I very much like the convenience of B‑21's service. One complaint is that it takes longer than I am used to with other online retailers to get a confirmation, which resulted in my placing a "double order" on my recent purchase. From now on I will know to be patient.

2024 La Cana Albariño (750ml)
Albarino from Rias Baixas, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

If you've been a fan of Spanish wine over the past ten years or so, you've probably been waiting for Albariño to get the attention it deserves on the world stage, and while it still takes a back seat to Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and the like, the best examples are still shining brightly and only getting better with each passing vintage.

La Caña has long been a benchmark producer of this one-of-a-kind varietal, working with top-notch sites in the Salnès sub-zone of Rías Baixas, widely considered ground zero for the most quintessential expressions. Year after year, their entry-level bottling far outperforms its price point in the critical press, with all the customary bright citrus and tropical fruit, vibrant acidity, and textured charm that Albariño aficionados have come to know and love. While the 2024 has yet to be reviewed professionally, we recently got a chance to try it with importer Jorge Ordoñez, and we can confidently say this rendition picks up right where previous vintages have left off, with more glowing praise no doubt in store in the near future. Meanwhile, you have a great opportunity to stock up on a fan-favorite crowd pleaser that seems tailor-made for summer soirées and warm days by the pool, so don't hesitate to lock in at our market-best price.

Light gold in color. Notes of tangerine and pineapple sitting upon a mineral core which gives the wine a racy, complex style, with salinity and vibrancy.

92 points, Bob Sprentall, B-21 Proprietor (Apr 2025)

There’s a flinty edge to the poached apricot and white cherry fruit flavors on display in this leesy white. Hints of chamomile, spun honey, Meyer lemon peel and blanched almond add complexity, while a firm spine of crunchy acidity amps up the freshness and fine tension through the clean-cut, salty finish. Drink now through 2030.

2019 Marcelo Pelleriti 1853 Old Vine Estate Heritage Malbec (750ml)
Malbec from Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina
B-21 Top Recommendation

“An Argentine winemaker with rock star appeal...” - Michael Schachner, Wine Enthusiast

From one of “the most dynamic winemakers in Argentina” according to James Suckling, the thrilling 96-point 2019 Marcelo Pelleriti 1853 Old Vine Estate Heritage Malbec boasts 100-point winemaker pedigree from the Uco Valley’s oldest Malbec vines, revealing ripe, juicy dark fruit with bright acidity on a lasting, savory finish and layered with plush tannins promising longevity at a remarkable value price.

Gaining international recognition as the first Argentinian-born winemaker to garner a perfect Parker score for his 100-point 2010 Chateau La Violette Pomerol, Uco Valley native Marcelo Pelleriti established his eponymous winery on his family’s 110-year-old farm in La Consulta in 2007 and began a long-term collaboration with partner Miguel Priore in 2009, their shared vision to craft terroir-expressive Grand Cru wines encapsulating “the spirit of winemaking precision and creativity” in Uco Valley. Naming the estate for the year when the first Malbec vines arrived from France, Marcelo crafted the powerful 2019 Heritage Malbec from low-yielding, gnarled, pre-phylloxera Malbec vines aged over 100 years. The vineyard was vplanted in 1910 in rugged, silty loam and gravel soil at 1,050 meters above sea level, yielding tiny clusters of thick-skinned berries requiring the fruit of two vines to produce enough for a single bottle, imbuing his 1853 Malbec with rich concentration and staggering intensity. After fermenting the hand-harvested grapes with indigenous yeasts, Marcelo aged the impressive 2019 rendition for 24 months in French oak barrels with 12 months longer in bottle, yielding a “well-crafted and keenly priced” Malbec, revealing fresh, intensely concentrated fruit framed by ripe, polished tannins on a long and silky finish, the densely structured Malbec imbued with old vine complexity that guarantees longevity.

From a region producing “Argentina's best and most modern wines” according to Vinous critic Joaquin Hidalgo, the remarkably talented Marcelo Pelleriti is at the forefront of crafting terroir expressive Malbec in the Uco Valley, his blockbuster 96-point 2019 Marcelo Pelleriti 1853 Old Vine Estate Heritage Malbec offering aficionados and collectors of the best South American wines an exciting opportunity to jump on board Pelleriti’s ever-rising trajectory and enjoy one of Argentina’s most extraordinary Malbec values.

Blueberries, violets and shaved graphite with flint, black mushroom and gunmetal undertones. Hints of cedar and bark. Medium- to full-bodied with chewy tannins, yet they are spread out and frame the fruit beautifully. Selection of the best old vines with most over 100 years old. Drink or hold.

2021 Tignanello Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva (750ml)
Sangiovese from Chianti, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

When the iconic Super Tuscan collectible Tignanello racked up one massive score after another in the 2021 vintage, you could be sure that same unbelievable quality extended across the entire range from Antinori, and the 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchesi Antinori proves it in spades.

"This is one of the big surprises of this tasting and ultimately represents one of the best buys in the entire extended Marchesi Antinori portfolio." - Monica Larner, Wine Advocate

Larner sums it up nicely right there in describing this Sangiovese-based blend that earned 94+ points from her. Made from declassified estate fruit that doesn't make it into the grand vin, this is a true "baby Tignanello" in every sense. Antonio Galloni from Vinous calls it "particularly strong ... a terrific showing," and a pair of 95-point scores from James Suckling and Wine Spectator round out an impressive critical line for a sophisticated Tuscan overachiever.

If you're a Tignanello fan who's put away some of the monumental 2021 grand vin and want to get a glimpse of what it has in store without opening a precious bottle too early, this is your answer. Or, maybe you're a fan of classic Tuscan character who wants to experience some of the magic of Tignanello without the hefty price tag. Either way, the sub-$45 Marchesi Antinori Riserva offers just that opportunity.

95WS 94WA 93V

This ripe style is fresh and harmonious, delivering plum, cherry and boysenberry fruit, with accents of earth, iron and eucalyptus. Supple in texture, with a beautifully integrated structure and long, complex aftertaste. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2026 through 2043. 29,667 cases made, 5,833 cases imported.

95 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Oct 2024)

This is one of the big surprises of this tasting and ultimately represents one of the best buys in the entire extended Marchesi Antinori portfolio. The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Tenuta Tignanello Marchese Antinori shares the DNA of Tignanello. It is Sangiovese kissed with small parts of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Of course, the wine is more accessible and open compared to Tignanello, and spiritually, this wine is a Chianti Classico. By that I mean that the elegant minerality of these soils and the sunny flavors of its environs are the determining characteristics. You get wildflower, iris, tart fruit and plum. The wine's enhanced mineral character, with dusty white rock, is what adds lasting complexity and depth.

94+ points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Mar 2024)

The 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine, despite showing some tightness because of its recent bottling just a week prior to this tasting. Dark fruit, spice, leather and tobacco are layered in a Riserva that exudes tension, energy and sheer power.

Sonoma's standard-bearer Ferrari-Carano needs little introduction. These quintessential California classics have been all-time best sellers at B-21 for years, and it's always nice to see a standard bearer continue to hit the mark. These 2021s and 2022s showcase winemaking duo Rebecka Deike and Natalie West at their best, all notching solid press from James Suckling and offering outstanding value and consistent excellence. The "Ripe yet elegantly balanced and refreshing" 2023 Chardonnay is a top-shelf value performer at 91 points & under $16, a perfect option for your next go-to house white. A step (or two) up at 94 points, the 2022 Tre Terre is "full bodied with lovely texture and tension" per Suckling, outpacing it's sub-$25 price. For the reds, the 2021 Siena hits on all cylinders for fans of this QPR best seller, while the 2021 Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon catches 92 points from Suckling, who notes, "Medium-bodied with fine tannins and beautiful length. Bright and vivid. Plenty of cabernet character." If you're looking for surefire quality at an easy price, you almost have too many good options with these Sonoma classics.

