Good Til Gone

Good til Gone? Yes. Well, it's pretty simple. The wine is good. Really good. But is has to go. And when it's gone, it's gone. Sometimes we just buy too darn much. With thousands of wines coming and going, there's lots going on around here. Wines are overlooked and sit idle, and need a nudge.

Browse through this list and check back as we’re sure to add to it. Nothing compromised. These aren't auction goods or close-outs where provenance is a question. It's all good. Prices progressively reduced monthly, so some serious bargains here. Best take a look sooner than later. Prices are good til gone.

2019 Paul Jaboulet-Aine Hermitage La Chapelle (750ml)
Syrah from Hermitage, Rhône, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Driving through the Northern Rhône Valley past the steeply sloping hillsides south of Tain L’Hermitage, first time visitors might notice a small centuries old chapel perched unassumingly among rows of vines. But lovers of Northern Rhone Syrah recognize this landmark as the hallowed ground of one of the greatest wines in the world, La Chapelle. Planting vineyards here almost two centuries ago, Antoine Jaboulet was at the forefront of establishing Hermitage (the region in fact named for the hermit who used to live in the chapel) as one of the most important wine producing regions of the world and later giving his name to the company – Paul Jaboulet Ainé (Ainé meaning the elder in French). It is always with great excitement that we offer a selection of the outstanding, highly rated wines of Jaboulet at incredible pre-arrival pricing, from the exceptional 2019 vintage.

Passed down from generation to generation and expanding through the years, Jaboulet now owns 120 hectares, producing fine wines from twenty six other appellations. Ten years after the untimely death of Gerard Jaboulet and a subsequent decline in quality, the Frey family, also owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux and part-owner of Champagne house Billecart-Salmon, purchased Jaboulet in 2006. Oenologist Caroline Frey implemented new winemaking practices (including a new barrel program from Bordeaux) and viticultural improvements (including a shift to organic and biodynamic vineyard practices), spearheading the estate’s recent renaissance and culminating in the stellar 2019 vintage. The extraordinary 2019 Jaboulet La Chapelle Hermitage is made from 100% Syrah from their top vineyard sites including Les Bessards, Le Meal and Les Rocoules. Formerly known as “Le Petite Chapelle,” the 2019 Jaboulet Hermitage Maison Bleue is sourced from the Rocoules section of the Hermitage hill, making it more approachable at a younger age. Sourced from the pebble-strewn lieu-dit Les Chassis, a vineyard owned by Jaboulet since its founding in 1834, the 2019 Crozes Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert exhibits Hermitage-like truffle nuances and velvety tannins. And for fans of Hermitage Blanc, the Marsanne-dominated 2019 Hermitage Le Chevalier De Sterimberg Blanc is elegant and cellar-worthy.

Upon taking over at Jaboulet, Carolyn Frey stated her aim for the estate was a simple one - “Nothing less than perfection.” The 2019 Jaboulet wines hit the mark, establishing a new standard for excellence upon a centuries-old tradition of excellence, offering exceptional quality now for an exceptional price.

98WA

Last year, I giddily speculated whether the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle would warrant a 100-point score. While close—and I wouldn't completely discount it reaching that pinnacle in another decade or two—I'm not sure this wine is as good as I thought. It boasts exciting aromas of roasted meat, mocha, crushed stone, plum and cassis on the nose. It's full-bodied, concentrated, richly tannic and velvety in texture. It's long and complex on the finish, adding hints of cracked pepper and salted licorice. And yet, as much as I enjoyed tasting it and as undeniably great it is, angels didn't sing from the heavens. Maybe next bottle.

2019 Domaine Nicole Lamarche Grand Cru (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Clos Vougeot, Burgundy, France

93V

The 2019 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru does not deliver quite as much intensity and cohesion as the Echézeaux, offering leafy red berry fruit on the nose, which is quite muted at the moment and needs more presence. The palate has a little more chutzpah, displaying better grip than anticipated and a tightly wound, lightly spiced finish. It doesn’t quite make a statement like some other wines from the clos this vintage.

The 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Les Gallimardes reveals a dense purple/plum color as well as a ripe, decadent bouquet of ripe black cherries, fruit cake, ground pepper, and garrigue. This carries to a full-bodied 2019 revealing wonderful fruit, ripe yet building tannins, and a great finish. It shows the more savory, Provençal style of the vintage nicely and has beautiful fruit as well as a great finish. It's going to need 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for two decades.

