Home to some of Spain's top power producers like Vega Sicilia and Pingus, Ribera del Duero's Valderiz crafts red wines that pack a powerful punch, their lesser-known status offering value pricing that makes them a smart buy for everyday enjoyment. Originally crafted in collaboration with Remelluri's iconic winemaker Telmo Rodriguez using the estate's top grapes, the impressive 95pt 2018 Valderiz Ribera del Duero is full bodied, concentrated and complex, with fresh dark ripe fruit, earthy spice and lush ageworthy tannins.
About a two hours' drive north of Madrid, Ribera del Duero extends 70 miles along the Duero River flanked by vineyards on both sides, with cool mornings and long warm days throughout the summer providing an optimal growing season for the local clone of Tempranillo known as Tinta del Pais. Launched by the pioneering grower Tomas Esteban in Roa in 1997 just after the creation of the Ribera DO, today Valderiz boasts 60 hectares of organically farmed vines averaging 35 years of age and planted in a range of soils spread over 35 unique parcels. Now under the direction of second-generation winemaker Ricardo Esteban, the 2018 Valderiz Ribera del Duero was fermented in stainless with indigenous yeasts, then aged for 24 months in a mix of mostly new French oak with 20% American oak contributing nuances of spice before bottling.
From a region producing "consistently rich, pure expressions of Tinto Fino with elegance, precision and the ability to age" according to the Wine Enthusiast, the exceptional Valderiz terroir that Telmo Rodriguez recognized over two decades ago continues to yield a muscular Ribera del Duero that balances lush, ripe fruit with juicy acidity. Showcasing consistent quality that has garnered 90+ point ratings from the Wine Spectator over the last five vintages, the outstanding 2018 Valderiz Ribera del Duero will appeal to fans of Spanish wines and lovers of big, bold reds alike. |
