"The old vine cuvee, the 2001 Chateauneuf du Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes, exhibits great purity, but it is far more backward than its two siblings. This deep plum/purple-colored effort offers a smorgasbord of aromas, including lavender, ground pepper, currants, cherries, and spice box. The firmness, tannic clout, dense, expansive flavors, and rich, powerful finish are impressive, but patience is warranted. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2015. 92 points - Robert M.
