I very much like the convenience of B‑21's service. One complaint is that it takes longer than I am used to with other online retailers to get a confirmation, which resulted in my placing a "double order" on my recent purchase. From now on I will know to be patient.

Good Til Gone

Good til Gone? Yes. Well, it's pretty simple. The wine is good. Really good. But is has to go. And when it's gone, it's gone. Sometimes we just buy too darn much. With thousands of wines coming and going, there's lots going on around here. Wines are overlooked and sit idle, and need a nudge.

Browse through this list and check back as we’re sure to add to it. Nothing compromised. These aren't auction goods or close-outs where provenance is a question. It's all good. Prices progressively reduced monthly, so some serious bargains here. Best take a look sooner than later. Prices are good til gone.

Rene Geoffroy NV Brut Cuvee Expression 1er Cru (750ml)
Sparkling from Champagne, France

92JS 91JD

Aromas of crushed chalk, peaches and minerals with hints of crushed stone follow through to a full body with layers of fruit, fine phenolics and fresh acidity. Polished and creamy texture. 35% pinot meunier, 30% chardonnay and 35% pinot noir. Dosage 3g/L. Disgorged in April 2022. Drink now.

92 points, James Suckling (Aug 2022)

The NV Champagne Expression Brut is fresh and delicately fragrant with brioche, white flowers, and red fruit. The palate is inviting and dry, with a nice backbone of refreshing acidity. This is a wonderful first showing for the range that can stand alone or at the table and will hold up over the next 6-10 years. A killer value.

Ohishi Tokubetsu Reserve Whisky (750ml)
From Japan

92WHA

This is a nuanced delicacy, so tread lightly. It offers a nose of rich apple, oloroso sherry, cranberry, pepper, fennel, star anise, and a touch of milk chocolate. The sherry casks are at play: dark ruby fruits, peppery spice, and cinnamon. The mouthfeel holds steady, with Cola Cubes, stewed blackberry, and apple peels as the spices fall out, ending with cocoa-dusted dried fruits.

1
NV Vouette & Sorbee Fidele (1.5L)
Pinot Noir from Champagne, France

94WA 93V

The NV Brut Nature Fidèle (R14) is a Blanc de Noirs from Pinot Noir on Kimmeridgian soils and is entirely based on the 2014 vintage. Disgorged in October 2017 the oak-fermented wine shows a golden-reddish apricot color and opens with a very delicate, floral and herbal yet intense and vinous bouquet of red fruits, with warm, dry earth and spices and just a hint of oak. Bone dry (of course), fresh and elegant on the palate, this is an impressively delicate and filigreed Champagne to be enjoyed as a still wine rather than a fizz. The finish is long, clear, dry and well-structured (even with fine tannins) and reveals discreet salinity. In fact, Fidèle drinks like a Burgundy-inspired Coteaux Champenois with very fine but not effervescent bubbles, persistent lemon juice and a touch of oaky flavors. Don't use a flute to enjoy this young, gastronomic wine; instead, use a wine glass or one of the rounder, more voluminous Champagne glasses like the Lehmann Jamesse (which stresses the finesse rather than the vinous character). Don't serve the Fidèle too fresh, either, but if you must, wait a bit and don't worry if the wine is suddenly 12 or even 14 degrees Celsius—it's still delicious and even more vinous then! (To be honest, when tasted at 15 or 16 degrees Celsius, I even got some Gewürztraminer notes (lychees) on the nose...!) Tasted in July 2018.

94 points, Stephan Reinhardt, Wine Advocate (Issue # 238 - Aug 2018)

The amber-colored NV Brut Nature Fidèle is gorgeous. Lifted, precise and nuanced throughout, the Fidèle possesses a captivating aromatic. Medium in body and tense in style, the Fidèle is super-expressive today. It could use another year in bottle to soften a bit, but it is nevertheless striking. Disgorged 07/03/16.

NV Henriot Blanc de Blancs Brut (750ml)
Chardonnay from Champagne, France

92WE 91WS

The Henriot style goes for mature Champagnes, both with reserve wines and with a base of an older vintage. This wine, based on the 2008 vintage, is no exception. It has a toasty character, mineral and zesty texture, and layers of attractive acidity. It's crisp, yeasty and ready to drink.

92 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Aug 2018)

A bright, finely tuned Blanc de Blancs, with a subtle tang of salinity and flavors of lemon meringue pie, glazed apricot, pink grapefruit granita and blanched almond. Creamy and mouthwatering, with a lingering smoke-tinged finish. Drink now through 2019. 1,000 cases imported.

