I began using B21 about 2 years ago. Wish I had found them sooner. They represent about 70% to 80 % of my liquor buys. Only the odd things are purchased elsewhere. Once you use them you will be hooked. Inventory, professional staff, quick shipping and competative pricing are what I really appreciate. Try them, you have nothing to lose and much to gain.

Penfolds Grandfather Rare Tawny Port (750ml)
Port from Barossa, Australia

Fully aged but bright tawny; the very complex Xmas cake bouquet has all manner of Asian spices asking to be heard; the palate is very luscious yet magically made elegant by its burnt sugar acidity.

97 points, Halliday Wine Companion (Jul 2013)

Rich, complex and fragrant of nuts and vanilla, amber colored, viscous, with intensity and a clean finish. Harmonious, mature, and luscious.

2021 Penfolds Max's Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Shiraz from South Eastern Australia, Australia

91WE

This inky-hued Cab-Shiraz blend is a broody bottling, with a savory, black olive and dusty library-book note to the raspberry and black-cherry fruit. There's a minty, earthy nuance too, plus a subtle polish of mealy, chocolatey oak. The powerful palate is densely packed with dark fruit and spice, cinched by chiseled tannins. While intended as Penfolds's more approachable range, this vintage is a big, chewy one.

"Really impressive already, with more to come; the star buy from this year’s collection." - Decanter

There's not much we can or need to say about Penfolds' latest iteration of their smash-hit, best-selling Shiraz. The 2023 Bin 28 picks up right where all the previous vintages left off with a sterling critical line that includes stout praise from all corners. This wine is always a quintessential expression of Aussie Shiraz, thanks to Penfolds' complete mastery of their vineyards and winemaking. As always, everything is so impeccably balanced and composed that it's still a shock how good the Bin 28 is when you consider its sub-$25 price. All the components work in such harmony that it's easy to lose sight of what a value it is, to the point where it's not just delicious now, but it will also cruise for a long time in the cellar. When was the last time you spent $25 on a wine you'll still be enjoying ten or 15 years from now? Exactly. So make some room in the cellar and load up, because the 2023 Bin 28 is a hit for fans of Penfolds and any great Australian Shiraz.

95AWC 94WS 94D 93WA 93JS

Deep crimson with a strong aromatic profile of blackberry, black cherry and blueberry studded with mixed spice, blackforest cake, roasting meats, panforte, dark chocolate and earth. Plenty of depth and latent fruit power with this release; perhaps a little more power than last year's model, with fine, strong tannins supporting the fruit beautifully. A strong release for the Bin 28 Shiraz.

95 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion (Jul 2025)

Offers an exuberant mix of fresh huckleberry, boysenberry and blackberry syrup, plus framboise. Accents of toasted green tea, milk chocolate and rose petal emerge, along with clove, apricot and cardamom, all on a juicy, approachable frame, with dense tannins that never get in the way of the concentrated flavors. Drink now through 2038. 9,937 cases imported.

94 points, MaryAnn Worobiec, Wine Spectator (Dec 2025)

Penfolds’ first Bin wine, from 1959, this used to be named for the Kalimna Vineyard from which it was solely sourced. Now it is a multi-region blend, always dominated by Barossa Valley fruit – this year 42%, along with Padthaway (31%) and McLaren Vale (27%) – to showcase ripe, powerful warm-climate South Australian Shiraz. Always matured for 12 months in American oak hogsheads, there’s more new wood this year (15%), but it wears it beautifully, and that firm tannic backbone promises to carry this already approachable wine through the next two decades. Mulberry pie aromas – inviting with lots of vanilla and sweet baking spices – joined by savoury olive brine, tarmac and liquorice. The fresh but concentrated palate has more of the same, along with dark chocolate-coated cherries. Really impressive already, with more to come; the star buy from this year’s collection. Released at £30.

94 points, Tina Gellie, Decanter (Jun 2025)

The 2023 season in South Australia was wetter than either vintage either side of it, and the wines, if farmed well (yields managed, disease managed, ripeness achieved), have captured the detail and levity that these conditions can be responsible for. On balance, I've liked the 2023 Barossa/McLaren Vale reds that I have tasted so far. I've liked them more than those of the 2017 vintage, which experienced similar conditions. Here, the 2023 Bin 28 is rich and savory, the oak—wholly American oak, 15% new—sits atop the fruit on the front palate, but the fruit emerges and plumes through the middle palate and finish. A lighter release of this wine, it is still structured but not weighty. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under cork.

