2021 Vajra Barolo Ravera (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"Stylistically, the Vajra Barolos embody all the virtues of modern classicism. The wines are elegant, silky, polished and an absolute delight to drink." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

You know the name, and perhaps you already know that the 2021 vintage in Barolo is one for the books, so let's jump right into this set of stunning new releases from "one of the leading estates in Piedmont."

As any astute Barolo collector knows, a great vintage is marked not only by the heights that the top wines reach, but by the overall quality of the entry-level offerings, and Vajra's flagship Albe bottling knocks it out of the park in 2021. Wine Advocate's Monica Larner tagged it with 95 points and called it "an enormously versatile expression of Nebbiolo, with an affordable price, that offers more value for your money than most Barolos out there," with several other critics chiming in with their own glowing praise for a serious sub-$40 contender.

Movnig to the single crus, Vajra's enviable stable is a star-studded affiair in this benchmark campaign, led by a pair of 98-point collectible treasures in the Ravera and Bricco della Viole, the latter "a wine of stature and breeding" showcasing "little details [that] emerge with terrific sharpness in an epic vintage such as 2021." Of course, we shouldn't overlook the 96-point Coste di Rose. "Loaded with finesse" per Kerin O'Keefe, "[it's] already tempting, [but] the best is yet to come."

It's safe to say this is one of the must-have ranges in 2021 Barolo, so collectors should make room in the cellar and cast a wide net on these guaranteed long-haul trophies.

The 2021 Barolo Ravera comes from an amphitheater-shaped vineyard that captures the sunlight, which the producers believe is what gives this cuvée its depth and richness. In the glass, the nose of the 2021 Barolo Ravera is remarkably concentrated, revealing notes of black raspberry and grenadine, fresh leather, and pressed flowers, with a long and sustained feel. The generous sweetness of fruit and its more noble, ripe tannins come through on the mid-palate, but it has a lot of finesse on the finish. The sapidity and purity of the fruit meets the tannins and acidity where they are fabulously. The estate keeps improving these wines, and this one is exceptional. Harvested over three days, it saw 55 days of submerged cap maceration, followed by 26 months of cask aging. In 2021, they lost about 15% of this vineyard production due to spring frost.

98 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2025)

From one of the most sought-after crus sites today, the G.D. Vajra 2021 Barolo Ravera opens to a vibrant ruby color. The wine takes its time opening, especially when tasted young, but that delay bodes well for its future bottle evolution. This wine is built like a wall, with each brick representing its own distinct character. There is dark fruit, pressed flower, herb, ebony and a very elegant mineral side. The bouquet is direct and vertical, with lifted intensity over a medium-plus palate. The tannins are elegantly managed, and this wine has the latitude for long cellar aging. It ferments in stainless steel and ages in large oak casks.

97+ points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jan 2025)

This red is complex and solidly built, featuring black cherry, blackberry and black currant aromas and flavors. Iron, earth and underbrush accents chime in on the firm finish. Remains fresh and vibrant. Best from 2029 through 2050. From Italy.

2020 Domaine Giraud Galimardes Rouge (750ml)
Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Domaine Giraud is a relative newcomer in the Southern Rhone, crafting its first wine in 1974 from 4 hectares of rented vines and producing its first estate cuvee in 1998 under second generation siblings Marie and Francois Giraud. Spanning over 17 hectares spread over 64 separate parcels across the appellation, Giraud's estate owned vineyards are planted with vines averaging 60-80 years of age in a diverse mix of pebble, sand, clay, and limestone soils, each parcel farmed organically with minimal treatments and managed manually from harvesting to sorting.

Sourced primarily from old-vine Grenache including parcels in Les Gallimardes and La Crau, the elegant 2020 Domaine Giraud Chateauneuf-du-Pape Tradition Rouge is a blend of 80% Grenache and 5% Mourvedre aged for 18 months in cement vats and 15% Syrah matured in used Bordeaux barriques and bottled without filtering or fining, crafted in a vineyard-driven style with "relatively simple, unadorned winemaking" according to Wine Advocate's Joe Czerwinski with fine-grained tannins that frame the intense, luscious fruit and predict a long and satisfying evolution in the cellar.

A small-production cuvee that wasn't produced at all in 2021 due to frost damage, the enticing 95-point 2020 Domaine Giraud Chateauneuf-du-Pape Les Gallimardes Rouge comes from a terroir-expressive vintage "producing athletic, elegant wines of intensity and panache" according to Decanter's Matt Walls, an under-the-radar gem priced far below the region's higher profile estates and expertly crafted to reward savvy collectors with over a decade of pleasurable drinking ahead.

95WS 94JD 94V 94JS 93WA

Offers inviting red currant and cassis flavors up front, layered with licorice root, fruitcake spices and charred mesquite. Though big-boned, this shows grace and polish, balance and finely cut texture. Reveals iron shavings and crushed herbes de Provence, which add a refreshing savory edge through a finish that goes on and on. Beautiful. Grenache and Syrah. Drink now through 2038. 70 cases imported.

95 points, Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator (Dec 2022)

Coming all from a single parcel in the southern part of the appellation, the 2020 Châteauneuf du Pape Les Gallimardes is 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah. Its slightly deeper purple hue is followed by full-bodied aromas and flavors of darker, almost blue fruits, ground pepper, loamy soil, truffle, and Provençal garrigue. With a forward, charming, sexy profile, it has sweet tannins and the balance and depth to evolve for 10-15 years.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2022)

The 2020 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Galimardes aged for 18 months in a combination of new oak barriques and concrete vats. It offers up intense aromas of rose petals, very ripe red fruits, exotic spices and a dash of white pepper. Compared to the Tradition, the 2020 Les Galimardes has a higher proportion of Grenache, a little bit less Syrah and no Mourvèdre at all. The result is a massively concentrated, full-bodied red with a firm tannic structure balanced by lively acidity. What both wines have in common is their hedonistic appeal and age-worthiness.

94 points, Nicolas Greinacher, Vinous (Jun 2023)

A great classic with loads of damson plums, dark berries, mocha and sweet spices. Full-bodied with finely grained tannins and a rich core of berries on the palate. Creamy and well put together. Fresh acidity with a dark cherry-like character emphasizes the flavorful and vibrant finish. 90% grenache and 10% syrah. Drink or hold.

94 points, James Suckling (May 2023)

The fruit-dominated 2020 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Gallimardes almost explodes with ripe cherries and raspberries. A blend of 90% old-vine Grenache (planted 1903) with 10% Syrah, it's full-bodied, juicy and supple, then turns softly dusty on the finish. This delivers plenty of pleasure and satisfaction, although it exhibits neither the depth nor complexity of the stupendous 2019.

2020 Massolino Barolo Margheria (750ml)

"Massolino is among the estates I place at the top of Piedmont's hierarchy because of the consistency of the wines across their entire range." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

One of Piedmont's leading lights, Massolino is a perennial standout among Barolo fans for their super-refined, elegant house style. From the village wine to the single-cru expressions, you'll find captivating profiles that have won critical accolades year in and year out. We just sourced a must-see parcel of some of the estate's finest recent releases, showcasing the impeccable excellence that characterizes every bottle of Massolino.

This WA94 2021 straight Barolo is a quintessential expression of what makes Massolino such a reference-point estate for Serralunga terroir. "So elegantly composed," declares Decanter, while Galloni calls it "a fabulous wine that shows both the quality of the year and the very high standards at Massolino." Every bit as compelling is the 2019 straight Barolo from an equally prodigious vintage, which "straddles the line between power and elegance ... offering terrific balance and length" according to Wine Spectator. We also have a pair of superb single crus from 2020 in the WAS97+ Parussi and WA95 Margheria. The latter is "especially fine-textured and elegant" for the warm vintage, while the former is "a stunner ... radiant and bright with an especially direct and focused quality."