Frank Family Vineyards has earned a loyal following for their consistently outstanding wines priced well below their fellow Napa competitors, and these Napa Valley selections are no exception, a spectrum of ready-to-enjoy wines from outstanding California vintages, ranging from their opulent Carneros Chardonnay to a top-scoring Napa Cab described as “superb” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous, all delivering exceptional value.

"The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville is straight-up fabulous..." - Jeb Dunnuck

No name in California wine history is as synonymous with Napa Cabernet as Robert Mondavi. Sourced from this revered estate's iconic To Kalon vineyard, an undisputed California "grand cru," the 2021 The Estates Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon makes the most of its pedigree and this acclaimed Napa vintage. A bevy of glowing praise, including 95 points from Decanter and 94 points each from Antonio Galloni and Jeb Dunnuck, confirms the wine's place as yet another benchmark expression of the valley's most famous AVA. "A wine of gravitas and power, the 2021 has a lot to offer," notes Galloni, who goes on to praise "a new level of energy and vibrancy in the Mondavi wines that is compelling." Rather than rest on their laurels, the team at Mondavi have redoubled their efforts to keep turning out stunning renditions such as this, and fans of expertly crafted Napa Valley Cabernet can add it to their cellars at a remarkable, sub-$60 price that's handily beats the rest of the market.

95D 94JD 94JS 93WS

What an easy-drinking 2021 Cabernet from this legendary Napa producer. It's a beautifully classic wine with intensely aromatic, flavour-packed fruit redolent of blueberry, black cherry, and black raspberry, tinged with smoky cedarwood. The full-bodied palate is marked by persistent tannins and a satisfying finish revealing notes of earth, river stones, dried herbs, and a firm spine of acidity—a wine to enjoy throughout a great meal. Nearly half the fruit is sourced from Oakville, with additional grapes from Stags Leap District, Oak Knoll, Yountville, and Rutherford. A blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Malbec, aged 18 months in French oak barrels.

95 points, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter (Sep 2024)

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Oakville is straight-up fabulous, with pure cassis and darker blue-tinged fruit as well as notes of graphite, tobacco leaf, and spicy wood. These carry to a medium to full-bodied, gorgeously layered, elegant Cabernet Sauvignon with fine tannins and just a kiss of background oak. There are roughly 11,000 cases, so it shouldn't be too hard to find in the market, and it's going to drink well for at least 10-15 years.

94 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Dec 2023)

Intense blackberries and black cherries on the nose lead to vivid focused cherries, blueberries and minty, spicy accents on the palate. Firm in tannins and fresh with good acidity, this outstanding wine is well-balanced. Enjoyable now but best from 2027.

94 points, James Suckling (Mar 2024)

An extroverted style, with a burst of mint and boysenberry notes leading off, followed by steeped plum and black currant preserve flavors. There's a nice graphite note running underneath the fruit before this ends with a licorice accent that rounds off the finish. Drink now through 2038. 900 cases made.

2016 Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva (750ml)
Tempranillo from Rioja, Spain
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Bodegas Muga's status as an all-time Rioja reference-point is reaffirmed with this sterling foursome of releases that we just secured at razor-sharp pricing. Leading off we have a Prado Enea for the ages.

"The expressive, complex and nuanced 2016 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is a textbook traditional Rioja in the making ... with all the components in the right proportion to age superbly in bottle." - Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate

Muga's flagship bottling is always a coveted item, and this WA97+ rendition is already showing legendary pedigree that will thrill collectors and connoisseurs of Spain's finest. A universally lauded expression of this classic Rioja Gran Reserva, the 2016 boasts towering press including no fewer than four 97-point scores, putting it in rarified air among the greatest vintages of this Spanish icon in the 21st century. "A brilliant wine with a solid two decades of prime drinking ahead of it" per Jeb Dunnuck, this is collectible Rioja class at its very best, and it's now available to our private clients at a must-see price that you won't find anywhere else.

The Selección Especial Reserva is always a crowd and collectible favorite in the range and always priced well for a broad audience yet offering the kind of cellar-worthy appeal that serious collectors are looking for. The double 95-point 2019 "has to be one of the finest vintages for this wine ... a powerful vintage with balance and freshness" according to Gutiérrez. Vinous' Joaquin Hidalgo likewise declares, "This red stands out for its crystal-clear expression, showcasing a range of Rioja's virtures." The 2020 rendtion ramps up the collectible appeal thanks to a particular feature of the vintage itself – no Prado Enea was made in 2020, so all the fruit and juice that would normally comprise that flagship icon has instead gone into the Selección Especial. So, it's no surprise that the 2020 picks up right where the 2019 leaves off, led by Jeb Dunnuck's 95-point review that highlights its "medium to full-bodied richness, a round, layered mouthfeel, and silky tannins," which makes it "already hard to resist."

Finally, the newly released 2021 Reserva Rioja is one of the sharpest values in Spanish wine, "a textbook example of [Muga's] style in a very good year, with power, concentration and clout, elegance and freshness" perGutiérrez' 94-point review in Wine Advocate. It's a perfect candidate to stack by the case, since it will not only cruise for several years in the cellar, but it will quench your thirst for Muga excellence anytime over the next decade while the you wait for the big boys to reach their prime drinking windows. For fans of Spanish wine and of Rioja in particular, this is a spectacular opportunity to load up on proven performers that will put many smiles on your face for countless years to come, at market-best pricing.

97WA 97WI 97JS 96V

The expressive, complex and nuanced 2016 Prado Enea Gran Reserva is a textbook traditional Rioja in the making. 2016 was a very elegant year, with aging potential, volume and very good acidity and freshness. It's full-bodied but fine-boned, has 14.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.6 and 5.25 grams per liter acidity. It has terrific balance, with all the components in the right proportion to age superbly in bottle. They have also been working on the selection of wood used. This wine matured in French and American oak barrels for three years, and the oak is super integrated. 127,808 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2020. It was an exceptional year with volume and quality.

97+ points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Feb 2024)

Deep ruby in color, this wine has a nose of cocoa powder, coffee bean, lavender and cherry. It is smooth at first sip, with tannins that slowly build in volume and then drift away to reveal black cherry, blackberry, chocolate, mint and orange-zest flavors. The brilliant finish is marked with a floral note. Drink through 2036.

97 points, Mike DeSimone, Wine Enthusiast (Jul 2024)

Complex aromas of dark fruit with violets, walnuts and chocolate. Classy. It's full-bodied with plush yet fine velvety tannins, and a precise and pointed finish. Juicy and savory. Tight finish. It's very long. This is beautiful now but will be even better in three or four years. Linear and vertical at the same time. Try after 2026.

97 points, James Suckling (Nov 2023)

Aged in barrel for 36 months, the 2016 Gran Reserva Prado Enea is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo and Graciano from Rioja Alta. This dark garnet wine reveals thyme, plum and sour cherry notes, accompanied by reductive nuances of matchstick and saffron. Additionally, it displays hints of biscuit, wax and dried flowers. On the palate, it is dry, supple and chalky, with a juicy, energetic flow that leads to a long-lasting, complex finish. While the leaner style brought on by the cold vintage may appear slightly unsubstantial for Prado Enea lovers, it remains absolutely delicious.

2010 Chateau Suduiraut Ex-Chateau 2022 (750ml)
Semillon from Sauternes, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

Featured in a range of formats and vintages cellared in perfect conditions, Sauternes fans and those looking to explore them won't need an excuse or special occasion to enjoy this thrilling, top scoring selection from Chateau Suduiraut, boasting fresh, opulent honeyed fruit perfectly balanced by savory acidity, offering a not to be missed opportunity for both collectors and newbies to stock up on at bargain pricing and enjoy over the next decades.

