I began using B21 about 2 years ago. Wish I had found them sooner. They represent about 70% to 80 % of my liquor buys. Only the odd things are purchased elsewhere. It's no secret that the 2024 Loire vintage tested everyone's mettle, all the way up to the very top of the hierarchy, so when our Loire buyer found this exceptional offering from Pascal & Nicolas Reverdy, it was a no-brainer to get everything we could get our hands on. Les Coutes is a single parcel of 50-year-old vines on Kimmeridgian limestone that has a reputation for producing densely textured, weighty wines, and that is certainly borne out in 2024, despite the incredibly challenging vintage conditions. As B-21 buyer Andrew Kitz explains, "Many of the 2023s and 2024s I’ve tasted have shown an obvious lack of depth and texture, but the 2024 Les Coutes is not at all short in either department, somehow even outpacing another domaine’s 2022 Chêne Marchand that I tasted along side it." The 2024 Les Coutes shows "pure Sancerre vitality" on the nose along with a "succulent, juicy, textural" palate that conveys everything Sancerre fans are looking for in a top-tier single-vineyard expression. As we said, we took everything we could get, and it wasn't much, so don't miss out on one of the smartest Sancerre buys in our inventory.

What a stunning effort from Reverdy in the difficult 2024 vintage! Many of the 2023s and 2024s I’ve tasted have shown an obvious lack of depth and texture, but the 2024 Les Coutes is not at all short in either department, somehow even outpacing another domaine’s 2022 Chene Marchand that I tasted along side it. The nose is pure Sancerre vitality, with all kinds of vivid citrus character, as well gooseberry and kumquat, popping with real authority. The underlying soil tones are beautifully delineated, and a floral uplift of lemon verbena and jasmine adds undeniable elegance. The palate truly where the 2024 really stands out, with flavors of lemon curd, lime zest, green apple skin, and vibrant, flinty minerality. The succulent, juicy, textural mid-palate is simply wonderful and a true rarity for the vintage. The finish carries more flinty gunsmoke with the pure fruit, framed by incredibly precise acidity. Hats off to the domaine – whatever they did, it worked like a charm.

Crochet’s appellation bottling is a perfectly pleasing, quintessential expression that will satisfy any fan of classic Sancerre. It’s immediately charming off the bat, with pure, flinty minerality and lemon pith giving nice terroir signature on the nose. Clean and steely, the aromatics take on fragrant white floral tones along with lemongrass and raspberry leaf notes for added complexity. The medium-weight palate is built around bright, well-integrated, citrusy acidity and a clean mineral core, with slightly tropical flavors of melon rind and green banana playing out on a medium-length finish. All in all, an extremely well-crafted entry-level wine from an under-the-radar Sancerre domaine that you should get to know.

The 2023 Sancerre “Chêne Marchand” from the Crochet family is a superb example of this fine vineyard. The bouquet is bright and complex, hopping from the glass in a mix of lime, green apple, gooseberry, complex limestone minerality, a dollop of grassiness and a topnote of white flowers. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, crisp and youthfully structured, with a superb core of fruit, great mineral undertow, a fine spine of acidity and grip and excellent precision and balance on the long and complex finish. This is of course very tasty already, but it is still clearly youthful and more generosity on the palate will emerge if the wine is given a bit of bottle aging to allow it to fully blossom.

The label of the Henri Bourgeois Jadis declares this wine 'a reminder of the sea that was once and is no more', a reference to the shallow sea that once covered Sancerre and has left its traces in fossilised seashells in the soil. The wine does indeed smell of a bracing sea breeze. The palate is centred around a beautiful mineral acidity that derives from the complex blend of soils. The vines grow on south-facing slopes of Kimmeridgian marls, flint and siliceous clay in the village of Amigny, and the grapes are picked by hand. This is a full-bodied, full-flavoured and highly characterful wine that will not disappoint. Ages on its lees in used oak for a year.

Girard’s east-facing La Garenne site is known for ripening well, and in the cool 2024 vintage that advantage pays off, not because the wine is particularly ripe, but that’s it overcame the difficult conditions that got the best of many other sites and growers. The 2024 has an elegant, high-toned example all the way, with pitched citrus blossom and aromatic gardenia notes on the nose, and a soft, chalky frame underneath (again, a hallmark of this vineyard). The palate is equally elegant and graceful, with the chalk taking a more prominent position. Flashes of tart green apple, lime, and lemon zest come through, with a floral finish of medium length. It’s a very pretty, easy-going, and approachable Sancerre, which is why it always seems to sell out quickly when we get our allocation.

Pierre Morin’s Premices is a classic example of Sancerre Rouge that isn’t trying to be anything else. Sourced from two plots, one on stony limestone and the other on white clay marls, the 2022 showcases the best of both terroirs. An aromatic profile of crunchy, vibrant red fruit comes on with real immediacy in notes of tart cherry, raspberry, and tart cranberry. Crushed rose petal and a dusty white pepper note segue to the chalky undertones that convey the terroir – bracing chalk and crushed gravel – but it stops just short of being rustic. Flavors of vibrant cherry are a bit darker than the aromatics, balanced by currant and more pure raspberry. The chalky foundation is really well executed, and the structured, firm tannins give clear voice to the clay-soil component of the wine. Proper, authentic Sancerre Pinot Noir right here.