2019 Domaine de Montille En Champans 1er Cru (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Volnay, Burgundy, France

Boasting fresh, lively fruit and balanced acidity, these spectacular 2019 Domaine de Montille Burgundies come from a vintage that "hit the bullseye" according to critic James Suckling, offering a "rare combination of excellence and great consistency." Benefiting from our long-standing relationship with the Domaine, this part two of our exclusive Domaine de Montille offering features Burgundies from the estate's vineyards heading south from Volnay through the Cote d'Or to Saint Aubin, ranging from a value-packed entry level Red Burgundy to a vast array of exquisite Premier and Grand Cru Whites, all exceptional wines offering outstanding value, many offered in large format perfect for cellaring.

Now considered a pioneer in the region for being among the first to estate bottle his wines and craft ageworthy Burgundy with a sense of place, Hubert de Montille took over his family's estate at the age of 17 in 1947 after it had dwindled to only 2.5 hectares and set about rebuilding the domaine's holdings while establishing a stellar reputation. Taking the reins after his father's 50-year tenure, Hubert's son Etienne was among the first in the region to convert to organic and then biodynamic practices, while continuing to expand the estate with the acquisition of some of Burgundy's most highly regarded vineyards, including those of Chateau de Puligny-Montrachet in 2012. Now with 35 hectares of holdings spanning an astounding 20 separate top appellations throughout the region, Domaine de Montille's top Chardonnay parcels south of Volnay include Puligny Folatières, a premier cru with two prestigious neighbors, Leflaive and Leroy, the rock-covered Meursault Poruzots next to the famous "Les Genevrières" vineyard and Saint Aubin En Remilly, located just behind the revered Grand Cru Le Montrachet. Crediting the influence of his brother-in-law, the masterful Meursault winemaker Jean Marc Roulot, Etienne employs a restrained use of new oak for the whites depending on the specific plots, aging for up to a year on the lees and preserving the acidic backbone while crafting complex, balanced wines that will evolve over decades.

From the exceptional 2019 Bourgogne Blanc "Clos du Chateau," boasting the rich profile of Puligny Montrachet at a fraction of the price, to the magnificent 2019 Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru, an ultimate expression of refined, long-lived Chardonnay from a tiny .23 hectare parcel, and including one Red Burgundy, the bright and energetic 2019 Bourgogne Rouge, these selections from Domaine de Montille rank among the top in the region, superbly expressing each terroir with alluring freshness and elegant length. Produced in a vintage with significantly lower yields guaranteeing excess demand, now is the time to secure your allocation of these magnificent 2019 Burgundies today and look forward to enjoying them for years to come.

93WA

The 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Champans offers up aromas of red berries, plums, warm spices and wilted rose petals. Medium to full-bodied, lively and unusually charming for a young wine from this site, its pretty core of fruit is framed by supple, melting tannins and bright animating acids.

97V

The 2019 Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru is matured in around 45% new oak with a little more lees during aging. It was very reduced on the nose despite rigorous coaxing in my glass, though it does finally open after 10 minutes. The palate is intense on the entry, displaying more salinity than all of de Montille’s Premier Cru Pulignys, plus oyster shells and a touch of seaweed. This Chevalier is very persistent and quite tangy on the finish. Plenty of energy here. It will give 20–30 years of drinking pleasure.

2019 Albert Mann Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg (750ml)
Riesling from Alsace, France

96JS 94WA

So many wild-herb aromas that it transports you to a rugged and rocky hillside, where the riesling vine accomplishes the miracle of transforming heat and sun into freshness. Very long and focused, salty finish with cosmic energy. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.

96 points, James Suckling (Jun 2022)

The 2019 Riesling Grand Cru Schlossberg exhibits a clear and intense yellow color and an impressively ripe, intense and elegant, complex but also refined bouquet with lemony and fine, flinty terroir aromas. Based on old vines and aged in stainless steel for nine months without undergoing malolactic fermentation, this is a very elegant, saline and vertically structured Riesling with great intensity and a saline finish. The fruit is round and refined, very elegant and carried by a substantial mineral spine as well as remarkably fine crystalline and saline acidity. This is an impressive, intense and textured, finely tannic Schlossberg bottled with 13% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2022.