93 points, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate (Jul 2025)

This is an Australian classic that has been made every year since 1959. Aromas of blackberries, dark chocolate, crushed blueberries and dried herbs. The palate is full-bodied with firmly framed tannins, bright acidity and a savory and dark-fruited finish. Drink or hold.

Plum, cassis and wild blackberry flavors are firm and dense, with hints of earth, dried herbs and black tea, plus cigar box details that linger. Drink now. 19,960 cases imported.

89 points, MaryAnn Worobiec, Wine Spectator (Dec 2024)

This is a broody, densely packed bottling of Max's Cab, with a good lick of cedar and a toasted coconut oak notes alongside the blackberry, blood plum and dried mint ones. Concentrated, with luscious dark fruit on the palate, there's a powerful line of raspy tannins which veer towards astringency on the finish.

2022 Penfolds Bin 389 Cabernet Sauvignon / Shiraz (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from South Australia, Australia

97D 95V 95WE 95AWC

The happy marriage of Cabernet Sauvignon (51%) with Shiraz (49%) rarely looks as cosy or integrated than in this stellar example. A generous mid-palate shows off fine long fruit flavours from the slow-ripening 2022 vintage, with ruddy Shiraz ripeness in step with the more tannic bite of Cabernet Sauvignon’s blackberry and mulberry adding a moreish savoury note. With 36% new American oak hogsheads used for 12 months’ maturation, there’s just enough oak-influenced spice to provide adequate seasoning to the deep, pure flavours.

97 points, David Sly, Decanter (Jul 2024)

This is a delightful 2022 Bin 389, a blend of 51% Cabernet and 49% Shiraz fruit from McLaren Vale, Coonawarra, Barossa Valley, Padthaway and Wrattonbully. The 2022 is a benchmark vintage - effortless with effusive aromas of cassis, licorice and blackberry topped by a nice touch of graphite. Classically styled, with a firm base of tannins and vibrant flavors that nicely balance the finish that just goes on and on. A little shy right now, but everything is in its perfect place for a long and distinguished future.

95 points, Angus Hughson, Vinous (Aug 2024)

Rich, inky-hued and packed with layers of aromas (think: plush blackberries and violets backed by more savory notes of dried herbs, tar and gravel, and a smoky, charred, pan scrapings nuance), Bin 389 is an incredibly polished, silky wine. Dense and powerful, yes, but with a satiny cushion of dark fruit that rises up to meet the monstrous tannins, taming them into a classy-as-hell wine to drink now with decanter and protein at hand, or to cellar for several decades.

95 points, Christina Pickard, Wine Enthusiast (Mar 2025)

Penfolds "Baby Grange" is in fine form for the 2022 release and, for me, sits at the confluence of both traditional and contemporary winemaking. Its cellaring track record is outstanding and I think this release will age beautifully thanks to its classic structure and impressive fruit depth. It's all dark plum and berry with a sheen of mahogany, sweet oak spice, cigar lounge, milk chocolate, dried cranberry and pressed violets. Layered and filigreed with compact fine-grained tannins and a sense of grace and poise as it slowly sails off. It's a ripper.

2018 Penfolds Grange (750ml)
Syrah from South Australia, Australia

Counted among a handful of iconic wines instantly recognizable by a single word, pioneering Penfolds winemaker Max Schubert began his secretive experiment in the 1950's to craft a highly distinctive Shiraz blending grapes from across South Australia's best vineyards with techniques considered unconventional at the time, initially calling it Grange Hermitage and eventually changing it simply to "Grange." Described as "unquestionably Australia's benchmark wine" by Vinous critic Josh Raynolds, this selection of highly rated Penfolds Grange vintages available in a range of formats is being offered at special, one-time pricing that Aussie Shiraz fans and collectors of the world's best wines will want to secure without hesitation.

