The 2007 Dolcetto d’Alba from proprietor Chiara Boschis is dark, earthy and powerful. This is an especially rich, textured Dolcetto that should continue to drink nicely for at least another few years. Minerals, dark raspberries and spices linger on the intense, pure finish. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2011.

Many Dolcettos are either tanky or relying on new oak to divert attention from their innocuousness. This wine is neither. The second problem with most Dolcetto is ripeness or lack thereof typical of Pinot and other cooler climate grapes; This wine has excellent balance of ripeness and if representative of the vintage bodes well for the region. Thirdly, many of the wines are thin and acidic on nose and palate relating primarily to ripening/picking issues which too is a function of the wine being more of a cash crop and not a priority of many producers. The nose is full, rich and varietal; pure. The palate is too rich, full and long with excellent balance. It is one of the better dolcettos I have tasted in some time and the best in a couple of years and reasonably priced. Additionally Chiara Boschis makes excellent Barolos and her family has owned Borgogno for many generations. Clearly this wine comes from well situated vines of age. Does it have pedigree? It is Dolcetto. Excellent Dolcetto.