In short, these are some of the savviest buys in Barolo from a producer with one the finest track records in the category.

95WA 95JS 94WS 94WE 93JD 93V

With fruit from the mighty village of Serralunga d'Alba, the Massolino 2020 Barolo Margheria (with 7,400 bottles made) is a classic expression. You get all those pretty Serralunga d'Alba elements with dark fruit, ferrous earth, orange peel and blue flower. I find this warm vintage to be especially fine-textured and elegant. There is a note of sweet cherry on the close. This bottle needs to flesh out with more cellar time.

95+ points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jan 2025)

I like the freshness and vivid red-fruited character. Medium-bodied with firm, slightly chewy tannins. It’s compact and structured with a tense and lively aftertaste. Vivid and bright with hibiscus undertones to the orange and berry character. Try from 2027, but already very pretty.

95 points, James Suckling (May 2024)

A ripe style, this red features cherry, raspberry, plum and eucalyptus flavors, with hints of licorice and iron. Firms up midpalate, leaving a compact yet complex finish that echoes the fruity and savory notes. Best from 2027 through 2045. 610 cases made, 185 cases imported.

94 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Apr 2025)

This Margheria Barolo is a stunning expression of elegance, with captivating high-toned fruit and delicate hints of strawberry tops. The palate is refined and graceful, with fine-grained tannins and mouthwatering acidity that enhance the pure, precise flavors. A true embodiment of finesse, this wine is a standout example of the cru's potential. Drink 2026-2045.

94 points, Jeff Porter, Wine Enthusiast (Sep 2024)

The medium red 2020 Barolo Margheria takes a spicier but equally elegant profile, with notes of dried cranberries, anise, dried flowers, and gravelly earth. It gains in intensity through the palate, with good concentration, a slightly more broad-shouldered feel, ripe tannins, and a savory note of tea leaf on the finish. The warmth of the vintage impacts the wine a bit, but it retains good freshness at this stage. Drink 2025-2035.

93 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2024)

The 2020 Barolo Margheria is a very pretty wine that shows the gentler side of the year. Dried herbs, menthol, incense, new leather and licorice all take shape in the glass. The 2020 is a soft, uncharacteristically open-knit Margheria that will drink well with only minimal cellaring.

Massolino works mostly with Serralunga d'Alba fruit, but this is the one exception. From a vineyard site in Castiglione Falletto with sandy limestone soils, the 2020 Barolo Parussi is a stunner. The wine is radiant and bright with an especially direct and focused quality. I would describe it as razor-sharp. This adds to a general sense of fine polish and tightness. I can't get enough and I can't wait to see where it goes 10 or 20 years from now. Parussi is an 8,300-bottle release.

97+ points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jun 2025)

Vivid red fruit with subtle floral and citrusy notes and hints of crushed stones. Medium-bodied with firm tannins. Structured and focused with a lingering, expanding aftertaste. Impressive density. Try after two to three years.

2022 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Consistently earning critical acclaim vintage over vintage including the #4 spot on the Wine Spectator's Top 100, the decadent 2022 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon continues the Faust reputation for over delivering value, an immensely satisfying Napa Cab from the founder of Quintessa offering an enticing combination of fresh, opulent dark fruit and lush, velvety tannins, unbeatably priced for Napa Cab fans to scoop up by the case and enjoy often.

Located just past Beringer heading north on Highway 29, Faust chose to open its new sleek tasting and event center in a once run down Victorian on a hillside near Healdsburg, using it as an opportunity to expose visitors to Napa's lesser-known, less-visited Coombsville AVA 20 minutes to the south where the Faust vineyard is located. Recognizing the cooler region's potential for growing Cabernet Sauvignon over a decade before it became an AVA in 2001, former Concha y Toro CEO and longtime California vintner Agustin Huneeus established Faust on the site of a former dairy farm in 1998, the early vintages of Faust establishing the reputation of Coombsville as a site capable of producing high-quality, complex Cabs and attracting a who's who of celebrated winemakers to the area including Andy Erickson and Paul Hobbs. Located just east of the town of Napa, the certified organic 128-acre Faust vineyard is planted in rich gravelly loam and volcanic rock soils that enhance minerality while the nearby cup and saucer like ridge coined the 'Coombsville caldera' funnels winds from the San Pablo Bay and create conditions for extended, gradual ripening. Blending 86% Cabernet Sauvignon with small amounts of Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc primarily from Faust's Coombsville site, former Harlan and Groth winemaker David Jelinek aged the 2022 Faust for 20 months in 25% new French oak barrels, yielding a bold and pleasurable Cab with elegant, plush fruit and bright acidity built to age gracefully over the next decade.

Declaring the AVA "Napa Valley's Rising Star," the Wine Enthusiast called Coombsville a top choice for "buyers that desire something new from Napa," the 2022 Faust Cabernet Sauvignon living up to its reputation as an exceptional, cellar worthy Napa Cab reflecting the pioneering winemaking legacy of Quintessa founder Agustin Huneeus at an incredible bargain price.

90WA

Faust's 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon features attractive aromas of dried herbs, pencil shavings, black cherries and cassis. It's medium to full-bodied and rather easy-drinking, not overly concentrated or rich but with enough texture to make it a steakhouse staple.

2021 Peter Jakob Kuhn Doosberg Riesling Trocken Grosses Gewachs (750ml)
Riesling from Rheingau, Germany
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

"Weingut Peter Jakob Kühn has produced a stellar range of 2021ers that will be cellar treasures a handful of years down the road."

- John Gilman,View From the Cellar

For whatever reason, the estate of Peter Jakob Kuhn flies under the radar of even many tried and true German wine fanatics, but this pair of 2021s on offer today should go a long way towards rectifying that situation. As classic and traditional as they come in terms of style, the wines are nonetheless made according to owner Peter Bernhard Kuhn's forward-looking vision and innovative approach to farming.

The 2021 vintage was a clear study in the classic German Riesling profiles, the cooler conditions lending themselves to old-school, pure, filigreed wines that buck the trend of recent warmer vintages like 2020 and 2022, instead defined by their bright precision, electric vibrancy, and most importantly, long-term cellar potential. The Kuhn estate releases a year later than the majority of their contemporaries, so these 2021s are just now showing up where many 2022s (and even 2023s) are already on the market. Carrying big scores from some prominent voices in German wine, Kuhn's 2021s belong on the shortlist of smart collectible buys for any serious enthusiast.

Leading off, the 2021 Doosberg Grosses Gewächs boasts a towering 97-point score from Vinous. "Utterly concentrated, intense, almost searing with luminosity and brightness," it's a spectacular rendition of a treasured Rheingau site and the crown-jewel in the Kuhn range. For those seeking a razor-sharp cellar buy that punches well above its price tier, the 2021 Hallgärtener Hendelberg Erste Lage is just the ticket. "A premier cru bottling that clearly approaches the quality of Grosses Gewächs because of its old vines," according John Gilman, the 2021 is resounding triumph, "superb, impressive, profound, absolutely focused and delicious, yet so resonant and rich" as described by Vinous. The only drawback (if you can call it that) is their highly limited presence in the US market, so the smart move is to lock in and add this pair of surefire cellar contenders to your collection while you can.