Among the first to establish vineyards in South Australia's Adelaide, Dr. Christopher Penfold and his wife Mary established Penfolds in 1844, naming their stone cottage situated among the vines The Grange and eventually growing to become one of the country's largest wine producers. Now celebrating the 70th anniversary of its first release, continuity has played a big part in the overwhelming success of Penfolds Grange, with only three other winemakers after Schubert crafting its signature style. As Chief Winemaker for Penfolds since 1989, Peter Gago has carried on the Grange tradition of blending mainly Shiraz and usually (although not always as in 2017) a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon from multiple vineyards across multiple regions, a practice which minimizes the impact of vintage variations, and ages Grange in large casks of 100% new American oak with nearly four more years in the bottle, yielding elegant spiced dark fruit balanced with precise acidity and velvety, forceful tannins ensuring decades of evolution. Described as "a massive wine" by the Wine Spectator's Harvey Steiman, the 97 pt. 1995 Penfolds Grange has enjoyed over two decades of impeccable aging and is ready to enjoy, "majestic in its proportions, combining power and grace in equal measure" with a finish that "echoes all day and night." Available in magnums, the 99 pt. 2012 Penfolds Grange is "unquestionably a stonking great Grange!" according to the Wine Advocate's Lisa Perrotti-Brown with a finish that's "epically long." Declaring the 100 pt. 2014 Grange "doesn't disappoint," Jeb Dunnuck describes it as "unquestionably the reference point wine for Australia," while calling the 100 pt. 2015 Grange "a monster of wine and one of those rare wines that blends power and elegance perfectly." Described by the Wine Spectator's MaryAnn Worobiec as "memorable, complex, aromatic and explosively deep," the 98 pt. 2017 Penfolds Grange is both elegant and muscular boasting "a stature and presence possessed only by Grange" according to Aussie expert Tyson Stelzer of the Halliday Wine Companion, only the seventh Grange ever made with 100% Shiraz.

Described as "Shiraz at its finest" by Inside Bordeaux's Jane Anson, the mythical and highly collectible Penfolds Grange sets the standard for Australian Shiraz, these selections all top-rated vintages guaranteeing enjoyment for decades and certain to be a focal point in any collector's cellar.

100JS 100WI 99WA 98V 98WS 98WE

A robust Grange from a lauded vintage, this wields sheer power with such compelling prowess. Uncompromising Grange. There are rich blackberries and plums on offer, together with brazen oak and abundant notes of blackcurrants, black cherries, charcoal, cola and hard brown spices. So fleshy and intense. Dark-chocolate and cocoa-powder aromas and flavors here, too. The tannins are polished and long, extruding deep into the finish and holding endlessly. Dark chocolate, black cherry, dark plum and more. Impressive. Brazen. One of the great Granges that will drink magnificently for decades to come.

100 points, James Suckling (Dec 2022)

Composed of 97% Shiraz with a 3% splash of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Grange was sourced from the Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, and Clare Valley. It was aged for 18 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads (slightly larger than the classic Bordeaux barriques). It sports an opaque purple-black color, while the nose begins as an impenetrable wall of blueberry pie and blackberry preserves. Patience and vigorous swirling eventually unlock an underlying perfume of Indian spices, cedar chest, sassafras, fragrant soil, and cracked black peppercorns, with slowly emerging wafts of licorice, charcuterie, and rose oil. The assertive, full-bodied palate is taut and muscular, featuring very firm, super tight-knit tannins and seamless acidity, finishing long, long, long. Undoubtedly one of the great modern era Granges, this 2018 is like a hypothetical blend of the concentrated, powerful 2013, albeit with the latent expressiveness of the fabulously opulent, flamboyant 2008. Try to keep your hands off this multifaceted powerhouse for 10-15 years and then drink it over the next 50 years+ or bequeath it to your favored next of kin.

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Jul 2022)

This wine comes with high expectations—as does the vintage. The 2018 vintage across South Australia (and cheekily, we could probably extend the accolade to all of Australia) was excellent. It was warm, but without incident, and responsible for powerfully ripe, serious wines. Many producers made some of their best wines in this vintage. So here, to the 2018 Grange: there is spiced raspberry, lashings of salted licorice, red curry paste, layers of forest berries, rendered lamb fat and crushed pink peppercorns to start. In the mouth, the tannins close around the fruit with the same polish and seamlessness as the 2008, possibly the 2004? Very different vintages, but there is a textural similarity for me. This is polished and glossy and so very pretty. It contains 3% Cabernet Sauvignon this year, and 69% Barossa, 18% McLaren Vale and the balance from Clare Valley. Each of the regions brings with it its own characteristics. Barossa brings the red dirt, blood, deli meat and rust. McLaren Vale brings the plush purple fruits with a side of meat and licorice. Clare brings the polish, the opulence and the velvet texture. With their powers combined, this is an extraordinary Grange. One of the true greats, which will only get better as it ages.