2018 Vietti Rocche di Castiglione (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy

97WA 96V 95WS 95JS

This is one of my sweetheart wines from Castiglione Falletto. The Vietti 2018 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is beautifully etched and sharp with an especially delineated quality that is uncommon in this vintage. Fruit comes from a small 8,000-square-meter parcel, and like the other wines in this cru series from Vietti, it ages in oak casks for two years. The wine's texture is beautifully smooth and polished thanks to the carefully integrated tannins. Only 3,693 bottles were made.

97+ points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)

The 2018 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is suave, silky and caressing right out of the gate. Sumptuous and racy, with silky tannins, the Rocche possesses superb depth and plenty of resonance that builds over time. The 2018 is an especially potent Rocche that is going to need a number of years to unwind.

96 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

A Barolo that starts out with breadth, turning more focused and linear by the finish. Delivers cherry, plum, mineral, sandalwood and tar aromas and flavors that permeate the supple texture, with all the components in the right proportions. Firm, refined tannins lend support and this lingers nicely. Best from 2025 through 2045. From Italy.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Nov 2022)

Lots of sweet, wild-strawberries hit your nose first, but wait for the beautiful, spiced orange-peel note that will bowl you over. Then mineral and savory-spice notes chime in. Full-bodied with intense wild-fruit and agrumi flavor, which is already latching onto the slightly chewy tannins. This is just a baby, but it’s packed with bright, spicy-fruit promise. Patience is needed. Try from 2025.

2018 Vietti Ravera (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy

95V 95WA 93WS 93JS

The 2018 Barolo Ravera is a wine of real depth and vertical structure. As always, the Ravera is a taut, nervy Barolo built on energy more than volume. Readers will have to be patient, as the Ravera is likely to require a number of years to be at its most expressive. Even in the early going, it is vibrant and full of life. Rose petal, chalk, blood orange and white pepper lend striking exotic top notes that are quite suggestive of what the future is going to bring. What a gorgeous Barolo this is.

95+ points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Vietti is one of a handful of estates to bring the Ravera MGA of Novello to the current popularity it enjoys now. Their 2018 Barolo Ravera has a smoky personality with crushed stone and pencil shavings. There is plenty of dark fruit at the back, ripe cherry and blackberry mostly, and the wine is tonic and firm in terms of its structure and tannins. The Ravera is a wine of enormous length and a finely tuned texture. Exactly 7,560 bottles were made.

95 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)

This red leads off with a distinctive minty note allied with cherry, iron, tobacco and underbrush flavors. Turns firm and linear on the finish, with a sinewy feel, yet remains fresh and long. Very pure. Best from 2026 through 2043.

93 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Oct 2022)

Lighter structure this year, but it’s intense, with focused red-cherry and raspberry character and spicy and mineral nuances. Medium-bodied with firm tannins and a very tight finish. This is super-compact and needs time to expand. Try from 2024.

2018 Vietti Lazzarito (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy

96WA 94V 94WS

The 2018 Barolo Lazzarito represents Vietti's interpretation of Serralunga d'Alba, the village often associated with the most powerful wines in the appellation. The Lazzarito completes its secondary fermentation in barrique over three months and is then racked into large oak botti for an additional two years of aging. With some 8,000 bottles produced in this smaller vintage, the wine is very indicative of its geographic origins with tight black fruit, rusty nail, blood orange and earth. Compared to the others in this series, this wine delivers more lasting tannic power. A bit salty and savory now, it is well suited to long aging.

96+ points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)

The 2018 Barolo Lazzarito is tense, vibrant and very much closed in on itself. Searing tannins and Serralunga structure dominate today. Crushed rocks, gravel, red fruit, rose petal, lavender and sage all run though this sculpted, vibrant Serralunga Barolo. What stands out most about the Lazzarito today is that is stylistically more similar to the other Barolos than it was a few years ago. I expect great things in time here.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Round and full of plum, cherry, pomegranate, green tea and eucalyptus flavors, this red is also dense and muscular. Gripping tannins reign on the finish. Overall, this is balanced and very long. Best from 2026 through 2043.

2018 Vietti Cerequio (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy

97V 96WA

The 2018 Barolo Cerequio is a new wine in this range. Soaring aromatics and bright, red-toned fruit give the Cerequio its effusive personality. Nuanced and deep, with tremendous complexity and tons of character, the Cerequio is dazzling. This is everything a great Barolo from Cerequio should be. In other words: textbook. More over, it's one of the best wines of this very uneven vintage.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Here's an exciting new submission from Vietti. The 2018 Barolo Cerequio is lovely, sporting a broad and enriched bouquet that paints a panoramic vision of this MGA that straddles the villages of La Morra and Barolo. Despite that wide vision, this wine also excels at showing pinpoint details of wild cherry, crushed stone and black licorice. Cerequio is a wine of latitude and depth. Tight tannins help to stitch it together into a comprehensive whole. Only 4,925 bottles were made in this inaugural release. Congratulations.