Set among exquisite gardens designed by the creator of the Sun King’s grounds at the Palace of Versailles, the majestic two-story turret-flanked Chateau Suduiraut is one of Bordeaux’s most beautiful estates, located just to the north of Chateau d’Yquem with 92 hectares of sloping organically farmed vineyards planted with mostly Semillon vines averaging 30 years of age. After harvesting the botrytized grapes over multiple passes with strict selection employed in the vineyard, longtime technical director Pierre Montegut vinified the Chateau Suduiraut Sauternes in French oak, blending mostly Semillon with small amounts of Sauvignon Blanc, then aged it on the lees in 50% new French oak barrels for 18-24 months, yielding its signature perfumed aromas with rich and decadent spiced fruit, balanced with energetic acidity and epic length. Describing it as “a mood altering wine,” the 95 pt. 2004 Suduiraut boasts “a range of honeyed flavors that never seems to stop” according to Wine and Spirits, while the Wine Advocate’s Robert Parker Jr. declares the 95 pt. 2006 Suduiraut “unctuously textured, with superb, full-bodied richness, good underlying acidity, and a stunning finish.” Boasting “a beautiful razor-sharp line of acidity that effortlessly slices through all that pure botrytised fruit,” Neal Martin of Vinous calls the 98 pt. 2009 Suduiraut a “benchmark Suduiraut” and declares the 96 pt. 2010 Chateau Suduiraut “simply magnificent” and “a candidate for best Sauternes of the vintage." Vinous critic Antonio Galloni declares the “fabulous” 97 pt. 2016 Suduiraut “such a gorgeous wine,” delivering a remarkable combination of flavor and intensity yet remaining “gracious and classy," while the Wine Enthusiast’s Roger Voss calls it “a great wine with a long-term future.”

Whether selecting a few favorites or mixing a case, these magical vintages of Chateau Suduiraut are crafted to reveal their layered complexity over the next decades, their rich palate deftly balanced by an energizing lift of acidity, guaranteeing a pleasurable evolution for years to come. Christian Seely, AXA's charismatic managing director behind Chateau Suduiraut, describes tasting these elegantly crafted Sauternes well: “It is above all a supremely pleasurable wine, and one that needs no excuse, context or pairing: You can just open it for the sheer pleasure of the thing.” Never more true at these exceptional bargain prices.

98WA 96V

One of the highest points of this vertical tasting, the 2010 Suduiraut reveals a dense, powerful bouquet of ripe apricots, exotic fruit, mango, pineapple, saffron and spices. More solar than the 2009 and with a full-bodied structure, it’s rich and concentrated, layered and seamless with a fleshy core of fruit and stunning controlled power, finishing long and mineral with bright acids. This stunning blend of 90% Sémillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc, harvested between September 22 and November 9 in five tries, was matured for 20 months in oak barrels (50% new, 50% one year) and contains 145 grams per liter of residual sugar.

98 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Jun 2024)

The 2010 Suduiraut, picked from 22 September until 9 November in five tries through the vineyard, has a drop-dead gorgeous bouquet that is delineated and detailed. There are copious scents of dried honey, apricot, white peach and just a hint of melted candle wax. The palate is very well balanced with great depth. It boasts layers of rich botrytised fruit, you can feel the weight here but not the heaviness thanks to that killer line of acidity. This 2010 has long been one of the finest Sauternes of the vintage and continues to amaze. Fabulous, even if not quite up there with the imperious 2009. 13.8% alcohol, 145gm/L residual sugar. Tasted at the Suduiraut vertical at the château.

2019 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino (750ml)
Sangiovese from Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

It seems the 2019 Brunello vintage is the gift that keeps on giving, as we're still unearthing stellar collectible opportunities on the region's most sought-after names.

"Il Poggione remains one of the absolute top producers of Brunello from year to year at a remarkably fair price point." - Eric Guido, Vinous

Il Poggione's classically structured, spice-driven style is on full display in the 2019, which captures the very best of this remarkable Brunello vintage. The expansive estate in the warmer southern sub-zone of Montalcino benefits greatly in balanced growing seasons, where the wine's hallmark power can stretch its legs without going overboard. Vinous' Eric Guido declares it "Enveloping and serene ... Il Poggione has captured the radiance of the vintage, yet this is just a baby today." Boasting true collectible potential at great pricing, Poggione's 2019 Brunello is another notch in an impressive recent track record for a bona fide Tuscan benchmark estate.

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino pulls the taster close to the glass with its dark and earthy blend of crushed ashen stones, giving way to rosemary, cedar, exotic spice and a core of raspberry preserves. Enveloping and serene, this flows across the palate like pure silk, steadily building in tension as tart wild berries and orange hints give way to a sweet herbal thrust. The 2019 finishes with tremendous length and is classically structured, as crunchy tannins resonate and violet inner florals slowly fade over a tactile coating of minerality. Il Poggione has captured the radiance of the vintage, yet this is just a baby today.

96 points, Eric Guido, Vinous (Dec 2023)

The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino has an intriguing nose of freshly shaved white truffle, rose petals, sweet earth, candied orange peel, and roasted hazelnut. The tannins are abundantly silken, with a subtle power on the palate that is framed with freshness. The palate feels complete and holds the 15% ABV with grace, while the finish unfolds with fresh herbs and earthiness lingering. They started planting higher elevation vineyards in the '70s and '80s. In cooler years use they utilize the lower elevation vineyards, but almost every recent vintage has been based on the higher elevation plantings due to climate change bringing warmer temperatures.

95 points, Vanessa Conlin, Wine Independent (Dec 2024)

The Il Poggione 2019 Brunello di Montalcino shows an evolved bouquet with aromas of dried fruit, forest floor, crushed flower and autumnal leaf. On a second nose, you get dark licorice, wet slate, cola and grilled rosemary. The tannins are powdery and dry. I recommend a medium-term drinking window as a result. You do feel the powerful 15% alcohol content in this ample 200,000-bottle release.

94 points, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate (Dec 2023)

Saturated dark red in color and coming from 25- to 60-year-old vines, the 2019 Brunello Di Montalcino is a brooding and serious wine on the nose and needs a little air on opening at this youthful stage, with aromas of cigar box, vanilla, smoky cedar, blackcurrants, tobacco leaf, and charred rosemary. Opulent and rich, this full-bodied Brunello reveals rich, velvet tannins, warming richness, and spice, and its oak-noted frame enhances the richness. It’s deserving of several years of proper cellaring to harmonize and is a lovely, warming wine to enjoy over the coming 15- 20 years. It was raised for 3 years in large French oak barrels.

94 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2024)

Features ample plum, cherry, iron, tobacco and underbrush flavors buoyed by a plump texture to match the dense structure, plus vibrant acidity to keep it all focused. Another year of aging should allow the finish to stretch out and this wine to reach its full potential. Best from 2026 through 2042. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 16,600 cases made, 4,000 cases imported.

94 points, Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (Jun 2024)

The 2019 is a vintage of balance, somewhere between 2016, 2013 and 2010. Sant'Angelo in Colle, which suffers in warmer vintages, performed very well and Il Poggione is a great example of the harmony of the area's wines in this vintage. Fruity at first sniff, it becomes more restrained later, with black cherry, violet, leather, graphite vibrancy and its typical nutty finish. The chalky tannins are extracted but velvety, underlined by an almost zesty acidity.

2023 Kelley Fox Willamette Valley Chardonnay (750ml)
Chardonnay from Willamette, Oregon
B-21 Top Recommendation

Declared “one of the most exciting portfolios of wines made in the United States” by Eric Guido of Vinous, these Kelley Fox selections from Willamette Valley include a top scoring range of elegant vineyard-expressive Pinot Noirs and a rich, energetic Chardonnay, her record of exceptional quality earning the portfolio a devoted cult following worldwide and available in limited quantities outside her exclusive winery list.