99 points, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate (Jul 2022)

Inky, bright-rimmed violet. A kaleidoscopic, penetrating bouquet evokes ripe black and blue fruit preserves, espresso, cola, incense, coconut and Moroccan spices, along with a smoky mineral topnote. Shows superb clarity and mineral lift to the sweet, deeply concentrated black currant, bitter cherry, dark chocolate, fruitcake and mocha flavors, which are sharpened by a spicy element. A vein of juicy acidity adds support and drives a wonderfully long, smoky finish that leaves a suave floral note behind.

98 points, Josh Raynolds, Vinous (Sep 2022)

A remarkable wine, bursting with complexity and intensity but on a polished, mouthcoating and juicy frame, which makes this easy to enjoy now. Features chicory, sarsaparilla, dark chocolate and salted caramel notes that mingle with ripe black cherry, framboise and huckleberry flavors, backed by hints of almond paste and savory details of cured meat and fresh-crushed rosemary that linger on the epic finish. Drink now through 2045. 426 cases imported.

98 points, MaryAnn Worobiec, Wine Spectator (Dec 2022)

The latest release, from the warm '18 vintage, of Penfolds's most iconic wine delivers on all it promises. Even sans decanting, it promptly fills the nose with a multitude of aromas, from black cherry and lightly grilled plums to dark chocolate and cracked black pepper; from roasting herbs and spices (think bay leaf, rosemary, thyme and dried mint), to a polished glean of well-integrated oak. The palate is powerful, in a dignified way, with a sculpted shape, fine, chalky tannins and persistent flavor. Decades of age await, but if well decanted and well paired, it's drinking remarkably beautifully now.

2018 Penfolds Bin 149 Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from California

97JS 96V 95WA 95WE

Lots of blackberry, currant, light chocolate and hazelnut. This is rather dense and plush, but shows impressive layers of tannins that have a rough-velvet texture. Juicy and intense fruit. The grapes come from the AVAs of Rutherford, Calistoga, Oakville and then spread across Napa. 14.9% comes from South Australia. A global wine. In the end, it’s nicely toned and curated. Needs three or four years to come together. Try after 2025.

97 points, James Suckling (Feb 2021)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 149 is a blend of fruit from Rutherford, Calistoga and Oakville plus 15% South Australia Cabernet. Inky, deep and unctuous, the 2018 is a total knock-out. Although quite opulent and rich in feel, the 2018 also has tons of backing structure to balance things out. All the elements come together effortlessly. It was aged in 100% new oak, 80% French and 20% American.

96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2021)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 149 slips gracefully out of the glass with notions of wild blueberries, blackcurrant cordial and mulberries with an undercurrent of Indian spices, sandalwood, cigar box and dusty soil plus a touch of garrigue. Full-bodied, rich and decadently played in the mouth, it has firm, rounded tannins and bold freshness supporting the voluptuous layers, finishing long and spicy. The adaption of some of the Grange "formula" (for want of a better term) of winemaking seems to lend more of an Australian style to this wine, although there is no mistaking the Napa Cabernet fruit profile in all but the texture of the tannins, which are more typical of Australia. It's a true chimera! 1,393 cases were made.

95 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Feb 2021)

This wine is a blend of grapes from Napa Valley (85.1%) and South Australia (14.9%). A tannic structure gives way to a welcome juiciness of tangy cranberry and currant flavors. French and American oak aging impart a moderate level of toast and vanilla tones, with accents of cedar, dried herbs and black pepper chiming in. The bright acidity lasts through a long, supple finish.

2021 Penfolds Bin 704 Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California

95JS 95WI 94V 93WS 93D

I like the aromas of blackcurrants, pencil shavings, pine cones and blackberries. Medium-bodied with well-integrated tannins that give framing and vibe. This will be better in three or four years. Solid cab. Drink from 2028.

95 points, James Suckling (Jun 2024)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2021 Bin 704 Cabernet Sauvignon gallops out with energetic notes of black currant jelly, red currants and wild blueberries, leading to hints of menthol, dark chocolate, forest floor, and pencil shavings. The medium to full-bodied palate has a firm line of grainy tannins and a racy line supporting the muscular black fruit flavors, finishing on a mineral note. It was aged for 16 months in French oak barriques, 48% new.

95 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Oct 2024)

This 2021 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 704 is composed and understated at this early stage. Cocoa bean and cedar support gravelly, dark earthy tones. A strong fist of flavor shows intent, its composure impressive again, and unwinding over a lengthy, fine finish assisted by ample tannins. Very young but well formed and built to last.

