Frenchman Julien Fayard is the winemaker at Purlieu. He grew up working at his uncle’s Chateau in Provence where his interest in wine was set for life. Leaving Provence he traveled to Bordeaux working at both Chateau Lafite-Rothschild in Pauillac and Smith Haut Laffite in Pessac-Leognan – a most serious foundation in Cabernet and the understanding the great wine is made in the vineyard. Before Purlieu, Julien worked at Quintessa and then five years as director of Atelier Melka gaining an intimate understanding of Napa Valley while connecting with top growers dedicated to quality – Andy Beckstoffer being one of those. Beckstoffer provides Purlieu fruit for three of their top bottlings; Georges III, To Kalon, and Missouri Hopper. Collectables indeed. |
