Grower producer Dominique Moreau hand crafts her Champagne as singular expressions of place, each vineyard-driven cuvee from a designated vintage attracting a devoted following that routinely scoops them up on release. Named one of the "Top 10 Estates to Know," by Decanter, fans of Grower Champagne won't want to miss the 2019 Marie Courtin Cuvee Resonance and 2015 Marie Courtin Cuvee Efflorescence, two gorgeous and truly artisanal Blanc de Noir Champagnes produced by the talented, quality driven Dominique Moreau in small amounts from her biodynamically farmed Pinot Noir.
Naming her estate for her grandmother Marie Courtin, grower producer Dominique Moreau has been making single vintage Champagnes from her tiny 2.5 hectare vineyard since 2005, all crafted with no added sugar in an extra dry style known as "zero dosage." Located in Champagne's southernmost region that's geographically closer to Chablis than Epernay, Dominique farms Marie Courtin's low-yielding estate vineyard with biodynamic principles, its southern location sharing Chablis' warmer temperatures and Kimmeridgian limestone-based soil and yielding richly textured Pinot Noir with matching acidity. Isolating parcels on the south facing slope by variations in the soils, Dominique sourced the 2019 Resonance from Pinot Noir grown in the mineral-rich, fossilized seashell soils at the top of the slope, while the fruit for the 2015 Efflorescence came from the richer clay at the bottom, employing a minimal intervention in the cellar including the addition of little to no sulfur. Fermented with native yeasts cultivated from her vineyard, the vibrant and energetic 2019 Champagne Marie Courtin Cuvee Resonance was vinified and aged sur lie in stainless steel for 24 months, revealing bright fruit and pure minerality with impressive length and fine lively bubbles. Employing used barriques with native yeasts for both fermentations, the powerful, age worthy 94 pt. 2015 Champagne Marie Courtin Cuvee Efflorescence was aged on the lees for three years, showing a vibrant core of rich fruit hinting of briny minerality with a gentle, creamy mousse born of the extended lees aging.
Crafting a "stunning range of champagnes" according to Antonio Galloni of Vinous that are both "thrilling" and "deeply satisfying," these exquisite terroir-driven Champagnes from Marie Courtin boast an intensity and minerality rooted in Dominque Moreau's meticulous vineyard practices and precision in the cellar, two exquisite hand-crafted vintage grower Champagnes produced in limited amounts at an appealing price. |