Granola bar notes of toasted oats, honey, chocolate chips, and sweet nuts on the nose, along with blueberries, vanilla, orange blossom, and a touch of spice. Creamy vanilla latte, dark chocolate, dried cherries, peppermint, and root beer spices on the palate, which benefits from a drop of water. The finish has more spice, a sheen of mint oil, savory oak, and coffee bean.

Made with Washington State Sauvignon Blanc and part of a line of accessible vermouths made with cocktails in mind, this is light gold and slightly cloudy in appearance. Who says dry riesling is always tart? The effusive grapefruit and peachy nose, with hints of sesame and hibiscus, remains cool and subtle. Hard to resist this as it pulls you into the juicy and bright palate which feels a bit lighter than it actually is. Long, rather zesty finish with delicate minerality that makes you want more. Syrah from Hermitage, Rhône, France

A complex bouquet evokes ripe blackberry, cherry compote, licorice and violet, energized by a spicy cracked pepper nuance. Broad and fleshy in the mouth, offering densely packed, smoke-tinged black/blue fruit, exotic spice and floral pastille flavors that pick up a minerally nuance as the wine opens up. Shows superb delineation and spicy lift on a long, silky finish framed by steadily building tannins. There were five demi-muids of this wine in 2019, all of them new.

2019 Vinedo Chadwick (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Maipo Valley, Chile

99JS #75 Top 100 97WA

Subtle and very beautiful with currants, tarragon, basil and rose petals in the aromas. It’s full-bodied, yet agile and so fine-textured with superb tannins that provide multi-layers on the palate. It’s refined, yet powerful at the end. Suggests greatness and longevity. Lots of blackcurrants, stones and violets in the after taste. Cabernet sauvignon with a touch of petit verdot. This needs three or four years to show its true greatness.

99 points, James Suckling (Aug 2021)

#75 - James Suckling Top 100 of 2021

The 2019 Viñedo Chadwick is a classical Cabernet Sauvignon from Puente Alto, one of the best zones within Maipo. It's from a moderately warm vintage that delivered a wine with only 13% alcohol and good freshness. It contains some 3% Petit Verdot. The vines were planted in 1992, and its gapes fermented in equal parts in stainless steel and concrete or troncoconic vats. Three-fourths of the wine matured in new barriques and the rest in Stockinger foudres for 22 months, including time for the malolactic fermentation. I was truly impressed by this vintage, especially because of its elegance and freshness. There are showy aromas reminiscent of tangerine and flowers, ripe red berries (rather than black) and a spicy twist from the oak but nothing herbal or balsamic that one could expect given the moderate ripeness. The grapes were picked very early, and the wine follows the path of the 2016, the coolest vintage so far, with juicy fruit, elegance and great tension. This feels exceptional and transcends the style of the year. 10,000 bottles produced. It was bottled the 25th of January 2021.

2019 Vina Sena Sena (1.5L)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Aconcagua Valley, Chile
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Eduardo Chadwick is one of the most important people of the vine in Chile – the world for that matter – facing multiple obstacles throughout his impressive career. For nearly a decade Eduardo worked to rebuild the iconic Viña Errázuriz, restoring his family's 19th century estate to its former glory. As Eduardo was gaining ground, California's most famous man of the vine paid the country a visit in 1990. Robert Mondavi fell in love with Chile and would soon be introduced to his counterpart in the region. By 1995, the two had reached a pioneering agreement – Seña was born. For four long, grueling years the two passionate visionaries toiled over vineyard sites in search of the perfect terroir for their dream wine. This was to be Chile's icon above all others. Site was paramount.

Located in the Valle de Aconcagua, on a 42 hectare colluvial vineyard of well drained gravel, rock and loam, the Seña vineyard is planted to the perfect mix of Cabernet Sauvignon, Carménère, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Syrah. The slightly cooler temperatures of this elevated, sloping site allow for long, slow ripening. The Seña vineyard is often harvested two weeks after its nearest neighbor. Precious few wines in the country will compete; perhaps none – after all, perfection is incredibly rare.

This is a wine above all others ever bottled in Chile. A wine which is rightly described by Neal Martin as "The peripatetic wine that goes around the world challenging and, let it be said, often defeating First Growths in blind tastings."