2018 Vietti Brunate (750ml)
Nebbiolo from Barolo, Piedmont, Italy

95WA 95WS 94V 94JS

With fruit from La Morra, the mid-weight 2018 Barolo Brunate shows a pretty softness and a delicate side with dried rose, lilac and blue flower. The wine completes malolactic fermentation in barrique and is later moved into large oak casks for aging. This dual oak treatment is part of Vietti's secret recipe for producing the silky tannins and fine texture you taste here. A production of 4,493 bottles, the wine is recognized by that distinctive aromatic finale of licorice and balsam herb.

95 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Jun 2022)

A refined, silky red marked by a mix of rose, strawberry, cherry, eucalyptus and white pepper aromas and flavors. Shows ample structure and fine intensity as this builds to a long, dusty, mineral-tinged finish. Harmonious, firm and fresh. Best from 2026 through 2042. From Italy.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Sep 2022)

The 2018 Barolo Brunate is a deep, layered wine that is going to need at least a few years to come together. Today, the Brunate is quite primary and backward, but all the ingredients are there. Sage, menthol, licorice, dried flowers and spice build with a bit of coaxing.

94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2022)

Sweet raspberries and strawberries on the nose, as well as some chalky minerals. Full-bodied with a tight bead of fruit and mineral flavors that have a hand on the firm tannins and produce good focus and drive at the end. Needs time to integrate. Try from 2025.

2018 Realm Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California

98WA 98JD 97V 97JS

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, coming from five different blocks, and was harvested "in multiple picks, at a leisurely pace." Deep garnet-purple colored, it rolls sensuously out of the glass with decadent scents of boysenberries, black cherries, redcurrant jelly and blackcurrant pastilles with hints of bouquet garni, black soil and iron ore. Full-bodied, the taut, tightly knit black and red fruit has a firm structure of ripe, grainy tannins and bags of freshness, finishing very long with loads of earth and mineral nuances coming through.

98+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon is beautiful, offering a more backward, reserved expression of this vineyard than usual, although no less impressive. Beautiful crème de cassis, graphite, white chocolate, and floral notes emerge from the glass, and it’s deep, full-bodied, and concentrated, with ample tannins and mid-palate depth. Tight, backward, and closed, yet with incredible purity, hide bottles for 4-5 years and it should keep for 20-30 years. It’s incredibly well done, and I’d be thrilled to have bottles in the cellar.

98+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Jan 2021)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To-Kalon Vineyard is a huge, massive wine. Powerful tannins wrap around a core of blackberry jam, bittersweet chocolate, spice, licorice and dark spice. This is the most potent, structured wine in this range from Realm. Readers have to be patient. This full-throttle, opulent Cabernet Sauvignon has plenty to offer, but it needs time in bottle to truly shine.

97+ points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2021)

A full-bodied yet elegant red with aromas of black and red cherries, stewed blackcurrants, cassis leaf, cloves, licorice and potpourri. Dried flowers and pine needles on the palate, too. Lightly peppery with ripe, velvety tannins. Pretty fruit intensity and length. Pure cabernet franc. Only available in magnum. Drinkable now, but better from 2022.

2018 Realm Cellars Cabernet Farella Vineyard (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California

98JS 97WA 97JD 97V

An intense nose of ripe blackberry, blueberry, vanilla, clove and sandalwood. It’s full-bodied and so juicy with a wealth of ripe black fruit and layers of sweet spices. Ripe, velvety tannins and a long finish. Already impressive, but deserves a few years to develop. Drink from 2022.

98 points, James Suckling (Jan 2021)

Realm took over the management of the Farella vineyard from 2018 with a view to eventually assume possession of the property. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Farella Vineyard is their first "Estate" wine from the vineyard. Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes bounding out of the glass with youthful notes of fresh black plums, Morello cherries, ripe blackcurrants and Black Forest cake plus hints of cumin seed, damp earth and spice box with subtle hints of tobacco and new leather. Medium to full-bodied, it has a solid foundation of fir, grainy tannins and lovely freshness supporting the bright, crunchy fruit, finishing long with a provocative, lifted perfume. Note that no 2017 Farella Vineyard was made.