97V

The 2021 Riesling Oestricher Doosberg is grown on deep loess loam on white quartzite. The vines are between 40 to 45 years old. The nose gives a flicker of reduction but also sports hints of crushed herb. The palate falls into step, presenting pure, lithe, bright lemon with herbal edges. This is utterly concentrated, intense, almost searing with luminosity and brightness, yet buffered. This is profound, earthy, almost chalky, with a beautifully fine-boned structure that just pushes this lemony brightness forward, like a beam of light, relentless but illuminating. (Bone-dry)

Weingut Prager's Toni Bodenstein is indisputably in the top echelon of his generation of Austrian winemakers, and now that his son Robert has taken the helm at the revered Wachau estate, it's clear that the next generation will be one of continued brilliance.

Always among the most sought-after names in Austrian wine, Prager's flagship bottlings set the bar, vintage after vintage, for both Riesling and Grüner Veltliner. Today's offer features a quartet of 2022s that have already found great favor among our long-time fans and collectors of Austria's best, and we just negotiated a new parcel at must-see pricing that puts them among the sharpest buys in the market. Leading the charge, the 2022 Klaus Riesling is once again the crown-jewel of the range, with a potential 99 points from Peter Moser, Austria's leading wine critic at the renowned Falstaff Magazine, and 98 points from James Suckling's Austria critic Claire Nesbitt, who writes, "What a stunning example of cool climate riesling ... So long and seamless, with tension and focus that just keeps going." The 2022 Riesling Achleiten is likewise a sterling example of hallmark Prager class, with 96-98 points from Moser for its "very enjoyable style with length and ageing potential." No less stupendous are the Grüner Veltliners, as seen most clearly in the 99-point Achleiten Stockkultur Smaragd.

Any way you look at it, these are must-haves for serious fans and collectors of these varietals, and our new market-leading, limited-time pricing is a perfect reason to stock up while you can.

Light greenish yellow, silver reflections. Fresh herbal savouriness, dark minerality, ripe yellow apple fruit, some mango, tobacco, a hint of lime zest. Taut, elegant, fine nuances of white stone fruit, finesse-rich and lively, salty and very long adhering, certain ageing potential, already today very seductive.

99 points, Peter Moser, Falstaff (Jul 2023)

Delicious peach, pear and melon aromas here with chamomile and fresh herbs. Some licorice, too. Full of flavor and so alive, with a full body and a very fine, powdery texture. Wonderfully fresh, too; mineral and chalky on the long and cool finish. Sustainable. Drink or hold.

2016 Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva (750ml)

B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Bodegas Muga's status as an all-time Rioja reference-point is reaffirmed with this sterling foursome of releases that we just secured at razor-sharp pricing. Leading off we have a Prado Enea for the ages.

"The expressive, complex and nuanced 2016 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is a textbook traditional Rioja in the making ... with all the components in the right proportion to age superbly in bottle." - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Muga's flagship bottling is always a coveted item, and this WA97+ rendition is already showing legendary pedigree that will thrill collectors and connoisseurs of Spain's finest. A universally lauded expression of this classic Rioja Gran Reserva, the 2016 boasts towering press including no fewer than four 97-point scores, putting it in rarified air among the greatest vintages of this Spanish icon in the 21st century. "A brilliant wine with a solid two decades of prime drinking ahead of it" per Jeb Dunnuck, this is collectible Rioja class at its very best, and it's now available to our private clients at a must-see price that you won't find anywhere else.

The Selección Especial Reserva is always a crowd and collectible favorite in the range and always priced well for a broad audience yet offering the kind of cellar-worthy appeal that serious collectors are looking for. The 2020 rendtion ramps up the collectible appeal thanks to a particular feature of the vintage itself – no Prado Enea was made in 2020, so all the fruit and juice that would normally comprise that flagship icon has instead gone into the Selección Especial. So, it's no surprise that the 2020 picks up right where the 2019 leaves off, led by Jeb Dunnuck's 95-point review that highlights its "medium to full-bodied richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, and silky tannins," which makes it "already hard to resist."

Finally, the newly released 2021 Reserva Rioja is one of the sharpest values in Spanish wine, "a textbook example of [Muga's] style in a very good year, with power, concentration and clout, elegance and freshness" perGutiérrez' 94-point review in Wine Advocate. It's a perfect candidate to stack by the case, since it will not only cruise for several years in the cellar, but it will quench your thirst for Muga excellence anytime over the next decade while the you wait for the big boys to reach their prime drinking windows. For fans of Spanish wine and of Rioja in particular, this is a spectacular opportunity to load up on proven performers that will put many smiles on your face for countless years to come, at market-best pricing.

The expressive, complex and nuanced 2016 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is a textbook traditional Rioja in the making. 2016 was a very elegant year, with aging potential, volume and very good acidity and freshness. It's full-bodied but fine-boned, has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.6 and 5.25 grams per liter acidity. It has terrific balance, with all the components in the right proportion to age superbly in bottle. They have also been working on the selection of wood used. This wine matured in French and American oak barrels for three years, and the oak is super integrated. 127,808 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2020. It was an exceptional year with volume and quality.

97+ points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Feb 2024)

Deep ruby in color, this wine has a nose of cocoa powder, coffee bean, lavender and cherry. It is smooth at first sip, with tannins that slowly build in volume and then drift away to reveal black cherry, blackberry, chocolate, mint and orange-zest flavors. The brilliant finish is marked with a floral note. Drink through 2036.

97 points, Mike DeSimone, Wine Enthusiast (Jul 2024)

Complex aromas of dark fruit with violets, walnuts and chocolate. Classy. It's full-bodied with plush yet fine velvety tannins, and a precise and pointed finish. Juicy and savory. Tight finish. It's very long. This is beautiful now but will be even better in three or four years. Linear and vertical at the same time. Try after 2026.

97 points, James Suckling (Nov 2023)

Aged in barrel for 36 months, the 2016 Gran Reserva Prado Enea is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano from Rioja Alta. This dark garnet wine reveals thyme, plum and sour cherry notes, accompanied by reductive nuances of matchstick and saffron. Additionally, it displays hints of biscuit, wax and dried flowers. On the palate, it is dry, supple and chalky, with a juicy, energetic flow that leads to a long-lasting, complex finish. While the leaner style brought on by the cold vintage may appear slightly unsubstantial for Prado Enea lovers, it remains absolutely delicious.

The Single Malts of Scotland Linkwood 10yr 2012 Reserve Casks Single Malt Scotch (750ml)
From Elgin, Speyside, Scotland
B-21 Top Recommendation

"...just a fascinating, multi-layered single malt that does everything it's supposed to do, in its own singular fashion." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

The Speyside faithful go head over heels for Linkwood, but finding a top-quality example on the market is always a stroke of luck. Just 2% of the distillery's production is bottled on its own, with the vast majority of the production playing a crucial part in Diageo's flagship blends like Johnnie Walker. Moreover, most of what you'll find on the independent bottler scene is some sort of sherry-finished version that may or may not reflect the true Linkwood character, which is why we were thrilled to come across this four-cask, limited edition from Single Malts of Scotland, done in light-toast, new hogsheads. As B-21 spirits buyer Andrew Kitz describes it, "this is quintessential Speyside and classic Linkwood in its pure form, with no bells or whistles," just a superb example of the unpeated Speyside malt that makes this distillery so widely admired (and what makes its stocks so jealously guarded by Diageo). With the characteristic combination of richness and elegance that defines Linkwood for true Scotch aficionados, this 10-Year-Old beauty will deliver everything you're looking for and then some.