Establishing her winery in 2007 with her father Gus Stearns, Kelley Fox was mentored by David Lett of The Eyrie Vineyards before spending a decade as the winemaker at Scott Paul Wines, crafting her wines as a transparent expression of their vineyard origins with limited intervention in the winery and gaining access over her career to some of Oregon's top vineyards. Employing small lot fermentations with all native yeasts and aging in in used barrels, Eric Guido of Vinous describes Kelley’s 2022 Pinot Noirs as “lifted, finessed and ethereal yet still vibrantly fruit-focused and nearly spiritual in the way that seemingly only Pinot Noir can be,” while the white wines are “potent and rich yet driven by an energetic mineral core that adds remarkable depth.” Sourced from the Dundee Hills AVA, the entry level 92 pt. 2022 Kelly Fox Pinot Noir Mirabai offers “soft elegant fruit as well as a supple texture and fresh acidity” according to Audrey Frick of Jeb Dunnuck, while the beautifully aromatic 96 pt. 2022 Kelley Fox Liminal Maresh Vineyard Pinot Noir has “approachable, fine tannins, vibrant, mouthwatering, even acidity, and crystalline purity” and promises to evolve for over a decade. Vinous critic Eric Guido calls the rich and juicy 96 pt. 2022 Kelley Fox Durant Vineyard Pinot Noir “a model of purity, silken to the core” with “unbelievable freshness,” while the fresh and zesty 96 pt. 2022 Kelley Fox Maresh Vineyard Golden-Crowned Sparrow Blocks Pinot Noir is “darkly alluring” with “silky textures and simulating acidity,” both built for a decade or more of enjoyment. Sourced from the Freedom Hill Vineyard and aged in stainless steel for six months, Audrey Frick of Jeb Dunnuck calls the 93 pt. 2023 Kelley Fox Willamette Valley Chardonnay “hard to resist,” offering fresh, spiced fruit with “outstanding energy propelling it through the lovely, savory, mineral-noted finish” and declaring it “a tremendous value.”

Focusing on the clearest expression of a vineyard's character, Kelley Fox is a name for Oregon wine fans to add to their must try list, or as succinctly stated by Vinous critic Eric Guido, “Anyone looking for Oregon Pinot Noir purity and transparent communication of terroir from the soil to the vine to the bottle must explore Kelley Fox Wines.”

The 2023 Chardonnay Willamette Valley is more savory than sweet, with crushed almonds and yellow florals accentuating green apples. This is sweetly spiced with silken textures and ripe orchard fruits, all offset by a tinge of saline minerals and sour citrus. Depths of lemony concentration linger as this finishes with tremendous length. The 2023 is just a baby today and seems to evolve further with each tilt of the glass. This is fabulous.

93+ points, Eric Guido, Vinous (Aug 2024)

Pouring a medium yellow/golden hue, the 2023 Chardonnay Willamette Valley comes from younger vines within the Freedom Hill Vineyard and is floral and expressive with aromas of quince, grapefruit, a hint of sweet spice, and delicate toast. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate and has a mouthwatering feel, a silky, rounded midpalate, and outstanding energy propelling it through the lovely, savory, mineral-noted finish. It’s hard to resist now and offers tremendous value. Drink 2024-2032.

93 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Aug 2024)

The 2023 Chardonnay Willamette Valley comes from young vines at Freedom Hill Vineyard. Fermented and matured in stainless steel, it has exuberant aromas of guava and peach accented by wafts of jasmine, spice and honey. The medium-bodied palate is powerful yet weightless, its highly concentrated flavors foiled by vertical acidity, and it has a long, flavor-packed finish. 623 cases produced.

2021 Bodegas Muga Reserva (750ml)

The grapes for the 2021 Reserva (sold as Crianza in Spain), mostly Tempranillo with some Garnacha Tinta, Mazuelo and Graciano, were picked late in a cooler year when they finished the harvest the 20th of October, with plenty of times for the grapes to develop full aromas and flavors and complete ripeness. It fermented destemmed and lightly crushed in oak vats with indigenous yeasts, separating qualities, villages and soils, and matured in 80% French and 20% American oak barrels, 20% of them new, for 24 months, with racking every eight to nine months. It's a textbook example of their style in a very good year, with power, concentration and clout, elegance and freshness. It was a very harmonious year; the cycle was long and the tannins ripened to perfection. It's terrific and more so for the volume they produce (984,000 bottles of it). It was fined with egg whites and bottled in January 2024.

94 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Feb 2025)

A plush yet fresh Rioja showing blackberries, dark plums, fine spices, cocoa powder and a touch of roasted red chile peppers. 2020 Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion (750ml)
Cabernet Franc from Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation

Described over recent vintages as “one of Bordeaux’s stars” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous, these high scoring 98-100 pt. selections from Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion are among Pessac-Leognan’s most unique and age worthy blends from three top vintages, reflecting Les Carmes Haut-Brion’s “distinctive, Cabernet Franc-driven DNA” according to the Wine Advocate’s William Kelley and all incredibly priced well below its First Growth neighbors.

Situated just a few rows of houses away from Chateau Haut-Brion, Les Carmes Haut Brion was once part of the First Growth with roots dating back to the 16th century, enjoying a stratospheric rise in quality led by the former winemaker of iconic Rhone producer M. Chapoutier Guillaume Pouthier along with renowned consultant Stephane Derenoncourt under the ownership of Patrice Pichet since 2010. Described as “a magical terroir” by Jeb Dunnuck, the Grand Vin is sourced from the top 7.6 hectares of the estate’s sustainably farmed 30 hectares of vines planted mostly to Cabernet Franc and Merlot with about a fifth Cabernet Sauvignon, the best terroir near the Chateau boasting Cab Franc vines dating back to World War II. Declared “a dead ringer for Haut-Brion” by Jeb Dunnuck, the magnificent 100 pt. 2018 Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a blend of 37% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 29% Merlot matured in 75% new French oak barrels along with 16% foudres and 9% in terracotta amphoras for 24 months, revealing intensely aromatic, concentrated earthy black fruit with crushed stone and seamless, supple tannins, described as a “wine of dazzling intensity and stature” by Antonio Galloni of Vinous and summed up as “a total knockout” built to deliver the goods over the next 30 plus years. A blend of 48% Cabernet Franc, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon and 24% Merlot aged for 24 months in 84% new French oak barrels with 7% in foudres and 9% in terracotta amphoras, the elegant 98 pt. 2019 Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion is called “a gorgeous 2019” by Inside Bordeaux’s Jane Anson layering fresh, luscious aromatic fruit with refined, integrated tannins and boasting “a drinkability that makes you want a glass now, but could happily be enjoyed decades from now” according to Decanter’s Georgina Hindle, ranking #18 on Decanter’s Top Wines of 2023. Described as a “heavenly wine” that “you probably couldn't have too much of in the cellar” by Jeb Dunnuck, the full-bodied 2020 Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Merlot aged in 80% new French oak barrels along with 11% in foudres and 9% in terracotta amphoras for 24 months, yielding a thrilling and exquisitely balanced blend summed up by Vinous critic Neal Martin as “a serious Les Carmes Haut-Brion with a very long future ahead.”

Summing up the magical, riveting qualities of Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Jeb Dunnuck offers unequivocal advice: “Believe the hype,” these top vintages of Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion promising the epic ageability of its First Growth neighbor and value priced for Bordeaux collectors to stock the cellar at a fraction of the price.

100V 100D 98JD 98WI

The 2020 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a total stunner. For the first time I can remember, Les Carmes Haut-Brion marries all of its elements so well that nothing stands out. In the past, the high percentage of Franc and/or the whole clusters were evident. The 2020 is the first modern vintage in which all the elements are so well balanced. Dark red/purplish fruit, rose petal, mint, lavender, dried herbs and incense all build in a ravishing Pessac-Léognan that will take your breath away. The 2020 is 40% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 26% Merlot, picked between September 14 to 26, which is early here. Whole cluster was 55%. Vinification took place over five weeks, using very gentle extraction, with no pumpovers or punchdowns. Aging was 80% new oak, 11% 18hL foudres and 9% amphorae. In tasting, the 2020 is simply magnificent. There are no soloists, just the most exceptionally vivid, breathtaking orchestra imaginable. The 2020 is a masterpiece from Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier and his team. Don't miss it!