94 points, Angus Hughson, Vinous (Aug 2024)

Appealing for its density and concentration, with black olive, sage and laurel bay leaf notes up front, leading to a core of dense blackberry and plum flavors. Accents of rose petal, fresh earth and crushed pine needle, plus malty Assam black tea hints, linger on the finish, where the tannins apply an appealing, firming grip. Drink now. 1,450 cases imported.

93 points, MaryAnn Worobiec, Wine Spectator (Oct 2024)

Trying to bring a Penfolds personality to a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon parcels from the Napa Valley has mixed results, with the raw power of the fruit bringing a density typical of the region that overwhelms any subtle varietal nuances. Big black cherry and blackberry bass notes are softened by some meaty savoury notes, but the intensity keeps driving hard through a very big flavour corridor. Built for a long life in the cellar.

2016 Penfolds Shiraz Bin 111A (750ml)
Shiraz from South Australia, Australia

100WA 100JS

A new addition to the Penfolds lineup, the 2016 Bin 111A Shiraz is a blend of Clare (51%) and Barossa (49%) fruit from vineyards that have previously contributed to Grange. Aged in 100% new French oak, it's a rich, luxuriously textured wine that's packed with ripe fruit and finely textured tannins. Hints of grilled meat and exotic dried spices accent red raspberries and redcurrants in this full-bodied but exceptionally silky and elegant red that meets the high expectations for such a pricey bottling.

100 points, Joe Czerwinski, Wine Advocate (Aug 2019)

This new Special Bin shiraz is stunning and has such wildly deep and dark fruit, in particular very rich dark cherries and plums and plenty of attractively spicy oak on offer here. Intense and packed with youthful fruit. There’s an entrancing build of really fine tannin, carrying pure, pristine and deep-set flavors of blackberries and ripe dark cherries. The finish is carried on incredibly long, muscular and velvety tannins. Such power and elegance, really setting a new style. This is exceptional. A glorious new rung at the top of the Australian wine ladder. 51% Clare, 49% Barossa, two single plots blended and matured in French oak for 18 months. Seductively drinkable now, but this will live for decades. Best from 2028.

2018 Penfolds Quantum Bin 98 Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from California

98JS 97WA 97V

What sticks with you about this global blend of Napa and Southern Australian wine is the intense and transparent purple and blue fruit. Lots of blackberry and blueberry aromas with some stones and flowers, such as violets. It’s a very layered and intense wine with very refined, creamy and chewy tannins. Full and very impressive. Very Penfolds. Mouth-filling texture. It’s made mostly from Napa grapes and predominantly from Oakville and Diamond Mountain. About one-fifth is from South Australia. Aged in 80% new American oak and 20% new French. Try after 2026.

98 points, James Suckling (Feb 2021)

Deep garnet-purple colored, it needs a good amount of swirling to unlock slowly emerging scents of chocolate-covered cherries, plum preserves, blueberry compote and cassis with fragrant suggestions of vanilla pod, violets, coconut, crushed rocks, pencil lead and clove oil. Medium to full-bodied, the generously fruited palate explodes in the mouth with ripe, juicy black and blue fruits, supported by firm, grainy tannins and a lovely burst of freshness, finishing long and spicy. It is mostly all fruit and American oak at this youthful stage, but I imagine that like Grange, its real appeal comes with bottle age. I would give it at least five years to allow the oak to marry and tertiary nuances to emerge, then drink it over the next 20 years or more. To manage expectations—this doesn't taste like Napa or South Australia. It doesn't even taste like the 2018 vintage here in Napa. It really is its own thing, which I suppose is the point. 1,749 cases were made.

97+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Feb 2021)

The flagship wine in this range, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Quantum Bin 98 is 87% Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% South Australia Shiraz. Blackberry jam, bittersweet chocolate, espresso, licorice, cloves and gravel infuse the 2018 with tons of character and complexity. Dense and opulent to the core, the Bin 98 possesses tremendous intensity. I would give if a few years in bottle to fully come together.

The 2021 Bin 600 Cabernet Shiraz is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Shiraz, coming from Napa Valley and Paso Robles. Deep garnet-purple in color, it offers up a classic nose of cassis and plums, plus suggestions of cedar chest, graphite, black pepper, and underbrush. The full-bodied palate bursts with bold black fruit and great tension, textured with plush tannins, finishing long and lifted. It was aged for 16 months in American oak barriques, 53% new.