98WA 98JS 96JA

The 2019 Seña was produced with a Bordeaux blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Malbec, 15% Carmenere and 4% Petit Verdot with the Chilean character of the high percentage of Carmenere. Most of the volume fermented in stainless steel with some 10% in concrete vats, and the final blend matured for 22 months in French oak barrels, 80% of them new, and 10% in Stockinger vats. It's 13.5% alcohol and has good acidity and freshness, coming through as medium-bodied, elegant and balanced. This is incredibly elegant, subtle and harmonious even at this early stage. It has floral aromas, notes of orange peel, a touch of creamy sweet spices and great freshness. The palate is medium-bodied, seamless and pure, with pungent flavors and a soft texture. It's long, clean, defined and super tasty. I feel this wine is getting better and better by the vintage. The grapes were picked quite early, and that helped to contain the ripeness and seems to have been a great decision. There was also an exception in the Panquehue zone where the Seña vines are, where the summer was cooler than the average, so quite different to many other regions in Chile. 100,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2021.

98 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Issue # 256 - Aug 2021)

Such beautiful aromas of crushed berries, currants, walnuts, allspice and nutmeg follow through to a full body with tight, ultra fine tannins that provide length and intensity. A finish of slightly dried cherries with wet earth, slate and stone. Chewy and fine-grained. A wine with soul and length. Give it time.

98 points, James Suckling (Sep 2021)

The 25th anniversary vintage, and an excellent showcase of the supple, nuanced fruits of this wine. Plenty of black cherry and bilberry puree, pure but layered. It has the rich depths that always delivers, where things are almost too much and yet not quite enough, still leaving you wanting more. Fragrant raspberry leaf becomes clearer as it opens in the glass, as does the saline minerality and a smoky finish, with the tannins becoming more delicate by the minute, highlighting freshness and juice. Located in the Aconguacgua foothills, following biodynamic farming. Tasted twice.

2019 Sine Qua Non Grenache Distenta I (750ml)
Grenache from Central Coast, California

98WA

The 2019 Grenache Distenta I is composed of 76% Grenache, 8% Mourvèdre, 9.3% Syrah, 4.3% Petite Sirah and 2.4% Viognier. The vineyard sources are 11% Cumulus Estate, 39% The Third Twin Estate, 32% Eleven Confessions Estate, 3% Molly Aida and 15% Bien Nacido vineyard. Around 43% whole cluster was performed, predominately on the Grenache. The small proportion of Viognier was co-fermented with red grapes, but interestingly, because it ripens earlier than the reds, the white berries were frozen and added to the reds at the time of fermentation. As an added bonus, these frozen grapes help to cool and, therefore, slow the fermentation. The wine was aged for around 23 months in 26.5% new French oak, 66.7% used oak and 6.8% concrete. It was bottled June 21, 2021. Medium to deep garnet-purple it bursts with profound perfume of black raspberries, boysenberries and cherry preserves, leading to an undercurrent of charcuterie, charcoal, bouquet garni and aniseed. Notions of red roses and garrigue reward patient swirling and coaxing. The full-on full-bodied palate is wonderfully opulent, its intensity offset by fantastic freshness, finishing long with a savory dried herb-laced lift. 1,536 cases plus 600 magnums were made. Due to be released in spring 2022.

2019 Realm Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California

99WA 98JD 97V

Composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard has a deep garnet-purple color, requiring a little coaxing before it spills out of the glass with fantastically showy blackberry preserves, boysenberries and cassis notes, plus hints of black raspberries, clove oil and potpourri, with a touch of tobacco leaf. The decadent, full-bodied palate sports a firm backbone of ripe, grainy tannins with beautiful freshness. All that generous black fruit melds seamlessly into a very long, mineral-laced finish.

99 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Sep 2021)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon To Kalon Vineyard offers up a sweeter, sexier nose than the Dr. Crane release and is loaded with red and black currant fruits as well as flowery incense, unsmoked tobacco, chocolate, and exotic spices. Ultra-pure, ripe, as opulent as they come, and just heavenly juice any way you look at it, it can be enjoyed any time over the coming 20-25 years, probably longer.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2021)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard captures so much of what makes the Realm wines so appealing. It is maybe just a bit pushed in terms of its ripeness profile, but not as heavy or unctuous as in some past years. Blueberry jam, creme de cassis, lavender, licorice, spice and gravel build as the 2019 opens in the glass. This heady, full-throttle Cabernet is sure to delight Realm fans.

2019 Realm Cellars Cabernet Farella Vineyard (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California

98WA 97V

Realm took over the management of Farella vineyard in 2018. Since then, winemaker Benoit Touquette explained their focus has been to open out the canopy, creating better exposure for the fruit, aiming to achieve riper tannins. A blend of 92% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Merlot, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Farella Vineyard has a deep garnet-purple color and a powerful, expressive nose of baked plums, juicy blackberries and blackcurrant pastilles, plus touches of black olives, lavender and cinnamon stick, with a waft of fragrant earth. The full-bodied palate is seriously dense and muscular, featuring a rock-solid foundation of super ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness, finishing with epic length and energy. A spectacular showing for Farella!

