Still in barrel, the 2005 Hermitage is superb. It will be interesting to see in a decade or so which wine turns out better, 2005 or 2006. The 2005 has less charm, complexity, and nuance than 2006, but more tannin, body, and pure power. Still somewhat monolithic, it does not exhibit the finesse of the 2006, but it is a big, blockbuster, backstrapping wine that will require a lot of time in the bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2035. 91-93 points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate (Apr 2009)

Deep ruby. Deeply pitched aromas of cherry compote, potpourri and Asian spices, with an exotic note of singed orange. Concentrated but surprisingly lively, with densely packed dark berry flavors and a hint of bitter chocolate. The floral note comes back strongly on the impressively long, smoky finish. Guigal says that this will age slowly. 92 Points, Stephen Tanzer's Int'l Cellar

Not as grippy as most 2005s, but wonderfully ripe and balanced, with dark plum, fig and blackberry fruit laid over suave black tea and melted licorice hints. The lingering, toasty finish is well-integrated. Drink now through 2016. 91 Points, The Wine Spectator (2010)