Larger in stature and attitude than an Australian version of a Cabernet+Shiraz blend, this Californian 'claret', as seen through the Penfolds prism, becomes a more curious beast with each passing vintage. Vines imported from the Barossa’s historic Kalimna vineyard have now reached maturity in the Napa, at Creston 600 Ranch (now called the Camattat Hills Vineyard), and produce rich fruit of distinction. The 85% Cabernet Sauvignon component is typically robust and assertive, with pronounced blackberry and bramble, but the 15% Shiraz addition now plays a stronger role in the flavour profile, adding plush red berry pleasure and red liquorice high notes.

2018 Penfolds Bin 149 Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)

This is an epic wine that doesn’t quit, opening up with ripe, fleshy flavors of black cherry, maraschino cherry and framboise. But the fruit notes are only the beginning, giving way to date-nut bread, salted bittersweet chocolate, marzipan, dried olive, green peppercorn, French-press coffee and cardamom. The tannins are filling in the mouth, but never get in the way of all the complexity, while the finish just goes on and on. Drink now through 2047. 500 cases imported.

98 points, MaryAnn Worobiec, Wine Spectator (Dec 2023)

First time on the Place for this knockout iconic wine. Expect layers upon layers of fragrant plum, raspberry, black cherry, sandalwood, red liqourice, raspberry leaf, cola, sandalwood, pomegranate, climbing slowly but surely through the palate. Intense and poised, so good, hard to resist, will cellar for decades if you can wait that long. Peter Gago winemaker, Tom King director. 100% new American oak for ageing.

98 points, Jane Anson (Feb 2024)

Arguably Australia's most famous wine, the 2019 vintage of Grange, a multi-regional blend from top vineyards around South Australia, is a dense yet aromatic bottling that unpeels over time in a glass or decanter. Raspberry and blackberry compote, cedar, licorice and winter warming spice are on deck, with seaweed-like umami nuances and a good lick of mocha-like oak. The palate is plush and plump like a favorite armchair, but framed in powerful, beautifully integrated tannins, with enough stuffing to last the ages. It should cellar beautifully until 2050, at least.

97 points, Christina Pickard, Wine Enthusiast (Apr 2024)

A strong heady nose, really full on and impactful, almost verging on too much. Rich and ripe, layered and dense, a full mouthful straight away with such bright acidity this is soaring out of the glass. Amazingly well built, far too young of course, but there's structure, intensity, spice, liquorice, blackcurrants and brightness on show. Gorgeously sculpted, muscular yet suave, dark but lifted, clean but textured. Ends fresh. A great wine.

97 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Feb 2024)

97/3% shiraz/cabernet sauvignon; matured in new American oak for 19 months. A quieter release for the 2019 rendition of Penfolds' world-famous icon. A little less of the formic and VA heft of youth in this showing and a bit more approachable as a result. Deep crimson in the glass with familiar characters of deep black berry fruits, plum compote and black cherry underscored with hints of baking spices, Calvados, espresso grounds, black olive tapenade, roasting meats, creamy oak, purple flowers and earth. Weighty and concentrated with classic Grange density of fruit and tannin; persistent, texturally flexing and long of finish. As per usual will cellar like a dream, but I think it will hit its drinking window a bit earlier than usual.

97 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion (Jul 2023)

The bold, expansive 2019 Grange (97% Shiraz, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon) spent 19 months in larger new American Oak and is powerful and expressive as it delivers a dense core of coca, blackberry and baked terracotta aromas, all well backed by toasted coconut oak. Mouth-filing, expansive and seriously tannic, it then delivers waves of dark berry flavor laced with touches of spice, leading to a rich, muscular finish. It’s built for the long haul, so don’t even think of opening for at least a decade.

96 points, Angus Hughson, Vinous (Jul 2023)

Dark, dank and immaculate. The oak handling and tannic precision boast ample class. Beneath lurks a latent, molten beauty that will unravel eventually. I like this Grange. I feel that the decadent style, molten and fleshy, is well suited to the drought vintage and its thick grape skin tannic scour. Mercifully, the tannins are pliant and despite it all, plenty juicy. Firework aromas of raspberry liqueur, camphor and gunpowder, with a smear of black olive, licorella and hung meat wafting across the long finish. Best from 2030.

