I love the way this smells of black licorice, crushed cherries, and blackberries. Concentration is the theme here. It’s full bodied and layered with masses of dark fruit and powerful tannins. This is very impressive. Much better than I remember from past tastings.

The 2007 Barbera d’Alba Scarrone is an insanely beautiful, layered Barbera. Silky tannins frame a core of perfumed dark fruit, spices, licorice and minerals. This opulent yet impeccably balanced Scarrone possesses awesome richness and tons of style. Sweet floral notes ring out on the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.

Deep ruby-red. Deep aromas of black cherry, blackberry, dark chocolate, minerals and flowers. Wonderfully lush, sweet and velvety, conveying an impression of liqueur-like ripeness and an almost roasted suggestion of mocha but with the acidity to give it verve and shape. Huge and full barbera that saturates the mouth with layers of flavor. The most impressive vintage yet for this wine, which is from vines replanted in 1988 and surrounded by Barolo vineyards.

Here’s a plush, modern Barbera d’Alba with bright fruit and berry tones followed by softer notes of cinnamon and chocolate. On the whole it is a well-integrated wine, although there is power and density here that suggests a pairing with lasagna or thickly cheesy pasta.