100 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Feb 2023)

The best 2020s seem to be confident without showing off or shouting too loudly and this Carmes does just that. Focused and precise, this is complex and characterful, rich yet vibrant with a texture and taste that makes an impact straight away. Fresh black fruits, floral notes and sensational minerality do the talking - it has weight, density and structure - broad and bold yet svelte, it has direction and persistence, building quickly then settling and elongating with such clarity and purity. This is a wine you want to drink. Cool, classic, sharp and decisive with a flawless texture. Whereas 2019 was more generous, this is more classic and easy to understand. An excellent job - seemingly effortless winemaking in 2020 - and a bottle that is sure to be emptied pretty quickly.

100 points, Georgina Hindle, Decanter (Jan 2023)

From a bottle purchased stateside, the 2020 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a riviting, utterly classic Pessac-Leognan that offers textbook darker currant fruits, scorched earth, tobacco, lead pencil, and smoky, truffly nuances, as well as a subtle floral hint with time in the glass. Based on 40% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the balance Merlot that saw a plenty of stems as well as 80% new oak, it's deep plum/ruby hued, has medium to full-bodied richness, a graceful, layered, elegant mouthfeel, polished, fine grained tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It's more approachable today than I would have imagined from barrel, and it actually reminds me of the 2019 with its understated elegance. It deserves a solid 7-8 years of bottle age and will be a 30, 40, 50+ year wine. It's another heavenly wine from Guillaume Pouthier that you probably couldn't have too much of in the cellar.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Oct 2023)

The 2020 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a blend of 40% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 26% Merlot with a pH of 3.62 and aged for 24 months in 80% new oak, 11% foudres, and 9% terracotta amphoras. A proportion of whole-bunch fermentation was used, depending on the suitability of the batch: 50-60% whole bunch was generally used on the Merlot and Cabernet Franc, less on the Cabernet Sauvignon. Deep garnet-purple in color, it slowly releases the most gorgeous perfume of violets, dark chocolate, black cherry preserves, and creme de cassis, followed by suggestions of crushed rocks, tar, wild sage, and anise. The medium-bodied palate delivers a solid foundation of firm, grainy tannins and seamless freshness to support the tight-knit black fruit and mineral layers, finishing long and perfumed.

"The team [at Lingua Franca] led by winemaker Thomas Savre is producing a portfolio of wines that show the power and complexity possible to obtain in Oregon." - Eric Guido, Vinous

Renowned for crafting top-scoring Burgundy for his family’s Côte-de-Beaune estate, master winemaker Dominique Lafon worked as a consultant to Oregon’s Evening Land Vineyards before collaborating with master sommelier and Evening Land general manager Larry Stone to co-found Lingua Franca in Willamette Valley’s Eola-Amity Hills in 2015. Lafon's expertise at crafting exceptional Burgundy was credited with driving Evening Land’s rising reputation early on. Purchasing the 140-acre Janzen Farm, a prime parcel situated next to Evening Land’s Seven Springs site and adjacent to Domaine Serene’s Jerusalem Hill Vineyard, Stone and Lafon then worked with renowned Willamette viticulturist Mimi Casteel to determine the precise mix of clones to plant based on the site’s varied soils, utilizing organic and biodynamic viticulture throughout the estate’s 66-acre vineyard and hiring Evening Land’s former assistant winemaker and Lafon protege Thomas Savre to craft its vineyard-driven wines. Boasting experience at legendary Burgundy estates including Domaine de la Romanee-Conti, Domaine Dujac, and Maison Nicolas Potel, Savre employs a transparent, minimal-intervention approach in the cellar, resulting in wines that now boast an impressive track record of world-class quality and glowing acclaim from the critical press. The 2022 vintage continues this upward trajectory in spades, showing why Lingua Franca remains one of Oregon's most exciting producers.

The Avni Chardonnay, which means stone is loaded with rip-roaring minerality and brilliant acidity to match. Aromatics of struck flint, sea breeze and green mangoes elicit a familiarity with the wine's core of minerality. Mouthfuls of sea salt, crushed granite and salted lemon leave a thirst-slaking impression and beg for someone to shuck some oysters.

93 points, Clive Pursehouse, Decanter (Aug 2024)

The 2022 Chardonnay Avni boasts a lovely, generous bouquet, with notes of white peach, pithy lemon, white flowers, and wet stone. Medium to full-bodied, it has a rounded feel, with a good deal of elegance and approachability, and a lovely, clean finish. A fantastic entry to the range, this highly consistent wine is outstanding for restaurant programs and offers a wide drinking window over the next 5-6 years.

Lithe and snappy, with appealing apple and lemon flavors highlighted by apricot blossom and orange peel elements. Drink now. 2,000 cases made.

Orange blossom, lemon zest and grapefruit on the nose. The palate is medium-bodied with bright acidity, giving notes of Fuji apple, grilled peach and honeysuckle. Mineral and precise. Drink or hold.

The 2022 Chardonnay Avni is sweetly floral with a delicate blend of ripe yellow apples, honeyed flowers and mint. A tactile tinge of salinity lingers along with hints of sour melon through the youthfully tense finale.

Described by Jeb Dunnuck as an estate “firing on all cylinders,” there's no doubt that Super Second Chateau Rauzan-Segla ranks at the top of the Margaux appellation, these high scoring Left Bank blends from outstanding recent vintages offering First Growth depth and cellar worthy complexity at a fraction of the price.

Located a short walk from the village of Margaux, Chateau Rauzan-Segla has been owned by the Wertheimer family of the fashion house Chanel since 1984, the estate undergoing a “no expense spared” restoration and revitalization that has fueled its steady rise in quality over the past two decades. Crafted by former Krug and Cheval des Andes winemaker Nicolas Audebert, the Grand Vin was sourced from the estate’s 70 hectares of organically farmed vineyards throughout the appellation with some parcels close to First Growth Chateau Margaux and aged in mostly new French oak for 18 months.

Living up to the Chateau’s rising star reputation as “an estate that can do no wrong” according to Jeb Dunnuck, these lush Chateau Rauzan-Segla blends boast refined, polished tannins that promise longevity, this offer a perfect opportunity for Bordeaux fans to stock the cellar with top scoring values rivalling its First Growth peers at a best on the market price.

Composed of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35.5% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, and 0.5% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Rauzan-Segla is deep garnet-purple colored. It is a little closed and broody to begin, soon fanning out to offer up notes of kirsch, black cherry preserves, and warm cassis, plus touches of smoked meats, wild blueberries, violets, and cedar chest, along with a hint of charcoal. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is very tightly wound with loads of earthy accents among the densely laden fruit and fine-grained tannins, finishing long and savory.

98 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Apr 2022)

The Grand Vin 2019 Château Rauzan-Ségla is beautiful, and it seems this estate can do no wrong since 2015. A more elegant, ethereal, complex Margaux, it has a perfumed and complex style in its red, blue, and black fruits as well as notes of white flowers, chalky minerality, and exotic spices. Haute couture at its finest and seamless, medium to full-bodied, perfectly balanced, and just stunning any way you look at it, it already offers pleasure today yet will easily have 30 years of prime drinking.

97 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Apr 2022)

The 2019 Rauzan-Ségla is a wine that I did not taste en primeur. Picked from September 12 to October 9 and matured in 60% new oak, it has a gorgeous, seductive bouquet of pure blackberry, bilberry, crushed iris petals and just a hint of licorice. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and good cohesion and depth. The oak is seamlessly integrated on the finish, which lingers like a temptress. Two samples tasted, the second demonstrating a little more salinity on the aftertaste. This will be irresistible.

