"This is the wine I like to drink. It's rich, it's flavorful, it's very fresh, and it's got the structure of a Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.”
Winemaker Andy Erickson
Legendary winemaker Andy Erickson knows a few things about Napa Cabs, his illustrious resume reading like a who’s who of the region’s top producers including Harlan, Staglin and Mayacamas just to name a few. Perhaps best known for crafting two 100 pt. Screaming Eagle vintages, the 93 pt. 2020 Leviathan is another stellar release from rockstar winemaker Erickson, a powerful blend boasting rich, fresh fruit hinting of wild herbs and earthy spice with a silky, smooth finish, now priced to deliver an equally powerful bang for the buck.
Crafted from an ever-changing proprietary mix intended to showcase the best characteristics of each vintage, Leviathan was born of Erickson’s desire to create a bold and appealing red blend free of the rigid requirements of California’s appellation system, working in partnership with Agustin Huneeus, the passionate vintner behind Quintessa. Sourced from some of California’s top grape growing regions including Moon Mountain and Coombsville, the 2020 Leviathan is a proprietary blend of mostly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Petite Verdot and Cabernet Franc, balancing layered aromatics and rich ripe fruit with substantial, supple tannins. Erickson aged the full-bodied 2020 Leviathan in 25% new French oak for up to 23 months, yielding a finely tuned blend that’s rich and full on the palate with a bright uplifted finish, deliciously approachable now yet structured to evolve in the cellar.
Called a “seriously affordable, serious California blend” by the Wine Advocate, Andy Erickson's Leviathan reflects his decades' long expertise in crafting exceptional, terroir-driven Napa Cabs, the robust and immensely appealing 93 pt. 2020 Leviathan an easy to reach for red blend from one of Napa’s premier winemakers at an easy to like price. |