97 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Oct 2020)

Also all Cabernet Sauvignon, and the first vintage where this team has also done the farming, the 2018 Farella Estate spent 16 months in 75% new French oak. More vibrant red and blue fruits, graphite, flowers, and spice notes define this beauty, which is full-bodied and has an elegant, seamless texture, great tannins, and a beautiful, classy style.

97 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Jan 2021)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Farella Vineyard is stellar. Rich, aromatic and wonderfully expressive, the 2018 Farella captures a striking balance of Realm richness and the cool, savory notes that make Farella such a compelling site. Rose petal, mint, spice, licorice and blood orange give the 2018 striking aromatic nuance and complexity. This is a gorgeous Coombsville Cabernet.

2018 Paul Hobbs Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To-Kalon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California

98JS 97V 96WS

Aromas of blackberries, currants, violets and black licorice follow through to a full body with chewy, polished tannins that have a tile and dust character and texture. It’s very long and persistent with beauty and intensity. It shows reserve and finesse. This needs at least five years to come around. Try after 2025.

98 points, James Suckling (Jan 2021)

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer To Kalon Vineyard is fabulous. Inky, deep and explosive, the 2018 possesses tremendous intensity in all of its dimensions. Huge swaths of tannin wrap around a core of blue/purplish fruit. All the elements are kicked up: fruit, acid and tannin. Readers need to be patient, as the 2018 will require at least a handful of years in bottle to be at its best. The heady, explosive finish points to a very bright future.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2021)

Vivid, detailed flavors of cassis, kirsch and fig paste pump along, laced with alder, cocoa and tobacco notes. The fruit melds nicely with a serious tug of warm loam through the finish, giving this a smoldering edge at the very end. Shows nice character. Best from 2022 through 2038. 688 cases made.

2018 Maranones Pena Caballera (750ml)
Grenache from Vinos de Madrid, Madrid, Spain

96WA

I decided to include the note here of the 2018 Peña Caballera that I tasted in November 2020 for completeness and context, as I tasted the 2019 and 2020. It came from a slow-ripening, cooler and wetter year that delivered very juicy wines with structure, tension, complexity and depth. This comes from a 1.5-hectare plot in the "paraje" that gives the wine its name, planted with 50- to 70-year-old vines on a north-facing slope at 850 meters in altitude on sandy granite soils that are organically farmed. The whole clusters fermented in a 3,300-liter oak vat with indigenous yeasts. After pressing, the wine matured in a 1,500-liter oak foudre, followed by five months in concrete before it was bottled. This is incredibly floral and stony at the same time. It's aromatic but has a certain austerity and seriousness. The austerity is more noticeable on the palate, with very fine and chalky tannins, a little more backward than the 2016 at the time. I believe this has huge aging potential. It has structure but feels ethereal. 1,993 bottles and 18 magnums produced. It was bottled in June 2020.

Domaine Georges Vernay, founded by Francis Vernay in 1937, is a third-generation, venerable wine producer, located in the heart of Condrieu, France. The efforts of Francis Vernay were instrumental in the creation of the official Condrieu appellation in 1940. In later years, Francis was succeeded by his son Georges, who played a key role in restricting the geographical boundaries of Condrieu, preserving the character of the appellation and ensuring its future greatness. In 1996, Christine Vernay, Georges' daughter, took over as winemaker and General Manager of the Estate. Recognized as one of the great winemakers in France, several of her wines have recently been awarded the coveted 100 points in the world’s top wine publications; remarkable - since the 2011 vintage, not a score below 96 from Jeb Dunnuck for the Coteau de Vernon. Among the top two or three Condrieu in any vintage, the Coteau de Vernon comes from very old vines planted in 1936 and 1960, on the steep granite slopes just behind the Vernay estate.

97JD 95WS

From vines just next to the Coteau Vernon, the Condrieu Les Chaillées de L'Enfer is year-in, year-out one of the top examples from this appellation. The 2018 Condrieu Les Chaillées De L'Enfer reveals a light gold color as well as a gorgeous bouquet of ripe stone fruits, honeyed nectarines, and apricots intermixed with notions of white flowers, white chocolate, and truffly earth. Possessing an incredible sense of salty minerality, medium to full-bodied richness, flawless balance, and a great finish, it strikes a beautiful balance between richness and freshness and stays light on its feet and elegant. I'd drink bottles over the coming 4-6 years, but it will evolve for longer.