97 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Feb 2022)

The 2019 Rauzan-Ségla has turned out brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with fragrant aromas of cassis, blackberries, violets, rose petals and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and concentrated, it's deep and layered, with beautifully refined tannins, lively acids and a long, perfumed finish. This is a sensual, elegant Rauzan-Ségla from Nicolas Audebert and his team.

Subtle and complex aromas of sweet berries, rose stems and lavender with some sandalwood. Medium-to full-bodied with beautiful depth of fruit, creamy tannins and lots of chocolate and berry character. Yet, it’s tight at the end, showing beautiful depth and length. So structured. Try after 2027.

Savvy bargain hunters are by now well aware of the stellar quality for price to be found in the relatively new Cairanne appellation. Since its promotion to full cru status, the region has captured the attention of Southern Rhône insiders, and it’s Domaine Alary leading the way.

Father and son Denis and Jean-Etienne Alary are renowned for their track record of consistent excellence, and the flagship Estevenas Rouge defines the domaine’s style and reputation in the market. The 94-96 point 2022 rendition “features stunning aromas ... Full-bodied, creamy and lush on the palate, it finishes long and silky” according to Wine Advocate’s Joe Czerwinski, the Syrah-dominant blend benefitting from some of the oldest Syrah vines in the Southern Rhône. The 2022 La Brunote is a prime example of the Alarys’ wide-ranging repertoire and skill set. The 92-94WA, Mourvèdre-based blend excels in the warm vintage, especially at our market-best price. “Full-bodied and richly concentrated, it's almost creamy in texture, with a lingering finish. Yum,” declares Czerwinski. Finally, the 2022 Jean de Verde continues this cuvée’s track record as a benchmark Cairanne collectible. Garnering a whopping 95-97 points as a potential best-ever effort from Denis and Jean-Etienne, it's "amazingly complex on the nose ... [with] wonderful harmony. It's full-bodied and rich, concentrated and velvety, with a long, zesty finish." In short, you'll be hard pressed to find a better bang for your buck in the southern Rhone. Alary is back at B-21 in a big way, with 2022s that set the pace for the appellation and offer world-class value.

Potentially the best wine I can remember tasting at this estate—it looks to rival the remarkable 2016—the 2022 Cairanne la Jean de Verde is amazingly complex on the nose, with notes of red raspberries, cocoa, roses, orange zest and blueberries all swirling around each other in wonderful harmony. It's full-bodied and rich, concentrated and velvety, with a long, zesty finish.

"Marc Plouzeau is at the top of his game today and making some of the most stunning wines to be found anywhere in the vast universe that is the world of wine." - John Gilman,View From the Cellar

The Loire Valley is so much more than Sancerre, and we're on a mission to bring you new discoveries that showcase just how much world-class wine there is to be found along this lengthy stretch of river. Apart from Sancerre, Chinon is probably the best-known Loire appellation, and certainly the best-known for red wines. After all, it's an ancestral home of the ancient Cabernet Franc varietal, which performs on its own here better than anywhere else in the world.

Long-time Loire fans probably know names like Joguet and Raffault, but Marc Plouzeau is one you need to add to your list post haste. His vineyard holdings are easily among the finest in the appellation, and his meticulous craftsmanship in the cellar fully expresses their inimitable potential. A master of single-vineyard expressions, Plouzeau offers a thrilling range of styles from his varied terroirs, but the 1929 Lieu-Dit Vindoux (also known as the Vindoux L'Integrale) is his undisputed crown jewel. These near-centenarian vines on deep argilo-calcaire soils produce a famously age-worthy wine, which has reached new levels in the excellent 2020 vintage. With 95+ points from Gilman, "it will stand as one of the great wines made in Chinon in the last couple of decades."

While the domaine is built on Cabernet Franc, Plouzeau also makes a pair of truly singular Chinon Blancs, the highlight being the Vive le Chenin. Made from a one-hectare parcel of Chenin Blanc, the 93-point 2022 "is going to be an outstanding wine." Fermented and aged all in tank with no malolactic, it's loaded with true varietal character yet remains approachable young, with "a superb core of fruit, lovely soil signature, zesty acids and excellent precision on the long and perfectly balanced finish."

The best feature of Plouzeau's wines, however, is the pricing – simply jaw-dropping given the benchmark quality in the bottle, perhaps due to his still under-the-radar status compared to his contemporaries. Savvy Loire collectors will want to take full advantage while they can, especially if Plouzeau keeps turning out results like these.

95JG

To my palate, the “Vindoux l’Intégrale”, with its old vines having been planted all the way back in 1929, is Marc Plouzeau’s finest Chinon bottling. I last tasted this brilliant bottling of Chinon in the 2018 vintage and I was happy to see that the 2020 version was a touch less ripe than the ’18, coming in this year at 13.5 percent octane. The wine delivers a superb aromatic constellation of dark berries, cassis, cigar smoke, a touch of tree bark, dark soil tones, espresso, just a touch of menthol and a very discreet framing of oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and impeccably balanced, with a fine core of black fruit, superb soil inflection and grip, fine-grained, buried tannins and a very long, complex and supremely elegant, old vine finish. The 2020 vintage of Vindoux l’Intégrale is nicely structured out of the blocks and will need plenty of time in the cellar to blossom properly, but, once it is ready, it will stand as one of the great wines made in Chinon in the last couple of decades! Chapeau!

"The [Aperture] wines offer hedonistic pleasure across the range, offering high-octane power balanced with superb elegance ...They are continuing to offer blockbuster wines, especially their 2021 releases."

- Audrey Frick, JebDunnuck.com

One of the more impressive boutique operations in Sonoma County today has nothing at all to do with Pinot Noir. Winemaker Jesse Katz of Aperture Cellars is emerging as a bona fide master of Bordeaux varietals in the appellation, and his track record is one of unbroken success, garnering acclaim from across the critical spectrum on an annual basis. The 2021s are arguably Katz's finest efforts yet, clearly evident in the double 96-point 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon. Blended from almost all of the estate's prized parcels in Alexander Valley and Healdsburg, it's a profoundly luxurious expression that manages to maintain superb balance and weightless precision thanks to the expert touch of the winemaking team. If you're looking for a California Cabernet with impeccable, cellar-worthy pedigree and a drinking window that will span the better part of two decades, look no further.

96WA 96D 95JD 95WE

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon comes from Aperture's estate vineyard in Healdsburg and their newest vineyard acquisition, Farrow Ranch in Alexander Valley, plus some of the original single vineyards in the Aperture program like Oliver Ranch. It is blended with 6% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot, 3% Malbec and 1% Cabernet Franc and was matured for 16 months in 55% new French oak. It has vibrant, layered aromas of blueberry compote, lavender, aniseed, milk chocolate and nutmeg with undertones of cast iron and tobacco leaves. The medium-bodied palate is elegantly styled, pairing deep flavors with a weightless feel due to its bright acidity and velvety tannins. It has a long, latent finish and deserves 3-5 years in bottle. 4,480 cases produced.

96 points, Erin Brooks, Wine Advocate (Dec 2023)

The 2021 Aperture Cabernet Sauvignon layers in 3% Malbec and 1% Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and Merlot fruit. It is the first wine that Jesse Katz made when he started the Aperture brand, and for the 2021 vintage, he leveraged an excellent amount of Farrow Ranch fruit, a vineyard he bought the year of this harvest. It also includes fruit from single blocks in other vineyards, such as Del Rio and Oliver Ranch. Katz crafted such a supple, easy-drinking Cabernet in 2021, with layers of deliciousness matched only by the structure that holds it all together. Waves of blue and black fruits mingle with heady cigar box and red rock volcanics, all dusted with notes of white pepper. The polished, supple tannins have a wonderful buoyancy to them and provide a wonderful foundation for the wealth of super velvety dark fruits on the palate. Flavours of Bing cherry, plum, and blueberry, wrapped in tobacco leaves and dusted again with more white pepper notes, provide a foundation for nuances of crushed cocoa nibs on the finish. Long, layered, and mineral-rich, with a host of baking spices and lively floral qualities, this red is immensely drinkable out of the gate.

