13% of this wine is from a list of grapes too lengthy and obscure to name) Good deep red-ruby. Very ripe aromas of crushed berries and violet lifted by pepper. Suave on entry, then sweet and thick in the middle but energetic, with reticent flavors of crushed berries and wild herbs. This broad, deep but youthfully backward zinfandel finishes with a fine dusting of sweet tannins. Very different from the Howell Mountain bottling but equally interesting. 91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, May/Jun 10
Never nearly as specific in terms of Zinfandel fruit as is its partner from Howell Mountain, the Morisoli bottling is a solid, slightly compact working that edges to toughness with acid-pushed tannins taking their toll just now. It has the briar and spice that we look for in Zin, but it could do with a boost in basic juice, and, though its mate is sure to get better, this one is just dry enough at its heart to temper our enthusiasm. 87 points, Connoisseurs' Guide 1-2011 |