97 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2020)

Bright and nicely detailed, with a mix of green almond, white peach, honeysuckle and mango notes, backed by a subtle bitter orange thread on the finish. The rich and showy side of this white is balanced by its inner purity. Drink now through 2024. 650 cases made, 35 cases imported.

2018 Futo OV|SL Red (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Stags Leap, California

98JS 97JD

Very cool with conifer, mushroom, chili, currant and pine-needle aromas. Full bodied with saturated tannins that just fill the mouth. Gorgeous length and depth. It builds nicely on the palate. The quality of the tannins is beautiful. 66% cabernet sauvignon, 17% cabernet franc, 14% merlot and 3% petit verdot. Unfined and unfiltered. Fabulous to try now, but will be even greater in 2025.

98 points, James Suckling (Aug 2021)

Always a co-ferment of two sites, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon OV|SL reveals a dense purple hue as well as gorgeous crème de cassis, graphite, wildflowers, crushed stone-like minerality, and new leather-like aromatics. These carry to a full-bodied, concentrated, powerful 2018 that has the vintage's more reserved, focused mouthfeel, building tannins, and a great finish. This beautiful, impeccably balanced 2018 needs 3-5 years of bottle age and will keep for 30+.

2018 Futo Oakville Estate Red (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Oakville, California

99JD 99JS 97V

I also loved the 2018 Estate. Incredibly pure crème de cassis, blackberry, scorched earth, graphite, gravelly earth, and cedar pencil notes give way to a full-bodied Cabernet with perfect balance, ripe yet certainly present tannins, a great mid-palate, and a blockbuster of a finish. This is pure Napa Valley class that needs 4-5 years of bottle age and will keep for 30-40 years given its purity, balance, and concentration.

99 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Jan 2021)

This is luxurious red for the vintage with velvety tannins that give it superb depth and richness. Lots of tile, dry earth, clay and chocolate. Full-bodied, but almost weightless in the sensibility of the wine. It goes on for minutes. Lovely dried oranges and savory, fruity and forest-floor character at the end. 80% cabernet sauvignon, 14% cabernet franc, 4% petit verdot and 2% merlot. Unfined and unfiltered. Drink in 2025.

99 points, James Suckling (Feb 2022)

The 2018 Futo is silky, elegant and captivatingly beautiful right out of the gate. Freshly cut flowers, spice, mint, mocha and sweet red cherry build in a translucent, finessed wine that is more elegance than pure power. Even so, there is plenty of depth to support two decades or so of exceptional drinking.

2018 Dalla Valle Maya (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, California

100WA 100JD 98V 98JS

The very deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Maya is shy and restrained to begin. With swirling, it begins to reveal beguiling notes of fragrant earth, lavender, garrigue and Sichuan pepper, giving way to a core of wild blueberries, boysenberries, black raspberries and black currants plus a hint of iron ore. The palate is full-bodied, revealing itself in slow-releasing layers of black and blue fruits with exhilarating earth and mineral sparks, framed by firm, beautifully ripe tannins and bold freshness, finishing on a persistent ferrous note. As cerebral as it is downright hedonic, this Maya is simply jaw-dropping.

100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Jan 2021)

A smaller production cuvée from a single parcel of the estate vineyard, the 2018 Maya Proprietary Red Wine is the normal 60/40 split of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon brought up in a mix of new and used barrels. Incredibly perfumed with complex notes of blue fruits, flowers, loamy earth, graphite, and tobacco, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, polished, silky tannins, no hard edges, and a finish that won’t quit. While this is a rich, concentrated wine, it’s the complexity, elegance, and finesse that define this cuvée, which is going to benefit from just short-term cellaring and cruise for 2-3 decades.

100 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Jan 2021)

The 2018 Maya is stratospheric. Inky, deep and wonderfully layered, Maya is off the charts. Inky red/purplish fruit, cedar, licorice, spice, tobacco and mocha are some of the many notes that grace the 2018. The wine is young, but exceptional and vivid. Maya is usually much more forbidding at this stage, this is an incredibly refined vintage. The purity and delineation of the flavors is unreal. Moreover, the 2018 is a wine of extreme pleasure.

98 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2021)

A polished, full-bodied red with aromas and flavors of blueberry, black cherry, sandalwood and crushed praline. Superb flavor intensity and a creamy texture, supported by firm, velvety tannins. Lingering vanilla notes. Delicious already, but better from 2022.

