Since taking over her family's business in the early 2000s and settling in with her family in St Emilion, Hélène Garcin-Lévêque has greatly increased the level of quality at her estates while bringing a breath of fresh air to the business of sales and promotions. A savvy lady of the vine first and foremost, her first order of business was to initiate a program of organic and sustainable vineyard management across each of her estates. This commitment to soil and vine began to take root almost immediately, and can easily be discerned across even the earliest vintages where she was in control. In particular, at Haut Bergey in Pessac Leognan, these sloped, south by southwest exposed vineyards, with their gravely terroir greatly benefited from Hélène's intensive vineyard work. Her strict hands-on approach at harvest time, where she methodically controlled the selection process, resulted in one of the most amazing 2004s I've tasted from this region. Under Hélène's guidance, and with a decade plus in their deep cold cellars, this unbelievable wine goes toe-to-toe with the very best of the appellation. With its classic Pessac terroir notes, beautiful maturity and striking balance, you don't want to miss it.

A top-notch effort from proprietress Helene Garcin, Haut-Bergey’s 2004 exhibits an evolved, cedary, smoky, tobacco, and sweet cherry-scented bouquet offered in a medium-bodied, supple-textured style. It is not as big or forceful as the 2005 nor as structured as the 2006, but rather it is evolved, seductive, and ideal for drinking over the next 7-8 years.