93AK

Linkwood’s role as a crucial lynchpin in the Diageo blending machine means we don’t see much of it on the market – just 2% of production gets bottled on its own – but this elusive, fan-favorite Speyside distillery shines in this four-cask run from Single Malts of Scotland. A spry, young 10 Year Old done in all new hogsheads, this is quintessential Speyside and classic Linkwood in its purest form, with no bells or whistles. Such a precisely crafted example, the gorgeous medium-light gold color leads to a very bright, fresh nose with citrus zest and invigorating salt spray as the beautifully pure, clean malt takes center stage. Apple and pear emerge with some sweet cereal undertones, rounded out by luscious hints of honeydew melon. The palate shows the rich side of the malt, especially after a few drops of water. It maintains its elegance in the light salinity and lemon curd flavors, but soon offers up a raft of deep, well-rounded barrel notes like cinnamon pie crust cookies (the ones my mom still makes to this day) and light toffee, before coming back around to candied ginger and herbal tea on the finish. After about 45 minutes, the empty glass was all chocolate fudge brownie aromas. Wild, but nothing is out of place or overwhelming – it’s just a fascinating, multi-layered single malt that does everything it’s supposed to do, in its own singular fashion.

Light yellow-green, silver reflections. Fine yellow tropical fruit, candied tangerine zest and honey blossom. Substantial, elegant, salty at the core, taut, white fruit, very racy, limes on the finish, seems immensely animating and very long lasting, a lively food companion, very precise, certain ageing potential.

97-99 points, Peter Moser, Falstaff (Jul 2023)

What a stunning example of cool climate riesling. It’s full-bodied and deep, but so cool and delicate, packing in sleek layers of honeysuckle, apricots, lemons and grapefruit married to thyme and crushed rock. 2022 Glantenay Volnay Vieilles Vignes (750ml)

"The unassuming but passionate Thierry Glantenay continues to produce delicious, sensual wines in his cellars in Volnay." - William Kelley, Wine Advocate

One of Volnay and Pommard's best kept secrets, Domaine Bernard & Thierry Glantenay somehow still flies under the radar, despite producing some of the most consistently and widely acclaimed wines in these appellations. The only drawback is that they're always tightly allocated and in short supply, which makes our in-stock parcel a truly enticing proposition.

The entire range is well worth seeking out, but the undisputed highlights start with the 94-point, "superb" Clos des Chenes 1er Cru, "perfectly proportioned and built for the long haul" according to John Gilman of View From the Cellar. This site's familiar power and energy are readily on display in grand fashion in 2022. The "equally stunning" Santenots 1er Cru delivers another benchmark terroir expression in its "velvety and harmonious" profile. Finally, don't miss the epic Les Rugiens 1er Cru, "the most complex and complete amongst Glantenay's range ... a Pommard to hunt down" as Vinous' Neal Martin puts it.

Glantenay's approach in the cellar and in the vineyards has resulted in a steady upward trajectory for the domaine over the past several years, and the wines are now flirting with the titans of Volnay and Pommard while still remaining relatively accessible for collectors looking for real long-term propositions at savvy prices.

91JG 91V

Thierry Glantenay’s 2022 Volnay “Vieilles Vignes” is really an excellent example of the vintage. The bouquet is pure and precise, offering up scents of red and black cherries, a touch of pomegranate, pigeon, a complex base of dark soil tones, raw cocoa, vanillin oak and a smoky topnote. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and tangy in personality, with an excellent core of fruit, ripe, buried tannins and superb length and grip on the well balanced finish. Fine juice in the making.

91 points, John Gilman, View From The Cellar (Apr 2025)

The 2022 Volnay Vieilles Vignes is completely de-stemmed. Brambly red fruit and light tertiary scents on the nose that sports a minor reduction. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, not a complex Volnay, but fresh with fine backbone and respectable mineralité on the finish. A well-crafted Volnay.

"When we tasted this with PM Spirits’ Nicolas Palazzi, we knew straight away that we had to go all in." - Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

Full cask-strength bottlings are a relative rarity in the world of mezcal, and that's only one reason we jumped on this offering from PM Spirits. More than anything, it's immediately apparent that this is artisan mezcal of the highest order and the maestro who made it knows his craft.

When Jason Cox, founder of 5 Sentidos, stumbled on this batch from mezcalero Rene Parada Barriga, he put in the hands of PM's Nicolas Palazzi, and the entire batch was soon on its way to Nicolas' warehouse. One snap decision after another, and we've picked up all of Nicolas' remaining supply of this highly limited edition, and one taste will prove our point. The varietal purity and focus are second to none, even for such a monumental spirit of 62% ABV, and the myriad layers of complexity are almost too much to describe in one go. As B-21's Andrew Kitz notes, "The push-pull tension of this mezcal is really something to experience, and I have no doubt that the more I go back to it, the more subtle nuances and facets I’ll find that I somehow missed the first time around."

We secured all that was left at a must-see, market-best price and once this is batch is gone, we won't be seeing more of it.

94AK

When we tasted this with PM Spirits’ Nicolas Palazzi, we knew straight away that we had to go all in. Espadin may be the most ubiquitous mezcal varietal out there, but this one is anything but common. The first thing that stands out in this cask-strength powerhouse is just how balanced it is aromatically. Sure, you get the customary mezcal smoke, but a fine mineral tune plays perfect counterpoint to it in equal intensity. It’s super-clean, letting the purity of the Espadin shine with aromas of tomato leaf, tarragon, and highly concentrated black fruits like currant and mulberry. The roasted note goes to the background as the profile becomes more nuanced and takes on a lighter character. Fruity tones of lime zest, dried apple, persimmon, and grapefruit vie for position with savory notes of charred meat and sesame seed. As for the palate, you’d expect some huge personality at full cask strength, and you’d be correct. Big but refined smoke takes center stage on the viscous, weighty frame along with the dark fruit profile from the nose. Accented by charred plantain leaves and fine volcanic ash, the flavors then take a turn towards the higher tones with zesty citrus, elderflower, and grapefruit coming out. The texture becomes more vibrant as it throws one last curveball in the form of briny green olives and iodine on the long, drawn-out finish. The push-pull tension of this mezcal is really something to experience, and I have no doubt that the more I go back to it, the more subtle nuances and facets I’ll find that I somehow missed the first time around.

Telmo Rodriguez is an indisputable dynamo in Spanish wine, and we just landed an allocation of one of his most limited and sought-after cuvées.

"It's quite classical, and it has power, concentration and ripeness with balance and freshness and a certain elegance." - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Made from just 4 hectares of vines covering five distinct plots, the production of Pago la Jara is miniscule by Spanish standards, at just 4,000 bottles. But the wine itself is a blockbuster that shows all the powerhouse character of the Toro D.O. along with the expertly applied restraint of one of Spain's most acclaimed living winemakers. The 95-point 2020 rendition recently came onto our radar at a price that was simply to good to ignore. Couple that with the fact that it's one of Spain's most consistently excellent insider's finds and you have a collectible gem of the highest order that can cruise in the cellar for a few decades or shine tonight if you're the impatient type.

Our best-in-market regular price is made all the more appealing by a price that makes this a no-brainer for anyone seeking top-echelon collectible quality to stack in the cellar in multiples.

The 2020 Pago La Jara, pure Tinta de Toro from the lieu-dit that names the wine, fermented with indigenous yeasts in 3,000-liter oak vats and matured in 1,500-liter oak foudre and French barriques for 18 months. It's powerful and ripe at 14.5% alcohol with a pH of 3.81 and 4.57 grams of acidity. "The wines from Bosquet des Papes span the full spectrum ... Regardless of the style, the quality is brilliant, and these are beautiful wines." - Jeb Dunnuck

Bosquet des Papes' stellar 2022s prove once again that this rising-star estate is a favorite among Châteauneuf insiders and aficionados, who will be thrilled at this set of stunners from winemaker Nicolas Boiron. The trio of A La Gloire de Mon Grand Père, Chante le Merle, and Les 7 des Pignan each demonstrate Boiron's broad, multi-faceted style. The JD98 Grand Père is "up with the crème de la crème of the vintage ... a stunning success" that strides a fine line between the past and the present, while the Chante le Merle is made in the staunchly traditional method, resulting in a straight-down-the-line "age-worthy, classic, incredibly satisfying Châteauneuf-du-Pape" per Jeb Dunnuck.