96 points, Jonathan Cristaldi, Decanter (May 2024)

Pouring a deep red/purple color, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon has the addition of 6% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot, 3% Malbec and a splash of Cabernet Franc, all raised in 55% new French oak for 18 months. It’s aromatic of brambly crunchy fruits, with notes of blackberries, resinous herbs, mossy forest earth, and mocha. Full-bodied and light on its feel, with lovely freshness, it offers refined tannins and a good deal of length, with an even spine of acidity to hold up its decadent nature. It is going to be an age-worthy wine to enjoy over the next 15 or so years.

95 points, Audrey Frick, Jeb Dunnuck (Jun 2024)

Deeply ruby-black colored and powerfully structured, this Cabernet gives aromas of spiced cherry compote, black currant and cassis on the nose. The palate is decadent and complex, with layers of rich, ripe berry fruit mingling with hints of violet, cocoa powder, cinnamon and black pepper in a balanced but ageworthy framework.

2018 Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion (750ml)
Cabernet Franc from Pessac-Leognan, Bordeaux, France
B-21 Top Recommendation
Read More

100JD 98JA

The 2018 Château Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a rock star of a wine and is based on a unique blend of 37% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 29% Merlot that was brought up in 80% new French oak. Offering a deep ruby/purple color as well as a thrilling bouquet of blackcurrants, smoked tobacco, chocolate, violets, damp earth, and truffle, it hits the palate with a full-bodied yet almost understated, building style that carries ripe, supple tannins, gorgeous amounts of smoky black fruits, and an endearing, layered, multi-dimensional texture that keeps you coming back to the glass. A dead ringer for a great vintage of Haut-Brion, it is far from unapproachable today yet needs 7-8 years of bottle age for the fireworks to develop and will have 50-years or more of longevity! Hats off to Guillaume Pouthier for a magical, seamless, singular beauty!

100 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Mar 2021)

This powerful, full of complex layers of raspberry, blackberry, smoked earth, rosemary and turmeric spice, but running underneath it all is clear salinity and grip. The personality and poise of this wine overtakes the vintage, not an easy thing to do in a year that is as powerful as 2018 and on a warm site such as Carmes Haut-Brion. Touches of saffron and salt-licked as it opens, sage, freshly grilled dried herbs and gourmet espresso and brioche. Enjoyable. 3.62pH, and harvest at almost 1% ABV higher than you find in the final bottle. Ageing takes place in a mix of 25% new oak, 5% oak casks, and 10% amphoras, with 55% stems during fermentation, and natural yeasts.

2022 Domaine Alary Cairanne L'Estevenas (750ml)

B-21 Top Recommendation

Full-bodied, creamy and lush on the palate, it finishes long and silky, with hints of black olive lending a welcome savory edge.

"The fruit-forward and charming 2022 Shiraz Mother's Milk offers up a wild ride..."-Vinous

One of the pillars of the Australian wine scene are the remarkably well-made value stunners that can be found all over the country's myriad diverse wine regions. First Drop is one of those rare producers that hits homeruns at every point on the spectrum, from collectible caliber cult bottlings to overperforming gems that deliver big character for a small price, and the 2022 Mother's Milk Shiraz is exhibit A of the latter.

Entirely sourced from choice vineyards in Barossa, namely high-elevation plots in Seppeltsfield, Kalmina, and Eden Valley, the 2022 Mother's Milk boasts excellent pedigree, which goes a long way to explaining how such a sharply priced wine can offer so much top-flight polish and character. It's classic Barossa with its core of dark, luxurious fruits and savory/spicy undertones, all built on a "seamless" foundation of plush Shiraz tannins characteristic of the best Barossa expressions.

Considering all that, it's no wonder that the 2022 Mother's Milk collected a pair of 92-point scores from James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion and Wine Spectator, which also listed it among their Smart Buys/Best Values of the year. Priced for stacking by the case, it's an easy go-to for nearly any occasion.

2015 Chateau Suduiraut (375ml)
Semillon from Sauternes, Bordeaux, France

99JD 98WA 98WI 97V

A huge success in the vintage is the 2015 Château Suduiraut and this gem goes a long way towards showing how successful the sweet wines were in 2015. Offering a massive array of orange peel, honey, marmalade, flowers, and toasted nuts, this incredible wine hits the palate with a thunderous display of opulence, richness, and length, all while staying fresh, elegant, and seamless. It has a huge mid-palate and is reminiscent of the 2003, only with more freshness and delineation.

99 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Nov 2017)

One of the most singular wines in this vertical tasting, the 2015 Suduiraut possesses a deep, complex bouquet of exotic fruits, pineapple, white flowers and ripe orchard fruits mingled with vanilla pod and menthol hints. Medium to full-bodied, rich and concentrated with an enveloping palate, it has a fleshy core of fruit, controlled power and a delicate, gourmand and penetrating finish. It elegantly combines finesse and power. One of my favorites, this blend of 94% Sémillon and 6% Sauvignon Blanc is a splendid bottle in the making after a minimum of 15-25 years in the cellar, even if it is approachable right now. Matured for 18 months in oak barrels (50% new and 50% one-year-old), it contains 138 grams per liter of residual sugar and was produced at a yield of 16 hectoliters per hectare.

98+ points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate (Jun 2024)

The 2015 Suduiraut has 150 g/l residual sugar. Pale to medium gold in color, it strolls out of the glass with forward, up-front scents of dried apricots, mango pudding, and pineapple upside-down cake, followed by hints of acacia honey, candied ginger, and wild fungi, plus a touch of allspice. The palate is fantastically fresh, with satisfying flamboyance, delivering loads of tropical fruit and baking spice layers, finishing long with a gingery lift.

98 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Nov 2022)

The 2015 Suduiraut has a backward bouquet that needs more encouragement from the glass than any other Sauternes. But it is worth persevering as it offers lovely waxy, dried honey and quince aromas with time. The palate is rich on the entry with spice and ginger, thickly textured but never cloying, a fair amount of oak used here but it is perfectly assimilated. Stunning. Arguably the most dynamic producer in southwest France, Gerard Bertrand's stable of estates form the backbone of the winegrowing traditions in the regions around the foothills of the Pyrenees. As dramatic a winegrowing landscape as you'll find, this region has been home to the vine since the ancient Romans and Phoenicians fought over it. Chateau l'Hospitalet in the coastal La Clape AOC is a marvelous property, part resort, part vineyard, and part nature preserve, where you'll find some of the most definitive wines of the appellation.

The 2021 l'Hospitaliet Rouge, a blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Mourvedre, is "a gorgeous wine that is dripping with finesse" per Wine Enthusiast and "a classic at this address" according to Wine Advocate. Likewise, the 2021 Blanc, made from Bourboulenc, Grenache Blanc, Vermentino, and Viognier, is "plush and inviting, with warm spice details and a honeyed note on the mineral-rich, racy finish" as described in Wine Spectator's 92-point review. If you're a fan of eminently classic Rhone-style wines with their own signature character, look no further.

A blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2016 Rauzan-Segla is deep garnet in color, with a touch of purple. It needs a lot of swirling to wake up profound scents of crème de cassis, black cherry compote, and plum pudding, followed by nuances of cumin, unsmoked cigars, star anise, and black truffles. The medium-bodied palate delivers a firm backbone of super-ripe, grainy tannins and a refreshing line to cut through the dense, muscular black fruits, finishing long and opulent. It still needs some time, but WOW!

98+ points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Mar 2024)

I continue to love the 2016 Rauzan-Ségla, a thrillingly complete, flawlessly balanced, and borderline perfect Margaux that should be snatched up by readers. Notes of cassis, graphite, tobacco leaf, and earth all give way to a full-bodied effort that has building tannins, no hard edges, and a level of purity and elegance that’s just about off the charts. Given its purity and balance, it’s accessible today, but it will be best with 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 3-4 decades.

