Attending the launch of a new wine project called Almaviva hosted by the Baroness Philippine de Rothschild at SOBE's Delano Hotel in 1998 – it wasn't clear what forces the wines of the Andes would bring to our wine world two decades later. Most propitious was this collaboration of Chateau Mouton-Rothschild and the Chilean winery Concha y Toro – their flagship Don Melchor. Almaviva isn't the only Chilean property too have joined the 100 point club; both 2014 Clos Apalta and 2015 Seña are members too. Momentum is building in Chile as world class wines are emerging. It is happening now.

Stunning aromas of blackcurrant, stone, blueberry and licorice. Also iodine. Floral. Perfumed. Full body, fantastic density of fruit and ripe tannins. It goes on for minutes on the palate with such energy and focus. Touch of chewiness on the finish. A complex and complete wine that delivers a generosity with firmness. Drink in 2021 but already a classic to drink.

100 points, James Suckling (May 2017)