The perfect juxtaposition to Chante le Merle's classicism is Les 7 des Pignan. The 2022 marks only the second vintage of this 100%-Grenache, micro-production cuvée fashoned from seven miniscule parcels in the Pignan lieu-dit. Seeing 98-point potential, Wine Advocate's Joe Czerwinski marvels at the "incredible complexity and elegance in this full-bodied wine that's concentrated and tannic yet supple, finishing long and velvety. Wow." Vinous puts an exclamation point on its unabashedly modern character, declaring it "bursting with energy and quite expressive ... with remarkable concentration and an expansive finish."

The 2022 Bosquet des Papes line-up is emblematic of the many shades of contemporary Châteauneuf-du-Pape, all expertly crafted by one of its most dynamic estates and winemakers.

From seven tiny parcels in and around the lieu-dit of Pignan (sandy soils), the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Les 7 de Pignan looks to be even better than the debut 2020 (none was bottled in 2021). Seductive notions of stone fruit, roses and black tea leaves show incredible complexity and elegance in this full-bodied wine that's concentrated and tannic yet supple, finishing long and velvety. Wow.

96-98 points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (Oct 2023)

The 2022 marks the second time that Nicolas Boiron vinified a Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les 7 de Pignan, a single-varietal Grenache from sandy soils. Coming in at 15.5% alcohol, the 2022 unfurls with raspberry, strawberry, crushed violets and licorice alongside leafy undertones. Bursting with energy and quite expressive, this savory Châteauneuf brings it home with remarkable concentration and an expansive finish.

Jacquesson Cuvee 746 (750ml)
Chardonnay from Champagne, France

"Champagnes of naked purity and brilliance..." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

The elegant. 95-point Jacquesson Cuvee No. 746 is a silky, richly layered Champagne revealing a core of fresh, mouthwatering fruit with a delicate, finely beaded mousse on a long, racy finish, an irresistible, vineyard-driven cuvee from a top grower estate unbeatably priced for Champagne lovers and collectors to stock the cellar.

Just a few minutes from Epernay in the small village of Dizy, Champagne Jacquesson has a long history as an innovator in the region as one of the Champagne's oldest houses, among the first in the region to plant vines in rows under the advisement of pioneering viticulturist Dr. Jules Guyot, patenting the wire basket known as the muselet that continues as the standard for holding sparkling wine corks in place and predating Champagne Krug by nearly a half century before Johann-Joseph Krug left his role as cellarmaster at Jacquesson to form his eponymous house in 1843. Eventually purchased by the Chiquet family in 1974, brothers Jean-Herve and Laurent Chiquet have been the force behind the estate's laser focus on producing vineyard driven Champagne, sustainably farming their 28 hectares of Grand Cru and 1er Cru vineyards while lowering yields and transforming their business with the creation of the sequentially numbered, vintage-based Cuvee, numbering the first release in 2004 as Cuvee 728 to mark the estate's 728th wine produced. Described by Champagne expert Peter Liem as "consistently one of the best non-vintage Bruts on the market," the Jacquesson 746 consists of mostly Chardonnay with smaller amounts of Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier sourced from three Grand Crus (Ay, Avize and Oiry) and two 1er Crus (Dizy and Hautvillers), consisting of a base from the exceptional 2018 vintage blended with about 25% from one of the oldest reserve wine collections in Champagne. Vinified in large old oak foudres, the enticing Jacquesson 746 aged on the lees for 4 years before disgorgement and was bottled without filtration with a minimal dosage of 2 grams per liter, offering both "immediacy as well as structure," according to Jeb Dunnuck's Champagne critic Audrey Frick, that will continue to provide lasting enjoyment over the next decade and beyond.

Described as "absolutely delicious" by Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the luxurious 95-point Jacquesson 746 is a testament to the quality legacy of the Chiquet brothers bottled prior to the estate's sale to Artemis Domaines in 2022, ranking among the region's top values at a fraction of the price of similarly crafted Grand Marque cuvees and a great deal on an impressive artisan Champagne worthy of celebrating and sharing.

95WI 94JD 93JS

Based on the generous 2018 vintage, the 746 fills the glass with a pale pink nuclear explosion of fine bubbles forming columns of visible freshness. A blend of 60% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir and 10% Pinot Meunier, it is perfumed and succulent with slightly oxidized notes of ripe red apple mixed in with lemon confit, rose water, chalk dust and hints of spice. The medium to full-bodied palate is plush with showy red fruit that shimmers amid a vibrant acid energy that brings loads of freshness to the long finish. Disgorged February 2023 and finished with a two gram per liter dosage. 242,012 bottles, 9,770 magnums and 398 jeroboams were produced.

95 points, Sarah Mayo, Wine Independent (Nov 2023)

Based on the 2018 vintage, which was an early solar ripe vintage, the NV Champagne Cuvée 746 sees two grams per liter of dosage and is about 50% Chardonnay, the rest Pinot Noir and Meunier, and approximately 25% reserve wine. It pours a highly reflective straw hue and is aromatically forward out of the gate, with savory appeal and notes of citrus oil as well as juicy ripe berries. The palate is juicy and inviting, with approachable silky fruit and a fine mousse. It has wonderful balance, with the warmth from the vintage, and immediacy as well as structure that should provide a good bit of longevity over the coming 10-15 years.

94 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2023)

This shows a rich and rather flamboyant character from the heat of 2018, giving a full and flavorful array of brioche and ripe apple, apple tart and dried pineapple. "Stephan Usseglio has propelled this certified organic and biodynamic estate, named for his father, to among the top ranks of the region." - Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate

The name Usseglio is no secret to lovers of top-flight Châteauneuf-du-Pape, but it's typically PIerre that comes to mind for many. However, that's all changing in recent years, as Domaine Raymond Usseglio is stepping into the limelight under the hand of the highly talented Stephan Usseglio. Having been in charge here since 1999 at the ripe age of 22, Stephan straddles that wonderful line between youthful vision, something he's held onto even as his career has entered a new stage of accomplishment and accolades, and respect for his family's traditions, including their exceptional vine holdings.

The 2022 reds from Usseglio offer a crystal clear picture of a domaine firing on all cylinders and moving up in the quality heirarchy to the very top echelons, highlighted by the JS95 Cuvée Girard, a "dark and powerful" rendition that "makes a bold statement." Taking Grenache purity to the next level is the 2022 Cuvée Imperiale. "With ultra-fine tannins, flawless overall balance, and a great finish," notes Jeb Dunnuck, "it's a gem in the vintage." This astonishing 2022 Chateauneuf has giant depth and concentration of black fruit aromas with notes of spices and dry earth, beneath which is a deep foundation of super-fine tannins. Very long, imposing finish with stacks of licorice and black olive character. Great aging potential. 92% grenache from vines planted in 1901 and 1902, with a small amount of white grape varieties inter-planted. Matured exclusively in concrete tanks. Bottled unfiltered. With a reductive profile, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Imperiale, a blend of 95% Grenache Noir and the remaining portion from other authorized varieties in unknown proportions, exhales aromas of peony, iris, dark wild berries, flowers and mulberries. Medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, it is characterized by ripe tannins and a broad, saline finish accented by peony notes and bright acids. "The 2021 Barbaresco Rabajà is complex, dynamic and youthfully austere—in other words, it's classic Rabajà." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Barbaresco's excellent 2021 vintage is coming into the spotlight, and the region's prized crus are playing starring roles. Rabaja is arguably the most famous cru, a meeting point of the two main ridges that form the town of Barbaresco and a conjunction of soil types that combine with the vineyard's southwest exposure to give ultra-classic, age-worthy Barbarescos with deep personalities.