98+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Sep 2021)

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Farella Vineyard is tremendous. Winemaker Benoit Touquette has captured all of the savory and mineral nuances that are such a signature of this Coombsville site balanced with ripe, radiant expression of fruit. Red plum, rose petal, cinnamon and blood orange are all laced together in a Cabernet of real distinction. This is the first vintage that incorporates a touch (8%) of Merlot, which helps soften some of the youthful angularity Farella Cabernets often show.

2019 Pichler-Krutzler Riesling In Der Wand (750ml)
Riesling from Wachau, Austria

94WE 93JS

A hint of creaminess creeps deliciously into the orange zest notes on the nose. The palate comes on light feet but is vibrant with zesty notes of ripe orange and Amalfi lemon. The body is slender but concentrated, almost fizzing with ripe and utterly fresh zestiness. The finish is clean, taut and dry with lasting, mouthwatering citrus. Drink by 2040.

Lots of flint and gun metal with lemon and lime and some stone character. It’s medium-to full-bodied with lots of character and a dry, fruity finish. Already shows some bottle bouquet. Drink now. Screw cap.

2019 Perfect Season Cabernet Sauvignon Knights Valley (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma, California

88V

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon is the best of the three vintages I have tasted so far. This plush, flamboyant Knights Valley Cabernet is packed with inky dark fruit, mocha, chocolate, spice and leather. This is an especially ripe, dialed up style.

2019 Paul Jaboulet-Aine Hermitage La Chapelle (750ml)
Syrah from Hermitage, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Driving through the Northern Rhône Valley past the steeply sloping hillsides south of Tain L’Hermitage, first time visitors might notice a small centuries old chapel perched unassumingly among rows of vines. But lovers of Northern Rhone Syrah recognize this landmark as the hallowed ground of one of the greatest wines in the world, La Chapelle. Planting vineyards here almost two centuries ago, Antoine Jaboulet was at the forefront of establishing Hermitage (the region in fact named for the hermit who used to live in the chapel) as one of the most important wine producing regions of the world and later giving his name to the company – Paul Jaboulet Ainé (Ainé meaning the elder in French). It is always with great excitement that we offer a selection of the outstanding, highly rated wines of Jaboulet at incredible pre-arrival pricing, from the exceptional 2019 vintage.

Passed down from generation to generation and expanding through the years, Jaboulet now owns 120 hectares, producing fine wines from twenty six other appellations. Ten years after the untimely death of Gerard Jaboulet and a subsequent decline in quality, the Frey family, also owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux and part-owner of Champagne house Billecart-Salmon, purchased Jaboulet in 2006. Oenologist Caroline Frey implemented new winemaking practices (including a new barrel program from Bordeaux) and viticultural improvements (including a shift to organic and biodynamic vineyard practices), spearheading the estate’s recent renaissance and culminating in the stellar 2019 vintage. The extraordinary 2019 Jaboulet La Chapelle Hermitage is made from 100% Syrah from their top vineyard sites including Les Bessards, Le Meal and Les Rocoules. Formerly known as “Le Petite Chapelle,” the 2019 Jaboulet Hermitage Maison Bleue is sourced from the Rocoules section of the Hermitage hill, making it more approachable at a younger age. Sourced from the pebble-strewn lieu-dit Les Chassis, a vineyard owned by Jaboulet since its founding in 1834, the 2019 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert exhibits Hermitage-like truffle nuances and velvety tannins. And for fans of Hermitage Blanc, the Marsanne-dominated 2019 Hermitage Le Chevalier De Sterimberg Blanc is elegant and cellar-worthy.

Upon taking over at Jaboulet, Carolyn Frey stated her aim for the estate was a simple one - “Nothing less than perfection.” The 2019 Jaboulet wines hit the mark, establishing a new standard for excellence upon a centuries-old tradition of excellence, offering exceptional quality now for an exceptional price.

Last year, I giddily speculated whether the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle would warrant a 100-point score. While close—and I wouldn't completely discount it reaching that pinnacle in another decade or two—I'm not sure this wine is as good as I thought. It boasts exciting aromas of roasted meat, mocha, crushed stone, plum and cassis on the nose. It's full-bodied, concentrated, richly tannic and velvety in texture. It's long and complex on the finish, adding hints of cracked pepper and salted licorice. And yet, as much as I enjoyed tasting it and as undeniably great it is, angels didn't sing from the heavens. Maybe next bottle.
