Crafted in the heart of coastal Maremma near the Tyrrhenian Sea, the rich and luxurious 93 pt. 2021 I Greppi Greppicante offers fragrant decadent fruit hinting of wild herbs with layers of lush tannins, a powerful, Bordeaux-influenced blend and a true Super Tuscan bargain priced to reach for again and again.
Established as a joint project between the Landini Family of Fattoria Viticcio in Chianti and the Cancellieri-Scaramuzzi family, I Greppi is located in Bolgheri around Castagneto Carducci about halfway between high profile producers Guado al Tasso and Grattamaco, overseen by Alessandro Landini under the ownership of an investment group since 2017. Located below the towering hills of the Bolgheri Amphitheater a few kilometers from the region's iconic cypress-lined Viale dei Cipressi, the vineyard is planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc in Bolgheri's mix of sand and clay soils, benefiting from the biodiverse effects of two nearby lakes combined with sea breezes and elevation that extend ripening and yield rich concentration. A blend of mostly Merlot with Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2020 Greppicante was fermented in a mix of stainless steel and French oak and aged for 12 months in second and third year French oak barriques followed by six months in bottle, its lush powerful core of Merlot fruit balanced by crisp integrated acidity and refined tannins that promise an intriguing evolution over the next decade.
Boasting "tons of Maremma personality at far more accessible prices than so many other wines in the region" according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous, the bold and appealing 93 pt. 2021 I Greppi Greppicante offers a winning combination of drinkability and age-ability for Italian wine lovers seeking a classic Super Tuscan at an outstanding value to savor for years to come.
A saturated red/magenta color, the 2021 Greppicante is ripe with aromas of black olive, cassis, sandalwood, and toasted rosemary. Fleshy and full-bodied, it expands on the palate, with ripe tannins and fresh acidity. A noble and very serious Rosso structured for the long haul, I would hold this one a couple of years and drink 2025-2040, as its tannins are really holding on at this stage.

Blackcurrant and rose petal with some lavender and sage flower undertones. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins that are polished and beautiful. Orange peel undertone. Subtle and refined. Very drinkable but better in 2023.

This 2021 I Greppi Bolgheri Rosso Greppicante has a youthful, vivid ruby color. The nose is still a little unformed, hesitating between smoky, bitter cherry, flint and oak spice. There’s a very elegant weight and texture on the palate and it flows beautifully without feeling heavy or over extracted. There is just a lovely ease about this wine that is punctuated by slightly sharp, tart cherry flavors and bitter cherry notes. The tannins are elegant and there is a vivid thread of acidity running through it. This is a tasty, sappy lively, wine of elegant proportions with a lovely, lingering finish.
