I like the aromas of blackcurrants, pencil shavings, pine cones and blackberries. Medium-bodied with well-integrated tannins that give framing and vibe. This will be better in three or four years. Solid cab. Drink from 2028.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2021 Bin 704 Cabernet Sauvignon gallops out with energetic notes of black currant jelly, red currants and wild blueberries, leading to hints of menthol, dark chocolate, forest floor, and pencil shavings. The medium to full-bodied palate has a firm line of grainy tannins and a racy line supporting the muscular black fruit flavors, finishing on a mineral note. It was aged for 16 months in French oak barriques, 48% new.

This 2021 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 704 is composed and understated at this early stage. Cocoa bean and cedar support gravelly, dark earthy tones. A strong fist of flavor shows intent, its composure impressive again, and unwinding over a lengthy, fine finish assisted by ample tannins. Very young but well formed and built to last.

Appealing for its density and concentration, with black olive, sage and laurel bay leaf notes up front, leading to a core of dense blackberry and plum flavors. Accents of rose petal, fresh earth and crushed pine needle, plus malty Assam black tea hints, linger on the finish, where the tannins apply an appealing, firming grip. Drink now. 1,450 cases imported.

Trying to bring a Penfolds personality to a mix of Cabernet Sauvignon parcels from the Napa Valley has mixed results, with the raw power of the fruit bringing a density typical of the region that overwhelms any subtle varietal nuances. Big black cherry and blackberry bass notes are softened by some meaty savoury notes, but the intensity keeps driving hard through a very big flavour corridor. Built for a long life in the cellar.
