The 2019 Barolo Bussia is a wine of precision, energy and understated structure. A whole range of balsamic notes open first. Layered and dynamic on the palate, with terrific depth, the 2019 sizzles with energy that carries through to the mid-palate and finish. In this tasting, the Bussia is wonderfully vivid right out of the gate.

This shows a light touch for a Monforte d’Alba Barolo, its translucent color matching with delicate rose petal scents and flavors of red berries woven with fresh tarragon. Its silky tannins allow all of the nuanced flavors to emerge.

Flowers and dried strawberries with hints of sandalwood and rosewood. Plenty of flowers. Medium body. Very fine and firm tannins. Crunchy and bright. Drinkable but better in three or four years.

This Bussia, with its southeast exposure shines for the freshness of its fruit. Compared to Cerretta, here the more elegant and less extractive Antinori style for Prunotto becomes even clearer. Considered one of the sternest MGAs of the appellation in terms of style, this 2019 is perfumed with blood orange, dill and liquorice. An assertive citrus character soaks the juicy, velvety tannins, becoming more austere and rustic on the finish without losing freshness.

Here is another historic wine from Prunotto, only this time it comes from one of the most recognized crus in Barolo. It represents an ample production of 25,000 bottles per year. The 2019 Barolo Bussia has an interesting bouquet with clear tones of blue flower, fruit and rusty mineral. These are the basic building blocks of Nebbiolo, and this wine presents them as distinct elements. A few more years of bottle age will help this wine reach better integration. Like most of these wines from Prunotto, the Bussia shows an easygoing personality for near and medium-term drinking.

Aromas of raspberry liquor, strawberry and rhubarb, cinnamon sticks and dried rose waft from the glass. The broad palate is lush with ripe red fruits supported by savory spice, minerality and superfine tannins. Drink now–2040.