Among the finest exponents of the vineyard is Giuseppe Cortese, and the 2021 Rabaja from this insider's favorite estate knocks it out of the park with effusive accolades from all around. Kerin O'Keefe's 96-point review is accompanied by a pair of 95-point reviews from Wine Spectator and Antonio Galloni, who finds it "medium in body and complex, with myriad shades of expression ... a drop-dead gorgeous beauty." You might be tempted to pull the cork today, but make no mistake - the 2021 is a nascent stunner that's holding plenty of cards in reserve, so savvy collectors will stock the cellar and give this benchmark expression time to reach its full potential.

A deeper ruby/red color, the 2021 Barbaresco Rabaja has all the components of the entry wine amplified further, with notes of medicinal herbs, turned soil, sappy herbs, dried cherries, and orange peel. Medium-bodied, it offers good length, balance, and persistence on the palate. It’s angular but has ripe tannins, good freshness, and a persistent, savory finish with notes of dark rocky earth. This is a very well-done effort from Giuseppe Cortese.

94 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2024)

A charming, fruits-and-flowers aroma and the rather broad and velvety palate make this one enjoyable already. Rose petals, orange zest, red cherries and a hint of tart cherry provide plenty of pleasure, while relatively soft tannins keep it smooth. Best through to 2030.

"There's no doubt about it – this Maker's cask is tailor-made for pure pleasure."

- Andrew Kitz, B-21 Spirits Buyer

It's every bourbon geek's dream to design their own personal perfect dram, and Maker's Mark gives us that chance with their Private Select program. The process is fairly simple, but the possibilities are almost endless. First, we choose a barrel of Maker's classic cask-strength juice, then we select a combination of ten finishing staves from five distinct types to impart a custom profile that's one of a kind – that's 1,001 possible finishing recipes to choose from. For this particular cask, we went with one Baked American Pure, one Seared French Cuvée, four Maker's Mark 46, and four Roasted French Mendiant, and we couldn't more thrilled with the result. As advertised, the Grandma's Graham Cracker Crust barrel is an ode to all your favorite dessert pies, with unabashed decadence at the center of everything. "So smooth and approachable," as B-21 spirits buyer Andrew Kitz notes, this 108.7 proof beauty hits the sweet spot (literally and figuratively) in its robust yet balanced profile that offers just the right level of hedonism and opulence to appeal to a huge audience of bourbon lovers. With such a stupendous result on our first go, we're already thinking about what new showstopper we can come up with next.

93AK

There’s selecting single casks and there’s building single casks, and the folks at Maker’s Mark offer us a can’t-miss opportunity to do the latter with their Private Select program. For those not familiar, Maker’s uses five different types of finishing staves in their single cask program, selected in combinations of ten by the client. If you struggled with permutations in math class like I did, I’ll give you the answer – that’s 1,001 possible finishing recipes to choose from. For this particular cask, we went with one Baked American Pure, one Seared French Cuvee, four Maker’s Mark 46, and four Roasted French Mendiant (sorry, Toasted French Spice fans, we left that one out). We also left no mystery with the name of the cask either, as Grandma’s Graham Cracker Crust is exactly what you get. Even though it’s bottled at 54.35% ABV, this cask is so smooth and approachable, with no discernable heat on the nose and just a nice warming edge to the finish. Graham cracker crust leads on the nose (obviously), along with all the best fillings – deep red fruits, rhubarb, and raspberry cheesecake. The round, rich, and viscous palate is every bit as opulent as the nose, with initial flavors of … you guessed it, graham cracker crust, now with pecan pie filling. Clove, cinnamon, and nutmeg are extremely well integrated throughout, balanced by a charming faint honey note. With air, the nose takes on additional complexity in the form of sweet tobacco, orange zest, chocolate ganache, and red licorice, while the palate shows some of that same citrus as sweet navel oranges, plus a touch of vanilla bean for good measure. There’s no doubt about it – this Maker’s cask is tailor-made for pure pleasure.

2021 Long Shadows Feather Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Columbia, Washington State
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

One of the most consistently excellent and intriguing projects in Washington wine, Long Shadows is basically an assembly of all-star winemakers applying their world-class skills to some of the best fruit in the state, and it's no wonder that the 2021 Feather Cabernet Sauvignon is the most impressive wine in the stable, as it comes from the hand of none other than Napa Valley icon Randy Dunn. "This rich, spicy, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon has terrific purity, a deep, layered mid-palate, and a broad, layered, expansive mouthfeel that keeps you coming back to the glass," notes Jeb Dunnuck. This cult-caliber expression captures all the hallmark features that put the finest Washington Cabs in a class all their own.

With the help of one of the world's best consulting winemakers in Philippe Melka, Gilles Nicault has developed the Pirouette into a standout, Old World-inspired Bordeaux blend that's simultaneously pure Washington at heart, "a medium to full-bodied, nicely balanced, dense 2020 offering ripe tannins and outstanding length." The 2020 Pirouette is a true showcase of Nicault's blending skills, with top-flight Red Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot playing starring roles, supported by dashes of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec sourced from some of the appellation's most acclaimed sites, including Dionysus and Weinbau. The result is a wine that's "velvety smooth yet lifted in feel," displaying all the various varietal features in due course, along with classic Red Mountain structure and texture that tell you exactly where the wine comes from.

Finally, we have the 2020 Pedestal Columbia Valley Merlot that has been setting the bar for the category since its inception. Sourced from two premier sites on the Wahluke Slope, this top-flight expression boasts all the quintessential hallmarks that make Washington such a hotbed for collectible Merlot bottlings that rival the best from Napa and Bordeaux. Dunnuck declares, I loved the 2020 Merlot Pedestal, which makes the most of the vintage ... it's concentrated, has ripe, chalky tannins, plenty of mid-palate depth, and a great finish." In other words, you have everything you're looking for in a "luscious and round" 94-point rendition that will shine for years in the cellar.

All Cabernet Sauvignon and a blend put together by Randy Dunn, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Feather is inky purple-hued and offers a brilliant nose of cassis, new leather, graphite, and truffly earth. This rich, spicy, full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon has terrific purity, a deep, layered mid-palate, and a broad, layered, expansive mouthfeel that keeps you coming back to the glass. "I love its overall balance, it has notable purity..." - Jeb Dunnuck

Flora Springs' Trilogy is an original Napa Valley icon in the style of Bordeaux blends, having helped set the trends for the category for well over three decades now. Trilogy is undoubtedly one of the most consistent flagship wines from Napa Valley, with legions of fans that have made it one of the most recognized names in the appellation. The spectacular 2021 Napa vintage lends a stupendous character to this already exceptional blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, and 5% Malbec. "Gorgeous, perfumed" aromatics accompany a palate that's "concentrated and focused, a study of cohesion in the glass" as described by Decanter, all pointing, again, to the remarkable consistency that is a hallmark of the estate. We just secured a limited supply at a remarkable price, so fans of this Napa benchmark can load up at one of the sharpest prices in the country.