98 points, Jeb Dunnuck (May 2019)

The aromas of blackcurrants, sweet tobacco and sandalwood are tantalizing. Then it turns to subtle, dried fruit. Full-bodied with dense and powerful tannins, yet ending with finesse and vertical nature. Very deep. Power with finesse. Try after 2025.

98 points, James Suckling (Jan 2019)

Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Rauzan-Ségla drifts effortlessly from the glass with fragrant rose hip tea, candied violets and chocolate box scents over a core of fresh blackcurrants and black cherry compote plus wafts of tobacco and dusty soil. Medium to full-bodied, it delivers a great mid-palate of softly textured black and blue fruits with loads of floral nuances and a refreshing lift on the finish.

97 points, Wine Advocate (Apr 2020)

Dark tannins work with the sophisticated structure of this wine. The very fine tannins are an important element of the wine, giving shape to the ripe black fruits and acidity. This wine, rich and structured, is set for a long development. Drink from 2026.

97 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (May 2019)

Structured and elegant, this starts slowly, and is clearly still young at this point, with firm tannins giving a slow-release to the blackberry and cassis fruits, laced with mint, black tea, cumin and liqourice. Getting even better as it ages, this has decades ahead of it. This first wine comes almost entirely from plots on Terrace 4, a wide, clay-rich strip of gravel. 3/6ph, 45hl/h yield, 60% new oak, harvest September 20 to October 15. Nicolas Audbert director.

97 points, Jane Anson (Nov 2023)

The 2016 Rauzan-Ségla has an elegant bouquet that needs some coaxing from the glass, eventually revealing red berry fruit, rose petal, chai tea and light bergamot aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with very supple tannins that lend a silky-smooth texture. This has a fine line of acidity and impressive harmony on the finish. Wonderful. Tasted blind at the Southwold tasting.

96 points, Neal Martin, Vinous (Aug 2020)

The reputation of Rauzan-Ségla is well earned here in a wine of supreme elegance, with pristine and vivid red and black fruit and cigar box aromatics. A bastion of the old-school Rioja style, Sierra Cantabria boasts a track record of consistency that puts them firmly in the company of the region's other benchmark names. Known for turning out superb values, the estate also excels with some truly outstanding single-vineyard wines that Rioja collectors seek out on a regular basis. The bridge between the two categories is the Unica Reserva, sourced from a handful of these same prized vineyard sites that make up the top tier of the Sierra Cantabria range. The impeccable fruit pedigree, expert winemaking, and outstanding price all combine for a surefire winner of outstanding value that Rioja lovers can stock up on and enjoy time and time again over the next 15 years or more.

The 2019 Reserva Única was produced with Tempranillo and 3% Graciano from one single vineyard, fermented, destemmed and with indigenous yeasts selected from their vineyards. It matured in oak barrels, 60% French and 40% American, for 24 months, including malolactic, and it was racked every four months. This is somewhere between the more classical range (Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva) and the more modern one. It's quite complete and balanced in a classical year, with ripeness, 14.1% alcohol, a pH of 3.66 and 5.6 grams of acidity, keeping the balance. The Eguren family considers 2019 one of their best recent harvests. 20,256 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2022.

93 points, Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate (Feb 2024)

Inky garnet in the glass, this wine offers a bouquet of cassis, butterscotch and crumbled sage leaf. Dark and red-berry flavors and notes of cocoa bean, eucalyptus, licorice and violet are set into a wall of compact tannins that slowly crumbles to expose a spicy, long-lasting finish.

93 points, Mike DeSimone, Wine Enthusiast (Dec 2023)

The 2019 Reserva Única is primarily Tempranillo with a 3% addition of Graciano, sourced from San Vicente de la Sonsierra and Laguardia. Aged for 24 months in a combination of French (60%) and American (40%) oak barrels, 15% new, this purple wine reveals notes of sour cherry and pomegranate, intertwined with wild herbs and a cedar-vanilla layer. Dry and juicy on the palate, the fruit flavors linger long with a loose expression.

92 points, Joaquín Hidalgo, Vinous (Apr 2024)

Sleek and well-knit, this medium- to full-bodied red showcases a ripe core of black plum and mulberry fruit accented by fragrant flavors of Earl Grey tea leaves, anise, dried flowers and minerally smoke and spices. Silky and graceful on the palate, with supple tannins trimming the finish. Tempranillo and Graciano. Drink now through 2034. 1,714 cases made, 1,000 cases imported.

92 points, Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator (Mar 2024)

The largest production single vineyard (think of this as the entry level to the single vineyard releases), the 2019 Sierra Cantabria Reserva Única is deep ruby/plum-hued and offers a clean, classy, medium-bodied style as well as notes of cassis and darker fruits, some classic background oak, some spice, graphite, and violet notes, ripe tannins, and beautiful overall balance.

Suduiraut has a rather delicate floral aroma for a wine that's luminous gold. Botrytis flavors kick in on the palate and the wine explodes. What's left is ethereal: scents of the forest, of beeswax, ginger and Mandarin orange marmalade, a range of honeyed flavors that never seems to stop. A reset for your taste receptors, this is mood-altering wine. Absolutely lovely.

95 points, Wine & Spirits (Oct 2007)

Like so many vintages of Suduiraut, this wine shows richness, even in the relatively delicate 2004. Ripe, sweet fruit flavors —dates, figs, pineapples and tangerines—dominate. This richness goes deep down, leaving a texture that is intense and concentrated.

94 points, Roger Voss, Wine Enthusiast (Feb 2009)

The 2004 Suduiraut has a composed bouquet that is one of the most complex Sauternes in this vintage: dried honey, pralines, dried quince and beeswax all with fine delineation and focus. The palate is rich and decadent on the entry, counterbalanced by a caressing mellifluous texture and a delicate touch of spice. There is a hint of citrus peel on the aftertaste that is commendably long and satisfying. Excellent. Drink now-2030.

The 2016 Suduiraut is fabulous. Crème brûlée, passion fruit, tangerine peel and exotic floral notes all race out of the glass. I marvel at how Suduiraut can deliver so much flavor intensity and yet remain so gracious and classy. The 140 grams of residual sugar are very well integrated. This is such a gorgeous wine.

97 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Jan 2019)

The 2016 Suduiraut has 145 g/l of residual sugar. Pale lemon-gold in color, it flies out of the glass with vivacious, youthful scents of lemon tart, lime cordial, and orange blossom, plus suggestions of nutmeg, marzipan, and creme brulee. The rich, seductive, full-bodied palate really packs a powerful wallop of fruit, supported by a seamless line of freshness and a decadently oily texture, finishing long and perfumed.

97 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Independent (Dec 2022)

The pale lemon-gold colored 2016 Suduiraut features vibrant lime blossom, candied peel, white peaches, guava and exotic spice notes on the nose with nuances of marzipan and crème brûlée. Rich, layered and powerful in the mouth, it has a gorgeous creamy texture, lovely vibrancy and a long, spicy finish.

95+ points, Wine Advocate (Mar 2019)

As to the Sauternes, the 2016 Château Suduiraut boasts a medium gold color and a fresh, clean, beautifully perfumed bouquet of orange blossom, honeyed pineapple, and flowers, with notable botrytis, which can be lacking in a number of Sauternes in 2016. With moderate acidity, a fleshy, full-bodied texture, and loads of fruits, it’s geared more toward drinking over the coming 10-15 years than any over-the-top cellaring.

95 points, Jeb Dunnuck (Feb 2019)

A very concentrated Sauternes with a cornucopia of dried papaya, pineapple and mango, plus candied orange and tropical flowers that bowl you over. Although it stays in the background, there’s great acidity in this wine that keeps it very straight and clean, in spite of the luscious extravagance. Bright, citrusy finish. Drink or hold.
