Anything rare is always a treat, but densely planted Sangiovese vines are very rare indeed, especially on collapsed volcanoes. How much of this is suggestion is always hard to know, but it sure seems to exalt the sexy ferrous nature of Sangiovese, with the taste of the edge of a Swiss knife that just cut through the peel of a blood orange with the leaf still attached.

The 2021 Perlato del Bosco shows how appealing this vintage can be, even among mid-tier offerings. Dark, juicy and wonderfully expressive, the Perlato has so much to offer. Dark cherry, plum, espresso, incense and licorice abound in this racy, super-expressive Maremma Sangiovese. The 2021 is impeccable and delicious.

Orange blossom, black cherries, and hibiscus flower. Some slate and lead pencil aromas. Medium body with fresh acidity and firm and racy tannins. Polished and very pretty. Pure sangiovese. Drink or hold.

Tua Rita's varietal Sangiovese from the Colline Metallifere in Maremma has a wild character: full of funky, spicy, earthy and medicinal herb notes with a core of ripe cherry and pomegranate. In the mouth it combines concentration and verticality, the richness of the fruit given texture and airiness from the large oak vats it matures in. Fresh and alive, the tannins are fine and chalky and the fruit is quite compact and deep rather than light and perfumed, and so this will suit roast meats nicely.