94JD 93WA 93D 92JS

The flagship 2021 Trilogy from this estate checks in as 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, and the rest Malbec, all raised in mostly (all?) new oak. This medium to full-bodied, ripe, concentrated, satisfying effort has lots of blueberry and darker raspberry-like fruit, some chocolaty oak and dusty minerality, ripe tannins, and a great finish. I love its overall balance, it has notable purity, and I see no reason it shouldn't evolve for 15-20 years.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2024)

A blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Malbec, Flora Springs's 2021 Trilogy offers up an intriguing bouquet of ripe cherries, fine sandalwood and a hint of mint too. While not a huge blockbuster wine, it's medium to full-bodied, nicely proportioned and silky in feel, with a lingering finish.

93 points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (Jan 2024)

Gorgeous perfumed blue and black fruits, including bramble and blackberries, frame the nose. An herbal mint and eucalyptus note on the nose indicates quality. The fruit characteristics on the palate are concentrated and focused, a study of cohesion in the glass. Velvety smooth tannins and an air of restraint make this a meditative red blend to savour unhurriedly.

93 points, Brianne Cohen, Decanter (Dec 2024)

Ripe blackberries, cassis, black olives, cedar and vanilla on the nose. Hints of pencil shavings, too. Full and polished with fine and compact tannins and a lingering finish. Bright and vivid. Better after 2025.

Ripe, succulent ... generous and juicy ...The intensity persists on the finish." - Wine Spectator

Since its founding in 1988, Patz & Hall has done as much as any other producer to define Sonoma's modern wine scene, from expressive appellation bottlings to flat-out superb single-vineyard gems from the region's most storied and coveted sites.

One of the greatest features of the appellation bottlings is that they comprise many of those same incredible vineyard sites that form the top end of the range, which goes a long way in explaining the outstanding, 93-point 2022 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay. Sourced from six blocks of the famed Dutton ranch and augmented by fruit from such illustrious locales as Durell, Zio Tony, Gap's Crown, and Parmalee-Hill, the 2022 displays all the hallmark features of the ultra-classic Sonoma profile – big, vibrant fruit, soaring aromatics, scintillating tension, and exceptional balance, all at a price that makes it one of the most versatile offerings in its category. Equally impressive and maybe more so, the 96-point 2021 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir stands as one of the sharpest buys in Cali Pinot in our entire inventory, with a "Textbook vintage and AVA profile" that landed it a spot on last year's Wine Spectator Top 100 list.

Our long-time California fans are by now well familiar with the benchmark quality and character of Patz & Hall's wines, and this pair delivers everything you've come to love from a true Sonoma icon.

2022 Caymus 50th Anniversary Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California
B-21 Top Recommendation

As the first to introduce Caymus to the state of Florida back in 1981, our decades-long relationship with the Wagner Family of Wines presented a terrific opportunity to feature a selection of their outstanding offerings at rock bottom pricing, from the entry-level Bonanza Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 7 to the 2022 Caymus California Cabernet Sauvignon, along with Chardonny, Pinot Noir, and the easy-drinking Conundrum blends. Here's what's in stock and ready to enjoy.

Boasting dark fruit hinting of vanilla and soft tannins, the Bonanza Cabernet Sauvignon Lot 7 blends fruit from a variety of vineyard sites and vintages, its name referring to the "Bonanza" of unheralded vineyards throughout the state (and not the TV Western for those of us over a certain age…). Crafted for everyday enjoyment and inspired by Chuck Wagner's father and his "no rules" approach to blending wines, the Conundrum White is a refreshing proprietary blend of a variety of white grapes including Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier that boasts lush tropical fruit and crisp acidity, while the Conundrum Red offers rich, dark fruit from its Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet Sauvignon, rounded out by pleasant, layered tannins. Sourced from vineyards in Santa Barbara to the south up to Solano County in the north, the Sea Sun Chardonnay balances bright, creamy fruit woven with harmonious toasted oak, while the Sea Sun Pinot Noir offers lush, ripe red fruit hinting of forest and spice with a velvet, palate-pleasing texture, its grapes coming from cool climate vineyards along the Pacific.

A comprehensive selection of top-quality wines crafted by the iconic Wagner Family of Wines, this is a not to be missed offer for Caymus fans to mix a case or two, stock up on some everyday wine or select a few favorites – with the legacy of the legendary Caymus behind each label at best on the market pricing, every choice is a win-win.

So long and seamless, with tension and focus that just keeps going." The 2022 Riesling Achleiten is likewise a sterling example of hallmark Prager class, with 96-98 points from Moser for its "very enjoyable style with length and ageing potential." 2023 Hartford Old Vine Zinfandel Highwire Vineyard (750ml)
Zinfandel from Russian River, California
B-21 Top Recommendation

The Hartford Family's roots in Sonoma's Russian River Valley are second to none, and they farm some of the Golden State's most prized plots of old-vine Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. Their reference-point range runs the gamut from incredible single-vineyard expressions to some of the greatest bang-for-the-buck values in the appellation.

"A lot of wine for the value," the 2022 Russian River Pinot Noir delivers everything that long-time fans of the estate are looking for. Pure Pinot Noir charm is on full display in vibrant, ripe fruit, silky texture, and, most importantly, superb balance, all at an easy price that makes this undisputed crowd-pleaser accessible to a broad audience. The 2023 Russian River Chardonnay is "a worthy follow-up to the brilliant 2022," displaying classic, richly textured Russian River fruit, vibrant acidic balance, and a luxurious finish that reveals its world-class pedigree. Fans of California Chardonnay may have grown used to overpaying for underwhelming quality, but this 93-point, sub-$20 beauty is ideally suited to buck that trend.

Turning to the estate's wheelhouse, the 95-point 2022 Russian River Valley Old Vine Zinfandel captures everything that makes this cuvée a perennial favorite among fans of great California Zin. Blended from six top-tier old-vine sites spread across the Russian River AVA (several of which make up the estate's highly acclaimed, single-vineyard range), the 2022 is everything you're looking for in a classic California Zin. Speaking of single-vineyard Zins, don't miss the trio of top-flight expressions below, highlighted by the WS96 Highwire Vineyard from the acclaimed 2023 vintage. "Zin rarely shows this much focus and tenstion," notes Wine Spectator, and we couldn't agree more.

Whether you're looking for an easy everyday go-to or a top-tier reference-point expression for the cellar, this range from Hartford has it in spades.

Zin rarely shows this much focus and refinement. Multilayered raspberry and boysenberry flavors are laced with savory anise, dark spices and briar patch as this builds richness and tension toward fine-grained tannins. Drink now through 2035. 253 cases made.

96 points, Tim Fish, Wine Spectator (Aug 2025)

A darker magenta/ruby color, the 2023 Zinfandel Highwire Vineyard has more depth, with notes of espresso, black cherry liqueur, graphite, cracked pepper, and polished leather. The palate is tangy and ripe with full-bodied richness and an underlying coating texture, with ripe tannins and a plush feel on the finish. There’s more depth and complexity to this wine, and I would be interested in revisiting it in a few years as it sheds its more primary fruit and develops more interesting spice and mineral tones. 2022 Domaine Bosquet des Papes Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes (750ml)
Grenache from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

A seductive, smoky red, with real depth to its savory character. The dried strawberry leather and crunchy cherry fruit profile remains fresh and vibrant, studded with sanguine notes of smoked meat and dusty earth layered atop smoldering iron. The tannins are sculpted to a fine grain, bringing elegance to the texture. Delicious now, this has years ahead for those with the patience to cellar. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2026 through 2040.

