“The 2020 Clos Floridene is terrific. Bright and punchy to the core”

Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Built on the legacy of one of Bordeaux’s most esteemed winemakers, the appealing 93 pt. 2020 Clos Floridene Rouge boasts vibrant elegant fruit flavors hinting of savory herbs with layered, substantial tannins, named by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson as one of her Top 20 Great Value Bordeaux of the outstanding 2020 vintage and offered at an amazing under $20 price for stocking up to enjoy without hesitation.

Part of a family-run portfolio which also includes famed Sauternes producer Chateau Doisy Daene, Clos Floridene was established by the iconic enologist Denis Dubourdieu in 1982 with a small 2 hectare plot, the name coming from combining Denis and his wife Florence’s names and now run by his two sons, Jean-Jacques and Fabrice since his passing in 2016. Described by Forbes as a “titan in the world of wine,” Denis is renowned for revolutionizing the production of the white wines of Bordeaux and consulting for some of Bordeaux’s and the world’s most prestigious wineries including Cheval Blanc, Haut-Bailly, Burgundy’s Jadot and Piedmont’s Pio Cesare, his reputation for exceptionalism causing the critic Robert Parker Jr. to declare that anything associated with Dubourdieu’s name “is of undeniably high, high quality.” Located mostly on the limestone plateau of Pujols sur Ciron near Barsac, the Clos Floridene vineyards span 40 hectares, with 17.3 hectares of vines for the Rouge planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon and about a quarter Merlot in a mix of gravel, clay and limestone, farmed using organic practices that the Dubourdieu’s describe as ‘grown like a garden.’ A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot in the 2020 vintage, winemaker Jean-Jacques aged the 2020 Clos Floridene Rouge for 12 months in a third new French oak barrels in the Chateau’s new state of the art winery, yielding lush, expressive fruit with fresh, energetic tannins that will continue to evolve over the next years in the cellar.

From “an incredibly exciting vintage” according to critic Antonio Galloni that’s “brimming with phenomenal wines at all levels,” the exceptional 93 pt. 2020 Clos Floridene reflects the rich legacy of its founder Denis Dubourdieu, crafted with high quality fruit and expert attention to detail and a top 2020 Bordeaux value in original wooden cases of six ready to cellar and enjoy.

This is tasty, with an appealing smack of damson, black cherry, cocoa bean, cola, liquorice and fennel. Plenty of textured, grainy tannins, savoury but with real character; One of the values of the vintage, Jean-Jacques Dubourdieu is doing an excellent job of continuing the work of his late father Denis. Ambassadeur de Graves, with a new winery as of this 2020 vintage.

93 points, Jane Anson (Mar 2023)
