cru red Burgundies. Enormous concentration and ample richness on the palate, and the structure behind this is no less impressive. Stacks of very fine tannins. The black and red berry fruit washes over you in a huge wave in the breathtaking licorice finish. So much drive and freshness. Enormous aging potential. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

Another highlight this year, Charvin's 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape exhales a complex, floral bouquet of violet, rose petals, dark cherries, spices and menthol intertwined with delicate garrigue notes. Medium to full-bodied and fine-boned with a layered core of fruit, bright acids and velvety tannins, it finishes long and ethereal with a delicate tannic frame thanks to whole bunches. This blend of 80% Grenache, 7% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre and the rest of Vaccarèse and Counoise is one of my favorites this year.