2021 Penfolds Grange (750ml)
Syrah from South Australia, Australia

99D 99AWC 98WA 98WS 98JS 98JA 97V

Confession: Grange has never been my favourite of the Penfolds portfolio (I am a St Henri girl) but I’ve been converted. And if ever a vintage were to turn me, 2021 was always going to be the one, heralded by many in South Australia as a ‘vintage of a lifetime’. Sourced from sites across the Barossa Valley (66%), McLaren Vale (26%) and Clare Valley (8%), it is a blend of 94% Shiraz and 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, which spends 18 months in 100% new American oak hogsheads, and has already integrated seamlessly into the opulent fruit. My initial impressions, hurriedly typed, start with a string of descriptors that detail just how seductive it is already: “Wow! Exotic, inky, generous, silky, ripe, velvety. Immense. Incredible. The whole package!” (My colleague Georgie Hindle wrote: “Classy and so sophisticated. Like looking at a gorgeous man in a tuxedo.”) The trademark Grange volatile acidity presents itself as macerated balsamic strawberries, tapenade and tarmac, joining mouthfilling silky tannins and sumptuous aromas and flavours of boysenberry, root beer, mocha, salted liquorice and crème caramel. If you can ignore its siren call from the cellar, it easily has three to five decades of life ahead....

99 points, Tina Gellie, Decanter (Jun 2025)

We've been waiting patiently for the Grange release from the stellar '21 vintage and it certainly lives up to the hype. An impenetrable magenta/crimson in the glass, with the telltale aromatic clout and the light V.A. lift of an embryonic Grange clearly evident as you place your nose in the glass. There's an incredible depth of fruit here. Deep blackberry, blackcurrant and plum compote with hints of graphite, coal dust, violets, wood spice, olive tapenade, oak, blackforest cake, pan juices, panforte, Dutch licorice and earth. The tannins – strong yet powdery – provide ample structure to the wine as it finishes long and deep, resonating perfectly. There is no doubt that this will be considered one of the great Grange releases.

99 points, Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion (Jul 2025)

2021 was a magnificent season in South Australia, one blessed with good yields (a change from the previous several years of low yields and drought conditions), healthy rainfall leading into the season and dry, mild conditions during ripening. Vignerons could not have hoped for better conditions. So here, the 2021 Grange is powerful, ripe, structural yet balanced, long and complex. There is a softness to the middle palate, which speaks to the mildness of the conditions, potentially positioning this as one of the best modern-era Granges. The fruit (94% Shiraz, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon) was sourced from Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley. For critics of this style, my only wish to assist with clarification could be teleportation, together, into a future 30 or 40 years from now. We would drink this wine, where it would still appear fresh and yet would have settled into its finesse and grace as well. It matured for 18 months in American oak, 100% new. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

98 points, Erin Larkin, Wine Advocate (Jul 2025)

Powerful yet silky and elegant, this wine offers so much to admire. Intense notes of both black and buttery green olive, tobacco leaf, cardamom syrup, blackberry, huckleberry, cassis and morello cherries in syrup lie at the core. Additional details of chocolate-covered espresso bean, cast iron and dried violet linger on the long, expressive finish alongside palo santo and sandalwood hints and a whiff of peppermint. Drink now through 2045. 113 cases imported.

98 points, MaryAnn Worobiec, Wine Spectator (Dec 2025)

Wow. What a release of this famed Australian wine, made from 94% shiraz and 6% cabernet sauvignon. Aromas of blackcurrants, cured meat, cedar, iodine, blackberry compote and lilacs. The palate is full-bodied with seamlessly integrated tannins and a powerful yet silken mouthfeel that persists in a long-lasting finish. You can taste the prestige and history, tied in with the expression of the warm 2021 vintage. As always, a wine for aging but drinking well now. Drink or hold.

98 points, James Suckling (Jul 2025)

Grips you from the first instance. As ever with Grange, the concentration and power of is delivered with such a deft and joyful hand, walking from beginning to end of the palate accompanied by distilled black fruits, flowers and herb-strewn aromatics. Delicious, such purity of expression, and truly it is one of the world's great wines. Tom King director, Peter Gago chief winemaker. 100% new American oak for ageing.

The 2021 Shiraz Cabernet Grange is fabulous and already in the groove. It has the raw power and structure to sail for decades. Waves of licorice, chocolate, cocoa, blackberry and belt leather are surprisingly approachable and expressive. The palate is a different beast entirely, with piles of powdery tannins holding this package tight and unevolved. A nice touch of acidity freshens up the long, strong finish.