95 points, Kristen Bieler, Wine Spectator (Mar 2025)

The 2022 Châteauneuf Du Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes is another brilliant wine from this estate. Classic Provençal garrigue, pepper, leather, and assorted darker cherry and blackberry fruit all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied, with a pure, layered, elegant mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, no hard edges, and a great finish. It certainly offers pleasure today, but it’s going to evolve gracefully over the coming 10-15 years. This old-vine cuvée is 86% Grenache and 7% each of Syrah and Mourvèdre coming from the Barbe d'Asne, Les Brusquières, Mont-Redon, and Pignan (nord) lieux-dits. It was not destemmed and was brought up in a mix of foudre, demi-muids, and concrete tanks.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2024)

Checking in at 15.5% alcohol, the delicious 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes is a blend of 86% old-vine Grenache, 7% Syrah and 7% Mourvèdre. It enters the stage with prominent crushed violets, strawberry compote, licorice and black cherry. Meaty components add more nuance. Full-bodied and flamboyant, the 2022 comes across as modern and polished. Enveloped in ripe tannins, it culminates in a bold finale.

"This airy, nuanced Champagne from Bruno Paillard is a delight." - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

From a prominent Champagne family with deep roots in the region, Bruno Paillard is a benchmark name for elegant, finessed wines of unimpeachable quality and class. Seeing as the house owns vineyards all over the prime grand cru real estate of Champagne, including Le Mesnil, Oger, Bouzy, and Verzenay, it's no surprise that even the entry-level Premiere Cuvee is a flat-out gem in its price point.

We recently revisited this 94-point, perennial best-seller ourselves and were immediately reminded of why it's such a successful hit among Champagne aficionados. A blend of all three Champagne varietals with a good portion of the wine coming from a perpetual reserve dating to 1985, the Premiere Cuvee boasts outstanding vinous complexity and intensity while remaining true to the pinpoint precision and effortless grace that mark all of Paillard's wines. "One of my favorite entry level wines," notes Jeb Dunnuck's Champagne critic Audrey Frick, "this consistently over-delivers." Classic and rounded on the nose, with aromas of brioche, peach, hazelnut, and fresh flowers, the palate is supple and balanced, with full-bodied richness, a weightless feel, a refined and elegant mousse, and lasting notes of citrus oils through the finish. One of my favorite entry level wines, this consistently over-delivers and is going to drink well over the coming 8-10 years.

"With ultra-fine tannins, flawless overall balance, and a great finish," notes Jeb Dunnuck, "it's a gem in the vintage." Finally, fans and collectors should not overlook the absolutely pristine 2023 Pure Roussanne, a 97-point tour de force that is everything as advertised - pure Roussanne varietal character that shows this revered white Rhône varietal in all its glory.

This in-stock trio is further proof that the domaine should be on any serious Rhône enthusiasts short list, as these expressions are some of the most polished and artfully crafted offerings you'll find in the region.

It's great to taste the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape Pure Roussanne beside the Pure Clairette. You get a real sense of the difference in these two varieties, with the Clairette providing a more focused, mineral-laced style and the Roussanne showing more richness and breadth. Medium gold-hued, with a powerful nose of honeyed orchard fruits, flower oil, orange blossom, and exotic spices, this beauty hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a deep, layered mouthfeel, integrated acidity, and a great finish. While Clairette is the shiny new toy for Rhône lovers out there, this shows that readers shouldn't skimp on seeking out the more Roussanne-dominated cuvées.

"Luca De Ferrari and the team at Boscarelli make some of the most beautiful wines in the appellation." - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Of course, Montalcino is ground zero in Italy for Sangiovese, but savvy Italian insiders know that some of the varietal's best bangs for the buck can be found in Montepulciano. Situated southwest of Chianti, Montepulciano's slightly warmer climate means there's no shortage of ripeness in its wines, but the sandy, well-draining soils also imbue them with striking minerality that's more intense than in the wines of Chianti or even Montalcino. This trio from Boscarelli highlights one of the region's most accomplished estates firing on all cylinders.

The 94-point 2021 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano "is a total pleasure to the senses" according to Vinous, offering the elevated terroir expression that one typically finds in the finest examples from further north. The estate's benchmark pedigree, however, is on full display in the two Riserva bottlings below. The 2020 Riserva is a "sleek yet solidly built red," demonstrating the age-worthy quality of a great Vino Nobile according toWine Spectator's 95-point review. Also notching 95 points fromWine Spectator, the 2018 Riserva Sotto Casa is a stellar expression of the estate's most prized plot planted to high density in alluvial, red clay soils. A blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, it's a captivating example of what makes Montepulciano such a dynamic region,

If you're familiar with names like Avignonesi or DEI, you'll want to add Boscarelli to your list, as they're right on par with the benchmark names of Montepulciano, and if you're seeking top-flight Sangiovese expressions from outside the box, these are your next go-to discoveries.

Mint and eucalyptus shade the cherry and strawberry fruit in this sleek yet solidly built red, with a mineral note underlying it all. Balanced, this needs time for all the elements to integrate fully, yet there's still very positive energy driving the long finish. Best from 2027 through 2045. 850 cases made.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Oct 2024)

The nose is crisp and faintly medicinal, yet inviting, with aromas of blackberry tea, black cherries, pencil shavings and eucalyptus. On the palate, more blackberries are balanced by emergent undertones of herbs and earth, while that fresh medicinal nature lingers through a dark chocolate finish. Dense, firm tannins hold a solid foundation.

94 points, Danielle Callegari, Wine Enthusiast (Sep 2024)

This shows good depth and ripeness in its dark-cherry and black-raspberry fruit, those flavors accented by notes of lavender, thyme and singed orange peel. The iron-tinged tannins lend a coolness to the flavors, which remain balanced and fresh through the finish.

93 points, Stephanie Johnson, Wine & Spirits (Mar 2024)

A lightly chewy Vino Nobile with berry, bark and dried mushroom character. Full-bodied with some fresh acidity underneath the tannin backbone. It’s a little rough at the end, but should soften nicely in a year or two.

93 points, James Suckling (Apr 2024)

The 2022 Fanucchi Wood Road Zinfandel Old Vine is medium to deep garnet-purple in color. Notes of juicy blackberries and baked plums on the nose open out to suggestions of unsmoked cigars, dried rose, tilled soil, and wild fungi. The full-bodied palate is dense and muscular, with a rock solid structure of grainy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing long and earthy. The vines were planted over 100 years ago and have been trained up to chest level to increase air circulation and sun exposure for the berries.

96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Apr 2024)

A briar patch in a glass, this is a zesty, old-school Zin, with wild berry and black cherry flavors framed by chunky chocolate, espresso and green peppercorn accents. Ends with appealingly rustic tannins. Drink now through 2035. 244 cases made.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Hartford Zinfandel soars with notes of rose oil, star anise, kirsch, and raspberry pie leading to a core of stewed red plums and incense. The medium to full-bodied palate has a refreshing backbone and lightly chewy texture, finishing with lovely purity and a red berry lift. Don and Jennifer Hartford tend this head-trained vineyard in the backyard of their home. Planted over 100 years ago, the Hartford Vineyard’s vines are the lowest yielding of all of their Old Vine Zinfandel vineyards.

96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Apr 2024)

Magenta/purple-colored, the 2022 Zinfandel Hartford Vineyard is ripe with notes of black cherry liqueur, licorice, violets, and blue fruit coming through. Full-bodied and ripe, it has good mouthwatering fresh acidity, fine tannin structure, and good energy. I like this one a lot. Drink it over the next 10-12 years.

95 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Jun 2024)

Deeply structured yet agile on its feet, with rich raspberry, roasted anise and cracked pepper flavors that fan out on the detailed finish. Drink now through 2032. 267 cases made.
