Very ripe, with velvety layers of crushed plum and mulled blackberry fruit interwoven with bittersweet ganache, fruitcake and melted licorice. The long, dense, fleshy finish sails on nicely. A sleeper selection is the sexy 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape. It offers plenty of spice box, fruitcake, and black cherry jam notes along with a creamy texture, and opulent, lush, silky tannins. The vintage’s lack of excessive heat spikes has provided freshness as well as terrific aromatics. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.