2018 Cornell Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon (750ml)
Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma County, California

98V

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is elegant and nuanced from the very first taste. Over the last year, the 2018 has developed from a powerhouse into a much more refined wine. There is plenty of mountain tannin and structure, but those elements are completely enrobed by the fruit. Hints of iron, cedar, dried herbs, mint and sweet red cherry fruit emerge with a bit of time in the glass. The 2018 is a very rare, quintessentially elegant mountain Cabernet. Best of all, the 2018 won't take years to come together. I would drink it ahead of the 2016 or 2017, but if opened young it needs several hours of aeration.

2018 Chateau L'Evangile (750ml)
Merlot from Pomerol, Bordeaux, France

97JD 97WA 96V

Made in the more lively, elegant style that seems to be favored these days, the 2018 Château L'Evangile is based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, with the Cabernet Franc playing a much more lead role than normal. Beautiful blue fruits, green tobacco, violets, white truffle, camphor, and damp earth notes all flow to a gorgeously layered, full-bodied Pomerol with sweet, silky tannins, flawless balance, and a great finish. While I prefer the more opulent renditions of this cuvée, this is nevertheless a brilliant wine that has wonderful concentration, beautiful purity of fruit, and the class to evolve for 25-30 years in cold cellars.

97+ points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

The 2018 L'Evangile is composed of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes barreling out of the glass with explosive scents of boysenberries, stewed plums and baked blackberries with hints of lilacs, candied violets, Indian spices and garrigue, plus a touch of black truffles. Full-bodied, rich and powerful in the mouth, this blockbuster coats the palate with layers of black fruit preserves and exotic spices, framed by plush tannins and wonderful energy, finishing long and savory. Decadently approachable now, give it 4-5 years in bottle for maximum impact and drink it over the next 20+ years.

97 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate (Mar 2021)

The 2018 L'Évangile is flamboyant, spectacularly beautiful. Mildew in June took out fully 50% of the potential crop, resulting in a dense, opulent wine that is going to need many years to shed some of that baby fat. The 20% Cabernet Franc is the highest on record. The 2018 is an epic, modern-day Évangile. Raspberry jam, mocha, licorice, spice and chocolate come together as the 2018 blossoms with time in the glass. Made with 80% new oak. Both hedonistic and intellectual, the 2018 is a total pleasure bomb. Don't miss it. A real wow wine - huge!

2018 Belargus Quarts-de-Chaume Grand Cru Roueres (750ml)
Chenin Blanc from Anjou, Loire, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

A not to be missed selection of top-rated Chenin Blancs from the Loire Valley’s newest rockstar producer, this stellar lineup of exquisite wines from Domaine Belargus is “a must investment for all fans of Chenin Blanc” and equally appealing to those who enjoy “the very great white wines of this world” according to the Wine Advocate’s Stephen Reinhardt, produced in limited quantities and available while they last.

Established in 2018 by Ivan Massonnat, Domaine Belargus is founded on the groundwork of Anjou legend Jo Pithon, among the first to shift focus to vineyard specific Chenin Blanc in the late 1980’s and responsible for the revitalization of the dramatic Coteau des Treilles, a steep, terraced vineyard referred to as the Cote Rotie of the Layon Valley. Originally known for sweet wines but also producing dry Chenins since the late 20th century, the Anjou Noir region boasts a mosaic of complex mineral and volcanic soils perfect for growing Chenin Blanc, with each of the Belargus cru’s expressing its unique origins, including premium parcels in the famed Quarts-de Chaume AOP, the only Grand Cru site in the entire Loire Valley. Leading off with the dry selections, the entry level 94 pt. 2018 Belargus Anjou Ronceray Blanc offers classic Chenin Blanc spiced fruit “all backed by finely beaded acidity” according to the Wine Spectator’s Aleks Zecevic while the powerful 97 pt. 2018 Belargus Anjou Treilles Blanc is a silky, seamlessly textured Chenin Blanc with a mineral tinged finish sourced from the famed 2.72-hectare Coteau des Treilles monopole, a beauty that “any serious wine lover should at least taste” according to critic Reinhardt. Sourced from vineyards along the Layon River, its humid air aiding in the late season development of botrytis, the 96 pt. 2018 Belargus Coteaux du Layon Moelleux Layon is a harmonious blend of polished fruit and honeyed texture, offering “great tension between acidity and sweetness” according to critic Zecevic with a “sensationally long” finish and delivering incredible value. Sourced from one of the three plots listed in the original declaration of the Grand Cru Quarts-de-Chaume appellation, the 96 pt. 2018 Belargus Quarts-de-Chaume Grand Cru Roueres is “rich yet finessed and elegant” according to critic Reinhardt, bottled in full size 750 ml. Described as “fabulous” and “irresistible,” the 99 pt. 2018 Belargus Quarts-de-Chaume Grand Cru Les Quarts pairs “richness and sweetness with crystalline finesse and elegance in an unrivaled way” according to Reinhardt, and the viscous and intensely concentrated 100 pt. 2018 Belargus Quarts-de-Chaume Grand Cru Ultra is “made for eternity,” and with only one barrel produced, a must for collectors of “the finest noble sweet wines,” poised to age for decades, both of these beauties offered in 375 ml. half bottles.

Offered in a range of styles and levels of complexity, these selections from Domaine Belargus highlight Chenin Blanc's chameleon-like ability to elegantly mirror its terroir when crafted by an exceptional producer. Sourced from an outstanding 2018 Loire Valley vintage, Chenin Blanc fans and anyone looking to explore the Loire’s best whites won’t want to miss this opportunity to enjoy these masterful Loire wines from Domaine Belargus, ideal for mixing a case at an astoundingly good price.

2018 Amiot-Servelle Charmes Chambertin (750ml)
Pinot Noir from Gevrey-Chambertin, Burgundy, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Based in the historic Burgundian village of Chambolle-Musigny, Domaine Amiot-Servelle is a small, highly sought-after artisan estate in the Cotes de Nuits, first established in 1920. Composed of eight hectares in total, the Domaine took on its current name for owners Christian Amiot (son of renowned Morey St. Denis producer Pierre Amiot), and his wife Elisabeth Servelle in 1990, farming seven out of the eight hectares in Chambolle-Musigny and the remaining hectare split between village appellation Morey-Saint-Denis and the two grand crus Charmes-Chambertin and Clos Saint-Denis. Sourced from an excellent vintage with ideal harvesting conditions, these outstanding 2018 red Burgundies are produced in Amiot-Servelle's elegant house style boasting great precision, balanced extraction and restrained use of oak, offering lovers of red Burgundy and fans of elegantly crafted Pinot Noir incredible value at each price point.

Assuming the role of winemaker in 2011, Christian's daughter Prune has continued to raise the bar at Amiot-Servelle, garnering higher ratings year over year and critical praise from Burghound's Allen Meadows and Neal Martin of Vinous. Employing organic viticulture since the early 2000s, the Domaine's vines are planted in limestone soils enhancing minerality, with the unique terroir of each premier cru contributing nuanced flavors. Balancing the density of the old vine fruit with tension and acidity, Prune has made subtle changes in the winemaking over the last decade such as varying the amount of whole bunches used in vinification and employing more gentle extraction, enhancing aromatics and adding tannic structure. While the use of new oak at Domaine Amiot-Servelle varies from 10-50% with the premier and grand crus receiving the most, all the wines are aged in barrel for 18 months, yielding ripe, elegant wines that will evolve over time.

Demonstrating immense purity of fruit with an energetic expression of terroir, the 2018 Domaine Amiot-Servelle Burgundies are skillfully crafted and specially selected for over delivering value. From the entry level 2018 Morey St Denis to the extravagant 2018 Amiot-Servelle Clos St Denis Grand Cru and a range of stand-out premier cru Chambolle-Musigny in between, Burgundy fans will appreciate these undervalued small production wines for their finesse and longevity, now attractively priced well below comparable quality domaines.

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru, which comes from Mazoyères, has a fragrant, peppermint-tinged bouquet that is more discreet than others I have tasted. You have to coax the aromas from their shell, touches of violet emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and finely tuned acidity. Quite dense and perhaps requiring a little more delineation and complexity to manifest on the conservative finish. It just needs to turn on the Charmes.

Shimmering purple. A strongly scented bouquet evokes ripe red and blue fruits, pungent wisteria, licorice and exotic spices, along with a smoky mineral quality and a hint of black pepper. Broad and fleshy but lively on the palate, offering concentrated Chambord, cherry, cassis and fruitcake flavors that are enlivened by building spice and floral accents. Smooth, steadily building tannins add shape to an extremely persistent finish that echoes the spice and floral notes. One-third whole clusters and one-third new oak.
